- 0:00Speaker 1: All of our practices this week goes so yeah, I mean,
- 0:04Speaker 1: I think that the excitement of football is back, right,
- 0:06Speaker 1: I mean, everything that you love about August is here,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and our guys are doing a really good job of
- 0:11Speaker 1: trying to get acclimated to the heat. Had a really
- 0:14Speaker 1: good weather week. From that standpoint of things to kind
- 0:16Speaker 1: of think, get us prepared for really good days in
- 0:19Speaker 1: a row here and gonna catch our breath tomorrow and
- 0:22Speaker 1: plan out what next week should really look like. So,
- 0:24Speaker 1: you know, caustiously optimistic of how things have been going.
- 0:28Speaker 1: You know a lot of position battles, a lot of competition,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and you know it still the learning phase of what
- 0:32Speaker 1: preseason campus. So you know, some guys have shine, some
- 0:36Speaker 1: other guys have not, and those those scenarios will probably
- 0:39Speaker 1: flip this week in practice, see some all the decisions
- 0:42Speaker 1: that you have to wait for us approach. Where does
- 0:44Speaker 1: it rank that spect death learned?
- 0:46Speaker 2: You have to tell in this case of the two other.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Guys who you're not going to be deploying the spats
- 0:51Speaker 1: people like historic hops up? Is that?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 0:54Speaker 1: I mean, I mean part of the job, right. I mean,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but and these guys understand right this is they play
- 1:01Speaker 1: the most scrutinized position in sport. They picked this. I
- 1:03Speaker 1: didn't pick this for them. This is what they wanted.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And you know, we want to sit in that chair,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and you want to lead another group of young men, like,
- 1:11Speaker 1: there's a lot of responsibility that comes with that. It's
- 1:12Speaker 1: more than just throwing the football in shorts. So it's
- 1:15Speaker 1: next ends the process and they'll play itself out the
- 1:17Speaker 1: way it's supposed to get off to a good start.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You like what you've seen in the group so far.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, like I said, I mean, I'm caustiously optimistic.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I mean I'm not dumb enough or notive enough to
- 1:28Speaker 1: think that we are anywhere near a finished product. We
- 1:30Speaker 1: have a long way to go in a lot of ways.
- 1:33Speaker 1: The acclamation part of practice and getting guys we don't
- 1:36Speaker 1: even have pats on yet, right, so you get shoulder
- 1:39Speaker 1: pads and helmets. We'll start to ease into that. And
- 1:41Speaker 1: you know, once once our team starts to figure out,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you know, the key thing is hopefully you get your
- 1:46Speaker 1: football team to understand why you're doing things right. You know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: spring practice is what we're doing and how we're doing it,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and hopefully and get your team to why we're doing
- 1:55Speaker 1: it and right and that continue to improve that football IQ.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So this is a final phase, I said, is an
- 2:00Speaker 1: extensive process to get the game.
- 2:02Speaker 3: One is how do you accelerate team bonding with so
- 2:04Speaker 3: many new faces guys miss some.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Sort of fishing, some bowling, some paintball that approaches that.
- 2:09Speaker 1: What are some of the things you like to kind
- 2:10Speaker 1: of get the guys that got closer togain? All of
- 2:13Speaker 1: that stuff is great, right, I mean you can do
- 2:16Speaker 1: all the exterior things that you want to do. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: if guys won't come into the facility and have lunch
- 2:20Speaker 1: with one another and won't sit over a meal or
- 2:22Speaker 1: have real authentic conversations in the locker room or the
- 2:24Speaker 1: weight room, you don't have any chance. So I'll give
- 2:27Speaker 1: our guys a lot of credit. I think this is
- 2:29Speaker 1: a connected football team. You know, so many new faces
- 2:32Speaker 1: to coming together in January. I mean everything's new, right,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I mean the practice fields are new, the buildings, a
- 2:39Speaker 1: lot of things changing in the building, right. I mean
- 2:40Speaker 1: there's a lot of new faces. There's new staff members,
- 2:42Speaker 1: there's new recruiting department, new operations. So there's a lot
- 2:45Speaker 1: of moving parts and a lot of new things for
- 2:46Speaker 1: these guys and then for them just to say, hey, look,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna put my energy in the right place each
- 2:51Speaker 1: and every day and understand the importance of team. It's
- 2:54Speaker 1: a testament to them and it's a hats off to
- 2:55Speaker 1: them for really believing in that, because in football it's
- 3:00Speaker 1: going to get really hard and we've got to continue
- 3:01Speaker 1: to understand that adversity's a catalyst for growth with it. It
- 3:04Speaker 1: is not an indictment who you are, and it's not
- 3:06Speaker 1: does not attack your character when it puts you in
- 3:08Speaker 1: a tough situation. So you can't always pull yourself through that.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Your teammates got to help you do that. And if
- 3:14Speaker 1: there's not real relationships and there's not those deep personal connections,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I don't I don't think that effect comes to.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Like Hala mentioned that Jake's really been slinging it and
- 3:22Speaker 2: when we ask Jake what his strength is, he talked
- 3:23Speaker 2: about his mind. How do you see impair the physical
- 3:26Speaker 2: with the mental side of the game.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think all three guys have done
- 3:30Speaker 1: a really good job, you know, understanding what we're trying
- 3:33Speaker 1: to teach in the meeting room and how we're trying
- 3:34Speaker 1: to apply that to the practice field. So you know,
- 3:37Speaker 1: each guys had some really high moments, some other guys,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, some guys really all three guys, I've had
- 3:42Speaker 1: some low moments too, right, So a long way from
- 3:45Speaker 1: home on any of those guys and where this thing
- 3:47Speaker 1: ends up and where it goes, but encouraged by all
- 3:50Speaker 1: three of them and how they've been able to apply
- 3:52Speaker 1: the meeting room to the field.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You talk about having a ramp up the competitive level
- 3:56Speaker 2: from the spring to the summer to now, how do
- 3:58Speaker 2: you challenge your team?
- 3:59Speaker 1: What is it?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Je and Candle training camp look like a really challenge?
- 4:02Speaker 1: You got to play real football, you know, I mean
- 4:04Speaker 1: all of this stuff in the summer and shorts and
- 4:06Speaker 1: you know these practices and the underwear Olympics out here
- 4:09Speaker 1: that we got going on. You're not allowed to touch anybody,
- 4:11Speaker 1: to hit anybody like that's going to come to a
- 4:13Speaker 1: hall here soon and it's going to be fourth and
- 4:16Speaker 1: one sometimes. So we got to we've got to really
- 4:19Speaker 1: understand the physicality and what the intention of detail and
- 4:21Speaker 1: what that looks like of what a competitive you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: twelve plus game season is going to look like. Right,
- 4:27Speaker 1: so you know, we got to do it. Now. We
- 4:29Speaker 1: can't wait and you know, until the game till game
- 4:31Speaker 1: day shows up. So you know, I think, just how
- 4:34Speaker 1: can we continue to challenge our guys from a physical standpoint?
- 4:37Speaker 1: How can we tax them from a mental standpoint? But
- 4:39Speaker 1: yet you know, still keep that confidence going and what
- 4:42Speaker 1: we've been able to develop in the summer, it's been
- 4:44Speaker 1: the most optimistic point of the first week here so far. Yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I think that, you know, I don't know if I
- 4:54Speaker 1: point to one thing. I think it's just good to
- 4:56Speaker 1: be back in the building around the guys and being
- 4:58Speaker 1: able to play football and practice football and and being
- 5:00Speaker 1: able to limit outside distractions and really let these guys
- 5:03Speaker 1: get down to doing what they love to do. And
- 5:05Speaker 1: you know, watching young people improve is is what I
- 5:09Speaker 1: enjoy about the sport, and watching a team come together
- 5:12Speaker 1: is ultimately you know, I think, why he get into
- 5:15Speaker 1: coaching some of the new cases in the second area.
- 5:18Speaker 1: What have you like in your defensive back so far?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:21Speaker 1: You know, again, if you hope that when you get
- 5:24Speaker 1: the game day you don't see people running free in
- 5:26Speaker 1: the secondary, because that means there's lack of communication. So
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, you every player can be better if the
- 5:32Speaker 1: other guy helps you, right, if you know where your
- 5:34Speaker 1: help is on defense. You know, you're a solid communicator
- 5:36Speaker 1: and you understand.
- 5:37Speaker 3: You know, like I told you before, like what am
- 5:40Speaker 3: I doing, how am I going to do it, and
- 5:42Speaker 3: ultimately why we're doing it. I think that you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: we'll we'll have some guys that can cover and stick
- 5:48Speaker 3: to receivers, and we want to play aggressive defense, and
- 5:50Speaker 3: we better have guys that can cover.
- 5:51Speaker 1: If we're gonna play that way. Next is an opportunity
- 5:54Speaker 1: for fans to see the team, you know, get hope
- 5:57Speaker 1: with practice? What are you hoping to showcase what you
- 5:59Speaker 1: want fans take away from next act? I just want
- 6:02Speaker 1: the excitement of football and at our stadium, right and
- 6:05Speaker 1: I want I want people to come there and I
- 6:07Speaker 1: want them to, you know, leave with opinions of who
- 6:11Speaker 1: we are, what we are, good, bad, ugly. I don't
- 6:13Speaker 1: really care. I want them to be fans. I want
- 6:14Speaker 1: to allow them the opportunity to do that, right, and
- 6:16Speaker 1: I want them to see this team. I want them
- 6:18Speaker 1: to be connected to this team. So you know, we
- 6:19Speaker 1: had seven home games this year, right, Like, we need
- 6:21Speaker 1: that stadium full, we need it packed, We need that
- 6:24Speaker 1: to be a real home field advantage. I'm sure practice
- 6:27Speaker 1: will go really good in some way. I'm sure I'll
- 6:29Speaker 1: be really upset about a lot of things in practice,
- 6:31Speaker 1: just part of it. It'll be you know, that's part
- 6:33Speaker 1: of preseason camp. So I don't want them to have
- 6:35Speaker 1: a taste of what we are really start to get
- 6:37Speaker 1: to know our team a little bit, you know, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: have a few weeks where we kicked the ball off
- 6:41Speaker 1: to you know, have a beer with their friends and
- 6:43Speaker 1: talk about how good or bad or ugly we're gonna
- 6:45Speaker 1: be working with coach Mantle at first camp together. Has
- 6:49Speaker 1: that gone? What are your taking aways on defensive? Yeah?
- 6:51Speaker 1: But I think he's a very intelligent guy, right, and
- 6:54Speaker 1: he's a very tough guy. Played the foot plate, played
- 6:57Speaker 1: football for a long time, played at the highest level,
- 7:00Speaker 1: understands that the key principles of defense and what that's
- 7:03Speaker 1: going to be. And the longer we're together and the
- 7:06Speaker 1: longer that he's with our guys, the more that's going
- 7:08Speaker 1: to shape itself and turn itself into what we want
- 7:10Speaker 1: it to look like. So very please, so far, Okay,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you know, let's see the strength.
- 7:17Speaker 3: In your mind and the quarto back throm.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And what's kind of the connective personality and some words ss.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Well, I think that there's a great competitive spirit, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: I think there's that's contagious. When that room has that,
- 7:29Speaker 1: that's contagious to the rest of the team. And I
- 7:32Speaker 1: think that, you know, natural leadership qualities emerge, and you know,
- 7:37Speaker 1: we have to say, like, look, like the opposite of
- 7:40Speaker 1: the leader is not a follower, So I'm not asking
- 7:42Speaker 1: anybody to follow anybody. The opposite of the leader is
- 7:44Speaker 1: a pessimist, right, So when it doesn't go my way,
- 7:46Speaker 1: like can I can I pick my chin up? And
- 7:49Speaker 1: can I get back to the line of scrimmage and
- 7:50Speaker 1: play the next play? So we continue to put those
- 7:53Speaker 1: guys in those situations, and then if they thrive in
- 7:55Speaker 1: those situations, some of those natural leadership qualities start to show,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and that's where the belief the team comes. I mean,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I said this a couple of weeks ago, like, I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: not picking who the quarterback is. That'll play itself out
- 8:04Speaker 1: by their play on the field, right, and you'll see
- 8:07Speaker 1: who moves the team and who moves the team well
- 8:09Speaker 1: and how the guy's rallying around that particular person, whoever
- 8:11Speaker 1: that may be. So yeah, I'm not you guys are way,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you guys are excited to know who the quarterback is
- 8:17Speaker 1: and you're way worried about it than what I am.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Right now speaking it strength Brat. I mean we saw
- 8:23Speaker 2: him kind of bouncing around here at you're stretching with
- 8:25Speaker 2: the guys. What was it about you that attracted you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you to Brad? And then what does he bring to
- 8:31Speaker 2: your guys?
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't. I think that's the most important hire
- 8:34Speaker 1: you have. You know, he's done an amazing job since
- 8:37Speaker 1: day one. I mean he's been trained, you know, by
- 8:40Speaker 1: the best. And I say that like, I just think
- 8:42Speaker 1: this is his first job and he hasn't been ultra
- 8:44Speaker 1: successful in himself. But when you you work for Mickey Muradi,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you work for Ben Herbert, you understand, you know what
- 8:50Speaker 1: it looks like and how it should go. And then
- 8:52Speaker 1: every like everybody, when you're a young coach, you're riching
- 8:54Speaker 1: for your own opportunity to run your own program and
- 8:56Speaker 1: do it the way you want to do it right.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And he's done as good a job as anybody. Before
- 9:00Speaker 1: we got to Toledo, there wasn't a guy drafted out
- 9:02Speaker 1: of that place in ten years. And you know, we
- 9:04Speaker 1: got thirteen guys picked and that's not I'm not lifting them.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I'm not in there working out with them. So you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: a lot of that, you know, has to a lot
- 9:12Speaker 1: of that credit goes to him and his staff, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 1: And I think the great support that we have here
- 9:16Speaker 1: and some of the resources that we're gonna you know
- 9:18Speaker 1: that we put into that part of the program, and
- 9:20Speaker 1: we'll continue to put into that part of the program.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I think it's only up from here. You're at me
- 9:24Speaker 1: stretching those he put me through some of this that's
- 9:26Speaker 1: called a workout for me, And that's the extent of it.
- 9:29Speaker 1: How long have you worked together. He's been with me
- 9:32Speaker 1: ever since since it was my first hire, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: when I got the job in Toledo. So you know,
- 9:36Speaker 1: he was insistent at Arkansas back in fifteen. We went
- 9:39Speaker 1: down and played Arkansas and you know, and actually knocked
- 9:42Speaker 1: them off when they were in the top twenty five.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And that was a good, physical, tough, big football team.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And you know, you could see he was on an
- 9:49Speaker 1: SEC team look like back then, right, big, fast and physical.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So you want to try to recreate those qualities in
- 9:55Speaker 1: your own program. And you want a guy that really
- 9:57Speaker 1: understands how you see things, and I think when that lines,
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know, everything else falls into place. Yeah, something else,
- 10:05Speaker 1: all right, guys appreciate it. Thank you, Jason,
