- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from News Talk. Sa'd be

- 0:16Speaker 2: Very Soper, Senior Political Correspondence. Here, Hi, Barry, good afternoon.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Hither we don't have time to talk about it. But
- 0:21Speaker 3: I don't agree with what you said about luxon which
- 0:25Speaker 3: part that he would be gone before the election?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Okay, well how much.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Of what I don't know? Nice bottle of whiskey would do.
- 0:35Speaker 5: Okay, good bottle of whiskey. On that, I say he's
- 0:37Speaker 5: gone before the election, and you say he's not. Answer,
- 0:39Speaker 5: you're writing that down for me because I always forget
- 0:41Speaker 5: my bits and then I forget.
- 0:42Speaker 2: To pay all you do blame more likely in this case.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Ace.
- 0:48Speaker 2: All right, So what did you make of Willis's press conference?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's interesting, isn't it that Chris Luxen's
- 0:54Speaker 3: overseas at the moment in some more and Nikola Willis
- 0:59Speaker 3: held a news conference at one o'clock reminded me of
- 1:01Speaker 3: the COVID days. Although the last words she uttered at
- 1:05Speaker 3: the news conference that she wasn't speaking from the not
- 1:09Speaker 3: the pulpit I always called at the pole, which she
- 1:10Speaker 3: said the podium of truth.
- 1:13Speaker 4: You know, we'll get regular updates.
- 1:15Speaker 3: She's doing another one on Wednesday. But what she's saying
- 1:19Speaker 3: essentially is don't panic. And you remember the head of
- 1:22Speaker 3: the New Zealand Rabishanka. He said don't panic, but panic slowly.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So you know, it's not a great situation at the
- 1:31Speaker 3: moment because the longer this goes on in the Middle East,
- 1:37Speaker 3: the longer, the harder it's going to be for the
- 1:40Speaker 3: New Zealand economy. I don't think anybody doubts that with
- 1:44Speaker 3: the Prime Minister being in Samoa, I will have held
- 1:46Speaker 3: that news conference and had a message aimed at soothing
- 1:50Speaker 3: those of us who are worried about what she says.
- 1:54Speaker 3: The government is doing on our.
- 1:55Speaker 6: Behalf, mitigating the impact on the New Zealand economy, including
- 2:00Speaker 6: what could potentially be acute cost of living pressures for
- 2:03Speaker 6: some households. I've spoken to each of the chief executives
- 2:07Speaker 6: of the major commissioner banks and they have assured me
- 2:10Speaker 6: that in the first instance, they will be providing an
- 2:13Speaker 6: umbrella to businesses that they already work with to ensure
- 2:17Speaker 6: that they can take them through this challenging time. From
- 2:20Speaker 6: the government's point of view, we need to ensure that
- 2:23Speaker 6: any support we provide to households is temporary, is targeted,
- 2:28Speaker 6: and is timely. Officials have advised us explicitly that reducing
- 2:33Speaker 6: fuel excize would send the wrong signal at this time
- 2:37Speaker 6: and it would not be sufficiently targeted.
- 2:40Speaker 4: There you go, So nothing to worry about.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Have you been speaking to Chris Hopkins's ex wife today.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I've been in a text conversation with her years she's
- 2:48Speaker 3: in Fiji at the moment with their two children. And
- 2:54Speaker 3: what she said to me simply was that she stood
- 2:57Speaker 3: by everything she said in her Facebook post. And what
- 3:00Speaker 3: she said in the Facebook post, of course, is for
- 3:03Speaker 3: Chris Hopkins is not complementary, to say the.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Very least at all.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And I see you posing the question is what should
- 3:12Speaker 3: he do? Well, you know, the great difficulty is you'll remember.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It reminds me a bit of the David Longie Naomi
- 3:21Speaker 3: Longie fallout that a mate of mine was sitting at
- 3:24Speaker 3: a desk and the Sunday Star Times and the phone
- 3:26Speaker 3: went and it was Naomi on the phone. This is
- 3:28Speaker 3: after he had stepped down and she said he was
- 3:31Speaker 3: having an affair and suddenly all hell broke loose. Not
- 3:34Speaker 3: that he had to worry about it because he was
- 3:36Speaker 3: no longer the Prime Minister, but he essentially did nothing.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And I think you know, when you have issues like this,
- 3:45Speaker 3: they are damning. Many of the public will know, and
- 3:49Speaker 3: the gossip machine will be working overtime. Who knows what
- 3:53Speaker 3: social media will do with it. But I think he's
- 3:56Speaker 3: probably right to keep storm about the whole.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Thing, is he because he's considering legal action? Should he
- 4:03Speaker 2: take it?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Well, if what his former wife Jade Paul said, and
- 4:11Speaker 3: she says it's true, you can imagine the dirty linen
- 4:14Speaker 3: that would come out. I know Jade Paul, she used
- 4:17Speaker 3: to work around Parliament, a very nice young woman.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I mean their marriage.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Lasted a very short time. They had two children in
- 4:24Speaker 3: it and was only a couple of years, and they
- 4:27Speaker 3: got married at Premiere House in twenty twenty when, of
- 4:32Speaker 3: course Jasin Dardun was the Prime Minister's she was there
- 4:36Speaker 3: and Grant Robertson was Chippy's best man. So you know,
- 4:41Speaker 3: it's one of those ghastly things because you know a
- 4:44Speaker 3: lot of people and I heard your scenario about when
- 4:48Speaker 3: people do split up. This terrible things about said on
- 4:50Speaker 3: either side, and that certainly does happen.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I've known it over the years, but yeah, if I was.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Him, there's no point in him because coming out, because
- 5:02Speaker 3: he'll simply fuel it.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he will.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Although a good bit of legal action sometimes also does
- 5:07Speaker 5: indicate that you or if you're feeling confident.
- 5:09Speaker 4: That it's not true.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Barry, thanks very much, appreciate a very sober senior political correspondent.
