- 12:09you for the pair pair part? What is it? Why? I hate
- 12:13to bother you in this Jordan? But the party in two all nine has
- 12:16been complaining about the person I haven't been in the eyes. He claims he
- 12:20hurt someone hearing he's mistaken there's been absolutely nobody here. But it was one
- 12:39one of those cream one of those bells that now and then one. It
- 12:50was just what mm hmm, the first time I've learned the fail mister Malone.
- 13:00Ah, I know it, I know it. I beg your pardoner.
- 13:03I was afraid the charm had been broken. You see, every time
- 13:07I walk in here singing that tune, I find a client. How fortunate
- 13:11for you? You know that's a matter of opinion. You're Victor Conry,
- 13:16don't they that's right for you? Won't think I'm presumptuous if I ask how
- 13:20you got in here. I got tired of waiting outside, so I use
- 13:24these skeleton keys. Ah An honest man. Don't mind me taking the liberty
- 13:31here, not at all. No. I want everyone to feel that Malone's
- 13:33office is their home. What's on your mind? Conray, have you seen
- 13:37this attractive brunette splain in hotel room. Rita Jordan, aged twenty nine,
- 13:46was they're holding my daughter for the murder Your daughter, missus Janet Moore.
- 13:50I'd like you to represent her, and of course she's innocent. Of course,
- 13:56how could Janet have killed Rita when I did? That's right? When
- 14:00you did, I seem to have amazed you, mister Malone. Perhaps you
- 14:05can do the same to the police. Shall we go before returning to the
- 14:22amazing mister Malerne. A few words from your announcer, and now back to
- 14:31the amazing mister Malerne. It must go to prove something or other. Maybe
- 14:39it's the luck of the Irish, but how many lawyers can walk in their
- 14:43offices and find a self confessed killer waiting for him? Two minutes later,
- 14:46Conrad and I were in our cab on our way to police headquarters. I
- 14:50just couldn't wait to see Lieutenant Brooks's face. I bet myself five bucks that
- 14:56I could predict his opening line. And you want to know something, I
- 15:00won If it doesn't very amazing, mister Malone, Well that's five dollars I
- 15:05owe myself. I knew you were going to say that, and far be
- 15:07it for me to disappoint you. You know, mister conraid Ah sure.
- 15:11My brother in law is one of his best customers. He says he'd rather
- 15:15borrow money from Conrad than from a bank. Please thank him for me.
- 15:18I'll be glad to what's the matter with your arm? That's another story?
- 15:22But why not tell it now? I haven't heard a good one in years.
- 15:26You must be hanging around with a dull crowd. Now I'm alone.
- 15:30That's no way to talk about yourself. Whatever happened to the typical dumb cup
- 15:33we used to hear about? They've all gone in the radio? What's on
- 15:37your mind? I represent Janet Moore. Janet Moore, the girl you're holding
- 15:41for the Rita Jordan kill. Her husband retained? No, oh, mister
- 15:45conried? Did he's a father? Wow? If you're representing her, it
- 15:48stands the reason she's ellen. Well, of course you won't think me bold
- 15:54if I asked who did kill Rita Jordan? I did what? And I
- 15:58don't regret it was destroying my daughter's happiness. Wow, that's very noble of
- 16:03you, Conrad, I tell you I killed her, Lieutenant, What did
- 16:06you do with a knife? Knife? You certainly didn't slit her throat with
- 16:10one of Malone's sharp jokes. I disposed of it in the customary fashion.
- 16:15And what is the customary fashion? I threw it down the sewer. Well,
- 16:19what do you say, lieutenant, I say, you better get yourself
- 16:22another confession. Why, there are a couple of things wrong with Conraid's.
- 16:27First of all, we have a signed confession from his daughter. She made
- 16:30it to protect me. Let's see it, Lieutenant. I can assure you
- 16:34it's in perfect order. I tell you I kill this Jordan, not with
- 16:38a knife. You didn't. According to this rad I was shot to death.
- 16:42Yeah. Wow, it's been nice seeing you alone. Dropping again when
- 16:47you get another confession, I just love hearing. Yes, I'm I'm looking
- 17:03for her anymore. I'm sorry, mister, I'm very busy. Oh this
- 17:06won't take long. Are you going to get out of here? Relaxed,
- 17:08Ernie. My name's John J. Malone. I don't care. Did you
- 17:14say Malone? I must have. Well, I'm glad to meet you alone.
- 17:17I was just on my way over to your office. I don't think
- 17:18you would have found me there to sit down. Please, thank you?
- 17:22Would you like nothing but talk? My wife didn't kill Reata, mister Malone.
- 17:27She signed a confession. She did it to shield me. Do you
- 17:30need it? Yes? I killed Reata once again. Please, I killed
- 17:37him alone. I was out of my mind about She got better still from
- 17:41my father in law. He caught me. Is that how Conrad was shut?
- 17:45Yes? I must have been crazy. Then when I went over to
- 17:48see Reata, her husband was there, and can't you see what happened?
- 17:52Look at my face? Yeah, I've been admiring it since I walked in.
- 17:55We'll go on. There's nothing more to tell. When I came to
- 17:59Dan was gone. Apparently he hadn't searched me because I still had the gun.
- 18:03I do tell my father in law and you use it on reader.
- 18:06Yes, you still got the gun? Yes here, Wow, I think
- 18:15this ought to do it? All right? Anny, let's go till you
- 18:26like your shape? Really close? Nah, just once, so lightly,
- 18:30Joe, you just delivered to me. I'm couldn't make you really pretty?
- 18:38Why don't you take the cuddy his throat? Uh huh wow. If it
- 18:42is, it certainly is. So you're loafing on the city's time. Now,
- 18:47Please don't snitch on him alone. I swear I'll never do it again.
- 18:51All right, Joel, let's get started. Listen, you clown.
- 18:52You know who this man is? Yeah, Joel the Bartow, I mean
- 18:56him? Oh? Hello, more, I didn't see you, all right,
- 19:00Annie, break it to indiency. My wife didn't kill Rita, Lieutenant.
- 19:04I know I was her father, and we've been all through that.
- 19:07Come on, Joe, could you still in the back a little bit?
- 19:11I killed a lieutenant? What and so? Is this another one of your
- 19:17gags? Malone? Don't talk like a chump just because you are one showing
- 19:21the gun. Honey, Yeah, this is your respectable place. It's all
- 19:26right, Joe. So this is the murder Weber had, right, lieutenant?
- 19:30He bought it Conry with a too funny. Doesn't seem to have been
- 19:34fired recently. Oh, he explained that to me. He cleaned it because
- 19:38he put it away. There was one thing I'd like mister Moore to explain.
- 19:44This is a thirty two cole automatic. So so Rita was killed with
- 19:47a German logo? She won? You heard me? Now? How would
- 19:51you like to use this gun on yourself? Or would you prefer one of
- 19:55Joe's razors? Oh? Give him a nice doll? Very easy. I'm
- 20:06coming. Well, will you look who's here? I guess you remember me,
- 20:15Jordan's Well. I got a feeling I read into you somewhere and I
- 20:18watched your name. No, don't tell me it's more, isn't it,
- 20:22sure, Erniemore, that's very funny. I'd ask you to sit down,
- 20:27Ernie but I got a feeling you're not going to be here, Love,
- 20:30that's in your mind, your wife's murder. I've been thinking about it too.
- 20:36I don't know how I'm going to get along with that. Reading the
- 20:37old Homestead won't be the same without all those empty bottles. The police claim
- 20:41my wife kidder. Yeah, I heard it on the radio. Understand,
- 20:45she made a confession. She didn't do it, Jordan, she confessed to
- 20:48protect me. That was real nice of her. You killed her. I
- 20:53don't know what you're saying. Why, yes, I do? You're going
- 20:56with me or a lawyer? Who's a lawyer? John Jaymon? And why
- 21:00would I want to see him for to tell him the whole story? Obviously
- 21:04you're a boy who don't learn from experience. Oh you think so well?
- 21:08You forgot the lesson I told you. It's just lucky for you. I'm
- 21:11a patient man, so I don't mind teaching you again. Nearly it's time
- 21:18to call a class to order. Hey, txy Lexy, I give you
- 21:36a little feller. Oh thanks. I wouldn't want to trouble you, nor
- 21:38trouble at all. Mister Malone. You seem to know me well. You're
- 21:44a famous new York Landmark like the fish markets. Hey, that's pretty good.
- 21:48I wish I had come back here. Oh wow, that wouldn't be
- 21:55a gun in your pocket. I guess it would get in Okay, all
- 22:02right, now, mind us some nice quiet spot where we can talk.
- 22:10No hydramatic Alison fussy when he stealers. I see you're Leo Jordan. Aren't
- 22:17you told of that? I recognize it from the description. I was awfully
- 22:19sorry to hear about your wife. You've any ideas who killed it? No,
- 22:23but I understand you had. And where do you understand that from?
- 22:26And he says you're fixing the pin of wrap on me. Well, I
- 22:32hadn't considered it before. Now that you have, I think it's a great
- 22:34idea. So you were going to frame me? Oh say you really know
- 22:40me, don't you? I know? Pretty like you. Let me give
- 22:42you a little tip along you've out of my head, and if I don't,
- 22:47then you've got to expect me to get into your merely goes to show
- 22:59you never see yourself as others see All along. I was under the impression
- 23:03I was just a shade under six foot when I came to this trip.
- 23:06I was at least two inches taller. It might have been that lump on
- 23:10my head that made the difference. Ah, this is a peachy one along,
- 23:14So round, so firm, Get you hands off? Am I hurting
- 23:21you here? Hey? Where did you come from? But that matter?
- 23:26Where did I come from? Which question you want me to answer? First?
- 23:32Say? Where am I near the zoo? Somebody must have dropped you
- 23:36off head first? When I heard about it, naturally I dashed down.
- 23:40Oh thank you? Oh, don't thank me, counselor this sort of thing
- 23:42doesn't happen often enough to suit me. Oh did at this time? Leo
- 23:48Jordan? Wait this? Why? And we thought I was trying to frame
- 23:52him for a murder? Were it? Charlotte Tennant? That's the way I
- 23:56operate. Oh, so that's the secret of your success. Look, Brooks,
- 24:00I didn't kill Rita Jordan's don't tell me you got another confession? I
- 24:03couldn't stand it. Well, this is Moore is innocent, and who done
- 24:07it? I don't know. So let's get all our suspects together and play
- 24:10blind man's butt. And if that doesn't work, I can always take Jordan's
- 24:14idea and frame somebody. Hand me my head and let's go all right,
- 24:33barr inshide. Hello Janet, Oh honey, what have they done to this?
- 24:42Nothing? Honey? Oh, this is a very touching scene. You
- 24:48keep out of this, Jordan's I wish I could, but if her name
- 24:49alone insisted on dragging me in? Did someone mention my name? Yeah?
- 24:55Hello Leo? Have you being here? Alarm? Hol all right, assessment,
- 25:00open them up? Will you do the honor? Mister Malone, try
- 25:07and stop me? Hi, Conrad, Sorry, we had to do this.
- 25:14That's perfectly all rightful. I knew you'd take it like the Grand Trooper.
- 25:18You are well, missus Moore, and gentlemen not to keep you in
- 25:22suspense. We are gabled here tonight. Who determine who killed our beloved sister
- 25:27Rita? George? Now this case was complicated by one thing. We had
- 25:34three confessions, which is who overpowers? Obviously someone was lying. I wasn't
- 25:41me? You try framing me or we don't have to. Jordan? Why
- 25:45you You're no problem at all. You're the only one in our little cast
- 25:49who didn't confess, so obviously you didn't kill readers. Now look, oh
- 25:55no, I'm sure, and he has no motive if he wanted to get
- 25:59rid of his wife or he had to do was walk off. Well,
- 26:00Jennet didn't kill her, Yes, I didn't know. I'll never believe that.
- 26:03No, No, Ernie, you should, especially when you know the
- 26:08truit. But are you? Yes? I am? You kill Reeder?
- 26:12Jordan? Listen, God, don't complain, Ernie. I especially staged this
- 26:17little scene down here so you wouldn't have to do any more traveling. So
- 26:21try and show a little more appreciation. Huh. It was just one thing,
- 26:33just one of crazy thing and him along. What's bothering you? Little
- 26:40man? Well? I can see why Ernie kill Rider? Can you goes
- 26:44the one? Like he said? But what gets me is why I confess.
- 26:52Wow, that was a smart move Brooks Anderni. He knew sooner or
- 26:55later we'd get around to him, so he beat us to the punch and
- 26:57offered himself as a sacrifice. You notice he gave himself an out. I
- 27:02mean the business of the gun, Yeah, yeah, disposed of the lugar
- 27:04used on Rita and got the cold automatic. He knew the minute you saw
- 27:08it you'd be positive he was innocn Oh, what sure? And once he
- 27:14gave him a clean bill of health, you'd probably never bother him again.
- 27:18You'd think here was a man who was just trying to protect his little wife,
- 27:22but you saw all throw his dark my farious lot. Well, isn't
- 27:26that what you'd expect of me? Of course, after all, aren't you
- 27:30the amazing Malone. Let's have my compleet, Billy, the amazing mister Malone
- 27:36much better. Well, now it's my turn to amaze you. How we've
- 27:38been coming into this joint every week for years, and always you grabbed the
- 27:44checks. But tonight, tonight's different. I'm gonna pay my own. Good
- 27:48night Malone and now once again back to the amazing mister Malone. Well that's
- 28:11it for now, but I'll be back at the same time next week,
- 28:14and I trust you will be too. Still, and I'll say good night.
- 28:19The Amazing Mister Malone is a Grace Gibson radio production starring John Saul as
- 28:25John J. Malone and directed by Lawrence A Sister. Welcome back. A
- 28:42pretty interesting episode here, and I think one of the best of the series.
- 28:51By the way, we don't know on the first two when they originally
- 28:55aired in the United States series, but we do know that the last two
- 29:03actually aired back to back. The Dude and they All Confessed aired on August
- 29:08ninth and August sixteenth of nineteen forty seven, and that was in the United
- 29:17States, And that was back when the show was called Murder and Mister Malone.
- 29:23So even when it was called Murder and Mister Malone, I think the
- 29:26trend in the show was towards changing the name to the amazing Mister Malone.
- 29:33Now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and Tim said the Irony of
- 29:38Life. As I listened to episode ten forty eight, I heard the comment
- 29:41that I posted. One thing I said was that I listened to many shows
- 29:45more than once. This time I noticed that one of the bad guys is
- 29:49Jack Reid. The guy from Rhode Island has comments read with Jack Reid in
- 29:53the episode. Jack Reid is a long serving US Senator still enjoying in Let's
- 30:00hours of enjoyment with the show. Each show has at least one little jewel,
- 30:06which makes it worth thirty minutes to find out. So I listen as
- 30:08I walk for my health. Well, thanks so much, Tim, and
- 30:11I appreciate you. Appreciate you listening. The thing that can sometimes be interesting
- 30:22is some of these names will have significance. But that's not the biggest political
- 30:30significance. Actually, for a while we had a listener who was regularly posting
- 30:34on Facebook whose name was Charlie Christ who was at that time the governor of
- 30:41Florida and a pretty controversial political figure. So whenever I read his comments,
- 30:48I always said, you know Charlie and Florida writes, rather than saying his
- 30:52last name. And I try to avoid saying last names usually if I said
- 30:56it is a bit of a slip, not a big thing, you by.
- 31:00Thanks for the comments. Tim, All right, well, that will
- 31:03do it for today. We will be back on Wednesday as Johnny Dowler continues
- 31:10the Laughing Matter, and next week we'll be back with mister Chameleon. In
- 31:14the meantime, I do want to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and I will
- 31:18talk to you tomorrow. Andrew comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net
