Latest / 3 Yards Per Carry - Miami Dolphins / 3YPC-The Low Redzone Episode 1.4
Transcript
- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the low red zone draw show with me Simon Chansey and as always my special guest car crab from A to Z sports, see what I did there, how are you my friend, you're great how are you doing yeah I'm good things I'm good let's get straight into it because today show we'll kick around a few subjects we'll get into the combine list that's just been released we'll talk Caleb down and the Tennessee Titans at peak for which to me is
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: One of the most interesting tricks in the first round, but I don't think it would be the low red zone draw show.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: If we didn't kick off by talking about our old friend Ole Miss Court of Act, Trinidad, Chambley's late last night, a state court judge in Mississippi ruled he would be granted a sixth season of eligibility after receiving an injunction.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: earlier in the day the NCAA had ruled he was ineligible.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: This obviously ends car the long running saga kind of really won't be in the draft and I think whilst there's kind of plenty of issues that kind of this case not at least local judges kind of acting as the fact of appeals committees for pretty much every eligibility decision is not exactly an ideal process.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of feels like common sense has prevailed here, doesn't it?
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I think so and I would agree with you then.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder how many court hearings we get this time next year for the players that were lower levels that have come up through and and maybe had a year where they didn't play and it certainly is slippery slow but I think you could tell throughout this whole build up this was what.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_02]: checklist wanted and the fact that he gets it good for you now go play well next year at Ole Miss and make the most of that opportunity and I think he'll be better for it from a draft prospect perspective if he does show a lot of refinement and growth after obviously the one year Ole Miss and I think he's still pretty rough around the edges and would benefit from more time on task playing at Ole Miss.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: it's a little bit like the discussion we had around daunting more about whether or not he'll come out or or not and people saying well he needs to maximise his draft position this year but I suppose if you're a canvas and previously more you're thinking about how do I just become a better player and whether I go second overall or tenth overall as it might have been for more set you know top five ready for daunting more.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: versus coming out next year and going 10.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: Surely the idea for these kids to be as NFL ready as they possibly can be and to be as experienced and as happy and as comfortable as they possibly can be and whether or not they go second or whether or not they go 9th or 30, especially given an IL money, I kind of, to me it's a little bit of a redundant argument.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I don't know what you feel about it.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I, I would not be surprised if the earnings potential for chamblest was higher and oldness than like that rookie weight scale.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_02]: It drops fast, right?
- 2:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I mean, the slice of the pie that the guys get in the first round and the second round versus what the guys in rounds three, four, five.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: So this is like your strike zone to come out on the winning side of the economic portion of the argument is pretty small.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think you would have got there.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_02]: to be honest, like I personally, from the people that I've talked to in my own evaluation, I think it was a day three guy.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: And at that point, it certainly be who's you, your earnings potentials are better, and then you increase your likelihood of your earnings potentials in the draft to be better when you improve your stock.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I don't know how much he's getting from from Ole Miss for this year, but apparently I'm just looking at on three and Then I have valuation of Chandler's is 1.6 million mostly from one big NIL deal, which is with AT&T.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: So again, if you if you weigh the output 1.6 million, which is obviously life changing money versus potentially fourth or fifth round cash So no brainer, isn't it?
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it really is and that's I'm trying to pull up what is it over the cap has the you can actually go pick by pick on over the cap.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: Which is you can put your mouse over any pick and it'll tell you what the signing bonus is like the 16th pick.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: The signing bonus is 1.2 million dollars.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, okay.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_02]: If you're a fifth round pick, the signing bonus is $500,000.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: So that's if you go 144 you get 539,000, 496 dollars plus your base salary.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_02]: So he would have to be like a fifth round pick or better to come out on the north side of the income, but then like if you make equal money and then you get drafted two rounds higher the next year, you could very easily see how the math swings in your favor where signing bonuses for
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: early third round picks is pushing two million dollars and signing bonuses for early second round picks is six million dollars.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I'm just looking here at some of the the Ole Miss online, the Rebel Walk is a really good Ole Miss site and they say the financial considerations indicate the Chambuses and I'll agree with Ole Miss solely exceeds more than five million.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, again, after low-brainer when you go into the stats of what you just talked about.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: In a 20-27 draft class, kicking the head one year, that might contain an archbinding, a Julian saying, a Lenora Sellers, a Dante Moore, a Darian mentor, a Brendan Saw's, but what's the potential ceiling on a Trinidad Anishableness?
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: It, in terms of what's shaping up to be a, you know, a draft for the ages at this point.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, I think I think you have to contrast it to the needs that teams are having across the league who are the long term, who were the long term stable quarterback situations who have guys that are maybe on long term deals, but maybe in 2027 going in the 2027 or potentially 2028.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: They give you looking to transition.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we already know there's not enough quarterbacks to go around across the league this year.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_02]: We're talking about just kind of shuffling of the chairs of the replacement level starting quarterbacks that exist across the league with
- 6:00[SPEAKER_02]: the genosmiths and the two Atungabalos and the Calamaries and the Kirk cousins is and like the Aaron Rodgers run it back for a year.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_02]: What happens if Daniel Jones goes nuclear again and in the napless.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_02]: Like, if you're a top eight quarterback in that class, like I think you have a pretty good chance to get drafted.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: in the top 50 picks.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_02]: If that whole class, if everybody lives up to their potential and I know that'll be different and some guys that we think will be good won't be good, but then some guys will come out.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: I know where and they'll be.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: These are the puzzle.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think if you're in top eight, I think you're you're sitting pretty well just based on the landscape of quarterbacks across the league, never mind whether you sit third in that pecking order first in that pecking order seven
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: Look, before we get to the combined invite list, I just want to tell you guys about mold core environmental.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: They are South Florida's trusted mold inspection experts.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: If your home or office smells my seat or you're worried about what might be hiding behind your walls, mold core gives you real answers.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: No scare tactics and no guesswork.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: With over 15 years of experience, they're fully licensed and ensured, and they serve everywhere from the keys right up to telehassy.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Because the only thing that you should be growing in South Florida is playoff hopes.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: And still, Fidfels, Carl Adado, all about the lack of playoff hopes for mold testing in contrast.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: You can call mold core environmental at 9.547909, 2.998, that's mold core environmental 9.54709292998.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: Now Carl, there's one or two players.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think left with a slightly musty smell, knowing they weren't going to be combined.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: And the list was released this week of the invites.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Before we get to them, I've had a few questions.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: We've had a few people missed you on Twitter and stuff.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: Can you just give the listeners viewers an overview of how the selection process actually works?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: And why are we end up with some of the names that we're going to get to people missing out?
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: How does it work?
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: Who arranges it and how much involved when I suppose that the teams have?
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so there's what the NIC is led by Jeff Foster, who's been with National, the National Scouting.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: So there's Blasto in National, the two scouting services that kind of supplement the scouting process across the league and they hand out their very top secret summertime evaluations of the players and then they, that's kind of the group of scouts.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: that helps to vet players and and it's what they they also have camps by Blasto does camps and FS does camps and that these two subsections of scouts are largely the ones that do the evaluations and come up with consensus and Jeff Foster who's been the president of
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: not there's some team affiliation.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of hazy from behind the curtain, but that group of people, coordinates, collaborates, consensus, ends up sending out the invites.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_02]: They do character background checks, so there's some guys that if they have concerns off the field, they may not be invited for that regard.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_02]: A no-chameless didn't get an invitation because there was
- 9:20[SPEAKER_02]: Um, an anticipation that he was not going to or was was trying to not be in the class, right?
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: So, um, and as I understand it, that was part of the calculus for why he did not get an invite because there was an expectation he was going to continue to push to go back to school.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then obviously, he was settled before the combine.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: happen.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: So it is a year-long process.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: They have people committed to a summertime evaluation.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: The season happens.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: Their boots on the ground.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: They're at all the college games.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_02]: They're doing the same thing that the national scouts in the area scouts for all the teams are doing.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_02]: And they collectively come up with the list and send the invites.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the league enforces a pretty strict kind of conduct standard done there in terms of, you know, prospects aren't generally permitted to participate.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: If a background check reveals convictions for violence, weapons, domestic violence or sexual offenses in the NFL, then reserves the right to dismiss or to deny any played dismissed by their own university.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, you know, you go back and look at Tyrik Hill with a situation that he had didn't attend the combine after.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: The situation where he punched his pregnant girlfriend, Jeffrey Simmons, wasn't at the con mine, he had a similar violent situation.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, those are the mainstay rules and regulations and how it works, and just work there are a long time as well as he's been the kind of the...
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: the guru the combined for for many many years who were the the biggest shocks and there are shocks every year but for this year who were the the biggest shocks for you of names that didn't make the communists who we won't be seeing in Indianapolis.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah so a couple of who's yours run that list for me with Mikhail Kamara the past rusher Kailin black the running back I was surprised
- 11:11[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, that there was once upon a time and I thought he showcased himself quite well, the senior ball.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_02]: Big toe.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_02]: I thought there was a little bit of momentum there for him, maybe going in that favor.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_02]: Cole was new ski, Texas Tech.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: That's a pound of people guy for me and huge fan of his.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: And then Nolan Roosey from Penn State, the right tackle from Penn State.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: six foot eight.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: You see some nice stuff on tape.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_02]: I've got a mid D3 grade on him.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_02]: I was surprised to find out that he did not get an invitation.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I saw him.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was interesting that the Tournament, Gomerink, the John Carroll receiver, high thought next, and you would have seen up close last two weeks at the senior bar.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't there.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: Some other tackles you mentioned, Nolan Rootshee, the Penn State guy, but Riley Malman, of Wisconsin, I thought Ethan, on the hour, who was had a disappointing year or a bit at a higher state, but still the kind of a,
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: you know, a physical specimen.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Jaden Williams, I thought, all of the old misquiet.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: I've arranged in his tape.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't get in my either.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: And then you mentioned obviously your guy, Cole was new's going to go out for that last week, Landon Robinson, the all-actions sort of know his guard, undersized knows how from the baby, not getting invited.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think as well, you know, in a kind of, there's some very interesting centers in this class in terms of, you know, you look at the top of the,
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: the field with, I suppose, some of the injured guys.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: notably, Conaloo, but also some of the guys who are making position changes potentially, look at Brian Parker at Duke, and then you've got kind of, I sound hacked, Parker Browse has been kind of injured, but I wanted about like a guy like Conal Tollison, you know, the fifth year player, 40 plus starts, three years starter at Centre for Missouri in the SEC, you know, they were on the Joe Moore midseason watch list, the Missouri offensive line, I was quite surprised
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm going to go back from I or two.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: Do my Amy, yes, I'm going to do my as well.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and he'd had another good strong sort of start to draft season in terms of the world start, guys.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: What impact do you think?
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because obviously, you know, personally and pridefully disappointing for these players, but, you know, what impact, because we'll get to it in a sec, but just in terms of the the inability to be able to show yourself in this particular phase is
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: disrupting, I suppose, for a prospect.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a Dan Velari, the Syracuse Tire and if people have talked about it's kind of being a mid to late day three guy and you kind of feel like you're stock rising a little bit to not be invited.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: Jamal Haynes, one of my favourite third downback is the Georgia Tech kid.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it doesn't get any invite.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: It must be a little bit disorientating to, and I don't know whether or not these kids get told whether or not there was a reason why they're not invited.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: But it can be a kind of a
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: a disappointing part of the process for these kids coming.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and it is it's it's a temple event for this whole process, right?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_02]: It is the world's biggest.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: football job fair and it's eight days long and players are there for four days running through and like everybody gets the universal medicals, everybody gets the universal time for the speed dating and the 15 minute interviews and everybody gets the universal on field workouts and the universal testing and you know to not have that
- 14:35[SPEAKER_02]: data point, it is a blow.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: Now, it's certainly not something that is a kiss of death for your outlook for the draft.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I think everything kind of at that point becomes a little bit more regional with the pressure because of teams are going to do 30 visits.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to do 30 visits.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're not going to get 30 visits, that means you're going to be leaning on the local workouts that teams are able to bring in throughout the pro-dray, throughout the pro-day window.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_02]: Um, obviously that that pro day testing becomes vital.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: You really don't have the baked in excuse of, oh, I'll do it at my pro day.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like guys do it the combine when they choose not to participate in certain ends.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_02]: So it really means you, you need to do everything in your power.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_02]: That that pro day date on your calendar.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_02]: You are peaking.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: no questions asked because that's the only data point that they're going to get that replicates this kind of stuff that you do at the NFL combine.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: Now you can go do a 30 visit and do an interview and see the facilities and have their doctors poke and prod you and put you on the white board and maybe do some workout stuff like all that stuff can happen.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: But the universal application of ABC, X, Y, and Z across the board for all the ways that they physically, medically, psychologically, personally, gauge and probe you, you're not going to have that.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_02]: And part of the appeal of the combine to is it is a grind and it's a grind intentionally, like that they purposely put,
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: the workout at the end, right?
- 16:08[SPEAKER_02]: They want to put you through the meat ringer a little bit and they want to see how you come on the other side and how you handle all that.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_02]: So you kind of lose that element of it too, which is a bummer for those guys that don't get that in.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 100%.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you're, let's just pick a plate.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a Omar Cooper Jr, the Indiana receiver who came out, if he didn't get invited to the combine, there's also that kind of, you want to pre-vise self against your peers.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Don't you want to, if McIleman's running, if can't I'll take this running, if Jordan Tyson's running, if Manakai Field's is right, you want to, you want to prove yourself against these guys.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: You want to say, okay, Chris Buzell, or, you know, Denzel Boston or Josh Cameron, I'm going to line up and I'm going to go Manoe Manoe Manoe and I'm going to, you know, there's a,
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's a pride, it's a, you know, I think we mentioned at the top there, there is something private about it.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: Quick quiz question for you before we get to break and haven't warned you about this.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: Free first round picks who are not invited to the combine.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: Can you name them?
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry to do this to you.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'd offer top of my head.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: The long time ago, actually, to be fair, a long time ago, you know, you're probably a kid.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: Aaron Jones, 1988, you probably were in May, you know, I was negative one for that one.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: Eric Swam, obviously didn't go to didn't go to college in 1991.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: Darian Gordon, 93 corner.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: No, I tell you.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_02]: It makes me feel better that I was younger than my daughter is now at five for all of them.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_02]: I let take a great pride in my draft knowledge, but that's I am going to steal that.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going to drop that on my co-host of Lockdown NFL Scouting, Joe Marino next week.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_02]: Excellent.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_03]: And let's have a guess on.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: He's three years older than me.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_02]: So he was like eight for the last one.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe he'll get it.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: makes me feel so old.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, I mean, we talk about that the flip side and the disappointment.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: Doug Baldwin, Julian Edelmern, James Harrison, I'll see you in your, was a second rounder, Wes Welker, Antonio Gates, Wall of Fame.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: All didn't get invited to the fight.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, as Carl says, there is absolutely a pathway to the NFL.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go to break now and when we come back, we'll talk about Caleb Downs a little bit.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about the Tennessee tight and sitting there at Pig 4 with a new coach and staff and new head coach and Robert Sala, but first here is Alf who's going to pay some bills for us.

- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back, as I'll say to the low ridge and draw show all about that Mediterranean lunch.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yesterday morning, can't Albert Breard have sports illustrated and the MMQB tweeted this, I feel comfortable saying Caleb Downs and he is no Ohio State alum Albert but nevertheless.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: I feel comfortable saying Caleb Downs is the best for all player.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: In the 2026 draft class he won't be the first pick you have to consider upside positional value and all that and there are guys with more of all that stuff But no one in this class is a better football player, which then led to a quote to tweet from from Dame Brugler of the athletic Which said this fun question I've been asking scouts Caleb downs is the best safety prospect you've personally scouted since a few have answered ever
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, Dane said that for one scout it came down to Downs and Dowing James and he lead towards Downs, Carl Hamilton would obviously be in the mix, although it didn't run very well at the combine.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: Eric Berry, physical kind of specimen would obviously be another, for those of you at home thinking about that Sean Taylor, that was 21 years ago, which again makes me feel super old, and I suppose a lot of those scouts weren't have been scouting for the last 20 years, but do you think the scouts are right in terms of what they're telling Dane in terms of Caleb being the best,
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: Safety prospect, they've scoured over the last two decades.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so I've been doing Player Eval since 2012.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm on year 14 and in that period of time, there have been one safety.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: Now, too, that have been my number one overall player.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_02]: Caleb Downs is my top player in this year's class.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: It would take something like the tapes tape, right?
- 21:08[SPEAKER_02]: It would take something monumental to happen for that to change.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: Kyle Hamilton was the other one for me.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_02]: And you see the vision and Kyle, he didn't run as well, but he made him a big, right?
- 21:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that is a big football player to play in space with the instincts and the transitional elements and kind of the fluidity that he has that that I thought made him a really special player.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I think Caleb's, he's certainly not built like Kyle, I think Eric Barry is a good name to invoke based on their obviously very familiar with Barry's career and how that went and knowing what his draft profile was liking and getting fifth overall.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think Durwin was a little bit more explosive, but the commonality between a lot of these guys is just the versatility, right?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: And the football IQ people look at Isaiah Simmons's and frown upon the versatility because he can
- 22:08[SPEAKER_02]: He was asked to do a lot of things, but when you do all of the things and you do them all at an elite level because of your football instincts, that's what really gets me up in my chair.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_02]: So anything before 2012 would be speaking out of turn for me, Caleb Downs is not going to have as high of the film grade for me as what Kyle Hamilton did.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_02]: but he's the only other cat that's in that ballpark.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_02]: So, if you've been in for about the same amount of time and that's your answer, I get why that would be the case.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this elements aren't there in terms of what he's able to do all for.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Abu Dhabiqa, a Brian Brown, I think, you know, in terms of how that position is evolved, because, you know, and I'm older than you.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: But when I was growing up, you know, running a lot, and, you know, those are the kind of the guys that were, you know, for us as Dolphin's fans, Louis Oliver, Jarvis Williams, there was the, the, the great safety, um, who died recently, can easily, uh, Seattle.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: just kind of very not one-dimensional, but in terms of, you know, the game was just different, the game was played differently.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you had four downline, and you had three big linebackers, yeah, three corners, and you had two safety.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: And one could run around a lot, and was pretty athletic, and the other one was just, you know, not the snort out of people, and was £220.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_01]: And the game was changed so much now, you know, in terms of branch being able to play all those multiple positions Hamilton.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: The physical freak that he is being able to play all those multiple positions.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: And he talked about the tape being the tape, he got back to Notre Dame and see all the stuff he was able to do.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: And kind of superseded what he was able to run and downs with the intelligence and the instincts and there.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: The versatility, where would you put yourself for a, let's say you, let's say you're, uh, you pick second and you take Caleb down second overalls and you're just defensive corner, where would you be lining him up day one week one what what would you be asking him to do in terms of his position.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's tricky, right, because you don't want to fall into the trap of putting too much on the menu too fast and I and cognitively aware of that I would probably have him as one of my my base to deep guys and then if I had a big nickel package and he was comfortable doing the nickel stuff right off the jump.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_02]: that would be on the table for me.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: I wouldn't be super keen on dime, like big dime, and living in bignicle all the time, and asking to be backers, and process the triangle reads, and the king on the run fits, and inserting in the beat, like
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to be a lot, right?
- 24:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like so I would lean into the coverage appeal.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_02]: I would lean into the physicality to play in the nickel to kind of fill that D gap and be aggressive and be a tackler and he's a really good tackler.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_02]: He's got 574 snaps for his career in the slot.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: He's got 920 snaps deep.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's almost 1500 snaps that he has kind of on that string.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I would leave him on that string to start.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_02]: They say,
- 25:15[SPEAKER_02]: The apex defender and the two deep safeties, you could tie those guys on a string and how that string changes before the snap to where those guys go after the snap is the way that a lot of quarterback scoval and and why receivers go about reading the coverage and dictating what the coverage is.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_02]: I would leave him there to start.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then as you get more comfortable, you want to get him in on the second level and you want to do big time stuff like that's probably a year two thing for me that I would really look to ramp up, but it's all a part of the three year plan, but the one year plan for me is I'm just raising the floor with instinctual play and coverage in the middle of the field.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, knowing that he's going to grow into all those things that you're exactly exactly.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: That whole downs thing kind of leads me nasty into pick four in the first round, which to me, I think is really super intriguing because The Tennessee Titans sitting there with a new head coach and Robert Sala, one of the best defensive minds I think of the past decade in terms of scheme and what he's been able to do certainly with the 49ers.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: He brought in Brian Deibord to run the offense, super smart move, I think, because you can almost, you know, you can almost hand that off to Deibord and say, look, Cam Ward and everything that's associated with that.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: You've been ahead coached, you've been a, you know, a high-powered coordinator in college in the NFL, etc, etc.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: And you obviously have Ward at quarterback who started to show.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's a pretty nice developmental stuff down the stretch, surrounded by a pretty poor
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: as he hits this kind of crucial part of his development, right?
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: So why do see that you have, I mean, you have L.I.A.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: main or and Chimerie D.K.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_01]: Calvary still around, but he kind of makes sense as a car or a kind of very late round trade candidate given his lack of production last year.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: In a deep way to see the class, the question is, is the kind of real value at four.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: But then they also have big issues.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: Edge, you've got G-Hard Ward and Arden Key, both reagents, which kind of leaves Femi-Ella Dayjo and Jaylen Harrow, and not a lot else.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: All the Dayjo is kind of a detrimental question mark.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: I suppose you missed much of his rookie year.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: Harrow is a late round 2024 guy, 7th rounder, I think.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: throw it a bit, promise down the stretch and you have a draft obviously with Dane and Bailey and Rhys and women, those are those number one to the Raiders.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: There's gonna be at least one of those three guys on the board by the very nature of the fact that there will literally be one of those guys on the board.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: And then you have Paula.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: The only cornerbacks of the Titans have under contract to Marcus Harris and the Jerry Sney, both of whom ended the year I think on IR, and Sney, again, like Ridley, is a, you know, a potential kind of thing.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_01]: In a draft with German McCoy and Mansour Delane and Caleb Downs, who could obviously play Nicholas, he said five hundred and seventy four snaps in the slot, at a super high level.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: So, before I throw a spanner in the works with that pick, what do you think Chad Brinker and
- 28:01[SPEAKER_01]: and my Borgansi will do here.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think they think will be knowing that you've got the franchise court about can he need to help?
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: But you've also, yeah, your defense is kind of just bereft of, you know, Jeffrey Simmer's a side, you kind of bereft the talum.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I look at the hole on that side of the ball defensively and there's not a lot of like true blue chip players.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: So whether it's Caleb Downs or Ruben Dane, Bane or Arbel Reese, like those are all blue chip players.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_02]: I like the wider severs, but I like a lot of wider severs in this year's last and I look, they got pickset.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_02]: 66, 101, 35, you should be able to get some bites of the apple.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's some outside perimeter players on both sides of the ball there.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: your blue chip opportunities are at four.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: And in my opinion, they're all defensive players.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_02]: So that for me is I get we want to build around Cam.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_02]: Cam's at least got the rapport with DK and Iomanor and what shoot even Gunner Helm has a repeat right in.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_02]: And Dave Ols done some nice stuff out of a 11 person all that I think Helm could be a good fit for in the passing game.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_02]: So I think they have some pieces there for me that fourth pick it's I'm I'm going defense and I'm I'm looking forward to finding the right fit for a wide receiver somewhere in those next four picks in the top 101 but that pick it for for me man that's a tough sell to to not go defense.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it feels, if Ruben Baines on the board, it feels like kind of natural fit in terms of just what you can do and how Sala might move him around that front, especially on third downs, made the road, you know, reducing him inside.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: My spanner in the works here was for four seasons obviously Sala had a feature first ballot Hall of Famer, Brad Warner, as a star of his defense and those two very much doing to the hip Sala says that
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: The Warner is essentially the on field extension of him on the field.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: Warner says that salary is he goes in the fortune teller on my fortune teller who will out him to act and pray and pray freely in his own words and the losing intimacy really, really sucks.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: So with all that in mind, then I present you.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: a fourth option at Pick 4.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: A man that Daniel Jeremiah himself and others, not just Daniel have said, reminds them very much of Fred Warner, and that would be sunny starts.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: They'd be a Ohio State line back.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: A son of a Super Bowl winner, super serious football brain team captain, five star kid, who's played multiple positions in that defense, was a safety, a five star safety.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: At what point is salad, do you think how going to be in the years the front office about this kid
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: positional valley would frown at it, but just given what he's had before with Fred Warner and what he might see in a guy like something.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that some of this comes down to opportunity cost.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think a little bit of a draft, right?
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: And you're talking my language, because I just put out a big board update last week.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: And number one was Caleb Downs, Ruben, Bain was number two, R.V.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_02]: Reese was number three, and Sunny Styles was number four.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: So we got the right names in the conversation.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, right as if picked for it.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think you'd be heart-pressed, especially in a draft where like the premium positions are, not as strong as you'd like them to be at the top of the draft.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_02]: You hate invoking the word safe for a player, but situation transcended.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's a better way to put it.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think Sony styles as a situation transcended player.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's exceptionally well equipped to land in any spot and perform it at an exceptionally high level and help to kind of change.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think we talk enough about with let alone teams now starting to go to 13 personnel.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_02]: with all the two high shell stuff that goes on across the league, the stress for covering the space and the pace and the space of today's NFL game, it's trickle down to the second level.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's no longer you need that single high post free safety who can go challenge plays 20 plus yards down field outside the numbers on either side of the field who play center field.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: because you've built in two guys to play back there to remove the explosive plays.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: So now it's, we're creating play action and we're trying to attack between the second and the third level of the defense.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_02]: So who are the second level players that can handle that stress?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: can handle getting into my run read and then getting out and hitting my landmarks and cutting routes across the middle and getting my eyes back to the quarterback to make plays on the ball and not being vulnerable because I'm pressing and I have to really work to get to my landmarks and I being manipulated by the backfield action.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, certainly can do that.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_02]: Now, what I predict right now that Sunny goes it for probably not, I think, you know, he's probably somewhere eight through 12.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think you think about the bangles in that block.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think about the dolphins in that block, you think about the cowboys in that block.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think they have a home-run, especially with what they've done at the fence of tackle the past couple of investments
- 33:15[SPEAKER_02]: that's a black hole for Dallas, right?
- 33:17[SPEAKER_02]: So for Tennessee, I think the argument becomes especially with Robert with how much he likes to rotate the defensive front.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: They like to have a lot of guys that take a lot of snaps.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have the horses up front to do that?
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: And I think the answer is unequivocally no.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_02]: So for me, it's more bane, especially because you feel like he can do some of the what the idea was supposed to be for Solomon Thomas to rush inside at times.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: He could be a power end that you could play over top of a tackle.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_02]: He can rush from the edge.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: um, that kind of players not there.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that can be a really valuable piece, especially because they're outside past rush.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't do it for me.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I like familial adesios super intense player that I want to buy in on long term, but he was a blank slate last year as far as a past rusher.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: And I would not be putting all my eggs in that basket
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the thing, I mean, there's lots and we'll talk about sunny stars as we get close to the job.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, this is a kid who reclassified in high school.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: So, came to the Ohio State as a 17 year old.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, he'll spend most of the 20, 20, 60s and there's a 21 year old rookie.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what I love about him is that, you know,
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: He was this safety prospect.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: He played all over the positions in high school, but he came in as a safety and played safety early on.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then James Laura and I took him to the line back across there, just transitioned him to that spot to the second level.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: And you throw a kid out on a high estate and you kind of, you hope for the, you take on board the athletic tools and all that sort of stuff.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: But you kind of think, well, what are the numbers going, what's he going to deliver?
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because he's learning a new position he's playing.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: Michigan, he's playing all these, you know, he's gonna play in the playoffs.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't potentially play in the national championship game.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's a lot a lot of lot going on.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: And he ends up with a hundred tackles, six sacks, eleven tackles for a lot of some five past deflections as a guy's literally just been told to go out there.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_01]: And this is his first, first season.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: To me, it's just a kind of prototypical, and you may just get right at the top there.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: The prototypical kind of modern lineback of for this game that we play now in 2026, the FBI,
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: the football intelligence, the length.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's what's sixth for, I think you're coming at six, four, two, three, two, thirty, five, the range, the twitch, the versatility in terms of what you can do, the downhill explosion, the force in the run game.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: And then the past, last year, is the kind of this nickel blitzer, the understanding and feel for coverage is, I just think, you know, it's been injury free.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it was a basketball kid, we talked about it in one of the previous episodes, a basketball kid, people thought you might go and play basketball.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: Your knee injury is ever had as a broke his tibia, but broke his tibia playing basketball when he was a junior in high school.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: So I just think, you know, if somebody's saying to me that
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: In a draft where, like you say, the lack of blue chip players is kind of there and it's obvious.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: If somebody's going to say to me, look, this guy might just be another Fred Waller.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's a really hard pass.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: If you're, you know, if you're the Tennessee Times, especially as you've got the head coach who molded that kid that, you know, out BYU in a second round into being this first ballot Hall of Famer, which he undoubtedly will be.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Where would you put, if you're, again, I pop you in the shoes of the Titans front office, who would you be taking, if you had, you know, your opportunity and, you know, all the guys that we mentioned were still on the board, who, how would you stack those picks in terms of look, you know,
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this is where the value of a horizontal draft board has compared to a vertical draft board comes in because I can see here and say, oh, well, it's so many styles as for and Caleb downs is one.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: So you should take the guy at one, but in reality, they're in the same tier, right?
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: They are, I think my tier one cut off is after player number five.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_02]: So Jeremiah love being the other player who's in that kind of that tier one of prospects for me.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: So you put all those and this is why teams sometimes why teams take up all that time on the clock because you know they surely they go through all the mocks and they simulate these situations and hypotheticals but when you're going through it and the chips are down and you say we've got
- 37:41[SPEAKER_02]: of our rankings.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_02]: What is the economic windfall of each one of those positions?
- 37:49[SPEAKER_02]: What is the X's and O's windfall?
- 37:51[SPEAKER_02]: Who gives us the most flexibility?
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: What is the opportunity cost for other picks that we're going to make later on in the draft?
- 37:58[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 37:58[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where you really
- 38:02[SPEAKER_02]: to kill to be a fly on the wall.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, all the conversations for all those because there's positional coaches, there's head coaches, there's there's regional scouts, there's scouting directors, there's the general manager himself, and he's got to tie all those opinions together and make the best decision he possibly can.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_02]: And I think for me, when I think about the economic element of a top four pick, when I think about the needs on the roster plus the flexibility that can be afforded to you down the road, both long term and in this year's draft.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_02]: If Ruben Baines on the board, because I like a lot of safeties in this year's class.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_02]: I like wider seabers in this year's class.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: I like corners with some depth in this year's class.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_02]: Pass rush for me after the first four guys, which are probably all going to be top 20 picks when it's all said and done, I get a little shaky, a little faster.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, there's, I like Gabe Accus from Illinois, and I like Zion Young from Missouri.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: That level of complete profile and defending the run, which is an issue for Akus and the past rush explosiveness that I think is a little bit missing from Zion.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_02]: You get all of that in Ruben Bane and I get a guy that can line up inside or outside with how I rush it.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_02]: So that conversation for me would be, okay, who we comfortable paying this rookie wage scale contract to?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's Ruben Bay.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_02]: Where do we think we can find other players at other positions?
- 39:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think I can find another safety.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_02]: I like even if I don't like him anywhere as much as I like Caleb Downs.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_02]: I'd still like, right?
- 39:41[SPEAKER_02]: And you go through all that.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think Ruben Bay would be.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and also you talk about safety depth.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: You talk about receiver depth.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: You talk about corner depth, but also it's a it's a decent off ball line back across as well as the in terms, you know, we talked about somebody's a Jacob Rodriguez and land a bat on the you tucking it and bet you are again, and you
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: Jimmy Rolder at Michigan and all of these guys, you got Anthony Hill and CJ Allen and all these touring York.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, there is depth, I think, for the Titans in those positions, actually on defense, where it's just too hard to pass up.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: A garlic ribbon, I think we're probably both on the same page there.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for listening.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for watching.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: You can catch Carla A to Z sports, as always, an app car grabs on Twitter.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: You can catch me on my sub stack, which is simply called the low red zone, just like this podcast.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm Sye Clancy on Twitter.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for watching us and say thanks for listening and we will see you in seven days time.
