- 3:47Speaker 1: I feel judged. I'm not judging you. I'm just I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: just stating that you don't know anything. You and this
- 3:54Speaker 1: is before you start being in the third heavens woman
- 3:56Speaker 1: of God like you should know this.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It's okay, I'll teach you like thank you. It's not
- 4:01Speaker 2: a bad song. Okay, it's not a bad song, y'all.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I'm super excited about this, guits, because if y'all been
- 4:08Speaker 1: seeing my social media, I've been bragging and lying. I've
- 4:11Speaker 1: been lying, desiree. I've been saying the Man of God
- 4:14Speaker 1: came from the state of Washington.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But I was close.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I mean, he flew here to Birmingham, Alabama, from Oregon, y'all.
- 4:24Speaker 1: We first of all, let's just talk about how God
- 4:27Speaker 1: is good all the time. Okay, this man flew from Oregon.
- 4:31Speaker 1: We had a conversation. Shout out to Tiago. We had
- 4:34Speaker 1: a conversation. We were linked up, and I just knew
- 4:37Speaker 1: he had to be on this podcast.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Listen.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Not only is he a man of God, y'all, he
- 4:44Speaker 1: is a salary coach.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Y'all.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Were gonna we're gonna go up in some levels week
- 4:48Speaker 1: because we got to have the coin to increase the
- 4:50Speaker 1: kingdom matters. Okay, and so now he's gonna teach us
- 4:53Speaker 1: how to negotiate, well if we get there, because he
- 4:56Speaker 1: gave me. He's given us permission to go where we
- 4:59Speaker 1: need to go and how when.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We need to do it. But Also he's an author.
- 5:02Speaker 1: He has very much so content regarding negotiating your salary,
- 5:06Speaker 1: increasing and knowing your value because some of us don't
- 5:08Speaker 1: understand our value, desert, we don't know, so we got
- 5:12Speaker 1: to know our work.
- 5:12Speaker 2: To get with you. Know what I'm saying.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I introduced to all y'all my new friend, my homie,
- 5:20Speaker 1: mister John Gay.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Is that is that a lot of energy for you, John,
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's gonna be.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I'm I'm here. Uh, this is gonna be super fun.
- 5:35Speaker 5: And I don't care where the conversation goes, whether we
- 5:37Speaker 5: talk about negotiation.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Or faith or mix of those two.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah, it's gonna be a blast and I'm looking forward
- 5:43Speaker 5: to it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
- 5:44Speaker 1: No, John, I'm great. Like you came from Oregon. Okay,
- 5:47Speaker 1: let's just talk about how hard it was. We're gonna
- 5:50Speaker 1: get that that elephant out of the room or bring
- 5:53Speaker 1: it what do you call it?
- 5:54Speaker 2: We don't speak on the elephant in the room. It's
- 5:57Speaker 2: not on the room.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's okay, But I no, like literally, y'all, like three
- 6:03Speaker 1: three different airplanes.
- 6:04Speaker 2: He started last night and saying, hey.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I am I'm delayed a little bit, X, Y and Z,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and it just killed delayed, Kip delayed, kept Ala. So
- 6:12Speaker 1: I'm in high expectation of whatever God is about to
- 6:15Speaker 1: do in this space. And so John, if you don't
- 6:17Speaker 1: mind just giving us a little background, about to tell
- 6:19Speaker 1: us about yourself.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Where are you from?
- 6:21Speaker 5: Oh?
- 6:22Speaker 2: What's your family dynamic?
- 6:23Speaker 1: Like?
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah? So I was born and raised in Oregon.
- 6:26Speaker 5: My ancestors came to Oregon and covered wagons, so hacking
- 6:30Speaker 5: their way through the West.
- 6:32Speaker 3: That was tough.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Most people died on the journey, and so I've lived
- 6:35Speaker 5: there most of my life. That in nineteen ninety eight,
- 6:39Speaker 5: I left to go to work for the Fortune five hundred.
- 6:42Speaker 5: After college, I was a recruiter and started recruiting and
- 6:47Speaker 5: got into that specialty. I did a quick stop, a
- 6:51Speaker 5: quick bit stop. After about five years, had a bit
- 6:54Speaker 5: of an identity crisis, got saved in my mid twenties
- 6:58Speaker 5: and went to seminary for a year. Then I got
- 7:01Speaker 5: back into recruiting and continue the journey. So I left
- 7:04Speaker 5: Oregon in nineteen ninety eight and moved to Richmond, Virginia
- 7:08Speaker 5: to work for Capital one. And then I left Capital
- 7:11Speaker 5: one after the Twin Towers fell, a lot of people
- 7:14Speaker 5: got laid off, including me. By the way, I've been
- 7:18Speaker 5: laid off several times. When you decide to take a
- 7:21Speaker 5: career in recruiting, you're you're out on the skinny branches
- 7:25Speaker 5: of the of the company. As long as the company's growing,
- 7:30Speaker 5: this is the part of the business that is making
- 7:32Speaker 5: the company grow, Right, You're getting people to come on board,
- 7:35Speaker 5: you're convincing them to join. The company's getting bigger when
- 7:38Speaker 5: you're doing your job. So if the company decides, hey,
- 7:41Speaker 5: it's time to get smaller, guess who's the first out
- 7:44Speaker 5: of the door.
- 7:45Speaker 2: The people.
- 7:47Speaker 5: That makes recruiting, learning and development. You know, these things
- 7:51Speaker 5: that aren't keep the lights on functions or usually the
- 7:54Speaker 5: ones that could hit the hardest. So I've been laid
- 7:57Speaker 5: off four times in my career. I know what that
- 7:59Speaker 5: feels like. It's terrifying, yeah, because the income engine is
- 8:04Speaker 5: gone all of a sudden, And when people are in
- 8:07Speaker 5: that spot, they do the math in their head and
- 8:09Speaker 5: they know the month down the road when they can't
- 8:13Speaker 5: pay the rent. They know they've got four months or
- 8:16Speaker 5: six months or two weeks or whatever before they can't
- 8:19Speaker 5: pay the rent, and the pressure's on to get something else.
- 8:23Speaker 5: So throughout my career, I've relocated for career advancement. I
- 8:27Speaker 5: ended up becoming the head of global recruiting for multiple
- 8:31Speaker 5: Fortune five hundred companies. But along the way, I lived here.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Let's see, I lived in Richmond, then I moved to Birmingham, Alabama.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I was here for seven years.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Five of those years was working for Drummond Company, which
- 8:48Speaker 5: is a coal mining company headquartered here, and I was
- 8:51Speaker 5: in and out of South America, often working there because
- 8:54Speaker 5: they had mines down there as well. Started my own
- 8:58Speaker 5: recruiting business for a couple of years years. Then I
- 9:01Speaker 5: went up to work for a defense company in Indiana
- 9:05Speaker 5: and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Then I went from there to
- 9:10Speaker 5: Saint Louis, lived there for four years, then a couple
- 9:13Speaker 5: of years in Houston, Texas, is the head of recruiting
- 9:15Speaker 5: for Marathon Oil, and then back to Oregon. So I
- 9:19Speaker 5: have aging parents. My mother's now eighty seven. My dad
- 9:23Speaker 5: passed away a couple of years ago. So that's that's
- 9:27Speaker 5: kind of the professional journey. Yeah, you know, personal and
- 9:32Speaker 5: spiritual journeys a little different. Mentioned earlier that I was
- 9:38Speaker 5: raised in kind of a New Age home agnostic slash
- 9:42Speaker 5: New Age and my parents divorced when I was ten.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Oh wow, it was one of those you know sometimes
- 9:50Speaker 5: when when your parents get divorced and go to live
- 9:53Speaker 5: with one parent. My dad and he couldn't boil water
- 9:57Speaker 5: without burning it.
- 9:59Speaker 3: He couldn't cook at all.
- 10:01Speaker 5: So I had to learn how to cook at a
- 10:02Speaker 5: young age and take care of myself because he was
- 10:05Speaker 5: always either off with girlfriends or was at work. He
- 10:10Speaker 5: used to pay my brother and I had to babysit ourselves.
- 10:13Speaker 5: He said, if I come back home and nothing's broken,
- 10:17Speaker 5: I'm gonna give you each a dollar.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And that was a lot of money when I was
- 10:20Speaker 3: so we were well behaved.
- 10:23Speaker 5: So I could have been one of these kids that
- 10:25Speaker 5: gotten into deep trouble and you know, off the you know,
- 10:29Speaker 5: off the path. I ended up being on the opposite side,
- 10:33Speaker 5: very very responsible, maybe too responsible at times.
- 10:39Speaker 2: What do you mean by too responsible?
- 10:41Speaker 5: I didn't go on many adventures. It was always very
- 10:46Speaker 5: self restrained. I was always worried about my future and
- 10:50Speaker 5: I didn't want to do anything today that would impact
- 10:52Speaker 5: my future.
- 10:53Speaker 3: No, no, that's not a bad thing.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Yeah, but you can be so so rained in that
- 11:00Speaker 5: you don't, you know, let God move you, yeah, to
- 11:03Speaker 5: different places. So that growing up in the New Age
- 11:08Speaker 5: family was kind of interesting. You know what I mean
- 11:11Speaker 5: by that is my my father believed in past life regression,
- 11:15Speaker 5: so he thought he could hypnotize me and take me
- 11:17Speaker 5: back to past life.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Wait, hold up, hold up, wait, So we okay, since
- 11:24Speaker 1: we're going there, can you explain the New Age because
- 11:28Speaker 1: I know that's a thing now, like on TikTok and
- 11:30Speaker 1: all stuff like that.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I didn't even know this was.
- 11:34Speaker 1: This was a thing before, like seeing it on social
- 11:38Speaker 1: media lot, and they some people mix the two, like
- 11:41Speaker 1: Christianity new Age meditation think you can just pull on
- 11:46Speaker 1: that universe. And we talked about that earlier. Now, so
- 11:49Speaker 1: can you explain New Age? And then we got to
- 11:51Speaker 1: get into this hypno thing with your dad because what yeah?
- 11:56Speaker 5: Yeah, So New Age movement is is kind of a
- 11:58Speaker 5: combination of things things. It's very popular in the United States,
- 12:05Speaker 5: and it's a combination of Hinduism and Buddhism and some
- 12:09Speaker 5: other Eastern religions mixed together. So the concept of reincarnation,
- 12:14Speaker 5: for example, is part of the New Age philosophy. This
- 12:20Speaker 5: includes the idea that when you die, you come back
- 12:24Speaker 5: as another person, so you have past lives. So my
- 12:29Speaker 5: father believed this and thought he could hypnotize me and
- 12:32Speaker 5: others so that we could regress and understand who our
- 12:37Speaker 5: past lives were. And the belief there is that are
- 12:43Speaker 5: our personalities and how we react to people and things
- 12:47Speaker 5: like that are sometimes tied to past lives. Maybe we
- 12:52Speaker 5: love someone and we're attracted to them because we were
- 12:54Speaker 5: married in a past life. This is the sort of
- 12:58Speaker 5: idea and this is bar from Hinduism. Hinduism believes in
- 13:03Speaker 5: reincarnation and they also believe in karma, so the concept
- 13:07Speaker 5: of karma is interesting. Karma is the idea that what
- 13:14Speaker 5: you do in this life will determine how you emerge
- 13:19Speaker 5: in the next life. So if you are a very
- 13:23Speaker 5: good person in this life, then you'll come back in
- 13:26Speaker 5: an advantaged situation in the next life. If you have leprosy,
- 13:31Speaker 5: it means in a past life you are awful and
- 13:35Speaker 5: you're being punished by the universe. The mechanism that reincarnates
- 13:39Speaker 5: you uses karma to decide if you're going to if
- 13:43Speaker 5: you're going to do that, and that's why it's so
- 13:45Speaker 5: difficult in some Hindu societies. And I don't want to
- 13:48Speaker 5: bash them because they're amazing children of God as well. Yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 5: but there are cultural elements in Hindu countries where if
- 13:57Speaker 5: you help somebody who is hurting, that means you're interrupting
- 14:02Speaker 5: the judgment and the justice of the universe, and it's
- 14:06Speaker 5: bad karma to do that, so.
- 14:09Speaker 3: You gotta be careful.
- 14:11Speaker 5: And that's why poverty persists in some of those places.
- 14:16Speaker 5: If you're born poor, it's because you were a bad
- 14:18Speaker 5: person before, the universe is punishing you. And if I
- 14:22Speaker 5: help you out of poverty, now bad karma for me.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I might not be so great in the next life.
- 14:33Speaker 5: So these are sort of ideas, and that's just something
- 14:37Speaker 5: that is borrowed in the New Age movement for Hinduism,
- 14:41Speaker 5: and it extends into other things that are similar to
- 14:44Speaker 5: witchcraft and things like this. So you've got the healing
- 14:48Speaker 5: power of crystals, you have the energy of pyramid that's
- 14:53Speaker 5: oriented to the north.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Things like that. My father used to sleep under.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Under a brass pyramid over his bed that was oriented
- 15:03Speaker 5: to the north because he thought that that would bring
- 15:06Speaker 5: good energy to him. And my dad was an interesting man.
- 15:10Speaker 5: He was kind of a spiritual adventurer, that's how I
- 15:14Speaker 5: would describe him.
- 15:16Speaker 2: So he didn't just do the New Age thing.
- 15:18Speaker 5: He kind of wandered around. It was almost like a
- 15:20Speaker 5: buffet to him. He couldn't quite find the truth in
- 15:24Speaker 5: any particular place. And the New Age movement is something
- 15:29Speaker 5: that he was deeply in when I was maybe ten
- 15:33Speaker 5: to eighteen years old, and psychic healing is part of
- 15:38Speaker 5: that as well. Yeah. I remember suffering an injury in
- 15:42Speaker 5: baseball and my legs, my back is kind of messed
- 15:45Speaker 5: up and my legs were different links. And he brought
- 15:50Speaker 5: out a pendulum, which is like a ring that he
- 15:54Speaker 5: wore on the end of a string, and he was
- 15:56Speaker 5: looking for energy patterns that he could manipulate to heal
- 16:01Speaker 5: the injury that I had.
- 16:04Speaker 1: So did he consider himself like a leader in the
- 16:07Speaker 1: New Age or he was just heavily practicing.
- 16:09Speaker 5: I think he considered himself maybe to be a learner
- 16:12Speaker 5: and a disciple, somebody who was trying to find truth
- 16:16Speaker 5: in the world. And you know, as as I got older,
- 16:20Speaker 5: I tried to talk to him more about God and
- 16:22Speaker 5: he was on with that too, But I don't think
- 16:25Speaker 5: he ever really understood how these things are mutually exclusive.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what I mean by that is.
- 16:34Speaker 5: You are going to be reincarnated or you're going to
- 16:40Speaker 5: be born, die and go to eternity those two things.
- 16:44Speaker 3: You can't do both of those.
- 16:46Speaker 5: Things, right, right, he has to be one or the
- 16:48Speaker 5: other or something else. And somehow in his mind he
- 16:51Speaker 5: thought it.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Could be both. Maybe. So that was kind of interesting.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And eventually I came to the Lord and I was
- 17:01Speaker 3: in my mid twenties.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yeah, let's I was just about to ask you, like,
- 17:03Speaker 1: how did that experience of the New Age growing up?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Because that's eight years, that's.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Eight full years, and those are some pinnacle like that
- 17:14Speaker 1: is a really sensitive adolescence is a sensitive area and
- 17:20Speaker 1: that's where you really kind of can remember and retain
- 17:23Speaker 1: and develop spiritually, emotionally, physically, like you go through all
- 17:28Speaker 1: those stages. So how did that impact your decision to
- 17:34Speaker 1: be a disciple of Christ?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Now, Well, it was strange, Like.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I don't think it really stuck to me, and I
- 17:42Speaker 5: think it does stick to a lot of people, like Barnacles,
- 17:46Speaker 5: It didn't stick to me very much. I grew up
- 17:51Speaker 5: not really knowing what I believed. That was an agnostic
- 17:54Speaker 5: in other words, I just didn't didn't know what was true,
- 17:58Speaker 5: didn't care about what was true. I avoided political discussions,
- 18:02Speaker 5: I avoided religious discussions just because I.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Didn't know what was true.
- 18:07Speaker 5: And the instigation for me to figure out what was
- 18:12Speaker 5: true was someone invited me to a church service. It
- 18:16Speaker 5: was a Baptist church service, and the pastor there was
- 18:21Speaker 5: preaching on evolution and creation that day, and he was
- 18:27Speaker 5: making fun of people who.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Believed in evolution. And I went home mad. I don't
- 18:34Speaker 3: get mad easy, Yeah, you don't seem like you.
- 18:37Speaker 5: I thought he was making fun of me. He was
- 18:41Speaker 5: belittling people who believed in evolution. And I was mad
- 18:46Speaker 5: for about two weeks and I couldn't figure out why.
- 18:49Speaker 5: And then I woke up once and I realized why.
- 18:52Speaker 5: It was because I was My hypocrisy had been exposed.
- 18:57Speaker 5: He exposed my hypocrisy. Let me tell you why I
- 19:00Speaker 5: felt that way. I had, at times in my teenage
- 19:08Speaker 5: years and in my early twenties arrogantly made fun of
- 19:13Speaker 5: Christians who believed in creation, that God just created something, Well,
- 19:19Speaker 5: why because the Bible says so, because this storybook says so. Well,
- 19:23Speaker 5: that's kind of dumb to believe that, And I would
- 19:25Speaker 5: make fun of them for taking something like that just
- 19:27Speaker 5: because somebody said so. What I realized after his presentation
- 19:33Speaker 5: is that I had believed evolution just because somebody said, so.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I just got cheese, I just got oh, John.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Most of the world is like this.
- 19:50Speaker 5: It's the default setting in our culture because we watched
- 19:53Speaker 5: Star Trek and there's all these aliens and they all
- 19:56Speaker 5: kind of look like us, but they don't. And it
- 19:58Speaker 5: romanticized is the idea of evolution, life coming and changing,
- 20:04Speaker 5: and the idea that there's millions and millions of societies
- 20:10Speaker 5: and civilizations out there in the stars somewhere. It's an
- 20:13Speaker 5: attractive thought. It's a fantasy that appeals to people's imagination.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Certainly did appeal to mine, and I just believed it
- 20:26Speaker 5: because somebody said it was true. It kind of made sense. Maybe,
- 20:30Speaker 5: you know, it seems logical that you could start off
- 20:34Speaker 5: with this cell and then it would change over time,
- 20:36Speaker 5: and you know, it just made sense to me. I
- 20:41Speaker 5: didn't know it was true at that point, but I
- 20:44Speaker 5: left that anger wanting to know what was true, and
- 20:48Speaker 5: understanding too that there was a truth, kind of like
- 20:52Speaker 5: the you know, the difference between reincarnation and and being
- 21:01Speaker 5: being saved and then going to heaven those are two
- 21:06Speaker 5: mutually exclusive sort of ideas. And I started thinking, well,
- 21:09Speaker 5: all right, there is a truth to the origin of life.
- 21:13Speaker 5: I just didn't know what it was, but I was
- 21:15Speaker 5: going to find it. I was going to find it.
- 21:17Speaker 5: So I spent the next two years reading every book
- 21:20Speaker 5: I could get from evolutionists, creationists, people that wrote deeply
- 21:25Speaker 5: and argued about this. And I left that process understanding
- 21:31Speaker 5: that it takes a lot more faith, a lot more
- 21:34Speaker 5: faith to believe in evolution than to believe in creation.
- 21:38Speaker 5: There's a lot of evidence that supports that an intelligent,
- 21:45Speaker 5: an intelligence of some kind, began life. There are big
- 21:52Speaker 5: holes in the theory of evolution that most people don't
- 21:55Speaker 5: know about, and they don't study and they don't think about.
- 21:59Speaker 5: And so I came away from that with the conclusion that, well,
- 22:04Speaker 5: it seems much more likely that we were created than
- 22:08Speaker 5: we evolved. And then I started asking myself, well, okay,
- 22:11Speaker 5: if we were created, what created us? Who created us?
- 22:15Speaker 3: Is it a who is it a? What? What is it?
- 22:17Speaker 3: Is it aliens from some other dimension? Is God?
- 22:21Speaker 5: Is it something else? And that then I started studying
- 22:26Speaker 5: the religions of the world, and I looked at the
- 22:31Speaker 5: truth claims of all of them. That's weirdly how I
- 22:36Speaker 5: came to be a Christian, Because I thought the end
- 22:40Speaker 5: of all that study, the truth claims of Christianity are
- 22:44Speaker 5: much more supportable and stronger than the truth claims.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Of other things, like, for example, like the you.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Know, the ancient religions of the world you have, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 5: the Greek gods.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And the Roman gods. We know because we've been in space.
- 22:59Speaker 5: We know there's not some big dude named Atlas holding
- 23:02Speaker 5: up the world because we've been there and we've seen it.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So every religion has its truth claims. It claims that
- 23:12Speaker 5: this is true. And the truth claims of Christianity is
- 23:16Speaker 5: that Jesus is the son of God, that he was
- 23:20Speaker 5: born of a virgin, that he died and rose again.
- 23:25Speaker 5: And it was the resurrection that really hooked me, like
- 23:29Speaker 5: I just couldn't shake it. Well, he died and rose
- 23:34Speaker 5: again in front of hundreds of you know, he appeared
- 23:37Speaker 5: in front of hundreds of witnesses. He was killed in
- 23:40Speaker 5: front of hundreds of witnesses. The apostles that came to
- 23:49Speaker 5: spread the word of the resurrection, most of them died
- 23:53Speaker 5: very violent deaths, like they were cruise fight upside down
- 23:57Speaker 5: and beaten. They were stoned, they were and they were
- 24:01Speaker 5: they were killed like that because they were saying, Jesus
- 24:04Speaker 5: is God and he rose from the dead.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Now, if they didn't.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Believe it, do you think they would have gone to
- 24:11Speaker 5: their death saying that?
- 24:13Speaker 3: And so it was the historical.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Validation that I found in the Bible and the stories
- 24:24Speaker 5: that they didn't they weren't. They aren't just stories. Like,
- 24:27Speaker 5: there's there's.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Solid stuff backing this up.
- 24:33Speaker 5: There's science that backs up the creation portion of the
- 24:37Speaker 5: story of the Bible. All that the Biblical stories are
- 24:42Speaker 5: proven through archaeology. You compare that to other other faiths
- 24:49Speaker 5: that claim a claim history that's not proven in archaeology.
- 24:54Speaker 5: It's it's hard to know if that claim is true. Yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 5: so I got I actually got up here a belief
- 25:04Speaker 5: way before it came in.
- 25:06Speaker 1: That's and that's what I'm and that's what I'm hearing.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Like while you were talking, my dad has this saying,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I'm a preacher's kid. So I've been in the church,
- 25:14Speaker 1: but what ironically, like, I was in church but didn't
- 25:18Speaker 1: have a relationship with God. So that that's a whole
- 25:21Speaker 1: dialogue within itself. But before he preaches, he he has
- 25:24Speaker 1: this saying and at the end of the saying, he says,
- 25:27Speaker 1: I will study to show myself approved. And as you
- 25:30Speaker 1: were talking, that's all I could understand and I love
- 25:34Speaker 1: Maybe you can speak to this idea because you are
- 25:37Speaker 1: You are well like groomed man like just mentally, physically,
- 25:41Speaker 1: emotionally like you just look good. Your energy is just wonderful,
- 25:45Speaker 1: and so like the.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Idea of.
- 25:50Speaker 1: People going beyond to learn to educate themselves about different religions.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna speak from a Christian standpoint, can be intimidating
- 25:59Speaker 1: or fearful. Why do you think that we fear learning
- 26:02Speaker 1: beyond our own our own.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Belief I think it's likely that we're not truly confident
- 26:11Speaker 5: in what we believe, and maybe we're a little bit
- 26:13Speaker 5: scared that we'll discover that what we believe is wrong.
- 26:18Speaker 5: People are comfortable in their lives, you know. They they
- 26:20Speaker 5: don't want to change, they don't want to be transformed.
- 26:27Speaker 5: It's we build a feathered nest for ourselves and we
- 26:30Speaker 5: don't want to disrupt that too much. Most people are
- 26:33Speaker 5: like that. I am absolutely not like that. Like I
- 26:37Speaker 5: push myself to the point of discomfort to find the
- 26:40Speaker 5: truth of things and to explore things that are different
- 26:44Speaker 5: and interesting.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Like my father, I'm an adventurer. I like that about me.
- 26:51Speaker 3: But when I lived here in the South, Christianity is
- 26:56Speaker 3: different when.
- 26:56Speaker 5: You go from places to places. Yeah, it was different
- 26:59Speaker 5: when I was in Philippines. It's different here. And if
- 27:05Speaker 5: I have a criticism of Christianity in the South is
- 27:11Speaker 5: it's that Christianity here is often cultural Christianity. And that's
- 27:16Speaker 5: what I guess how I would describe it. People born
- 27:19Speaker 5: and raised here. It's a traditional kind of thing to do,
- 27:24Speaker 5: to go to church with your family, to be part
- 27:26Speaker 5: of the you know, to hear the words, to kind
- 27:30Speaker 5: of start parroting the words, to understanding those things.
- 27:34Speaker 3: But to be.
- 27:37Speaker 5: I think that gets in the way of a personal
- 27:39Speaker 5: relationship and a transformation because you think you're already saved.
- 27:46Speaker 3: When maybe you're not.
- 27:48Speaker 5: When I'm teaching in human resources, one of the first
- 27:51Speaker 5: things I say when I'm teaching a class, the biggest
- 27:54Speaker 5: enemy of learning is to think you already know it.
- 27:58Speaker 5: If you go into a class and you think, ah,
- 28:00Speaker 5: I think I already know this stuff, your mind is
- 28:03Speaker 5: completely closed.
- 28:04Speaker 3: You're never gonna learn anything new.
- 28:09Speaker 1: John, Okay, I just heard the Lord say, John came
- 28:19Speaker 1: down here. Because of the religious mindset in this territory.
- 28:26Speaker 2: That's why he was thoughts already here.
- 28:28Speaker 1: That's because it's a principality, this region, this territory is religious.
- 28:38Speaker 1: That's the principality and the reason why I told you.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I grew up in the South, like I told you,
- 28:44Speaker 1: and I didn't learn relationship until I got around my
- 28:49Speaker 1: twenties too, And until I started learning relationship, I thought
- 28:54Speaker 1: everything was okay to do, because if we're honest, we're
- 28:57Speaker 1: just like the New Age. We're no different from New
- 29:00Speaker 1: Age people when we practice things that are outside of
- 29:03Speaker 1: the will of the Lord. And basically what you're saying
- 29:07Speaker 1: is we we You could pick pinning it out because
- 29:11Speaker 1: you were in a different religion. So it's like having
- 29:14Speaker 1: saying I'm a Christian, but you have your own religion
- 29:16Speaker 1: in Christianity. M hm, you John, you're John.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I promise you.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I want to flip this table, but I'm trying to
- 29:24Speaker 1: be as poised as you right now.
- 29:27Speaker 2: So I can only.
- 29:30Speaker 3: We need that energy.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that you do that, that you flip
- 29:36Speaker 5: the table right over.
- 29:37Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 29:38Speaker 1: You should do more of the Wait, y'all, just flip
- 29:42Speaker 1: the table.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Just flip the table.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna make sure they see that part of recording.
- 29:46Speaker 1: What I what I can't ignore, John, is that your
- 29:49Speaker 1: posture and your your investigative spirit, Like that's that he
- 29:53Speaker 1: went through a whole investigative process.
- 29:56Speaker 2: He said two years.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah, what is the last time you studied something for
- 30:03Speaker 1: two years? To make sure you have clarity? And then
- 30:08Speaker 1: the thing he called all of us out. I'm sorry,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I gotta repeat what you said. He called all of
- 30:12Speaker 1: us out? The great Did you hear him say that
- 30:14Speaker 1: the reason why we fear to research and investigate other
- 30:19Speaker 1: religions is because.
- 30:21Speaker 2: We are really not secure in our own So do
- 30:26Speaker 2: we have faith? What is faith?
- 30:29Speaker 1: Then? Is what is the security in God? And it's
- 30:32Speaker 1: like the development of the relationship. So he said, my
- 30:35Speaker 1: my process started here before it reached here.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Like that's you're blowing my mind.
- 30:41Speaker 1: So I even I even think that that's why God
- 30:44Speaker 1: gave you the authority? And where like these five five
- 30:48Speaker 1: was it fortune five hundred? My God is a tone twister,
- 30:52Speaker 1: fortune five hundred companies?
- 30:54Speaker 2: So you said you start? Did you start at Capitol one?
- 30:59Speaker 6: No?
- 30:59Speaker 5: I started that is a temporary service employee. When I
- 31:04Speaker 5: graduated from college, I had two degrees, one in finance,
- 31:07Speaker 5: and one in business management, and I wanted to be
- 31:10Speaker 5: a financial analyst. That's what I wanted to be, and
- 31:14Speaker 5: that's what I was preparing for. And I actually got
- 31:16Speaker 5: a job as a financial analyst working for a tech
- 31:19Speaker 5: company in Portland, Oregon, right out of college. And three
- 31:23Speaker 5: weeks before I was supposed to start, they said, we're
- 31:27Speaker 5: resending all the offers because we've had a bad quarter.
- 31:30Speaker 3: So the offer was pulled away.
- 31:33Speaker 5: I had a newborn son at the time had to
- 31:35Speaker 5: find something, and so I networked like crazy and I
- 31:39Speaker 5: ended up finding this job working for a temporary agency.
- 31:43Speaker 5: They hired me to be a recruiter because I had
- 31:45Speaker 5: a degree, I could speak Spanish, and I looked good
- 31:48Speaker 5: in a suit.
- 31:50Speaker 3: That was it.
- 31:52Speaker 5: And they wanted to put me out in Hillsboro, Oregon,
- 31:55Speaker 5: which at the time was a fairly Hispanic suburb of Portland.
- 32:00Speaker 3: It was on the fringe.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Portland's grown quite a bit since then, but we used
- 32:05Speaker 5: to joke around and call it hills Burrito. It was
- 32:08Speaker 5: so Hispanic. And so my job was to translate all
- 32:12Speaker 5: the application materials in the testing and to interview people
- 32:16Speaker 5: who didn't speak English.
- 32:17Speaker 3: And then send them out on jobs. And I discovered
- 32:20Speaker 3: that I was really good at this. I was really
- 32:23Speaker 3: good at it.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I had no idea I was going to be good
- 32:25Speaker 5: at it, but I ended up essentially starving to death
- 32:30Speaker 5: for five years in that industry. My first salary out
- 32:34Speaker 5: of college was sixteen thousand dollars a year. Oh wow,
- 32:37Speaker 5: that's what I made coming out of college. And eventually
- 32:42Speaker 5: I started working for one of my clients. In fact,
- 32:45Speaker 5: it was the same tech company that didn't hire me
- 32:48Speaker 5: years ago. They hired me as a technical recruiter and
- 32:52Speaker 5: finally started to have enough money, more money than month.
- 32:57Speaker 5: They say, you know your trouble in trouble if you've got.
- 33:02Speaker 2: More month month than Yeah, I know about it.
- 33:05Speaker 5: So I know what it's like to financially struggle. And
- 33:09Speaker 5: it's kind of how I got into the negotiation idea.
- 33:13Speaker 5: I started tracking as a recruiter how much money people
- 33:17Speaker 5: were leaving on the table. So and I did this
- 33:20Speaker 5: for self defense because I've been laid off a couple
- 33:23Speaker 5: of times already, and I thought, well, maybe they won't
- 33:26Speaker 5: lay me off if they see that I'm making money
- 33:28Speaker 5: for the company. So I started like I would get
- 33:31Speaker 5: offers approved for people. Maybe the offer would be approved
- 33:35Speaker 5: at eighty five thousand with a ten thousand signing bonus
- 33:39Speaker 5: if I needed it, and I could close at seventy
- 33:42Speaker 5: five with not using the signing bonus, then I would
- 33:44Speaker 5: write down on a spreadsheet that I just saved ten
- 33:47Speaker 5: thousand in salary and the ten thousand dollars signing bonus,
- 33:51Speaker 5: and I started setting goals to cover my annual salary
- 33:57Speaker 5: every month just in salary negotiations savings. So it was
- 34:01Speaker 5: during that time that I really realized how much money
- 34:06Speaker 5: the average person's leaving on the table and they don't
- 34:09Speaker 5: even know they're doing it. Yeah, companies are willing to
- 34:12Speaker 5: give you this money, you just don't ask for it.
- 34:15Speaker 5: Eighty plus percent of the people that I extend job
- 34:18Speaker 5: offers to don't negotiate at all.
- 34:21Speaker 3: They don't know how.
- 34:23Speaker 5: They're afraid to negotiate because they're afraid of losing the
- 34:26Speaker 5: offer or losing the chance to interview or something like that.
- 34:31Speaker 5: And it's understandable too, because most people might change jobs
- 34:34Speaker 5: five eight times maybe in their lifetime. Yeah, so they're
- 34:38Speaker 5: going to be a beginner always at negotiating their pay,
- 34:43Speaker 5: and they're lining up against somebody like me who's extending
- 34:46Speaker 5: five eight jobs a week, and so it's tough and
- 34:54Speaker 5: it's intimidating, but it's very, very possible. And that's I
- 34:57Speaker 5: guess why I decided to launch the salary coach business.
- 35:00Speaker 5: I wanted to become the you know, I was the
- 35:03Speaker 5: prosecuting attorney who has become the defense attorney.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm on your side of the table.
- 35:09Speaker 5: I teach people how to negotiate their pay, so then
- 35:12Speaker 5: get all that money that's on the table without putting
- 35:15Speaker 5: the job offer at risk.
- 35:16Speaker 2: That's so good.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I want to get into the idea because while I
- 35:19Speaker 1: was reading your bio, you strongly suggest people before you
- 35:24Speaker 1: can negotiate, you gotta know your worth.
- 35:25Speaker 2: What does that look like?
- 35:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it's tough because some of the some of the
- 35:31Speaker 5: common advice that people see when they start googling salary
- 35:36Speaker 5: negotiation is people saying you need to know your worth
- 35:40Speaker 5: and you need to stand up for yourself and insist
- 35:43Speaker 5: upon what you're worth. And I think that's actually bad advice.
- 35:47Speaker 5: It's bad advice because it creates a confrontation in the process,
- 35:52Speaker 5: and I think most people feel like negotiation is.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Is not a collaboration, it's a conflict.
- 36:03Speaker 5: I am coming at you insisting and it's a battle,
- 36:09Speaker 5: like you're putting on armor, marching into an arena and
- 36:13Speaker 5: you're going to duel to the death with somebody. That's
- 36:16Speaker 5: what most people think it is. And if that's what
- 36:18Speaker 5: you think it is, of course you're not going to
- 36:20Speaker 5: be interested. Most people don't want to do that, especially
- 36:23Speaker 5: if they're a beginning fighter and going against a black belt.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no, want.
- 36:29Speaker 3: To do that, right, So it's I think you need.
- 36:35Speaker 5: To understand what you're worth, but then go through a
- 36:38Speaker 5: collaboration process and that's how I keep the risk low
- 36:42Speaker 5: for my clients. So salary surveys are one way that
- 36:46Speaker 5: you can discover what you're worth, but it's not usually
- 36:49Speaker 5: very reliable information.
- 36:51Speaker 2: What's a salary survey?
- 36:53Speaker 3: You can go to.
- 36:53Speaker 5: A website like salary dot com or payscale dot com
- 36:57Speaker 5: and you can put in your job description and how
- 36:59Speaker 5: many year of experience you have and where you live,
- 37:02Speaker 5: and it will give you an approximation of what your
- 37:05Speaker 5: pay should be, what your market value is whatever.
- 37:09Speaker 3: But the problem with all that is you don't know
- 37:11Speaker 3: how old that information is, whether it was.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Gathered from different industries or every company has their different
- 37:20Speaker 5: assessment of value and even their different pay package. What
- 37:24Speaker 5: you might see on the screen could be salary only
- 37:27Speaker 5: or could have.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Incentives mixed in. Stuff like that. So it's just not
- 37:31Speaker 3: very great information.
- 37:33Speaker 5: You get some information too from Glassdoor, but that's also unreliable.
- 37:38Speaker 3: That's a site where people.
- 37:39Speaker 5: Go and they can write about what it was like
- 37:42Speaker 5: working at a company, what it was like interviewing in
- 37:45Speaker 5: a company, and how much they made, but you don't
- 37:47Speaker 5: know if any of that's true.
- 37:50Speaker 2: That's so good.
- 37:51Speaker 1: What's coming up right now is that I know we're
- 37:54Speaker 1: talking about salary and we have the opportunity to negotiate,
- 38:00Speaker 1: but what about is there a hard difference on our
- 38:04Speaker 1: negotiating hourly wages? Like how should people navigate it?
- 38:09Speaker 5: Yeah, if you're paid by the hour, it's more difficult
- 38:12Speaker 5: to negotiate because there tends to be much narrower range.
- 38:19Speaker 5: A lot of times companies that are paid by the
- 38:21Speaker 5: hour will say, well, if you have eight years of experience,
- 38:24Speaker 5: you're gonna get this much, and if you have ten years,
- 38:26Speaker 5: it's going to be that much. It tends to be
- 38:28Speaker 5: much more of a formula. And the reason why is
- 38:32Speaker 5: hourly employees sometimes are there's a bunch of them. You
- 38:37Speaker 5: go to a manufacturing company and sixty eighty percent of
- 38:41Speaker 5: the employees might be hourly. So now you've got a
- 38:44Speaker 5: bunch of people stacked up against each other they talk
- 38:47Speaker 5: about how much they make. It creates problems for the
- 38:49Speaker 5: company if it's not objective. So, and by objective I
- 38:56Speaker 5: mean years of experience. You can count that, yeah you can,
- 39:00Speaker 5: but you can't count as easily how great you are
- 39:04Speaker 5: at doing your job.
- 39:05Speaker 3: You know, stuff like this.
- 39:07Speaker 5: On the salaried side, you have more freedom to negotiate
- 39:10Speaker 5: because there are fewer people to compare against. It's there's
- 39:16Speaker 5: also a lot more subjectivity in terms of how you
- 39:19Speaker 5: are performing because there's a lot more relationship and communication
- 39:24Speaker 5: and things like that that can separate. It's very possible
- 39:28Speaker 5: that somebody with five years of experience can be way
- 39:30Speaker 5: better than somebody who has fifteen years of experience. And
- 39:34Speaker 5: you can get around that a little easier on the
- 39:38Speaker 5: salaried end. But I'd say the best, the most reliable
- 39:42Speaker 5: way to know what you're worth is to have conversations
- 39:45Speaker 5: with companies. And you apply to a job that you're
- 39:48Speaker 5: qualified for. Your phone rings all right, they responded to
- 39:53Speaker 5: your application. It means that they see you as a
- 39:57Speaker 5: fit initially, so they're calling you, and when they call you,
- 40:02Speaker 5: you can simply ask them what's your budget for the position,
- 40:06Speaker 5: and that will give you a good data.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Point about what you're worth.
- 40:10Speaker 5: And you do this three or four times with three
- 40:12Speaker 5: or four different companies, and you have a pretty good idea.
- 40:14Speaker 5: It's going to be a range, but it's a much
- 40:18Speaker 5: stronger data point and it has the bonus of nobody
- 40:21Speaker 5: can really argue with what other companies are telling you.
- 40:25Speaker 5: So when one of the things that really trips people
- 40:30Speaker 5: up when they're in the recruiting process like this is
- 40:34Speaker 5: the phone rings and somebody like me will say, Jess,
- 40:39Speaker 5: what's your salary requirement? I need to know before we
- 40:42Speaker 5: go any further. And you know that that's a screen
- 40:47Speaker 5: out question and if you answer it wrong, you'll never
- 40:49Speaker 5: get the chance to interview with the hiring manager or
- 40:53Speaker 5: the team that you might be working with. So the
- 40:57Speaker 5: tendency here is to give a low number because you
- 41:00Speaker 5: you want to interview. The risk here is that that
- 41:05Speaker 5: recruiter or the HR person that you're talking to on
- 41:08Speaker 5: the phone or in a zoom call now they think
- 41:10Speaker 5: they can get you for that number. You just gave
- 41:12Speaker 5: and it's really hard to move up. But when they
- 41:16Speaker 5: ask you that question, like when they say, Jess, what's
- 41:19Speaker 5: your salary requirement, you can say, well, I'd love to
- 41:22Speaker 5: give you that information. I believe in being transparent and
- 41:25Speaker 5: want to have a conversation with you, But first, can
- 41:28Speaker 5: you tell me what your range is for this position?
- 41:31Speaker 3: What's your budget for the job.
- 41:34Speaker 5: And when you ask that question, you need to be
- 41:37Speaker 5: very quiet for about eight seconds because if we were
- 41:42Speaker 5: quiet for eight seconds here, it will get uncomfortable. And
- 41:46Speaker 5: we tend to fill in that volt, you know, that
- 41:49Speaker 5: vacuum with our voice, and they will do that too.
- 41:53Speaker 5: They'll tell you something. They might say, well, we haven't
- 41:56Speaker 5: figured it out yet, or they might say, well, our
- 41:59Speaker 5: range is most likely going to be between this and that,
- 42:03Speaker 5: And then that gives you a data point and you
- 42:06Speaker 5: pile those things up through a job search, and now
- 42:10Speaker 5: you're starting to get a feel for what the market
- 42:12Speaker 5: is for you and your skills, the stuff that you're
- 42:15Speaker 5: really qualified to do.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Yeah, so does that help?
- 42:19Speaker 1: No, that I'm over here trying not to flip the table, John,
- 42:23Speaker 1: Like I'm just I hear so like this is so
- 42:26Speaker 1: needed for the Kingdom. John I'm gonna tell you why,
- 42:28Speaker 1: because we really limit ourselves and our resources because we're
- 42:35Speaker 1: fearful of the negotiation process. Like I would have never
- 42:39Speaker 1: imagined that the negotiations process started prior to them offering
- 42:44Speaker 1: me the position. That's what I just heard you say, Like,
- 42:47Speaker 1: it doesn't start when they offered me the position, because
- 42:51Speaker 1: obviously they were interested too. Like we really treated like
- 42:53Speaker 1: a one sided situation. And I think you can speak
- 42:57Speaker 1: to that a little bit, like what you've seen as
- 42:59Speaker 1: far as being the prosecute inside instead of aside, Like
- 43:03Speaker 1: what mistakes have you seen people make as far as
- 43:06Speaker 1: not using those tools?
- 43:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, So I think a big mistake is to
- 43:11Speaker 5: give a number when they ask you what your salary
- 43:15Speaker 5: requirement is in that phone call. So when they ask
- 43:19Speaker 5: you and they say, Jess, what's your salary requirement and
- 43:21Speaker 5: you say, well, I'd like to make eighty thousand dollars
- 43:25Speaker 5: a year or one hundred and eighty thousand or eight
- 43:29Speaker 5: hundred thousand, whatever, that's a mistake because it's either going
- 43:34Speaker 5: to be too high or too low.
- 43:36Speaker 3: It's rare that it would be just perfect and just right.
- 43:41Speaker 5: If you said one hundred and eighty thousand and the
- 43:45Speaker 5: top of their range is one sixty, they'll probably screen
- 43:50Speaker 5: you out and you won't get a chance to interview. Yeah,
- 43:53Speaker 5: but if you said one hundred and eighty and they
- 43:55Speaker 5: were willing to pay up to two forty, you just
- 43:58Speaker 5: took money out of your own pocket. So don't answer
- 44:02Speaker 5: that question with a number. Recruiters will pressure you for
- 44:06Speaker 5: a number because it's easier for them, but give.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Them a range instead.
- 44:13Speaker 5: And so here's the precise language that people should use
- 44:16Speaker 5: in this situation when when they ask the question, first
- 44:21Speaker 5: of all, ask for the ask for the budget, just
- 44:23Speaker 5: like I taught before, and then say, well, I'm discussing
- 44:28Speaker 5: with a number of other companies different opportunities, but they're
- 44:32Speaker 5: kind of similar in scope, and the numbers I'm discussing
- 44:37Speaker 5: with them are between A and B. So instead of
- 44:40Speaker 5: saying one to eighty, you could say I'm in an
- 44:44Speaker 5: active job search. I'm talking about this with several other
- 44:48Speaker 5: companies and those opportunities are paying between one sixty five
- 44:54Speaker 5: and low twos something like that. Right, you give a range,
- 45:00Speaker 5: and as long as the recruiter feels like there's overlap
- 45:03Speaker 5: between their range and yours, they will pass you through.
- 45:07Speaker 5: As long as they feel like you're a qualified, good candidate.
- 45:11Speaker 5: They don't want to tie up the interview team, which
- 45:13Speaker 5: is short staffed with interviews people that aren't going to
- 45:17Speaker 5: close at the end. They're not qualified, they're not interested,
- 45:21Speaker 5: or they're not affordable. If a recruiter does that too often,
- 45:25Speaker 5: they won't be a recruiter for very long. Yeah, So
- 45:28Speaker 5: it's their job to bring a slate of people who
- 45:31Speaker 5: are likely to be good candidates that they can close.
- 45:34Speaker 3: With an offer at the end.
- 45:36Speaker 5: But if you give them a range so you avoid
- 45:38Speaker 5: this problem of being too high.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Or too low.
- 45:41Speaker 5: It's kind of a secret weapon that I teach all
- 45:45Speaker 5: of my clients. I'm giving it to your audience for
- 45:49Speaker 5: two years because now here's the process and how it goes.
- 45:56Speaker 5: In my mind, the salary coach method is to understand
- 46:01Speaker 5: that the negotiation process begins at the very first time
- 46:05Speaker 5: you're talking with a company, and it continues.
- 46:08Speaker 3: All the way through the offer.
- 46:10Speaker 5: It's a long process, and you start with a range,
- 46:15Speaker 5: and then when you're interviewing, that's where you prove how
- 46:18Speaker 5: much you're worth. So this is your opportunity to move
- 46:22Speaker 5: up in your own range to show them that you're
- 46:26Speaker 5: worth low twos, intos, high twos, whatever it is, and
- 46:31Speaker 5: there are some specific things that you should do in
- 46:33Speaker 5: the interview process that will move you up that in
- 46:38Speaker 5: their mind as a high value person. It also, by
- 46:41Speaker 5: the way, helps you to get selected when you're competing
- 46:44Speaker 5: against ten other people. Yeah, you need to be the
- 46:47Speaker 5: preferred candidate before you can get an offer. And then
- 46:51Speaker 5: once you get an offer, like you ask what the
- 46:53Speaker 5: mistakes are like not.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Using a range as one of them.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Another one is accepting the offer immediate when it comes.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Eighty plus percent of people don't negotiate at all. That
- 47:05Speaker 5: means they take the offer when it comes. They're excited,
- 47:08Speaker 5: you know, yeah I got an offer. Yeah, like I
- 47:10Speaker 5: just want it. I want the job search to be done.
- 47:13Speaker 5: It's exhausting. Yeah, So there's all these emotions. Maybe you've
- 47:19Speaker 5: been beat up by the job search, you feel like
- 47:22Speaker 5: nobody's gonna want me, or your self esteem takes a
- 47:25Speaker 5: bit of a hit during this time. So an offer
- 47:28Speaker 5: comes and you're afraid that if you mess it up,
- 47:31Speaker 5: now you're going to be right back to the beginning
- 47:33Speaker 5: and you're gonna have to interview some more and you're
- 47:35Speaker 5: going to have to fend off the bill collectors and
- 47:37Speaker 5: do all that. You don't want to do any of that,
- 47:39Speaker 5: so you just say yes, yeah, you lock it up.
- 47:42Speaker 5: But the most power you ever have in a negotiation
- 47:47Speaker 5: for pay is between the time when they offer you
- 47:51Speaker 5: the job and when you say yes. So that's a
- 47:55Speaker 5: critical mistake that most people make. You have to realize
- 47:58Speaker 5: that you want something, But so do they. They want
- 48:02Speaker 5: you to say yes. They've picked you, you're the number
- 48:05Speaker 5: one candidate, and they're excited to have you join the team.
- 48:09Speaker 5: Right What they don't want is to get a know
- 48:12Speaker 5: from you because that means they have to.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Also go all the way back.
- 48:17Speaker 5: If it takes a company eighty or ninety days to
- 48:20Speaker 5: fill a position, imagine this. They've got a team that's
- 48:23Speaker 5: short staff. They're filling a job because there's a vacancy.
- 48:27Speaker 5: What happens in that situation, You've got all these people
- 48:30Speaker 5: that are covering the vacancy. The boss is doing extra work,
- 48:32Speaker 5: the people doing extra work, people are grumbling. If you
- 48:35Speaker 5: don't fix this pretty soon, boss, I'm going to quit.
- 48:39Speaker 5: And that boss wants to fill that position as much
- 48:44Speaker 5: as you want to say yes. So this is an
- 48:49Speaker 5: opportunity for you to ask for something is there anything
- 48:52Speaker 5: you want to ask for? This is the time to
- 48:54Speaker 5: do it. You have to ask for it in the
- 48:56Speaker 5: right way. You can even negotiate severans this period. Most
- 49:01Speaker 5: people don't even think about doing that, but you know,
- 49:05Speaker 5: at the senior levels, that's something that you should talk
- 49:08Speaker 5: about because if you're an executive, an unemployed executive, it
- 49:13Speaker 5: takes a long time to land. It can take twelve
- 49:16Speaker 5: months to get the next job.
- 49:20Speaker 2: John out here giving us game, You hear me, okay.
- 49:24Speaker 1: So I'm trying to see what I want to lay
- 49:28Speaker 1: up playing because I just keep hearing to ask you,
- 49:30Speaker 1: where did you get all his confidence from?
- 49:34Speaker 5: Well, I don't know, Maybe from the Lord, maybe from
- 49:38Speaker 5: our amazing father God's here's something that we should think
- 49:43Speaker 5: about when we're negotiating and all that God wants us
- 49:45Speaker 5: to have things. He gives us passion, and he gives
- 49:48Speaker 5: us dreams. That stuff is from him. He wants to
- 49:53Speaker 5: enable all of that so.
- 49:57Speaker 3: You can you can have it all.
- 50:00Speaker 5: And I think a misunderstanding creeps into our minds.
- 50:03Speaker 3: We think that our income comes from our job. It doesn't.
- 50:11Speaker 5: Our income comes from God, the Father, who is our provider,
- 50:16Speaker 5: and he provides the job, and he provides the income
- 50:19Speaker 5: and things like that. Sometimes we think it's me creating
- 50:23Speaker 5: the money or it's the job creating the money. And
- 50:28Speaker 5: it's no wonder that we feel lost and threatened when
- 50:33Speaker 5: those things are taken away. But if we have faith
- 50:36Speaker 5: in the right provider, then we can feel a little
- 50:40Speaker 5: more secure about what's going to happen and what's supposed
- 50:42Speaker 5: to happen.
- 50:45Speaker 2: I love you, I love John. I'm just going to
- 50:51Speaker 2: release this desert rate.
- 50:52Speaker 1: So say on camera Juhnt when I say any time
- 50:56Speaker 1: you feel like you need a platform to speak.
- 50:58Speaker 2: On this one you yes. I mean that with my
- 51:02Speaker 2: whole heart.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I don't care if it's virtual or if you say
- 51:06Speaker 1: just because I gotta release. This is a space and
- 51:10Speaker 1: I don't play about this. I really feel like this
- 51:12Speaker 1: gotta be a space where he can just speak freely.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Because the thing about it is as a ray, people
- 51:19Speaker 1: will try try because this is being a guy, would
- 51:22Speaker 1: try to pimp him or pimp his anointing. Because this
- 51:26Speaker 1: is anointing. This ain't this ain't just no gift talent.
- 51:29Speaker 1: This is anointing. The authority that this man walks in
- 51:32Speaker 1: this is different like this. You gotta have you My friends,
- 51:37Speaker 1: have to have platforms to where you can pour and
- 51:40Speaker 1: if God gives you something and you need to release it,
- 51:43Speaker 1: and you can got your own platform to do it all,
- 51:45Speaker 1: just as gonna be your part platform, because ain't no way,
- 51:49Speaker 1: there's no way that I can like not honor the
- 51:53Speaker 1: anointing of your life, John, Like, that's just you gotta
- 51:56Speaker 1: have a space and this is a safe space to
- 51:58Speaker 1: do that. So I want to say thank you, cause
- 52:00Speaker 1: I don't know if this is like, I know this
- 52:02Speaker 1: is not your first podcast, but I know my podcast
- 52:05Speaker 1: is different. I know the annoying that I have, okay,
- 52:07Speaker 1: and I know that merging and looking being able to
- 52:11Speaker 1: see kingdom and the practical you you embodied that like
- 52:16Speaker 1: desil rate. I gotta hear your your thoughts on these
- 52:18Speaker 1: cause I'm I'm done, Like i don't know what else
- 52:20Speaker 1: to say about John again, I'm back here, like okay, Wow,
- 52:25Speaker 1: So I think he knocked our heads off when he
- 52:28Speaker 1: when you ask the question about why we don't sometimes
- 52:34Speaker 1: research other religion in spaces, yeah, and when he says
- 52:38Speaker 1: most of the time, it's because we're not confident in
- 52:40Speaker 1: our own right. So, I mean, that's just a sobering
- 52:44Speaker 1: moment to like, so do you have faith or not? Like,
- 52:47Speaker 1: where are you grounded or not? Like you know what
- 52:49Speaker 1: I'm saying, Because if, if, if we're called to the world, Yeah,
- 52:53Speaker 1: like sometimes we have to have conversations with people who
- 52:55Speaker 1: don't look like us, people who don't even believe like us.
- 52:58Speaker 1: And how are we going to bring them into the
- 53:00Speaker 1: kingdom if we're not open to going into their spaces
- 53:02Speaker 1: and having conversations with them. So that was one, and
- 53:05Speaker 1: then when he began to talk about the salary, like
- 53:08Speaker 1: I hadn't been on a job since twenty fifteen, right,
- 53:12Speaker 1: But I believe God is opening up some spaces for
- 53:15Speaker 1: me as I'm in this season, been learning to trust.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Him as my provider, right.
- 53:22Speaker 1: And so my thing is, God, You've given me a
- 53:25Speaker 1: lot of different things, and I say things more like gifts, right,
- 53:29Speaker 1: And my understanding is that they're just tools in order
- 53:32Speaker 1: for him to be able to use them how he
- 53:34Speaker 1: needs to use them for the ultimate purpose. Right. And
- 53:37Speaker 1: so I'm like, Okay, God, if I my heart the
- 53:40Speaker 1: way my heart is and the people that I want
- 53:43Speaker 1: to serve, like, I would just give it all the way.
- 53:45Speaker 1: But I know that they're gonna make room in different ways.
- 53:50Speaker 1: So when you're talking about like the negotiation and the range,
- 53:52Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, I'm just taking this from the
- 53:56Speaker 1: creative space, right I'm like, Okay, most of the people
- 53:58Speaker 1: that if I'm if I'm a hundred percent honest, the
- 54:01Speaker 1: people that I would love to help and serve probably
- 54:05Speaker 1: and this and this is just through some experience through conversations,
- 54:09Speaker 1: can't afford what what my actual rate is, right, So
- 54:14Speaker 1: what just opened me up to Okay, Okay, God, I'm
- 54:17Speaker 1: trusting you as my provider, so I know you're gonna
- 54:19Speaker 1: take care of me. I know the things that I
- 54:20Speaker 1: need You've already provided for. So how can I serve
- 54:23Speaker 1: the people that you're calling me to? You know what
- 54:25Speaker 1: I'm saying. And when he said a range, just like
- 54:27Speaker 1: oh okay, well almost like a it makes me think
- 54:29Speaker 1: of like in therapy, they have what they call like
- 54:31Speaker 1: a sliding scale kind of thing.
- 54:33Speaker 2: And so that's what dropped in my spirit.
- 54:36Speaker 1: And so now I'm gonna go pray about it because
- 54:38Speaker 1: I'm just like man and just sitting back here once again. Uh,
- 54:43Speaker 1: mister Johnny, he has like so unassuming right, Like when
- 54:46Speaker 1: he walked in, it was just like, oh yeah, you
- 54:48Speaker 1: know I'm from Oregon. You know, we talked about his
- 54:51Speaker 1: daughters and stuff like that. But I'm sitting back here
- 54:53Speaker 1: like the wisdom, bro, Like the wisdom you gotta pay
- 55:00Speaker 1: this level, like it's a price tag, Like it's a
- 55:04Speaker 1: price for having mister John as a coach. Like and
- 55:07Speaker 1: he just dropped like no, like no, watch this about
- 55:11Speaker 1: five times at least you gotta write down note this
- 55:14Speaker 1: ain't no. This man got wisdom, bro, Like thank you,
- 55:18Speaker 1: thank you so much, like for God to like I'm
- 55:21Speaker 1: trying to get emotional because I'm just like so thankful
- 55:24Speaker 1: that God would even deem us worthy enough, this platform,
- 55:27Speaker 1: worthy enough for somebody like him. I'm talking about him
- 55:31Speaker 1: like he's not right here, but.
- 55:33Speaker 2: But for somebody like let's just call it Spader space.
- 55:36Speaker 1: This is a white man from an area I don't
- 55:40Speaker 1: know nothing about and we met through email. Yeah this
- 55:44Speaker 1: is what Oh my gosh, this is what God can do.
- 55:48Speaker 1: So if he's saying that I could, we could do this,
- 55:51Speaker 1: just something so simple as connect you.
- 55:53Speaker 2: We talked about connection not too long ago.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Connect you to that means that because I'm connected to
- 55:58Speaker 1: him now that the and resources that he has, it
- 56:01Speaker 1: got to be on my life.
- 56:04Speaker 2: I have to receive it.
- 56:05Speaker 1: And it's not by happenstance that you are watching this
- 56:08Speaker 1: episode right now. It's not by happenstance that his wisdom
- 56:12Speaker 1: is in your ears right now. It's the thing of
- 56:16Speaker 1: what you're gonna do about it. Are you gonna have
- 56:18Speaker 1: faith enough to move and push that needle? Are you
- 56:21Speaker 1: gonna have the faith enough to negotiate what belongs to
- 56:25Speaker 1: you anyway?
- 56:26Speaker 2: Yeah? It belongs to you anyway if we're kingdom people.
- 56:31Speaker 2: And this man said he just stuck.
- 56:32Speaker 1: John said that he studied every other religion and the one, oh,
- 56:37Speaker 1: thank you Lord, the one that was true, the one
- 56:40Speaker 1: that was left standing, thank you Lord, was Christianity, the
- 56:44Speaker 1: word of God, Jesus Christ himself.
- 56:47Speaker 2: What's the last one standing?
- 56:50Speaker 1: And you mean to tell me this man comes from
- 56:52Speaker 1: Oregon to Birmingham, Alabama to deposit this and you not
- 56:56Speaker 1: gonna use it?
- 56:57Speaker 2: You crazy?
- 56:59Speaker 1: This is me talking to my community, Johnny, You crazy.
- 57:02Speaker 1: And I just gave him free rate, So if you
- 57:04Speaker 1: want to come again, I just give it. So let
- 57:07Speaker 1: me calm all the way down to my podcast, because
- 57:10Speaker 1: I went preacher on y'all.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:13Speaker 3: I can't wait to see the call you.

- 58:42Speaker 5: Desiree about your business. I do prayer walks most days,
- 58:50Speaker 5: and that's when I asked God to talk to me.
- 58:55Speaker 5: And one day I was stuck in my business and
- 58:58Speaker 5: I didn't really understand why I'm a goal setter. I'm
- 59:02Speaker 5: a process thinker. I do all the math in my head.
- 59:07Speaker 5: I think about, well, okay, if I get this many
- 59:10Speaker 5: customers and the average one pays me this much, and
- 59:12Speaker 5: I can do the math and I can figure out
- 59:14Speaker 5: how much money I'm going to make and how much
- 59:16Speaker 5: money I need. And I had that all in my head,
- 59:19Speaker 5: and that's how I set goals. And God said, you
- 59:22Speaker 5: got it all backwards, you got it all wrong. Put
- 59:25Speaker 5: all that in the trash. And I had this dream
- 59:27Speaker 5: board up above, up above my desk where I could
- 59:32Speaker 5: and I had all those goals written there. It's like
- 59:34Speaker 5: make this number of calls and talk to this number
- 59:36Speaker 5: of people, he said, put all that in the garbage.
- 59:39Speaker 5: Replace it with you just want to help people. So
- 59:42Speaker 5: the first goal is to help ten people. The next goal,
- 59:46Speaker 5: help one hundred people. The next goal after that you're
- 59:48Speaker 5: going to help a thousand people. It's like, well, God,
- 59:51Speaker 5: how can I help a thousand people? There's only one
- 59:53Speaker 5: of me. And that led me to a whole bunch
- 59:55Speaker 5: of new business ideas and how I could help more people.
- 59:58Speaker 3: In a group setting. Stuff like that, And.
