- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to radiois turned Story Hour as a
- 0:06reminder is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:10blinder of other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:14printing material. Today we will be reading from various books
- 0:18on Easter. Your reader today is Diane. Our first book
- 0:23is titled Happy Easter, Little Critter. It was published by
- 0:28random House Picture back Book. It has a copyright year
- 0:35of nineteen eighty eight and it was written by Mercer Mayor.
- 0:41It's the Easter morning. I bet the Easter money has
- 0:43already come. I'll quietly tiptoe downstairs and find all the
- 0:48Easter goodies before anyone else wakes up. But as usual,
- 0:53my little sister is up before me. I got a
- 0:57toy egg that you can look into a line to bunny,
- 1:00some candy chickens, a bunch of chocolate eggs, and millions
- 1:04of jelly beans. The Easter bunny gave my little sister
- 1:07the same things. Dad says that that's so we won't argue.
- 1:13Mom says we can't eat any of it until after breakfast.
- 1:17After breakfast, we have to get dressed for church. Dad
- 1:20starts the car and we all get in. My little
- 1:24sister likes to get all dressed up, but I don't.
- 1:26At church, I can't see anything because everyone is wearing
- 1:29funny hats. After church, all the kids die Easter eggs.
- 1:35I think my eggs are the best. While the eggs dry,
- 1:38we have a big picnic lunch, then our parents hide
- 1:42the eggs in the field. We're not supposed to peek. Next,
- 1:47we all line up and run into the field to
- 1:50find the eggs. Sometimes too many kids find the same egg.
- 1:55Sometimes you walk right by an egg and someone else
- 1:59finds it. Sometimes little kids don't find any, so you
- 2:04have to help them. But by the time we go home,
- 2:08everyone has had a happy Easter. Our next book is
- 2:13titled Easter Fun and it was published by Saint Martin's
- 2:20Press by Pretty Books. It has a company right ear
- 2:26of twenty seventeen and the author of our book is
- 2:33Joe Ryan, Robin Newton, Ellie Boltwood and Amy Oliver. Ducklin's
- 2:39and Chicks hatch one by one. Fluffy babies make Easter Fun.
- 2:45Fresh spring blossom and buzzy bees, daffodils swaying in the breeze,
- 2:52the fluffy tail and ears that flop. The Easter bunny
- 2:55goes hop hop hop. How many Easter eggs can you
- 2:58see in the bait? One? Two three? Hip hooray Easters.
- 3:06Here we all enjoy this time of year. Our next
- 3:10story is titled Fancy Nancy and the Missing Easter Bunny.
- 3:15It was published by Harper Festival in imprint of Harper
- 3:18Collins Publishers. It has a copyright year of twenty seventeen
- 3:23and the author of our story is Jane O'Connor. Oh
- 3:28la la, look at my eggs. They are tram magnificent.
- 3:33That's French for very magnificent. Tomorrow's Easter and we are
- 3:38almost all ready for our egg hunt. We also make
- 3:41fancy Easter baskets. I add some lovely lace and feathers
- 3:45to mine. Voi la. It is perfect. This year we
- 3:49have even had a real Easter bunny. It's Nibbles, JoJo's
- 3:53class pet. Every weekend someone gets to take Nibbles home.
- 3:57Night Night, Nibbles, it is East, Thank your morning, ding down.
- 4:02Freddie and bre are here. Nibbles is in her cage.
- 4:05Brie and Freddy want to play with her, but my
- 4:08mom doesn't want her hopping away. It can't hurt to
- 4:11let her out just for a little while. A second later,
- 4:15I put her back because Dad is calling us the
- 4:18count of three. Let the egg hunting begin, one, two, three,
- 4:24Off we go. I look under the big bush, No eggs.
- 4:28I look behind nibbles cage. No eggs, soccer blue, no
- 4:33nibbles either. I forgot to lock her cage. This is dreadful.
- 4:37This is even worse than very very very bad. Should
- 4:41I tell my parents? Or perhaps I can find nibbles
- 4:44before Jojo sees she's disappear. I start to hunt. Soon
- 4:49I discover clue nibbles. Fancy Tiara Aha. Now spawn to
- 4:55another clue, Paul Prince. I follow the trail. How many
- 5:00eggs have you found? Everybody keeps asking me none. I'm
- 5:04too busy looking for nib Then I clamp my mouth
- 5:07shut and continue my search. I see another clue, bits
- 5:11of lettuce, nibbles favorite. I must be close. I follow
- 5:15the lettuce trail. Nibbles. There you are. I am so
- 5:20relieved to see you. What is nibbles doing here? My
- 5:24mom asks, so I confess. I let her out sober
- 5:28and Freddy could play with her. I must have forgotten
- 5:31to walk the cage. I say, how super sorry I am,
- 5:35and my mom forgives me. She is the most understanding
- 5:38mother in the world. Nibbles is back in her cage,
- 5:41and now I need to find some Easter eggs alas
- 5:46everybody found them all. My Easter basket is fancy but empty.
- 5:51I tell Joe, Joe and Brey and Freddie why. They
- 5:55talk in whispers. They say to close my eyes and wait,
- 6:00so I do. A minute later, Bree tells me we
- 6:04rehit some of our eggs, so you can find them soon.
- 6:08My basket is full. Now it's time for refreshments for
- 6:12all the human beings. That's fancy for people, for the puppies,
- 6:16and of course for Nibbles too. Our next book is
- 6:22called Fancy Nancy's Elegant Easter and it was published by
- 6:26Harper Festival in imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. It has a
- 6:30copyright year of twenty ten and the author is Jane O'Connor.
- 6:36It's almost time for Easter Gala. That's a fancy word
- 6:40for fancy party. I am already, but my mom is not.
- 6:44She has been busy hiding Easter eggs. Knock, knock, someone
- 6:49is at the door. I open it and say bonjour.
- 6:53That is French for hello. It's my best friend, Brie.
- 6:58My mama asks us to help her finish. She's getting
- 7:00everything ready. We we we we say yes, yes, yes,
- 7:06First we have to find pretty plates and nipkins for
- 7:08an elegant Easter party. Plain white just will not do. Look,
- 7:14Brice says. She pulls out something colorful from a paper bag. Boila,
- 7:21The table looks lovely now. But are we finished? Definitely not.
- 7:27In the garden, everything is in bloom. Brian, I make
- 7:30a beautiful bouquet that is a very pretty bunch of flowers.
- 7:35My dog friend Sheie, helps too. The cabin is full
- 7:41fancy things my mom uses for special occasions. Brian, I
- 7:45show Dead which vase we like, and he gets it
- 7:48down for us. Divine, I say, you say that when
- 7:53something is so gorgeous, it is very hard to top.
- 7:57Then Dad shows us what he bought for the party. Hurry,
- 8:02I say, the guest will be here soon. At last,
- 8:08everything is just right. My parents both look so elegant
- 8:12that I think of something awful that is worse than bad.
- 8:16We have no easter, Bunny, I cry, are you sure?
- 8:21Mom says, She winks at me, and something rustles behind
- 8:25the curtain. The Easter Gala will be perfectly fancy after all.
- 8:32Our next story is titled This Almost Time for Easter,
- 8:38and it's a It was published by Martin k nick
- 8:41Elder Books, which is an imprint of Simon and Schuster
- 8:47Children's Publishing Division. It has a copyright YERE of twenty
- 8:51twenty six and the author of the book is Masha Oh.
- 8:56So when sunny days bring more warmer rays, as winter's
- 9:01chill has passed, and children bag to color eggs, this
- 9:06day is coming fast. First, you'll have to boil your eggs,
- 9:10so grab some from the pack, go super slow or else,
- 9:14Oh no, watch out before they crack. Decorate and dive
- 9:18in purple, yellow, blue, and green. Don't stop unless you've
- 9:22made a mess, but then be sure to clean. The
- 9:27eggs are gone. The hunt is on. They're hidden everywhere,
- 9:30so look around, go up and down. You'll find them
- 9:33here and there. After that you'll make dessert. Prepare yourself
- 9:39to bake some rabbits, chicks and carrot sticks. Relax, it's
- 9:43only cake. A bunny rabbit left behind a basket filled
- 9:47with snacks, then disappeared. Where did he go? Try following
- 9:53the tracks It's time to find a fancy outfit. Dress
- 9:57your very best, select your clothes, strike a post fantastic.
- 10:02I'm impressed. You'll gather with your loved ones for some
- 10:06fun and feasting too, So fill your plate. Hold on now,
- 10:11wait is all that food for you? The day has come.
- 10:15It's time to go, so get up off your keyster.
- 10:19Your eggs are died instead of fry. That means it's
- 10:22time for Thanksgiving. No, you bulge your eggs and dyed them,
- 10:29search to find them. That was funny. You baked some
- 10:32snacks and tried to track a crafty little bunny. You
- 10:36picture fit and joined up with your family for a feast. Sir,
- 10:40your baskets cramped, so understand it's almost time for eas
- 10:45s our. Next book is titled Tiny Bear's Easter Prayer
- 10:52and it was published by Little Shepherd Books and Imprini
- 10:55of Scholastic. It has a copy right here of twenty
- 11:01twenty six and the offer of our story is Lori
- 11:06and Grover. On this early Easter morn, Tiny Bear blinks
- 11:12sun so warm, he'll hunt for eggs, walk and pray
- 11:16through the meadows grassy sway. Winter's gone and trees have leaves.
- 11:21Tiny Bear twirls in the breeze, feeling Jesus in his heart.
- 11:25He thanks God for Easter, starts flowers took as we nose.
- 11:31Tiny bear laughs, wiggles toes, sees a rabbit skinter by
- 11:35a blue egg, and a butterfly newly hatched. Our yellow
- 11:39chicks zipping around so speedy quick. He stops for eggs
- 11:44over by, where a mama and Joe lie. Tiny bear
- 11:47pets little lamb spots their papas great horned ramps. Thanking God.
- 11:52He leaps and runs, finds more eggs, such pretty ones
- 11:57full of wonder. Tiny bearys a sweet blue jay up there,
- 12:02shares an egg with mama. Duck follows ducklings wiggle tuck,
- 12:07holding close the eggs. He's found, Tiny Bear. Here's nature sounds, chirping,
- 12:13crooked swishing brook. Quiet fox nips in a nook, watching
- 12:19tadboas tadpoles dive and swish. He sees eggs beyond. Shyfish
- 12:25lily's sway around his knees. Tiny Bear smiles at the
- 12:30beasts one two raindrops gently fall, air of sweet for
- 12:34one and all glowing light breaks into rays on more eggs.
- 12:39He's so amazed, such a beautiful, wide world under clouds,
- 12:44a wispy world. Tiny Bear looks up and breathes. He
- 12:48prays thanks for all he sees. Rainbow arches up above
- 12:54dancing friends and swooping duves. Tiny Bear joins in the fun.
- 13:00Jesus lives for everyone. Our next book is called Miss
- 13:06Fanny May's Fine New Easter Hat, and it was published
- 13:10like by Little Brown and Company. It has a copyright
- 13:16year of nineteen ninety seven and the author of the
- 13:19book is Melissa Milich. Mama always says the kind of
- 13:24had you wear on your head is not so important
- 13:28as the thoughts inside. But this year Daddy said, you're
- 13:31absolutely right, Fannie May, and the thoughts inside my head
- 13:36keep telling me it's time you had a fine new
- 13:40Easter hat. So Daddy and I had to plan to
- 13:43make this special shopping trip ourselves. The morning before Easter.
- 13:47We were going to write all the way into Marraden
- 13:50City to buy mama hat to wear to church. Before
- 13:55we left, Mama took me aside, I'm counting on you, Tandy.
- 13:59At ain't no way anyway I'm going to be letting
- 14:02him do something as important as buying a Lee eighties
- 14:07easter hat by himself. Yes, Mama, I said, Now be
- 14:11sure not to let Daddy spend dollar his money, yes, Mama,
- 14:15And don't let him be coming home with no ugly hat. No, Mama,
- 14:20I sure won't. And then my little sister and brothers
- 14:23came out on the porch, still in their pajamas to
- 14:26say goodbye, and the wind all those hands made waving
- 14:31at once blew us on right good start to Meridian City.
- 14:36From a wagon. I could really see that spring had
- 14:39painted a pretty picture on the countryside. To me, this
- 14:42time of year has always been full of surprises, more
- 14:46so than Christmas. The bear trees from the winter suddenly
- 14:50get the first leaves on them, like a lady putting
- 14:52on her gloves. Then before you know it, that same
- 14:55tree is giving you pieces of fruit so big they
- 14:59take two hands to hold, and the birds are making
- 15:02nests in the tree. Even though you see the same
- 15:05thing year after year, somehow each spring it all looks
- 15:09brand new. Our horse brown sugar clop clippity clopped all
- 15:14the way to Meridian City, twenty five miles away. The
- 15:18big city made me nervous, but Daddy actually like we
- 15:22fit right in folks walked fast and dress fancy, and
- 15:26the streets were crowded with automobiles. Most people who go
- 15:31to our church back at home on the mountain would
- 15:34pick out a hat from the general store, or if
- 15:37they were really serious about looking good, they ordered their
- 15:40hats through the Sears catalog. But I knew Daddy wanted
- 15:43to find a hat for Mama like no other. I
- 15:46try not to think about how we could afford that.
- 15:51Mama was always talking about how poor we were, but
- 15:54whenever she started in, Daddy would practically pick Mama up
- 15:57with one arm and grab a couple of us kids
- 16:00with the other and say, look how rich we are.
- 16:03I feel like I'm the richest man in the world.
- 16:07We went directly to a place called the Millinery Shop,
- 16:11which Jaddy says is a fancy way to say women's hats.
- 16:15You have to be a millionaire to shop here, he said, chuckling.
- 16:21The hats in that store came in all shapes, sizes, colors,
- 16:24and fashionable tastes. Tall hats and cone hats, square hats
- 16:29and beanie hats. Daddy and I started at one end
- 16:32of the store and worked our way around. I saw
- 16:36all manner of geographic wonderment, hats that looked like volcanoes erupting,
- 16:40and fruit gardens to rival Eden. My daddy was a
- 16:43very careful shopper and tried on lots of hats. I
- 16:47tried them on, too. Daddy even tried on the ugly ones.
- 16:51That's just so to know what I don't like, he said.
- 16:55There was a moment when I thought he was going
- 16:56to buy this hat that would have sat clumsy as
- 16:59a washer machine on top of Mama's head. There was
- 17:02even a tag on that ugly hat that said price reduced,
- 17:07and I held my breath while Daddy tried it on,
- 17:10but he knew it was not good enough for Mama.
- 17:13Then I happened to look up and see a hat
- 17:15sitting all by itself up on top of a glass
- 17:19display case. The store owner brought over a ladder to
- 17:22bring it down. The hat was straighted with lace and
- 17:25netting and had both fruit and flowers grown on it
- 17:29like a fancy garden, and nestled in the bed of
- 17:32leaves were four little speckled eggs. My daddy had hands
- 17:36like bread bag too long, but he handled that hat
- 17:39as if the delicate eggs on it might actually break.
- 17:43How much is it? I asked. The store owner raised
- 17:47his eyebrows but didn't say a word. There was a
- 17:50tag on a string attached to the hat, and he
- 17:53just turned it over to us. Have a look at
- 17:55the price. Daddy pucker's lips to a low whistle. Is
- 17:59this it's the one candy? I nodded. Well, then, I
- 18:03always say nothing is too good for your mama. A
- 18:06very good choice, indeed, said the store owner, and Dady
- 18:11shook hands with him. Then the store owner shook hands
- 18:14with me, and then I shook hands with Daddy. The
- 18:17store owner wrapped up the hat, and Dady and I
- 18:19started the lawn ride home. Mama's new hat on the
- 18:23seat beside us, the prettiest hat and of Meridian City.
- 18:27We couldn't wait to show it to Mama, and I
- 18:30begged Brown Sugar to please try going just a bit faster.
- 18:35Clippity clop clop clop. We saw the look on Mama's
- 18:39face as soon as we got home, but it wasn't
- 18:42the happy look we had been expecting. She had been
- 18:44working in the kitchen making cakes for Easter, and so
- 18:48she washed up while we stood there with a new hat.
- 18:51But she dried off her hands slowly before she came
- 18:53over to sea. Don't you like it, I asked. I
- 18:58think she did like it. In fact, I think she
- 19:00fell in love with it the moment she sought. But
- 19:03she said, I had that beautiful cost way too much
- 19:07money for things we're needing. Worse. You need to take
- 19:10it back to the store and get your money back, Caman.
- 19:14And then she went back to her baking and didn't
- 19:16look at the hat anymore, almost as if she didn't
- 19:18want to get attached to something she knew she shouldn't keep.
- 19:22I was waiting for Daddy to make it all better.
- 19:25I was waiting for him to grab u saw and
- 19:27say how rich we were. But he didn't do that.
- 19:30He didn't get mad or look hurt. None of that
- 19:33I said was whatever you want, Fanny May. He took
- 19:38the hat and hunt it next to his milk delivering
- 19:40cap on the rack near the front door. Then he
- 19:43went into the living room and sat in his big
- 19:45chair near the radio. Daddy went to me and said,
- 19:49don't you worry, Tandy. The next morning, Daddy got up
- 19:54so early he put the Easter Bunny into shame. He
- 19:56had to deliver the milk on Easter, just like any
- 19:59other day. But when I passed by the hat rack,
- 20:03I noticed the cap he always wore was still hanging there.
- 20:06Where's Daddy, I asked, You know, he's doing the milk
- 20:10rout tandy, But he left his cap. It's not like
- 20:14him to forget that, Mama said, and at that moment
- 20:17she and I both know as there was indeed one
- 20:20certain hat missing from the rack. Yes, Daddy delivered all
- 20:25his milk that Easter morning wearing Mama's fine new hat
- 20:28the entire time, those cold, creamy milk bottles tingled against
- 20:33each other like a lot of cheery music. But then
- 20:36the rest of the folks in our parts were just
- 20:38starting to wake up, and they called out to him,
- 20:41fine hat, hayman, My daddy waved back to none finer.
- 20:46When the last bottle was delivered, Daddy pulled up to
- 20:48our house in his wagon. He was still wearing the hat,
- 20:51and Mama came out to meet him. Well, I can't
- 20:54take this hat back to a store now, finging made,
- 20:57Daddy said, it's already been worn. I guess you're gonna
- 21:00have to keep it. Mama put her hands on her
- 21:03hips and said I'm not going to wear that hat
- 21:06to church, Hayming. Everybody's seen it already, But I could
- 21:09see Mama was just tickled, and she let Dady put
- 21:12that hat right directly on her head where it belonged.
- 21:16Then Dady grouped us all together like we were waiting
- 21:19on somebody to take a picture, even though we didn't
- 21:22own a camera. But Daddy said he was taking a
- 21:25picture of us in his memory that he would keep
- 21:27with him forever. Daddy was so proud of us all
- 21:31looking so good that day, but he was most proud
- 21:34of Mama, and she looked right beautiful in that hat
- 21:38of hers. We were practically a parade walking down the road.
- 21:42Daddy was humming an oat song about an Easter bonnet,
- 21:45and sure in a good mood, and everybody we saw
- 21:48on the way admired Mamma's hat. Those eggs look real,
- 21:52Sister Fanny May, said, Miss Sophia Rathbone, Yes they do,
- 21:57don't they. And Mama touched the edges of her hat
- 22:00proudly ate one of this morning. In fact, my Daddy joked,
- 22:06most of the other ladies had solid rock wore new
- 22:09hats too, and it seemed that the ladies who were
- 22:11the biggest hats always sat in the row right directly
- 22:15in front of our family, their heads tilted back with
- 22:17all the weight That Easter was one of an unusually
- 22:21of big hats. Missus Georgia ray Brooks were at a
- 22:25flying saucer ready for takeoff, and Sister Sophia Rathbones resembled
- 22:30a five pound can of coffee a top of her head.
- 22:34Missus Margaret em Modis wore a hat the size of
- 22:37the state of Texas with a long star on it.
- 22:41I couldn't hardly see the choir, what with all the
- 22:44hats blocking my view. Preacher Jerkins got hot with the
- 22:48sermon right away. He was retelling the Easter story like
- 22:53we had never heard it before in his words, and
- 22:55the humming of the choir in the background stirred us
- 22:58so that we were prime for a miracle. There was
- 23:01a garden where no one had ever been laid. The
- 23:05ushers had left the church doors open because it was
- 23:08truly a hot day. The ladies were batting their fans
- 23:12most fervently, and the preacher's voice started boiling, and a
- 23:16bird even flew in from outside and set on the
- 23:19rafters above our heads like it belonged in church too,
- 23:24for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and
- 23:26sat upon it. And just when Preacher Jerkins was sweating
- 23:30the hardest and the ladies fans flapped back and forth
- 23:34the most furious, something surprising happened. One then two of
- 23:40those eggs of Mama's hat started to crack, and the
- 23:44angel said, be not afraid. I was stirring at the
- 23:48back of Mama's head, at her fine new Easter hat
- 23:50with the flowers and fruit and little speckled eggs, and
- 23:54that funny bird flying around her head. Little bits of
- 23:57eggshell were falling down the back of Mama's dead and
- 24:00the angel said, be not afraid. Preacher jerk and shouted again,
- 24:06Uh Mama, I said ssh. Mama said, she was fully
- 24:10into the sermon. I turned to my other side, Daddy,
- 24:14I said ssh, Tandy, And people believed, or they didn't believe.
- 24:19By then enough people around us noticed that Mama's hat
- 24:22was acting up, and they started nudging each other. The
- 24:25eggs were hatching right off of Mama's hat. Even Preacher
- 24:29Jerkin stopped his sermoncing. Mama finally felt something peculiar going on.
- 24:36She tried to pat the bird from her like a
- 24:39pesky fly. The preacher pointed to her from the pulpit,
- 24:43a big white finger, sister, Fannie, may don't move. A
- 24:47miracle is taking place by now. The baby words were
- 24:50tapping their heads against their shells, and the mother bird
- 24:54had landed on top of the hat and was helping
- 24:56them with the rest of the job. It's a miracle,
- 25:00the preacher. A miracle, repeated, Daddy, miracle, miracle, miracle. The
- 25:05rest of the church echoed. Then the mother birds settled
- 25:08down atop mama's hat and started tending to her babies.
- 25:12There was much halleluj in praise the Lord. After that,
- 25:16the choir sang and the birds sang, and Mama looked
- 25:19proud because she was a part of this miracle. Doves
- 25:23like all through the Old Testament, but this was the
- 25:27first startling that made an appearance in church. Mama said
- 25:30it reminded her kind of like a true meaning of Easter,
- 25:33because it's time for believing in miracles. New life is
- 25:37such a pretty little thing, And now here were four
- 25:40tiny birds, their eyes still closed, trusting their mama would
- 25:44take care of them no matter what. Mama carried that
- 25:47hat home carefully, the mother bird flying alongside of her,
- 25:51and all the ladies from her church trooping behind like
- 25:54that were on their way to galilee. When we got home,
- 25:58Mama made Daddy get the ladder and put it up
- 26:01against the tallest apple tree. Then Mama climbed all the
- 26:05way up herself. My Mama could do anything and place
- 26:08that hat with the family of birds, and it's snugly
- 26:11against the branches where the song could warm their backs
- 26:16and no cat would catch them. At first, I was
- 26:18a little disappointed that we weren't going to see her
- 26:21wearing that fine new Easter hat anymore. But then I
- 26:24thought about how the hat would keep those baby birds
- 26:26safe and protected the rest of the spring, till they
- 26:30were ready to fly out on their own. Mama said,
- 26:33you made a very good choice. Indeed, Daddy winked at me.
- 26:37We never figured out exactly how real bird eggs wound
- 26:40up and Mama's find new Easter hat. As Mama said,
- 26:44miracles aren't ours to figure out. Mama's hat stayed there
- 26:48a long time. We had beautiful music the rest of
- 26:51that spring. The next spring another family hatch there, and
- 26:55the spring after that the starlings and finches and thrushes
- 26:58and redtail wol rblers took what was left of the decorations.
- 27:03The other birds pulled threads out one at a time
- 27:06and flew off to make their nest, until you couldn't
- 27:09see anything in the tree anymore that even looked like
- 27:12you could have been part of a hat, except maybe
- 27:14you could imagine long, wispy threads floating in and out
- 27:17of the highest branches and winding around the apple blossoms.
- 27:22But all that summerre in between, when you could still
- 27:24see the hat up there, Daddy and me would go
- 27:27out on the front porch swing late in the day.
- 27:30Sometimes folks would pass by on the street and wave,
- 27:33and they pointed up at the apple tree. Fine hat, haymon,
- 27:36they said, none finer, replied Daddy, and that was true.
