Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to the ned Palty.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Hello everybody at home, and welcome to House Lights, House
- 0:23Speaker 2: of Bluth, specifically Don Bluth, as we talk about nineteen
- 0:27Speaker 2: eighty nine's All Dogs Go to Heaven starring the one
- 0:32Speaker 2: and only Bert Reynolds. And yes, this is going to
- 0:39Speaker 2: be an interesting episode because this was this was a
- 0:45Speaker 2: movie that I owned on VHS, and when I watched
- 0:50Speaker 2: it in preparation for this podcast, I asked myself the question,
- 0:54Speaker 2: why on earth did I own this on VHS? So
- 0:57Speaker 2: I'm your co host, Tristan Rudel, and with me they
- 1:00Speaker 2: always are is Darren Moser and John Mills. Now, Darren,
- 1:07Speaker 2: this is you championed for Don Bluth, and so I
- 1:11Speaker 2: want to know, like, did you have a connection to
- 1:14Speaker 2: All Dogs Go to Heaven or like was this one
- 1:17Speaker 2: that you missed or were you a blue fan when
- 1:20Speaker 2: it came out? When you're like, oh my god, I
- 1:22Speaker 2: got to see the next Don Bluth film in nineteen
- 1:24Speaker 2: eighty nine, or or.
- 1:26Speaker 3: What did you that would have been precocious for Darren
- 1:29Speaker 3: at that age.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I just say I'll be I'll say two of the
- 1:33Speaker 4: three movies that were really on my raidar for Don Bluth.
- 1:36Speaker 4: We've already hit and one of the third one is
- 1:39Speaker 4: not this one. So yeah, no, this was not on
- 1:43Speaker 4: my my championship list. Honestly, I could not remember the
- 1:47Speaker 4: plot at all. It had been forever and so I'm like, well,
- 1:52Speaker 4: let's give it a shake, and really glad I wasn't
- 1:56Speaker 4: also thinking, you know, let's see if the kids like
- 1:59Speaker 4: this one to No, well, let's just pre watch it,
- 2:02Speaker 4: because oh my gosh, this movie is a trip. But yeah, no,
- 2:07Speaker 4: this one again, I've seen the part of seeing clips
- 2:13Speaker 4: of the most is like the very end goodbye between
- 2:16Speaker 4: Charlie and a Marie, and it's still very movie like.
- 2:20Speaker 4: It's a very moving scene, especially in the context of
- 2:24Speaker 4: you know what what happened with the actress. But and
- 2:28Speaker 4: Burt Reynolds, like voices is the tops in this whole movie.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I will give it that. It's very well voice acted.
- 2:37Speaker 4: But yeah, there's there's a lot of crazy stuff going
- 2:44Speaker 4: on in this movie, and it's unfortunately I feel like
- 2:47Speaker 4: our trajectory and Don Bluth is going down hill and
- 2:53Speaker 4: this movie is not going to help that at at all.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But I love that.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So Spielberg was going to produce this one, but Bluth
- 3:06Speaker 2: was basically sick of his crap.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Was yeah, where Don Bluth is like, yeah, I really
- 3:15Speaker 4: hated like having to do with Spielberg told me and
- 3:17Speaker 4: making crap tons of money. Darn Don, Like, I'm like,
- 3:24Speaker 4: we all wish Spielberg would tell us what to do.
- 3:27Speaker 5: But see, you can't put a price on artistic integrity
- 3:30Speaker 5: and has no.
- 3:32Speaker 4: No, the price is low and the box office is
- 3:36Speaker 4: what the price is.
- 3:38Speaker 5: When a director has a vision like this and the
- 3:41Speaker 5: thing is that no, well, I mean the thing is,
- 3:42Speaker 5: I want to go back to something you said where
- 3:44Speaker 5: you had forgotten the plot, and I'd like to offer
- 3:47Speaker 5: that possibly Don Bluth did too, because I'm not entirely
- 3:53Speaker 5: sure what happened. There were dogs, there was talking magical
- 3:58Speaker 5: kid talks to dogs. Sure, there's like a whole society
- 4:02Speaker 5: going on that's a complete mirror of human society.
- 4:06Speaker 4: But somehow Mondy is important but also not at the
- 4:10Speaker 4: same time.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Yeah, also one is permanently banished from heaven but not really. Okay,
- 4:19Speaker 5: all right, so we learned by the end that the
- 4:22Speaker 5: entire ordeal and the thing that sets up the crisis
- 4:25Speaker 5: of the movie, that that drives the protagonist forward, was
- 4:29Speaker 5: not really there, Like it was just a gag.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I mean, look, I.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Get it, I get the whole thing, but there's no
- 4:35Speaker 5: payoff in this movie. I'll tip my hand not going
- 4:39Speaker 5: to be a high star rating for me on this one,
- 4:41Speaker 5: because at the end of it, I was like, whoa,
- 4:44Speaker 5: what was the point? Like it's it's like a bunch
- 4:47Speaker 5: of people watched a movie, watched old Disney movies, and
- 4:50Speaker 5: they were like, hey, yeah, let's pull a couple of
- 4:52Speaker 5: things out from that up to it, including making the
- 4:54Speaker 5: little girl looks so much like snow White that I'm
- 4:58Speaker 5: sitting there just going just looks exactly like snow White,
- 5:02Speaker 5: Like I know, the haircuts different and everything like that,
- 5:04Speaker 5: but like it's it's almost eerie how much it evokes
- 5:08Speaker 5: snow White in terms of like the way she moves
- 5:12Speaker 5: in the way that like even the color palette for
- 5:15Speaker 5: the character is just evocative of it.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And I was just like it was odds.
- 5:21Speaker 5: It really is like this movie exists as a tribute
- 5:24Speaker 5: to childhood memories of things they appreciated in old Disney movies,
- 5:30Speaker 5: with the added layer of the fact that all of
- 5:32Speaker 5: the main characters are criminals and terrible people like that. Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 5: Like though, I just who who would a kid relate
- 5:45Speaker 5: to in this movie? The little girl I guess question mark.
- 5:49Speaker 2: The little girl that was captured by a gangster locked
- 5:53Speaker 2: in a basement where she begged to go outside and
- 5:56Speaker 2: see the sunlight.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the one.
- 6:00Speaker 4: That's the one.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, that's the one. I think that was.
- 6:03Speaker 2: That was the moment that I actually texted you, John,
- 6:06Speaker 2: where I said, who hurt Don Bluth? What was his
- 6:11Speaker 2: childhood like? That made him want to tell stories like this?
- 6:15Speaker 3: It doesn't it doesn't seem happy. Yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So John, where when did you first see this?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Did you see this as a kid?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Nope, this is my first viewing of All Dogs Go
- 6:24Speaker 2: to Heaven? Oh man, So you didn't even have a
- 6:28Speaker 2: nostalgia filter or anything.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Not, not a bit.
- 6:32Speaker 5: I remember ads for it at the time, like way
- 6:35Speaker 5: back when, And at this point, I'm very thankful that
- 6:38Speaker 5: I'm the old man of the group because I had
- 6:40Speaker 5: aged past this by the time it came out. You know,
- 6:44Speaker 5: I was already watching die Hard and Batman and all
- 6:46Speaker 5: of those things, and I was like, I wasn't gonna
- 6:49Speaker 5: go see All Dogs Go to Heaven. And I'm grateful.
- 6:51Speaker 5: I feel like I dodged a bullet on this one.
- 6:53Speaker 4: So you know, I think this came out the same
- 6:57Speaker 4: weekend as Little Mermaid, which.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Great, great release window timing, well done. Everybody take a
- 7:05Speaker 5: landed the two before. He's gone up against them and
- 7:09Speaker 5: done decent. But this one just happened to be the
- 7:13Speaker 5: kickoff of the little known thing as the Disney Renaissance
- 7:17Speaker 5: and promptly squashed.
- 7:19Speaker 2: There should have been some corporate spy somewhere who, like
- 7:23Speaker 2: four months out, was just like, we gotta change it.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I saw a rough cut. No we can't do this.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Yeah, that telex Like no, you know what, Now, I
- 7:35Speaker 5: want to create a movie where it's like the story
- 7:38Speaker 5: of the guy who saw the rough cut that was
- 7:39Speaker 5: gonna tip off Bluth in the studio, and then like
- 7:43Speaker 5: the telex gets intercepted and it's like this evil Disney
- 7:46Speaker 5: henchman and mouse ears. It's like, oh no, sir, we
- 7:48Speaker 5: won't be sending that. I think guy just disappears for
- 7:51Speaker 5: the rest of it, you know, goes off. Make it.
- 7:54Speaker 3: They can do it.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Like the Tetris movie that just came out on Apple TV.
- 7:57Speaker 2: That would work there, you go, I would watch that movie.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It would be better than this. Yes, corporate, the corporate
- 8:04Speaker 2: espionage that we just made up in our minds about.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Has more plot coherence than would.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Be better than this.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just so John, were you surprised by the
- 8:16Speaker 2: point that we saw Charlie go to hell? Literally? Were
- 8:21Speaker 2: you surprised at all?
- 8:24Speaker 3: I don't think anything could have surprised me by that point.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I really don't.
- 8:28Speaker 5: It was I was surprised from the very first frame
- 8:31Speaker 5: where I was like, there's a jail break going on.
- 8:35Speaker 5: This is a pretty hardcore were shooting at the dogs? Yeah,
- 8:39Speaker 5: they were shooting at the dogs and I but you
- 8:45Speaker 5: know what, though that very beginning, I was like, Okay,
- 8:47Speaker 5: these are the rules. It's dog world, right, Like there're
- 8:51Speaker 5: gonna be other animals and everything. There's no human world
- 8:53Speaker 5: in existence. This is just animal planet. Okay, I get it, right,
- 8:58Speaker 5: those are the rules. And then they introduced people, and
- 9:00Speaker 5: I think at that point my brain just was like, oh, no,
- 9:03Speaker 5: there's no rules here.
- 9:05Speaker 3: It's it's you know, no, I mean there's kind of rule.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, it is a bit of a gear
- 9:12Speaker 4: there's a lot of gear shifting, and the gears are
- 9:14Speaker 4: grinding in this movie where you're going and going for me.
- 9:18Speaker 4: The WTF pause moment was when Charlie and and the
- 9:24Speaker 4: girl fall down into the sewer and then are picked
- 9:28Speaker 4: up by like Louisiana rats and taken to King Gator,
- 9:33Speaker 4: and I'm like, what is going on? Like I was
- 9:38Speaker 4: so taken aback and it's like a five minute segment
- 9:43Speaker 4: and then it's over and you're like what what? What
- 9:46Speaker 4: did he eat his head?
- 9:48Speaker 3: And like that was a tree?
- 9:50Speaker 4: And I get I get, like it feels like, okay,
- 9:53Speaker 4: we got to keep the scene in guys. I know
- 9:56Speaker 4: it doesn't make any sense, but we have to have
- 9:59Speaker 4: it because there's no reason then that the gator doesn't
- 10:01Speaker 4: show up to say even later. But that's the thinnest
- 10:05Speaker 4: of connection it was.
- 10:07Speaker 2: It was a doscex macana that they had to have
- 10:11Speaker 2: some sort of you know, narrative thread between it. John,
- 10:16Speaker 2: I think that was the second time that I text
- 10:18Speaker 2: you to well.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Watch this movie.
- 10:21Speaker 5: I won't quote the exact language because it's not fit
- 10:25Speaker 5: for this show, but it was what the bleep in
- 10:27Speaker 5: my watching I think was the text message that I got.
- 10:31Speaker 2: An alligator is singing for no reason.
- 10:35Speaker 5: And my reply in all caps was none at all,
- 10:38Speaker 5: Like yep, there was yeah, Look, I mean, the thing
- 10:42Speaker 5: is like how boring is it to sit here or
- 10:45Speaker 5: just like curb stomp this thing, because I could do that,
- 10:48Speaker 5: I will do that. But I mean I'm dying to
- 10:52Speaker 5: note like I didn't even get you know. I was like, okay,
- 10:55Speaker 5: well there's music. At least sometimes the music can redeem
- 10:58Speaker 5: a movie. But while it was a bold choice to
- 11:03Speaker 5: have mister Reynolds sing his own parts, I don't know
- 11:06Speaker 5: if it was the best choice for mister Reynolds to
- 11:10Speaker 5: sing his songs.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And that, Okay, that really pisses me off because I
- 11:15Speaker 2: believe that Burt Reynolds as Charlie is fantastic. His performance
- 11:21Speaker 2: is really well done. Like, especially as an actor as
- 11:26Speaker 2: well known as Burt Reynolds and him being known as
- 11:29Speaker 2: kind of a cab and a loose cannon certain times
- 11:33Speaker 2: and kind of gruff, you'd think that he would just
- 11:36Speaker 2: kind of blow off a voice acting assignment. But he didn't, Like,
- 11:40Speaker 2: he didn't at all, Like he really brought his a game.
- 11:44Speaker 2: And apparently behind the scenes, Dom de Luiz and Burt
- 11:47Speaker 2: Reynolds have a friendship because they've been in so many
- 11:50Speaker 2: movies together and they film they recorded their lines together
- 11:54Speaker 2: in the same room and actually did some improv here
- 11:57Speaker 2: and there, and Blue said that they came up with
- 11:59Speaker 2: stuff that was better in the script. And I think
- 12:01Speaker 2: from scene one when they're breaking out of prison, like
- 12:05Speaker 2: you can really tell that they are recording in the
- 12:07Speaker 2: same room together. And I don't think a lot of
- 12:10Speaker 2: people know how rare that is in animated movies to
- 12:15Speaker 2: actually have people record lines together. Futurama. The cast of
- 12:18Speaker 2: Futurama does it all the time where they're all in
- 12:20Speaker 2: the room together, which I think is fantastic, but it's
- 12:23Speaker 2: it's it's very rare.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I would say I totally agree. I
- 12:29Speaker 4: think Burt Reynolds, Dom Deluiz, and Judith Barci, they are
- 12:36Speaker 4: voice acting. It's amazing in this movie, and even Dom
- 12:41Speaker 4: like I feel like this maybe it was the role,
- 12:44Speaker 4: like Itchy is kind of tap tampered down a little
- 12:49Speaker 4: bit of the Dom craziness, like versus the crow in
- 12:54Speaker 4: Secretive Nim, which was just bouncing off the walls. This
- 12:58Speaker 4: is at least like And maybe it's because even though
- 13:03Speaker 4: Itchy is Charlie's best friend, he progressively spends more and
- 13:08Speaker 4: more in time with uh with Anne Marie, and so
- 13:12Speaker 4: we get less and less Itchy time and so that
- 13:15Speaker 4: kind of balances it. As far as just screen presence.
- 13:20Speaker 2: John, what did you feel about the the chemistry between
- 13:25Speaker 2: Itchy and Charlie. Did you feel the friendship there from
- 13:27Speaker 2: the voice actors or did it not come through for you?
- 13:31Speaker 5: For that, I'm biased simply because of the fact that
- 13:35Speaker 5: I grew up watching Canniball Run and so, and I
- 13:38Speaker 5: knew that Burt Reynolds and Dom Delawi's were friends. They
- 13:42Speaker 5: had like they had a natural screen chemistry to begin with.
- 13:45Speaker 5: It had been established in everybody's brains well before this movie.
- 13:50Speaker 5: And so I can't answer, honestly because in my brain,
- 13:54Speaker 5: I'm just I'm like, well, of course they sound great together,
- 13:57Speaker 5: because they're Reynolds and Deloies.
- 14:00Speaker 3: They're the greatest thing.
- 14:01Speaker 4: And okay, fine, watch Cannonball again. Geez, you twisted my arm.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Like, hey, listen, I'm not vouching for Cannonball. And I'm
- 14:08Speaker 5: sure that there is a lot of humor in that
- 14:10Speaker 5: that's very cringe by today's standards.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Oh, they're totally but it's a guilty pleasure to be had,
- 14:16Speaker 4: for sure.
- 14:17Speaker 5: But you know, at the same time, it's like you
- 14:19Speaker 5: can tell during that entire film that Reynolds and Delowies
- 14:23Speaker 5: are just having the best time of their lives, just
- 14:26Speaker 5: hanging out and having fun. So yeah, all that to say,
- 14:30Speaker 5: I don't think that they had, you know, had any
- 14:34Speaker 5: trouble with chemistry because it was well established before. Who
- 14:39Speaker 5: really I thought as a voice actor was great, but
- 14:44Speaker 5: not right for this film because he wasn't directed. I
- 14:48Speaker 5: don't think he was directed well to make his character
- 14:50Speaker 5: less than terrifying for kids. Is victay Back. Who I'm
- 14:57Speaker 5: a fan of victay Back because I grew up watching
- 14:59Speaker 5: him on all and reruns of Elis and so I
- 15:03Speaker 5: knew him and you know, enjoy him as a character
- 15:08Speaker 5: actor growing up, and then hearing him here, it's it's
- 15:12Speaker 5: like a really like menacing villain, Like he showed up
- 15:16Speaker 5: and it's like nobody, no director sat there with him
- 15:20Speaker 5: and said, okay, vic let's let's turn it down just
- 15:24Speaker 5: a touch here and make it less than horrifying and terrifying.
- 15:29Speaker 5: Let's make it kids scary, not serial killer scary. So
- 15:35Speaker 5: I really feel like Tabac showed up and like brought
- 15:37Speaker 5: his a game and then was betrayed by a lack
- 15:40Speaker 5: of direction.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Speaking of somebody who showed up and even though, like
- 15:47Speaker 2: we really made fun of the King Gator moment. I
- 15:51Speaker 2: felt like the the voice that ken Page gave, oh
- 15:56Speaker 2: is phenomenal, Like the performance he gave was really great.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And also it's so hard. I know that actors don't
- 16:02Speaker 2: necessarily always like this, but as soon as he started singing,
- 16:05Speaker 2: I was just like, oh my.
- 16:06Speaker 3: God, it's ooky boogie same.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I mean, I heard herggy biggie, But I was also thinking,
- 16:12Speaker 4: like old Deuteronomy from Cats, like Ken Page is just
- 16:15Speaker 4: a powerhouse, so when you have him, you're going to
- 16:18Speaker 4: have him sing, Like I get that, and that is
- 16:21Speaker 4: totally fine. It's just there was I think, as watching
- 16:27Speaker 4: it as a kid, the gator part I think scared me.
- 16:30Speaker 4: This one definitely gave me nine fuel in pieces. And
- 16:33Speaker 4: there's small parts I remember, I think the gator something
- 16:37Speaker 4: about it's like giant pink lips and just talking underwater,
- 16:42Speaker 4: like there was a I can't remember the exact phrase,
- 16:45Speaker 4: but there was a moment in that dance number where
- 16:47Speaker 4: I'm like, that's it. That was the part that stuck
- 16:50Speaker 4: in little Darren's brain and gave me thoughts. And there's
- 16:54Speaker 4: other little parts throughout this movie. Yeah, this movie is
- 16:59Speaker 4: chock full of of eighties nightmare fuel for sure.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think that's one thing about it is that this
- 17:09Speaker 2: movie is unhinged in the term of it. It almost
- 17:15Speaker 2: felt to me like this almost wasn't a kid's film,
- 17:19Speaker 2: and I mean that sincerely, where it's almost like, why
- 17:25Speaker 2: didn't you lean into it and make this pg. Thirteen,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you know, like get a different actress to be Anne
- 17:32Speaker 2: Marie and add in a little bit more adult humor
- 17:36Speaker 2: and you probably have a cult classic on your hands. Yeah, probably,
- 17:41Speaker 2: you know, like if you're thinking about you know, like
- 17:43Speaker 2: all all the characters are just horrible people I should
- 17:48Speaker 2: say personalities. It has filled with gangsters and swindlers, and
- 17:55Speaker 2: it's a seedy underbelly. This movie is just so seedy.
- 18:00Speaker 2: That's the word that keeps coming to my brain when
- 18:03Speaker 2: think about this movie is seed you. And so it's
- 18:06Speaker 2: either like either tone it down like crazy, which I
- 18:09Speaker 2: don't think Bluth is capable of doing, or amp it
- 18:13Speaker 2: up and don't make it a kid's movie. It feels
- 18:15Speaker 2: like this weird middle ground, you.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Know, I think it's caught in that same hellish nightmare
- 18:22Speaker 5: middle ground landscape that you're talking about that like cool
- 18:26Speaker 5: world finds itself in where it's like, what is what
- 18:30Speaker 5: is happening?
- 18:31Speaker 4: Right?
- 18:31Speaker 5: Like you can tell that there's the seed of something
- 18:35Speaker 5: that's like kind of interesting there, but it just sort
- 18:39Speaker 5: of falls apart. That happens a lot with Bakshi as well,
- 18:42Speaker 5: where you're like, what is going on here? And in
- 18:45Speaker 5: terms of you talking about like it's a be it
- 18:48Speaker 5: should be a more adult like just go full on
- 18:52Speaker 5: and just make an adult animated feature. Now I'm not
- 18:54Speaker 5: talking about like a dirty animated feature, because I know
- 18:56Speaker 5: when people hear adult like, oh hey, no, I'm not
- 18:59Speaker 5: talk about a blue movie. I'm talking about like, just
- 19:02Speaker 5: make the audience, like the heavy metal audience, the you know,
- 19:05Speaker 5: go full in.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Just those were the two films that I was really
- 19:08Speaker 2: thinking about, was cool old and heavy metal, Like just
- 19:12Speaker 2: use that as your target audience. But then again, you
- 19:15Speaker 2: wouldn't even have a shot in making money.
- 19:17Speaker 3: No, there would be zero.
- 19:19Speaker 5: And that I think that that concept happens today with
- 19:24Speaker 5: the streaming landscape and the thirst for content, you can
- 19:27Speaker 5: get away with releasing something like that. But to your point,
- 19:30Speaker 5: especially movie that's supposed to be like animated counterprogramming to
- 19:35Speaker 5: The Little Mermaid to try to like hit Disney nobody
- 19:38Speaker 5: knew the renaissance.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Nobody knew the renaissance was coming.
- 19:41Speaker 5: They they obviously they released this just like they're like,
- 19:44Speaker 5: oh no, no, no, we got Disney on the ropes.
- 19:46Speaker 3: We can go in.
- 19:48Speaker 5: And I mean, you could probably almost make an argument
- 19:50Speaker 5: that by releasing this against Little Mermaid, it made Little
- 19:52Speaker 5: Mermaid look even better and wound up helping Disney resuscitate
- 19:57Speaker 5: itself because it's like, look, here are two animated products.
- 20:00Speaker 5: This is what Disney's doing, and this is what the
- 20:02Speaker 5: competition is doing. Which do you prefer, you know, sort
- 20:05Speaker 5: of like.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Iron a horde of mouth, Like anyone who would have
- 20:10Speaker 4: seen this would have told like their friends like no,
- 20:13Speaker 4: gho see Little Mermaid, Like, yep, you get one shot
- 20:16Speaker 4: at this and there's no repeat viewings.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, well, well you're talking about.
- 20:21Speaker 4: You if you can see one movie this year.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that whole campaign don't make it.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I just mean word of mouth, because it's
- 20:27Speaker 4: a powerful thing, and it could you know, if this
- 20:29Speaker 4: movie was amazing, even up against Disney, like you know,
- 20:32Speaker 4: you could have some great programming, But you're talking about
- 20:36Speaker 4: the look and again, the maturity, you know, I think
- 20:39Speaker 4: is a is an aspect and there were a lot
- 20:41Speaker 4: of shots in this which really gave me dragons Layer vibes,
- 20:46Speaker 4: which was obviously also done by by Don Bluth the
- 20:49Speaker 4: animated uh, the animated Arcade Cabinet. But there were you
- 20:55Speaker 4: know times when they're like, you know, dangling over precipices
- 20:58Speaker 4: and you know a lot of just again it's his style,
- 21:03Speaker 4: so of course it would have familiarity. But there were yeah,
- 21:06Speaker 4: a lot of parts where I'm like, oh man, I
- 21:08Speaker 4: could see him putting this in the Arcade Cabinet, not
- 21:12Speaker 4: saying make all dogs go to have an into a
- 21:15Speaker 4: game like that, but it just like when we pick
- 21:19Speaker 4: up parallels in Williams music, Like I started to pick
- 21:22Speaker 4: up parallels like that in the types of shots that
- 21:25Speaker 4: were in this.
- 21:26Speaker 3: It was very similar.
- 21:27Speaker 2: It's so much so that the bubbles coming up from
- 21:31Speaker 2: the from the water was reused from Land Before Time in.
- 21:36Speaker 4: The open Yeah, I did. I did notice that. Yeah,
- 21:39Speaker 4: some shots, I'm like, this kind of has or when
- 21:42Speaker 4: they went to Hell and it was like all the
- 21:44Speaker 4: dinosaur stuff in the rocky ground and I'm like, did
- 21:48Speaker 4: they just re draw over shots from Land Before Time?
- 21:52Speaker 4: Because it kind of had a similar vibe but could
- 21:58Speaker 4: be could be.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So okay before we start going harder into the weak points.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Oh lord, so okay.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So the voice acting we thought was stellar. You know, Darren,
- 22:15Speaker 2: you talked about the shot selection. You didn't quite exactly
- 22:17Speaker 2: give it praise, but you talked about how it's very
- 22:20Speaker 2: much in the style of blue film, like this is
- 22:22Speaker 2: this looks like a blue film? John, knowing that this
- 22:27Speaker 2: looks like a blue blue film. What did you think
- 22:30Speaker 2: of the atmosphere of it? Like, did you think it
- 22:33Speaker 2: was consistent? Did you think it was coherent? Give me
- 22:36Speaker 2: like a just give me a vibe check here.
- 22:40Speaker 5: I mean coherence loaded, because I suddenly want to start
- 22:43Speaker 5: making jokes about how incoherent the movie is. But in
- 22:47Speaker 5: terms of atmosphere, no, I think I think the movie
- 22:52Speaker 5: doesn't know what the hell it wants to be in
- 22:54Speaker 5: a sense, I mean it knows.
- 22:56Speaker 3: What even visually.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Even visually you feel like it's all over the map.
- 23:00Speaker 4: No.
- 23:01Speaker 5: No, I called I called it out before because I
- 23:03Speaker 5: think that the way they animate Anne Marie the whole
- 23:07Speaker 5: time I'm sitting there, like it felt like that character
- 23:10Speaker 5: was animated for a different a different studio like Disney,
- 23:14Speaker 5: and then like matted into this like it was jarring
- 23:18Speaker 5: how different Anne Marie felt visually from the rest of
- 23:22Speaker 5: the film. And I also thought that there were there
- 23:28Speaker 5: were differences between, you know, in execution, between the heaven
- 23:34Speaker 5: part and the world part and the underwater part. You
- 23:38Speaker 5: could feel the sense of different teams working on things,
- 23:42Speaker 5: you know, I mean, is it all competently done, Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 5: of course, but is it is it coherent?
- 23:51Speaker 3: No? No, I don't think so.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Deren was there anything that else that popped out to
- 23:56Speaker 2: you where you're just like, yeah, this movie gets this right,
- 24:00Speaker 2: not just the voice acting, but it is like it
- 24:03Speaker 2: really nails something.
- 24:08Speaker 4: I mean, it's the most accurate depiction of dog Heaven
- 24:11Speaker 4: that I've ever seen. So, I mean, did you see
- 24:15Speaker 4: the Mickey mouse watch in the as they're panting by,
- 24:19Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, why is that there? But yeah, no,
- 24:22Speaker 4: it's again.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I think.
- 24:25Speaker 4: What you guys said about it feeling like it pulled
- 24:28Speaker 4: from a whole bunch of different things. I mean the
- 24:31Speaker 4: fact that when they because I watched the credits, you know,
- 24:35Speaker 4: partly to listen to the to the song, but also
- 24:40Speaker 4: when it said story by and listed ten people, I
- 24:45Speaker 4: was like, yeah, yeah, that feels very true.
- 24:52Speaker 3: But but I.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Will say like, yeah again, you know the heaven parts
- 24:56Speaker 4: like I got major you know, mister, mister Toad's wild
- 25:00Speaker 4: dry mister, you know, winding the willows, like just all
- 25:04Speaker 4: sorts of little things that had come before trickled into
- 25:08Speaker 4: this and not in a they took the best and
- 25:11Speaker 4: knitted it together in a coherent story, but in it
- 25:15Speaker 4: just again, like we said about the alligator, It's like,
- 25:19Speaker 4: why is this like the it feels like that's in
- 25:22Speaker 4: there because they edited themselves into a corner and had
- 25:25Speaker 4: to keep it because of the climatic scene. Otherwise, why
- 25:31Speaker 4: why is that? What story are we learning? I'm still
- 25:35Speaker 4: amazed that Charlie at the end was like, oh, we
- 25:37Speaker 4: gotta rebuild again and make a new casino. And I'm like,
- 25:40Speaker 4: why why is that even the first plot of why
- 25:44Speaker 4: are we in Louisiana? That also surprised me. I'm like,
- 25:48Speaker 4: and in the twenties, sure, and there's a ray gun?
- 25:53Speaker 3: Why not?
- 25:54Speaker 4: You know?
- 25:55Speaker 2: The raygun pushed me over. The end was like when
- 26:00Speaker 2: he because I I've forgotten so much. I saw this
- 26:03Speaker 2: as a kid, but I've forgotten so much of it.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And when his stooge said, I have a ray gun, blah,
- 26:09Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah. He says, you got a rag gun.
- 26:13Speaker 2: I was thinking, like, is it a collectible collectible that
- 26:17Speaker 2: they're gonna pawn or something like is it like a
- 26:20Speaker 2: movie prop? And then all of a sudden, like a
- 26:22Speaker 2: few scenes later, Charlie is shot with a freakin' ray gun.
- 26:28Speaker 5: I thought, yeah, it was going to be something where
- 26:31Speaker 5: you were going to find out that that character was
- 26:33Speaker 5: an idiot because it wasn't a real gun.
- 26:36Speaker 3: He's a dog. He did a potato gun.
- 26:39Speaker 4: And it's like, you know, magical but yeah, no.
- 26:42Speaker 5: No, but like it's it's literally at that, yeah, off
- 26:45Speaker 5: the rails, Like this movie only only could have made
- 26:51Speaker 5: sense if suddenly, uh, Charlie as a human being wakes
- 26:56Speaker 5: up in a Jacob's Ladder like experience at the end
- 27:00Speaker 5: of the movie, not even animated. It's actually a live
- 27:04Speaker 5: person played by Burt Reynolds sitting up in a bit
- 27:07Speaker 5: for that and he's like, oh, I've been shot, And
- 27:10Speaker 5: Dom DeLuise is sitting at his bedside and he's like, no, no, no,
- 27:13Speaker 5: this is what happened.
- 27:14Speaker 3: You owed some money blah blah blah blah blah. You
- 27:17Speaker 3: are you okay? And he lays back. He's like, what
- 27:20Speaker 3: did they give me his medication?
- 27:23Speaker 2: And Patrick Duffy is in his hospital bed next to him.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yes, exactly right. That's the only way this movie makes
- 27:29Speaker 3: any sense.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Well, and even and again in the end, like you know,
- 27:34Speaker 4: like he had the dream about going to hell, but
- 27:37Speaker 4: then in the end when he kind of comes back,
- 27:39Speaker 4: it's fairly clear by the giant you know, devil dog
- 27:44Speaker 4: and the red lighting that he didn't come back from
- 27:47Speaker 4: heaven to say goodbye to little you know, And.
- 27:51Speaker 3: I'm like, what what is going on? What is happening?
- 27:56Speaker 4: And then again with a with a magic wave, the
- 27:59Speaker 4: angel dog like, ah, okay, okay, we gotta have a
- 28:03Speaker 4: happy ending. You're back, You're back. And I'm like, I
- 28:05Speaker 4: know we said no and we had steaks, but those
- 28:08Speaker 4: steaks don't matter. We're good.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Yeah, So okay.
- 28:12Speaker 2: So so, Darren, you talked about how this had like
- 28:15Speaker 2: ten writers on it or ten people who were contributed
- 28:18Speaker 2: to the story. The original concept for the movie was
- 28:22Speaker 2: called Canine Mysteries, or it might have been called Canine Detective,
- 28:26Speaker 2: and it was a Burt Reynolds spoof film where he's
- 28:31Speaker 2: a detective dog living in a junk yard trying to
- 28:34Speaker 2: rescue a female dog from a nasty rich Texan and
- 28:37Speaker 2: his goons, and it was, Yeah, it was, it was
- 28:41Speaker 2: gonna be. They wanted Burt Reynolds to voice Charlie or
- 28:45Speaker 2: this whatever this detective's dog name was gonna be because
- 28:48Speaker 2: it was gonna be a spoof on reynolds older movies.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I would have watched the hell out of that movie.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And I'm super sad that that that didn't make it, John, like,
- 28:58Speaker 2: being a Reynolds fan, like, would that have made sense?
- 29:01Speaker 2: Would have been two on the Nose? Would have been
- 29:04Speaker 2: better than this?
- 29:05Speaker 3: What do you think it would have been better than this?
- 29:07Speaker 5: And even though it would have, like let's say we're
- 29:09Speaker 5: watching it now in twenty twenty four, it becomes a
- 29:12Speaker 5: time capsule movie, but it becomes a fun time capsule
- 29:15Speaker 5: movie because you get what's anchoring it and it has
- 29:19Speaker 5: a point. So yeah, that would have been better, Darren,
- 29:23Speaker 5: what do you think?
- 29:25Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 29:25Speaker 4: It? I mean, yeah, I read that too about the
- 29:28Speaker 4: anthology movie. I was just I had totally forgotten that
- 29:33Speaker 4: there was a sequel and a TV show of this
- 29:35Speaker 4: All Dogs, Good Heaven two and the series. But that's
- 29:39Speaker 4: neither here nor there for this yeah. It again. There's
- 29:44Speaker 4: certain things you know, when you read from interviews that
- 29:48Speaker 4: kind of stick with you and you're like, hmm, that
- 29:52Speaker 4: that says something. And for me, it was when Don
- 29:57Speaker 4: Bluth had said, yeah, like I really like that title,
- 30:00Speaker 4: Like everything was built around that, and they tried to
- 30:03Speaker 4: get me to change it, but I wouldn't change it.
- 30:05Speaker 4: I'm like when your friends tell you the title isn't
- 30:10Speaker 4: working and this is the title you've built the entire
- 30:13Speaker 4: movie off of, and they say you should change it,
- 30:17Speaker 4: and you say no, and you're glad that you kick
- 30:20Speaker 4: Steven Spielberg to the curb and don't have to listen
- 30:23Speaker 4: to his silly Oscar winning comments. I'm sorry, I can't
- 30:29Speaker 4: help you. I can't help you, DoD I can't. I
- 30:32Speaker 4: can't help you. So yeah, little things like that where
- 30:35Speaker 4: it's like, again, make your own movie, get your own
- 30:41Speaker 4: you did, you got your own studio. This is when
- 30:43Speaker 4: they moved to Ireland. They set up a whole new
- 30:46Speaker 4: studio like great, and they put their best foot forward
- 30:50Speaker 4: and it just was not the coherent when they needed
- 30:57Speaker 4: And I think I don't think it would be until
- 30:59Speaker 4: Anastasia that they did really well. Like actually, I think
- 31:03Speaker 4: it said was their number one performing.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Ever, I'm surprised they made it that far.
- 31:08Speaker 4: I am kind of surprised too.
- 31:11Speaker 5: I think what keeps Bluth in the conversation is people
- 31:14Speaker 5: are Disney becomes the champ, and you know what the
- 31:18Speaker 5: renaissance goes on. So, yeah, people are going to keep
- 31:22Speaker 5: going after somebody like Bluth because they're going to keep
- 31:24Speaker 5: taking shots at the champ. When you're the champ, the
- 31:27Speaker 5: contender is always coming at you, and so who are
- 31:31Speaker 5: you going to turn to? You got to turn something,
- 31:34Speaker 5: You have to get something out there as competition to
- 31:37Speaker 5: try to be in the conversation makes perfect sense for
- 31:41Speaker 5: Blue to sit there. And I think Thumblelina is ninety four,
- 31:45Speaker 5: Is that the next thing that?
- 31:46Speaker 4: No, No, it's it's even worse because yeah, we're after this,
- 31:50Speaker 4: we're jumping to titan Ae in two thousand. But between
- 31:53Speaker 4: All Dogs Go to Heaven and titan Ae, there's Rocketdoodle.
- 31:58Speaker 4: You want to talk about Nail in the Coffin movies
- 32:01Speaker 4: in ninety one, Thumberlina, a troll in Central Park, the
- 32:05Speaker 4: Pebble and the Penguin. Then Anastasia in ninety seven. That
- 32:10Speaker 4: was the Hail Mary like there's yeah, and then tiny
- 32:16Speaker 4: was the tiny was now you're firmly in everyone is
- 32:20Speaker 4: using CG in two thousand and so that was his
- 32:23Speaker 4: kind of like it incorporate CG in mixed waves, which
- 32:26Speaker 4: I think it does very well, but it was kind
- 32:29Speaker 4: of the we're gonna stick to our guns with Judy animation.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Uh and it. Yeah, it did not do particularly well.
- 32:38Speaker 4: But yeah, there's a lot of movies after All Dogs
- 32:42Speaker 4: between this and Anastasia, much more than I would think
- 32:45Speaker 4: he could have gotten away with.
- 32:47Speaker 3: But but he did. Yeah.
- 32:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I think just studios are desperate to try to
- 32:53Speaker 5: keep taking shots at Disney and they'll just do whatever.
- 32:57Speaker 2: So all right, So All Dogs Go to Heaven had
- 33:01Speaker 2: a budget of thirteen million.
- 33:02Speaker 3: That is not much.
- 33:04Speaker 2: That's like for nineteen eighty nine, and for an ambitious
- 33:08Speaker 2: animated project, that's not that much. It barely barely doubled
- 33:13Speaker 2: itch budget. So they eked by with a profit. And
- 33:19Speaker 2: we're just talking about like crawl like everybody got grocery
- 33:23Speaker 2: money and then maybe a little extra beer money on
- 33:28Speaker 2: All Dogs Go to Heaven and the Mouse spent forty million,
- 33:35Speaker 2: so more than double the budget of All those Good
- 33:39Speaker 2: Heaven went into the Little Mermaid, But they made two
- 33:42Speaker 2: hundred and thirty five million in nineteen eighty nine. That
- 33:47Speaker 2: has the buying power of almost six hundred million today.
- 33:55Speaker 2: It's just you cannot compete. And Okay, so I know
- 33:59Speaker 2: the answer this question. I know, I know they answer
- 34:03Speaker 2: this question, but I feel like I have to ask it.
- 34:06Speaker 2: We're talking about this movie because we're done, we're in
- 34:09Speaker 2: the House of Bluth. Would this movie, like, say, say,
- 34:13Speaker 2: Little Mermaid didn't come out.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, like they were doing every other year, you know,
- 34:19Speaker 4: because they're trying to still gain up speed and this
- 34:22Speaker 4: is the year for Dawn.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Yeah, what like Mermaid was next year? Yeah, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 2: came out in nineteen ninety. We're in an alternate universe.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Would more people talk about this movie if it wasn't
- 34:36Speaker 2: if it didn't get blasted out of the sky or
- 34:39Speaker 2: is there just nothing there to talk about?
- 34:42Speaker 5: Honestly, I think that maybe a few more people see it,
- 34:45Speaker 5: but that just I think means a few more people
- 34:48Speaker 5: dislike it. I word of mouth kills a movie, and
- 34:53Speaker 5: I think word of mouth killed this and would have
- 34:57Speaker 5: killed it anyway. Maybe it ekes out and Cross is
- 35:00Speaker 5: like the thirty million mark. But I don't think that
- 35:02Speaker 5: there's enough word of mouth to carry this.
- 35:05Speaker 4: No, yeah, I agree. I don't think something like Secret
- 35:12Speaker 4: of Nim. I think if Secret of Nim or something
- 35:15Speaker 4: was dropping with the coherence of story and kind of
- 35:18Speaker 4: what it was trying to do and push in animation,
- 35:22Speaker 4: I think it would have a much firmer shake. But
- 35:26Speaker 4: I just at the end of the day, is it
- 35:29Speaker 4: a story that you want to see and it's not.
- 35:35Speaker 2: I think that that's a solid way to put it, Darren,
- 35:38Speaker 2: Because I was talking with my wife, you know, I
- 35:41Speaker 2: was just like, Okay, well I'm gonna I'm gonna go
- 35:42Speaker 2: downstairs and talk about all else to go to heaven now.
- 35:45Speaker 2: And she's like, is that something that the kids would
- 35:49Speaker 2: want to watch? And I was like, no, not even.
- 35:51Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 35:52Speaker 2: And they're like, she said, because it's too scary. I
- 35:54Speaker 2: was like, not even because it's too scary. I mean
- 35:57Speaker 2: it is. It's too stressful. Again, it's a Don Bluth picture.
- 36:01Speaker 2: It's too stressful for modern day children. It's too scary.
- 36:04Speaker 2: The dog goeses the literal hell. But at the same time,
- 36:07Speaker 2: there's no reason to watch it. There's no reason for
- 36:11Speaker 2: me to show this to my kids. I mean, you know,
- 36:15Speaker 2: back when this came out, what we had like four
- 36:17Speaker 2: channels on TV, so if it was on, you probably
- 36:20Speaker 2: would watch it because it was on. We have almost
- 36:25Speaker 2: limitless options of what we can watch and what we
- 36:28Speaker 2: can show our kids in twenty twenty four, the year
- 36:31Speaker 2: of our Lord. But yeah, so I think I don't
- 36:35Speaker 2: want to talk about this anymore. Where would you put
- 36:37Speaker 2: Lance Reddick because I know where I would put them.
- 36:42Speaker 2: In fact, I'm gonna go I'm gonna go first. I'm
- 36:44Speaker 2: gonna go first. It go first, we'll give we'll give
- 36:47Speaker 2: our lance Redic pick, and then we'll give our final ratings.
- 36:50Speaker 2: I honestly think, as much as I love and this
- 36:55Speaker 2: is if this is your first time listening, we just
- 36:57Speaker 2: let all three of us just love lance Reddicks so
- 36:59Speaker 2: much that we can up with this game of where
- 37:01Speaker 2: we would put Lance Reddick in the movie. And even
- 37:04Speaker 2: though I love Bert Reynolds's performance, I think Reddick would
- 37:09Speaker 2: have made a fantastic Charlie in this. I think he
- 37:11Speaker 2: would have made a superb, superb lead. And that that's
- 37:14Speaker 2: where I'm putting him. Fair, fair, I'll go, I'll go
- 37:18Speaker 2: ahead and go next.
- 37:19Speaker 5: I will say that I would replace Vic tayback and
- 37:23Speaker 5: make him carface Corruthers.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Oh oh, that's a good one, because that's because that's.
- 37:28Speaker 2: A performance that could need replacing. Yeah, that's a solid answer,
- 37:35Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 37:37Speaker 3: For me.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Oh gosh, what was his name? I'm going to have
- 37:41Speaker 4: him be the sidekick dog, not itchy, the bad sidekick dog.
- 37:47Speaker 3: What was it?
- 37:48Speaker 4: He had like a frocious name, but he wasn't a
- 37:51Speaker 4: ferocious person.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Oh was that this killer? Yeah? Chilling Charles Nelson Riley's character.
- 37:59Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, as have him be killed Darius the same
- 38:02Speaker 4: fidgety dog.
- 38:04Speaker 5: The design of that character changes then because that that
- 38:07Speaker 5: dog looks like Charles Nelson Riley.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Well that's true, but yeah, no, I would like to see,
- 38:15Speaker 4: you know that that kind of sniveling sidekick role for him.
- 38:20Speaker 3: That's fair interesting, that's fair all right.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Since I'm leading this week and his tradition, Oh geez,
- 38:30Speaker 2: I'm making Darren go first with his star rating. I
- 38:33Speaker 2: cannot wait to figure out what what we all give this.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Yeah, oh it's a one. It's a one for for sure.
- 38:41Speaker 4: My only reason I didn't write it ahead of time
- 38:43Speaker 4: in our form is because I thought maybe there's been
- 38:48Speaker 4: times where we've all talked about a movie and and
- 38:51Speaker 4: after talking about it, we're like, Okay, there's a little
- 38:54Speaker 4: bit there. I think we all agree with the voice
- 38:58Speaker 4: performances are the best part overall for sure. But you know,
- 39:05Speaker 4: I think we've kind of said all of our piece.
- 39:08Speaker 4: The only thing that I kind of in the last
- 39:11Speaker 4: bit of what we were talking about about stories that
- 39:15Speaker 4: we want to see, even being darker. It made me
- 39:18Speaker 4: think of like some of Tim Burton's work, Like Tim
- 39:21Speaker 4: Burton is also a director where you know, if you're
- 39:25Speaker 4: gonna watch Franken Weeny or you know, Corpse Bride, like
- 39:30Speaker 4: you're going to get not a Disney picture, you're not getting,
- 39:36Speaker 4: you know, snow white and singing and dwarves, and it's
- 39:39Speaker 4: a different vibe. But it's also he's really good at tell,
- 39:45Speaker 4: like you can tell he believes in those stories. Other
- 39:48Speaker 4: people it may not be their favorite, but he has
- 39:51Speaker 4: found his group. I will say that kind of feels
- 39:55Speaker 4: like the big difference than with Don Bluth is, Yeah,
- 39:58Speaker 4: I'm sure there's people who love dun Booth. I'm sure
- 40:01Speaker 4: there's always that fan club, But on a mass market level,
- 40:07Speaker 4: these stories that they're running with, and I get it,
- 40:09Speaker 4: it's hard because you know, it's animation and this is
- 40:12Speaker 4: like half a decade of pop to turn these out,
- 40:16Speaker 4: like you're not pivoting on a dime, like if it's
- 40:20Speaker 4: you know, and we've talked about many points in this
- 40:22Speaker 4: story where you could tell they got caught and they
- 40:25Speaker 4: had to keep it in or just for patting because
- 40:28Speaker 4: the movies are so short, like I would have taken
- 40:31Speaker 4: out the Gator sing a dance number. But now we're like,
- 40:35Speaker 4: you know, we're drifting towards an hour. You can't have
- 40:38Speaker 4: an hour as your animated movie in a theatrical release,
- 40:42Speaker 4: like people wouldn't take it seriously. So all that to say, yeah,
- 40:47Speaker 4: I think at the end of the day, I'm still
- 40:51Speaker 4: excited to talk about titany A. Next Year is one
- 40:53Speaker 4: of my ones that I enjoy. I'm not going to
- 40:57Speaker 4: guarantee it's a good movie over it's better better than this,
- 41:01Speaker 4: for sure, But I do feel that Don put his
- 41:06Speaker 4: full chips in and and and really went with what
- 41:11Speaker 4: he loved in a way that I don't think we've
- 41:14Speaker 4: seen for a couple of chapters. So yeah, all that
- 41:17Speaker 4: to say, we're one pocket watch rating for all Dogs
- 41:22Speaker 4: Go to Heaven and if if you watch this movie
- 41:25Speaker 4: as a kid and didn't immediately go out and hug
- 41:27Speaker 4: your dog and like say, I never want you to die. Like,
- 41:29Speaker 4: oh man, so much time in your fuel?
- 41:33Speaker 2: John, what's your answer?
- 41:36Speaker 5: Having a tough time because I don't want to give
- 41:39Speaker 5: it a zero because I think that's just mean, and
- 41:42Speaker 5: I don't think I've ever given it a zero.
- 41:44Speaker 4: I almost wanted to give it a zero. Can we
- 41:46Speaker 4: give zeros?
- 41:47Speaker 5: Like I'm gonna follow I'm gonna follow Tristan's lead, though,
- 41:51Speaker 5: and I'm going to say that the cast is trying.
- 41:55Speaker 5: I can't give it a zero after that voice cast, Well,
- 41:58Speaker 5: you also can't give half stars, and I've been trying. Actually,
- 42:01Speaker 5: I was talking with somebody at work. I was like,
- 42:02Speaker 5: you know, my friend Darren, he doesn't give half stars
- 42:04Speaker 5: because it is kind of cheating, and you know I
- 42:07Speaker 5: get that. But this time, because I don't want to
- 42:09Speaker 5: give it a zero, I'm going to give it a
- 42:11Speaker 5: zero point five because for my usual joke reason that
- 42:16Speaker 5: I am unaware of anybody dying accidentally tied to this film,
- 42:20Speaker 5: which would be very difficult for an animated feature. So
- 42:23Speaker 5: it's a zero point five for me.
- 42:25Speaker 2: The last zero point five that was given on this
- 42:27Speaker 2: podcast was by me.
- 42:29Speaker 3: With Moon forty four, that's correct, yep, but.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Four feels like a glorious plot compared to All Talks
- 42:43Speaker 4: Go to Heaven.
- 42:45Speaker 3: I want to go.
- 42:46Speaker 2: I'm going to give this a one point five.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Mainly, well, Kristan, be calm with your generosity, my friend. Wow.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Mainly because the last film that I gave one was
- 43:00Speaker 2: Mad Max and All Dogs Go to Heaven didn't piss
- 43:05Speaker 2: me off as much as Mad Max, and so I like,
- 43:09Speaker 2: that's my gold standard, Like that's my one star movie
- 43:13Speaker 2: standard is Mad Max because it just made me freakishly angry.
- 43:19Speaker 2: And with Moon forty four, you're just like, how on
- 43:22Speaker 2: earth did this get made? This is not a film,
- 43:24Speaker 2: and that's why I got less than a one.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Mood forty four was almost a bad it's good, like
- 43:29Speaker 4: there's a bit of that in it.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Like, no, I'm gonna be team drifting on this.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Strong disagreement, strong disagreement on that one. And so yeah,
- 43:44Speaker 2: I think I gave Cobra a one and a half
- 43:46Speaker 2: and I was like that that feels about right, that
- 43:48Speaker 2: that feels I feel. This feels like in the lane
- 43:51Speaker 2: of how I view Cobra.
- 43:54Speaker 5: See and I'll tell you why I go with a
- 43:55Speaker 5: zero point five is because even a one, to Darren's
- 43:59Speaker 5: point about like oh so bad, it's good there. I
- 44:00Speaker 5: could see something where like I get drunk enough one night, I'm.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Like, ah, screwing, I'll watch Mood forty four again. Do
- 44:07Speaker 3: I hate it as much as? Yes? I hate watch?
- 44:09Speaker 3: Like what is like the hate Watch?
- 44:12Speaker 4: I knew we were friends.
- 44:13Speaker 3: It's like hate Watch territory. Yeah, man, not a chance.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I will.
- 44:18Speaker 5: I will pull out a fingernail before I watch All
- 44:20Speaker 5: Dogs Go to Heaven again because it would be more pleasant.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Wow, that's intense.
- 44:25Speaker 5: Yes, it okay, it's hyperbole. I'm overstating the point.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I wouldn't.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Actually, there's no risk of self harm from any of
- 44:33Speaker 5: the hosts on this show.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Anybody. It's okay, it's okay, all.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Right, Well, there you go, folks. That was their episode. Uh,
- 44:41Speaker 2: this was Oh my gosh, I hope you enjoyed listening
- 44:44Speaker 2: to us trash on All Dogs Go. It really felt
- 44:48Speaker 2: like punching down. And that was another thing that was weird,
- 44:51Speaker 2: like sometimes they walked on all fours and sometimes they
- 44:54Speaker 2: walked on two legs. And then there was a literal
- 44:56Speaker 2: boxing match between Charlie and the bad guy, and it
- 45:00Speaker 2: was awkward. They could use thumbs, but then they couldn't. Whatever,
- 45:04Speaker 2: I don't care anymore. What are we talking about next week?
- 45:07Speaker 4: Why do you keep talking about All dogs go to
- 45:09Speaker 4: Heaven twisted? You're free, you're done. You don't have to
- 45:11Speaker 4: talk about it anymore.
- 45:13Speaker 3: It's over.
- 45:14Speaker 4: It's over. We are going to jump eleven years to
- 45:18Speaker 4: two thousand's titan Ae as we wrap up the House
- 45:22Speaker 4: of blup here on house Lights.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Join the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
