- 0:41ten Miler which took place on Sunday with lots of folks and athletes taking part.
- 0:51We've got a report on a very very special, unique event that took
- 0:54place on Monday evening at the Three Hills. And we've got a special guest
- 1:03in the show. We've got Terry Hardy from the Folks and Indoor Bowls Club
- 1:07and he's going to be telling us about a team from the Indoor Bowls Club
- 1:11who've made their way to the quarter finals of a national club Unfortunately, our
- 1:17other guest, Josh Kennedy, couldn't make it today. Something cropped up,
- 1:21so we understand that, so we're hoping to get him in next week.
- 1:30In the meantime, let's listen to a bit of Billy Ocean and some local
- 1:34music. Local music there, Lenny, and the way down on Moscow,
- 1:49all the way from Folks In to Moscow, because that's a long way.
- 1:53Anyway, Today this is Kevin Day here on Sports Show and one oh five
- 1:56point nine and we're doing We've just got Terry Hardy back in the studio from
- 2:00the Folks and Indoor Bowls Club. Hello, Terry, Okay, thanks for
- 2:04having me back. Okay, Well, it wasn't so long ago. I've
- 2:07looked it up. It was back in October you came in and we're going
- 2:10to come on to why you're in today. But last time you came in,
- 2:15we were talking about the open day. Now, how did that go?
- 2:17What an amazing success. I mean we even we even had Missus Ferrick
- 2:23come in as well to have a little try. Absolutely brilliant. We had
- 2:28some eighty five people come through the doors on that day, which is a
- 2:32huge amount of people. Yeah, yeah, and I believe there's somebody from
- 2:35your organization here who actually kind of hopefully enjoyed themselves. Yeah. No,
- 2:39as we said before, we had to go and my ball ended up in
- 2:43Morrison's I think, yeah, yeah, or the graveyard opposite. Yeah,
- 2:49but else is that up? The eighty odd people who come through the doors.
- 2:52We actually signed up twenty plus members to cry. Yeah, absolutely amazing
- 3:00good numbers. These people have now progressed through their coaching and are out bowling.
- 3:05Are they are wonderful? Yeah, they're smiling, they're happy, they're
- 3:07enjoying it all, saying like most people have our latter years. I watched
- 3:13it, D have done it earlier a long time ago. Yeah, And
- 3:15talking about a latter of years, what sort of age category were they?
- 3:19Were they elderly people with time on their hands or young? No, no,
- 3:22no, there was a great mix of Some of them have brought their
- 3:24grandchildren along, sort of middle aged people as well, and of course some
- 3:29of the over sixties as well. That we you and I might just briefly
- 3:32have gone over in time. I just might make that yeah, yeah,
- 3:36right, okay, So that's good for the club, and that obviously word
- 3:38is going to get out and there'll be a knock on the face hopefully.
- 3:42Yeah. And we're still run regular coaching sessions on a Wednesday lunchtime twelve o'clock.
- 3:46If any of your listeners out there still fancy coming to go but they
- 3:51haven't been able to get yet. We're there every Wednesday, lunchtime, twelve
- 3:55o'clock. Just turn up with some trainers and we'll give you a guar of
- 3:59it. Excellent, right, Terry. Now the reason we called you in
- 4:02today that I picked up that one of your teams has made the quarter finals
- 4:09of a national cup. Is that right? Yeah? Absolutely amazing. All
- 4:13credits to these guys, you know, still playing a hot, good competitive
- 4:17some of them eighty five years old. I think one of the oldest ones,
- 4:19although you'd never know it, he looks as fit as a butcher's dog.
- 4:25Yeah, they play. They're playing this coming Saturday in a trophy called
- 4:29the Denny Cup. The Denny Cuppa has been running since nineteen thirty three.
- 4:33It's a national tournament and this year we've had one hundred and eighty three clubs
- 4:40enter this tournament up and down the country, and as you said earlier,
- 4:45they're through to the last day. How good is that for our club?
- 4:46Yeah? Yeah, yeah, Because anything that happens in folks and sport wise,
- 4:51they've got a disadvantage that the the captive area, the captive audience isn't
- 4:57isn't that great? Because we've got to sea on one side, haven't we?
- 5:00So we lose any sort of chance of getting any value there. Yeah,
- 5:03So anything that happens like that down here, it must be they must
- 5:08be really making lovely noises down at the club. Yeah, absolutely, and
- 5:11it's renowned in the air. Has been such a great club anyway. Yeah,
- 5:15great coaching, Oh I'm the coach. I think great coaching, great
- 5:17facilities, licensed restaurant, licensed bar, you name it, it's got it.
- 5:23It's a fantastic venue. You know yourself, you've been there. It's
- 5:27a wonderful place. The restaurant's got a great reputation for great food. You
- 5:31know it's it's just great for the club. We've we've actually got through to
- 5:36this this quarter final Denny Cup. So how how does this work? Where?
- 5:41Where? Who are your opponents and do you have to travel or do
- 5:45they come to you? Well, our opponents in your next round in this
- 5:48quarter finals is talky talky, Yeah, not exactly on our doorstep. But
- 5:54because there's such a vast distance between the two clubs, what they what they
- 5:59have decided they're going to play on neutral ground halfway between the two clubs,
- 6:02so it lessens a lot of the traveling. So one club makes sense.
- 6:08And like I say, it's on the SAT this coming Saturday to twenty seventh.
- 6:11It's being played in Newbury down the M four at the North Berkshire Bowls
- 6:17Club. So they're all after there that this coming Saturday, four rinks of
- 6:24four men. So there's sixteen guys going down there to play this coming Saturday.
- 6:30Let's hope that they do really well. I know all of them personally.
- 6:33They're a great bunch of blokes. They love playing their bowls and they're
- 6:36pretty damn good too. Yeah, yeah, yeah, So what's the format
- 6:40of sixteen guys going down how's that going to work? Then? Yeah?
- 6:45Okay, So for the uninitiative, yeah, sure, because you say four
- 6:49men, four rinks, but explain that we actually play on four lanes,
- 6:54as it were, and on each lane, if you like it, you
- 6:59have four from each team. So there's eight people, four people playing against
- 7:03each other, so eight per per per lane if you like, and there's
- 7:09four of those and basically the winner. We add up all the scores at
- 7:14the end of the game off of all of those four lanes or rinks or
- 7:18whatever you want to call them, and whoever scores the highest total aggregate score
- 7:24are the winners. And how many How many times do you actually bowl them?
- 7:27Is how many games you play? Yep, it's up and down in
- 7:30effect, up and down the rinks twenty one times. Really, so it's
- 7:32a long game. It will probably last three to three and a half hours
- 7:36really, Yeah, yeah, okay, so that is that's quite It's quite
- 7:43a long time on your feet, isn't it. I mean, and when
- 7:45you're focusing concentrating on your game and you're up and down. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:48but it's I mean, it's a great game, you know me,
- 7:50keV. Yeah, I love I love the game. I love everything about
- 7:55it and I will always do everything I can to promote it. Yeah,
- 7:59it's think that a lot of people out there are missing out on yeah,
- 8:03not playing this wonderful game. Right, And what sort of time of day
- 8:07Newbury? What's that? A couple of three hours? Perhaps it's about two
- 8:11and a quarter hours, two and a half hours, But a lot of
- 8:13them are going up the night before and staying over because it's it's I think
- 8:16it's a ten o'clock start, eleven o'clock start, and it's a long way
- 8:22to go. With any problems with traveling in the suchive, you've got to
- 8:26go around first, Yeah, so it could be in trouble all right,
- 8:30and will there be I don't know if if the technology has reached the Indoor
- 8:33Bowls Club. Is there any feedbacks who we can find out how they're getting
- 8:37on. I don't think that's available. I'm afraid we're still on steam down.
- 8:43Yeah, we haven't quite got electric yet. No, No, I'm
- 8:45sure there'd be little phone calls now and then yeah, yeah, let me
- 8:48be sure you'll get the answer by the end of By the end of the
- 8:52day, I'll personally let you know how it all went. And who knows.
- 8:54Let's hope it's a successful story for and we get through to the semi
- 8:58finals. We've never got this far before. The best we've ever done has
- 9:03got through to the semi finals of the plate competition, which is for the
- 9:07first round losers, and that's then ninety clubs participating in that. But to
- 9:13get this far this time, this could be it. This could be really
- 9:18something special for the club, and not only that, for the club,
- 9:20for Kent as well on there and for the area and for your club and
- 9:24for the membership and everything. Now you said about having two different no meeting
- 9:30in the middle for the competition. But do we know yet if the finalists
- 9:37are like, you know, five hundred miles apart, will they meet in
- 9:41the middle or is there a set venue that they go once again, because
- 9:45it's probably going to be you know, we're down to eight in the whole
- 9:48country. It could be anywhere, yeah, where at all. So the
- 9:52same parameters will be put in place so to lessen the traveling for one club
- 9:58or the other, because what normally happens here is all the time, it's
- 10:01fairly local ish. We played two lanes or rinks at home, and we
- 10:07played two lanes or rinks away. I see. But because we're up at
- 10:11this level now to say the traveling forever, you know, for some people
- 10:16it's it's got to be a little bit more low. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:20In the last round we played against Eastbourne, so so two of our four
- 10:26players, so eight of them went down to Eastbourne and eight of the east
- 10:30Eastbourne players come up to folks to playing that. But on this occasion it's
- 10:33going to be slightly different, yeah too. Well, And of course you
- 10:37won't know anything about this club talk ki, I don't suppose you've ever played
- 10:39them before. Got any secret spies gone on? I've heard so far,
- 10:46whereas we did know a bit about Eastbourne because they some of the Eastbourne players
- 10:50come to Folkston our Easter tournament and they play our Easter tournament, so some
- 10:54of them know the folks and players and we indeed there's a couple of folks
- 11:00and players who play Eastbourne now. So bowls is like that. It's like
- 11:03a real big family of people who all just want to say, men's to
- 11:07enjoy the bowling. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. And one question
- 11:11that I must ask you, it's probably obvious to you, is it only
- 11:13men that are going down? Is it a men's men's game in this particular
- 11:18one, Yes, but there's other national mixed trophies and National ladies trophies as
- 11:24well. But this year the men seem to have done exceptionally well. And
- 11:28you know, here we are, let's fingers crossed for this coming Saturday.
- 11:31Yeah. I've been doing a bit at homework about this Denny Cup and it's
- 11:35one of those things that's kind of well, it is definitely under the radar.
- 11:39I've never heard of it till I went in the other day and spoke
- 11:41to your chairman. And it goes back, it goes back years, doesn't
- 11:45it nineteen thirty three? Indeed does it? You know, you must remember
- 11:48it. Nineteen thirty three. I was on the radio then. It was
- 11:54set up by a chap called Leonard Denny and he was the president of the
- 12:00Middle Sex Outdoor Bowling Association and he thought what a great idea would be to
- 12:05have a national Bowls competition. And ever since then it's been run up until
- 12:09today, which is you know, nineteen thirty three, seventy eighty odd years.
- 12:15Yeah, yeah, and it's still going strong. It's still well known
- 12:18throughout the country and I like the idea that I think it's very ahead of
- 12:22its time. It's like two venues, you know, or one team goes
- 12:26down home and away, so you're not you know, you're not all in
- 12:28each other's faces and you're probably wondering, you know, you're playing your own
- 12:31game and wondering how your mate's getting on down. Absolutely, yeah. But
- 12:35what we normally do when we play these home and away games we always have
- 12:39these days. It's a lot easier obviously, would tell it. You know,
- 12:41mobile phone contacts. We always have somebody keeping us abreast of what's going
- 12:46on at the other rinks as well. So we can and that will be
- 12:48put on our board as well. Yeah, yeah, so we can continually
- 12:50know how we're doing comparatively home and away. Yeah excellent. But like I
- 12:56say, yeah, that's cutting edge stuff for nineteen thirty three. Yeah,
- 12:58yeah, it was. Hell did they travel in those days? Yes?
- 13:01Right, yeah, I've been looking down actually some of the teams that are
- 13:05on that bit of paper and the two competitors. Oh, there's a lot
- 13:09of mileage in between the two teams. Yeah, certainly is Yeah. When
- 13:13Margate played thinking about nineteen thirty seven or eight against someone from absolutely miles away.
- 13:20Oh yeah, yeah. When you have a look at burning Birmingham to
- 13:24Cambridge, yeah, you know wow, and that was in nineteen forty nine.
- 13:30Yeah, how did they travel? I mean it's a lot easier now,
- 13:33of course, especially forty nine just after the war, because it stopped
- 13:35during the war, isn't it? Absolutely Eli of Eli to Nottingham. Yeah,
- 13:39for example, a lot easier now, of course. Yeah. But
- 13:41it is top and top and bottom of the country certainly. Okay, but
- 13:46a very well supported club. Great okay, Terry, Now before we go,
- 13:50we can't let you go without just the recapping. How people can get
- 13:54involved. They've heard this, they've they've heard of the open day was a
- 13:58success. How can they involved and come down and tell us some dates and
- 14:01times? Yeah? Sure, As I said, some people couldn't come to
- 14:05our open day. But if you're still interested in just to come along and
- 14:09have a go. You know, there's no commitment to this. All we
- 14:13do. All you need is a spare pair of trainers that you can change
- 14:16into. We provide elder kit. Come down on a Wednesday lunchtime for the
- 14:22next six weeks because then it all changes a little bit because we're going to
- 14:26summer and come down, introduce yourself that you want to have a go at
- 14:31bowling. Never done it before, or you might have done a few years
- 14:33ago, and you'd like to come back, and you'll be ushered into the
- 14:37bolts Hall and it's all free, you don't have to pay for it.
- 14:41And the coaches, a team of coaches normally four to six of us will
- 14:45be there to lead you through it and give you some good basic information.
- 14:50So it's every Wednesday for the next six weeks. Turn up about quarters of
- 14:54twelve and you'll be there for a couple of hours. Okay, excellent Terry
- 14:58thank you so much for coming in. This has been a great st I
- 15:00love promoting bowls, you know, because it's one that is just kind of
- 15:03doesn't get enough enough promotion, does it. And we've had some good stories
- 15:07come out of this year in the plast And I might even pop down on
- 15:11Saturday and have a little look at that board, see how they get in
- 15:13on. Yeah, well it won't be at home. It won't be a
- 15:16homeless Saturday because we haven't got a game at home thiss, so won't be
- 15:18down there, but I'll have a look. I can get you a contact.
- 15:24I'll pop him for a pint anyway, and someone to tell me I'm
- 15:28sure Terry, thank you so much once again. And here's a little song
- 15:31that I think you might enjoy it. Two great tracks there Tennessee c I'm
- 15:39Not in Love and David Bowie's darm and style Man. Rather. I know
- 15:46Terry, our guest, loves David Bowie, so we found that song for
- 15:50him. And I do have to have a little chuckle when I see David
- 15:52Bowie because I remember back in the day when only fools and Horses were on
- 15:58and they were down the pub and someone said, oh, they've got a
- 16:02David David Barry tribute at coming in. It's called Ziggy Sawdust. Okay,
- 16:07let's get back to what we know best sport and football news now. Well,
- 16:11there isn't much for last Saturday as the Hive and Hawkins matches were postponed
- 16:15due to frozen pitches. Folks in Victor, however, traveled to North London
- 16:19where they played Harring Burrow Harrying gay Burrough. Sorry, and there was a
- 16:25great commentary of the the whole game, sorry, not just the second half,
- 16:29the whole game by Charlie Prescott and Ad Dowks, who was in last
- 16:33week. He's like the brains behind Folks in Victor radio and Charlie helps him
- 16:40out and Charlie was our man on the spot. And so just have a
- 16:44little listen to this. You join me from Cole's Park Stadium where Folks and
- 16:47It's traveled to take on Harring Gaye Bura. All the games around us are
- 16:51off but there was no ice left on the pitch and an artificial surface,
- 16:53so the game was given the green light to go ahead. Chris Thesson,
- 16:57you I missed out on this one for injury, so there was a slight
- 17:00reshuffle in the back line for folksing the Victor. Kane Penn moved back across
- 17:03the right wing back and Toby Byron made his return from injury, starting the
- 17:07game at left back. Andy Dury his strengthened the squad in the week and
- 17:11all three signings came onto the bench. Dean Rants, Eddie Also and Louis
- 17:15Collins were all eager to make their folks And debuts, but Paron Gaye,
- 17:18not playing a game for a week and a half, Folks and started the
- 17:22game the more lively for two teams. Toby Byron early on had lots of
- 17:25space to drive into from the left hand side, we couldn't quite make the
- 17:29most of it. The only real chance for the first half came for Folks
- 17:32and the Victor. Scott Heard swung in a corner from the left hand side.
- 17:34It flicked on and the near post by Jake Goodman and day Smith came
- 17:37charging in at the far players with a free running goal. We couldn't quite
- 17:41direct the ball goals and it went sailing over the bar. So the two
- 17:44teams headed in at halftime Neil neil. But two teams were very evenly matched
- 17:48in the second half being in the game fizzled out. The only real talking
- 17:51point was a decision to give Jason freching Out a yellow card. The balls
- 17:55played over the top by the Harringayala fence and a striker. He brought it
- 17:57down quickly bearing in our goal. They just caught his man. They looked
- 18:02like he was three on goal with the referee toosters. They finished his pocket
- 18:04and only are all Jason Elacard so focusing the Victor scene, so maybe get
- 18:07away one a little new signings. Louis Collins, Dean Rants and Eddie also
- 18:14all made their debutes in the second half, facing me to travel on Tuesday
- 18:18to Cave Islands. They to continue their unbeaten round to twenty twenty four under
- 18:22ADDI jury. Charlie Prescott reported from Cole's Park, whereas Harry Gay Burrow nil
- 18:26focusing Victor Niler. A big thank you to Charlie there for that report.
- 18:30There was one thing, one quote actually during that game where you knew you
- 18:34were literally that are listening to grassroots football and Charlie said, oops, it
- 18:40looks like they're going to need another ball that that one's gone over into the
- 18:42allotments. So that did make me chuckle. Now that trip to Canvy Tuesday
- 18:48evening it was another Worldway fixture trip to Canvy Island at the Movie Star Stadium,
- 18:56and I'll tell you a little bit about that in a minute in Essex
- 18:57where it finished two to one to Canvy, unfortunately not the result they wanted,
- 19:03especially after a Jason Friggenager hit the crossbar in the last minute. Moving
- 19:07on this Saturday, it's a home game against carl Shulton Athletics where they hoped
- 19:11to pick up another three points. So no game four Hythe on Saturday.
- 19:18But Tuesday the Union they welcomed Sitting Boorn to Reachfield for a Kent Senior Cup
- 19:22second round. High So sit back and listen to this report from a man
- 19:26pitch side, Tom Ellerby. Hythe reached the Kent Senior Cup quarter final on
- 19:30a dump Tuesday night at Reachfield, narrowly beating sitting Born two to one.
- 19:36Hithe managed to score the first with nine minutes remaining in the first half when
- 19:38Cain Philip tapped the ball towards the goal. The keeper got a touch but
- 19:42it trickled in to give High the one nill lead. The visitors scored their
- 19:45equalizer on sixty nine minutes, Gabrielle Pilkowski swung a ball into the box and
- 19:51the byline before it was guided in by the head of Mitchell May. Despite
- 19:53this, it was the Canons that scored the winner, and it came in
- 19:56the final minute of normal time as Jared Trustadin sent a free k Sickens to
- 20:00the box. There was a melee in the area before the ball was tapped
- 20:03in by substitute Jaykenbury. The full time whistle blue to mark Hive's first winner
- 20:07of twenty twenty four. They will now go on to play Chathamtown in the
- 20:11quarter final of the competition. Hi have a whole host of league games to
- 20:15think about first. Steve Wat's men traveled to seven Oaks Sound next Saturday at
- 20:18three pm, before they host Home Bay on Tuesday thirtieth at reach Field's at
- 20:22seven forty five pm. There go thanks once again Tom for sending in that
- 20:26report and as Tom says, it's back to league action in an away fixture
- 20:30at seven Oaks now. Because of their cup runs, I've only played seven
- 20:34games in the league, whereas some of their opponents have played twelve. So
- 20:37it's going to be a long, tough second half of the season. They
- 20:41are currently eleventh in the table. Only four fixtures out of the eighth survived
- 20:48in the Kent County Premier Division. Unfortunately Hawkins was in the other four.
- 20:52Their game was their game against Idleheill was postponed and you've guessed it frozen pitch.
- 20:59Saturday they try again with a visit to Kent United, which means a
- 21:02trip to Dartford. The Hawks are currently in second place with Hal's AFC equal
- 21:07on points on top as they have a better goal difference and a game in
- 21:10hand. Kent United, by the way, in eighth place. Now,
- 21:15whilst listening to the Invictor game, Charlie every now and then gave us an
- 21:18update on the focusing in Victor Disability Football team's game away at Waltha Mabbe Focus
- 21:25FC. That's where Charlie's brother Jared was involved. And what a game this
- 21:30was too. Now, I contacted Garrant Wilson and he gave me the rundown
- 21:33and this is how it went in. Victor went one kneel down, then
- 21:37two on up at halftime thanks to two goals from Peter Lee. In the
- 21:41second half, they found themselves four to two down, then Peter Lee completed
- 21:45his hat trick, making it four to three, and then they conceded again,
- 21:49losing five three, but the game was by no means over in Victor's
- 21:53fourth goal came from the penalty spot, scored by Billy Hayter, making it
- 21:57five to four. Focus Paul one back to Leeds six to four, being
- 22:02Victor were not finished. Troy Harding outpaced the defense and put one away in
- 22:06the corner of the net, making it six to five with just five minutes
- 22:08left. As the game went into stoppage time, in Victor were awarded a
- 22:12free kick within shooting range of the goal. Billy Hater stepped up and put
- 22:18it in the back of the net, making it six all. Focus kicked
- 22:21off but the ref blue in Victor celebrated as if they was a win.
- 22:25Focus left the field as if it was a defeat, but in fact it
- 22:27was a very exciting drawn game. Man of the match, chosen by the
- 22:32opposition manager, went to hat trick hero Peter Lee. But it just goes
- 22:36to show what determination and what a gutsy side that Garren Wilson has got there.
- 22:41So world unfellas what a great game that must have been now as I
- 22:44said earlier. Canvey Island play their fixtures at the aptly named movie Star Ground.
- 22:52Now I looked it up. Movie Star is like a local independent cinema
- 22:56which is in Canvy Island on the seafront there. Mediately reminded me of this
- 23:00song. When was the last time you heard this one? Love Your Peace
- 23:15Dave's Miller banda joker, Love Love Love, And before that we had our
- 23:26football stadium song movie Star. I don't know. There must have been a
- 23:30one hit wonder and do you know who sung it? Well? I didn't,
- 23:34I had to google it. It was in nineteen seventy five and it
- 23:38was sung by a gentleman called Harpo and no one's ever heard of him again.
- 23:44Right back to the sport now, time for some wheelchair basketball news.
- 23:48The Folks and Arrows made a journey of one hundred and thirty two miles on
- 23:51Saturday to a place called Thatchem in Berkshire to play Top of the Table Thames
- 23:56Valley Kings the Arrows. The Arrows, by the way, are second so
- 24:00specs of a tough game. However, the journey was all well worthwhile as
- 24:03they came home with a smile on their faces after winning fifty three points to
- 24:07twenty four. Now, the long journey prompted me to take a closer look
- 24:11at the teams in the league, which is Division three South of the National
- 24:15League. This consists of seven teams and I was surprised to see how much
- 24:18traveling was involved. So I scrolled down the table and here's what I found.
- 24:23In third place are the Southern Sharks who come from Chichester. That's one
- 24:27hundred and sixty miles. That's a one way trip, and the fourth are
- 24:33Cardiff met Archers two hundred and twenty five miles. Fifth place are Herowood Heat
- 24:37that's near Cambridge one hundred and eighteen miles. The London Titans who play at
- 24:42Stanmore or Bushy depending on what venue they can get, well that's at least
- 24:45one hundred miles. And the Hampshire Harriers who come from Southampton. That's a
- 24:51one way journey of one hundred and forty two miles, so a lot of
- 24:53traveling in there, and they make and the Hampshire Harriers actually make the journey
- 24:59to Folkston for Arrow's next fixture on the seventeenth of February. So if you
- 25:03want to help the Arrows, contact Ben or Becky Potter to see if there
- 25:07are any tables left for the fundraising quiz, which is on this Saturday at
- 25:11the Hawkins Community Center for a seven pm start. Okay, we're going to
- 25:15get back to the music now, and it's time for a bit of a
- 25:18Bruce Springs day in Dancing in the Dark. Bruce Springs Day in Dancing in
- 25:33the Dark. Now, on that note, if you've got a song that
- 25:41immediately reminds you of a sporting venue, a sporting event, then please please
- 25:45get in touch and we'll try and find it in the playlist. You know,
- 25:48it might be a song that you heard the first time you went to
- 25:52a football ground, or it might be a song that you use for your
- 25:55warm up during your run in, could be a song anything sport related,
- 26:00and there's really really sticks in your mind, then please don't hesitate getting touch
- 26:03and we see if it's on our playlist. Okay, so that's nearly coming
- 26:07up to the end of the first hour. In the second hour, unfortunately,
- 26:11our guest Josh Kennedy couldn't make it this morning. He texted me this
- 26:15morning to say it's really really sorry. Something he's cropped up. But these
- 26:18things happen. We understand that. But just briefly, Josh just started a
- 26:25little boxing club down at the Folks and Sports Center and there's a lot of
- 26:29youngsters there, I think the age group six to twelve. I've seen the
- 26:32pictures on his Facebook page and it looks really exciting. It looks like it's
- 26:37getting a great following and it's pretty good and the parents can go along and
- 26:41watch as well. So but in the second half, what have we got.
- 26:45We've got some oh with some park round news, some hockey news.
- 26:52I'm going to do a report on the Canterbury ten and we've got an event
- 26:56that was called Let's Lift the Curfew, which was a lady's own running event
- 27:00about keeping yourself safe in the dark. So taking us up to the news
- 27:06now, we've got decon blue and a bit of dignity. Welcome back to
- 27:25the second hour of the Sports Show. Where have you been? If you're
- 27:29just tuned in, this is Kevin's Sports Very Daily on one of five point
- 27:33nine, and it's my aim to find as many sports locally and get as
- 27:38many news roundups and stories as I can. So if you've got a story
- 27:44that's gone under the radar, any local heroes that you know at your club.
- 27:49The deserve mention. Then please please get in touch. You can catch
- 27:55up with me Kevin Dalley on my Facebook page. Coming up in this hour,
- 28:00we have got We've got some hooky news, You've got some rugby news.
- 28:07We've got a lovely story about an anniversary at the Park Run. We've
- 28:12got to write up about Let's Lift the Curfew, which was a running event
- 28:18for ladies only which was held on Monday at the Three Hills. A bit
- 28:22more about that later. Had a report on the Canterbury ten. Now that
- 28:29was a race that I compared. I was on the mic there. But
- 28:32there were loads and loads of runners from Folkston and around the area and a
- 28:37lot of first time is running as well, So plenty to look forward to
- 28:41in this hour. Don't go away, make that cup of tea can push
- 28:45your feet up. Okay. Signed for a bit of music from Sister Sledge
- 28:53He's the Greatest Dancer. And some local music Vox Deluxe and Broken Melody,
- 29:11So Fast, Local Music Vox Deluxe and Broken Melody, Time Rail where you
- 29:25look at the folks and Optimius Hockey Club. Now last Saturday, three games
- 29:30out of the twelve were cooled off. You've guessed the frozen pitches. Now,
- 29:33all these games are actually in sort of northern Kent, you know Maystone
- 29:37Chatting way that up there, so it must have been a bit colder up
- 29:40there. Bere in mind that all hockey games are played on artificial services,
- 29:44so if they've had a bit of rain and then it freezes, well there's
- 29:48no where they're going to play. Now. The summary of the nine games
- 29:51that went ahead is as follows. They played nine who won, seven,
- 29:55drew, one lost one. Goals four was twenty nine and the goals against
- 30:00was ten, so quite productive weekend now. The men's first eleven beat Herne
- 30:06Bay six nil, the goals being shared about a bit. Will Mead scored
- 30:10twice and the rest came from Josh Clifford, Jamie Miller, Hastings, Harvey
- 30:14Lill and Garrett Llewellen. They all got one each. The men's second team
- 30:18beat Tumbridge Wells five nil. The men's thirds beat University of Kent three nil.
- 30:22The men's fifth drew two all with seven Oaks. That's the seven Oaks
- 30:26seventh teen and the men's sixteen beats seven Oaks eighth to him two to one.
- 30:33The Ladies first eleven beat Woking two to one, keeping them second in
- 30:37the Southeast Premier League, goals coming from Nick Ball and Becky Whyatt. The
- 30:41Seconds lost five nil to Hulcombe, the fourth beat Seven Oaks two to one,
- 30:45and the fifteen beat Faversham seven nil, with Becker Swan grabbing a hat
- 30:48trick. Janet Fuller scored twice and one each from Wendy Blackwell and Hannah Downey.
- 30:53This keeps the fifth team in top spot in the league, six points
- 30:57ahead of the old Williamsony, that's the old Willes to you now. They
- 31:02play them at home next week once again a full week of twelve fixtures.
- 31:07The men's first are at homes at Eastbourne and the Ladies first are away to
- 31:11seven Oaks. So I'm massive thank you once again to Amy there for providing
- 31:15all that information on those reports. Now getting away from sport a bit for
- 31:21the moment. I was watching the Telly last night and I've got to put
- 31:23my hand up. I'm a bit of a heartbeat addict right now. I
- 31:27only like the early ones, the sixties, you know, with Nick rowing.
- 31:33After that, I kind of didn't bother watching them too much. But
- 31:36back in the summer, me and missus Ferrick we actually went up to Heartbeat
- 31:41Country. We took the train from Pickering and the old steam train and got
- 31:45off at the station at aidens Field. They call it Goatland actually, but
- 31:51in the program the Heartbeat, the village is called Aidensfield. We had a
- 31:56pint in the Aidensfield Arms and across the road and led a look at Grips's
- 32:00garage. And it makes you laugh because they used to say, oh,
- 32:05we're in the pub the Adiens Few alarms. We needed a taxi for the
- 32:07station. Well the station is only about two hundred yards away. Anyway.
- 32:12It was really I loved it, I really did. And sitting there last
- 32:15night watching Heartbeat, there's that great link with the sixties music, and then
- 32:21this song on and this song came on and I know you're going to remember
- 32:24it. It's the Rolling Stones and painted black as base there whatever happens to
- 32:59them. I think that they made two songs, didn't they But they were
- 33:00great songs. But they've never heard of them since, have we. Oh?
- 33:05Okay, so let's move on to some park run news. Now,
- 33:07park run lots of lovely stories come from the park run community and this must
- 33:14be one of the best. This report was sent to me by a regular
- 33:16park runner and former guest of the show, Jay Hopkins. Gay Trevellion and
- 33:21Mick Marshall each did their two hundred and fiftieth park Run today. That was
- 33:24last Saturday. They both have friends and family come to the event to celebrate
- 33:29their milestone, and some of the friends they run with the drink coffee with
- 33:32organize the cake. Mick is eighty one and Gavin will be eighty one this
- 33:37month next week, I think so they have over five They have five hundred
- 33:42part runs and currently one hundred and sixty one years between them. Those big
- 33:45numbers were announced at the start of the run and received a massive applause.
- 33:51Mick and Gavin are amazing people, always happy to run with new people and
- 33:54an inspirational example to the rest of us. Mick was at the first ever
- 33:59part run back in twenty fourteen has encouraged lots of friends to join in since
- 34:04Gavin started running in twenty fifteen and has been to twenty four different venues,
- 34:07including some when he's gone back on holiday back to his native South Africa.
- 34:13They are both generous with their time and have done lots of volunteering in various
- 34:16communities in their lives. When it comes to park Run, Gavin has volunteered
- 34:21forty times and Mike fifty seven times, so they helped make sure this brilliant
- 34:25event keeps running. As octogenarian park runners, they were both invited to attend
- 34:30the anniversary run at Bushy Park this summer. They were amongst eighty five listened
- 34:36to this eighty five over eighties who finished that event that week, and Jay
- 34:40finished by saying she feels very lucky to count them as friends. Now that
- 34:45is an amazing story too. Over eighty year old still out there at the
- 34:47park Run. Now, have you ever thought of doing the part run?
- 34:51But hell back, well, this story should really just give nothing but encouragement
- 34:55to take that step. Park Runner is at nine am on the Lees every
- 35:00Saturday. It's free. You just need a barcode so you could tie.
- 35:02Your time can be recorded, but your time really it doesn't matter. It
- 35:07doesn't matter at all if it's just your first one. And as they keep
- 35:09telling me every time I go up there on a Saturday, it's a run,
- 35:13not a race. So please go to parkrun dot org to register and
- 35:17you can run, you can jog, you can walk, you can take
- 35:20your dog, you can take your buggy. It's a really great community and
- 35:24the numbers have grown over the years. We're probably clocking about well around about
- 35:30the three hundred every time. So it's really really and with the summer mumps
- 35:34coming on, it's a good way of getting out of bed on a Saturday
- 35:37morning. Now, this song was another song from the sixties and I was
- 35:42just reminiscing there about my time up in Heartbeat Country. As I say,
- 35:45we took the steam train from Pickering, went through Goatland, which is the
- 35:50village of Adensfield, and then we went on to Whitby at a walk around
- 35:53Whitby and it's amazing how many places that I spotted in Whitby that were actually
- 36:00in the in the Heartbeat series. And it's graz isn't it. When you
- 36:02go somewhere and you think I've seen that on the telly, and then you
- 36:06go home and you watch it again and you say, oh, yeah,
- 36:08we walked past that bit, or walk past that church. There's really really
- 36:13something to you. I like doing that, you know, to go to
- 36:15venues where they've been filming and so you can say yeah, I was there
- 36:19anyway. This song from the sixties is by Edwin Starr. It's called SOS
- 36:22Academy Folston one five point nine FM and online at them Foston dot com ABC
- 36:37all of my hearts from the eighties nineteen eighty two to be precise. Al
- 36:49Right, it's the turn of the Folks and Rugby Club now. The first
- 36:51fifteen lost at home to Westcombe Park by twenty one points to twelve. This
- 36:55lock folsting off top spot being replaced by park House, but there's only one
- 36:59point in it. The Saturday is a way to Vigo, which means a
- 37:02trip to Gravesend. The Seconds game may have been frozen off. I couldn't
- 37:06find a result for that one. This Saturday they're due to play top of
- 37:08the table Rye at home. The Seconds are currently third, so this will
- 37:13be a bit of a tough game. Also, I couldn't find a result
- 37:15for the Thirds. This week they welcome local rivals Dover to Burlington Fields.
- 37:21Dover our second folks on Unfortunately their bottom at a table, so they'll be
- 37:25playing for the bragging rights and for a bit of pride. And finally,
- 37:30sadly, the Ladies lost twenty nine zero That was on Sunday. A Way
- 37:32to a Strong maidstone Side then its game is a Way to Uckfield. On
- 37:37the fourth of February now a unique event called Let's Lift the Curfew took place
- 37:42at the Three Hills on Monday evening, attended by at least seventy a lady
- 37:46runners. This was and I quote for empowering women to take back to the
- 37:51streets and feel confidence to run during the darker evenings. It was organized by
- 37:55Rossie Smith and Jordan Mann of the Sports Trust Juliet's with top coach Katherine O'Connor
- 38:00from the Folks and Running and Athletics Club. Catherine gave advice about warming up
- 38:06and some three Kent Police runners were there giving advice on safety, handing out
- 38:10panic alarms and torches. The main recommendations were wear hi y's vest, don't
- 38:15wear earphones, running brightly lit roads, you could tell someone that you're going
- 38:21out running and so on. You know, some of the things are pretty
- 38:22obvious, but it might need remind him now. The evening consisted of Catherine's
- 38:29advice and warm up and then a fifteen minute jorg in groups of ten or
- 38:32twelve with a run leader around the streets and then back to the Three Hills
- 38:37for a run around the new track, which would be your first time for
- 38:39many of the ladies. Now, the groups were made up of ladies from
- 38:44the Folkston Club, as we said, Dover Road Runners were there, Hawkish
- 38:47Hurricanes, Blister Sisters from Hythe and a group that I've seen around but I
- 38:52didn't know what their name was. They are the Hamro Run Club, which
- 38:55is made up from the Nepalese community, which is really nice to know.
- 39:00They run do their own little thing on a Saturday morning and I'm sure that
- 39:04they joined in. When we did the inaugural opening of the track back in
- 39:07the day, a lot of Nipoalese came along and very fit. They did
- 39:12look too. Now we were talking about Heartbeat and it's got me thinking,
- 39:15you know about places that I've been that's kind of famous places in our country,
- 39:21and certainly one that sprung to mind was Liverpool. Now, a couple
- 39:23of years ago, Missus Ferrett and myself went up to Liverpool. We spent
- 39:27there a long weekend up there and I'd never been to Liverpool. You've got
- 39:30a bear in mind, we live a right bang on the southern coast.
- 39:34We couldn't be further away from Liverpool, and I was in my teen years
- 39:38when I grew up here in some of the early songs. But we took
- 39:44the Magical Mystery tour and there was a commentator presenter giving us the spiel,
- 39:52and we looked at the people, you know, John Lennon's house and Paul
- 39:54McCartney's house, and we went down Penny Lane and then we went to a
- 40:00place which will always stick on my mind called Strawberry Fields. There's a great
- 40:07history to Strawberry Fields, and perhaps go into it another time, but I
- 40:10think the other highlight was taking the ferry across the Mersey and as soon as
- 40:15you started leaving the dock side ferry across the Mersey started playing put the Poor
- 40:20Captain and the crew just absolutely sick of the song. But for us we
- 40:22loved it anyway. One highlight was stopping off at Strawberry Fields and having our
- 40:28picture done by the gate. So have a little listen to this. Let
- 40:42me take you down. Thank you boys. They are trying to get you
- 40:57in the summer mood. It's been miserable lately and it's just been dark and
- 41:01cold, and today's wet, so we need a bit of cheering up beach
- 41:06boys, surfing USA and music and sport go together. That song took me
- 41:10immediately, strangely enough, to broad Stairs Beach now every year had about June
- 41:16time, I think it is. I compare a run or along the seafront
- 41:21there, and they do actually start on the beach on the sand, and
- 41:24they just have to wait till the tide goes out. And it's called the
- 41:29harbor wallbanger, right, remember that, the harbor wallbanger. And what they
- 41:32do They run along the beach from Broadstairs to Ramsgate. Then they have to
- 41:37bang on the wall of the harbor hence harbor Wallbanger, and run back and
- 41:42it is a great day. It's a tough race. I can't remember how
- 41:45long it is, but running in the sand makes it even tougher, you
- 41:49know. But I take my pa stuff, I pointed music out to sea
- 41:53and crank it right up and everybody's having a great day. So music and
- 41:57sport are related. And if you've got a song like that, it might
- 42:00remind you of a sporting event or a venue. And please get in touch.
- 42:05Now switching my attention to the Canterbury teen first of all that was a
- 42:09cold, freezing windy day at last Sunday. Now that saw me up early
- 42:14and the race started at nine o'clock now with the start finished being in two
- 42:17different places caused the course change caused by a course change due to road works.
- 42:23This miant I arrived at six thirty and started setting up in the dark,
- 42:28something I just didn't think about, you know, because to be honest,
- 42:30it didn't start getting light to half past seven. But the start and
- 42:34the finish were in two places, so I had to set the pa up
- 42:36at the start, take it all down then move it to the finish.
- 42:39Now, this is a highly competitive race, attracting nearly twelve hundred runners from
- 42:44a far away as Lothian in Scotland. The first mail back was Cole Gibbons,
- 42:47running for Tunbridge, in a time of fifty three minutes thirty three seconds,
- 42:52and first Lady was Chelsea Baker, who runs for Bristol and West Ac
- 42:55and she finished in fifty eight minutes ten seconds. Strangely enough, they both
- 43:00came first last year, twenty nine runners from the Folks and Running and Athletics
- 43:04Club took part. First runner home for the club was David Tyler, who
- 43:07was six overall in fifty five minutes thirty seven seconds. First lady home was
- 43:12Nicky Goodwin in one hour, nine minutes twenty nine seconds. Two lady runners
- 43:16from the club used it to kickstart their London Marathon training. Former guest to
- 43:21the show, Louisa Eid finished in one hour twenty minutes and two seconds and
- 43:25Autumn richardson one hour forty seven thirty six minutes. They're not forgetting. Despite
- 43:30the course change, it's still a tough, hilly route and well donees go
- 43:36to Tom Saunders, who run his first ever ten miler in one hour fifty
- 43:38three forty three. Seven runners from South Kent Harriers took part. First one
- 43:44home for the Harriers was Kieran Pilcher in one hour fifteen eleven seconds. Melnroyd
- 43:49Powell run with Mel's daughter Keeley, who also run her first ten miler as
- 43:53she prepares for her first London Marathon raising funds for Kids Cancer charity, and
- 43:59she looked really good when she finished as she crossed the line. Special mentions
- 44:02must go to Mandy Punnet, Elis Stir and Henry Cornbill their future challenges see
- 44:07Mandy taking on Ultra now ultra could be any distance over twenty six point two
- 44:13miles with Ellis and Henry running their first ever marathon in London, raising funds
- 44:17for a diabetes charity. All three belong to Beginners to run Us Club in
- 44:22Hythe and you could see the smiles of happiness and achievement on their faces as
- 44:27they cross the line together. Now, big thank you goes out to Glenn
- 44:30Mosley and Nicky Old who are the driving force behind this race, which was
- 44:35hosted by in Victor, East kent Ace, and a donation of which they
- 44:38will make to the local charity De melsa House. Now, the people from
- 44:43Demelza were there. I had a little chat with the lady and they do
- 44:46some great stuff. There's actually three De mels of houses. The nearest one
- 44:50is in Sitting Born. So getting back to the music. Now, time
- 44:53for the Beautiful South and everybody's talking like beautiful South there and everyone's talking.
- 45:07Letting that one fade out a little bit because I just want to say goodbye.
- 45:08Really, I've been talking a bit too much myself this week. Unfortunately,
- 45:14our guest Josh couldn't make it, so we had a bit of extra
- 45:16time on our hands. We're hoping he'll come in next week, and he's
- 45:22organizing of boxing a small academy I suppose you call it. It's a little
- 45:25school for six to twelve year olds to take up boxing. I mean they
- 45:30don't actually get in there and punch it out of each other. It's more
- 45:34about having fun and about getting fit and having a good time. The parents
- 45:37are more than welcome to go along, and it's becoming really successful. So
- 45:42I do hope that Josh can make it next week. So next week,
- 45:46I haven't got any guests for just Josh, I hope, and so I'll
- 45:50be looking out for a guest. If you know somebody that you think might
- 45:52be worthwhile coming in for a chap unsung hero from a sport, then please
- 45:57please let them come in. Okay, this is Kevin Daley and now I've
- 46:00been spoken too much, so I've only got a little bit of blondie to
- 46:04play out with. But it's going to be a sogie all weekend, so
- 46:07stays right and I catch all next time.
