- 0:00Chapter 7 of Hosea. So dear God, please be with us
- 0:05as we read through these chapter or maybe chapters and give us
- 0:09wisdom, insight and have the Holy Spirit reveal things to us.
- 0:12We ask for this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:17Chapter 7. Whenever I would restore the
- 0:20fortunes of my people, whenever I would heal Israel, the sins of
- 0:24Ephraim are exposed and the crimes of Samaria revealed.
- 0:30They practice deceit, thieves break into houses, bandits rob
- 0:35in the streets. But they do not realize that I
- 0:39remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them.
- 0:43They are always before me. They delight the king with their
- 0:48wickedness, the Princess with their lies.
- 0:51They are all adulterers, burning like an oven, whose fire the
- 0:57Baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it
- 1:02rises. On the day of the festival of
- 1:05our King, the Princess become inflamed with wine and he joins
- 1:11hands with the mockers. Their hearts are like an oven.
- 1:16They approach him with intrigue. Their passion smoulders all
- 1:21night. In the morning it blazes like a
- 1:23flaming fire. All of them are hot as an oven.
- 1:28They devour their rulers. All their kings fall, and none
- 1:32of them calls on me. Ephraim mixes with the nations.
- 1:37Ephraim is a flat loaf, not turned over.
- 1:41Foreigners SAP his strength, but he does not realize it.
- 1:45His hair is sprinkled with Gray, but he does not notice.
- 1:49Israel's arrogance testifies against him.
- 1:53But despite all this, he does not return to the Lord or search
- 1:57for him. Ephraim is like a dove, easily
- 2:01deceived and senseless, now calling to Egypt, now turning to
- 2:07Assyria. When they go, I will throw my
- 2:10net over them. I will pull them down like the
- 2:12birds in the sky. When I hear them flocking
- 2:15together, I will catch them. Woe to them because they have
- 2:20strayed from me, destruction to them because they have rebelled
- 2:24against me. I long to redeem them, but they
- 2:28speak about me falsely. They do not cry out to me from
- 2:32their hearts, but wail on their beds.
- 2:35They slash themselves, appealing to their gods for grain and new
- 2:40wine, but they turn away from me.
- 2:42I trained them and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil
- 2:47against me. They do not turn to the Most
- 2:51High. They are like a faulty bow.
- 2:54Their leaders will fall by the sword because of their insolent
- 2:59words. For this, they will be ridiculed
- 3:02in the land of Egypt. So I'll just read through the
- 3:06questions and answers for this one, starting with what exactly
- 3:11did the people do to provoke God's anger?
- 3:14Israel was a society in turmoil. 6 kings had reigned in 25 years.
- 3:20The nation had been seduced by foreign religions.
- 3:25It now wallowed in widespread immorality characterized by
- 3:30deceit, violence, robbery, adultery and drunkenness.
- 3:36How were the Princess of the land like an oven?
- 3:39The Princess of the land were leaders who burned within, full
- 3:43of lust for the flesh and a lust for power.
- 3:48As the fire of an oven cannot always be seen from the outside,
- 3:53these Princess secretly burned and plotted against the king
- 3:57while entertaining him with their lies.
- 4:00They apparently hoped to organize a rebellion, kill the
- 4:04king, and assume power. What's the meaning of a flat
- 4:08loaf not turned over? Ephraim was compared to 1/2
- 4:11baked loaf which symbolized an unfinished, worthless piece of
- 4:16half done work. Yet behind the prophetic words
- 4:20was the promise that God would continue to work with Ephraim.
- 4:24He would love and form this people until they fulfilled His
- 4:29intention. What was wrong with the with
- 4:34calling other nations for help? While international treaties are
- 4:38not forbidden in the Bible, the people of Israel were never to
- 4:42depend on any source other than God for their survival and
- 4:47security. The primary reason they turned
- 4:51to Egypt and Assyria for help was because they did not want to
- 4:55turn to God in repentance. So what is the significance of
- 5:03grain and new wine? This is a powerful reference to
- 5:06the blessings of the covenant. These words are also found in
- 5:10Deuteronomy Chapter 7, verse 13 in a context demonstrating God's
- 5:15love and blessing in response to Israel's obedience.
- 5:20So love and blessing comes with obedience.
- 5:24God was the one who provided these basic necessities for
- 5:27Israel, which shows how foolish it was for Israel to turn away
- 5:31from God. It is important to note that
- 5:34Israel cried out to God for what she perceived God might provide,
- 5:39but the inclination of her heart was away from Him.
- 5:43She wanted blessings from God, but was not inclined to give God
- 5:48the honor to Him or turn in repentance.
- 5:51Right. How were the people of Israel
- 5:54like a faulty bow? God could not depend on Israel,
- 5:58just as an Archer cannot depend on a faulty bow.
- 6:04A bow that is warped, are strung incorrectly, will cause the
- 6:08arrow to miss its target just as Israel had missed the mark.
- 6:14And that's the end of Chapter 7. What I noticed it in this was
- 6:20that these evil doers would approach a man with intrigue and
- 6:26we know like the Lawless 1 uses intrigue and it's just that's
- 6:32something evil kind of something seducing.
- 6:35The way the Bible described it, the study Bible commented on
- 6:39this and then it said none of their kings call on me.
- 6:42So God just wants to be called on.
- 6:43He wants to be a resource and then it just says, you know, he
- 6:50does not return to the Lord or search for him.
- 6:52That's what God wants. I long to redeem them, but they
- 6:55speak about me falsely. They do not cry out to me from
- 6:58their hearts, but they wail on their beds.
- 7:01They cry on their beds, but they're not calling on God.
- 7:03And those are the, the main things that I took away from
- 7:06that chapter. Now we'll go into chapter 8.
- 7:09Put the trumpet to your lips. An eagle is over the House of
- 7:13the Lord because the people have broken my covenant and rebelled
- 7:18against my law. So this thing about an eagle.
- 7:24Eagles were described as unclean.
- 7:26However, they are referenced as one of the creatures in the
- 7:30heavenly realms with God in Revelation and if you just
- 7:35search Eagle on Digital Bible you can see all the references
- 7:41and it typically is not something good.
- 7:44So God can use an evil entity to rule over his chosen people like
- 7:52here, so that his will be done or that its people get turned
- 7:59over to the desires of their heart.
- 8:02And that's what it says here like an eagle.
- 8:05So an eagle is is not something good.
- 8:09It's an eagle is over the House of the Lord because the people
- 8:13have broken my covenant. So the people did something
- 8:16wrong. So God puts an eagle, which was
- 8:19an unclean bird, over them. Israel cries out to me, Our God,
- 8:25we acknowledge you. But Israel has rejected what is
- 8:28good. An enemy will pursue them.
- 8:32They set up kings without my consent.
- 8:35They chose Princess without my approval.
- 8:38So I was thinking back on the separation after Solomon's
- 8:43passing. There were two different there
- 8:47was the northern tribe and the southern tribe.
- 8:50Now the southern tribe got anointed or appointed the
- 8:53leader, but in the northern tribe they did it for
- 8:56themselves. And then they set up a separate
- 8:58place, I guess it was in Bethel. And also Samaria was their
- 9:03capital, the northern portion of with the 10 tribes.
- 9:07And so they had their own place of worship, whereas everybody
- 9:11was supposed to be in Jerusalem worshiping, but that didn't
- 9:15happen. So they set up their own king.
- 9:18And that's what God's pointing out.
- 9:20It's not my, it wasn't my approval.
- 9:22This is what you did, but it wasn't my approval.
- 9:26And I think we can all learn from that.
- 9:29We can pursue things that we want to do.
- 9:32But do we ask God, is this something that you would approve
- 9:37of? And I think that's something
- 9:40that all of us can learn from, is that when we, especially when
- 9:42we have bigger decisions that we really trust in God with that
- 9:48answer to that decision that we're going to make and go to
- 9:50him first before we make a decision so we don't get
- 9:54ourselves into trouble with their silver and gold.
- 9:59They make idols for themselves to their own destruction.
- 10:04Samaria, throw out your calf idol.
- 10:07My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable
- 10:12of purity? They are.
- 10:16They are from Israel. This calf, a metal worker has
- 10:20made it. It is not God.
- 10:22It will be broken into pieces. That calf of Samaria.
- 10:27They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind, the stock.
- 10:31So you know, like they're, they're throwing out the the
- 10:34wind, but they're going to be reaping A whirlwind like a
- 10:38tornado, a destruction. The stock has no head.
- 10:43It will produce no flour. It's almost like having no
- 10:46fruit, like there's nothing good that comes from it.
- 10:48It's growing, but it's not producing anything.
- 10:51Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up.
- 10:54So they don't get to keep anything that they've grown.
- 10:57Somebody else is going to take it.
- 10:59Israel has swallowed up. Now she is among the nations
- 11:02like something no one wants, for they have gone up to Assyria
- 11:07like a wild donkey wandering alone.
- 11:10Ephraim has sold herself to lovers.
- 11:13Although they have sold themselves among the nations.
- 11:16I will now gather them together. They will begin to waste away
- 11:21under the oppression of the mighty king.
- 11:25Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have
- 11:29become altars for sinning. I wrote for them the many things
- 11:35of My law, but they regarded them as something foreign.
- 11:41Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat
- 11:45the meat, the Lord is not pleased with them.
- 11:48Now He will remember their wickedness and punish their
- 11:52sins. They will return to Egypt.
- 11:55Israel has forgotten their Maker and built palaces.
- 12:00Judah has fortified many towns, but I will send fire on their
- 12:04cities that will consume their fortresses.
- 12:07So I'll read the questions and answers for chapter 8.
- 12:12What does an eagle over the house signify?
- 12:15This is a picture of a vulture circling over a dying animal or
- 12:19a corpse. The image signifies God's coming
- 12:23judgement. Assyria would invade and destroy
- 12:26Israel, the House of the Lord. How were the people supposed to
- 12:30choose their leaders? They were supposed to choose
- 12:33their leaders who would obey the law, destroy idols, care for the
- 12:39poor, provide justice, and seek God.
- 12:42As it was, violent coups and assassinations often deposed the
- 12:47kings. Power hungry men and their
- 12:50cohorts competed for the throne. Conditions worsened because
- 12:55those who ruled by the sword became more paranoid of others
- 12:59with power and less sensitive to issues that got that concerned
- 13:04God. What does it mean to sow the
- 13:08wind and reap the whirlwind? This image portrays the sad fate
- 13:13of Israel in its apostasy, idolatry, and infidelity.
- 13:18Rather than sowing productive seed, Israel sowed the wind,
- 13:23that is mere air or nothing. The tragic, tragic harvest of
- 13:29such sowing would be a devastating storm of judgment
- 13:33against the nation's sin. How did Israel's sin make her
- 13:38worthless among the nations? In lusting after false gods,
- 13:43Israel proved to be no different than the Pagan nations.
- 13:47By forsaking her calling as God's chosen light to the other
- 13:52nations, Israel became merely another nation without
- 13:56direction, identity, or mission. She lost her witness to others
- 14:01and exchanged her high vocation for worthless gratification.
- 14:07How had the Israelites altars become altars for sinning?
- 14:11First, the phrase many altars exposes the Israelites
- 14:14reluctance to worship at the one altar God had ordained for
- 14:18worship. When the northern Kingdom ceded
- 14:22from the southern Kingdom, Jeroboam the first established
- 14:25worship centres in the north so that his people would not have
- 14:29to return to the southern Kingdom to worship at the
- 14:31central sanctuary. Second, the phrase they eat the
- 14:35meat highlights Israel's failure to obey God's instructions
- 14:40regarding sacrifice. The people were allowed to eat
- 14:43only certain portions of the sacrificial animals, but
- 14:47apparently they were also consuming the portions that
- 14:50belonged to the Lord. How would Israel return to
- 14:54Egypt? This is a figure of speech
- 14:56signifying that because of her sin, Israel would revert to her
- 15:00condition prior to the Exodus. Oppressed and enslaved.
- 15:05How and when did God send fire on their cities?
- 15:09Shalmanasar, king of Assyria, invaded and conquered Israel in
- 15:14722 BC after laying siege for three years to the capital city
- 15:19of Samaria. This reference to fire was
- 15:22fulfilled in two ways. Number one, literally because
- 15:26much of the city was burned when conquered by the Assyrians, and
- 15:30two, figuratively because the invasion consumed the nation
- 15:34politically and geographically just as fire.
- 15:38Fire consumes fuel. So let's see where we are now.
- 15:45I was going to go to OK, we can still continue.
- 15:47Chapter 9 punishment for Israel. Do not rejoice, Israel.
- 15:52Do not be jubilant like the other nations, for you have been
- 15:56unfaithful to your God. You love the wages of a
- 15:59prostitute at every threshing floor.
- 16:01Threshing floors and wine presses will not feed the
- 16:05people. The new wine will fail them.
- 16:08They will not remain in the Lord's land.
- 16:12Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.
- 16:18They will not pour out wine offerings to the Lord, nor will
- 16:22their sacrifices please Him. Such sacrifices will be to them
- 16:27like the bread of the mourners. All who eat them will be
- 16:31unclean. This food will be for
- 16:34themselves. It will not come into the temple
- 16:37of the Lord. What will you do on the day of
- 16:40your appointed festivals, on the feast days of the Lord?
- 16:44Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather
- 16:47them and Memphis will bury them. Their treasures of silver will
- 16:52be taken over by Breers, and thorns will overrun their tents.
- 16:57The days of punishment are coming.
- 17:00The days of reckoning are at hand.
- 17:02Let Israel know this, because your sins are so many and your
- 17:07hostility so great. The prophet is considered a
- 17:11fool, the inspired person a maniac.
- 17:15I'm going to read about that right now.
- 17:16Why did they think the prophet was a fool or a maniac?
- 17:19First, Hosea was considered a fool because of his faithful
- 17:24allegiance to his adulterous wife. 2nd, Hosea was thought to
- 17:29be strange because he persisted in the hard line pronouncements
- 17:33about God's coming judgement. The uncompromising message of
- 17:37the prophets coupled with their unconventional ways and
- 17:41antisocial behavior often caused them to be labeled as crazy myth
- 17:47misfits. Going back to Scripture, the
- 17:51prophet along with God is the watchman over Ephraim.
- 17:56So notice there that the prophet, the one who's getting
- 17:59these words from God, is a watchman over Ephraim.
- 18:02Like he's trying to turn them back to God.
- 18:05He's trying to help them to open their eyes so that they can see
- 18:08that they need to turn to God. I think this could also apply to
- 18:12us today, the need to turn to God culturally, like as a, you
- 18:17know, general statement. So yet, OK, so the prophet along
- 18:23with my God is the watchman over Ephraim, yet snares await him on
- 18:28all his paths and hostility in the House of his God.
- 18:32They have sunk deep into corruption as in the days of
- 18:36Gibeah. So I had to look that up.
- 18:38So Gibeah was within the tribe of Benjamin and the thing that
- 18:42happened in Gibeah when they went into corruption was they
- 18:47the people of that town kind of like Sodom and Gomorrah raped a
- 18:52Levite concubine and and this this place also became the
- 18:56capital during Saul's time. So there are a couple different
- 19:00things that were corrupted about Gibeah.
- 19:05So God will punish their wickedness and punish them for
- 19:08their sins. When I found Israel, it was like
- 19:11finding grapes in the desert. When I saw your ancestors, it
- 19:16was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree.
- 19:19But when they came to Bale, Bale pure, they consecrated
- 19:23themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing
- 19:29they loved. So idolatry started.
- 19:33They started worshipping another God.
- 19:36Ephraim's glory will fly away like a bird.
- 19:40No birth, no pregnancy, no conception.
- 19:44Even if they rear children, I will bereave them of everyone.
- 19:48Woe to them when I turn away from them.
- 19:52I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place.
- 19:58But Ephraim will bring out their children to the Slayer.
- 20:02Give them Lord, what will you give them?
- 20:05Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that are dry.
- 20:11Because of their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there.
- 20:15Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house.
- 20:20I will no longer love them. All their leaders are
- 20:23rebellious. Ephraim is blighted.
- 20:26Their root is withered. They yield no fruit.
- 20:31Even if they bear children, I will slay their cherished
- 20:34offspring. My God will reject them because
- 20:39they have not obeyed him. They will be Wanderers among the
- 20:43nations. So here, you know, we can see
- 20:47that obedience to God is important in the New Testament.
- 20:50It tells us that obedience shows God that we love him.
- 20:54Like Jesus said, if you love me, you will obey my commands.
- 20:58So obedience isn't a way to to get into God's Kingdom.
- 21:04There's a different way for that.
- 21:05But obedience shows are we is our heart really turned to God?
- 21:11So ultimately God wants obedience out of us.
- 21:14We can't ignore obedience. I do hear a lot of churches like
- 21:19minimizing obedience because they start calling it like
- 21:22legalism, but that is so far from the truth.
- 21:26When people get comfort from not being obedient and say, oh,
- 21:31we're saved by grace, they're missing the point here because
- 21:35Jesus's death on the cross was not so that we could keep on
- 21:40sinning. Paul says that too.
- 21:42So even Paul, who talks a lot about grace, says that it's not
- 21:47that we can keep on sinning. It's there for the slight
- 21:51imperfections that happen occasionally when somebody falls
- 21:56but then realizes that they made a mistake because we will make
- 22:00mistakes and repents of it changes so that you don't do it
- 22:05again. It's not there's a difference
- 22:07between forgiveness and atonement, and forgiveness is
- 22:18actually I probably should like look that up and actually read
- 22:23it because my definition will probably not be as to someone
- 22:28else's Difference between forgiveness and atonement.
- 22:44OK, Atonement and forgiveness are related concepts but have
- 22:49distinct meanings. Atonement typically refers to
- 22:53making amends for wrongdoing, while forgiveness is the act of
- 22:58pardoning someone for a transgression.
- 23:02Atonement often involves actions to repair the harm caused, while
- 23:08forgiveness focuses on releasing resentment and extending mercy.
- 23:15So there is a difference. And so if people think that they
- 23:19can just keep asking for forgiveness.
- 23:25We we can keep asking for forgiveness, but the the part
- 23:30about unrepentant sinning, that part will come into judgment and
- 23:36that part is not acceptable by God.
- 23:39Unrepentant sinning, there's a lot of consequences of that.
- 23:46Whether we forfeit the Kingdom, that's going to be God's
- 23:49ultimate decision. But the Bible doesn't indicate
- 23:55very favorably with someone who has done that because ultimately
- 24:00it's our free will that puts us in God's Kingdom or not in God's
- 24:06Kingdom. We make a choice.
- 24:08Either we accept what Jesus did on the cross and we have a
- 24:13relationship with God. We become a new creation because
- 24:17Jesus said he didn't say I'm going to die on the cross and
- 24:21that's the only thing that will ever have to happen for you.
- 24:25He did say I am the way, the truth and life and no one comes
- 24:27to the Father through me. But he also said that no one can
- 24:32enter the Kingdom of God without being born again.
- 24:36Born of the Spirit and born of the born of the water and born
- 24:43of the Spirit. So born of the water.
- 24:47It could mean two different things.
- 24:48It could mean an A human earthly birth because there's water at
- 24:51birth. And it may also mean the baptism
- 24:57of repentance like what John gave people where he baptized
- 25:01people. That was a baptism of
- 25:03repentance. That's turning away from sin.
- 25:06And then Jesus talks about being born of the Spirit, that's
- 25:11receiving the Holy Spirit. After we've repented, that's
- 25:16when we can receive the Holy Spirit.
- 25:18And he said no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless you've
- 25:23been born again of the Spirit. So we need the Holy Spirit to
- 25:27enter the Kingdom of God and we can't get the Holy Spirit if we
- 25:31are unrepentant. So there is a that's why it
- 25:37probably makes sense that there's so many different
- 25:40religions out there that have disagreements on salvation.
- 25:45And both of them, you know, different views are partially
- 25:50right. But you need to put it all
- 25:51together so that we understand that we we cannot do it on our
- 25:58own. We can't just be a good person
- 26:00and get to heaven. That's not possible through the
- 26:02Bible because it says we are all sinners.
- 26:05We are incapable. The only way that we start to
- 26:08battle against or get rid of sin in our life is by the power of
- 26:14God through the Holy Spirit. And that's what the Bible tells
- 26:19us. So if we deny it, and again it
- 26:22says like there is nothing, you know, the one sin that can't be
- 26:25forgiven is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
- 26:28That's probably denying the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 26:31If you're going to deny the Holy Spirit, you can't get into God's
- 26:34Kingdom. So that's like an unreal, that's
- 26:37one sin that you cannot be forgiven of.
- 26:41You can't deny the Holy Spirit of God.
- 26:44Just like Jesus said, we need the Holy Spirit.
- 26:47So anyway, I think that will wrap up this chapter and I think
- 26:54we will pick up next time with chapter 10.
