Transcript
- 0:13If you are still charging a client one hundred and fifty dollars a month to log into
- 0:17wp admin, click update on five plugins, and run a manual database backup,
- 0:22I, I, I think you are basically selling ghost work at this point.
- 0:26Selling ghost work.
- 0:27That is a bit harsh, Ben.
- 0:28People pay for peace of mind.
- 0:30No, seriously!
- 0:31Look at what just dropped.
- 0:33Novamira CLI lets a terminal agent like Claude Code or Codex CLI connect directly to
- 0:39your WordPress site.
- 0:40It handles PHP execution, database queries, file operations,
- 0:44full plugin updates in literally three seconds.
- 0:47Why pay a human for five minutes of clicking?
- 0:50Well, because when a plugin update breaks a checkout flow at two in the morning on a
- 0:54Friday, Claude Code is not the one getting woken up by a frantic client.
- 0:58The agency is.
- 1:00Sure, but the value proposition completely inverted.
- 1:03Look at the three year telemetry data published by Katie Keith over at Barn2.
- 1:07Organic search traffic dropped from thirty nine percent to thirty percent.
- 1:12It is still their biggest trackable source by far, but that nine point slide in
- 1:16organic search means routine SEO tweaks and basic maintenance are not delivering the
- 1:21clear win they used to.
- 1:22Wait, say those numbers again?
- 1:23Thirty nine to thirty?
- 1:25Thirty nine percent down to thirty percent over three years.
- 1:28And direct traffic jumped to forty one percent.
- 1:31A huge chunk of that is actually dark AI traffic, people coming from ChatGPT or
- 1:36Perplexity without proper referral tags.
- 1:39Right, right, okay, but, er, as someone who spent years dealing with plugin sprawl
- 1:44when I built WPfavs, I can tell you that site owners never actually cared about the
- 1:49manual clicks anyway.
- 1:51What they wanted was to not feel overwhelmed by clutter and risk.
- 1:55Exactly!
- 1:55So when we saw people shifting toward automated stack management in WPfavs,
- 2:00it was not because they wanted to fire their agency.
- 2:03It was because they realized manual setup is tedious friction.
- 2:07But risk management?
- 2:09That is accountability.
- 2:10You do not fire your fire department just because smoke detectors got cheaper.
- 2:15I am not saying fire the agency!
- 2:16I am saying the agency has to stop billing for labor and start billing for
- 2:20stewardship.
- 2:21If an AI terminal agent can run full site health checks, execute WP CLI commands,
- 2:26and troubleshoot errors using new local APIs like Benjamin Intal showed with his
- 2:31Ahentic AI workspace experiment, then your manual maintenance checklist is worth
- 2:35zero dollars.
- 2:36Hmm.
- 2:37So what replaces the retainer then?
- 2:38AI visibility and governance.
- 2:40That is the entire game now.
- 2:42Remember that Barn2 statistic where direct visits climbed to forty one percent of
- 2:46total traffic?
- 2:47Yeah, forty one percent.
- 2:48A massive portion of that is dark AI referrals.
- 2:51Tools like AttribuLead are starting to track recommendations coming out of ChatGPT,
- 2:56Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity as a distinct channel.
- 2:59If an AI assistant recommends your WooCommerce product, it shows up as a direct
- 3:03visit in standard analytics unless you specifically structure your site to be read
- 3:07and cited by LLMs.
- 3:09So instead of tweaking page titles for traditional Google bots,
- 3:13agencies should be building structured data pipelines for AI engines.
- 3:17Yes!
- 3:18And doing it natively!
- 3:19You do not need expensive external SaaS middleware or third party servers.
- 3:23We are seeing tools leverage WordPress core APIs, exposing clean JSON LD,
- 3:28dynamic llms dot txt files, and structured endpoints directly from the server.
- 3:32That is actually a huge shift for web developers.
- 3:35For years, the agency skill set was learning how to drag and drop elements inside
- 3:40page builders like Elementor or Divi.
- 3:43Now you are telling them developers need terminal skills, CLI workflows,
- 3:47and prompt guardrails?
- 3:49100%.
- 3:50If your developers only know how to adjust margin padding in a visual builder,
- 3:54they are going to struggle.
- 3:56They need to know how to set up local agent infrastructure,
- 3:59test site endpoints with browser automation, and manage how AI agents parse content
- 4:04without breaking block structures.
- 4:06I, I, I actually agree with that part.
- 4:08When you look at tools like Open Source Block MCP or Novamira,
- 4:12the goal is letting AI agents edit pages and run database operations safely without
- 4:18leaving broken recovery prompts in Gutenberg.
- 4:21That takes real backend governance.
- 4:23Right!
- 4:24So the modern agency retainer in 2026 is not site maintenance.
- 4:28It is acting as an internal data pipeline manager and an AI discovery steward for
- 4:33the brand.
- 4:33Data pipeline manager sounds way more expensive than plugin updater anyway.
- 4:38Good transition for agency margins.
- 4:40And it delivers actual value.
- 4:42You keep the site discoverable where people are actually searching.
- 4:45Alright, well, I guess I need to go update my terminal commands.
- 4:48Good chat, Ben.
- 4:49Talk soon, Nick.
