- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday, the start of
- 0:14a new week. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:16It is the 7th of October and it's great to have your company
- 0:21as we are going to continue reading through this fascinating
- 0:25story of God's people being allowed to return to their
- 0:28country and rebuild their temple and their society in the Old
- 0:33City of Jerusalem. Now this couple of books, Ezra
- 0:36and Nehemiah, is often treated as one kind of extended book,
- 0:40extended work. And so this week we will finish
- 0:43the the last three chapters of Ezra and then begin reading
- 0:46through the story of Nehemiah. This is all the same story, the
- 0:50same narrative with the same people telling of this amazing
- 0:54time where thanks to some bureaucratic policy change, the
- 0:59leaders of the Empire decided that they would be happy for
- 1:02people to return to their original homeland and they would
- 1:05support them rekindling their original religions and that they
- 1:09would be kind of easier to rule if they lived in their space,
- 1:12practising their religions etcetera.
- 1:15And today we will hear about a second lot of Jewish people who
- 1:19returned to Jerusalem, and you might think, why wouldn't they
- 1:22all have gone back with the original 50,000?
- 1:26So many people had made quite good lives for themselves during
- 1:29their exile in Babylon, and they had been able to practise
- 1:34commerce and farm and trade. So for some people, it took a
- 1:38little while longer to wrap up their affairs and decide to go
- 1:41back to their homeland with everyone else.
- 1:44And so that is the story that we are going to pick up today as we
- 1:47hear about Ezra and his cohort who returned to their promised
- 1:52land. So join me friends, as we read
- 1:55together this story in Ezra chapter 8.
- 2:09Here is the list of the family leaders and the genealogies of

- 2:27a descendant of Shekinah. From the family of Pirosh
- 2:32Zechariah and 150 other men were registered.
- 2:35From the family of Payhath Moab Aaliyah Hoenai, son of Jehiah
- 2:41and 200 other men. From the family of Zatu

- 2:53men. From the family of Elam

- 3:00From the family of Shephatiyah Zebediah, son of Michael and 80
- 3:04other men. From the family of Joab,

- 3:32came later, Alypholette, Jul, Shamaya and 60 other men.
- 3:38From the family of Bigvi, Uthai, Zakah and 70 other men.
- 3:45I assembled the Exiles at the Ahava Canal and we camped there
- 3:49for three days while I went over the lists of the people and the
- 3:52priests who had arrived. I found that not one Levite had
- 3:56volunteered to come along, so I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemi,
- 4:02Elnathan, Jarab, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshalam,
- 4:08who were leaders of the people. I also sent for Joyarib and
- 4:12Elnathan, who were men of discernment.
- 4:15I sent them to Ido, the leader of the Levites at Casafia, to
- 4:20ask him and his relatives and the Temple servants to send us
- 4:23ministers for the Temple of God at Jerusalem, since the gracious
- 4:28hand of our God was on us. They sent to us a man named
- 4:31Sherabaya along with eighteen of his sons and brothers.
- 4:36He was a very astute man and a descendant of Mali, who was a
- 4:40descendant of Levi, son of Israel.
- 4:43They also sent Hashabaya, together with Joshiah from the
- 4:47descendants of Murari and 20 of his sons and brothers and 220
- 4:53temple servants. The temple servants were
- 4:56assistants to the Levites, a group of temple workers first
- 5:00instituted by King David and his officials.
- 5:03They were all listed by name. And there by the Ahava Canal, I
- 5:08gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before
- 5:12our God. We prayed that He would give us
- 5:15a safe journey and protect us, our children and our goods as we
- 5:19travelled. For I was ashamed to ask the
- 5:21King for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us
- 5:24from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the King,
- 5:29our God's hand of protection is on all who worship him.
- 5:33But his fierce anger rages against those who abandoned him.
- 5:37So he fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take
- 5:41care of us, and he heard our prayer.
- 5:45I appointed 12 leaders of the priests, Shareabaya Hashabaya
- 5:50and 10 other priests to be in charge of transporting the
- 5:53silver, the gold, the gold bowls and the other items that the
- 5:57king, his council, his officials and all the people of Israel had
- 6:01presented for the Temple of God. I weighed the treasure as I gave
- 6:05it to them and found the totals to be as follows. 24 tonnes of
- 6:10silver. 7500 lbs of silver articles. 7500 lbs of gold. 20
- 6:19gold bowls equal in value to 1000 gold coins. 2 fine articles
- 6:25of polished bronze, as precious as gold.
- 6:29And I said to the priests, You and these treasures have been
- 6:32set apart as holy to the Lord. This silver and gold is a
- 6:37voluntary offering to the Lord, the God of our ancestors.
- 6:41Guard these treasures well until you present them to the leading
- 6:45priests, the Levites, and the leaders of Israel who will weigh
- 6:48them at the store rooms of the Lord's temple in Jerusalem.
- 6:52So the priests and the Levis accepted the task of
- 6:55transporting these treasures of silver and gold to the temple of
- 6:59our God in Jerusalem. We broke camp at the Ahava Canal
- 7:04on April 19th and started off to Jerusalem.
- 7:08Also, the gracious hand of our God protected us and saved us
- 7:12from enemies and bandits along the way.
- 7:15So we arrived safely in Jerusalem, where we rested for
- 7:19three days. On the 4th day after our
- 7:22arrival, the silver, gold and other valuables were weighed at
- 7:26the temple of our God and entrusted to Miramoth, son of
- 7:29Uriah the priest, and to Eliezar, son of Phineas, along
- 7:34with Josebad son of Jeshua, and Noadiah son of Binuwai, both of
- 7:39whom were Levites. Everything was accounted for by
- 7:42number and weight, and the total weight was officially recorded.
- 7:47Then the Exiles who had come out of captivity sacrificed burnt
- 7:51offerings to the God of Israel. They presented 12 bulls for all
- 7:56the people of Israel, as well as 96 Rams and 77 male lambs.
- 8:02They also offered 12 male goats as a sin offering.
- 8:06All this was given as a burnt offering to the Lord.
- 8:09The King's decrees were delivered to his highest offices
- 8:13and the governors of the province West of the Euphrates
- 8:15River who then Co operated by supporting the people and the
- 8:20temple of God. Lord you are amazing.
- 8:35In you is everything you will ever need.
- 8:38You don't need us to worship you or to be in relationship with
- 8:42you, but that is what your heart longs for.
- 8:46You have made us to be in relationship with you, and here
- 8:50we see this story of you journeying with your people,
- 8:55taking them back to their homeland so that they can
- 8:58finally be at peace in the place that you gave them so that they
- 9:03can rebuild a temple and worship you Well.
- 9:08Thank you for caring for your people.
- 9:11Thank You that our needs are not lost on you and that despite how
- 9:16glorious and magnificent you are, you care for us in all of
- 9:20these ways. Our Lord, we reflect on all of
- 9:24the ways every day that You love us and hold us and provide for
- 9:29us. Completely unnecessary, but yet
- 9:32you still choose to do it. We are so grateful that in your
- 9:38magnificence you still choose to love us and to provide for us
- 9:43and to care for us. We are so grateful and we are
- 9:48just so delighted to be your people because you are a kind
- 9:53and glorious God and we lift you up and we praise you and we love
- 9:58you. And it's only through Jesus that
- 10:01we're able to do all these things in whose name we pray.
- 10:05Amen.
