- 0:00The Lord Jesus Christ is not one-dimensional.
- 0:06He cannot be rightly reduced to a few qualities that fit our own
- 0:12personal agenda by making God in our own image.
- 0:17To become like the Lord is more than worthiness.
- 0:22It is to incorporate into your being His qualities, all of
- 0:29them. Your most important creation is
- 0:33and will ever be you. Who are you and who will you
- 0:38become better than? Choose who you want to be is
- 0:44choose to follow Christ. There is nothing of greater
- 0:49importance in all eternity than the Atonement of Jesus Christ,
- 0:56except for possibly. Who is your God?
- 1:16Do you make God in your own image?
- 1:21What is? What is your greatest work in
- 1:24life? Another question, if God is
- 1:29merciful and if and if you can always repent and be forgiven,
- 1:34then why not do whatever you want now and repent later?
- 1:40Are you living a church centered or Christ centered life?
- 1:46Those are some of the questions we will consider in this episode
- 1:51titled Jesus Christ is the Way Choose Christ.
- 1:59Hello, my name is Larry Corbridge and this is episode 13
- 2:05of the Stand Forever series. In the last episode, we observed
- 2:10the characteristics that distinguish us from all other
- 2:15forms of life are intelligence and potential.
- 2:21We said the hallmark of intelligence is rational
- 2:24behavior, thought, and rational choices.
- 2:30We concluded the supreme expression of intelligence, the
- 2:34crowning achievement of every rational being, is to choose
- 2:40best, and the best choices are to receive the gifts of God's
- 2:46Son, God's Spirit, and God's life, and then help others do
- 2:52the same. Those are and have always been
- 2:56and will always be the best choices through all sections of
- 3:02the River of Life. There is a tendency, it seems to
- 3:08me, to oversimplify at times, Christ by reducing him to one or
- 3:15more select attributes of his character and make those
- 3:20attributes the North Star. As I said before, a false God
- 3:26can be a principle, even a true principle, or it can be 1 aspect
- 3:33of the character of Christ. But if that principle or
- 3:37attribute becomes the North Star rather than Christ as a whole,
- 3:43it becomes a false God. Consider, for example, order.
- 3:51God's house is a House of order. Chaos is the natural state of
- 3:57things, and divine instant instincts push against chaos to
- 4:03create order. Order is a godly attribute, but
- 4:07it is not the whole of godliness, and if maintaining
- 4:12order and control becomes one of the highest priorities, you will
- 4:18feel life is out of whack whenever things spin out of
- 4:22control as they do and will. More than maintaining control
- 4:29and order, which is a noble objective, we should strive to
- 4:33know and follow Christ in all his dimensions.
- 4:40Christ is also the Prince of Peace.
- 4:43He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you not as
- 4:49the world giveth, give I unto you.
- 4:52Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
- 4:58He also said in me ye might have peace.
- 5:04But he also said, Think not that I am come to send peace on
- 5:10earth. I came not to send peace, but a
- 5:14sword. Another example, John said God
- 5:19is love and love of course is embedded in the 1st and 2nd
- 5:25great commandments. Love is at the very heart of the
- 5:29gospel and character of Jesus Christ.
- 5:31But He is much more than only love and His gospel is more than
- 5:39sunshine and roses. John did not say God is only
- 5:44love. On two occasions the Lord
- 5:48cleared the temple of money changers and merchants by force.
- 5:54He used a braided whip in in at least in the first instance.
- 6:00On another occasion he said to some of the Pharisees, Ye are of
- 6:05your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
- 6:11On another occasion he said, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
- 6:16hypocrites, for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed
- 6:21appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's
- 6:27bones, and all uncleanness. Not to diminish love in the
- 6:34least, but if order, love, peace or tolerance, or whatever single
- 6:41attribute you may choose to define Christ becomes the North
- 6:46Star, it becomes a false God. The Lord Jesus Christ is not
- 6:56one-dimensional. He cannot be rightly reduced to
- 7:03a few qualities that fit our own personal agenda, turning things
- 7:08on on their head by making God in our own image.
- 7:14One of the reasons for the restoration of the Church of
- 7:17Jesus Christ in our day is precisely because, in the Lord's
- 7:23words, every man walketh in his own way and after the image of
- 7:29his own God, whose image is in the likeness of the world.
- 7:38One of the many things we all have in common is inevitable,
- 7:44inescapable death. Life is a miracle with with each
- 7:51beat of your heart, but one day it will stop.
- 7:56And when it does, what will you have accomplished?
- 8:01When you look back over the course of your life, what will
- 8:05have been your greatest work, your most important creation?
- 8:12I'd like to suggest your greatest work, your most
- 8:16important creation is and will ever be you, Brigham Young said.
- 8:25The greatest and most important labor we have to perform is to
- 8:30cultivate ourselves. You have a choice.
- 8:38You can decide what you will do with your life.
- 8:41You can choose what kind of person you will become.
- 8:45Do you think about that? Do you think about and plan for
- 8:49what you want to become or who you want to become?
- 8:54Who are you and who will you become?
- 8:58By this I I I don't mean are you or will you be a cowboy, a
- 9:03lawyer, a surfer, homemaker, engineer, computer programmer,
- 9:08accountant, or anything of the sort.
- 9:12I don't refer to what kind of car you will drive or what kind
- 9:16of clothes you wear, what kind of house you live in, or what
- 9:20kind of family you will raise. I mean, when all of that is
- 9:25removed and there you are standing alone, who will you be?
- 9:30I mean you what personality, what strengths, knowledge,
- 9:38presence, qualities, virtues and character will you have?
- 9:43What will you look like? What will you sound like?
- 9:46What will it be like to be around you?
- 9:48Who? Who will you be?
- 9:51We plan many things in life. Most of us live in a house built
- 9:57from a plan. Someone first envisioned the
- 10:00house in her mind and a plan was then put to paper.
- 10:06We plan our time and days, weeks, years and beyond.
- 10:09We have meal plans, meeting plans, financial plans,
- 10:13production plans, marketing plans, and travel plans.
- 10:17Every intentional creation of both God and man is the product
- 10:22really of the same. Process starts with an idea,
- 10:27then a vision of what can be, and then a plan, and then the
- 10:33work to bring it about. But have you planned your
- 10:37greatest work? Have you envisioned who you will
- 10:42become? Do you plan for what kind of
- 10:45person you want to become? Can you see in your mind who you
- 10:52want to be? Do you know as you consider what
- 10:57kind of person you want to become, what choices do you
- 11:02have? The choices are maybe more
- 11:06limited than what you might think.
- 11:09Here are most of the choices, but overall they are simply a
- 11:14choice between the qualities of light or the qualities of
- 11:18darkness. Do you want to be powerful or
- 11:23weak? Certain and confident or afraid
- 11:28and insecure? Comfortable with yourself or
- 11:32arrogant and abrasive? Do you want to be filled with
- 11:35light or darkness? Do you want to have peace or
- 11:40conflict within, Generous or selfish?
- 11:43Influential or inconsequential? Do you want to be free or a
- 11:48slave, happy or miserable? Do you want to be kind and
- 11:55loving or mean and cruel? Honest or dishonest?
- 11:59Do you want to be forgiving or hard and unforgiving?
- 12:03Knowledgeable or ignorant? Do you want to be a person of
- 12:08faith or doubt and fear? Trustworthy or unreliable?
- 12:15Hardworking or lazy? Do you want to be cheerful or
- 12:21despondent? The 1st of each of these
- 12:26choices, as I said, is an attribute of light.
- 12:31They are incorporated into your character as you choose to
- 12:36follow Christ. As you consider the question of
- 12:41what kind of person you will become, you must understand the
- 12:46dynamic process of life. You not only can change, but you
- 12:52do change all the time, mentally, physically,
- 12:57emotionally, and spiritually. Up until recently, science held
- 13:02that brains do not change after childhood.
- 13:06We now know, however, that not to be true.
- 13:09The brain is not hardwired by adulthood and can be rewired by
- 13:15changing habits and thinking differently.
- 13:19The ability of the brain to change is referred to as
- 13:22neuroplasticity. To recognize physical changes
- 13:28requires really little more attention than occasionally
- 13:32looking in the mirror. But you are also evolving
- 13:36emotionally and spiritually. All those changes are either for
- 13:41better or worse, depending on what you are doing and how you
- 13:47are thinking. Sometimes people do not believe
- 13:52they can change. They excuse their failures and
- 13:55weaknesses by saying that's just the way I am.
- 14:01I'm just a short tempered impatient person or whatever.
- 14:05I can't get up in the morning. That's just the way I am.
- 14:09That's that's my nature or I'm just shy, that's all.
- 14:13That's just who I am. I'm just not very strong.
- 14:17I'm not really a spiritual person or whatever it may be.
- 14:21To believe that weaknesses and deficiencies in your character
- 14:25are unchangeable is to reject the central truth of the plan of
- 14:31salvation. You are not etched in stone.
- 14:37You are a dynamic, changing, evolving being.
- 14:41You are always changing. You never stay the same.
- 14:45You cannot stand still. You are right now the sum total
- 14:50of what you have thought, seen, heard, said and done.
- 14:56What you think, say, do, here and see causes you to change for
- 15:00good or evil, to become either stronger or weaker, to either
- 15:05internalize the qualities of light or the qualities of
- 15:09darkness. Therefore you are responsible
- 15:16for who you are, and you are are responsible for who you will
- 15:22become. Do you know what kind of person
- 15:26you want to become? Do you do you see in your mind
- 15:31who you want to be? Do you know Jesus asked a
- 15:37similar but perplexing question? He said what manner of men IE to
- 15:44be. He was speaking then to his
- 15:48Nephite disciples, and so He asked about men.
- 15:52But the question applies to us all.
- 15:54And so He asks what manner of men and women IE to be.
- 16:02Then answering his own question, he said, Even as I am president.
- 16:12David O McKay summed it up this way, saying the highest of all
- 16:18ideals are the teachings and particularly the life of Jesus
- 16:22of Nazareth, and that man is most truly great.
- 16:27Who is most Christ like. What you sincerely in your heart
- 16:33think of Christ will determine what you are and will largely
- 16:39determine what your acts will be.
- 16:42By choosing Him as our ideal, we create within ourselves a desire
- 16:49to be like Him, to have fellowship with Him again.
- 16:53That's President McKay, a woman speaking to youth advised.
- 17:00Decide who you want to be and go for it.
- 17:05That advice isn't all bad. It's better, of course, than
- 17:09being knocked around by the circumstances of life, never
- 17:12going anywhere or never accomplishing much.
- 17:15But the world offers no one equal to your full potential or
- 17:23worthy of your highest emulation.
- 17:26If you look around in the world for a star to emulate, you will
- 17:30fall far short of your real potential.
- 17:35One of the reasons for the restoration is to part the night
- 17:39clouds and reveal the North Star.
- 17:45Better than choose who you want to be is choose to follow Christ
- 17:54from the beginning of time. God has repeatedly invited us to
- 17:59put Him first. Trust in Him, not instead of
- 18:05everyone and everything else, but above anyone and everything
- 18:09else. Trust in God the Eternal Father,
- 18:15in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
- 18:21Therein is strength, wisdom, clarity, confidence, power,
- 18:27knowledge, light, intelligence, sustenance, fulfillment,
- 18:31meaning, faith, Lovejoy, and peace.
- 18:37God gave to Moses 10 commandments.
- 18:40The first is, Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- 18:48The second commandment thou shalt not make unto thee.
- 18:53Any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in
- 18:56the heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in
- 19:01the water under the earth, reinforces the first commandment
- 19:06to have no other gods before the Lord God of Israel.
- 19:11The Old Testament is especially replete with denunciation of
- 19:17idol worship. An idol is not only made of
- 19:22stone or wood, and a false God or false Christ, as I said
- 19:28before, can be something other than a person.
- 19:31And if a person, it need not be one who claims to be Christ or
- 19:37the object of worship. A false God may be an idea, even
- 19:43a good idea, a principle, even a true principle, a lifestyle or
- 19:48obsession on anything or anyone above or before God the Father
- 19:54and she's Jesus Christ. It includes anything or anyone
- 20:00that becomes the basis. Listen to this.
- 20:04It includes anyone that becomes or anything that becomes the
- 20:09basis for making choices above God our Father and the Lord
- 20:14Jesus Christ or distracts from worship of them.
- 20:19So who is your God? What God do you worship?
- 20:27It's really not all that complicated to tell.
- 20:30It's easy to tell your God is simply the standard by which you
- 20:35make choices. It's that simple.
- 20:39It is the standard by which you decide what you see, hear, say
- 20:45and think and do, and the standard for measuring also the
- 20:49past. If you see what you see, hear
- 20:53what you hear, say what you say, think what you think, and do
- 20:56what you do based on what is easiest, you worship the God of
- 21:04comfort and ease. As a result, that God will give
- 21:08you what He has to offer, hollow comfort, empty ease, and no
- 21:15more. If you make decisions based on
- 21:20recognition, acceptance, and praise of others, you worship
- 21:24the great God of popularity. As a result, that fickle God
- 21:30will jerk your chain one way and then another and give what
- 21:33little he has to offer. Fleeting popularity, which
- 21:38vanishes like the morning dew, but no more.
- 21:43If you do what you do based on the bottom line, whatever will
- 21:48generate the greatest monetary gain, You worship the God of
- 21:53wealth. That God will give you all he
- 21:56has to offer. Fleeting wealth and possessions,
- 22:00but no more. If you do what you do based on
- 22:04the belief that people prosper only by their own industry and
- 22:08intelligence. That everything came to be
- 22:12haphazardly out of nothing, by nothing, for nothing.
- 22:16If you believe in nothing, then nothing is your God and nothing
- 22:22will give you nothing. If you make decisions based on
- 22:28your own self-image or what you want to do, what best satisfies
- 22:35your opinions and desires, then you worship the God of self and
- 22:41you and you will make of you whatever you can, but far, far
- 22:46less than your full potential. If you do what you do to please
- 22:52others, a spouse, a parent, or someone else, that person is
- 22:56your God, and who knows what he or she will give you.
- 23:01If you make decisions primarily based on a single virtue or
- 23:06bellwether principles such as tolerance, love, or joy, then
- 23:11you worship apart, but not the whole.
- 23:16That God, however good it may be, will give you what she can,
- 23:21but far less than the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ
- 23:26and far less than your full potential.
- 23:31If you make decisions based on self gratification, you worship
- 23:35the God of the flesh who will reward you with a flash of
- 23:40pizzazz followed by an endless void.
- 23:45If you make choices based on walking the line between right
- 23:50and wrong, maybe walking up to the line but not crossing over,
- 23:55you, then walk in the middle, somewhere in between weak and
- 24:00strong, somewhere in between light and dark.
- 24:06And even if you don't cross the line, you will worship the great
- 24:09God of mediocrity walking with the crowd.
- 24:16But if you make decisions looking to the Lord as your
- 24:22guide, then and only then you worship Him, then and only then
- 24:32is He your God. He will give you all.
- 24:38He and the Father have every good thing forever.
- 24:48A character like His that will endure throughout eternity,
- 24:55Peace, glory, dominions, power, infinite capacity, knowledge,
- 25:04light and intelligence of fullness, of joy, the
- 25:08continuation of family and posterity throughout eternity,
- 25:13and every other good thing in this life and eternity.
- 25:21To worship at the altar of any other God is folly.
- 25:27Which is not to say you shouldn't be influenced by other
- 25:30good people, principles and persuasions which you can't
- 25:35avoid anyway. The Lord said thou shalt have no
- 25:41other gods before me. He didn't say Thou shalt have no
- 25:46other God but me. The commandment is to put God
- 25:53first, not at the exclusion of everything and everyone else, as
- 25:59I said, but paramount, above and beyond everything and everyone
- 26:03else. First faith in the Lord Jesus
- 26:09Christ. Choose best.
- 26:12Choose Christ. As an active member of the
- 26:19Church of Jesus Christ, it seems to me it's easy to live a church
- 26:26centered life, maybe more than a Christ centered life, and and
- 26:33not fully realize it at the time.
- 26:36It is easy for the church to become the one thing or even the
- 26:44North Star. To be clear, this is not to
- 26:47diminish the importance of the church in the least.
- 26:53One cannot fully live a Christ centered life as he intends
- 26:59without the church he established for that very
- 27:03purpose. But we may look beyond the mark,
- 27:08blind to Christ or unawares, making him a lesser light.
- 27:14Christ and his church are overlapping circles, but they're
- 27:21not concentric. A little girl stands at the
- 27:26podium to bear her testimony. What does she say?
- 27:30I'd like to bear my testimony. I know the church is true.
- 27:36That's fine. I'm really not critical of that.
- 27:39I'm I'm just struck by what I've never heard a child say.
- 27:44I'd like to bear my testimony. I know Jesus Christ is the Son
- 27:50of God. I know if we follow him, we will
- 27:54be happy. And if we forget and make
- 27:56mistakes, we can be forgiven because He paid for our sins.
- 28:03I've never heard that testimony from a child.
- 28:07Maybe you have. I hope to hear it someday.
- 28:11One of the patterns that emerge from serving on the Restoration
- 28:16and Cancellations Committee was the tendency of centering one's
- 28:22life on the Church of Jesus Christ rather than Christ.
- 28:27A man has doubts about the church.
- 28:30He expresses his doubts to his wife and she shares her faith.
- 28:36He persists in what gave rise to the doubts in the 1st place and
- 28:41not surprisingly concludes the church is not true.
- 28:46He becomes bitter and angry thinking that friends, family
- 28:50and teachers throughout his life all duped him.
- 28:55He next concludes there is no God and then he's unfaithful to
- 29:01his wife. He decides he was cheated out of
- 29:05all the pizzazz of a swinging single.
- 29:09Having married at a young age, which with beliefs so different
- 29:13than what he has now adopted, he leaves his wife and family in
- 29:20his mind to be free. A divorce follows.
- 29:24Church membership was withdrawn, whether at his request or at the
- 29:29initiative of local leaders. This example that I've offered
- 29:35is couched in the context of a man, a husband, and a father,
- 29:39but it's not unique to men. It could just as well be a
- 29:43woman, wife and mother. The pattern is the same either
- 29:47way. It does not.
- 29:49I'm not saying it occurs in every instance, but it is by far
- 29:54and away prevalent enough to be a pattern.
- 29:58The rule are not the exception. It plays out over and over and
- 30:03over again. It is stunning how quickly and
- 30:06negatively failure of 1's testimony of the church effects
- 30:12every other aspect of life. Usually when one's testimony of
- 30:18the church is shaken, everything else falls to the ground as
- 30:23well. That should not happen.
- 30:27The fact that the failure of testimony of the church often
- 30:31leads so quickly to disbelief in God, the abandonment of family
- 30:37and principles of eternal truth, including fidelity and marriage,
- 30:41providing for a family and raising them in light and truth
- 30:45suggests a church centered life rather than a Christ centered
- 30:50life. And how quickly thinking is
- 30:53muddled when the Spirit withdraws.
- 30:57If one has a testimony of the church founded on the rock of
- 31:01Revelation, he will not likely fall away.
- 31:07But if one also has a testimony of God the Father and Jesus
- 31:13Christ, he should at least remain true to spouse and family
- 31:19even when belief in the church is shaken.
- 31:23The mistaken belief that church is not true does not logically
- 31:28lead to the conclusion that there is no God, and that right
- 31:32and wrong, truth and error, dissolve away altogether.
- 31:35But that is what usually happens when people turn away from the
- 31:40church. Often all the wheels fall off
- 31:46again. One cannot fully live a Christ
- 31:49centered life without the Church He established for that very
- 31:54purpose. His Church, with the fullness of
- 31:58His gospel, His priesthood and ordinances giving way to the
- 32:04blessings of His atonement, the Spirit of God, the privilege to
- 32:10engage in His work, and ultimately the gift of God's
- 32:15life are essential elements of living a Christ centered life.
- 32:22However, one may be more influenced by the next
- 32:26assignment meeting, the next service project, or the next
- 32:31activity or other church responsibility than looking unto
- 32:35Christ in every thought, remembering Him always, and
- 32:42doing all things in His name. He is the Lord God.
- 32:49Let us take His name and always remember Him to keep His
- 32:54commandments and build up His Kingdom, that we may always have
- 33:00His Spirit to be with us. Finally, to become like the Lord
- 33:10is more than worthiness. When we refer to Christ, we most
- 33:17commonly use the title Savior, and there is of course nothing
- 33:24wrong with that. He is the Savior and Redeemer of
- 33:30all mankind. That is at the very heart of who
- 33:35He is and what He did for us, but it is not the whole of it.
- 33:43He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end and every
- 33:48good thing in between. Although He refers to Himself as
- 33:55the Bread of Life, the light of the world, the Good Shepherd,
- 34:01the Way, the Truth and the Life, and so on, he didn't use the
- 34:05term of Savior or Redeemer to describe himself as recorded in
- 34:12the Gospels of the New Testament.
- 34:15This is not piling on titles and accolades, but remembering He
- 34:21did and does much more for us than atone for our sins.
- 34:29The immeasurable greatness of the Atonement should not obscure
- 34:35all else He did and is. Salvation is in the name of
- 34:44Jesus Christ, which is Christ as a whole, the sum of His parts.
- 34:53Salvation is not in the Atonement alone, or Savior, or
- 35:00Redeemer, or Bread of Life, Light of the World, Prince of
- 35:03Peace, Advocate, or any other name.
- 35:08Rather, salvation as is in the name of Jesus Christ, all of
- 35:15Him, the sum total, all He did, and all He does for us all.
- 35:24He is every part of Him. President Russell M Nelson
- 35:31summed up the role of Christ as Savior and the way when he
- 35:35simply said our Savior is the divine exemplar who marked the
- 35:42path that we are to follow. Jesus Christ not only came to
- 35:48atone for our sins, He also came to show us the way.
- 35:54He is not only the Savior, but also the way the consequences of
- 36:00following Christ are more than only becoming clean.
- 36:06To become like the Lord is more than worthiness.
- 36:09It is to incorporate into your being His qualities, all of
- 36:16them. All the qualities of godliness,
- 36:20not just purity. When we speak of repentance and
- 36:25forgiveness, we often say the Lord's forgiveness is complete.
- 36:29It washes away or remits our sins.
- 36:34Though our sins may be a scarlet, they may be as white as
- 36:38snow. If we repent, all of that is
- 36:42true, foundationally true. We also say our sins are washed
- 36:49away, forgiven as though they never occurred.
- 36:53But here we must be careful. That statement, though true in a
- 36:59way, gives rise to a serious misunderstanding.
- 37:04It is true if we repent, we are washed clean and made worthy
- 37:09again because of Christ's intervention on our behalf,
- 37:13which He can do having a tone for our sins.
- 37:19It is also true we may be worthy again to have God's Spirit, but
- 37:23it is not true. It is not true that forgiveness
- 37:28makes everything else all better.
- 37:33Damaged reputation, self esteem, and consequently one's ability
- 37:40to exercise faith are not necessarily restored even with
- 37:46forgiveness. Forgiveness is not forgetting,
- 37:51and the more there is to forget, the more difficult it is to
- 37:55believe in one's worthiness or recover a good reputation, or
- 38:00for others to forgive us. Forgiveness does not restore
- 38:05broken trust and damaged relationships resulting from
- 38:10sin. If a divorce follows, and if and
- 38:14a family is destroyed or a child is born out of wedlock, God's
- 38:20forgiveness of the sins giving rise to those consequences
- 38:24doesn't change any of that. The collateral damage remains.
- 38:31Without the atonement of Jesus Christ, there would be.
- 38:35Now listen to this. Without the atonement of Jesus
- 38:39Christ, there would be no hope for anyone.
- 38:46Chaos, darkness and death would prevail.
- 38:51But it is folly to believe every consequence of sin is absolved
- 38:57because of God's forgiveness. That reality is in part the
- 39:04awfulness of sin. Elder BH Roberts said this.
- 39:10The severity of the Atonement should impress men with the fact
- 39:14that we live in a world of stern realities, that human actions
- 39:23draw with them tremendous consequences that may not be
- 39:28easily set aside if the actions in which they have their origin
- 39:33are wrong. We do live in a world of stern
- 39:42realities, and there can be tremendous consequences that
- 39:49flow from sin that may not be easily set aside even with
- 39:55repentance and forgiveness. Sin, for example, rarely effects
- 40:02only the Sinner. There is almost always
- 40:06collateral damage. A woman commits adultery and her
- 40:11husband is devastated. He does not forgive her and a
- 40:16divorce ensues. They both repent, she of her
- 40:22infidelity and he of his refusal to forgive.
- 40:27Let's assume they are both forgiven and made clean before
- 40:30God through the atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 40:34As glorious as redemption is, certain collateral consequences
- 40:40remain. They are a part both remarried
- 40:46and their children don't have their mother and father in their
- 40:50home. A man becomes involved with
- 40:55pornography and eventually loses his job, his wife and family.
- 41:00He commits A felony, serves time in prison, and is registered as
- 41:05a sex offender. Eventually he changes the
- 41:10direction of his life. He gets on course and he
- 41:14repents. He may well have been forgiven
- 41:18of all his sins, made clean and worthy through the atonement of
- 41:22Christ, but he still must deal with a broken family and a
- 41:27criminal record. Nothing in this life will change
- 41:32those facts. Another man was unfaithful to
- 41:36his wife many years ago. She was unwilling to forgive.
- 41:42He lost his membership in the church and although he repented
- 41:46and was rebaptized, he remained inactive in the church for many
- 41:51years because of his guilt and the bitter feelings of his wife.
- 41:59She has since forgiven him and they are both active, worthy
- 42:02members of the church, but all their children are inactive in
- 42:08the church. When we are forgiven, God's
- 42:14forgiveness does not instill automatically within us all the
- 42:19strength and power, all the character and knowledge, all the
- 42:24trust and good name, all the confidence and faith that could
- 42:29have otherwise been ours had we been obedient in the 1st place.
- 42:35It also does not resolve, as I said, all of the collateral
- 42:40damage. The idea of play now and pay
- 42:46later or rebel now and repent later is a common idea, but a
- 42:52terrible, terribly bad one. Another man said.
- 42:58I convinced myself I would be able to cease sexual sins when I
- 43:03wanted to repent of the transgressions committed.
- 43:09He was wrong. That mentality would have merit
- 43:15if the only issue were worthiness and if you could
- 43:18always repent and be forgiven. But the issue is not simply are
- 43:22you worthy, rather who are you and who are you becoming?
- 43:30Everything you do and experience plays into that.
- 43:35Forgiveness stops the backward slight of sin, but it does not
- 43:40propel you forward to where you would have been had you never
- 43:44sinned in the beginning. There is nothing in Scripture to
- 43:48suggest forgiveness is a substitute for righteousness so
- 43:53as to instill immediately and magically within you all that
- 43:57you would have otherwise become had you chosen more wisely to
- 44:01begin with. As Jacob said, all remember the
- 44:06awfulness and transgressing against that holy God, and also
- 44:12the awfulness of yielding to the enticing of that cunning one.
- 44:18Remember, he said, to be carnally minded is death, To be
- 44:23spiritually minded is life eternal.
- 44:28Remember, we must remember the awfulness of sin.
- 44:36You may leave, live a life of deceit, for example, and later
- 44:42repent, but neither repentance nor forgiveness will make of you
- 44:48an honest person. Redemption will not instill in
- 44:53your soul that godly quality we call integrity.
- 44:59You may repent of a lifetime of impatience and temper and be
- 45:03forgiven, but forgiveness will not make of you a patient and
- 45:07temperate person. Character is forged one choice
- 45:12at a time, choosing to follow Christ and and not only because
- 45:20God Forgives your sins. There is nothing of greater
- 45:24importance in all eternity than the atonement of Jesus Christ
- 45:31except for possibly obedience in the 1st place.
- 45:38When God declared the purpose for the creation of the earth,
- 45:42he didn't say we will prove them herewith to see if they will
- 45:46repent. Rather He said, And we will
- 45:51prove them here with to see if they will do all things
- 45:57whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them.
- 46:06Jesus Christ is the Redeemer, He is the Savior, but He is also
- 46:17the way. He came not only to save us from
- 46:22our sins, He came also to show us how to act and what to do in
- 46:28the 1st place. We all make mistakes in this
- 46:35life. We all sin.
- 46:39We all fall terribly short. There would be no hope for any
- 46:46one of us without Christ the Redeemer, without Christ the
- 46:52Savior, without the crowning achievement of his infinite
- 46:58Atonement. But we can't sit on our hands
- 47:03thinking all will be well in the end when we repent.
- 47:09That is a false and vain and foolish doctrine.
- 47:15We must do our part now, choose better and better, until we
- 47:23learn to choose best before the night of darkness wherein there
- 47:29can be no labor performed. The supreme expression of
- 47:36intelligence, the crowning achievement of every rational
- 47:40being, is to choose best, to make choices that will produce
- 47:47change and growth within us, to become more like the Lord Jesus
- 47:53Christ and our Heavenly Father. To choose best is to follow
- 48:00Christ. Choose best, choose God our
- 48:06Father and his Son Jesus Christ. Thank you for joining me.
- 48:18In the next episode 14, we will consider whether there is
- 48:21something you can do that will make everything else better.
- 48:28That can also be done while doing everything else and not at
- 48:31the exclusion of everything else.
- 48:34Because there is one thing. I hope you will join me then to
- 48:40discover what is the one thing.
