- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Hello, and welcome back to Chartered Accountants Global Update, the podcast that keeps you current on the stories shaping our profession worldwide.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: This is season two, episode four.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Today we've got three stories that all circle around the same big idea: trust.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Who we trust, how we earn it, and what it takes to keep it as our profession changes.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about artificial intelligence and where it fits into a chartered accountant's ethical obligations.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: We'll look at a new sustainability playbook from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: And we'll close with a conference bringing sustainability controllers together to solve some very real, very practical problems.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Let's get into it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Let's start with artificial intelligence because it's the conversation that won't quiet down, and for good reason.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Chartered Accountants Worldwide has just published a paper on AI and trust in the profession, and it makes a point worth sitting with.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: No matter how sophisticated the tool, responsibility for professional work always rests with the chartered accountant.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: That doesn't change because a model produced the first draft.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: The paper lays out five core messages.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Human accountability is non-negotiable.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Professional skepticism has to stay sharp because AI outputs can look polished and authoritative while still being wrong, biased, or missing something important.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: AI brings its own set of trust risks, things like accountability gaps and limited explainability.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Governance around AI adoption needs to be treated as an ethics question, not just a technology decision.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: And cybersecurity and transparency underpin all of it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: The paper doesn't stop at principles either.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: It works through 11 specific risk areas, everything from automation bias and data privacy to the reputational damage that follows when an uncaught AI error makes it out the door.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: And it gives practitioners a practical framework, a set of questions across areas like ethics, risk, data handling, and quality control to help firms think this through before they adopt a tool, not after.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: The takeaway is fairly simple.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: AI can make us faster and sharper.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: But it doesn't replace judgment, and it doesn't replace the ethical backbone of this profession.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: That's on us, and it always will be.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: From AI, let's shift to sustainability, starting with some good news out of Australia and New Zealand.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand has released a sustainability playbook, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a practical, step-by-step resource to help chartered accountants guide organizations through climate and sustainability reporting.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: It starts with the fundamentals, stakeholder mapping, materiality assessments, understanding your risks and your opportunities, and it walks through building a strategy from there, setting targets, getting your data processes right, and embedding sustainability into how an organization actually operates day to day, not just how it reports.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: It also goes further than the numbers, touching on inclusive workplace practices, mental health support, and mentoring.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: A good reminder that sustainability isn't only environmental, it's organizational too.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: The reasoning behind it is worth repeating.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Chartered accountants play a vital role in producing decision-useful sustainability disclosures and in assuring that information because investors and stakeholders are relying on it.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: As sustainability reporting becomes less optional and more expected, a clear playbook like this gives practitioners a real head start, whether they're advising a client or working inside an organization trying to get this right.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: And that leads nicely into our last story, because if the playbook is the how, this next one is where you go to compare notes.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: The ESG and Sustainability Controllers Conference 2026 runs from September 15th to 17th, organized by A4S, that's accounting for sustainability in partnership with the Center for Impact at UCLA Anderson.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: What stands out about this one is the framing.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: It isn't another conference full of theory.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: It's built specifically for finance leaders and controllers, who are in the thick of ESG and sustainability reporting right now, and it's designed around real-world hurdles and best practices, not abstractions.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Sessions will cover getting your organizational structure right for ESG governance, sharpening materiality assessments, building solid data controls, communicating ESG risk to executives in a way that actually lands, and building financial models that connect sustainability directly to business impact.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: If you're a controller, wrestling with any of that, and let's be honest, most of us are wrestling with at least one of those, it's worth a look.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Registration is open now through the A4S website, and we'll drop a link in the show notes.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: So that's three stories, one thread.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: AI is reshaping how we work, but it can't reshape our accountability.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Sustainability reporting is maturing fast, and resources like these help the profession keep pace.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: And events like the ESG Controllers Conference are where the practical work of figuring this out together actually happens.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: That's it for this episode of Chartered Accountants Global Update.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening, and we'll catch you next time.
