- 0:17Speaker 1: visit right now with Alice Fox. She is going to
- 0:19Speaker 1: be in Sioux Falls this evening for a really cool presentation.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Vikings, but what is the
- 0:25Speaker 1: official name of this presentation? Once again, Alice.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Thanks so much for having me on John. Um, So
- 0:30Speaker 2: tonight we are going to be having a lecture called
- 0:34Speaker 2: How the Vikings Conquered the Midwest here at Augustana University,
- 0:37Speaker 2: hosted by the Center for Western Studies.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And you are the one doing the presentation tonight. Let's
- 0:42Speaker 1: talk about your background and how you got involved in this.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So, yeah, so I am from the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
- 0:49Speaker 2: just about six hours to the east. And my interest
- 0:53Speaker 2: is in how the Vikings have been remembered after the
- 0:57Speaker 2: Middle Ages up until the present, and especially here in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the Midwest, where we have so much exciting culture based
- 1:04Speaker 2: around the Vikings and their literature and their material culture.
- 1:07Speaker 1: In the Midwest, there's a lot of Vikings. There's like
- 1:10Speaker 1: a football team in Minnesota. There's a bunch of sports
- 1:12Speaker 1: teams and schools all around. And if you go to
- 1:15Speaker 1: the event tonight, you're going to find out why we
- 1:17Speaker 1: have such a fascination with Vikings and kind of get
- 1:19Speaker 1: a little background on why Vikings are so prevalent in
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Midwest.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Precisely. We're going to talk about sculptures. We're going to
- 1:27Speaker 2: talk about mascots, including, you know, our very own here
- 1:30Speaker 2: in Sioux Falls. And people dressing up as Vikings, people
- 1:34Speaker 2: preserving Viking arts, and any kind of way that people
- 1:39Speaker 2: might still be engaged in this Scandinavian history, whether they
- 1:42Speaker 2: themselves are of Scandinavian extraction or not.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So if somebody would like to join you this evening,
- 1:47Speaker 1: is there a cost to get in?
- 1:49Speaker 2: No, it is a free event. We welcome all comers.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's part of the Viking Days reunion on campus.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I love that. So how long have you been interested
- 1:58Speaker 1: in this and what got you interested in it?
- 1:59Speaker 2: So I got into the Vikings back in graduate school.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I started out actually interested in the French Revolution, but
- 2:06Speaker 2: I was TAing for a class on Viking history and
- 2:09Speaker 2: just absolutely fell in love with the Icelandic sagas and
- 2:15Speaker 2: ended up sort of moving into that space. And I've
- 2:18Speaker 2: been giving talks about the Vikings for the last four years.
- 2:21Speaker 1: As you're out doing presentations about the Vikings, I bet
- 2:24Speaker 1: you encounter some really cool questions, don't you?
- 2:26Speaker 2: I love hearing from all sorts of people from all
- 2:29Speaker 2: walks of life about where the Vikings have intersected with
- 2:32Speaker 2: their lives, whether it's, you know, they're learning null binding,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know, if they've come through fiber arts and are
- 2:38Speaker 2: now getting into sort of more Viking age forms of
- 2:41Speaker 2: knitting and other fiber craft, or people who went to
- 2:44Speaker 2: a school with the Vikings or people who have watched
- 2:46Speaker 2: the TV shows and just really loved them.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Tonight is the night. It's in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
- 2:50Speaker 1: The event is free, and we're going to find out
- 2:52Speaker 1: right now what time should I be there to take
- 2:55Speaker 1: in the big event.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So we're going to be talking at 6 o'clock.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Very nice. And I've seen this shared on Facebook quite
- 3:00Speaker 1: a bit, so I'll be sure to share it on
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Sunny Radio page. Thank you so much for taking
- 3:05Speaker 1: the time to chat.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I can't wait to meet people tonight and hear what
- 3:08Speaker 2: you have to say about the Vikings and get to
- 3:10Speaker 2: know everyone a little better. Dr.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Alice Kwok has been our guest. She's from the University
- 3:14Speaker 1: of Wisconsin-Madison, but she will be in Sioux Falls tonight,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and she'll be at the Center for Western Studies on
- 3:20Speaker 1: Summit in Sioux Falls. Again, if you would like to go,
- 3:23Speaker 1: it is a free event. All of the details at Facebook.com
