- 0:07Speaker 1: Boo Light Cap Podcast special guests in here, Ho Vane,
- 0:10Speaker 1: what's up? My brother? Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, man, thank
- 0:13Speaker 1: you for having me. Man. It's good to see you. Man,
- 0:16Speaker 1: see you. Good to see you keep doing your thing.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Like White met you, you was here, then you went
- 0:21Speaker 1: to another place. Everywhere you go, you win. That's bouncing around.
- 0:24Speaker 1: All you do is win. Yes, for sure, bouncing around,
- 0:27Speaker 1: But you're not bouncing down. I've been. I've been in
- 0:29Speaker 1: La now since shit twenty seventeen, early twenty seventeen. You're
- 0:32Speaker 1: bouncing around and not bouncing down. Not bouncing down is
- 0:36Speaker 1: what is important, my friend, very and uh, same with you.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I feel like you keep leveling up, leveling up, leveling up.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I tried to man, God is good. Man. You know
- 0:45Speaker 1: it's crazy because I feel like, you know when you're
- 0:47Speaker 1: good people and you have good relationships, like no matter
- 0:49Speaker 1: what transpires, like you're always gonna end up on top.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I feel like if you work hard, you're a good person,
- 0:55Speaker 1: keep your face clean, you believe in God, anything. God. Yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it's crazy to because you did even do you remember
- 1:02Speaker 1: when you were starting to interview artists, didn't you do
- 1:04Speaker 1: a ric Ross interview? I did a ric Rolse interview
- 1:06Speaker 1: that went crazy, went TMZ everywhere. Then I want to
- 1:09Speaker 1: get back to that. I'm gonna say you like like
- 1:11Speaker 1: on your back. I did a couple, I did five,
- 1:13Speaker 1: I did Charlemagne, I did Lenny As, I did Ross,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I did g Z and I did Wex, who was
- 1:20Speaker 1: the head of the addas at the time. For people
- 1:23Speaker 1: who don't know who you are, kind of give us
- 1:25Speaker 1: a breakdown. Who is Hovane? What do you do? I'm
- 1:27Speaker 1: a talent manager and I'm a music executive. I'm a
- 1:31Speaker 1: doc connector as much as you are a connector. Yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 1: Like a lot of times, like I have a relationships
- 1:36Speaker 1: that I have respectable relationships with people. Somebody might call
- 1:38Speaker 1: me like, hey you know this person, Well, hey do
- 1:40Speaker 1: you know somebody at Nike? Could you put me together?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Or do you know this person? Do you know somebody
- 1:44Speaker 1: in Mercedes? And I just facilitated and I just put
- 1:47Speaker 1: put the two parties together. What is some of your
- 1:51Speaker 1: talent roster that you work with on a regular basis.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Obviously you work with Cinematic and Johnny Shipe. Cinematic Johnny Shapes,
- 1:57Speaker 1: that's the home, you know. I'm the president of Cinematic
- 1:59Speaker 1: Man Company. We have Paris Bryant, who's in the house
- 2:03Speaker 1: right now. We have uh well, I have Styles P.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I have Lloyd Banks, Spinning Bands, Ship, KB, Mike, a
- 2:15Speaker 1: bunch of artists like hell local Ship. We was managing
- 2:21Speaker 1: Tea paying for a little while Joey Badass was with
- 2:25Speaker 1: us for a minute. I had wal A for a
- 2:28Speaker 1: second bust. The ROMs just get to a point where
- 2:31Speaker 1: you can be managing too many artists at once. No,
- 2:35Speaker 1: because it's the team, you know what I'm saying. It's
- 2:37Speaker 1: not like it's not like you're the soul. Yeah, it's
- 2:39Speaker 1: not like I'm the soul, you know what I'm saying.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So like, if I delegate properly, I have somebody that's
- 2:44Speaker 1: going to be in place with them, and all I
- 2:45Speaker 1: gotta do is make the call or whatever. You know
- 2:47Speaker 1: what I'm saying. It's never I don't think it's too many,
- 2:49Speaker 1: too many people, because I feel like sometimes you'll see
- 2:52Speaker 1: like somebody like they have like six artists a manager.
- 2:55Speaker 1: They're like, but they were like handling a lot of
- 2:57Speaker 1: it on their own. Yeah, that's that's almost impossible. It's
- 2:59Speaker 1: not enough time to day if you want to give
- 3:01Speaker 1: people the proper, proper attention they deserve. You got to
- 3:04Speaker 1: have a team. So I'm lucky and blessed that I
- 3:07Speaker 1: have a team of great people that work with me
- 3:08Speaker 1: one hundred percent. Man, how did you initially kind of
- 3:13Speaker 1: get your foot into the music game, like takes to
- 3:15Speaker 1: the beginning of your career. Ship At the beginning, I
- 3:18Speaker 1: just have one artist, like you know, it was my homeboy.
- 3:20Speaker 1: He was rapping, and it kind of like the situation
- 3:24Speaker 1: called for a manager, and it was just like, all right, cool,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you're the manager. So from now that was like the
- 3:29Speaker 1: origin of you just getting involved in the industry. Period
- 3:32Speaker 1: start we started BSB, Yeah, we started in music shit together.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I feel like managing artists is like kind of like
- 3:38Speaker 1: a blanket statement a lot of people make in terms
- 3:41Speaker 1: of like yeah, I managed an artist, or I do
- 3:42Speaker 1: A and R shit or okay, give me kind of
- 3:44Speaker 1: like if you're an artist manager, what are your tasks? Like?
- 3:48Speaker 1: What is like define that for me? You have to
- 3:51Speaker 1: you have to enhance the situation whatever they have going on.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Like so a lot of times people come up to
- 3:55Speaker 1: you and be like, hey, I need management. I'm like,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you don't really have anything too many yet you know
- 4:00Speaker 1: what I'm saying, there's no demand, there's no deals to make,
- 4:02Speaker 1: there's no interest, there's no revenue that need to be
- 4:06Speaker 1: brought in, So you don't need a manager, And I'd
- 4:08Speaker 1: probably assess their situation and tell them what they do need.
- 4:12Speaker 1: What I'm saying, a lot of people don't need management
- 4:13Speaker 1: to get to a point where it's something to manage.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So essentially, you're just putting gasoline on whatever fires already. Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and you're using your leverage and your relationships to ticket
- 4:27Speaker 1: to another level. Like if you come to me and
- 4:28Speaker 1: you're seven, my job is to make you a tend
- 4:31Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, maximize and build your talents
- 4:34Speaker 1: and give you my tutelage and show you the way
- 4:37Speaker 1: to be the best artist you could possibly be. A
- 4:40Speaker 1: manager is like a bridge to your to the other
- 4:43Speaker 1: side of your potential, you know what I'm saying. So
- 4:45Speaker 1: you might be making one hundred thousand a year a month,
- 4:49Speaker 1: let me show you and do these things so we
- 4:51Speaker 1: could maximize that, and now we're making five hundred thousand
- 4:54Speaker 1: a month. You know what I'm saying. Give you a
- 4:56Speaker 1: bunch of strategies and a bunch of disciplinary tools. To
- 5:00Speaker 1: get to where you need to go. But at the
- 5:02Speaker 1: end of the day, it's the artists and the talent
- 5:04Speaker 1: that is the driving the ship. You know what I'm saying.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm just kind of like Siri's gotcha, got you? Is it?
- 5:11Speaker 1: You know what? It's crazy too because dealing with artists,
- 5:13Speaker 1: it's not a magic button. People think managers are a
- 5:15Speaker 1: magic button. Like it's also I think what it is
- 5:17Speaker 1: is what some people fuck up is they get a
- 5:19Speaker 1: manager and then they stop doing the work. That's not it.
- 5:22Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. The artist is the car. The
- 5:24Speaker 1: manager is the GPS. The GPS make this road smooth,
- 5:29Speaker 1: lead you to the right way, guide you you know
- 5:31Speaker 1: you're going on track. Now, this is the way we
- 5:33Speaker 1: need to get to where we need to get to,
- 5:35Speaker 1: or show you exactly Like some people don't even have
- 5:37Speaker 1: a plan for this. So so I'm going to show
- 5:39Speaker 1: you where you and your talent can get you to
- 5:42Speaker 1: and this is the way we need to do it.
- 5:43Speaker 1: To get to this part, you almost want an artist
- 5:47Speaker 1: who kind of self manages as well, if that makes sense,
- 5:52Speaker 1: because something man I mean, like I've seen it where
- 5:54Speaker 1: there's like people who they really need their handheld through
- 5:58Speaker 1: every little step of the way, and every artist is different.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Some people need a little more handhelding than others. Some
- 6:03Speaker 1: people are totally so sufficient, and some artists are like,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, they need the call in the morning. You'll
- 6:11Speaker 1: get up. You know you have a thing today, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: your flight his itinerary. Some people I could just shoot
- 6:17Speaker 1: a text and like yo, I'm on my way there,
- 6:18Speaker 1: and the artists might be like, oh, man, already you
- 6:20Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. So yeah, so you just played
- 6:22Speaker 1: it by I guess you just kind of play it.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's ala carte. It's no one managing style that fits
- 6:26Speaker 1: every artist. That's real. That's that's that's fair for you.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Like if if someone's watching this, who's like an up
- 6:34Speaker 1: and coming rapper, up and coming singer, Like, there's so
- 6:37Speaker 1: many what is that noise? Oh? Is it is? It?
- 6:45Speaker 1: Is it coming in from that room? Is that that
- 6:47Speaker 1: UFC fight? Is that what that is? Yeah? In UFC
- 6:53Speaker 1: on YouTube? I'm like, what the fuck is going on?
- 6:55Speaker 1: I'm like sports that have been playing in my ear na,
- 6:59Speaker 1: But just into terms of like, you know, the music
- 7:01Speaker 1: industry is always changing. You know, we always hear about
- 7:06Speaker 1: like I was just saying like south By Southwest is
- 7:11Speaker 1: next week, and I'm like, man, you know how many
- 7:12Speaker 1: young up and coming artists about to get taken advantage
- 7:14Speaker 1: of next week? Southwest used to be a jungle. They're
- 7:18Speaker 1: going to drop a bag on some shitty stage that
- 7:20Speaker 1: ain't gonna do nothing for them. But in terms of
- 7:22Speaker 1: like the things that you see artists making mistakes with,
- 7:26Speaker 1: maybe like financially because nowadays you can't buy your way
- 7:31Speaker 1: onto playlists. You can buy streams. That shit is not sustainable,
- 7:35Speaker 1: though you can fake the funk that's not sustainable. You
- 7:38Speaker 1: can do all these things, right, So, like you buy
- 7:40Speaker 1: streams and then you have to actually go out on
- 7:43Speaker 1: the road and go on a tour and you can't
- 7:45Speaker 1: sell no tickets, so it doesn't equate. All right, you
- 7:48Speaker 1: got seven million monthly listeners, but you can't feel the
- 7:51Speaker 1: fill of five hundred cap rooms right, Like you can
- 7:55Speaker 1: fake it, but eventually the proof is in the putting
- 7:58Speaker 1: on the back end. Are you guys able to see
- 8:00Speaker 1: if someone's full of ship with their streams? You know?
- 8:05Speaker 1: So let's say you guys are interested. Have you ever
- 8:07Speaker 1: been interested in an artist and saw their metrics and
- 8:10Speaker 1: been like, oh, that Okay, the music is dope, but
- 8:12Speaker 1: then check their numbers and they were for gazy. You
- 8:14Speaker 1: check the numbers and the eye test doesn't fool. You
- 8:17Speaker 1: start to look like the comments don't match X. Amount
- 8:20Speaker 1: of people not talking about this, especially on the YouTube
- 8:23Speaker 1: is very telling. If you if you got fake YouTube views,
- 8:26Speaker 1: it's so. And then even if you had a bunch
- 8:29Speaker 1: of comments, if they're fucking rushing bots or whatever, you're like, like,
- 8:33Speaker 1: if you really do your homework, it don't just get
- 8:34Speaker 1: blinded by numbers. You dig a little deep and you
- 8:37Speaker 1: have some type of comment sense about you. You could
- 8:39Speaker 1: tell you look, you'd be like, nah, it's not real.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You know when something feels real, Like you've been in post.
- 8:45Speaker 1: You've been in this game long enough to know when
- 8:48Speaker 1: something's sure. You have enough relationships and friends in certain markets,
- 8:52Speaker 1: like if something going on New York, you're gonna call me,
- 8:54Speaker 1: is this heating up out here? And like I would
- 8:58Speaker 1: do that for you in markets right right, right, right right,
- 9:01Speaker 1: And he'd be like, nah, no, I don't know, I
- 9:02Speaker 1: never heard it. I'll be seeing that s all the time. Bro.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Someone was saying, may y'all, I got three million views
- 9:06Speaker 1: on my video and I'll check it. It It shiit out
- 9:08Speaker 1: like eleven comments. I'm like bron it's nancy. It just
- 9:11Speaker 1: put the work in, man, just put the work in.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But I mean then you have other the other side
- 9:17Speaker 1: of the coin where you'll hear an artists saying that
- 9:18Speaker 1: even major labels are beefing up the numbers, are juicing
- 9:21Speaker 1: the numbers they've been. It's not fact like we didn't
- 9:23Speaker 1: know record label used to buy copies when it was
- 9:26Speaker 1: vinyls and CDs back in the day. There's nothing new.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Is just a digital age is easiest the same thing. Yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 1: they used to go buy buy our records to try
- 9:32Speaker 1: to get Look what's his projections, Yo, he's gonna be
- 9:35Speaker 1: one hundred thousand short of doing number one. Yo, we're
- 9:39Speaker 1: gonna go buy those. It's gonna be sitting in the
- 9:41Speaker 1: White House somewhere and we're gonna do this is nothing new.
- 9:43Speaker 1: This is they've been doing it. Regulate, We've been doing
- 9:46Speaker 1: this new ship. It's just in a digital format. Now,
- 9:50Speaker 1: how do you know? I think the biggest thing that
- 9:53Speaker 1: like it is like a wall that a lot of
- 9:55Speaker 1: rappers will hit that they maybe don't necessarily understand is
- 10:00Speaker 1: the playlist shit is the Spotify shit. It's like it
- 10:02Speaker 1: feels like almost I'm sure for a lot of artists,
- 10:06Speaker 1: like an impossible task to get on some playlists. I
- 10:09Speaker 1: think I tell artists all the time, man, don't focus
- 10:13Speaker 1: on getting the attention of industry people in playlisters. Focus
- 10:18Speaker 1: on one fan a day. You know what I'm saying.
- 10:20Speaker 1: You focus on growing your fan base. You might have
- 10:23Speaker 1: ten fans, cater to them and grow them fans. Don't
- 10:26Speaker 1: focus on nothing outside of your control because all you're
- 10:28Speaker 1: gonna end up getting is taken advantage of by people
- 10:31Speaker 1: who say, I can get you on this playlist. Yeah,
- 10:34Speaker 1: because if you if you focus on the fans and
- 10:36Speaker 1: you build I mean that, all that other shit's gonna come.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It's gonna come. But if you're not, they're gonna see, Oh,
- 10:41Speaker 1: he got the craziest following. Let me put him on
- 10:43Speaker 1: this playlist because it's gonna help us, you know what
- 10:45Speaker 1: I mean. I think that. I think I think Russ
- 10:47Speaker 1: is somebody who probably initially had that perspective because he
- 10:50Speaker 1: used to just he always talks about how Jeans I
- 10:53Speaker 1: used to email all the blogs and they would never
- 10:55Speaker 1: give no fucking attention. And then once he started just
- 10:57Speaker 1: focusing on his world. That's it sounds so corny and cliche,
- 11:03Speaker 1: like I be telling people stuff and like even like
- 11:05Speaker 1: I teach a college class and I'll be telling people like, yo,
- 11:08Speaker 1: what you get in? You getting what you put out?
- 11:11Speaker 1: You get what you put in, Like it's the cliche,
- 11:13Speaker 1: the truth, it's the truth. Don't focus on people like yo,
- 11:17Speaker 1: how can I get your attention, big dog? Don't worry
- 11:20Speaker 1: about me. Get the fans up, and when fans start
- 11:23Speaker 1: going crazy, I'm going to see it and I'm going
- 11:24Speaker 1: to come holler at you. Don't focus on getting nobody
- 11:27Speaker 1: in the music. But people do that because they think
- 11:29Speaker 1: if I have you, it's going to be easy. No,
- 11:32Speaker 1: just do the work. Focus on your fan base, making
- 11:35Speaker 1: organic fans, creating organic fan interactions. Focus on growing your
- 11:42Speaker 1: merch base, having people train that they have to buy
- 11:45Speaker 1: stuff from you. Focus on doing shows locally and growing
- 11:49Speaker 1: your shows and selling hard tickets, training your fan base
- 11:51Speaker 1: to do that and just grow it. Don't focus on
- 11:54Speaker 1: getting the attention on music industry person or no playlists, YO.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Talk about like for you, the transparency between the artists
- 12:06Speaker 1: and like major record labels and what a major record
- 12:10Speaker 1: label deal would look like typically has been like as
- 12:14Speaker 1: high as ever you see like Meek Mill talking about
- 12:16Speaker 1: or YG talks about it, and me a young boy
- 12:18Speaker 1: just called it Atlantic Records like for a month straight
- 12:21Speaker 1: and then did like my thing is like it if
- 12:25Speaker 1: you're kind of give people like an idea, because I
- 12:28Speaker 1: don't think a lot of people understand like how an
- 12:30Speaker 1: advance works. And I think all those artists who get
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's alone, it's alone. It's a shitty loan. It's alone,
- 12:36Speaker 1: very shitty. It's because if I, if I finance a
- 12:40Speaker 1: house for you, right, you are a house. After you
- 12:42Speaker 1: pay it back, you own the house, right even after
- 12:45Speaker 1: you that money is recouped. That's the worst. It's the
- 12:48Speaker 1: worst ship. Yeah, So alone alone is like advance is
- 12:52Speaker 1: just a loan with like you said, shitty terms. But
- 12:55Speaker 1: a lot of times these artists are in destitute in
- 12:58Speaker 1: polished situations, so they go to take anything and sign anything.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It's not the label's fault, per se. It's a little predatory.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It's predatory for it's predatory. But that's why you're supposed
- 13:08Speaker 1: to have a good lawyer or a manager. I think
- 13:12Speaker 1: because I can't. I can't fault nobody for falling for
- 13:15Speaker 1: anything you signed. You sign it. This layers between when megan,
- 13:19Speaker 1: like the whole Megan thing with Carl Crawford's going, I'm like, Yo,
- 13:21Speaker 1: you signed and you're supposed to have management and you're
- 13:25Speaker 1: supposed to have a lawyer who looks out for that.
- 13:28Speaker 1: If you failed those two things, you got to say,
- 13:31Speaker 1: you know what, I hired the wrong team and I
- 13:34Speaker 1: signed the wrong deal. It was my fault is the
- 13:36Speaker 1: label was gonna do what the label's gonna do. They've
- 13:38Speaker 1: been doing this. It's not nothing new. You getting tricked
- 13:41Speaker 1: by antics that they did since the start of music.
- 13:44Speaker 1: People was complaining about deals and contracts in the nineteen forties. Yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 1: so it's like, you see this, but you decide to
- 13:52Speaker 1: forego that or you don't have the right people to
- 13:54Speaker 1: explain it to you. And you signed that deal, and
- 13:57Speaker 1: if it's fucked up, you have to be a man
- 13:59Speaker 1: or a woman's Yo, my team that I hired or
- 14:03Speaker 1: my team that was given to me that I didn't investigate,
- 14:07Speaker 1: allowed me to sign this and fucked It's fucked up
- 14:10Speaker 1: and I wanted to change. But don't say, yo, they
- 14:13Speaker 1: took advantage of me. They gave you something that they
- 14:15Speaker 1: would give anybody, and they also, I mean you took
- 14:20Speaker 1: the you took the back. Like my thing is that.
- 14:22Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Like, you know what when you
- 14:25Speaker 1: was fucked up and you had one hundred dollars in
- 14:26Speaker 1: your pocket and they told he was gonna give you
- 14:28Speaker 1: advance of seven hundred thousand, you was like, give it
- 14:31Speaker 1: to me. I'm gonna sign it. You know what I'm saying.
- 14:32Speaker 1: It's like people figure out the rest later. It's like
- 14:34Speaker 1: people who have a bad attitude at a store. But like, Yo,
- 14:37Speaker 1: when you were actu your job interview, I'm pretty sure
- 14:39Speaker 1: you weren't like this. You're really happy to That's like
- 14:42Speaker 1: like like the ship meet Milby saying, I'm like, yo, Meek,
- 14:45Speaker 1: every time you turn into an album, you know your
- 14:48Speaker 1: advances in the seven figures. So it's like, you know
- 14:51Speaker 1: what it is like, I don't know what a Meek
- 14:53Speaker 1: Meal album is worked nowadays from the labels perspective's at
- 14:56Speaker 1: least he's at least getting at least two to five
- 15:00Speaker 1: million every time. No, I love Meek, but like I
- 15:03Speaker 1: also think though you can outperform your contract, I definitely
- 15:07Speaker 1: feel like so if you outperform your contract, they like
- 15:10Speaker 1: there should be some sort of clause where I believe
- 15:12Speaker 1: there should be almost like almost like sports. I believe
- 15:16Speaker 1: the contract ain't up yet, but we need to renegotiate.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Let's let's keep it fair, Kyler Murray right now, Yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 1: let's Kyler Murray. Let's let's keep it feel because some
- 15:22Speaker 1: of these artists, they sign these deals where they're when
- 15:25Speaker 1: they're young, when they're unknown, the unknown, they're in a
- 15:27Speaker 1: fucking situation, give me the bag, and then, like we said,
- 15:30Speaker 1: it's predatory of the label, they might make this label
- 15:34Speaker 1: hundreds of millions of dollars. Y'all can say, you know what,
- 15:38Speaker 1: we gotta switch this up. Let's send justice, let's be fair.
- 15:41Speaker 1: But there's nobody to hold the music people accountable for that.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Like it's just yeah, there's a very few people who
- 15:47Speaker 1: do that kind of shit. I feel like Shipes is
- 15:48Speaker 1: the kind of guy that Shipes is, like, Yo, you
- 15:50Speaker 1: know what, we need to fix this up. You know
- 15:52Speaker 1: what I'm saying, I'm very artist friendly. Let's let's fix
- 15:55Speaker 1: this deal up. You know what I'm saying. No, in
- 15:57Speaker 1: terms of like you want people to stay with you too, yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and you want to be you just want to be
- 16:01Speaker 1: a good human being, a fair person. Like yo, listen,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I'm all for getting money. I love getting money. Getting
- 16:06Speaker 1: money it gives you freedom to do the things you
- 16:08Speaker 1: need to do. But you don't want to take nothing
- 16:10Speaker 1: from nobody else out of somebody else pocket, you know
- 16:12Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Let that person get what they're earned
- 16:14Speaker 1: and what's fit to them as all as well. Who's
- 16:18Speaker 1: been for you? Like you know, I think during the
- 16:22Speaker 1: pandemic there's been like some m VPS man on the
- 16:26Speaker 1: rapper side who's kind of been your pandemic m v
- 16:28Speaker 1: P ship, m v P man. I don't know, I
- 16:33Speaker 1: don't know. There's been a couple of m vps. The
- 16:36Speaker 1: hands down m v P of the pandemic has been
- 16:39Speaker 1: versus versus D Nice and versus D Nice. Early on,
- 16:43Speaker 1: for sure he had it, but the verses until the
- 16:48Speaker 1: feats all feats, the alleged feats. He was probably him
- 16:55Speaker 1: to re Lanes, was it? I just mean in terms
- 16:59Speaker 1: of like, uh, I think, I don't know. I look
- 17:01Speaker 1: at guys like I think Freddy's up there, Conways up there, Oh,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I mean Conway is gonna do what I just mean?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Like yo, Like, yeah, I just feel like like output
- 17:11Speaker 1: as artists. I don't know, man, it wasn't nobody that
- 17:16Speaker 1: really sees the moment that grabbed it like that put
- 17:18Speaker 1: a feeling or uh like when we look back little
- 17:22Speaker 1: Baby maybe yeah, little Baby was high before. I feel
- 17:25Speaker 1: like it just went to another level. He was high before.
- 17:27Speaker 1: He's gonna bet after a Little Baby's special. I'm just saying,
- 17:30Speaker 1: like it's nobody that ten years from now, we're going
- 17:33Speaker 1: to look back and like, Yo, this is the sound
- 17:35Speaker 1: of those two years with Maybe Kendrick could drop an
- 17:37Speaker 1: album and it embodies I think. I feel like I
- 17:39Speaker 1: feel like we're past it. I feel like it has it.
- 17:41Speaker 1: They dropped that they dropped the mask man day in
- 17:44Speaker 1: LA I said, all right, find it is it is
- 17:46Speaker 1: it mandated in New York State. He just dropped it
- 17:48Speaker 1: on the seventh. Are you are you still a Knicks
- 17:51Speaker 1: fan or you a net fan? Baby? You dreamp. I've
- 17:54Speaker 1: been to Brooklyn. That's fan for since they came to
- 17:56Speaker 1: the day they came to Brooklyn, the day are you
- 17:58Speaker 1: sure it was? The day went to their first game.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Was at that first game. Shout to Adidas, shout to
- 18:03Speaker 1: John Wexler. Was at the first game and the Adidas
- 18:06Speaker 1: Sweet So first day Natecine to Brooklyn, I'm rocking with him.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I'm from I'm from Brooklyn before from New York. What's
- 18:15Speaker 1: up with everyone who was on BSB? Do you want
- 18:20Speaker 1: to talk to anybody? Lido? That's the crow I love. Man.
- 18:26Speaker 1: He just just started doing music again. Yeah, what the fuck?
- 18:28Speaker 1: He let Haddo had some momentum leaders running around. Man,
- 18:32Speaker 1: little had to get get hisself together. He got himself together.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Now he's back at it. He kind of fell out
- 18:38Speaker 1: of love for music. You know, that makes sense. He
- 18:40Speaker 1: was was like, Yo, I'm good. He I don't want
- 18:43Speaker 1: to talk about his money, but he good place. So
- 18:46Speaker 1: it's like, you know what I'm saying. He got in
- 18:47Speaker 1: a good place and he's like, man music, but now
- 18:49Speaker 1: he kind of would you would you manage Leado again?
- 18:53Speaker 1: I that's that's like whenever whenever he ready, you had
- 18:57Speaker 1: that Lado. Whenever you're ready, it's good to go whenever
- 18:59Speaker 1: he It's a certain people that like, you know, yo,
- 19:02Speaker 1: we got to take a break in the interview real quick.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Tell you about our folks at my bookie. Man, this
- 19:06Speaker 1: is my favorite time of the year to gamble. I
- 19:09Speaker 1: love gambling on sports, and if you've been thinking about
- 19:12Speaker 1: putting your toe into the pool, come and join me
- 19:15Speaker 1: at my bookie. Okay, right now, we're doing a promotion,

- 19:26Speaker 1: is March madness. The NCAA tournament is here, the brackets
- 19:29Speaker 1: is getting filled out. What I need y'all to do
- 19:32Speaker 1: also is go on to my bookie when you sign up.

- 20:09Speaker 1: L e g. One word when you sign up, and
- 20:12Speaker 1: your first deposit will be matched up to one thousand
- 20:15Speaker 1: dollars in free money. Let's get back to the interview
- 20:17Speaker 1: for young managers watching this who maybe have an undiscovered
- 20:21Speaker 1: talent that they're trying to break, like whoever it might be,
- 20:25Speaker 1: whatever city it might be, and what would be advice
- 20:26Speaker 1: you'd give them? Formulate a team. That's one, Like, you
- 20:30Speaker 1: need a team. You need a social media person, social media,
- 20:34Speaker 1: digital marketing. You need a cameraman, you need a producer,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you need an engineer, you need a PR person. The
- 20:40Speaker 1: PR person can come a little bit later on, when
- 20:42Speaker 1: it is when you need it. Formulate a team and
- 20:44Speaker 1: start building. Create a plan and stick to it. Don't
- 20:46Speaker 1: have no plan. B's believe in God, keep it fair,
- 20:50Speaker 1: keep it ethical, and work. Don't take everything on by yourself. No, no,
- 20:54Speaker 1: it's impossible. Yeah, it's impossible. You have a team. You
- 20:57Speaker 1: know what I'm saying people when PR come, because you
- 21:00Speaker 1: know a lot of times I think I see artists
- 21:02Speaker 1: do the PR thing too soon. As needed, I would say,
- 21:05Speaker 1: as needed, just like cooking. You know, you know at
- 21:09Speaker 1: what they say to taste, to taste when when needed,
- 21:12Speaker 1: When when you get to the point where your faces
- 21:14Speaker 1: need to be seen in your city and you need
- 21:16Speaker 1: to be at every party, and you need to be
- 21:17Speaker 1: in the mix. You need to know the right shit.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Then you get a pr when people are calling actioning
- 21:21Speaker 1: for interviews for you and shit like that, then you
- 21:23Speaker 1: need a p all. Until then you don't need it.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But the other things you need. You need a videographer
- 21:28Speaker 1: trailing you every day, studio sessions, you need an engineer,
- 21:31Speaker 1: you need a producer, and you need a digital marketer.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And when after you get to that point, you need
- 21:37Speaker 1: a playlister. What's a digital marketer? Somebody who like, you know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you see these things on these websites, star generation, getting
- 21:44Speaker 1: you that those looks you see you think these should
- 21:46Speaker 1: just happen organically, like, of course not. Yeah, So there's
- 21:50Speaker 1: somebody who has a relationship with these people. They're kind
- 21:52Speaker 1: of like somebody who used to work radio records at
- 21:54Speaker 1: radio that relationship across the country with the DJs. What
- 21:58Speaker 1: is a playlister playlist somebody who you don't playlist. You
- 22:01Speaker 1: know what I'm saying that use a curated playlist as well,
- 22:04Speaker 1: because use your curated playlists are very important. They're kind
- 22:06Speaker 1: of like a all these things cost money everything, so
- 22:11Speaker 1: save your money. What is that a dollar? Like like
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, let's say, what's the minimum dollar amount somebody
- 22:16Speaker 1: should like try to save up before they really start
- 22:19Speaker 1: trying to build that ship out, because that's those aren't
- 22:21Speaker 1: cheap things to put together. I mean you gotta maybe
- 22:24Speaker 1: you might be able to get a free videographer starting
- 22:27Speaker 1: out that believes in you, just same with your engineers,
- 22:30Speaker 1: same with the producer. They all believe in playlisting and
- 22:33Speaker 1: the digital marketing word. So what's that dollar amount? You
- 22:36Speaker 1: think minimum A good digital guy is gonna be at
- 22:40Speaker 1: least at least Fitteen one hundred twenty five hundred campaign.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Then you're gonna need money to actually give that person
- 22:49Speaker 1: to run the campaigns. We're gonna get incentive, we're gonna
- 22:52Speaker 1: do it. We're gonna see these videos out and we're
- 22:55Speaker 1: gonna do this content and it's gonna cost x amount.
- 22:58Speaker 1: We're gonna buy this amount of Uh you know what
- 23:01Speaker 1: I'm saying. So you need actual money to give that person,
- 23:04Speaker 1: well the digital market handle your YouTube ads? Yes, okay,
- 23:08Speaker 1: good one, which is important? TRUEVI you true you? What's
- 23:11Speaker 1: true of you? True view is like the It's like
- 23:14Speaker 1: when you see, say a Snoop Dogg video come on,
- 23:18Speaker 1: and after it, right into it, a YG or somebody
- 23:22Speaker 1: video come on like something that's very similar algorithms. You
- 23:25Speaker 1: want to piggyback off that algorithm. You know what I'm saying.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So when you see a high performing video video that
- 23:31Speaker 1: comes right after it, you know what I'm saying. That
- 23:33Speaker 1: makes sense. So we think about five five bands, say
- 23:37Speaker 1: I want to drop a single. If you want to
- 23:38Speaker 1: drop a single, you drop a project single. A single.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I said, you should have ten thousand dollars. Ten thousand dollars,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and that's low low, and make sure your singles mix
- 23:49Speaker 1: it mastered. Make sure you got money to shoot a
- 23:52Speaker 1: decent video. You get a decent video shot for cheap.
- 23:54Speaker 1: You don't got to get a decent video shot for cheap.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Then you need somebody who's going to work it at
- 24:00Speaker 1: the playlist level, you know what I'm saying. Somebody who's
- 24:03Speaker 1: going to service it. But there it is. And then
- 24:07Speaker 1: another person on the team. When you really you see
- 24:09Speaker 1: how your team gets so big, then why this person
- 24:12Speaker 1: got all these people? You need somebody who is gonna
- 24:14Speaker 1: pitt your shit For Saints, to the movies and TVs.
- 24:17Speaker 1: That's a that's a bag as well a sink person.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The sink thing is uh sing because they because they
- 24:23Speaker 1: work off of commission, a lot of them. So it's
- 24:24Speaker 1: like if they don't get you nothing, If you don't
- 24:26Speaker 1: get you know, you're playing nothing. But so so these
- 24:28Speaker 1: people you're talking about. If someone's in Wichita, Kansas and
- 24:31Speaker 1: they don't know any how do they find How do
- 24:33Speaker 1: you find these people? Nigga? If you know and wich
- 24:34Speaker 1: It Talk Kansas, you gotta go where these people are.
- 24:36Speaker 1: You gotta go to New York, gotta go to LA. Yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 1: that's like any job. If I'm trying to be an actor,
- 24:41Speaker 1: you gotta get the fuck out of what's a good
- 24:42Speaker 1: chance that I'm not going to be an actor in
- 24:44Speaker 1: which it's all I'm gonna have to move to LA
- 24:46Speaker 1: or New York have to come and get noticed. So
- 24:47Speaker 1: I mean, you take your crab seriously. You got to
- 24:49Speaker 1: go where the people are. Are you the type of
- 24:52Speaker 1: UH manager who will work with an artist based strictly
- 24:58Speaker 1: on how good the music is in maybe there's no
- 25:00Speaker 1: numbers behind. I'm not a number chaser, and sometimes you
- 25:04Speaker 1: got to go with your feeling. It's like baseball, like
- 25:06Speaker 1: everything is now is like not by the coach, can't
- 25:09Speaker 1: really call it's all analytic based, analytic based money ball shit.
- 25:14Speaker 1: That's not how you you feel a star like, you
- 25:17Speaker 1: get their star quality when you see them, when you
- 25:19Speaker 1: meet them, you know what I'm saying, watching them interact
- 25:21Speaker 1: with people, watching them perform, So that can't be just
- 25:24Speaker 1: dictated by numbers. You know what I'm saying. That's a feeling,
- 25:26Speaker 1: that's I mean, that's real. I think that's you want
- 25:28Speaker 1: to do a mix, you want to be a hybrid.
- 25:30Speaker 1: You definitely don't want to start. I know me at
- 25:32Speaker 1: this point, I'm too busy to start with artists who
- 25:34Speaker 1: are at zero. So if you're at a four or five,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I can help, But if you got twelve Instagram followers,
- 25:42Speaker 1: it's like I can't do that. And there's other managers
- 25:45Speaker 1: at this point that can then or willing to do.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Have you done that where like someone will come to
- 25:49Speaker 1: you and you're like, yeah, I see the potential, but
- 25:51Speaker 1: I can't take this on right now every day. Let
- 25:53Speaker 1: me lob this to somebody who's like, who's like some
- 25:56Speaker 1: of the other managers that you fuck with that youth. Man,
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's a lot. I don't want to nobody out and
- 26:00Speaker 1: get offended. I funk with a lot of manages. Man,
- 26:05Speaker 1: Who's who's your big homie in the manager game? See,
- 26:08Speaker 1: I don't really have a big homie. Has somebody I
- 26:09Speaker 1: looked up to eventually rest in peace, Chris Lighty, But like,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I don't have no big homie. It wasn't no in
- 26:16Speaker 1: terms of just like somebody who mentoreds you. Nobody, nobody
- 26:19Speaker 1: like you know what I'm saying. At the time when
- 26:22Speaker 1: I was really trying to understand music, I wasn't around
- 26:24Speaker 1: a bunch of managers. Was lucky, luckily enough, around a
- 26:28Speaker 1: bunch of executives, Like I was hanging with Sycamore every day.
- 26:31Speaker 1: We were going to Hot Crib. Joey II and Tod
- 26:34Speaker 1: Moscowis used to let me sit in the office at Asylum,
- 26:37Speaker 1: like picking up on deals and what's going on and
- 26:39Speaker 1: ship like that. I wasn't around the managers, but like WAYNEO,
- 26:44Speaker 1: Wayne's managed, no more executive. These are my friends, like
- 26:49Speaker 1: the people, the people of the culture. That's I was
- 26:52Speaker 1: a great guy. Yeah, yo, we got to stop the
- 26:53Speaker 1: interview real quick. Shout out to our presenting sponsor odds Socks. Baby,
- 26:57Speaker 1: hey man, listen, all I keep on my ass is draws.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I'll keeping my feet odd socks. You know why because
- 27:02Speaker 1: they are the most comfortable socks in the world. And
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'm not just saying this because they promote the podcast.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I'm telling you. The socks are crazy. They got all
- 27:10Speaker 1: the licenses. Look, they got Halloween socks, they have Back
- 27:14Speaker 1: to the Future socks. They got fucking Twizzler socks, old
- 27:17Speaker 1: dirty Bastard socks, rip to odb all right. They also
- 27:21Speaker 1: got their draws if you want to wear some underwear
- 27:23Speaker 1: with Pizzael on them, whatever you need. But my favorite
- 27:26Speaker 1: are the odd socks are basics, Baby, These are just
- 27:28Speaker 1: the plain boys. These, to me are the most comfortable

- 28:09Speaker 1: using that promo code Bootleg Calve. Let's get back to
- 28:11Speaker 1: the interview. Obviously you work with Cinematic, but would you
- 28:13Speaker 1: ever start your own imprint again? Yeah? You see the
- 28:17Speaker 1: dope thing about how the dealers with shipes like I have.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I still have my own management outside, Like yeah, the
- 28:23Speaker 1: banks instead styles away from Cinematic, hope ain't doing good management.
- 28:27Speaker 1: So you know what I'm saying, Like I managed people
- 28:29Speaker 1: on the outside of that, so I never stopped having
- 28:32Speaker 1: my own thing. I mean just like a record label though,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Oh record label, that's I think that might be my
- 28:38Speaker 1: next phase. Like finding an artist and really just breaking them.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I think that might be my next phase. I think
- 28:43Speaker 1: how you see artists, Oh, now you see executives kind
- 28:47Speaker 1: of like doing that nowadays, like the top monscho is
- 28:49Speaker 1: how he's with Gucci and Leo, how he's with Doug,
- 28:52Speaker 1: How you have one guy? That might that might be
- 28:54Speaker 1: my next phase, like finding artists and signing him to
- 28:58Speaker 1: me and that might be my next thing. Shout out
- 29:00Speaker 1: to Hovan, Where are you teaching at Kingsborough Community College?
- 29:04Speaker 1: A teacher college course on the business of music once
- 29:07Speaker 1: a week, no not once a week no more. It's semester,
- 29:09Speaker 1: semester base, but it was ten weeks a ten week semester.
- 29:13Speaker 1: So I did it two times. I'm doing it again.
- 29:16Speaker 1: We're coming back in the middle of April and I'm
- 29:18Speaker 1: gonna have nothing but female guest hosts. Oh fire. Yeah.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Last semester I had Charlemagne beat out Rob Markman. Shipes
- 29:27Speaker 1: did it zoom on zoom because of the much much
- 29:30Speaker 1: easier than it's easy hop on a zoom real quick. Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:33Speaker 1: So it used to be every Monday for ten weeks.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Iurt and a half class. So I talked to the
- 29:38Speaker 1: kids about different ship I have shipes coming to them,
- 29:41Speaker 1: talking about entrepreneurialship beat out, talking to them about podcasts
- 29:45Speaker 1: and the media right, talking to them about journalism. They
- 29:48Speaker 1: learned every aspect of the music. I had our CFO
- 29:50Speaker 1: come talk to them about mechanical royalties and payments and like,
- 29:54Speaker 1: they learned every aspect of music. So this semester I'm
- 29:59Speaker 1: gonna I have nothing but female female managers A and rs.
- 30:02Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. You know it's crazy because
- 30:05Speaker 1: you mentioned the royalties and mechanicals and all that shit.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I do feel like the pub side of the music
- 30:10Speaker 1: industry it's unknown. Well it's the most it just feels
- 30:12Speaker 1: like the most confusing. I sit down with my CFO,
- 30:16Speaker 1: the CFO by company, and he gives me like a
- 30:20Speaker 1: class to myself. I'm still learning as as somebody who's
- 30:24Speaker 1: been in this game. And you know what I'm saying,
- 30:26Speaker 1: There's certain things that he told me that I don't
- 30:28Speaker 1: really fully understand. And I go home and do some
- 30:30Speaker 1: homework and read on it, Like, hey, what can I read?
- 30:32Speaker 1: Can you show me some contracts that you know what
- 30:34Speaker 1: I'm saying. It's a lot to learn and you have
