- 0:15Welcome everybody to episode four of Cards and Categories. I might Collard here from
- 0:20Radsball and joined once again and as always by Jeremy brew Or, also from
- 0:25Radsball. Are you doing today? But I'm doing well today? How about
- 0:28yourself? Or is it a nice cool night there in Chicago Land? Yeah?
- 0:34Yeah, I finally cooled off a little bit that the under something degree
- 0:38heat broke a little bit. And still watering the tomatoes every day, but
- 0:42like twice every day, but like it's it's been all right and now it's
- 0:47it's a Kada season. I don't know if it's a Kada season down by
- 0:50you, but like it's a good season when they just all pop out,
- 0:53no matter what year it is on that like seventeen eighteen year brew thing or
- 0:57whatever it's it's Central Alloys. Is Cornfield season? Um? That that is
- 1:04about what it is. But I didn't tell you it was actually up in
- 1:07your your neighborhood this this weekend, UM at the Edge Hearing concert because I
- 1:11had to get my fan girl out. UM. So I was up there,
- 1:15one of seventy three thousand people at Soldier Field, UM paying fifty bucks
- 1:19for our concert t shirts. So not at all this podcast is about.
- 1:23But I appreciate you breaking the weather for me up there. Yeah, you're
- 1:26welcome. I'm glad that you had a good time. Um. But yeah,
- 1:30Otherwise, I'm still trying to recover from the trade activity the trade deadline.
- 1:34I was listening to Gray and Bedon's podcast for earlier this week, and
- 1:40they've recorded on Monday and spent most of it just talking about how Banana sup
- 1:45bloods that they were doing it before the deadline, and that that would have
- 1:51been that would have been fun. I don't know about you, but I
- 1:53I was having control remembering what time the trade deadline actually was, because it
- 1:59seemed like, you know, deals just kept flying in even after you know,
- 2:02the actual you know clock struck trade deadline, and I'm like, up,
- 2:07we're done. And I swear there at least five or six deals that
- 2:10got announced after it wasn't just two minutes after, three minutes after, it
- 2:15was like forty five minutes later. There's still deals getting announced and getting worked
- 2:19through, which feels like a little bit more than the last few years.
- 2:23But it was. It was an exciting trade deadline. Personally, I had
- 2:27a blast washing all the trades, trying to figure out what was going on,
- 2:30trying to figure out who's actually buying and selling. I don't wants you,
- 2:32but there's definitely a few teams that I was not sure if they were
- 2:37in. It feels like my um, a lot of my Dynasty teams was
- 2:39like one foot in, one foot out. Couldn't decide my identity for those.
- 2:45Yeah, I mean which ones were you think? Yeah, specifically that
- 2:47we're like doing a little bit of both. Well, I think the biggest
- 2:52one to me was the Diamondbacks. I think Arizona there's nothing like trading for
- 2:57a closure than trading your former closure. Way, he's just trading things out,
- 3:01trading outfielders, bringing outfielders in. Of any team that doesn't need more
- 3:06outfielders, I think it's the Diamondbacks. But it felt like they were retooling
- 3:09or had very specific skills they were after, and as soon as they filled
- 3:13the spot, they moved somebody else out. So definitely the Diamondbacks, and
- 3:16I'd say to extend the Mariners, I thought they might do a little bit
- 3:21more buying. They seemed to think they ended up mostly selling, but they
- 3:25definitely felt like they were a little bit in that that bucket as well,
- 3:29maybe I'll throw it one last one out the Brewers. That was just a
- 3:32good you know, that Louis Urius deal kind of at the the last second
- 3:37was a little bit of head scratcher for a team. But granted last year's
- 3:42one to try to Josh Hayter in the middle of the Pennant race, so
- 3:45I'm not too shocked on the Milwaukee Brewer front. Yeah, I mean,
- 3:51I think Louis Sirius just just falling out of favor. He's been banged up
- 3:54so long, and I don't know, it's just like that kind of guy
- 3:58needs a change of scenery. But I do agree with El on the Diamondbacks.
- 4:01It was really funny seeing them. The other guy that you forgot,
- 4:04like is rojaspent Out. They brought in Peterson, So yes, they had
- 4:10the utility second basement that based to go in and out the Mariners. The
- 4:16Mariners will always be at the trade deadline. I don't think you're ever going
- 4:20to be able to tell what Jerry Depoto is trying to do because he's kind
- 4:24of always trying to play for d chess. You can't tell what is true
- 4:28evaluation of players is and what he's truly seeking because I think he loves that
- 4:32wildcard surprise element. I mean, that guy was doing trades from the hospital
- 4:40dead at one point in time, so he's dedicated to the cause and the
- 4:45trade deadline unsure, it's like a Christmas bonanza, like it's a holiday season
- 4:49for Jerry de Poto. Doesn't get better than that. Yeah, I don't
- 4:53know, and I do think personally it was a seller's market. I don't
- 4:57know if you had the same feeling. I was a little i'd say,
- 5:00got diluted a little bit towards the end there as as the Mets decided to
- 5:04become sellers, which I was a little surprised to see. Um. See,
- 5:08it seems like they what we hear twenty twenty four is a transition year,
- 5:13is the talk on the street now for the Mets, and so I
- 5:15was a little surprised to see them selling. But it seemed like overall it
- 5:19was a pretty solid sellers market, some pretty good prospect movement, pretty good
- 5:25retooling by teams, and it seemed like if you had guys to move,
- 5:29yeah, you were able to move them for the most part. So there's
- 5:32just they're definitely maybe a two to one three to one buyer to seller reach,
- 5:35which was very very good for a number of those teams selling. And
- 5:41I think for you and I that's it's close to home being Cardinals fans,
- 5:45and I know you and you and your your White Sox as well. Definitely
- 5:49did not retool for this season by by any means of the trade deadline,
- 5:56I know, And so yeah, I mean definitely felt like it's always market
- 6:00tea is both my favorite teams are dealing dudes out left and right, left
- 6:02and right, and the Cardinals I think made sense. The Cardinals, they're
- 6:06retooling. It could have been a little bit better, but once you go
- 6:11into the media and announced that you're finally looking for K nine pictures the way
- 6:14everyone else is, it's not like everyone's going to be forking those dudes over
- 6:18for you. So I mean, Moslilac, I think did the best you
- 6:21could to try to put pieces into the pen for next year and retool the
- 6:28Final League system a little bit. But it's clear that they've got to be
- 6:30a little active agency and with the Socks Socks, they did a great job
- 6:39of clearing out that pen and getting gilto and then out as well, and
- 6:44just recouping whatever they could. Of course, they keeping the ridiculous stance that
- 6:48they're going to try and go for it in twenty twenty four, which I'm
- 6:53sure it will lead to just more abject failure. But the biggest just kind
- 7:00of like no sort of moment, just kind of like screaming at the heavens,
- 7:05was Jake Burger going out fan favorite. I don't think anybody on White
- 7:11Socks Twitter was excited about seeing Jake Burger grow. He's been very easy to
- 7:15cheer for with his multiple achilles injuries and became into spring training with this great
- 7:19mustache to you and nine the entire team and bond people together. His wife
- 7:26is a great Twitter presence, He's got this cute little kid that he touts
- 7:29around the games, and Jake Burger's just kind of an all around great,
- 7:32beloved dude on a team that is includes Mike Clevenger and Tim Anderson, who
- 7:40hasn't been the friendliest dude of late, and so Jake Burger was one of
- 7:46the reasons I think people went to guarantee the great field nowadays, So it's
- 7:49really sad that he's going out to Marlin's now. Also said for me,
- 7:55I had a little bit of a Minnie Jake Burger PC, which I realized
- 8:00I did get some feedback from some listeners that we never explained that PC was.
- 8:05It's personal collection m for for card collectors out there, So when you're
- 8:11here to refer to a PC that's with his personal collection. Um. So
- 8:16I had a little one just because Jake Burger was a cheap one. Obviously,
- 8:20it was easy to put together, and he looked great on cards,
- 8:24just with his stature and if you got some of him with his mustache.
- 8:28So it'll be sad to see. Yeah, I think it's speaking of PCs
- 8:33that were hurt, and I think good, good point calling about PC is
- 8:37personal collection there, so anything that you collect just because you love it,
- 8:41like to like to have it, like to keep it, versus something you're
- 8:43looking to flip or cells. Definitely what the PC's all about. What hurt
- 8:48my PC? Definitely a little bit Well to two aspects here, Jack Flaherty
- 8:54and Paul de Young being traded have an abnormally large Paul de Young PC.
- 9:01I'm not sure if I should admit that or not. Um, but Paul
- 9:03de Young went to went to college in the town that you and I grew
- 9:07up in and so you know, gave us a nice little connection there,
- 9:09and um, definitely definitely have some fun Paul to young cards and uh Jack
- 9:15Flaherty actually the only baseball that my son has gotten tossed to him at a
- 9:20base baseball games from Jack Flaherty And so I've kind of collected him on and
- 9:24off and I have a nice little pc of him. And now I can't
- 9:28decide what to do with the darn thing. It's gonna keep going. Let's
- 9:31let's be honest, it's gonna keep going. I'm gonna keep adding things to
- 9:33it because at least in the card world, pictures are cheap, so um,
- 9:39it gives us a chance to pull things. In the other other news,
- 9:43I want to I want to hit on real quick for your white the
- 9:45white socks Liam Hendricks, Tommy John Surgery um just announced and uh, you
- 9:54know when we talk about uh new uh socks closers, um, and who
- 10:00might have a chance to hold that job long term? And I'm guessing you're
- 10:03thinking as Gregory Santos looks like he might have a chance to run with it
- 10:07that the question was just this year and looks like definitely has some runway to
- 10:13go, and just too bad for Liam Hendricks, everything that he has been
- 10:16through, just trying to recover from from cancer now trying to get back healthy
- 10:22and having Tommy John surgery and he's not a young Spring Chickens. He's getting
- 10:26up there now. He's also building the best case ever for comeback Player of
- 10:30the Year. So that's a star for him there, but the unfortunate news
- 10:37to see him getting hurt. Yeah, yeah, it's gonna be. I
- 10:41don't know, Like I don't know if Lillam does come back. I really
- 10:43hope he does because he another fan favorite. And it's been yeah, just
- 10:48a really bummer year for Socks between that and now Burger being gone, and
- 10:54yeah, it's that was probably going to be like one of the one bright
- 10:56flats down the stretch for the Socks is being Liam maybe coming back. But
- 11:01the writing was always kind of on the wall with the forearm injury he had
- 11:05last year and the way that the Socks were talking about the elbow injury this
- 11:09time around. It didn't seem like prognosis was great and William has been at
- 11:15the game and like we'll hang out fullpen and say hi to people and stuff.
- 11:18So I don't know, I could seem still sticking around and being a
- 11:24part of the organization for a long time, because that is I think part
- 11:26of why the Socks has gotten twisted into the knots that they have is it
- 11:31is an organization that runs much more like a group of friends and like everyone's
- 11:37there for like they like to be co workers and be together and work together.
- 11:43And so if the Socks want to keep being around, I could see
- 11:46that happening. Yeah, I could as well. It sounds like a lot's
- 11:52changed since the ozzygee and era there in Chicago. So one more thing we
- 11:56have to talk about. And I know I sent you message about this earlier.
- 12:01Um for all the fallout out all the fallout of of the trade deadline.
- 12:05Um. And for those who don't know, uh, you know,
- 12:09Mike and I were in two fantasy leagues together. Um, it's it's only
- 12:13two right now, it is only two. So it's it's it's varied over
- 12:20the years. We've been in NL al only, dynasty re draft leagues,
- 12:26all kinds of things together. Um. Probably all sports too. Um.
- 12:30Yeah, but I've I think probably tended back to baseball as the skill set
- 12:33here. Um. But earlier this season one of our leagues. Uh,
- 12:39we made a trade, and uh it's really the the main guys in the
- 12:43trade. Not not important. That's not what's important here in this beef I
- 12:48have with you. This is a league where we get six keepers and for
- 12:50whatever reason, um relievers in c a rodo five by five closers go for
- 12:56a premium in our draft. We're talking a large portion of your budget,
- 12:58and we have an auction draft. And I was so thrilled to pull over
- 13:05Andrea's Unos from the Mariners in the deal as our secondary piece because I've got
- 13:11had an eye on next year cheap closure keeper, because he's gonna get the
- 13:16job at some point. So trade happens this this the last few days here,
- 13:20and you know he's guaranteed be the closer after uh you know, see
- 13:24world goes over to the Diamondbacks. I pull up my my fantasy team,
- 13:30pull up the app and our closure our keeper rules allow you to keep the
- 13:35guy at the salary that he was bought at auction, and then you know
- 13:39escalates over time, different different fun rules that might be a topic for another
- 13:43day, the crazy rules that we have in that league at times, but
- 13:46I yes, I was so disappointed and frustrated to find out somebody spent seventeen
- 13:54dollars at our auction draft on Andrea's munos when he was not the cloth or
- 14:00and he was hurt. Um Or was shortly thereafter. But yeah, yeah,
- 14:07so I'm sitting here in my head, I had just been given a
- 14:11free closure for next year. I was so psyched because it was part of
- 14:15my strategy in that trade that somebody myself did not check the keeper values and
- 14:20I was so I was very disappointed when I realized I was fleeced um not
- 14:26by your actual ow doing by my lack of paying attention to the actual deal.
- 14:31But salary was updated before the because that is the CPS like you have
- 14:35to You can't write like a script to like have it update the salary automatically.
- 14:41So I have to go through as commissioned manually at it the salaries,
- 14:46and so sometimes I do fall behind because it's just not worth it to go
- 14:50in after every bab round and update everybody's salaries because usually it's guys who are
- 14:56you know on the fringes. But because we have escalators based on how much
- 15:01waiver wire dollars you put towards it, you can sometimes get out of whack.
- 15:07But yeah, I am sorry. That was a bitting more that happened
- 15:09at the auction table in the spring, And honestly, like I had,
- 15:13I liked out of the gate for the year because even if he wasn't going
- 15:20to get the full closer job with seaball, his rates and his projections were
- 15:24so strong that like he was usable as almost like an Andrew Miller, where
- 15:30even if he only picked up you know, five saves the floor for a
- 15:33guy like that can be ten bucks of value because he can rack up one
- 15:37hundred and twenty k's. So yeah, I think he's a great player going
- 15:43forward. But sorry, he's not very peopful. That's that's okay. I
- 15:46lost Jordan remind out of the Blue Jays like this right at the same time,
- 15:50so he's serving a purpose. I will just have to go back to
- 15:54the drawing board for next year, which is okay. It's not like we
- 15:56actually put the salaries right on the trading screen when everything's proposed and accepted,
- 16:00So um, I should I should have seen that one coming, but I'm
- 16:06I clearly was distracted, not my best moment, so it's all right,
- 16:11clear all your fault in that league. I recently put out a commissioner note
- 16:15ask telling people that they needed resources, they can reach out to me if
- 16:18they needed salaries and stuff. But so now it's the fault, it's not
- 16:23one. So I suggest doing that for your leagues. Get that, get
- 16:27all the housekeeping set because one of my leagues has a deadline tomorrow, which
- 16:34is a little weird, but I think most fancy trade deadlines are at the
- 16:40end of this month. So we can maybe do a segment on that later
- 16:45in a couple of weeks. But for today, we got some great stuff
- 16:48lined up analyzing more of just the trade deadline. The trade deadline came through
- 16:53like the freight train, and we're the first gras Ball podcast to get to
- 16:57cover it because and be down run on Mondays, so and and so we're
- 17:04gonna have the B team first, exactly. So we got during our card
- 17:11session, we're gonna talk about some of the prospects that were dealt and maybe
- 17:17some of the values that might change to their rookie cards from those deals,
- 17:21as well as going into a little bit of details on how we determine which
- 17:25prospects we want to stash and in research for putting away those cards and hoping
- 17:32that they they break big and you can buy them cheap, and some for
- 17:37when they're more expensive. And then in the fantasy section, we're gonna because
- 17:42the volume of trades is insane, just absolutely insane. Um, we're gonna
- 17:48just focus on trying to narrow down some of the bigger trades. And thankfully
- 17:52Mike Patriolo from Lab already went through and ranked his top twenty three favorite trades,
- 17:56so we're gonna go through his first thirteen because I think that's about where
- 18:02the great fantasy relevance cut off before we get into maybe gritty relievers that aren't
- 18:07really relevant for fanacy purposes. So we've got those two subjects coming up.
- 18:12Stick with us after this break. There's no I in Team, but there

- 19:45right, everybody, welcome back to the second portion of cards and categories.
- 19:48Here we're going to talk about cards portion and focus on prospecting. So prospecting
- 19:55is a big business for baseball card collectors because the time to buy in on
- 20:00players and try to value down the road is when they're cheap and down in
- 20:07rookie ball a ball, and just like fantasy Purposes and dynasty, you're always
- 20:11looking for the hot and thing and trying to find inefficiencies in the market where
- 20:18you can find cheaper players and hopefully hit it big later. So I know
- 20:22it's a game that we both play, and the biggest place to play for
- 20:26that, I think is in Bowmen sets, when you're pulling those Bowmen first
- 20:30getting those prospects. So between Bowmen that comes out the spring, just the
- 20:36base Bowmen set that will have all your prospects with it, and then Bowman
- 20:40Draft is released later in the year as well as Bowman Chrome those will have
- 20:44different prospects sets as well. So that's one area to do it, and
- 20:48the other is just for all rookie cards, just your normal rookie cards.
- 20:52I think this happens especially when you run into pictures and kind of back end
- 20:57top one hundred prospects that get called up maybe a little early or tops runs
- 21:02they are rookie cards a little early, and you can collect those rookie cards,
- 21:06but those are really the two main spots where you're trying to actually gather
- 21:11these prospect cards. Um and so Jeremy well, anything that you're looking for
- 21:17specifically out of maybe those different sets. In terms of Bowman Bowman came Bowman
- 21:22Tract tops Tops update series that you're really honing in on specifically for prospecting,
- 21:29or have had maybe some of your better luck. Yeah, I mean I
- 21:33think for me, the where I haven't seem to have the best luck and
- 21:36when where I end up spending most of my time if I'm really looking to
- 21:40prospect and maybe flips something laters in the it's Bowman sets. Mainly looking for
- 21:45Bowman first, Bowmen first, Bowman first, Chrome Woman first autos. That's
- 21:49really where I'm finding most value for me, the top sets. There is
- 21:53some fun there, but that's more going to be personal collection type type things,
- 21:57PC things, um you know or uh you know. For for me,
- 22:03I kind of guy likes to maybe grab one rookie of all the big
- 22:07guys just to have, just to have it and maybe someday say, you
- 22:11know, I have the Bob Gibson rookie or the Mike Trout rookie because I
- 22:15was, you know, had it early. So I always like to maybe
- 22:18you know, set aside one of anybody that seems like they have the potential.
- 22:22Um so, of course I missed Atani and all those other guys,
- 22:26but um so I'm I'm really looking at Bowman is the core if I if
- 22:32I'm going to look to to grab guys to stash him and hold him and
- 22:36then maybe uh down the road flip them for a little bit of profit and
- 22:40uh collections anything like mine, flipping for profit, reinvest in something like Paul
- 22:44the Young. Um, so the the profit heian stops right right there with
- 22:51the you know, the Paul the Young big patches or something like that.
- 22:53The market of three people who want those is not the largest. So yeah,
- 22:57Bowman for me is the spot to start. How about how about you?
- 23:00Yeah, I mean I think Bowman is a great place to start.
- 23:04I mean, if you can get your hands on Bowman d Bowman Draft is
- 23:07a hobby only product, so you have to buy that either through a dealer
- 23:14like a collectible shop that you would locally have, or even through tops dot
- 23:18com or somewhere else. You can't go and find that at Target, Walmart
- 23:22and these retail places the way you can Bowman and just regular Tops. So
- 23:27draft is a little harder to get a hold of. I've never ripped open
- 23:30in any draft that Usually when I am collecting Draft, I'm finding it in
- 23:37dollar boxes at card shows. And the way that I even sort through those.
- 23:42To try to help myself is when I'm sorting through those and seeing them
- 23:47in the dog watches. Obviously you try to remember some of like the bigger
- 23:52prospects before they're kind of coming through the ranks, and like I'm thinking a
- 23:57lot about like Evan Carter or earlier in the year, I was trying to
- 24:02buy as much as to kind of arrow out of dollar boxes as I could.
- 24:06So those guys are both top ten five prospects now, and so you're
- 24:11trying to like find those guys that maybe you're at the back of the top
- 24:15one hundred or not even at the top one hundred lists right now that you
- 24:21just have identified from your eye or listening to podcasts or however you actually do
- 24:27prospects through Dincy purposes or would kind of put yourself in the mind of the
- 24:32GM. I would do the same thing with baseball cards. But the other
- 24:36thing that I've had success with is when I'm going through those dor boxes is
- 24:41not only having those guys in mind that I'm specifically looking for, but also
- 24:47flipping over the back of the card and seeing what round the guy's taking in.
- 24:51So all of the Bowman cards have the draft information you know, kind
- 24:56of classic heightweight, biography, stats, whatever. But I look at the
- 25:02draft round, so you'll see lots of dudes who are international signings, you
- 25:07know, the guys coming out of the Dominican and any other kind of places
- 25:11that go through the national signing process, and so those can be hard to
- 25:15pass through a little bit. But especially nowadays, teams are so smart,
- 25:19and I think lots of teams are really good at the draft now compared to
- 25:23where they used to be. And so if I'm I don't have every draft
- 25:30memorized in my head, ms who was like a first second rounder, But
- 25:33if I'm going through dollar boxes and seeing guys who were first rounders and second
- 25:37rounders, I take the lots of gambles on those. You know, especially
- 25:41when you're in a situation you get like ten four dollars or twenty five four
- 25:47dollars and can really get quantities going that like those guys, I don't mind
- 25:52throwing pennings at them and hoping that it could pop into a couple of dollars
- 25:56down the growth. And then I think two pieces add to that from from
- 26:00my perspective, and I write with you that strategy. As I was thinking
- 26:03the same thing that the draft round hitters over pictures. Um, are the
- 26:08hobby severely under values pictures. Never understand why. But if your favorite players
- 26:14a picture, uh, you're you're gonna find some some good deals on them.
- 26:18Um. And the other thing is is market, right, um,
- 26:21market that they're in. And then it's kind of twofold. You know,
- 26:23are you in a bigger market? Are you in the New York? Are
- 26:26you wanna la or you gonna market that collects really well? You know?
- 26:30For for us, Saint Louis is always over collecting everything. Um. I
- 26:34think Chicago teams clubs being being one of them, seems to collect really well.
- 26:40Um. I think a few the Texas teams, uh actually on a
- 26:44few of the Texas teams. All the Texas teams see seem to do really
- 26:48well. So I think you're kind of looking for those bigger market clubs that
- 26:51have really big fan bases. Just it's a applying demand game that'll that'll play.
- 26:56So I think all those kind of pieces coming together. But I also
- 26:57think it's for as guys that are still in the original club I think also
- 27:03has an impact on their value, and which I know is we talk about
- 27:07propects that were dealt today, all of them, you know, their value
- 27:11does take a little bit of hit overall that trade market because there are there's
- 27:15a cohorted trader, you know, of collectors that once players in the jersey
- 27:19of their team, and there's a cohort that that really wants to have their
- 27:27you know, once they've left, they don't want to maintain them anymore.
- 27:32So there's kind of like a when somebody's traded, there's a flood of the
- 27:33marketplace of guys like I don't want to collect this guy anymore, and there's
- 27:37others that they're like, well, I don't really want them because he's not
- 27:40in the jersey of my team yet. So there's kind of an inefficiency in
- 27:42the marketplace that sometimes takes place there. But then that when that guy hits
- 27:47inevitably. Let's use like Randy Rose Arena for example. You know, we
- 27:52all remember the playoff run he had a little bit about two years ago now
- 27:55and he just his brocket. His value shot through the roof. But the
- 27:59INEFFICI should see that, you know, you could buy him so cheap because
- 28:03nobody really wanted him in the Cardinals Jersey wanted him in the Raised Jersey.
- 28:07But once he took off, I was like, wait a second, We'll
- 28:11take him with whatever he's got. So I think that there's a piece piece
- 28:15there. So I'm right there with you. I think that digging through some
- 28:18of those is really a good place to start. Yeah, and then from
- 28:22there, I mean, I like to tuck those players away and kind of
- 28:26I've got a box of rookies and prospects so that I know, like I
- 28:30can go through and find first and rookie cards whenever I need to. Like,
- 28:36obviously, I think the best time to sell them is when these players
- 28:40come up. So I mean this year, I was holding some Mason Miller
- 28:45cards, and the first start I think he came up, I made sure
- 28:48to get those things listed on e Bay and sold as soon as I could.
- 28:52So that's a great example of why you do that, because Mason Miller's
- 28:55market did not go anywhere until that debut. So yeah, hold on too.
- 29:00If you end up with you know, cards or prospects, just hold
- 29:03onto them. Um. You know, there's there's a bound to be some
- 29:08value somewhere as at some point there, you know, I think for me,
- 29:11I end up usually over the winner. When you know the baseball card
- 29:15market kind of takes a dip. Everybody's looking at football and basketball, they're
- 29:21kind of paying attention to other things going on. The baseball card market does
- 29:22take kind of a dipping. Values. I usually try to pick out,
- 29:26you know, two or three or four guys that I think are gonna debut
- 29:30early the next year, and pick up a handful of of their cards and
- 29:36the second those guys get called up, because usually when they get called up,
- 29:40they're hot, right, they're they're playing well, if the rose colored
- 29:42glasses, everything's gonna go well. Usually I'm selling them the day they get
- 29:48called up, or to your point, the first start or something like that,
- 29:51because that most likely at least prospecting um, I would say lower dollar
- 29:56value cars autos might be a little bit different or really rare parallels. Those
- 30:02have a chance to hold their value a little longer. But if you're talking
- 30:03you know your base, your your chromes, maybe you know some of the
- 30:07refractor ors, things like that, their values to really exceed where they're at
- 30:12when they're called up, they have to really really hit um. You know,
- 30:18even you know Bobby Wit Let's let's use that as an example. When
- 30:22he was called up his tops chromes cards were going for a roughly that's a
- 30:26twenty dollars a piece. Oh and yeah, you can buy him for like
- 30:30eight dollars. Now, the guy's not any any worse. You know,
- 30:33you can argue he might be a first rounder in fantasy purposes. Like he's
- 30:37still a really good player. But like the threshold that says everybody wants to
- 30:41have the next big thing, there's such a demand that comes through at that
- 30:45time in the marketplace, and so I tend to look for that. And
- 30:48then the other thing that I do is, you know, kind of combine
- 30:52my PC with that investment to a degree, and so I target cards from
- 30:57from my team, guys that I walk a lot, so that from this,
- 31:00I'm not too disappointed. I got extra cards to the guy because you
- 31:04know, it was fun to it's collective, you know, players from my
- 31:07own team, um, and I generally paid more attention to them things like
- 31:10that, And I think for me that the best uh success I have that
- 31:15was, you know, I got a chance to meet Nolan Gorman and the
- 31:18Cardinals when he was eighteen. Um, you know, seemed like a really
- 31:22nice guy, had a really great interaction with him, and so I'm like,
- 31:25I'm gonna start collecting this guy. To your point, first rounder's got
- 31:29the power, good market. I'm like, I'm going to pick these up.
- 31:33And I generally focused on Bowmen paper, which a lot of people are
- 31:37probably giving a side eye for for doing, but you know, the cheapest
- 31:40of the cheap, and then I'll pick up the chromes and refractors. But
- 31:44you know, if I could find the paper for fifty cents or a dollar,
- 31:47I was buying them all over the place, doing the same, you
- 31:48know, chromes for five dollars, things like that, And I didn't realize
- 31:52how much I had, but at one point I had about one hundred and
- 31:55fifty first papers of Nolan Gorman, probably about your forty of the chromes,
- 32:00and you know, half a dozen or so of the refractors. When he
- 32:04called up, got called up the bases, we're going for five dollars a
- 32:07piece, the you know, the the chromes were going for fifteen, refractors
- 32:12for almost thirty. I ended up selling the vast majority of it, and
- 32:15then you know, he went on hard times a few months later, bought
- 32:19back at all that I actually wanted to hold on to, and so,
- 32:22uh, that was very profitable for me. But I don't know if I
- 32:27suggest going one hundred and fifty Bowman first of just a random guy if you
- 32:32don't want to still have him later, Um, it's you know, if
- 32:37you don't have some reason that it will that you're still excited to having your
- 32:39collection, might not be the best diversification strategy that that I went through.
- 32:44So I might call that one a little bit more luck than a strategy at
- 32:46the end of the day. But how about you, when any any big
- 32:50successes that that you've had, uh No, I mean usually they're just smaller
- 32:55here and there, like I usually sortainly through. And it's also like it's
- 33:00been a little while since I had been in the card collecting game. I've
- 33:05got back in in twenty twenty during COVID, and I know you were in
- 33:07a little bit before that. So I'm still waiting on some of those things
- 33:12to kind of come to tuition in terms of some of those prospects to come
- 33:16through the cycle of making it all the way up and being able to profit
- 33:22from those. But usually it is smaller here and there, like especially I
- 33:25mean ther Tanis were obviously very big, but I usually just try to ride
- 33:30the waves in terms of you know, maybe if I don't hit that first
- 33:34one where the debut happens, trying to find other momntous like times within that
- 33:42players career that might be able to yield some value. So I've had some
- 33:46success over the past a couple of years moving some things around. Then all
- 33:50Star break, especially when somebody makes an All Star Game, I think there
- 33:53are people out there who denote that, and especially there, I think there's
- 33:59lots of older collectors who have pecs of like every All Star or every All
- 34:05Star from their team and stuff like that, and so they like to pick
- 34:08up stuff. But that otherwise, like the off season period is a little
- 34:15slower. But if somebody has had a big year and you know, makes
- 34:20this new kind of like all MLB team that they have, you know,
- 34:23that denotes some of the best players. When some sort of sluggers, when
- 34:27some hardware you know, puts up a huge seven eight, nine more season,
- 34:31kind of quietly, the guy who I especially think about that I've been
- 34:36doing this with has been under sminis like I've been slowly kind of building things
- 34:39together and as he kind of like ebbs and flows, I'll slow off pieces
- 34:43here and there, and the other time is before the season actually, like
- 34:49spring training, when people are getting back into cards, the baseball market beats
- 34:52up a little bit. And I think along with kind of fantasy drafts and
- 34:58dynasty drafts, as you know, people kind of perfectate through those rounds and
- 35:04kind of come to the top of your drafts, that's usually a pretty good
- 35:07indicator that their card market is in the same boat. So when I see
- 35:13things like that, I'm trying to think if anybody really stands out. I
- 35:17mean, Randy Rose and Rain is a big one because he just just such
- 35:22a nothing prospect to the Cardinals for a long time. Ottoly Spashala there's a
- 35:27part of that too. So like guys like that who can kind of really
- 35:32bloom have a great opportunity for you to be able to like go up and
- 35:37down with their career. Yeah, dig through what you got and there's a
- 35:42good chance you're gonna find something that's that's popped in value at that point.
- 35:45Yeah. So I think with that, we wanted to go through and cover
- 35:50a few of the guys that were traded at the deadline and kind of what
- 35:52their prospects status could be and kind of where their market could go. So
- 35:59I think I will just kind of do in generalities. Uh, Brew,
- 36:02did you have a guy that really like you stood out one way or another
- 36:07either there you see a huge boosting value or a huge dropping value that you
- 36:13want to denote from the trade deadline. Yeah, I mean there's a lot
- 36:16of we can go through, and but I'm just gonna start with maybe what
- 36:21I think might be the most obvious one. Um, and maybe maybe it
- 36:24isn't obvious, but maybe maybe it's just me. But uh, the little
- 36:28Acunah Louis Angels Kunau is you know, Ronald's little brother, uh, you
- 36:34know, twenty one year old coming over from uh from the Rangers, the
- 36:37Mets, in the in the in the Max Church or trade. Um.
- 36:40And you know he's actually been a pretty good hitter and in the minors above
- 36:45average power. Uh. You know, he's he's been hitting well for uh
- 36:51generally for for this year. Um. And really it's two fold for me
- 36:57on this is you know, he's he seems to be a decent player.
- 37:02Um. I don't know what his dealing is, but he seems like he's
- 37:07got some pretty good tools and and a good chance to be a solid major
- 37:12leaguer. Uh, but he has name value in a big market. I
- 37:15think is is the piece here, Um is that you know you're going to
- 37:20be in New York. There's a lot of collectors in New York that are
- 37:23looking for the next big thing, and UM have him being Ronald Cooney's a
- 37:31little brother. Uh does bring you know with it, probably pressure, but
- 37:36also just awareness that that he's there. And so I think that he's one
- 37:40of those guys that, um, you know, he's he's gonna have a
- 37:45chance and he's gonna, you know, get to the major leagues. He's
- 37:47in Double A now as a twenty one year old, and so I think
- 37:50he has a really really good chance to be in the majors. Maybe late
- 37:55next year. Um, maybe maybe the year after, but I think there's
- 37:59a chance late next years. The Mets really try to figure out what they're
- 38:01doing in twenty four and what they have for for beyond. And he's going
- 38:06to have hype when he comes up, regardless of hell wealth he's playing.
- 38:09Um So if I look at a guy in there that you know, I
- 38:14said slam dunk, you know probably can hold his value. If you got
- 38:17a few of the cards sitting there, hold onto him. Is definitely Louis
- 38:21Angelo Acunia now of the New York Mets. So how about I would choose
- 38:25there is there a guy that sticks out to you that the value changed substantially
- 38:30with the trades. I mean, a Cunia would have been my number one
- 38:35for sure, just for all the reasons you listed, big name, big
- 38:37market, I think, honestly the one that probably gets the biggest bruce otherwise.
- 38:43But the Edgar Claro, the catcher go in front of the Angels to
- 38:46the socks, and I was actually already starting to pick up some of the
- 38:51Claro's cards, just because he is coming through the minories very quickly and has
- 38:57been chearing it up. He said, switch hitting that, and he I
- 39:01think that's right. I should probably check that before I actually like to say
- 39:05that. Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure you're right. He's
- 39:08you know, uh is a switch switching catcher. Maybe not the most common
- 39:14thing out there, but no, but like I think that, I mean,
- 39:17they've had Grandall, so hopefully Grandall can kind of show him the ropes
- 39:21here a little bit um even though he's going to be gone at the end
- 39:23of the season. But he's just had a solid back and been really young
- 39:29at the age he's only twenty years old and double A and um, he's
- 39:32a bat first prospect that catcher. So it might be a little suspect as
- 39:37he moves through and seeing like how well he can handle pictures and come up.
- 39:42But I think he has the chance to be a really big piece of
- 39:46the Socks going forward, and I think when he gets called up, there's
- 39:50going to be a decent amount of hype. I think there always kind of
- 39:52is with Socks players. Just look at Oscar Colas that happened this year and
- 39:59how like poorly that's gone, but like his market definitely was boosted before that.
- 40:05And obviously all these guys what we're talking about, it's gonna hurt that,
- 40:08like they're not wearing the jersey of the guy of the team that they're
- 40:12coming up with. But Edgar Quer I think just walks into a nice situation
- 40:15with the Socks and kind of gives the fans a little extra to cheer about.
- 40:22And yeah, I think I think you're right. Go ahead. Oh,
- 40:24I was gonna say, I will stay with him. The Jake Edar
- 40:30as well, will kind of being piggyback Quaro too, that might as will
- 40:35pair them. I think Jake Edter probably burned right the way Mason Miller did
- 40:40that when he comes up, you've got to stop past because who knows how
- 40:45long his arm is gonna ask or last. But m Jake Edor is an
- 40:50electric arm and his fangraphs page like Prospects t l DR still reads the left
- 40:57handed Spencer Striders. So we'll see where goes socks and take. Yeah,
- 41:01I think the I think I think you're right. You know, Editors,
- 41:06he's got high ceilings and so you know he might come up and just get
- 41:08go crazy for a few starts and that's all it takes. But uh,
- 41:13I do I do have to coal throw cold water on one guy? Uh
- 41:16that that got traded. Um. And I think that this is important to
- 41:20talk about the difference between fantasy values and card values. UM. And So
- 41:23a guy that I think there's gonna be some some difference here is Kyle Menzardo
- 41:29coming over from uh, you know, the Tampa Bay. Um. I
- 41:32think he's a guy that a lot of people are going to look at him.
- 41:37You know, the the guardians pulled him over and he's he's a good
- 41:44hitter. He is a just generally good hitter um. Unfortunately, the comp
- 41:47I have, the guy he reminds me of is Jake Bowers. Also another
- 41:52guy that played for both those h same teams. I have to look back
- 41:55to see the transaction history. There might be a little bit too close of
- 41:58a comp. But a guy that just doesn't have any one tool that just
- 42:04blows you away, and you know, also plays a position that requires a
- 42:08lot more as far as a being a hitter, and so I think Menzaro
- 42:13is one of those that, you know act actually from my fantasy perspective,
- 42:16is kind of a nice guy to probably have around, you know, maybe
- 42:20you know teens homers, maybe squeaks out five to ten steels, hits to
- 42:24ninety, Like he's kind of a piece that's it's nice to have on your
- 42:29team and definitely plugs holes and things like that, but not going to be
- 42:31your starter. Might be a corner and field or type type of guy.
- 42:35But I don't think he ever is the guy that's going to light something on
- 42:38fire. And so he's he's not gonna have like this crazy month in the
- 42:43minors that where he hits ten home runs and hits five hundred and gets called
- 42:46up, and his values are through the roof and then he goes on a
- 42:50streak like he's just not that player. You know, I think I was.
- 42:53I was looking at his his scouting rankings and uh, you know on
- 42:59the twenty to eighties scale. You know, his hit tool actually is a
- 43:02his prospect report has a potential seventy, so he's good for good average,
- 43:07but everything else is like a forty forty five fifty at best, Like he's
- 43:12just going to be a good hitter, and so um, I think the
- 43:16trade actually kind of highlights him, and people are like, oh, you
- 43:19got traded. There's a lot of value. It's a guy that you should
- 43:22go pick up because you know clearly he's wanted and he's going to get a
- 43:24chance to play in Cleveland, which I think is all right, but probably
- 43:29better on the fantasy side of things because he's just not going to have that
- 43:34and say star power that you're really looking for and hoping for kind of that
- 43:37card market to really spike the values at some point. So throwing some cold
- 43:42water there on Kyle Menzardo and also have to throw out the Jake Bower's comp
- 43:45because I would, at least in the fantasy world, Jake Bowers everybody's waiting
- 43:50for that guy to get called up for seeing like five years, and then
- 43:53when he did, he just fizzled for probably another five years. So cold
- 43:59water Kyleman's art. Yeah, and Jake Bowers. I pulled up the trade
- 44:02for you. It was a three way trade. It is how he got
- 44:05up from. It went from Cleveland to h from Tampa to Cleveland. It
- 44:09was the Yandy Das trade. So Carlos and Tanna went from Seattle to Cleveland,
- 44:15Yandy Diaz, the Coole Sulzer went to Tampa and Edwin and Carnascione and
- 44:21Jake Bowers went to I feel wrong in calling the Jake Bowers trade at this
- 44:27point. I think that was the That was the last piece of the batter.
- 44:30It sounds like, Yeah, the other guy that I have to throw
- 44:34cold water on is also going to Cleveland and also coming from Florida, and
- 44:38that's Khalil Watson. He had a little bit of hype when his cards came
- 44:44out last year because he was one of the bigger prospects in twenty twenty two
- 44:49bowmen, just the base prospects, and so he was drafted in twenty twenty
- 44:54one and sixteenth overall by the Marlins. He has struggled in the minors with
- 45:00the Marlins, he's just not been able to fully put it together. Last
- 45:05year in eight ball he had a ninety sixth of RC pluts, which isn't
- 45:07bad for nineteen year old, but he ran into some on field issues,
- 45:12Like I'm trying to remember exactly what the incident was, but like there was
- 45:16something with a call from an umpire that he didn't like, and he like
- 45:20gestured at him and made it look like the gun or like the bat was
- 45:23a gun, and it wasn't great. So maybe the fresh start in Cleveland
- 45:30system will revive Kleo Watson a little bit, as he was only batting two
- 45:35h six in advanced a ball for the Marlins this year. But I think
- 45:42the same thing with Mansarto. I think that the Marlins are getting out from
- 45:49the Kleol Watson experience just because they don't like what they see, and especially
- 45:52for a system that is in dire need of bats like Leo Watson, it's
- 45:59pretty in ticative that they're shipping them out. Also, like just like Manzardo,
- 46:04there's some of the worst teams to be prospecting. People are going back
- 46:08to our conversation, and teams that are like hard to sell are the Marlins,
- 46:15the Rays, and the Guardians. Like those teams are are really just
- 46:21difficult players to move sometimes, and so taking these two guys in Marlin's and
- 46:27raised gear and putting them on the Guardians isn't going to help that at all.
- 46:30So I think that's the other guy I'm trying to slowly move out from
- 46:36underneath. If like there is something in Cleveland that might be interested in his
- 46:39new stuff but probably gonna end up being a dollar band guy for the rest
- 46:44of his life. Yeah, I think that there is in fantasy and in
- 46:51uh, you know, the in the real collecting world. There's like this
- 46:58quick little boosts that all these guys get because they get you know, they're
- 47:02in the limelight, they're in the news, so everybody's looking at them like
- 47:07they're a new shiny toy to a degree. So there's kind of a little
- 47:12bumping value in the fantasy world in the card collecting world when somebody's traded,
- 47:15So that's something that you have to pay attention to and understand why they're being
- 47:21traded. To your point, I think, you know, the models trying
- 47:23to get out from under Watson can't be underestimated and the Guardians might be just
- 47:28looking to take a flyer at that point. So definitely a lot of values
- 47:32moving around. Definitely some guys to keep an eye on for sure, out
- 47:37of all the all the movement we had. Yeah, exactly, So I
- 47:43think that reps up kind of what we wanted to go through this prospecting discussions.
- 47:47And so what do you have for new sets coming out? Yeah,
- 47:52so as far as new sets coming out today, and it's tops factory set
- 48:00day. Um, so you got factory sets starting to come out that has
- 48:06series one in series two loaded into them and chance to get foil board uh
- 48:12inserts is generally with the big one. But you also start to see some
- 48:15of the the relic chrome relics chrome variations that are go into those complete sets.
- 48:22So a lot of those being sold target Walmart, Uh Myers, I'm
- 48:29sure you know. Any of the big box stores that sell cards usually have
- 48:32a handful of these sets in a lot of different places have variations on those
- 48:37sets. I think Walmart's a key one that ends up having like every third
- 48:42set and one out of three sets has some type of variation, usually gold
- 48:45star borders on their cards. There's also like Blue Star, and I think
- 48:52there's Red Star as well that you're like about one nine nine out of ninety
- 48:54nine, so you can get some kind of a complete numbered set. A
- 49:00whole lot of them out there, but there there is some some interest,
- 49:02so those are always fun. That's where you're getting the rookie variations of some
- 49:07of the big players that are that are coming up from earlier in the year.
- 49:12So you have to think guys like ADLEI are gonna have Adlee Gunner,
- 49:16you know, Jordan Walker. Potentially those kind of guys are gonna have very
- 49:22rookie card variations that are going to be sought after because they're gonna be only
- 49:27insert in those factories sets. So that that one's coming um and I also
- 49:30know h and I might toss this one to you. But also we know
- 49:35Cosmic Chrome uh coming out. We were going to talk about Alan Ginter,
- 49:37but that one we actually talked about that little last week, but then Alan
- 49:40Ginter actually got pushed back too late September, So I'm not sure what happened
- 49:45in the tops UH factory here, but all of a sudden, we have
- 49:50Cosmic Chrome coming out tomorrow and Alan Ginter getting getting pushed back a few weeks,
- 49:54so I'm not sure if somebody was at the wrong controls. That seems
- 49:58like a pretty big difference in in cards with Cosmiccrome being in. It's a
- 50:01second year being produced by Tops, and I think actually had a pretty good
- 50:07welcoming last year. Actually we're pretty pretty fun looking cards. So I don't
- 50:09know any thoughts you have as far as those steps. Yeah, I mean
- 50:14Kyl's mccrome. We'll see how well it does. Last year. I know
- 50:17it did really well, especially if you were able to buy some and stash
- 50:22it. Because the prices went up. It was pretty short run, and
- 50:27I don't know it will be this year. I think they enjoyed that feedback
- 50:30and they're going to go a little more bananas and printing it, so we'll
- 50:35see kind of how that shacked out. Like the details of pricing in some
- 50:39of the inserts and stuff are still a little bit in the air, because
- 50:44I don't think anybody really had it slated to be coming out tomorrow, but
- 50:47it is online, so we'll see where that goes, and they go up
- 50:52a bigger update next week on that, And like you said, ELM Ginter
- 50:55got pushed back to September twenty seconds, so gives us a little time to
- 51:00formulate our discussion now. But yeah, so I think next week we'll have
- 51:04to come back and do a quick review from those Cosmic Chrome cards because that
- 51:07was that is a fun set, but is it a one time thing or
- 51:12is it something that's gonna gonna hold value to your point to get overprinted and
- 51:15it's going to scare some collectors away. So next week we'll talk more about
- 51:20Cosmic Chrome. Yeah, exactly, So stick around. We'll be back after
- 51:23the break for the fantasy portion, but we'll go through and discuss some of
- 51:29the bigger traits and the impacts that they might have on our teams. Stick
- 51:32around. Okay, welcome back to Act three of Cards and Categories. But
- 52:02we're going to talk about the fantasy portion of the trade deadline impacts. So
- 52:07what we're going to do is just to simplify this. We're not going to
- 52:10go over every single trade and when you share every single trade, especially some
- 52:15of those really fun ones like les Petinuo for cash to the socks or weird
- 52:21reliever trades. But I thought to simplify our overall approach here and find some
- 52:28Fantasy discussion. What we're going to do is thankfully at at MLB dot com,
- 52:34Mike pitch Rielo went through and did a great job of ranking his twenty
- 52:37three best deals of the trade deadline. I was looking at the list and
- 52:43about through the first thirteen I think have relevant fantasy implications. So I think
- 52:47what we can do is we're going to run through the list and talk about
- 52:52those top thirteen trades and what sort of fantasy impacts we might have for those
- 52:57players going forward. So nothing to in depth, but we can do just
- 53:01kind of quick hits on both sides and kind of what we're doing in terms
- 53:06of those players from fantasy values going up or down. So the first trade
- 53:12that we have, I think is the pretty obvious biggest trade that happened over
- 53:15the deadline. We already touched on it, and that's Max Scherzer going Rangers
- 53:20for for loose angel A Kunya. So Rangers and Mets get together on this
- 53:27trade through. What do you think for Scherzer and Akunya going forward? Yeah,
- 53:32I mean, so we just definitely covered a Kunya. I think he
- 53:37you know, if you're in the dynasty format, I think he's definitely a
- 53:39good piece to have, but I don't think the value for a Kunya changes
- 53:45much at this point in time. Maybe there's a slight downgrade if you want
- 53:51to call it, there for the potential lineup that he joins when he does
- 53:54get called up in a year, year and a half time frame, you
- 53:58know, not being in Texas with that, with that ballpark, with that
- 54:01pretty strong lineup, with those opportunities. You know, I think that would
- 54:05have would have been better for him, But I don't think it's a substantial,
- 54:07substantial change. Uh. Scherzer, on the other hand, you know,
- 54:12I I like the move for for Scherzer. Uh. And we're not
- 54:16going deepening analysis here because you know, Scherzer, Uh, he's not had
- 54:20his best stuff this year. He's still Max Scherzer. Don't don't don't get
- 54:24me wrong, He's still been a very very good pitcher. But you know,
- 54:30we have to recognize that, Uh, he's he's not the same player
- 54:34he once was. He's is thirty nine years old. You know, maybe
- 54:37maybe uh starting to see a slowdown. We have seen the velocity drop a
- 54:43little this year. But I think for me, uh, Max Jerser gets
- 54:46a pretty good bump here, just because He's going from a losing team to
- 54:51a winning team, a team that is in the race. And I think,
- 54:54of of all the players that we're probably gonna talk about in this segment,
- 54:59of the players that actually run on adrenaline mad, Max is definitely that
- 55:05guy. And so, um, yeah, he's not had his his best
- 55:08year. He's still um, you know, striking out ten guys per nine.
- 55:13He's really struggling this year with his walks. He's at two and a
- 55:15half per nine when he's you know, last few years he's been under under
- 55:17two. Um, you know, he's he's had a little, uh,
- 55:22like I said, tickdown velocity, so his his ear as up a little
- 55:25bit. But I think that he easily could run run off a string of
- 55:30you know, quality starts here, pick up a number of wins, rack
- 55:36up the strikeouts. Um. Even though I think that ballpark I didn't look
- 55:38at the ballpark factors before we talked to here. I think that you know,
- 55:40Texas uh there, you know historically that they're their old ballpark there,
- 55:45thinks out him. I think it's a little bit more moderated, uh,
- 55:47with with the Globe Life field there. So I, like Max, I
- 55:52think it's a it's a good move for his fantasy value. Um, but
- 55:55it's like I said, it's not a big park factor or anything like that.
- 55:58It's really driving the value. I really think it's the pen race and
- 56:00somebody like mad Max is really gonna jump in and go going with two feet
- 56:06and try to make a splash here for the last two months of the season.
- 56:09Yeah, I totally agree. I think you hate hit it right on
- 56:12the head with Max and the Rangers. Current park is a little worse for
- 56:19home run factor than City Field, but I think otherwise everything else is spot
- 56:23on for Akunya. I'm a little bit bummed. I thought there was a
- 56:27chance that the Rangers were going to bring him up this year. They were
- 56:30playing them a center and when the Rangers were struggling to find outfield players,
- 56:35it looked like a Cuna might come up and help them. And he's just
- 56:38going to be PEERSTI on basis when he does come up, but I think
- 56:42that's probably sometime late next year. So sticking with the Mets trading starting pitching,
- 56:49the next trade on Petreolo's list is Justin Burlander to the Astros for Drew
- 56:53Gilbert and Brian Clifford. Thoughts there. Brew. Yeah, I think it's
- 56:59a similar similar kind of view. I if I had to go between the
- 57:06two of those of guys that I'm more concerned with, I think I'd say
- 57:07I'm a little bit more concerned with Verlander. You know, he really had
- 57:13has dropped off a little bit of the season as far as the underlied metrics,
- 57:15his strikeout rates are are definitely being impacted. But you have to like
- 57:22him going back to Houston. You're going back to somewhere that you've had success.
- 57:25You know how to pitch there, you you you know the coach staff,
- 57:29you know the team, uh, you know. So you have to
- 57:31think that that actually plays really well bodes well for for his landing spot.
- 57:37But at the end of the day, I don't know that his value jumps
- 57:40up or drops down h too much. Either way. Maybe there's a little
- 57:45bit more opportunity for for Wins, uh for there for him, But I
- 57:50see this one more as kind of a neutral move for Verlander. How about
- 57:53how about you? Yeah, I think so as well, Like, obviously
- 57:59you're going to get the boy Wins, but I mean he's still kind of
- 58:01roundading into form with his shoulder injury from earlier in the year, and so
- 58:06I think he could be better for the Astros, but I think he'll be
- 58:09more so because he's just healthier again, and so we'll see what happens there.
- 58:15On the prospect side, Drew Gilbert is definitely the sexier name there.
- 58:22He came out of Tennessee and has been rising through the Astros minor league system.
- 58:27Looked like he could debut this year, but honestly, I'm more interested
- 58:31in Ryan Clifford. Ryan Clifford is a nineteen year old and advanced A ball
- 58:36right now. He's a left left corner guy that honestly, I think he's
- 58:42a better fantasy player than he is probably a real life player, because his
- 58:47tools on Grand Graphs are future forty hit, future sixty game power and only
- 58:54a future fifty field but a current thirty field. So he's got a one
- 58:59thirty eight RC plus and a advanced A ball right now, and it's just
- 59:04crushing. The ball is kind of two seventy six ice down there with sixteen
- 59:08homers, So I am really interested to see what Ryan Clifford can do and
- 59:15if that stat line got An advanced A ball is just a product of the
- 59:22environment and some of those teams in that league are playing at elevation and definitely
- 59:29in pretty warm spots. So I'm pretty excited about what Clifford could be.
- 59:32But it's probably two years away, I would think, probably not coming up
- 59:37to twenty twenty five. Yeah, I think I think you're right there.
- 59:42There's there as you know, especially in the dynasty formats or you know,
- 59:45keeper leagues where're keeping my minor leaguers. I think there's some guys that there
- 59:47are worse keeping an eye on, or or taking a gamble on from that
- 59:52deal for sure. Yeah. How about I'm going to toss the next one
- 59:54at you, being the president White Sox expert here, Lucas Giolito, Ronaldo
- 1:00:00Lopez going to uh to the Angels from from the White Sox for Edgar Quero,
- 1:00:07who we talked about a little bit earlier in Kyle Bush. What are
- 1:00:10your thoughts here? Yeah, I mean, I think it's a really good
- 1:00:15trade for the Socks ultimately. I mean, Giolito has been all right this
- 1:00:22year. You know, his ear ray currently stands. This does include the
- 1:00:24start right now with the Angels that he kind of scuffled through against the Braves,
- 1:00:31But I don't know if I would have been started him in Atlanta anyway.
- 1:00:36So he has a three eighty five year a M the season right now,
- 1:00:38but he's got a four or five five fifth and that's a lot closer.
- 1:00:43But he looked like last year as well as like his strike at rate
- 1:00:46has been down and then this year it's been hovering in the mid to upper
- 1:00:52nines. And that's what it would during last year that he had that terrible
- 1:00:55four point nine year ray. The Bucca Giolito that turned into the Ace was
- 1:01:01coming along at eleven point six and at twelve point k nine in twenty nineteen
- 1:01:07and twenty twenty, and so I think that's gone. He's lost a lot
- 1:01:12of his velocity. I don't I just don't know if he's got like many
- 1:01:16more tools left in his bag in terms of things that he can bust out
- 1:01:21and find another gear. That was really the big concern when he's coming over
- 1:01:27from Washington to the Socks originally, and I think he kind of made the
- 1:01:30changes he could that, Like I wish him well, Like he's going home
- 1:01:36relatively. He's from the LA area, and Anaheim isn't LA, but it's
- 1:01:40Ish, and so I think it's going to be a good pickup for the
- 1:01:45Angels compared to what they got, and it'll be good to get into a
- 1:01:50better part for him. Although Angel Stadium is not quite the picture park that
- 1:01:55it's known for, but it is better than Chicago. But I would expect
- 1:02:00a downgrade overall in my Gileado value, just between the kind of like change
- 1:02:06environment and um, just the pressure kind of being put on him. Like,
- 1:02:10I think the Angels have a really brittle stretch coming up, so I
- 1:02:14think that might eat him alive. Yeah, I think with Gilto, unfortunately,
- 1:02:19you know, a guy that had so much hype when when he was
- 1:02:22drafted and the potential coming up in the minors with with with the Nationals,
- 1:02:25I think we did see the best of him, you know in that uh
- 1:02:30twenty nineteen, you know, twenty twenty time frame, and uh, you
- 1:02:35know, we made a spoiled um because I think, you know, the
- 1:02:38best philocity of his career also had a little bit of luck on the side.
- 1:02:43You know, things ended up all coming kind of together for him.
- 1:02:45I think it's ultimately kind of set expectations higher than they probably should be,
- 1:02:50and so a lot of folks, I think talk about Gieledo as an ace,
- 1:02:52and I don't toss around ace lightly. I think there are maybe you
- 1:02:57know, ten five aces in the league. It's not like thirty of them.
- 1:03:00So I think that if if you're expecting Julie that he has been this
- 1:03:06year, uh and in last year, and that's the guy that you're trading
- 1:03:10for, you know, a mid rotation starter who's going to give you some
- 1:03:15Indians, then I think you're happy. But anything more than that, I
- 1:03:19agree with you, is not going to be too exciting. Yeah, alright,
- 1:03:23what about the let's let's talk about the other part of this trade from
- 1:03:28a fantasy value perspective is what it ultimately means for ensuring and it's not just
- 1:03:35this trade. I think we also have other trades uh that kind of ensured
- 1:03:38this for the White Sox, but ensuring the closure of the future. And
- 1:03:40we kind of talked about that, um, you know, in the opening.
- 1:03:45But what's your what's your outlook for Gregory Santos? I like Santos as
- 1:03:50a closer going forward that I've been kind of covering him in my wife Beliar
- 1:03:54piece the past few weeks just to mention that he's stailable and would open up
- 1:04:00for him. That Santos Is he's got the stuff like when you watch it,
- 1:04:05he's just got the electric fastball. He has found his command this year
- 1:04:11that you know he's got it only an eight nine nine, but it's a
- 1:04:15one nine three walk uper nine, So he's been able to throw it into
- 1:04:19the zone more than he has traditionally, and he's controlling runners that way.
- 1:04:25So I think he looks great whenever he's in there. I love that he
- 1:04:28wears, um, where's these Jordans cleats? Like he retro fitted some Jordan's
- 1:04:34with cleats on the bottom and if it's really cool. But I think he's
- 1:04:39a good solid closer that like the just the overall presence on the mound is
- 1:04:45great and he's not going to be the flashiest in terms of strikeout potential,
- 1:04:50but I think going forward he's got a pretty good lock on the job.
- 1:04:56Yeah, I tend to degree. Hopefully, hopefully you guys were paying attention
- 1:05:00and picked him up, because he should be a good one the rest of
- 1:05:02the way for when the White Sox are are are in the games. Yeah,
- 1:05:09it does help playing against the Taggers and the Royals and the Guardians and
- 1:05:15um, it's an easier spedal, so they'll squeak out some months. I
- 1:05:17think, yeah, yeah. Back to Petrello's list, we got fourth on
- 1:05:23the list. Blue Jays acquired Jordan Hicks from the Cardinals, from minor leaguers
- 1:05:27Adam Klaffenstein and some pro bercy or Robertsy. I think we can totally ignore
- 1:05:32the Cardinals return. But um, what do you think in terms of the
- 1:05:36Blue Jays with joining Robano going down, joining Hicks comeing in, and with
- 1:05:40this also does to the Cardinals full punt. Yeah, so I think you're
- 1:05:44here, minor leaguers here, and ignore our poor pronunciations of any minor leaguers
- 1:05:49just getting out of the way for future as I looked down the list,
- 1:05:53But um, yeah, Jordan Hicks here probably at the peak of his game
- 1:05:58right now. That said, he is set up man. As soon as
- 1:06:00Jordan Romano comes back, he's eligibles returns from the sabled list on August thirteenth
- 1:06:08year, so just about ten days away. And you know, it looks
- 1:06:11like he you know, he just started a flat ground throwing today, so
- 1:06:15there there is a good likelihood he is back win first eligible. So he
- 1:06:18got about a week and a half year of of Jordan Hicks saves potential,
- 1:06:23but after that, you know, he is relegated. He is not taking
- 1:06:26that role from Jordan Romano. So definitely a downgrade for for Hicks. Um
- 1:06:30the rest of the season. Um. Now on the flip side of for
- 1:06:34the for the Cardinals, uh, we have Giovanni Guayaegos is most likely the
- 1:06:40closer for now. Uh Jojo Romero's kind of stuck around that area as well.
- 1:06:45I'm not I'm not investing there. I'm not thinking that he ends up
- 1:06:48being the long term solution. But ultimately Gayegos is just the bridge to Ryan
- 1:06:54Helsley when when he gets back. Um, you know, not not certain
- 1:07:00the time frame on Helsley, but you know he should be back before too
- 1:07:04long. I think he's actually starting to slowly ramp activity up if if I
- 1:07:10recall correctly, So I think you know, at the end of the day,
- 1:07:15Um, you know, the probably the biggest recipient of value ends up
- 1:07:18being Helsley, just because you know, when he makes it back, he
- 1:07:21is that Cardinals full time closed room in my opinion, so he's going to
- 1:07:26get the biggest bang for your buck. There is just a question of how
- 1:07:30much of the Cardinals rush him back versus make sure that he's ready, because
- 1:07:34you know, at the end of the day, they are out of the
- 1:07:36race, and you know they're they're not gonna want to sacrifice any any risk
- 1:07:41to one of their most electric arms for the rest of the season. Yeah,
- 1:07:45and it's funny that this time last week we weren't even like we put
- 1:07:49Picks to the side because they just announced their training to the Cardinals were trying
- 1:07:54to engage Hicks and a long term deal, and we didn't think that he
- 1:07:57would be moving. But I think what we both said was, let's please,
- 1:08:01don't please don't sign him into a long term deal. I don't think
- 1:08:03that's a great move. So I'm not sure what he was asking for,
- 1:08:06but it seems that that works worked as we would have expected if we were
- 1:08:13running the club. Yeah. The other thing with Helsley, though, is
- 1:08:16I'm a little bit worried that it's going a little bit of William Hendrix's route,
- 1:08:21that this is the second or third time Helsley is hit the I l
- 1:08:27with a bocky elbow now and so it grows very hard and he's had a
- 1:08:31Tommy John before, I'm pretty sure, and it I'm worried, so I
- 1:08:36would be careful that if you're able to handcuff with Gaya Yos, that's huge,
- 1:08:42um, because who knows, maybe Helsley doesn't even ever come back.
- 1:08:45It's a lawsuit for the Cardinals. Yeah, I have since some of the
- 1:08:48beat writers in Saint Louis making those comments that it's just generally the cardinal's breast
- 1:08:54is not fully confident what they'll have with helsleyn and he will be back and
- 1:09:00can he stay healthy long term? So I think it's a very fair fair
- 1:09:03concern. You know, he is the guy when he's healthy, but as
- 1:09:08we all know, health in this game is not guaranteed. And sometimes you
- 1:09:13you rely on a guy a little bit too much and you just wait for
- 1:09:15him to come back the whole time, when you're better off just looking the
- 1:09:17other way and investing elsewhere. Yeah, definitely. So getting back to the
- 1:09:24overall list of the fifth one that we have is Aaron Sivali to the rays
- 1:09:30for Kwanzarto where to call it covered Kalmanzarto a little bit in the last section
- 1:09:34and said that we didn't like him. So what do you think about Aaron
- 1:09:38Sivali? Uh yeah, yeah. I look at the two names here,
- 1:09:43and you know, at the end of the day, neither one really excites
- 1:09:46me. Savali has really just never been the guy that brings that the strikeouts
- 1:09:50you need, the consistency you need, even if it wasn't a high strikeout
- 1:09:56guy, you know, keeping your your ratios in track. He's just not
- 1:10:00that. He is more of your better uh for the typical better uh real
- 1:10:03world player than fantasy player. He's going to give some Indians he's he's kind
- 1:10:08of is a I say, a little bit of bulldog on the mound,
- 1:10:10not from a stats perspective, but just kind of goes out there and does
- 1:10:14what he has to do, gets we contact groundballs, things like that.
- 1:10:15I really do think the bigger impact of this deal is, uh, you
- 1:10:21know, the the Ray's optioning Tash Bradley, uh to to triple A.
- 1:10:28Now, Bradley has been pretty pretty rough as of late. Uh you know,
- 1:10:32he probably the last month or so, he's really not done a lot.
- 1:10:36Haven't look at this the stats, but he you know, he's given
- 1:10:40up five earned his last start. Uh you know, he only has one
- 1:10:45start in his last six starts where he was given up Actually two starts less
- 1:10:49than four runs, so he's been pretty rough as of late, and so
- 1:10:55that that's the guy that I think takes the biggest hit here because he had
- 1:10:59even though he's been rough, he has quite a bit of upside for the
- 1:11:03raise. So at the end of the day that I had a whole lot
- 1:11:06happening from from this trade as far as fantasy values, like tes Bradley takes
- 1:11:11a little bit a hit for for the rest of the year because it looks
- 1:11:14like the Rays since they're they're they're competing, they're not messing around. If
- 1:11:17you're if you're struggling, you're gonna gonna push the side. Yeah, I
- 1:11:23mean, I think Sivali maybe takes a little bit of a hit and value
- 1:11:28for me, just mostly because of the movement in the division going from that
- 1:11:31week Al Central and going to the Al East. That I really liked Sivali
- 1:11:36as a really cheap late round option and he's paid off this year with some
- 1:11:42great ratio work in terms of a two thirty four RRA and a one or
- 1:11:47four whip um. The case have been weak, just say the least at
- 1:11:55six seven K nine, but that ratio work doesn't get better it's but it's
- 1:12:00come against the Tiberries and the Orioles Twins and the Socks, and so now
- 1:12:06that he's throwing against the Red Sox and the Yankees and um, the Orioles
- 1:12:12sound and Stretch Blue Jays, Like, we'll see if he gets hit a
- 1:12:15little harder. But like you said, he limits hard contact. That's his
- 1:12:19big things. So if he's able to do that against weak group opponents,
- 1:12:25to you think that he can still do that for a little bit against more
- 1:12:29difficult opponents. Yeah, you're right, you know, And I'm one that
- 1:12:34you know, just can't invest the guys that aren't getting the strikeouts. So
- 1:12:39even if you're helping the ratios, it is hard, hard to look the
- 1:12:43other way with with the lack of strikeouts. But still still a guy that
- 1:12:47maybe in the back end of your rotations worth you know, keeping around doing
- 1:12:50the spot starts, but probably not doing starts. And I'm surprised to say
- 1:12:54this against like the Orioles of all teams in that in that division. Yeah,
- 1:13:00Okay, the next one another Cardinals trade number six, Mark Join Montgomery
- 1:13:03and Chris Stratton going to the Rangers for John Kane to co of Robie and
- 1:13:09Thomas Sagassy, What do you think they're brew? Yeah, I think,
- 1:13:14um, you know, for for Montgomery leaving the Cardinals, I struggle with
- 1:13:20this one. You can argue I think both ways and his value. Cardinals
- 1:13:24have an extremely good defense traditionally, it hasn't been as good this year,
- 1:13:30so I think you know that that's held ratios down. Saint Louis is more
- 1:13:32of a pitchers park than than the hitters park going to the Rangers, you
- 1:13:36know, maybe or a neutral environment, so that might be a little step
- 1:13:41back there that doesn't maybe have the same defense, but still a pretty pretty
- 1:13:44solid team there in Texas. Um that set. I think Montgomery has just
- 1:13:48been a released solid pitcher. Uh. You know, velocity is up this
- 1:13:53year. You know, he's still getting ground balls so that you you know,
- 1:13:57usually does uh strike up about the eight per nine, and so you
- 1:14:01know, I think he's maybe a level maybe slightly up value just because the
- 1:14:05extra wins potential, um, and you can't discount the excitement of the Pennant
- 1:14:11race. Um. And ever since Montgomery left New York, it just seems
- 1:14:15like the less lights, you know, the less uh spotlight being put on
- 1:14:19him, he's really responded well maybe I would say a little bit uh less
- 1:14:24harsh markets from a fan based perspective, and so I think that that still
- 1:14:29applies moving moving to Texas, and you know you also have to think,
- 1:14:32you know, he's he's joining uh pretty good other incoming trade partner there,
- 1:14:38um, and you know he might be able to learn something from a certain
- 1:14:43mister Scherzer and that that would be good for him. You know. You
- 1:14:46know, I just say he had probably a pretty good tutor and Adam Wayne
- 1:14:49right there in Saint Louis as well, so maybe he can pick something up.
- 1:14:54But I really like that personally to me, that the actually more interesting
- 1:14:57part of this trade. Um is I really from a dynasty perspective, Um,
- 1:15:01I'm really interested in and I'm gonna I'm gonna butcher his name, Thomas
- 1:15:08um Segassi. However, that's not the route I thought you're gonna go.
- 1:15:14I thought you're gonna go with Robi. But yeah, I know, actual,
- 1:15:17yeah, I see. Um. You know, he's he's really seemed
- 1:15:20to come on this year and um, as of late, he's been hitting,
- 1:15:27he's hitting well. I mean he's a twenty one year old in in
- 1:15:30double A. Um, you know he was a fifth round pick in that
- 1:15:34twenty twenty draft, so you want to say he was the last round of
- 1:15:38the twenty twenty draft. Was that shortened draft, you know, but he's
- 1:15:43one of those guys that UM seems to just have a really solid profile.
- 1:15:47UM. He's hit roughly three hundred every stop of the miners. You know,
- 1:15:51he seems to have a power that translates really well. Uh, he
- 1:15:56had hit fifteen homers in just ninety three games for were the Rangers at double
- 1:16:01A club there, and you know, from a perspective, he does seem
- 1:16:06to get on base. UM. Strikeouts aren't too big of a concern.
- 1:16:12A low twenty strikeout rate, UM, And I think if I recall it,
- 1:16:15I'd have to go back and look at splits that he has really turned
- 1:16:19it on as of late and really shown some some you know, good power
- 1:16:27actual and real games. Now. He I don't think he's a great fielder
- 1:16:30from from what I've seen, So he might have trouble finding a spot um
- 1:16:34of where he's gonna to fit long term. But if any team can deal
- 1:16:40with that, that's the Cardinals, who just like to move everybody around,
- 1:16:43and they've actually got some pretty good utility players. So I actually really like
- 1:16:46him as somebody to keep an eye on a long term there. So I
- 1:16:50went I went left when when you thought I was going right with Robi,
- 1:16:54But so what are your thoughts there and Roby? I thought you would go
- 1:16:57Roby. I like Roby a lot, even though he does have a five
- 1:17:00or five. You're Ray down in double A right now for Texas. He's
- 1:17:04had a three eighty five fifth, and a lot of that is because his
- 1:17:10left on base rate down in double A right now, sixty two point five
- 1:17:14percent. He's got a three forty nine babbit, so goad Book is giving
- 1:17:18him up. He's got a real big fastball. He sits in the mid
- 1:17:21nineties and Eric longenhanged from far and Graphs compares him to a less physical Hunter
- 1:17:29Brown football, and his latest prospect report, his original ETA was supposed to
- 1:17:32be twenty twenty five. But I think the Cardinals they need this pitching now.
- 1:17:36They're going to push him up now. And maybe not for this year,
- 1:17:41but I could see him debuting pretty quickly in twenty twenty four. He
- 1:17:44is a top one hundred prospects for fan Graphs overall, sixty fourth overall and
- 1:17:50so he's can probably hold something around like an eight, nine, ten,
- 1:17:57K nine in the majors based on kind of play he's been trending now.
- 1:18:00And so I think I like Robie is like almost like a Jack Clarity replacement,
- 1:18:06like a clone, where you can he's going to be like a number
- 1:18:11three starter for Cardinals, and maybe like a could be like a five,
- 1:18:15like a four or five for a famous purposes. Yeah, I think I
- 1:18:20think, just in its a general sense, if I look at the Cardinals,
- 1:18:24I was looking earlier at the kind of what they had picked up,
- 1:18:27and I think they actually, you know, i'd consider them well of winners
- 1:18:30at the deadline. You know, I think they added I think was seven
- 1:18:33players into their top thirty prospects at at the deadline, four of those being
- 1:18:39the top ten. So really a good retooling for a system that had had
- 1:18:43actually shot out a fair number of guys. And so I think that I
- 1:18:47may say something more about the deplete, how the depleted the system was more
- 1:18:51than the quality they got back. I'm not sure which way I want to
- 1:18:55read that one, but definitely some interesting guys and back that they look like
- 1:19:00and they're guys, and I think the Cardinals tend to do this. They're
- 1:19:03not guys that are far off. That's kind of an emo of Mosailock there
- 1:19:09in Saint louis Is. He kind of likes to bring the guys that are
- 1:19:11a little bit closer, a little bit more certain. Even in you know,
- 1:19:15drafts, he's drafting college hitters a lot more than what they they used
- 1:19:19to do. So um, interesting to see what the where that system goes
- 1:19:25over the next year, year, a year and a half. Yeah,
- 1:19:28exactly. So moving on to the next trade, still a Cardinal flavor with
- 1:19:32Randall gridcheck here. The seventh trade, Angels acquire CJ. Crone and Randol
- 1:19:38Gridek from Rockies for minor leakers Mason Albright and Jake Madden. I don't even
- 1:19:45think they need to do discussion on this one. I'm just gonna CJ crone
- 1:19:47and Randall good track or leave in Colorado. They're gonna play a short sightetoons
- 1:19:54just like it's bad. So it's good for ale only pickups maybe if you're
- 1:19:59desperate, but otherwise, uh, I'm cutting c J. Crone and Brando
- 1:20:03Great took any place I had them because I was streaming them in Colorado.
- 1:20:06Essentially, Yeah, and you have to think on the on the inverse side,
- 1:20:11you know, and it makes sense for Colorado bringing in two pitchers,
- 1:20:15but downgrades just inherently go into Colorado. Um, I don't you know,
- 1:20:21didn't didn't look too deep into those and I think there are actually some some
- 1:20:25decent young arms. Um, but you know, bringing bringing in those those
- 1:20:29guys, uh to try to continuously fight that ever ending problem of pitching pitching
- 1:20:34in the Rockies. So well, we'll see if they if these two were
- 1:20:39the saviors, but you know, whatever nast value they had definitely took a
- 1:20:43hit. Yeah, and even for the Rockies, I don't think that the
- 1:20:45impact fantasy wise is that huge because, uh like Michael Tolia and Alhiris Montero
- 1:20:53are kind of stepping into roles right now. But Charlie Blackman's going to be
- 1:20:56back soon and it's just a matter of time before they buried the guys back
- 1:21:00on the depth chart. So I'm not even trying to do too much with
- 1:21:04Colorado until black Man comes back and that lineup gets a little more said up
- 1:21:09again, I have to agree, I think we can. I think that
- 1:21:12was a good one to just power right through. Yeah, this next one
- 1:21:15I think should be pretty easy too, just because it's pretty straightforward. Number
- 1:21:19eight was Himer cleaned Lario going to the Cubs from the Nationals for Kevin Maid
- 1:21:26and DJ hers Brew. Are you much of the Candelario guy and what do
- 1:21:30you think about his value now going forward with the Cubs. Yeah, Historically
- 1:21:34I really have not been much of a kind of Lario guy. You know,
- 1:21:38he to me, he has middling power, He's always been in middling
- 1:21:42lineups. Doesn't have a whole lot of speed, is you know, at
- 1:21:46best, So I would say a two fifty hitter, and so he just
- 1:21:51he's be a streaky hitter, which should I think is what excites people at
- 1:21:56times is that he'll all of a sudden, you know, go for a
- 1:21:59week or two, uh, smash three or four home runs, you know,
- 1:22:02and and he's got some good power when he actually makes that connection,
- 1:22:05right. Um. But you know, he's having a good season right now.
- 1:22:10Um. Overall, you know, he's he's likely on the path to
- 1:22:14a career high in the home runs. UM. But at the end of
- 1:22:18the day, not a guy that necessarily excites me too much. UM for
- 1:22:24and especially you know, moving over to UH to the Cubs there. Um,
- 1:22:30there's just not a whole lot of protection that lineup right now. Um,
- 1:22:35and you know I could see, uh, you know that a little
- 1:22:40bit of crowd there. You know the first base, their base. You
- 1:22:43know, DH type type position. So, um, how about you?
- 1:22:47Are you a candelario guy only in a break case or break gas, break
- 1:22:55glass the case of emergency. That's so much harder to say on a pot
- 1:23:00asked than you would ever imagine, great glass case of emergency type of player
- 1:23:04that like, if you're desperate, all the injuries have happened at third base
- 1:23:09in corner that's not getting them. But that's about it. And so he
- 1:23:13gets a little bit of a boostable value going to a better team. But
- 1:23:16overall, I agree like he's a pretty middling hitter in terms of fantasy value,
- 1:23:21and so it's not someone I'm usually looking to target because even when he
- 1:23:26is in there, he's not occurring enough runs an RBI for you to really
- 1:23:30make it worth it that I'm trying to pop something a little bit bigger in
- 1:23:33terms of stolen bases or home runs out of that spot. Instead, I
- 1:23:41think he's a nail on ahead on that one. Yeah, Yeah, the
- 1:23:44next trade this one. Yeah, back to the paying train here at number
- 1:23:49nine, Marlin's acquired Jake Burger from the White Sox for Jake Edder trade of
- 1:23:55the Jake's. What do you think about Jake Burger being on the Marlins down
- 1:23:58said have the Sox. Yeah, I don't know that there's a huge value
- 1:24:02change for me, uh for for Burger moving to to the Marlins from from
- 1:24:08the Socks. You know, I think he he's really coming to his own
- 1:24:12as far as power this year, I think that's really gonna be his calling
- 1:24:15card. Um. I just I don't see a big difference in the in
- 1:24:18the lineup. Um. If anything, I actually kind of liked where what
- 1:24:23he had in Chicago. As far as the lineups are come certain, I
- 1:24:26think he had a little bit more rum producing potential. Um. The Marlins
- 1:24:31lineup might be a little bit more even keeled overall, it might be like
- 1:24:34a better baseball team. Um. But as far as like, you know,
- 1:24:38potential, you know, being in the thick of the middle lineup,
- 1:24:41I think, you know, as Burger tended to be with the White Sox,
- 1:24:44I think he had a little bit more run production but potential. So
- 1:24:46I think he's still gonna, you know, keep producing, keep laying well.
- 1:24:49That ballparking in Miami is is cavernous. Um, so I haven't looked
- 1:24:56to see. Um. Maybe will we chat here, I'll pull up Baseball
- 1:25:00Savant to see you know, if if he had hit all his home runs
- 1:25:04in Miami, how many of those would actually have left the ballpark. That's
- 1:25:10always a fun little thing to look at. So relatively for me, it's
- 1:25:14it's kind of a non event. But I'm also not a card carrying member
- 1:25:20of the Jake Burger fan club like like yourself. So um, yeah,
- 1:25:26relatively neutral. I think Burger's having a really really good year. Um,
- 1:25:30and makes sense why Miami looked to to bring him a little bit surprised to
- 1:25:34your point that he would he was traded there, So I did. Did
- 1:25:39you pull up the the Baseball Savant chart? And he actually looks like a
- 1:25:47relatively even keel uh as far as his power played plays pretty consistently uh in
- 1:25:56Miami relative to the Socks. Maybe a slight drop back for him. Um,
- 1:26:02you know, he's just with with way his swing. Uh. From
- 1:26:06from what I what I can tell for him, he's an all or nothing
- 1:26:12kind of power guy. So ballpark doesn't matter nearly as much as some the
- 1:26:15guys who are just giving him over the fence. Um, he's maybe probably
- 1:26:19about half half of his stuff, is no doubt, or the second l
- 1:26:21he's the bat. Yeah, And overall, Jake Burger's value is gonna dip
- 1:26:29because it's a much worse part to hit in. The one thing to keep
- 1:26:33in mind is if you're in it, and i'll only league, I think
- 1:26:36he's the best bat to cross the al in Ol line. So he's gonna
- 1:26:43be your your bad Banianza guy, probably because there's really not a better bat
- 1:26:47if you are looking for one. So the other thing is a really good
- 1:26:51point, like in all only leagues, you know, or that he's he's
- 1:26:55actually probably a really big target because if you need that power, Um,
- 1:27:00he's gonna be the best bet you have. Yeah. And then going forward,
- 1:27:03I think he's pretty useless in vix LEAs just because of the park change,
- 1:27:08and he was already getting there because he's kind of Gallo esque with his
- 1:27:12two fourteen batting average. And the one thing I would watch is that if
- 1:27:16he's tweaking that k rate at all with the Marlins, it was at thirty
- 1:27:21one point six percent overall with the White Sox. He's a really aggressive hitter.
- 1:27:27If they get him to tamper that down and be a little more selective
- 1:27:30than that could lead to a better batting average. And he has the speed
- 1:27:35funny enough, he's like seventy five percent pile and speed to be able to
- 1:27:42actually like run a decent sized babbit if he's not, you know, just
- 1:27:47playing all for long balls, which he might not be able to in Miami.
- 1:27:54All right, chucking along, we're into double jis now ten. I
- 1:27:59think this one's gonna a pretty straightforward impact just because it's involving closers here,
- 1:28:02So Dbacks acquired Paul Sewald from the Mariners for Josh Rojas Dominic game Zone and
- 1:28:10Ryan Bliss. Any Where do you want to start? Which trader or which
- 1:28:16closer situation? Or maybe you want to talk about Josh Rojas Um? How
- 1:28:23do you know? You know me too? Well, I'm going to talk
- 1:28:26about Josh Rojas um and and I'll let you cover the closer piece of this
- 1:28:30one. And we you know, I'm it's a little bitter from our discussion
- 1:28:32earlier, so I'll let you take that. Um. But Josh Rohaus and
- 1:28:36it's probably it's not probably where you think. You know, folks might think
- 1:28:40I'm gonna go here. Is that Rojas I think has in the fantasy world
- 1:28:45traditionally had some hype. Uh He's he's kind of that guy that people you
- 1:28:49know expect to you know, be maybe a potential next year. He's gonna
- 1:28:55be that twenty twenty guy that you know hits two seventy and is just really
- 1:29:00like your your key middling fielder or uh, you know, outfielder, because
- 1:29:03he does have that a lot of positional flexibility. Um, but you know,
- 1:29:08he's definitely taking a step back this year. And so what I just
- 1:29:12want to caution about the you know, Josh Roe House going over. You
- 1:29:15know, the Mariners are taking a chance on him. And don't get me
- 1:29:17wrong this it feels like these two teams have traded before and in this aspect,
- 1:29:23I think a number of times actually these guys have picked up and it
- 1:29:28worked out well for both teams. I'm thinking of a you know, kind
- 1:29:30of like Miss Handeger I think was one of those that kind of went across
- 1:29:34it and did really well, um trying there was another one that I just
- 1:29:40uh ket Ketel Marte as well, guys just switching between these teams and then
- 1:29:44kind of taking off. I just don't see that with with Rojas. Um,
- 1:29:48you know, his his powers down this year. Uh, he's not
- 1:29:53making as good of contact. And then I was surprised as I was looking
- 1:29:58at him, his speed has really dropped off. You know, when when
- 1:30:01he came up in you know, twenty five, he was in the upper
- 1:30:04quarter of the league as far as you know, sprint speed, which was
- 1:30:10you know which great um. But you know at this point now, um,
- 1:30:15he's he's really almost down to the bottom third of the league as far
- 1:30:18as uh that that speed is concerned. And he really just seems to have
- 1:30:23kind of dropped off, um from a lot quicker than than we would have
- 1:30:27expected. So for a guy that you know, you're hoping has the power,
- 1:30:30but you always know he can bring the speed and kind of fill up
- 1:30:33the status sheet, I would just caution I don't think Rojas, even though
- 1:30:38you know the Mariners might be taking a chance on him and given him a
- 1:30:41spot to play, I don't I don't think he's really fantasy relevant at this
- 1:30:45point, gotcha, Yeah, No, And I think that's good to keep
- 1:30:48track of, especially since I think they officially were cutting go Long, so
- 1:30:55he should be entering his some story of time share at second base Yarrow and
- 1:31:00Posa Cavallero has really fallen off, so we'll see where that goes. Yeah,
- 1:31:03I think they're they're taking a gamble on him and hoping for a recovery.
- 1:31:08I think that's that's right. It's the right move to make, especially
- 1:31:11how poor Colton Long has been. I think they would just expected they would
- 1:31:15get more from him. So I think it makes sense for the Marriors the
- 1:31:17move they're making. I just think for fantasy owners, this is just a
- 1:31:20situation of a void. Yeah. And then in terms of the closer side
- 1:31:25for her the d Backs, thankfully we can all stop collectively spending all of
- 1:31:30our free agent dollars on chasing Diamondbacks closers between McGuff and Chapin and Miguel Castro
- 1:31:40and Ginkel who have all kind of sat in that role. So it's been
- 1:31:45a very good source of content for my waper wire every week. But Paul
- 1:31:48c Wald is the closer now and taking that role, I think does he
- 1:31:54have more control or see free agent? Do you know? I'm pretty sure
- 1:31:59that he had had more control. So that's great because he can stick there
- 1:32:02for a while. So if you've got some sort of peeper aspect Paul Sewald,
- 1:32:05that's a great landing spotform. And if you were the lucky person who
- 1:32:10was handcuffing Paul Sewald and Andres Minos together, you're lucky because now you've got
- 1:32:15two closers, and doesn't get better than those two. Honestly, they're probably
- 1:32:20both top like six or eight closers for me. Just the k rates are
- 1:32:29bananas, and so the Mariners are going to be a little weaker down the
- 1:32:33stretch wind wise and save wise, but Lumeos's strikeout rate array with are so
- 1:32:41amazing that he's going to be a huge asset. And Paul c Walds should
- 1:32:45see even more saves Arizona than if he was pore in Seattle. Yeah,
- 1:32:50I think you're right. I think both of those guys look look really good,
- 1:32:55really good options to have, And yeah, I'm glad that I'm no
- 1:33:00longer chasing Kevin Ginkel, Andrew Chaffin and everybody else under the sun, uh
- 1:33:06for for that team. And then speak speaking of you know the contracts,
- 1:33:12Uh, Paul Seawall looks like he's got one more year of arbitration. He
- 1:33:15is, you know, on the older side of of of players. He's
- 1:33:18actually thirty three years old. Um, took to a while of established himself
- 1:33:23and now he is. But so you know, there is a little bit
- 1:33:26of value beyond justice this year for Seawall. Then you have to think he
- 1:33:30you know, he's he's shown no reason that he won't continue to thrive there.
- 1:33:33And I'm right there with you on you knows as well, being probably
- 1:33:39that long term closer in Seattle. Yeah, um, all right, next
- 1:33:44one, the eleventh trade Dodgers are going to acquire or have acquired Lancelin,
- 1:33:48Joe Kelly from the Socks for Tracey Thompson, Nick Nastarini, and Jordan Leisure
- 1:33:56Leisure maybe Jordan Leisure. Um, I think Lancelin is the only person really
- 1:34:00that we have to care about from a fantasy perspective, because even like whoever
- 1:34:04the socks are backfilling the location for Lancelin, you don't want to touch him.
- 1:34:11So, so what do you think about Lancelin going to Tinseltown and what
- 1:34:16do you think it portends for his value? Yeah? I mean, have
- 1:34:20you I think of the day you think it has to help his value.
- 1:34:24Um, the problem is where's his value to start with? I think is
- 1:34:28the really the really big question. You know. So going over to the
- 1:34:33Dodgers, you know, and he's already had his first start up there going
- 1:34:38uh getting a win, going seven innings, only allowing three runs. So
- 1:34:42it looks like he's off to a to a really really good start. But
- 1:34:45he has been the epitome of the cardiac picture. Uh this season. Um,
- 1:34:50you know, yeah that out even just a while, you know what,
- 1:34:55four or five starts to go where he was unhittable to give of like
- 1:34:58one run, un struck out a lot guys and seven Indians. And then
- 1:35:01you know, since then he's got you know, he had three starts and
- 1:35:04you know two and we give up six runs, six runs, one give
- 1:35:08up another one up seven runs, and so uh, he's just a little
- 1:35:11bit all over the place. UM. I do tend to think that,
- 1:35:14you know, playing you know, you can kind of spot start him very
- 1:35:17well against the the the NL West there. Uh so if you're if you're
- 1:35:23looking, you know, he's gonna start out there in San Francisco, uh
- 1:35:27something like that. If you know, if the Rockies are coming to town,
- 1:35:30I'll probably wouldn't play him out in cours. I think that there's a
- 1:35:32really good spot start potential uh for uh someone like Lynn. Uh So his
- 1:35:39value does get better. But um, you know, the Lance Land we're
- 1:35:43looking at here still still gets the strikeouts. But I do think he's a
- 1:35:46bit of a wild card, uh as far as what you're gonna get every
- 1:35:50start. Uh So I wouldn't be investing with him as a guy that I'm
- 1:35:55gonna put my rotation every day, but definitely uh, selective spots starting is
- 1:36:00is really the calling card of of let out of this trade? Yeah,
- 1:36:04I mean I actually like I might be buying He looked it was Oakland last
- 1:36:11night. Okay, that's a spot started. I think Oakland qualifies. Yeah,
- 1:36:17but he looked really good last night. Seven inning, seven k's only
- 1:36:21one walk. His achilles hell has been the long ball, and he gave
- 1:36:26up three homewers last night. The thing that the Dodgers and everybody's calling for
- 1:36:32this is if the Dodgers can get him to go away from the fastball,
- 1:36:36go more towards this curveball, which it's Benna. It's a little tough to
- 1:36:41tell from last night that last night he went to the curveball twenty percent at
- 1:36:45the time when he's been going to it twelve percentage of the time with White
- 1:36:49Sox and he The biggest thing is that he really shaved down the cutter usage.
- 1:36:55I don't know if it was just a reading thing or if it actually
- 1:37:00was a cutter usage, but they only threw if four percent last night when
- 1:37:04he was throwing it in twenty five socks, So I don't know if I
- 1:37:12actually like that. Though his fastball's not good, like his regular fastball's only
- 1:37:16ninety two miles an hour, and I don't know, Like the Dodgers,
- 1:37:20you want to put faith in them, but they couldn't do it, know
- 1:37:24a synder guard and Lancelin kind of reminds me in terms of no a synder
- 1:37:29guard that he's just way past his time. And I think I'm still buying
- 1:37:33though, just because like they're gonna let him go, and this is a
- 1:37:39guy kind of like mad Max. For the motivation to play for a team
- 1:37:44is there. There were certainly starts that I watched Lancelin's this year where he
- 1:37:49totally gave up. It looked like he would just be hiking fastballs down the
- 1:37:54middle and looked frustrated and great to go home. And now that I think
- 1:37:58he's in a better situation, the Dodgers could find a better path for him.
- 1:38:04So I'm buying him that if he's out there, because I think there's
- 1:38:08lots of these that he was dropped in and if you're looking for somebody to
- 1:38:12stream especially, I think i'd take him just about every two start, so
- 1:38:18I would look to try to acquire him even despite all those things, because
- 1:38:23there's just a little bit of like magic dust. I think the Dodgers can
- 1:38:27sprinkle on him. If you do see that this crass ball is getting bounded
- 1:38:30in his next start and it's just not working, you can totally cut bait
- 1:38:34and you're going to be bad right back when you work, because I think
- 1:38:39Lancelin is pretty free and lots of places right now. Okay, another Cardinals
- 1:38:46x Cardinals picture that would come off to lots of Cardinals and socks. That's
- 1:38:50I'm having too much fun like discussing this as we're really going deep on this
- 1:38:56podcast. The twelfth one Jack Clarity to the Ores for ses Ar Preto and
- 1:39:00Drew Rom. I'll focus on Drew Rom a little bit just because I think
- 1:39:06he's a little bit like what I was talking about previously with the DoD with
- 1:39:13the with the Rangers deal when they brought up Robie. Ram isn't that same
- 1:39:18sort of mold. But I think he's going to be a little worse than
- 1:39:21Robie. Robie. I think it's just been having a good year. Ram
- 1:39:25has been struggling. He's really been struggling with blocks to Baltimore. But also
- 1:39:30see a little bit of the case of like a guy that just kind of
- 1:39:32stalls out in Triple A because he gets bored, like Jerrom that's probably staring
- 1:39:38up at the rotation in Baltimore and see likes a Pole Irvan and some of
- 1:39:43the other people that they've been trotting through there and wondering why it wasn't him.
- 1:39:46So I could see Drew Roum breaking camp with the Cardinals next year and
- 1:39:50they're starting rotation or honestly even getting a chance down the stretch. So keep
- 1:39:55your eyes on him as they kind of increases must patterns going forward. But
- 1:40:00I'll let you talk about Jack Clairty in which you think he's going to do
- 1:40:02in Baltimore. Yeah, I think there's two key things with Jack Flairty here.
- 1:40:10One, Jack Flaherty. Uh is is very much an emotional picture.
- 1:40:15Um so you know, sorry, deep fantasy analysis, we're really going here.
- 1:40:20But for a guy that really runs an emotion, you know, he
- 1:40:25lives in breeze. He is when he's on, he is on, he
- 1:40:29is scary, he is good. When he is off. You can just
- 1:40:31tell like he doesn't know where things going. Which is which is? I
- 1:40:34think the question for in here, you know, and I think uh going
- 1:40:39over to to Baltimore is actually really really good for him in that aspect.
- 1:40:45He that's as a young team, I'm not in the clubhouse by gap,
- 1:40:50have to think that they're jelling. They're having a heck of a lot of
- 1:40:54fun. They are, you know, taking on the big dogs in the
- 1:40:56in the al e. So I think that that's gonna be uh exxciting for
- 1:41:00him. And he frankly has been pitching better as of late. Uh last
- 1:41:04you know, six starts, he's ear a just barely over over three.
- 1:41:10You know, he's uh not the front line ace that folks you know want
- 1:41:15him to be in the Cardinals expecting to be. If he was, the
- 1:41:17Cardinals wouldn't be be letting him go. But I think he's the kind of
- 1:41:21guy that definitely could ramp it up for the stretch run here and really make
- 1:41:26an impact. So I actually see Flarity's value going up just because I think
- 1:41:32he's going to get into that Pennant race and he has been pitching better as
- 1:41:36of late. Keep an eye on on the the his velocity, see,
- 1:41:42you know, it has been trending down slowly the last few years, and
- 1:41:45so let's see if you know, he gets out there and makes a starter
- 1:41:49or two and then he's got that velocity pumping up. Just based on a
- 1:41:53pure adjournalin, I think there's something to something to like here. So um,
- 1:41:58like I said, he's pitching better as late, he's going to a
- 1:42:00good situation, he's going to a good team, and I think the Pennant
- 1:42:03Race is really going to going to motivate him. So I would look for
- 1:42:08Clarity to to do well the rest of the season. Yeah, I think
- 1:42:14I agree that. I was worried that he might end up in a a
- 1:42:16beef role somewhere, but Baltimore needs starters, so it was a good landing
- 1:42:19spot for him. I think he's gonna love pitching in Baltimore in front of
- 1:42:23that giant, deep left field fens that they have and so um, yeah,
- 1:42:30I think he's a good pickup as well. Another guy that I mean,
- 1:42:33he's crossing the ALNL border. Obviously he's not gonna have the value that
- 1:42:40Shares are in Burlander have, but as those people are looking at Burlander and
- 1:42:44Sharser, you could sneak in hopefully a lower bid on clarity. And I
- 1:42:49like him better than Jordan Montgomery. And Jordan Montgomery might you think might be
- 1:42:55going for more money, I would focus maybe on throw of those slots jack
- 1:43:00player instead. Yeah, I think there actually is something to be said for
- 1:43:02a stratrategy, you know, in an AL only league, if if you
- 1:43:05need pitching, maybe skipping Scherzer and Verlander and just trying to grab you know,
- 1:43:12Montgomery and Flaherty. Um, it depends on what you're after all,
- 1:43:15you need one guy you're going after max Um. But if you if you're
- 1:43:19needing innings, if you're if you're needing and you're looking for a shot in
- 1:43:21the arm, uh, you know, upside plays, you know, I
- 1:43:26think there's there's a case to be said for letting everybody look at those big
- 1:43:30guys and you can actually probably swing in and grab some some pretty good value
- 1:43:32picks here. Yeah, okay, number thirteen. We made it to the
- 1:43:38thirteen, So the thirteen. I don't even know if there's really any fancy
- 1:43:44impact here, but I mostly want to talk about my man Dick Mountain Padres
- 1:43:47and player Richell and g Manchoy from the Pirates for Jackson, Wolf, Alfonzo
- 1:43:53Rivis and es Tor swarow Um. I think the biggest thing is Richell gets
- 1:43:58his thirteenth team this way. It is so he's closing in on Edwin Jackson's
- 1:44:02record, and we'll see if he can pull that off. But I don't
- 1:44:09know if I want Richill, Like Richill is a guy that you're looking to
- 1:44:15maybe used during two start weeks, but otherwise it can really blow up on
- 1:44:19you just because he's throwing that slow basketball and if he hangs a couple of
- 1:44:25curves, it could leave the part pretty quick. Gi man CHOI should be
- 1:44:29slotting into a benchual for the Padres. So anything you see outside of what
- 1:44:34I was just going up with Richill and many there, yeah, I'll say
- 1:44:39gimn Hoy I might be worth keeping a little bit of an eye on.
- 1:44:42I'm not there's nobody breaking the bank here. Let's let's speak very clear.
- 1:44:45Rich Hill for years was actually really interesting and fun to watch. It seems
- 1:44:48like he was just this ageless wonder that would always give you ratios. But
- 1:44:53Gie man Choy, you know, he's probably gonna be in the strong side
- 1:44:57platoon in that you know, da kind of a space um for for the
- 1:45:03Padres. It kind of got Louis Campusano getting some some of bats there right
- 1:45:08now since they kind of moved on from Nelson cruz um. And traditionally he's
- 1:45:13been a guy that can kind of crush um uh, the the righties.
- 1:45:18Um. He's been a kind of a part time rolled Pittsburgh this year,
- 1:45:20so he hasn't really got a whole lot of chance. And he you know,
- 1:45:23I think he's has if I recall, had some injury issues as well.
- 1:45:26So he's traditionally as kind of mashed at rightings um. Never been a
- 1:45:30high average guy really a you know, not a fast guy, doesn't leg
- 1:45:35things out. But if you're you know, looking for a if you have
- 1:45:39a platoon situation at first for for whatever reason, then you're looking for some
- 1:45:43power. You know, she' been CHOI actually could could bring that. I'm
- 1:45:46not saying he's an investment guy. He's probably the guy that if somebody goes
- 1:45:49down with an injury and you have to go to the waiver wire, He's
- 1:45:53not the worst choice right now. So I think he's he gets some more
- 1:45:56starts and people expect. I think that he'll hit you know, a handful
- 1:45:59of home before the season ends. Maybe he gets a hot week where he
- 1:46:02goes again, goes to cores and faces a ton of ritis. Go ahead
- 1:46:05and stream him for that week. I think that's what you're looking at,
- 1:46:09Jim and Choy. But overall, not a whole lot to write home out
- 1:46:12in this trade. Yeah, and honestly, I'm a little bit sad that
- 1:46:16he left Pittsburgh because it looked like in Pittsburgh he would have had a better
- 1:46:19role at first base there. But in San Diego, we'll see if he
- 1:46:25gets playing time over cornan Worth or kind of what happens overall. But yeah,
- 1:46:30we'll see what Ganchoi does. There were two more closiers that I wanted
- 1:46:35to go over there continue go over in this top thirteen rundown. The first
- 1:46:41one is a trade that kind of happened early on the weekend, and that
- 1:46:45was David Robertson going from the Mets to the Marlins. That's pretty set that.
- 1:46:49I don't think David roberts Certain's value is changing too much, like maybe
- 1:46:55a pick up, but he's going to be a steady closer there in Miami.
- 1:47:00Obviously, AJ Puck is done closing or Tanner Scott if you're respecting on
- 1:47:03him. So David Robertson's the end all and you all for saves right now
- 1:47:10in Miami. And then the other is when Scott Barlow was traded for or
- 1:47:15to San Diego from Kansas City, that opened up the job to Carlo Serandez,
- 1:47:21and I think most people already were specking on that. Carlo Seriez was
- 1:47:27starting to get picked up in lots of places, and honestly, he even
- 1:47:30though he's a closer, he might not be totally worth it because the Royals
- 1:47:33are really, really terrible and you might maybe only get, you know,
- 1:47:38three or four saves out of him rest a way. So he's been good
- 1:47:42ratio wise, has been striking beads out. But those are two closers that
- 1:47:45you can look at and kind of situations that are changing. Scott Barlow when
- 1:47:50he's going to San Diego. He's not even gonna sniff the closer role.
- 1:47:54So Josh Ader stuck around and Scott Barlow is going to have to hurdle three
- 1:47:59or four dudes before he even gets on the conversation again. Yeah, I
- 1:48:03think you read the guy. Of those two, the one that I want
- 1:48:06to be most interested in is definitely Carlos Hernandez. I think he has potentially
- 1:48:13the best up and coming stuff. Uh, you know, really looks to
- 1:48:17you know, be pumping it in there, you know, ninety nine hundred
- 1:48:19type of guy. Uh seems like the controls taking a step forward this season.
- 1:48:26And uh, you know, he is a little flyball prone, so
- 1:48:29I worry a little bit about that, that volatility there. But he plays
- 1:48:33for Kansas City, and there's just uh, you know, so I think
- 1:48:36he's the kind of guy that if you're looking for a few saves, you
- 1:48:39can pick him up cheap. You know, you grab him off the waiver
- 1:48:42wire, you go for it. Uh, just don't. I probably wouldn't
- 1:48:45be looking to trade to acquire him. Uh. If you're looking for saves,
- 1:48:48he's probably just gonna get a handful, you know, the rest of
- 1:48:51the season. It might be you know, back to back nights he gets
- 1:48:54saves, it might be two weeks before he gets another one, So not
- 1:48:58not the guy that you're looking for for saves. If you have to go
- 1:49:00for that, Robertson's probably the probably better pickup. Yeah, I agree,
- 1:49:04definitely, And I don't even think obviously he's not going to be available,
- 1:49:09but he's going to be on the trade market for you. And I would
- 1:49:13definitely suggest gaing David Robertson if you eat him, because he has been just
- 1:49:17a rock for like the past fifteen years. So I think he's a great
- 1:49:21reliever and closer and great place to go. But I also like, I
- 1:49:27think that opens up for next week. It should be starting to get more
- 1:49:30into fancy trade deadline prime season, and so we can maybe touch on that
- 1:49:34a little bit next week in terms of what strategies we might have there,
- 1:49:39because I know I've mentioned earlier I have one that's coming up tomorrow in one
- 1:49:43week, but I think most of them have him in mid to late August,
- 1:49:47So we can go through a few things there. If you're looking to
- 1:49:50acquire David Robertson. I know we just covered tons and tons of trades there
- 1:49:56and write in the rundown right now that like the trades that we've gone through
- 1:50:00or just it, we've only gotten to the tip of the iceberg. So
- 1:50:04I'm gonna link to Mike pittreol is great piece forimb dot com, so you
- 1:50:08can check out some of these other trades that went down. And I'm going
- 1:50:11to also link to all the trades that happened during the deadline. You can
- 1:50:14see which one's slipped through the cracks and flu underneath your radar. But true,
- 1:50:19thanks for joining me in this marathon. Thanks for getting through the trade
- 1:50:24deadline and trying to keep up with it so that we could have a good
- 1:50:29discussion here. It's been usually our longest pod. So where can people find
- 1:50:33you? And um, anything you got going on in this upcoming weekend?
- 1:50:39Yeah, thanks for sticking around and hanging with us because it was a marathon
- 1:50:44of trades. Uh, like it always can find me on can we are

- 1:51:14to that. And hey, if you're in the Chicago Land area, probably
- 1:51:16I might be hitting up the car shows up there this weekend just for fun.
- 1:51:20Maybe if I'll find a gym, we can talk about next week when
- 1:51:25I find you know, some Mike Trout king a dollar Bucks. I actually
- 1:51:30might not make the pod next week. Sorry if that happens, but um
- 1:51:32yeah, how about you any any any big plans this weekend? And where
- 1:51:35can where can folks find you in connect Yeah? I wish you lucky if
- 1:51:39you do find that Mike Trout reco card, that'd be awesome. Um,
- 1:51:43but you can find me on Twitter x in cool seven at raz Ball.
- 1:51:48I'm doing weekly waiver wires there. I'll be off this week because I'm out
- 1:51:53of town, gone to a buddy's lake house in Minnesota, getting a little
- 1:51:56reunion if my college buddies, so I am. I'm not sure if somebody's
- 1:52:00up again or if we're just kind of taking a break this week, So
- 1:52:03I'll be back next week with another episode here of Cards of Categories and background
