- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Don't you sometimes want to misbehave?
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Day Drinker Trader Review.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: This yacht has more secrets than lifeboats.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Johnny Depp walks into a private yacht looking like he knows everybody's secrets.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Madeline Klein is behind the bar.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Penelope Cruz is involved, and I'm sitting here wondering who approved this guest list.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Gilbert K Show.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about the first teaser for Day Drinker, the 2027 thriller directed by Mark Webb.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: When I first heard the title, I pictured someone ordering a second mimosa at brunch and saying it's five o'clock somewhere.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Then I watched the teaser.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: This is the kind of boat trip where the bartender gives you a drink, a life jacket, and a quiet suggestion to call your family while you still have reception.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Here's what we know Madden Klein plays a bartender on a private yacht.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Johnny Depp plays a mysterious guest she meets on board.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: They become tangled up with the criminal figure played by Penope Cruz, and the three are connected in ways the movie hasn't revealed.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Daydrinker is scheduled for the theaters on March 26, 2027.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I like how simple that sounds.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yet I have about 30 questions.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Who is this guest?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Why is he on that particular yacht?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: What does Cruz's character want?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And how much does the bartender know?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Also, who owns the yacht?
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Because whoever it is should probably review their security policy.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The boat is a great setting for this kind of story, a private yacht, sounds like freedom, sunshine, open water.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Somebody bring in you snacks.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: But once the wrong people come aboard, open water becomes a problem.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: If trouble starts in a restaurant, you leave through the front door.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: If trouble starts on a yacht, you run toward the front of the yacht.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: That buys you maybe 12 seconds.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Then what?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Call another yacht?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: The person I'm most interested in and curious about is Madeline Klein's bartender.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Think about her work day.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: She probably arrived expecting to make drinks, smile at people who don't remember her name and count the hours until she gets paid.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Instead, Johnny Depp boards the boat looking like a man who might answer still water or sparkling with a story about revenge.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: I would immediately think this shift is going to run late, but being the bartender might give her an advantage.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: People say things around staff that they would never say around another guest.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: They act as though the person making their drink can't hear them.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I've been around enough events to know how this goes.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Two people lean in and whisper, nobody can know about this.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: While someone is standing 18 inches away holding a tray.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So maybe the bartender noticed something.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: A guest calls somebody by the wrong name.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: One person claims they're never met another but already knows their favorite drink.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Somebody hears Cruz's character is coming and suddenly wants the yacht to turn around.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Those are my guesses.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Not details, the teaser confirms, but that's what makes the setup fun.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The bartender could be the only person watching everybody.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Many viewers know Klein from Outer Banks where she played Sarah Cameron.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Once again, she's near the water.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: This time, I hope her contract includes hazard pay.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Most of all, I hope she gets to be clever.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Give me a bartender who makes choices.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Let her ask the question nobody wants to answer.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Let her work out what's happening before the guests realize she's been listening.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about Johnny Depp's character: the gray hair, the stare, the drink.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: This man looks like he walked onto the yacht carrying three passports, an unresolved grudge.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: He suggests his story might be about revenge.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Then he raises the possibility of something stranger, even a ghost story.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: The film has been described as a supernatural revenge thriller.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Though the teaser keeps the detail to itself, I get why the bartender would be unsettled.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Imagine trying to do your job while a guest talks like the final page of a mystery novel.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Can I get you anything else, sir?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Perhaps the truth?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, one truth.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Is that with Ice?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: The question is whether we should believe anything he says.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Is he warning the bartender?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Trying to scare someone else?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Does he know Cruz's character is coming?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Or is his arrival the reason she comes?
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I want to be careful here, the teaser doesn't give us those answers.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I'm having fun guessing.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: That's what a good teaser should make us do.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And yes, I've seen people talking about Depp's accent online.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: There are lots of guesses about where it's meant to be from.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: I want to add another guess.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I'll say is that his accent sounds like it has collected stamps in several airports.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Does it distract me a little?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Could it work once we understand the character?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Also, yes.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: For now, it has made the teaser hard to ignore.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: When Penope Cruz arrives, the official description calls Penope Cruz's character a criminal figure.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: That's pretty much it tells us about the role in this mess.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: That gives me a few possibilities.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Maybe Depp's guess is running from her.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe the bartender is caught between two people who have been waiting years to settle something.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Or maybe Cruz's character knows the one thing neither of them is ready to hear.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Whatever the answer, I want her to have a plan of her own.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: If she's a threat, let her be a smart one.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: The most fun version of the story has everybody thinking they're one step ahead while the audience slowly realizes they might all be wrong.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: If Penelope Cruz boarded my yacht looking for answers, I start talking.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: What do you know?
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Very little, but I'm willing to learn.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And here's a fun fact Daydrinker is the fourth film Depp and Cruz made together.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: They previously appeared in Blow Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: They've done Pirates on the Water.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Now they're back near the water for it looks like an even worse trip.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Next time somebody gives them a nice film set in a quiet cafe, let them finish their coffee.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Let everyone go home.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So what kind of movie are we getting?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: This is the big thing I'm trying to work out from the teaser.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Are we getting a crime thriller where the old enemies meet on a yacht?
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: A revenge movie with a supernatural twist, a ghost story hiding inside a crime movie.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Any of those could work for me.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: The film needs to decide how it wants us to feel as the mystery opens up.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Because a yacht can be used in two very different ways.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: It can look like a beautiful escape that slowly turns dangerous, or it can feel uncomfortable from the moment we step aboard.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: I like the contrast.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: The setting says holiday, while everybody's face says something terrible happened here.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And there's something funny about how little privacy a yacht might offer.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: You're surrounded by sea, yet you're stuck close to the same people.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: If somebody makes a shocking confession at dinner, you can't suddenly announce that you have to drive home.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I've heard enough.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Please take me back.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: We'll be back at the dock in six hours.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Six hours?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: At that point, you make friends with the bartender and hope she has a plan.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Mark Webb directed 500 Days of Summer and the amazing Spider-Man films.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Now he's directing a story of mysterious guests, crime and possible supernatural trouble.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to see what he does with it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Zach Dean wrote the screenplay.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: His past credits include the others.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Now, that doesn't mean Dade Rinker is John Wick on a hunted yacht.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I've just said those words out loud and I realized I might buy a ticket to that movie.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: What those names do is make me curious about the mix.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: How much action are we getting?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: How creepy will it be?
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Will the movie keep us guessing or will it reveal what's going on and become a fight for survival?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I'm happy with any of those paths if the character give us a reason to care.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: One thing that I appreciate is that don't feel like I've already seen the entire movie.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: You know, those trailers where you can piece together the beginning, the big twist, the final chase, and possibly Who Lives.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: By the time the movie comes out, you're just waiting for scenes you remember from the ad.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: This teaser leaves us plenty of room for guesses.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: We have a setting, we have three people worth watching.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We have the promise that their connection matters, and we have a suggestion that the story could get very strange.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: That's enough to bring me in.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: It also gives us a clear reason to talk about the movie.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Ask 10 people what Depp's character is doing on that boat, and you might get 10 different theories.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Some viewers online sound excited, others are puzzled by the teaser's tone or focused on the accent.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: That's a small sample of reactions, of course.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: It shows how many different conversations the teaser has started, and much rather debate what the movie might be than feel like it's already shown me everything.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So here's what I'm holding back a little.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Mystery is great, but mysterious people need to become interesting people.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: If everybody spends the whole movie speaking in warnings, I'm going to need somebody to sit them down.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: You don't know what I've done, you don't know what she wants, you don't know who is really in danger.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: I have spent two hours with you and somehow no less than when I arrived.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: That's my one concern with this type of teaser.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It can promise secrets without telling us why those secrets matter.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: The next trailer doesn't need to reveal the big twist.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: I just like a stronger sense of what clients' bartender wants.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Does she want to escape, help someone, find out what happened?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Does she have a personal reason to stay aboard?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: If the film gives her a strong part in the story, then a mystery has somebody for us to follow.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And while Depp and Cruz play their dangerous game, we'll have a person on that boat we're truly worried about.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: My theory.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Alright, theory time.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: I think the bartender is connected to the story more deeply than anyone realizes.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: The official description says these characters have an unexpected connection.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: That could mean something is their shared past.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Or it could mean the bartender is about to discover she's been brought onto this yacht for a reason.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Maybe she starts off thinking she's caught between Depp's guest and Cruz's character.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Then she learns that both been keeping something from her.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And suddenly she's the one asking the questions.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Am I right?
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Would I bet money on it?
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I'm a producer, I know how fast money disappears around boats, but I hope she surprises us.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: I hope the film let us think we understand the three characters and changes how we see at least one of them.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: My final verdict I'm interested and I want to see more.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: The yacht is a strong place to set the story because the characters can't easily get away from one another.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: That makes me want to know what his guest is hiding.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Cruz looks set to bring serious trouble, and client's bartender could turn out to be the person holding the whole mystery together.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: The teaser has earned my curiosity.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Now the movie has to earn my investment in these people.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Is this a revenge story, a ghost story, or both?
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Who's telling the truth?
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And most urgently, does anyone on that boat know how to operate the lifeboat?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Did the day drinker, teaser, hook you, do you trust that mysterious guest Penelope Cruise character or the bartender watching them both?
