- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Episode seventy already — we've come a long way. Luna: I know, Lucas, it's amazing. I feel like I can actually say things now. What are we learning today? Lucas: Today we're tackling the present tense of regular verbs. You know, how to say I play, you play, he plays — that kind of thing. Luna: Oh, conjugation. I've heard it's important. But it sounds a little scary. Lucas: It's not scary at all, I promise. We'll take it step by step. And you know what? If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with German, we'd love your support. We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's really cool that we can learn without interruptions. Okay, so how do we start with verbs? Lucas: Let's take the verb spielen, which means to play. In German, the infinitive ends in -en. To conjugate, we drop the -en and add endings. Luna: Drop the -en and add endings. Sounds like a recipe. Lucas: Exactly. For ich, we add -e. So ich spiele — I play. Say it with me: ich spiele. Luna: Ich spiele. Lucas: Perfect. For du, we add -st. So du spielst — you play. Try it: du spielst. Luna: Du spielst. That was easier than I thought. Lucas: Now for er, sie, es — he, she, it — we add -t. So er spielt — he plays. Say it: er spielt. Luna: Er spielt. So it's spiele, spielst, spielt. Lucas: You've got it. And for wir, we add -en, same as the infinitive. Wir spielen — we play. Say it: wir spielen. Luna: Wir spielen. That one's easy. Lucas: Let's do a tiny scene. Imagine you and I are playing chess. I say: Ich spiele Schach. You say: Du spielst Schach. He says — well, there's no he, but if there were: Er spielt Schach. And together: Wir spielen Schach. Luna: Ich spiele Schach. Du spielst Schach. Er spielt Schach. Wir spielen Schach. Lucas: Beautiful. Now let's try another verb: kommen, to come. Ich komme — I come. Say it: ich komme. Luna: Ich komme. Lucas: Du kommst — you come. Say it: du kommst. Luna: Du kommst. That one's a little tricky with the double m. Lucas: But you said it fine. Er kommt — he comes. Er kommt. Luna: Er kommt. Lucas: And wir kommen — we come. Wir kommen. Luna: Wir kommen. Lucas: Now let's put them together. I'll say a sentence, you repeat. Ich komme aus Berlin. I come from Berlin. Luna: Ich komme aus Berlin. Lucas: Du kommst aus Berlin. You come from Berlin. Luna: Du kommst aus Berlin. Lucas: Er kommt aus Berlin. He comes from Berlin. Luna: Er kommt aus Berlin. Lucas: Wir kommen aus Berlin. We come from Berlin. Luna: Wir kommen aus Berlin. This is really sticking. Lucas: Let's do a quick review of all six phrases we learned today. Repeat after me: ich spiele. Luna: Ich spiele. Lucas: du spielst. Luna: Du spielst. Lucas: er spielt. Luna: Er spielt. Lucas: wir spielen. Luna: Wir spielen. Lucas: ich komme. Luna: Ich komme. Lucas: du kommst. Luna: Du kommst. Lucas: You did great, Luna. Now you can conjugate regular verbs in the present tense. Practice these with your own verbs — just remember the endings: -e, -st, -t, -en. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like I can actually build sentences now. See you next time! Lucas: Practice these till we chat again. This is Learn German with Fexingo. Bye!
