- 0:42Speaker 2: think you've been in the industry and the recruiting industry
- 0:44Speaker 2: a really long time and probably have stacks of bad
- 0:47Speaker 2: hire stories and a bunch of wins too. So tell
- 0:51Speaker 2: me a little bit about your background. Where did you start?
- 0:54Speaker 2: You've been a long time ago.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I had to throw it back like twenty years, but yeah,
- 0:57Speaker 4: started in kind of the agency space and of through
- 1:01Speaker 4: you know, industrial, manufacturing, corporate and a little bit in between.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Okay, and so you've been in sourcing, run a full desk,
- 1:11Speaker 2: been over in corporate. I happen to know that you've
- 1:14Speaker 2: been involved in a ton of big integration projects, putting
- 1:17Speaker 2: in HRS systems and talent acquisition system so you know
- 1:22Speaker 2: you did that, I think globally over.
- 1:24Speaker 4: I did over a number of years. And you know
- 1:26Speaker 4: led great teams, you know, bringing in great talent, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 4: running everything from the sourcing, the screening, the hiring, all
- 1:34Speaker 4: the onboarding and you know background checks right.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So it' suffice to say tons of recruiting experience. So
- 1:41Speaker 2: some of these, some of these stories will probably ring
- 1:44Speaker 2: ring true to you. Just before we get started, though,
- 1:48Speaker 2: in remind everybody, submit your stories. We'd love to read them.

- 2:18Speaker 2: hang out with us for the days as we shoot
- 2:20Speaker 2: the show. So submit your stories all right, so let
- 2:26Speaker 2: me get started. I've got the first story. You ready,
- 2:30Speaker 2: all right? Here we go, all right. The boss goes
- 2:32Speaker 2: into the office of one of my dad's co workers
- 2:35Speaker 2: to discuss some kind of technical issue. They disagree about
- 2:38Speaker 2: the proper corrective measure. It escalates into a screaming match,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and the boss fires the coworker on the spot, tells
- 2:48Speaker 2: him to take off his stuff and get out. The
- 2:50Speaker 2: coworker comes back the next morning just like nothing happened.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So nobody's really sure what's going on, and since the
- 2:58Speaker 2: boss had to go out of town for a meeting,
- 3:00Speaker 2: can't get hold of him to ask, hey, should he
- 3:02Speaker 2: be here. He doesn't seem to be causing any problems, though,
- 3:06Speaker 2: so they just kind of do their thing and leave
- 3:08Speaker 2: him alone. The co worker keeps coming in and doing work,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and a couple of days later, the boss walks past
- 3:14Speaker 2: his door and does this kind of like double take,
- 3:18Speaker 2: Hey didn't I fire you? Without looking up from his desk.
- 3:23Speaker 2: The coworker replies, you can't fire me. I have too
- 3:25Speaker 2: much to work. I have too much work to do.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The boss thinks about this for a minute, shrugs, and
- 3:30Speaker 2: walks off. The dude kept working there for another couple
- 3:33Speaker 2: of years after that.
- 3:34Speaker 4: It's like an HR nightmare.
- 3:36Speaker 2: He was just like her, whatever, right, just come back,
- 3:40Speaker 2: you're fired. Uh huh, I'll see tomorrow.
- 3:44Speaker 3: He didn't really mean it, Yeah, he.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Was just kidding.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It was spur of the moment. Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I guess I wonder if he ever did that. Is
- 3:52Speaker 2: I assume they didn't have the screaming match again after that,
- 3:56Speaker 2: So I don't know. Lesson here. Persistence uh sometimes beats policy.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe he forgot that. He screamed at me yesterday,
- 4:04Speaker 3: right Fosse.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Went out of town. I don't know. I think, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: my kids were like that. I think they just ignore
- 4:11Speaker 2: me and you know, take their keys away from them
- 4:13Speaker 2: or something, and they're like.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Right, how to describe your set, Yeah, just take your car?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. All right. So next I worked at
- 4:23Speaker 2: a company that was going through layoffs. On jeez, all right.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I was in HR sitting next to the girl who
- 4:30Speaker 2: checked the anonymous HR tip line. That's the third party company,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, where where employees could call without being identified
- 4:39Speaker 2: to report HR issues. Turns out, and manager had been
- 4:43Speaker 2: feeling down about the layoffs and decided his team needed
- 4:47Speaker 2: a morale boost. He piled This doesn't sound like us
- 4:50Speaker 2: going into somewhere. He piled them all in a company
- 4:54Speaker 2: van and took them to a strip club.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Nice classy, there you.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Go include including two women. Oh okay, I bet they
- 5:07Speaker 2: were comfortable. The women said they were uncomfortable there we
- 5:11Speaker 2: go and wanted to leave. He said, find your own
- 5:14Speaker 2: right home. This was literally one day after the sexual
- 5:18Speaker 2: harassment training was completed.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Say that course was a fail. Yeah, that doesn't sound
- 5:25Speaker 3: like it was very exible.
- 5:27Speaker 2: He did not listen, much like the first guy who
- 5:29Speaker 2: didn't listen to the firing. That guy didn't listen to
- 5:31Speaker 2: the uh people not list the sexual harassment training. Yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 2: so safe to say he failed, like management one on
- 5:39Speaker 2: one class. I hope he was on the list of
- 5:42Speaker 2: layoff terminations. I don't really hope that you have deserved it.
- 5:48Speaker 2: My gosh, all right, last one and then I'll pass
- 5:52Speaker 2: off the lids. So I think she got a couple
- 5:54Speaker 2: I worked for. I work for a company that produces
- 5:58Speaker 2: I work for company produces me munitions. So background checks
- 6:01Speaker 2: are required. You cannot have a felony and work around firearms.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I always ask if there's anything in their back, always
- 6:10Speaker 2: ask if there's anything in the background that would make
- 6:12Speaker 2: them unqualified to work around munitions. Well, every recruiter does that, right,
- 6:16Speaker 2: Is anything in your past you want to tell me
- 6:18Speaker 2: about I've ever been to you were alive someone You
- 6:22Speaker 2: say it as a joke and hopes that they'll disclose something.
- 6:25Speaker 3: But one story you read they're in an interview, and
- 6:28Speaker 3: he was like, oh, it'll be fine, Like, as long
- 6:30Speaker 3: as you haven't in alive somebody, it'll be fine, as
- 6:32Speaker 3: Persa said, But what if I have.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I do? Remember that I hate my job right now?
- 6:41Speaker 4: Dan?
- 6:42Speaker 2: All right? I always ask if there's anything in their
- 6:44Speaker 2: background that would make them unqualified to work around munitions.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Answers always no, until the background check comes back and
- 6:53Speaker 2: they forgot they have prior felonies. I'm interviewed a candidate
- 6:58Speaker 2: and ask him if he would pass a background check
- 7:00Speaker 2: and he tells me yes, and not even that's that's
- 7:06Speaker 2: kind of like I checked the box rule, isn't it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean, like you're really not supposed to ask that question, right,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you make the conditional offer and then you do it,
- 7:14Speaker 2: so asking the question actually is illegal in probably twenty
- 7:17Speaker 2: five states. He then proceeded to bike his wait I'm
- 7:22Speaker 2: interviewing a candidate and ask him if he would pass
- 7:24Speaker 2: a background check. He tells me yes. He then proceeds
- 7:26Speaker 2: to hike his leg on my desk. He's going to
- 7:30Speaker 2: pass the background check and show me his ankle monitor lovely.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I again ask him if he has any felonies. He
- 7:38Speaker 2: proceeds to say no. I give him the benefit of
- 7:41Speaker 2: the doubt and finish the interview. I send the link
- 7:44Speaker 2: for the background check and he completes it. Three days later.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I see he's on parole for sa on a minor
- 7:53Speaker 2: serial stalking, and a bunch of other things in other states. People,
- 7:59Speaker 2: please be honest when interviewing. Most recruiters are not going
- 8:03Speaker 2: to risk their jobs by not doing a thorough background
- 8:05Speaker 2: check on an applicant. Be honest and will not waste
- 8:08Speaker 2: each other's time. She writes, all.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Right, you said he did show his ankle monk.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I felt like he was semi
- 8:16Speaker 2: telling the truth, kind of.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Like was he joking when he said, no, no.
- 8:21Speaker 4: This is this is just an accessory.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It's not real jewelry. I know you thought this was
- 8:27Speaker 2: a monitor. It's it's just something I wear. I don't
- 8:31Speaker 2: know that's happened. That's happened to you. No, not to me,
- 8:37Speaker 2: but I've I've heard stories of from our own customers
- 8:40Speaker 2: who didn't do certain types of searches. And someone showed
- 8:44Speaker 2: up first day of work with with UH an ankle
- 8:47Speaker 2: monitor for a federal charge and they did not search,
- 8:51Speaker 2: you know, in their background check. They weren't searching federal records.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And they're like, why is you know, you guys missed
- 8:55Speaker 2: a record, and we're like, no, you didn't search that.
- 8:58Speaker 2: That was your choice. And then they come back, somebody
- 9:02Speaker 2: shows up with an ankle monitor. You know what always happens.
- 9:05Speaker 2: They show up with the ankle monitor. That story quickly
- 9:07Speaker 2: goes to some VP or executive VP, who then lands
- 9:11Speaker 2: on top of HR and.
- 9:13Speaker 4: The whiskers in the office.
- 9:15Speaker 3: So that's interesting.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why recruiters double check, you know, because recruiters
- 9:23Speaker 2: always should double check because honesty is sometimes notre.
- 9:28Speaker 4: It's a little rare.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I think applicants lie all right before I pass it off.
- 9:35Speaker 2: The bad hire sponsored by b checks and every hire
- 9:38Speaker 2: who looked perfect on paper but turned into an HR nightmare.
- 9:42Speaker 2: That's when b checks comes in with industry leading accuracy,
- 9:46Speaker 2: the lightning fast results in under twenty hours and fraud
- 9:48Speaker 2: detection tech other screeners miss b checks, help schools, cities, churches,
- 9:54Speaker 2: ministries and businesses higher right the first time, because a
- 9:58Speaker 2: bad hire doesn't just cost money, It risk your culture,
- 10:01Speaker 2: your reputation, and even your safety. Switch today and get
- 10:05Speaker 2: up to two thousand dollars in account credit. Don't let
- 10:07Speaker 2: your next bad hire become your problem. Visit be checks
- 10:11Speaker 2: dot IOW and protect your people, your reputation, and your sanity.
- 10:15Speaker 2: All right, lindsay, here we go. I'll pass it off
- 10:18Speaker 2: to you. You've got.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Some good ones, okay, yeah, right, with some good ones.
- 10:24Speaker 2: You was talking about one earlier today and I was like, okay,
- 10:26Speaker 2: this could be a good one today. All right.
- 10:28Speaker 4: So a VP at my company caught when that she
- 10:31Speaker 4: was going to be fired. Her secretary told her that
- 10:34Speaker 4: the higher ups were on their way. The VP told
- 10:37Speaker 4: her secretary that she was going to the bathroom. After
- 10:40Speaker 4: waiting for thirty minutes, they had someone go and check
- 10:43Speaker 4: the bathroom, and the VP had never gone to the bathroom.
- 10:46Speaker 4: She went home to avoid being fired.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Does that work? Can you just can you just like
- 10:52Speaker 2: it's kind of like being the first one. It's kind
- 10:54Speaker 2: of the first guy who just ignored his like, I'm
- 10:56Speaker 2: not going to be here for that.
- 10:57Speaker 4: So again if I'm not here, yeah, fine, yes, yes,
- 11:00Speaker 4: now I'm going to medical leave right.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Now, that's probably right.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Actually I'm sick, Yes, I have to go.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah, Exel Lindsay's heard like a thousand different excuses, got
- 11:11Speaker 2: thousand different I'm a medical I'm in trouble. No, I'm
- 11:14Speaker 2: a medical lea. Yeah all right.
- 11:16Speaker 4: So another good one says I hired someone that ended
- 11:20Speaker 4: up accidentally using the company card to pay for his
- 11:24Speaker 4: bail bond when pulled over for driving under the influence.
- 11:28Speaker 4: The position required driving all over the state, and apparently
- 11:31Speaker 4: this person also had a suspended license, so the employee
- 11:35Speaker 4: was charged with that also. Uh, and we didn't find
- 11:38Speaker 4: out until the charge was on the credit card and
- 11:41Speaker 4: had to investigate further.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Sorry, how do you accidentities the company card.
- 11:45Speaker 2: On something because you're broke, you don't have any money,
- 11:47Speaker 2: just like you got to pay it, and you're like,
- 11:49Speaker 2: hopefully they don't see it.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I can see pulling it out at the grocery store.
- 11:52Speaker 4: My accident if it's the same color or something like that.
- 11:55Speaker 4: But that's kind of like attention.
- 11:56Speaker 2: That happens our attention, our staff. Sometimes someone uses the
- 11:59Speaker 2: card inverdently this is all I got. Yeah, like, oops, oops,
- 12:03Speaker 2: I paid my dentist one thousand dollars. Whoops. You know
- 12:06Speaker 2: that's happened.
- 12:07Speaker 3: It's like one guy, uh the story you told that
- 12:09Speaker 3: he took the company card and went to a hotel
- 12:12Speaker 3: and paid for a bunch of room service. Do you
- 12:14Speaker 3: remember that one?
- 12:15Speaker 2: You have like a great memory for these stories have
- 12:18Speaker 2: all this reach.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It reminds me of other ones that we've read.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Other things not to do well.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's kind of interesting because you know in a survey
- 12:28Speaker 2: that we did, we we we surveyed people and asked
- 12:31Speaker 2: him would you tell your employee if you got arrested?
- 12:33Speaker 2: And like a six and ten say yeah, no, I
- 12:36Speaker 2: wouldn't do that. And there's every company has a policy.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And we have that check three sixty five product that
- 12:43Speaker 2: does continuous monitoring, and so you find out when someone's
- 12:47Speaker 2: been arrested. You don't just uh it on. Not a
- 12:52Speaker 2: good monitoring system.
- 12:54Speaker 4: It comes a little after the fact.
- 12:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:57Speaker 3: So last one.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I once had a candidate for an immedia intermediate level
- 13:01Speaker 4: analyst bragged during an interview that he used to work
- 13:04Speaker 4: other jobs and play poker while working his primary position.
- 13:09Speaker 4: For example, for about two weeks before he was caught
- 13:12Speaker 4: and got fired from both of his jobs, he would
- 13:15Speaker 4: take long lunches. No one knew where he was between
- 13:18Speaker 4: ten thirty and one thirty. It's a long lunch, is
- 13:20Speaker 4: a long one. It turns out he had gotten a
- 13:22Speaker 4: job making pizza next door at the pizza restaurant. He
- 13:26Speaker 4: was working there during the rush hour for lunch. He
- 13:30Speaker 4: also bragged about playing poker at work constantly. This was
- 13:33Speaker 4: I guess in the late two thousands, when online poker
- 13:36Speaker 4: was still in boom or popular.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I think it still is.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I was like, I think that's still a thing.
- 13:42Speaker 4: He bragged these things to me as if a relatively
- 13:44Speaker 4: young professional at the time would think that that was cool.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Multitasking at vera finest and again like he thought it
- 13:51Speaker 4: might have demonstrated his ability to multitask very well. And
- 13:56Speaker 4: either way, we did not extend him the offer.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Wait, this is for a.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Recruiter, and this is a candidate that shared this story.
- 14:04Speaker 2: No way, Okay, So I was thinking this when you
- 14:06Speaker 2: were telling the stories again that I knew someone in
- 14:08Speaker 2: my So this is a recruiter, and because the recruiter
- 14:12Speaker 2: is saying, because I'm young, he thinks he can share
- 14:14Speaker 2: this cool stuff with me, and how he multie that's funny.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I think that that.
- 14:18Speaker 4: You know, we've got that bond, bring it com in.
- 14:20Speaker 4: You know this isn't the real boss. It's the gatekeeper too.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, this person's Yeah, he's the one. Think I'm
- 14:26Speaker 2: cool because I can multitask pizza for you, lots of skills,
- 14:30Speaker 2: I can win you a lot of money. Good time.
- 14:34Speaker 4: So, Emma, what's your stories looking today?
- 14:37Speaker 3: I normally have really good ones. Yeah, Ken always says
- 14:41Speaker 3: that I have good ones. Yeah, okay, ready, Yes, my
- 14:47Speaker 3: bookstore wasn't exactly known for strict management, which meant we
- 14:50Speaker 3: had some real characters on staff. Take this sweet lady
- 14:55Speaker 3: late fifties, early sixties, we'll call her Darlene honest at first,
- 15:00Speaker 3: who was just kind of forgetful, one of those employees
- 15:03Speaker 3: who can never quite remember how to do things, but
- 15:06Speaker 3: harmless enough on until one day she decides it's time
- 15:10Speaker 3: it's time to show off something she keeps in her purse.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Not a picture of her grandkids, not her new lipstick, Nope,
- 15:17Speaker 3: her gun on the sales bool, customers around, staff around
- 15:23Speaker 3: gets the most norful thing in the world.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Just pull it out store, right, Hey, check this out.
- 15:31Speaker 3: That's it for the first one. Yeah, I know, not
- 15:34Speaker 3: as exciting as the one.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Maybe maybe one of the maybe one of the recruited questions.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Do you I don't know anything. You do you intend
- 15:43Speaker 2: to use it in her store? Why you work here?
- 15:45Speaker 2: Because we've really preferred you to.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Maybe you should apply for a security role if you
- 15:49Speaker 4: want to carry a gun?
- 15:50Speaker 3: So what you'd need to see the bookstore for? But
- 15:54Speaker 3: you know it's crazy out there. Yeah, okay, here's my
- 16:00Speaker 3: next one. Back when I was running my welding shop,
- 16:04Speaker 3: I had one of those moments you just don't forget.
- 16:07Speaker 3: I walked in one morning and there's this huge pool
- 16:10Speaker 3: of blood under one of the saws, no one around,
- 16:14Speaker 3: No one was around. I followed the trail through the shop,
- 16:17Speaker 3: spotted in the office, out the door, and across the
- 16:20Speaker 3: parking lot. It looked like something out of a crime show.
- 16:23Speaker 3: So I hopped in my truck to see if I
- 16:25Speaker 3: could find whoever it was. A few minutes later, there
- 16:28Speaker 3: he was, my brand new employee, riding his bicycle down
- 16:31Speaker 3: the road. He had a bloody T shirt wrapped around
- 16:34Speaker 3: his hand, pedaling legging it was no big deal. Turns
- 16:37Speaker 3: out he'd cut his thumb clean off and the wild part.
- 16:41Speaker 3: He stuck it in his pocket and decided the best
- 16:43Speaker 3: way to get help was to pedal eighteen miles to
- 16:45Speaker 3: the hospital.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Phones don't work, Yeah, don't call nine one one, don't
- 16:54Speaker 2: call an ambulance. I'm gonna pedal the ambulance. I drive. Yeah,
- 16:59Speaker 2: I just I just really shouldn't do that. But I'm
- 17:02Speaker 2: just imagining holding on to the to the.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Handle, off balance, lean into the left.
- 17:12Speaker 2: All the sad the first day on the job, A
- 17:15Speaker 2: little sad, I would say, I would say that that
- 17:18Speaker 2: hires suspect if that guy's not sharp enough to unintended
- 17:25Speaker 2: right there? Yeah, solid thirty. I'm gonna take a forty
- 17:29Speaker 2: minute drop. I'm gonna take a forty minute pedal forty
- 17:31Speaker 2: probably take longer than that. Hell would that take? It
- 17:33Speaker 2: would probably take.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Decaying right, And the boss is.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I can tell you just keep bring me some light higher.
- 17:43Speaker 2: You always do this to you, guns, guns and guns
- 17:48Speaker 2: and blood.
- 17:48Speaker 3: That's what you think you want to hear your craziest story.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that is crazy. It was a bad hire clearly
- 17:55Speaker 2: not good. Hired him clearly not good with us all,
- 17:58Speaker 2: doesn't understand safety measures and not prady enough to call
- 18:02Speaker 2: nine one one of them.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Lots of concerns there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'm ready for my last one.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I am okay, this one.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Is not as gory.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Okay, good. I love the wholesome, good hearted stories. Can
- 18:15Speaker 2: agree good lack of violence coming here.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Back when I worked at Jimmy John's, we had this
- 18:21Speaker 3: one delivery driver who was, let's just say, not the brightest.
- 18:26Speaker 3: He literally drive home with the cartopper still on top
- 18:30Speaker 3: of his car more than once on our busiest day
- 18:32Speaker 3: of the year, one dollar sub day, he got sent
- 18:35Speaker 3: to deliver food just half a mile down the road,
- 18:38Speaker 3: except forty five minutes later, the customer calls asking where
- 18:41Speaker 3: her order is. By the time he finally shows up,
- 18:44Speaker 3: we've already made a replacement. The owner quietly pulls him aside,
- 18:48Speaker 3: doesn't yell, and I'm thinking he's actually going to get
- 18:51Speaker 3: away with it. But then a cop walks in, points
- 18:53Speaker 3: right at him, and hauls him outside. Next thing we see,
- 18:56Speaker 3: he's face first against the big glass windows getting handcuffed.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Turns out he'd gone miles out of range, hit two cars,
- 19:04Speaker 3: fled the scene with the Jimmy John sign still on
- 19:06Speaker 3: top of his car, and on top of that, cops
- 19:09Speaker 3: found illegal substances in his vehicle. Lovely never saw him
- 19:12Speaker 3: again after that.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Super good higher. That's that's what you call fire without firing.
- 19:17Speaker 2: You just you doing that. You just cop took them away.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I guess you still have to fire them legally. I guess,
- 19:22Speaker 2: but I don't. You don't have to say it. You
- 19:26Speaker 2: have to do the hard conversation. You just like how
- 19:28Speaker 2: we do that.
- 19:29Speaker 3: He's Bundy.
- 19:30Speaker 4: So where am I going to send that last page.
- 19:35Speaker 2: To the jail?
- 19:36Speaker 4: Which block will you be in? Yeah?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Do you want that in commissary credit? Or that's all mine?
- 19:45Speaker 3: Improve?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. All right, well that's that's that's kind
- 19:48Speaker 2: of a wrap on episode say seven. Huge, thanks everyone,
