- 0:16what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:19The sermon you're about to listen to comes from our Spring
- 0:21Mixtape 2025 Non Series Sermon Series.
- 0:26Rather than a series, this will be a collection of sermons based
- 0:28on what God is leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:31You can find more information about our church at

- 0:42Good morning everybody. This morning scriptures reading
- 0:47comes from First Corinthians chapter 3.
- 0:53For when one says I follow Paul and another I will follow
- 0:58Apollo's. Are you not mere human beings?
- 1:02What after all is Apollo's and what is Paul?
- 1:07Only servants through whom you can came to believe as the Word
- 1:12has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed Apollo's
- 1:17Watergate, but God has been making it grow.
- 1:21So neither. So neither the one who plants
- 1:25nor the one who waters is anything but.
- 1:28Only God who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one
- 1:34who waters have one purpose and they will each be rewarded
- 1:40according to their own labor. For we are Co workers and God's
- 1:44service and you are God. You are God's bill and God's
- 1:48building. By the grace God has given me.
- 1:53I lay the foundation as a wide builder and someone else is
- 1:58building on it. But each one should build the
- 2:01care for. For no one can lay any
- 2:05foundation other than one already laid, which is Jesus
- 2:08Christ. This is the word of God for the
- 2:11people of God. Last time I had the opportunity
- 2:19to preach I had was talking about my love for a well thought
- 2:25out mission and our part in God's overarching mission
- 2:30throughout history. But we do not act by ourselves
- 2:36as the church. We are on mission together and
- 2:40who you partner with in mission is vital to the mission itself.
- 2:46And so this is as big as partnering with the global
- 2:50church, with the denomination that you line up with, the
- 2:54individual church that you attend, or even congregations
- 2:59that you partner with, like our beautiful relationship with the
- 3:03Lamb of God, House of Restoration, but also the
- 3:06individuals within the body, even ones that don't attend our
- 3:10church. I was very much blessed this
- 3:13past when was the concert Joanna Wednesday Thursday where a local
- 3:21sister in Christ used her platform and her senior solo to
- 3:25share scripture and sing about everyone being welcome at the
- 3:30Lord's table. And so it's beautiful to see
- 3:33those that we are in mission with doing the work of God.
- 3:37And when I think particularly in preparation of this, my brother
- 3:44Damian down in La Palmia immediately came to mind.
- 3:50He not only has helped host families as we take down mission
- 3:55trips for almost the past 15 years, but he's also one of the
- 3:58main voices and my eyes and ears on the ground for the sponsored
- 4:03children's project. So he makes sure that we are
- 4:06able to get all the school supplies to the kids that
- 4:08receive sponsorship. And I could not do the mission
- 4:14without him. And so he's been such an
- 4:15encouragement to myself. And what a blessing to have a
- 4:20brother in Christ to help us do our part in God's mission.
- 4:25But today we're going to look specifically at the beloved Paul
- 4:30and who partnered with him in ministry.
- 4:33But first, let us pray. Lord, I thank you by Your grace
- 4:41to be here this morning and ask that in this time I would be put
- 4:46aside and that Your Spirit would lead us.
- 4:49That Your Spirit would speak not only through me, but directly to
- 4:53the hearts of those here. That we would be transformed by
- 4:56Your Spirit more into your image and be given the boldness and
- 5:02courage like those examples of the faith to move forward,
- 5:07uniting to fulfill your mission in this world.
- 5:12Lord, we love you and we praise you in Jesus name.
- 5:16Amen. Little mental exercise to start
- 5:23us off and maybe wake us up is I want you to think of a book of
- 5:28the Bible and I'm going to narrow it down.
- 5:31A book of the Bible in the New Testament.
- 5:34That is not a gospel. Oh, you're distracted by the map
- 5:38now? It's OK.
- 5:41So think of a book of the Bible and the New Testament that is
- 5:44not a gospel. I can almost guarantee you that
- 5:48that book was written by Paul, and if you want to come up
- 5:51afterwards, I can verify which ones you were thinking of.
- 5:54But odds are in my favour because Paul wrote was the
- 5:59single author to write the most books in the New Testament.
- 6:04And as we see on the map, this is a map of his various, what
- 6:09they call his missionary journeys all over the place.
- 6:12And this is before the Euro rail existed.
- 6:16So he used boats, he walked horses, donkeys, all of the
- 6:20above to get from place to place with a mission to share the
- 6:24gospel to as many people as he could and the time that God gave
- 6:29him on earth. There's a reason why thousands
- 6:33of churches all over the world are named after Saint Paul
- 6:37because of how instrumental he is in the early church and in
- 6:42providing a lot of God's word to us as Christians.
- 6:47And so we are forever indebted to Paul for what he did as he
- 6:51was being faithful to what God called him to do.
- 6:56But today I I wanted us to look specifically at his second 2nd
- 7:01missionary journey because from the get go there is conflict and
- 7:06there is a deciding moment where he has to choose who he is going
- 7:12to go with on his second missionary journey.
- 7:17And his friend Barnabas wanted to bring along John Mark.
- 7:21And for those that don't know, on the first journey John Mark
- 7:25abandoned them part way through. And so Paul viewed John Mark as
- 7:30being unreliable for this second journey.
- 7:34And so after back and forth Paul decides to go forward with Silas
- 7:39on this journey. And the first time they went out
- 7:41on a missionary journey, it was a direct calling from God.
- 7:45And in the second time it was the general calling of sharing
- 7:51the gospel. And so they go out.
- 7:54And I'm sure that Paul was annoyed that every time they
- 7:57started to approach a place, the Spirit guided them away from
- 8:01sharing the gospel at that place.
- 8:03And so he's travelling and travelling, getting rerouted,
- 8:06travelling and travelling and getting rerouted.
- 8:08And instead of getting completely deterred, God sends
- 8:13provides a vision of a man in Macedonia calling him to share
- 8:18the gospel in Macedonia. And so Paul's faithful gets on a
- 8:22boat and lands in Philippi in Macedonia.
- 8:25There he meets later famous woman of the faith, Lydia.
- 8:32And upon hearing the gospel, she comes to faith and is very
- 8:37instrumental to the Kingdom building in that area.
- 8:42Shortly after, Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into
- 8:46jail. I don't know.
- 8:49Well, I only know of one that's been to jail fairly often in
- 8:52this congregation. But I don't believe he was
- 8:54beaten to get there. And in these kind of
- 8:58circumstances, it's very easy to lose hope, to lose faith.
- 9:02And yet Paul and Silas continue to praise God even in their jail
- 9:07cell and continue to pray out to him.
- 9:09And God is faithful to his faithful, and he sets them free.
- 9:13He sends an earthquake. They are broken free of their
- 9:17shackles and able to leave. And as they are heading out of
- 9:20the jail, one of the prison guards is about to commit
- 9:24suicide because he knows that it was his responsibility to keep
- 9:28them captive. And by failing at that
- 9:31responsibility, he was going to be put to death.
- 9:34Paul stops him, shares the gospel with him, goes with him
- 9:38to his home and shares the gospel with the prison guards
- 9:42family. And they come to faith in that
- 9:45household. Now, if Scott or I were to
- 9:48experience something like this, I'm sure we would then request a
- 9:52sabbatical because we had been through a lot, right?
- 9:56And yet Paul perseveres through and courageously continues on
- 10:02this mission journey. He continues to Thessalonica,
- 10:06Berea, Athens, and that's where we meet a scripture I'd like to
- 10:11share. But before we pull that up, Tim,
- 10:13before we do that, I'm curious. Show of hands, of literal hands.
- 10:19Who here before this sermon has heard of Paul and feels like you
- 10:23fairly have an idea of who Paul is?
- 10:26All right, OK, we've got good hands.
- 10:27Leave them up. Leave them up.
- 10:28OK, now leave your hands up if you feel like you're familiar
- 10:33with Priscilla and Aquila. OK, A little less famous, right?
- 10:37OK, so you can put your hands down.
- 10:39You're welcome. That's our stretch for the
- 10:40morning as we see Paul leaving Athens and going into Corinth.
- 10:47That's where we meet him in Acts chapter 18 this morning.
- 10:51And in verse one it says this. After this, Paul left Athens and
- 10:56went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila,
- 11:00a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with
- 11:03his wife Priscilla. Because Claudius had ordered all
- 11:07Jews to leave Rome, Paul went to see them.
- 11:10And because he was a tent maker, as they were, he stayed and
- 11:15worked with them. And so we have these two that we
- 11:20can gather a little bit at least specifically about Aquila, that
- 11:25he was a Jew originally from Pontus, but then at this time
- 11:29came from Italy with his wife because all the Jews were kicked
- 11:34out of Rome. Now, historians don't fully
- 11:37agree that every single Jew in Rome was kicked out because of
- 11:41the logistical nightmare of this, but especially the leaders
- 11:44in the Jewish community being exiled from Rome.
- 11:47So we can presume that Aquila and Priscilla were viewed as
- 11:52leaders in the Jewish community in Rome before they were exiled.
- 11:57And we also learned that Aquila was a tent maker, right?
- 12:01A Craftsman, just like Paul. And Paul hung out and worked
- 12:05with them building tents. But imagine, you know, when we
- 12:09think of the American dream, a lot of times it's people
- 12:12starting a business and growing that business and their success
- 12:15based off of that. But imagine having to move your
- 12:19location and restarting that business multiple times, right?
- 12:23So every time they're moving, you're building new clientele,
- 12:26you're building a reputation for your work everywhere you go.
- 12:31And so they are faithfully doing this everywhere they end up.
- 12:35As we move on into later in the same chapter, we see a familiar
- 12:42name that we read read about in our main scripture about how
- 12:46people were following Apollos and Paul and consider themselves
- 12:50followers of them specifically. And we see later in chapter 18
- 12:54it says, meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria,
- 12:59came to Ephesus. He was a learned man with a
- 13:03thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.
- 13:05He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke
- 13:08with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately.
- 13:11Though he knew only the baptism of John.
- 13:14He began to speak boldly in the synagogue.
- 13:18When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their
- 13:22home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
- 13:27We have a leader of the faith at this point growing in his
- 13:32notoriety for being a leader in the faith.
- 13:35And yet Priscilla and Aquila are there to not only get to know
- 13:41him, but they invite him into their house and they
- 13:44relationally disciple him. It says that they explain to him
- 13:48the way of God more accurately. But do you think that when he
- 13:51came over and they invited him, they said, this is what you
- 13:54don't understand. Explain it out and say, OK, good
- 13:58luck on your voyage. No, right.
- 14:01You sit down, you break that bread, you grow in a
- 14:03relationship, and through the same foundation of faith you're
- 14:08able to grow in truth and grace. And then later on we learned
- 14:14something very important about Priscilla and Aquila.
- 14:18In First Corinthians, we see it says the churches in the
- 14:22province of Asia send you greetings.
- 14:25Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does
- 14:29the church that meets at their house.
- 14:33And so we now see they not only invite individuals into their
- 14:38home, but they use their home as a home base for ministry.
- 14:43It's not just limited outwardly or Paul's gatherings or when
- 14:48Paul or Apollo's comes and preaches to the masses, but they
- 14:52are continuing this growth of the church within their own
- 14:55home. And you know, for only being
- 14:59mentioned, I believe, six times in Scripture, Paul seems to have
- 15:06such a high regard for this couple, even though we hear
- 15:10about Paul all throughout Acts, right?
- 15:12And then we have all of his letters that we love to read.
- 15:16And so it's easy to more focus on Paul.
- 15:18But who does Paul look to within the faith?
- 15:22And so we see in Romans 16, starting in verse three, he says
- 15:26this greet Priscilla and Aquila, my Co workers in Christ Jesus.
- 15:34They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches
- 15:38of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
- 15:43That's a pretty big deal. The I joked with the first
- 15:48service that if you're going to send me the seminarian, I'm
- 15:52going to have to learn some Greek words that I'll have to
- 15:54get my money's worth. And therefore I will impart on
- 15:57you that the Greek word for that is replaced with Co workers in
- 16:01English is actually the same route that we use for the word
- 16:04synergy. So he sees the synergistic
- 16:07relationship with Priscilla and Aquila as they are working for
- 16:12Christ Jesus. And not only that, we think of
- 16:16how much we are indebted as the church to Paul.
- 16:21And Paul points the people that he's greeting to Priscilla and
- 16:26Aquila, saying that all the churches of the Gentiles are
- 16:29grateful for them. That's some pretty high praise
- 16:33for some tent makers that hang out at their home and share the
- 16:37gospel and disciple people, right?
- 16:40You wouldn't think that maybe they had that large of an impact
- 16:43on the church as a whole. And if we look back to our main
- 16:48scripture and verse 4, it says, for when one says I follow Paul
- 16:53and another I follow Apollo's. Are you not mere human beings?
- 16:59What after all is Apollo's and what is Paul?
- 17:03Only servants through who you came to believe as the Lord has
- 17:07assigned to each his task. Paul and Apollo's are incredible
- 17:13men of the faith obviously, and as they acknowledged, they were
- 17:19merely human doing the task assigned to them by the Lord.
- 17:25And when reflecting upon Priscilla and Aquila following
- 17:29the task that God has provided them, I keep coming back to
- 17:33thinking of my friend and Co worker in Christ, Damian.
- 17:38Because Damian is not the pastor down in La Palmia.
- 17:42He has a full time job six days a week, usually on the ranch,
- 17:46picking limes, hard manual labor 10 hours a day.
- 17:50And then he has a family, 2 beautiful kids, one in middle
- 17:54school, one in high schooler and parents of teenagers.
- 17:58You know that that's potentially more work than your career.
- 18:03And then he also leads within the church, right?
- 18:05Not only on the administrative council, but he also preaches
- 18:09and teaches at mission churches and local villages around them.
- 18:14But he does not limit his leadership or the time of
- 18:17sharing the gospel within the church walls or the mission
- 18:20churches. He's very intentional about
- 18:23hiring people that he knows personally but do not know
- 18:27Christ, so that through the working day, his example, his
- 18:31speech, his talk about Christ and his life can have that
- 18:35impact. He can plant those seeds.
- 18:36He can water those seeds. Same thing with his home.
- 18:40There's very much a cultural division in the town between
- 18:44Protestants and Catholics, and Damian grew up Catholic and was
- 18:49able, is able to use the community that he grew up with
- 18:53to then bring them together with his brothers and sisters at the
- 18:57Methodist Church through parties and celebrations at their home,
- 19:00but also just individual invitations and being able to be
- 19:05that example and that light in his home as he hosts them.
- 19:11But Damian, though he at one point carried 80 lbs of limes
- 19:16for like a 5K and got second place, is still merely human and
- 19:22is using every area of his life to share the gospel, which is
- 19:25the task given to each and every one of us by the Lord.
- 19:30You aren't Paul or even a full time pastor.
- 19:35Thank God. You were all very lucky.
- 19:37And yet as a believer you should be in ministry full time.
- 19:44This doesn't mean necessarily volunteering more at church,
- 19:48though it can include that. But our jobs and our home life
- 19:52should revolve around Christ. Are we viewing them as ministry
- 19:58opportunities or is that limited to inside of these walls?
- 20:03And so how can we do this? I think letting people into our
- 20:08home can be scary or intimidating sometimes.
- 20:11I remember in college I was able to join a Kajic church in Camden
- 20:18where I was known as Brother Jeremiah as Ben loves to bring
- 20:22up and. At this church, they were
- 20:26preaching from James one evening about how the elders of the
- 20:30church should come and anoint the sick with oil.
- 20:33And the way he was preaching it made it seem like it was
- 20:36mandatory and you weren't fulfilling scripture if you
- 20:39didn't ask the elders into your home to do so.
- 20:43So I talked to him about it afterwards and he shared with me
- 20:46the culture and context in which he was working within the
- 20:49community. And he said that there'd only
- 20:52been a couple people in the whole congregation that ever let
- 20:55him through the doors of their homes as the pastor, as he tried
- 20:59to visit and walk with them personally.
- 21:02Most were too ashamed of their home life and didn't want the
- 21:07pastor to see how they were living at home.
- 21:11I remember growing up that my mom would ask me to clean before
- 21:14guests arrived. I did not see the point of that.
- 21:18They already knew us. They were coming to see us.
- 21:20They didn't care how much crap was on the coffee table where we
- 21:24were sitting around. But she was insistent.
- 21:28And I've been to many homes that before they even say hello, how
- 21:31are you? They start with please excuse
- 21:33the mess. And so there's there's a little
- 21:35bit of shame that sometimes comes into when we allow people
- 21:39into our homes. And I think COVID really
- 21:43intensified this, where our homes became our safe haven and
- 21:47became a place where we would primarily keep to ourselves out
- 21:54of confusion, out of fear of whatever it may be through the
- 21:57times. And though I didn't physically
- 22:01write down a list, after talking to many people through the
- 22:04years, it seems that we all kind of had a tier list of who and
- 22:09when we started inviting people back into our homes.
- 22:13How do we prioritize those to come in and visit, some with
- 22:16masks, some without masks, and so forth and so on?
- 22:19And as time went on, we started to loosen up the restrictions.
- 22:24But are we at a point now where we seek opportunities to get
- 22:28people into our homes and invite them into a place of
- 22:32hospitality, a place where we can exemplify the love of Christ
- 22:37in our homes? And so I provided I wrote here
- 22:41simple starter kit because sometimes we don't know where to
- 22:45start. And so I'm going to give you the
- 22:47layup and it's your choice whether you want a dunk or just
- 22:50fall past the backboard. Sports references.
- 22:53I'm sure most of you are proud of that.
- 22:57And so the first way is this summer, we're going to be
- 22:59starting up what we may be calling supper clubs, where
- 23:03we're able to gather, break bread together within people's
- 23:07homes and maybe discuss a little bit about what God is doing
- 23:12through the sermon series of this summer.
- 23:14But more specifically for our college kids.
- 23:17If you're one of our college kids, because you could you
- 23:19raise your hand, I'm going to throw you on the spot.
- 23:21We got 123. No, Timothy, not yet.
- 23:25Got a long way. We want to be able to gather our
- 23:29college kids this summer while they are home.
- 23:33And I don't know of many college kids that deny free food.
- 23:36I don't know many adults that deny free food.
- 23:39And so we are looking for families to be willing to invite
- 23:42the college kids into their home to host a dinner.
- 23:47I will be there as long as I'm in the country to help
- 23:50facilitate. But just to have a place where,
- 23:52like Aquila and Priscilla, we can invite those even from
- 23:55within the body, an opportunity to gather, break bread and
- 24:01disciple those within the body. Second, we have various ways in
- 24:06which we can engage our neighbors and our Co workers.
- 24:11I know that sometimes even without a meal train, we are
- 24:16able to provide meals to others or snacks to others.
- 24:20And it doesn't have to always be if someone is sick or grieving.
- 24:23But it can be as simple. I was thinking of you, and I
- 24:27know that your favorite food is banana bread.
- 24:30I could go for banana bread. And I don't know anyone that
- 24:34gets more upset or looks more poorly at someone after they
- 24:37have given you free food. Do we all like to receive free
- 24:41food? Yes.
- 24:42OK, awesome. If you know my address, you know
- 24:44what to do. But one of those things that we
- 24:49should be doing is living holy lives and engaging people
- 24:52wherever we are, whether it be work, whether it be school, if
- 24:56Christ is truly the center of our lives.
- 25:00It's really hard to talk to people for a long time and him
- 25:03not to come up in conversation if he is at the center of it
- 25:07all. And these are just some
- 25:09generalized areas, primarily food focus because I skipped
- 25:13breakfast this morning. But as you pray about what you
- 25:18can do in your places that God has entrusted you with in this
- 25:23season of life, ask him what talents, what gifts, what
- 25:28resources has he provided you specifically that you can use in
- 25:34ministry. Because he's not asking for more
- 25:37than what we can do, because we're merely humans doing the
- 25:41task assigned to us by the Lord. And if we return back to our
- 25:46Scripture in seven, it says so. Neither the one who plants nor
- 25:50the one who waters is anything but.
- 25:53Only God who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one
- 25:57who waters have one purpose and they will each be rewarded
- 26:02according to their own labor. For we are Co workers in God's
- 26:06service. You are God's field, God's
- 26:10building. We are not in charge of making
- 26:14things grow. Thanks be to God.
- 26:17Amen. That is a lot of pressure, and
- 26:20sometimes we put that pressure on ourselves unnecessarily.
- 26:24We have faith that our faithful works will bear fruit by the
- 26:29grace of God. And Paul even says by the grace
- 26:32of God, by the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as
- 26:37a wise builder and someone else is building on it.
- 26:41But each one should build with care, for no one can lay any
- 26:46foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus
- 26:50Christ. Now you thought we may never get
- 26:54to the sermon title, but this is where it comes in.
- 26:56What are you building? If scripture calls us to build
- 27:02with care, are we being intentional about every area of
- 27:06our lives having Jesus Christ as our foundation?
- 27:10Or are we focusing on building up temporary things for this
- 27:15lifetime alone? When people think of us, are we
- 27:20just another neighbor, or maybe worse, a neighbor that they
- 27:23don't even know the name of at work or school?
- 27:27Do we just blend into the social climate?
- 27:32You don't have to be a Paul. You aren't asked to be a Paul.
- 27:36You aren't even asked to be a Priscilla or Aquila.
- 27:41You are asked to be faithful in everything.
- 27:45Though we are merely human, our Lord has given us the task of
- 27:49making our home and ourselves a wholly safe place where people
- 27:55can experience the love of God shared with them.
- 28:00And before I close, I know sometimes people the the knee
- 28:04jerk reaction, especially with allowing people to enter into
- 28:07our home life, is that we may not feel like the most sociable
- 28:11of people, maybe not the most extroverted of people.
- 28:15And so going back to my friend Damian, the other half of that
- 28:19equation is his wife Doris. And Doris is the sweetest soul
- 28:24and always hospitable and loving and caring.
- 28:28She does not talk and it is not because she is mute.
- 28:32She just doesn't have it in her to start up conversations.
- 28:36So she greets. She then feeds and is a part of
- 28:41the congregation, smiles, laughs, nods, and answers
- 28:44questions when asked. But her way of showing God's
- 28:49love is through the service as people are in her house while
- 28:53Damian does all the talking. And so I'm sure that some of us
- 28:57in this room, especially married ones or even the kids, we have
- 29:00that dynamic where one of us does all of the talking and the
- 29:04other one is really good at serving and showing love in
- 29:08other ways. And so I don't want us to think
- 29:11that one means that we are less useful or fruitful in this type
- 29:16of ministry in our homes. And so as we ponder who we are,
- 29:21how God has created us to be, and how he expects us to not
- 29:26only plant and water seeds, but to build our entire lives on the
- 29:31foundation that is Jesus Christ, I ask again, what are you
- 29:37building? Let us pray.
- 29:43Lord, I thank you so much for the incredible examples of the
- 29:48faith that you have provided in history that we get to learn
- 29:53about through your Word, through what you've revealed to us
- 29:57through your Holy Word. And just ask that we would
- 30:01faithfully do the tasks that you have given us as a congregation,
- 30:06as believers, but also as individuals.
- 30:08That we would entrust you to grow whatever we plant, whatever
- 30:12we water. That we would be faithful as You
- 30:15have been faithful to us, and that we would trust You to bear
- 30:18fruit from our labor, no matter how awkward it may be, no matter
- 30:23how difficult or maybe not what we want to build with our lives,
- 30:29Lord. But we would trust that by
- 30:31building with care and using Christ as our foundation, Lord,
- 30:34that you would bless it and You would use it for things far
- 30:37beyond our lifetime, but that it would be glorifying to You and
- 30:41Your Kingdom. We thank You and we praise you
- 30:44in Jesus name, Amen.
