Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi everyone, my name is Mike Joseph. I'm from the
- 0:03Speaker 1: band Ion Sky from Melbourne and we are a hard
- 0:07Speaker 1: rock slash metal band here in Australia doing the best
- 0:12Speaker 1: to fly the flag of rock and metal.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Fantastic mate, and fly the flag you do very well indeed.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Thank you, it's a pleasure, my pleasure.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So Ion Sky have premiered your new song, The Dirt
- 0:25Speaker 2: Will Humble You Through Heavy, marking the first release from
- 0:28Speaker 2: your upcoming debut.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Album, Before We Die.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So the cycle starts again, bro.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The cycle does start again. And we're quite, as I
- 0:38Speaker 1: said earlier, just before we started the interview, it's been
- 0:42Speaker 1: a long time between drinks, but we're glad that this
- 0:45Speaker 1: drink is now here. And we're really excited to, get
- 0:49Speaker 1: these songs out into the world and out to our
- 0:52Speaker 1: fans because we've got a bit to say. And I
- 0:57Speaker 1: think that the music is on par with what you'd
- 1:02Speaker 1: hear overseas, anywhere worldwide on a world-class level. And I
- 1:06Speaker 1: don't say that with arrogance. I say that with genuine heart.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You know, a lot's gone into it and into its
- 1:13Speaker 1: sonics and its content and subject and all that sort
- 1:16Speaker 1: of thing.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, cool. So tell us a bit more about The
- 1:19Speaker 2: Dirt Will Humble You from a musical.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Point of view, mate. What are you going for this
- 1:22Speaker 1: time around? Right. So The Dirt Will Humble You is
- 1:27Speaker 1: by far one of the, if not the, heaviest song
- 1:30Speaker 1: on this album. Initially, the song wasn't going to be
- 1:35Speaker 1: on the album. It just, we'd already written 14 songs
- 1:39Speaker 1: and we were ready to record drums and get into
- 1:42Speaker 1: the studio. We were booked into the studio the next
- 1:44Speaker 1: week and then It just came to me like I
- 1:48Speaker 1: was I was sitting on the couch and the lyrics
- 1:51Speaker 1: and the words the dirt will come will humble you
- 1:55Speaker 1: it came to me and That was it. It was
- 1:58Speaker 1: just a flow-on effect and then the riff came and
- 2:00Speaker 1: then it was just it's interesting how sometimes a song
- 2:03Speaker 1: comes to an artist or to anybody really it just
- 2:07Speaker 1: flowed and I was in a in a kind of
- 2:10Speaker 1: interesting headspace at that time a few things had happened
- 2:13Speaker 1: and a couple of years leading up to it. But
- 2:16Speaker 1: then this one day it came to me and I
- 2:19Speaker 1: was like, geez, there's something there. So I recorded it
- 2:22Speaker 1: on my phone and I knew it was going to
- 2:24Speaker 1: be heavy. And cause I was just, I was aiming
- 2:28Speaker 1: to write songs, not intentionally, but I wanted to write
- 2:32Speaker 1: songs that were on the heavier kind of realm. And
- 2:36Speaker 1: then this one came into the mix. And when I
- 2:39Speaker 1: showed the guys, they all, they all loved it. Mark,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the guitarist was like, well, it's just one note all
- 2:46Speaker 1: the way through. And I said, yeah, that's brilliant. And
- 2:51Speaker 1: I said, isn't it brilliant? It's just one note all
- 2:54Speaker 1: the way through. And, but it worked because it's got
- 2:57Speaker 1: this big drone that happens with the guitars and, um,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the song is heavy. Um, you know, I mean, you've
- 3:03Speaker 1: heard it. It's, um, it from all the people that
- 3:09Speaker 1: we've spoken to, they have said that it's, um, It's
- 3:13Speaker 1: one of our heaviest songs that they've heard compared to
- 3:16Speaker 1: like Devil's Corner, which was on the first EP. This
- 3:18Speaker 1: is even heavier. And we've played it live. We've tested
- 3:23Speaker 1: it live. That's the thing. We have tested it live.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And I can tell you the first time that we
- 3:28Speaker 1: played this song, it was at a soundcheck here in
- 3:30Speaker 1: Melbourne and we played it and the band that we
- 3:33Speaker 1: were supporting, they all just stopped when we did it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: We'd not played it before. I said, why don't we
- 3:39Speaker 1: just give this a go at soundcheck, guys? and we
- 3:42Speaker 1: did this song and literally everyone in the room, cause
- 3:45Speaker 1: you know what people like before a show, I just
- 3:49Speaker 1: saw all these heads just turn and I'm like, ah, okay,
- 3:53Speaker 1: this song has got something on it. And then the
- 3:54Speaker 1: guitarist from one of the other bands, he goes, Oh
- 3:57Speaker 1: my God, that is disgustingly heavy.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Like melodic. That is, that's going to rip a new
- 4:04Speaker 1: asshole in this place tonight. And I said, yep. So
- 4:07Speaker 1: it is, it is being tried and tested. Um, And
- 4:12Speaker 1: it is a heavy song on the heavier sort of
- 4:15Speaker 1: realm for us. Definitely. Yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 2: The title is obviously a play on words and a
- 4:20Speaker 2: damn good one of that, but what does it mean?
- 4:25Speaker 1: The dirt will humble you. Well, yeah, Chris, I mean,
- 4:27Speaker 1: that's exactly what it means. It's like, if you look
- 4:31Speaker 1: at it on its subject, it's yeah, it does mean
- 4:36Speaker 1: that like one day in this physical realm that we
- 4:40Speaker 1: live in on earth, One day, without fail, it's inevitable
- 4:46Speaker 1: that we will turn to dust or dirt and we'll
- 4:47Speaker 1: put in the dirt. That came from, there was a
- 4:52Speaker 1: few things happening in my life at that point and
- 4:54Speaker 1: a few things happening around the world. I don't want
- 4:56Speaker 1: to get political or anything like that, but there was
- 4:58Speaker 1: a few things happening and I was just like, you
- 5:01Speaker 1: know what? Some people just sit on this pedestal and
- 5:05Speaker 1: they think that they're above everybody and they can crunch
- 5:08Speaker 1: on people and put people down and squash people and
- 5:12Speaker 1: do all this stuff to people, whether it's in a
- 5:14Speaker 1: workplace or, you know, on a high level, whatever it is.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And then what happens is what they don't realize is,
- 5:23Speaker 1: or maybe they do realize, but what I don't think
- 5:25Speaker 1: that they realize is that one day that's not going
- 5:29Speaker 1: to matter. So no matter how powerful you are, how
- 5:33Speaker 1: much you accumulate, how much money you have, how popular
- 5:37Speaker 1: you think you are, any of that sort of stuff,
- 5:40Speaker 1: one day, the dirt is going to humble you. So
- 5:44Speaker 1: is there any point to being obnoxious or, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: is there any point to having this power that you
- 5:52Speaker 1: don't use for good? And that's where it sort of started.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The other side of it is that that's it in a,
- 6:00Speaker 1: in a general sense. It just, you know, I'm one
- 6:04Speaker 1: of these people, I try to do the best I
- 6:06Speaker 1: can for people if it's in a workplace or, any
- 6:09Speaker 1: sort of situation, I'm nice to everybody that I meet
- 6:11Speaker 1: up front. I'll give you all I am. And sometimes
- 6:15Speaker 1: when you do that and it's not respected or it's
- 6:18Speaker 1: not thought about in a nice way, or it's just
- 6:21Speaker 1: taken for granted, it does something to you inside. So
- 6:25Speaker 1: the song and the beautiful thing is that we can,
- 6:28Speaker 1: through music, release any sort of angst or anything like
- 6:32Speaker 1: that through the music. And I tend to, that's a
- 6:35Speaker 1: good vessel for me to, you know, it's cathartic. So...
- 6:39Speaker 1: That's one side of it. The other side of it
- 6:42Speaker 1: was years ago, and this was the part B of
- 6:45Speaker 1: the subject. I used to work in a pretty heavy trade.
- 6:50Speaker 1: So I used to build massive retaining walls that used
- 6:52Speaker 1: to hold up, you know, tons and tons and tons
- 6:56Speaker 1: of dirt. And I remember we were working down at
- 6:59Speaker 1: the coast one day and we'd put up a retaining
- 7:02Speaker 1: wall and we were just, it was three and a
- 7:04Speaker 1: half meters high. So the dirt went for about 400 meters.
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the ocean with sand and dirt. And we'd put
- 7:12Speaker 1: up these pillars and we were putting in these concrete
- 7:14Speaker 1: blocks to hold up, it was a retaining wall. And
- 7:18Speaker 1: we'd put down the blocks that go up, they'll be
- 7:23Speaker 1: concrete pillars. We put those in, we turned around, went
- 7:27Speaker 1: to the other side, came back and where we were working,
- 7:30Speaker 1: no shit, about three ton of dirt just fell in
- 7:34Speaker 1: that spot. Now we call it, um, being at the right,
- 7:40Speaker 1: wrong place at the right time or not being there. We,
- 7:43Speaker 1: if we were working in that spot, yeah, we would
- 7:45Speaker 1: have got, we absolutely would have got buried alive. That
- 7:49Speaker 1: was part B of the song. So it's got a
- 7:52Speaker 1: couple of meanings. Um, sometimes happens with my songwriting. It
- 7:56Speaker 1: might be one thing, but then something else will channel in.
- 8:00Speaker 1: But yeah, that, that was, that was scary. And then
- 8:02Speaker 1: I was just like, nah, I can't do this. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: can't do this job anymore. Understandable.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Understandable completely. The press release says that The Dirt Will
- 8:14Speaker 2: Humble You offers a fresh insight into the next exciting
- 8:18Speaker 2: chapter of Ion Sky's music. Would you agree with that statement?
- 8:22Speaker 1: 100%. I agree with it. And again, it's not just
- 8:26Speaker 1: to toot our horn, but the songwriting's got better. The
- 8:30Speaker 1: songs have flourished, especially on this album. This album is
- 8:37Speaker 1: like it gives something for everyone on this album. If
- 8:40Speaker 1: you like really heavy stuff, there's the heavy stuff like
- 8:43Speaker 1: The Dirt Will Humble You. We've got ballads as well.
- 8:46Speaker 1: We've got songs that start with acoustic guitar that build,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you know, much the same as like, you know, something
- 8:53Speaker 1: that like Metallica will do or, you know, bands like that.
- 8:57Speaker 1: They've got songs that sometimes can start on acoustic and
- 9:01Speaker 1: eventually build up to crescendo into a full band. We've
- 9:05Speaker 1: got what some people would call generic radio songs on
- 9:10Speaker 1: this album as well. So there's a bit for everyone
- 9:13Speaker 1: on this album before we die. And it's really got everything.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And the good thing is everyone's had a chance to
- 9:21Speaker 1: write something on this album. So we've all collaborated as
- 9:25Speaker 1: a group, as a unit, to write these songs together.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So overall, how do you reckon the songs on Before
- 9:33Speaker 2: We Die are going to be different from on your
- 9:36Speaker 2: EP Regeneration?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Well, the first thing is the production level has raised in,
- 9:42Speaker 1: I definitely believe, and I definitely believe the production level
- 9:46Speaker 1: has gone up another level. We've had time to work
- 9:50Speaker 1: on sounds, learn from mistakes that we did in like
- 9:54Speaker 1: the first batch of recording, especially with drum recording. Now
- 9:57Speaker 1: we spent five days recording drums for this album, but
- 10:01Speaker 1: two of those days were getting sounds. Now you might
- 10:04Speaker 1: think that that sounds overkill and it probably could be
- 10:09Speaker 1: to some bands, but we just wanted to get the
- 10:11Speaker 1: tones right from the get-go so that when we brought
- 10:15Speaker 1: them into you know, editing and Pro Tools, we knew
- 10:19Speaker 1: what we were working with and what sound we wanted
- 10:22Speaker 1: to get. We also referenced, we had good references this
- 10:26Speaker 1: time around. Everyone had a reference of what they wanted
- 10:30Speaker 1: the drums to sound like, the guitars to sound like.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So we had a clear vision on sonically what it
- 10:35Speaker 1: was going to be. So I think it's definitely a
- 10:37Speaker 1: step up from the EP. And the EP sounded pretty good.
- 10:42Speaker 1: This album, Before We Die, is just a step up.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I think on all levels on the production level and
- 10:48Speaker 1: songwriting level. Yeah. We've, you know, we've been a band
- 10:51Speaker 1: for over six years now and we've, you know, like
- 10:56Speaker 1: what we do, we're all brothers. We, we, we love
- 10:59Speaker 1: fight and cry together. And that comes out in the songs,
- 11:06Speaker 1: which is really cool. I think, you know, I wish
- 11:08Speaker 1: we could do more of that all the time.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'll capture the magic in the bottle this time, mate,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and work on it from there.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yes. Now, I love the album cover.
- 11:18Speaker 2: As well, mate, which is represented behind me here, but
- 11:20Speaker 2: it's quite abstract, but there's something sinister and haunting about
- 11:24Speaker 2: it at the same time. Like, what's going on?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah, mate, it's exactly what you said. It is a
- 11:30Speaker 1: haunting image. It is sinister. It's all of the above. So, realistically,
- 11:38Speaker 1: the image was a photo that we took and then
- 11:42Speaker 1: we manipulated it.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So.
- 11:45Speaker 1: It was literally an old road sign that we saw
- 11:49Speaker 1: and it just sort of looked really cool and it
- 11:53Speaker 1: looked a little fucked up. And we're like, as soon
- 11:56Speaker 1: as we all saw it, because Jake took a photo
- 11:59Speaker 1: of it and he goes, guys, I've seen this thing
- 12:01Speaker 1: a few times. I don't know, what do you think?
- 12:02Speaker 1: And as soon as we saw it, we're all like,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I love that. I love that because it, and we've
- 12:08Speaker 1: manipulated it a little bit. So it's just a weathered,
- 12:12Speaker 1: sign basically but it looks like a face it looks like.
- 12:15Speaker 2: A yeah it looks like there's something going on like
- 12:17Speaker 2: subliminally in.
- 12:18Speaker 1: There it's it's quite captivating and i think that's one
- 12:21Speaker 1: of these things where it's like a bit of a
- 12:22Speaker 1: magic moment that we just were kind of like lucky
- 12:26Speaker 1: that well you know it caught the eye and it's
- 12:29Speaker 1: it's that sort of thing before before we die came
- 12:35Speaker 1: from the notion there's a lot of songs on this
- 12:37Speaker 1: album that i'm not gonna i guess they hone in
- 12:41Speaker 1: on the subject of death. And the other thing is too,
- 12:47Speaker 1: this album, we said, this is the last thing we
- 12:49Speaker 1: ever do. I'm not saying that we're not breaking up
- 12:51Speaker 1: or anything. We're not breaking up or anything like that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But if like something happened to one of us or
- 12:55Speaker 1: all of us, it's going to be the best thing
- 12:58Speaker 1: we can, what is the possible best thing we could
- 13:01Speaker 1: do before you die? And it kind of put the
- 13:03Speaker 1: pressure on us a little bit, because it was just like, well,
- 13:07Speaker 1: then we're going to make this fucking album epic. So yeah,
- 13:11Speaker 1: that was a massive thing. So the artwork ties in
- 13:16Speaker 1: with that dark, sinister thing that The Dirt has, that
- 13:20Speaker 1: Give Me Something has, that another song called Nevermore has.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But there's also some light that comes from it. It
- 13:27Speaker 1: was maybe a head or a life that was once
- 13:30Speaker 1: there and it's dwindling away. That's my kind of idea
- 13:36Speaker 1: with it. I'm sure some of the other boys have
- 13:38Speaker 1: a different feel on it, but That's what I saw.
- 13:41Speaker 1: It was just a really cool image, and it just
- 13:43Speaker 1: fit perfectly with the vibe of the name of the
- 13:46Speaker 1: album and the songs. It fits with all of them, really.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Hell yeah, brother. Musically, you guys straddle a few fences.
- 13:55Speaker 2: You've got modern hard rock mixed with metal.
- 13:57Speaker 1: There's grunge. There's melodic metal.
- 13:58Speaker 2: It's a style of music that makes you accessible to
- 14:01Speaker 2: radio airplay, but it's also got enough there to satisfy
- 14:03Speaker 2: people with slightly heavier taste in radio. Is that an
- 14:06Speaker 2: easy line to navigate, bro? Because I know metal fans
- 14:08Speaker 2: don't always... play well with the softer side of music
- 14:11Speaker 2: so you're sort of treading between two worlds.
- 14:13Speaker 1: There absolutely um so when we got the songs together
- 14:18Speaker 1: and after the dirt was um in the mix um
- 14:21Speaker 1: we had 15 songs and we they're all they're all
- 14:24Speaker 1: quite different some again heavier mid strength and then some
- 14:29Speaker 1: like lighter songs it is an interesting road and it
- 14:33Speaker 1: is an interesting thing to you know it Not one
- 14:37Speaker 1: song on the album sounds the same. And the only,
- 14:40Speaker 1: I think the defining factor with this album is my
- 14:42Speaker 1: voice ties it all together. And maybe some of the
- 14:45Speaker 1: melodic sort of changes tie it all together. But yeah,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I have to agree with you. Like, you know, if
- 14:52Speaker 1: you've got like a real metal head that likes just
- 14:54Speaker 1: heavy stuff and he hears a song, there's a song
- 14:56Speaker 1: on the album called Set Me Free, which is a
- 15:00Speaker 1: lot more sort of commercial. It's not pop. It's just
- 15:04Speaker 1: a good commercial song. radio song that you could probably
- 15:08Speaker 1: hear on a movie or on a soundtrack or something
- 15:11Speaker 1: like that. It wasn't intentionally written like that. So we
- 15:14Speaker 1: don't intentionally go, this song's for radio or this song's
- 15:18Speaker 1: for film or this song's for, you know, just the metalheads.
- 15:22Speaker 1: It's just, we brought the best songs to the table
- 15:26Speaker 1: because there was a few other songs as well that
- 15:27Speaker 1: didn't make it on the album. These were the songs
- 15:30Speaker 1: that just felt the best in terms of structure, lyrics
- 15:35Speaker 1: finished and you know, uh, solid songs and some that
- 15:39Speaker 1: we've tried and tested live as well. And, um, yes,
- 15:44Speaker 1: to answer your question, it, it, there's a bit for everyone. Um,
- 15:48Speaker 1: it shouldn't deter people who like really heavy stuff because,
- 15:52Speaker 1: you know, as I said before, there's, there's heavy bands,
- 15:55Speaker 1: like even like Slipknot, like you're wearing the t-shirt of Slipknot,
- 15:57Speaker 1: one of my favorite bands. Um, but you know, they've
- 16:00Speaker 1: got a song Snuff, you know, as acoustic or, you know, um,
- 16:06Speaker 1: They've got other songs that are probably more, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: toned down in terms of their sonic space and they're
- 16:15Speaker 1: not as heavy and, you know, the double kicks aren't going,
- 16:18Speaker 1: but you can still feel it's Corey's voice there that
- 16:22Speaker 1: ties it together. He's trying to say something. So I
- 16:25Speaker 1: would say it would appeal to metalheads, you know. I
- 16:30Speaker 1: think this band, and again, I'm not trying to turn
- 16:33Speaker 1: our horn, but I think it would appeal... to a
- 16:35Speaker 1: lot of people. Like if you, if, if, if someone
- 16:39Speaker 1: was to grab iron sky and hold up the iron
- 16:42Speaker 1: sky flag and show it in front of the world,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I think that it would be much the same as like,
- 16:49Speaker 1: you know, uh, uh, Lincoln park or something. I'm not
- 16:52Speaker 1: comparing us. They've got heavy stuff. They've got more commercial
- 16:57Speaker 1: stuff and then they've got, you know, softer stuff. So, um,
- 17:02Speaker 1: It's not done on purpose. I can definitely say that.
- 17:05Speaker 1: It's all been organic. But we, yeah, we definitely, I
- 17:08Speaker 1: think it's a good thing to have a bit of
- 17:10Speaker 1: difference on the album, you know. And I love that
- 17:13Speaker 1: our bass player, Matt, has contributed a few songs on
- 17:18Speaker 1: this album because, hey, it takes the pressure off me.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Good on you, Matt.
- 17:24Speaker 1: He's also got like a really, awesome songwriting skill. And
- 17:30Speaker 1: the songs that he's written are haunting, melodic. Yeah, I
- 17:35Speaker 1: can't wait for people to hear them.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, shit up, man. Now, I know you guys like
- 17:39Speaker 2: getting out there and playing your shit live, brother. So
- 17:41Speaker 2: you got any shows coming up?
- 17:43Speaker 1: You know what, Chris? As much as I'd like to
- 17:47Speaker 1: say we do, we don't at the moment. We are focusing,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we will play a show. We're going to do a
- 17:55Speaker 1: launch soon. yet to be announced. We're going to put
- 17:59Speaker 1: together a show. We're going to put, you know, we're
- 18:01Speaker 1: going to throw the kitchen sink at it. Like everything's
- 18:03Speaker 1: going to be in the show. We've got an amazing
- 18:06Speaker 1: lighting crew, amazing sound guy. We want to really create
- 18:09Speaker 1: a spectacle when people come to see us next. So
- 18:12Speaker 1: the show will be to be announced, but it will
- 18:16Speaker 1: hopefully be in 2026. If not, it'll be in early 2027. Yeah.
