- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome into another episode of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Checo Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com.
- 0:17Speaker 1: And we're kicking off another week. That's right. It's coordinator day.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's a Wednesday. Things change a little bit when they
- 0:23Speaker 1: play on Monday night. But we heard from Vic Fangio,
- 0:27Speaker 1: Michael Clay, and Sean Mannion this morning. We'll get into
- 0:31Speaker 1: some of what they had to say, and I'll offer
- 0:33Speaker 1: my thoughts on that. And I also want to talk
- 0:35Speaker 1: about a roster transaction or transactions that happened on Tuesday
- 0:41Speaker 1: and what that means likely moving towards Monday Night Football.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So we'll start with that. On Tuesday afternoon, the Eagles
- 0:49Speaker 1: released running back Jaden Blue from the 53, and they
- 0:53Speaker 1: waived injured.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Running back Carson Steele. And so that leaves them.
- 0:58Speaker 1: On the 53 with only Saquon Barkley and Damian Pierce.
- 1:02Speaker 1: They also signed veteran running back Elijah Mitchell, who was
- 1:06Speaker 1: with the team in training camp, suffered an injury and
- 1:08Speaker 1: then was waived. He's on the practice squad now. Perhaps
- 1:12Speaker 1: Jaden Blue returns on the practice squad. But let's look
- 1:15Speaker 1: at what this potentially means. And I would imagine it
- 1:19Speaker 1: bodes well for the return of Saquon Barkley. You certainly
- 1:23Speaker 1: don't want to release a running back in Jaden Blue
- 1:26Speaker 1: on the 53 if you're already shorthanded at that position
- 1:29Speaker 1: or envision being shorthanded moving forward. And then Carson Steele,
- 1:34Speaker 1: that's just a really unfortunate move. uh scenario there where
- 1:38Speaker 1: he injured himself he finally got a chance to play
- 1:40Speaker 1: in the regular season takes a four-yard reception lowers his
- 1:45Speaker 1: shoulder and then comes off with an injury was in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the medical tent goes inside presumably for x-rays comes back
- 1:53Speaker 1: out i see him on the kickoff and then you
- 1:55Speaker 1: also see him walking off the field grabbing that that
- 1:58Speaker 1: same shoulder so it's a shame because when players get
- 2:02Speaker 1: their opportunity they are so few far in between When
- 2:07Speaker 1: you're a reserve player, when you're someone who's hanging on
- 2:10Speaker 1: in the NFL, when you finally get your opportunity to
- 2:14Speaker 1: go out injured, that's a tough deal. And Carson Steele,
- 2:18Speaker 1: high character guy, didn't get a chance to talk to
- 2:22Speaker 1: him that much, talked to him in training camp and
- 2:25Speaker 1: always had a smile walking around the locker room. And
- 2:28Speaker 1: maybe once he recovers, depending on the severity of the injury,
- 2:31Speaker 1: maybe he returns, but You always, you know, I like
- 2:35Speaker 1: to put things in a perspective there because he's not
- 2:37Speaker 1: a marquee name. He's not someone that has the luxury of, yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know, when I recover from that, I'll be able
- 2:44Speaker 1: to be back out there. There's no guarantee when he
- 2:47Speaker 1: will be able to be in another regular season game.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And then Jaden Blue didn't get any opportunities in the game.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And that's a little curious. And I talked about why
- 2:56Speaker 1: his explosive qualities on an offense that lacks explosiveness are
- 3:01Speaker 1: You would think that you can get him the ball
- 3:03Speaker 1: a handful of times to see what he can do
- 3:05Speaker 1: and threaten the defense in a different way. Hollywood Brown
- 3:08Speaker 1: not being active, one of the rare healthy scratches in
- 3:13Speaker 1: that game, and someone who can, in theory, stretch a defense.
- 3:17Speaker 1: The fact that he wasn't active or really has an
- 3:20Speaker 1: impact on the team. Now, he was sidelined for a
- 3:22Speaker 1: while with an ankle injury, but he played in the
- 3:25Speaker 1: Tennessee game, had a couple of carries there. and then
- 3:28Speaker 1: was inactive in the game against Carolina, which I thought
- 3:31Speaker 1: was a little eyebrow-raising there. But nevertheless, that's where things
- 3:35Speaker 1: stand right now. But I say all that to say
- 3:38Speaker 1: that when we're talking about the injury situation and Saquon
- 3:41Speaker 1: Barkley being deemed week-to-week a couple of weeks ago, that
- 3:45Speaker 1: would seem to bode well for his chances of being
- 3:47Speaker 1: available Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. And obviously the
- 3:51Speaker 1: practice week has not started yet.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That will be Thursday.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So that's where we'll get our first glimpse of the
- 3:57Speaker 1: injured players coming off that game and see where things
- 4:00Speaker 1: stand with Saquon. But I would imagine that that is
- 4:03Speaker 1: a positive development with regard to Saquon Barkley and his return.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So players that I'll be keeping an eye on this
- 4:11Speaker 1: week in practice. Jordan Davis, who, remember, left that game
- 4:14Speaker 1: with an ankle injury.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It didn't look well. It didn't look good.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He had a bag of ice around, I believe it
- 4:21Speaker 1: was his right ankle, after the game in the locker
- 4:23Speaker 1: room when I saw him.
- 4:24Speaker 2: That's a key injury to keep an eye on.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Jalex Hunt and Vic Fangio didn't really give an indication
- 4:31Speaker 1: as to whether or not he anticipates Jalex being available
- 4:34Speaker 1: this week.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He said we'll have to see how practice goes.
- 4:38Speaker 1: That's one that while it's probably unlikely, he didn't shut
- 4:43Speaker 1: the door on that. And they certainly could use a
- 4:46Speaker 1: reinforcement there in that edge rusher room. Nolan Smith had
- 4:49Speaker 1: the concussion in the Panthers game. Now he has an
- 4:52Speaker 1: extra day to get through protocol, but that's not a guarantee.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Just look at Zach Vaughn's situation. Zach Vaughn missed the game,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and those things are a very delicate situation. It's a
- 5:03Speaker 1: brain injury, and that's not something that has a definitive
- 5:07Speaker 1: timeline or anything like that. So, of course, Nolan Smith
- 5:10Speaker 1: will be a player that I monitor his progress throughout
- 5:13Speaker 1: the week.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And Jonathan Grenard.
- 5:17Speaker 1: is an interesting one here because he played in the game.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I know he had the ankle injury. He was day-to-day,
- 5:24Speaker 1: but he had no designation going into the game, and
- 5:27Speaker 1: he played 24 snaps. Now, he appeared to aggravate that
- 5:31Speaker 1: on a play in which he was in coverage and
- 5:34Speaker 1: hopped off a little bit, looked a little gimpy, I
- 5:37Speaker 1: guess is probably a fair assessment there. And I kind
- 5:41Speaker 1: of like what Vic Fangio said about Jay Wicks Hunt.
- 5:44Speaker 1: You have to see how practice goes for Grenard, whether
- 5:48Speaker 1: or not he can be available, or I should say
- 5:51Speaker 1: take on more snaps than what you've seen him doing.
- 5:55Speaker 1: They need some bodies, and those are players that I
- 5:59Speaker 1: will be certainly keeping an eye on. I don't want
- 6:00Speaker 1: to forget about Michael Carter II, who had the abdominal injury,
- 6:05Speaker 1: missed the.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Game on Sunday.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I think he's done some good things when he's been
- 6:11Speaker 1: called upon on defense.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I thought he had a good training camp.
- 6:14Speaker 1: As I like to reiterate, he had three interceptions in
- 6:17Speaker 1: the summer, and when he was plugged in as a starter,
- 6:22Speaker 1: I thought he was active.
- 6:23Speaker 2: He was around the football field.
- 6:25Speaker 1: He took good angles and he wrapped up when he
- 6:28Speaker 1: had the opportunity, which it sounds like it might not
- 6:32Speaker 1: be much. But when you're talking about a defense that
- 6:35Speaker 1: tackling has been a little spotty, when you have someone
- 6:38Speaker 1: on the back end like that who can wrap up
- 6:40Speaker 1: and be a reliable player, someone who is a really
- 6:44Speaker 1: sharp football mind, you certainly don't want to take that
- 6:47Speaker 1: for granted. So we'll see what the immediate future holds
- 6:51Speaker 1: for Michael Carter when the Eagles hit the practice field
- 6:53Speaker 1: on Thursday. Vic Fangio really highlighted the play of Kenny Moore,
- 7:00Speaker 1: the veteran defensive back who started. Well, I say started,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but Cooper DeGene started. The Eagles were in base, but
- 7:08Speaker 1: it wasn't Marcus Epps. It was Kenny Moore who was
- 7:13Speaker 1: aligned opposite Drew McCubbin when the Eagles were in nickel.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And Vic Fangio seemed to be very pleased with what
- 7:20Speaker 1: he saw from Kenny.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I talked to Kenny after the game.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I tweeted out, or I think I put it in
- 7:25Speaker 1: my story, the quote about his communication with Drew Makuba.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And I'll go back and look at some of the
- 7:32Speaker 1: things that he had to say there. But Kenny Moore,
- 7:35Speaker 1: he is undersized. Yes, so is Michael Carter. So is
- 7:38Speaker 1: Drew Makuba, for that matter. But he has played a
- 7:41Speaker 1: lot of football. I talk about another sharp-minded football player.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That's Kenny Moore. The consummate professional, it seems like wherever
- 7:49Speaker 1: you would put him, he's going to find a way
- 7:51Speaker 1: to make it a positive and be an asset to
- 7:55Speaker 1: the team. And it sounds like he's going to be
- 7:58Speaker 1: the guy moving forward unless something changes. But why Kenny
- 8:02Speaker 1: Moore instead of Marcus Epps? Well, Vic Fangio kind of said, well,
- 8:06Speaker 1: Marcus hadn't been playing, thought Kenny Moore did some good
- 8:09Speaker 1: things when pressed into service in Jacksonville, or I'm sorry,
- 8:13Speaker 1: against Jacksonville in London. And they're kind of just trying
- 8:17Speaker 1: to establish some continuity there.
- 8:19Speaker 2: And I have to imagine this is sort of an
- 8:21Speaker 2: aside to this.

- 11:33Speaker 1: How challenging it might be for someone like Drew McCuba,
- 11:36Speaker 1: who's trying to establish his voice on defense. He's trying
- 11:39Speaker 1: to really take on the communication piece. Vic Fangio said,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you know, the guys handle their, their sides of the
- 11:45Speaker 1: field in terms of the communication, but drew has made
- 11:48Speaker 1: some strides there. But when you're a young safety and
- 11:51Speaker 1: you've had Cooper to Jean playing beside you, Marcus Epps,
- 11:55Speaker 1: Michael Carter, and now Kenny Moore for continuity purposes, that
- 11:58Speaker 1: has to be a little challenging as you're trying to
- 12:01Speaker 1: establish some stability there. But, I think Drew has been fine,
- 12:05Speaker 1: all things considered. It seems like Vic Fangio is pleased
- 12:08Speaker 1: with what he's seen from him. And I kind of,
- 12:11Speaker 1: try to read between the lines or decipher what Vic says.
- 12:15Speaker 1: He seems a little bit more confident in Makuba relative
- 12:19Speaker 1: to maybe his answers on Jihad Campbell, but he seemed
- 12:23Speaker 1: pleased with where that rotation is right now.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And it's kind of going to be what it is.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He doesn't have a set plan in terms of snap
- 12:31Speaker 1: allocation situational. It's kind of going to be a field thing.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And Jihad started that game. Jeremiah came in later and,
- 12:37Speaker 1: Jihad played more snaps. I think that's probably the smart move.
- 12:41Speaker 2: He's a young player.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Just understand that there's going to be growing pains and
- 12:45Speaker 1: you take that. It kind of comes with it. It's
- 12:48Speaker 1: the startup cost, I guess you can say. And I
- 12:52Speaker 1: know that Jihad has been sort of a player that
- 12:57Speaker 1: a lot of folks out there like to point the
- 12:59Speaker 1: finger at.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think some of it's fair. I think a lot
- 13:02Speaker 2: of it is excessive.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And piling on without knowing the full context of what
- 13:06Speaker 1: his job responsibilities are at all times. But there's clearly
- 13:10Speaker 1: a reason why Vic Fangio is rotating linebackers there opposite
- 13:15Speaker 1: Zach Bond. And they're looking to get a little bit
- 13:18Speaker 1: more consistency, maybe accentuate the strengths of what one player
- 13:22Speaker 1: has that the other doesn't. For example, Trotter is very instinctive.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He is good at reading and diagnosing. He's often in
- 13:29Speaker 1: the right place. You're not going to catch him off guard.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And Campbell just brings elite athleticism, good length. I think
- 13:36Speaker 1: in theory, he can be a really good coverage linebacker,
- 13:39Speaker 1: but there are times where it feels like he's swimming
- 13:41Speaker 1: a little bit in terms of just grasping the intricacies
- 13:44Speaker 1: and nuances that are required to play linebacker in this defense.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And so Vic was pleased with how the rotation went
- 13:52Speaker 1: and we'll see where things go from there. He, he
- 13:56Speaker 1: talked about the edge rusher situation and how going into
- 14:00Speaker 1: the game, they were going to use Keyshawn James Newby.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And it sounds like it was probably going to be
- 14:06Speaker 1: for a minimal amount on defense. In addition to what
- 14:10Speaker 1: James Newby was going to provide on special teams, but
- 14:13Speaker 1: circumstances have a way of changing things. And what you
- 14:16Speaker 1: saw in that game was the Eagles being grossly undermanned.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Grenard being a little gimpy there at the ankle, Arnold
- 14:23Speaker 1: have a Katie and, played in the 70s in terms
- 14:26Speaker 1: of his snaps.
- 14:27Speaker 2: James Newby, I think, played close to 50.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I think it was at 48, 61 percent, I believe,
- 14:33Speaker 1: without looking. And Vic said, you know, he was pleased
- 14:36Speaker 1: with what he saw from him.
- 14:37Speaker 2: He's athletic. He's fast. He is undersized, but he's.
- 14:41Speaker 1: A player to kind of keep an eye on this
- 14:43Speaker 1: week because there is a world where he's going to
- 14:46Speaker 1: have to play a decent amount of snaps, depending on
- 14:49Speaker 1: the health situation with Nolan Smith, Jay Wilkson, and Jonathan Grenard.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Let's not forget that A.J. Epinesa was out for that
- 14:56Speaker 1: game with a back injury. He entered the game as doubtful.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So the Eagles are really banged up there at the
- 15:02Speaker 1: edge rusher position, which is why every player on the roster,
- 15:06Speaker 1: whether they're on the active or the practice squad, they matter.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And that's why for me, I don't ever want anyone
- 15:13Speaker 1: to ask me a question about someone on the roster
- 15:16Speaker 1: that I can't answer because I should know something about
- 15:19Speaker 1: every player on the roster and be able to tell
- 15:21Speaker 1: you something about them.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And James Newby is somebody who the Eagles like.
- 15:25Speaker 1: My gut tells me that he's a player that they
- 15:28Speaker 1: were a little nervous about losing, potentially.
- 15:32Speaker 2: When they waived him.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And I know a lot of the the apprehension there
- 15:38Speaker 1: was about Bernard or, uh, who are Bernard and Joshua Wayru,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but James Newby is someone who is able to help
- 15:45Speaker 1: you now. He's a player who is much further along
- 15:48Speaker 1: than those guys and the subject and the waivers.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's a four or.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Five speed guy, I think running down the field and
- 15:55Speaker 1: maybe taking on a special teams role. Potentially I can
- 15:58Speaker 1: envision sort of a Patrick Johnson type of, of role
- 16:02Speaker 1: kind of reminds me of him a little bit. I
- 16:03Speaker 1: think Pat maybe was a little bit, uh, bigger physically,
- 16:07Speaker 1: whereas James Newby is more athletic and he's faster. And
- 16:12Speaker 1: I thought he had some good plays. Not bad for
- 16:15Speaker 1: someone who was kind of thrown into the deep end
- 16:17Speaker 1: and saying, We need you. It's you or nobody. And
- 16:20Speaker 1: I thought there were some positives to take away from that.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And this week, I want to learn a little bit
- 16:26Speaker 1: more about his development behind the scenes and how he's
- 16:29Speaker 1: really taken to that, because he looked like a player
- 16:33Speaker 1: that can help the Eagles. And I'm saying as a
- 16:36Speaker 1: fourth or fifth edge rusher, I'm not saying I'm not
- 16:38Speaker 1: suggesting that he's a top three in a rotation type
- 16:41Speaker 1: of guy.
- 16:42Speaker 2: He needs to get stronger defensively.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And build up that strength, that lower body strength. But
- 16:47Speaker 1: when you see him out there, I watch his speed.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I focus on him on a number of snaps, turning
- 16:52Speaker 1: the corner. He has a really good get-off, and I
- 16:56Speaker 1: think for burly offensive linemen, sometimes that can be a
- 16:59Speaker 1: challenge with speed rushers.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And we'll just see where things go.
- 17:03Speaker 1: We're way early into this process in terms of who's
- 17:05Speaker 1: going to be available and who's not. But it's something
- 17:08Speaker 1: that I will certainly be monitoring throughout the week. Sean
- 17:11Speaker 1: Mannion spoke about details and fundamentals and that he still
- 17:15Speaker 1: feels good about the under center. And he's not going
- 17:18Speaker 1: to deviate from that. He still has conviction with regard
- 17:21Speaker 1: to that conviction in the fundamentals and the play style
- 17:25Speaker 1: that the Eagles have. He asked himself, am I adjusting
- 17:29Speaker 1: and teaching as best as possible? So he looked inward there,
- 17:32Speaker 1: as you would expect a coach to do. He mentioned
- 17:36Speaker 1: Tanner McKee and that he is a fit for this system.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And with six more weeks of practice, how much more
- 17:42Speaker 1: of a difference that can make. And talked about him
- 17:44Speaker 1: being just sharp mentally and accurate. So now it's about,
- 17:48Speaker 1: in my estimation anyway, tailoring the offense around McKee and
- 17:52Speaker 1: figuring out what his preferences are, and how you can
- 17:56Speaker 1: best put him in a position to be successful. That's
- 17:59Speaker 1: the Eagles' best chance here moving forward as they venture
- 18:02Speaker 1: into the most critical part of their season, an NFC slate.
- 18:06Speaker 1: The teams that are upcoming, I think, the next six
- 18:09Speaker 1: or seven games, they don't have a very imposing record.
- 18:14Speaker 1: This is their opportunity. If they want to salvage this
- 18:16Speaker 1: season to try and get things together and find a
- 18:21Speaker 1: way to generate some semblance of an offense and bail
- 18:26Speaker 1: out the defense who have been doing a lot of
- 18:27Speaker 1: the heavy lifting as I've outlined.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And Vic Fangio had a great.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Line about the defense and the snaps that they're accruing
- 18:35Speaker 1: at an alarming rate. Really, as I mentioned, aside from
- 18:38Speaker 1: week two in Tennessee, the Eagles defense has been on
- 18:41Speaker 1: the field for 70 plus snaps each week, which is
- 18:44Speaker 1: a daunting task to consider. And he mentioned, I told
- 18:48Speaker 1: the guys in training camp, you can't control the, when
- 18:51Speaker 1: you get on the field, but you control when we
- 18:53Speaker 1: get off the field.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And I thought that was a good line from a
- 18:56Speaker 2: veteran coordinator.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And that kind of speaks to just the mindset that
- 19:01Speaker 1: I believe is instilled in these guys. I don't sense
- 19:04Speaker 1: that there's going to be a rift or anything, offense
- 19:07Speaker 1: and defense. The Eagles really haven't had that, despite some
- 19:11Speaker 1: of the choppy waters that you've seen with the offense.
- 19:13Speaker 2: There hasn't been this rift since. despite the defense.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Having to do the heavy lifting and being on the
- 19:18Speaker 1: field for a considerable amount of time.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Okay, you know those pieces in your closet that you
- 19:22Speaker 3: find yourself wearing on repeat. There's the sweater that goes

- 21:04Speaker 2: It's the best way to support the show.

- 22:04Speaker 3: and up.
- 22:06Speaker 1: So Sean Manning also mentioned that Jalen's been around a
- 22:10Speaker 1: and that he can have a positive impact being around
- 22:13Speaker 1: the team and helping Tanner McKee in terms of preparation, especially,
- 22:18Speaker 1: for example, a Monday night football game. This is how
- 22:21Speaker 1: I prepared.
- 22:24Speaker 2: When you have an extra day to do so.
- 22:25Speaker 1: These are my notes when I was going against this team,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and these are things to watch, and don't forget about this.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Jalen is still going to be around, and it was encouraging.
- 22:34Speaker 1: To hear that he is around and doing whatever he can,
- 22:38Speaker 1: despite his circumstances, to be a positive impact behind the scenes.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And those are just some of my takeaways from the
- 22:46Speaker 1: Eagles pressers and trying to just sort of summarize the
- 22:49Speaker 1: week going forward and some of the key things that
- 22:52Speaker 1: I'll be keeping an eye on.
- 22:53Speaker 2: And I'll have much more for you throughout the week.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And, of course, with the Jalen Hurts situation and as
- 22:58Speaker 1: the NFLPA, as they put out in their statement, On
- 23:02Speaker 1: Tuesday evening, there's going to be a full investigation in
- 23:04Speaker 1: terms of just the treatment that Jalen Hurts had throughout
- 23:08Speaker 1: this whole process. So that's a developing story, and I
- 23:12Speaker 1: don't really have anything new to add to that. But
- 23:14Speaker 1: when I do, I will bring that to you, as
- 23:17Speaker 1: I will all of the Eagles' information this week as
- 23:20Speaker 1: things get started on the practice field Thursday. And that's
- 23:24Speaker 1: going to do it for this episode of DiCecco Daily.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all on the
- 23:29Speaker 1: next one.
