- 0:25Speaker 2: Obviously, we're gonna to watch the film really closely because
- 0:28Speaker 2: you know, your gut reaction is obviously we want to
- 0:31Speaker 2: accomplish more, you know, as a as an offense, and
- 0:34Speaker 2: we have the unfortunate interception in the first half, we
- 0:36Speaker 2: have one in the red zone the second half or
- 0:38Speaker 2: we're driving and so yeah, we're gonning to watch this
- 0:41Speaker 2: film get better. I thought those guys had some really
- 0:43Speaker 2: good work throughout this entire week and obviously as a
- 0:47Speaker 2: team collectively, you know, we didn't take advantage of this
- 0:49Speaker 2: opportunity today.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That was Kellen Moore after the Saints lost to the Rams,
- 0:53Speaker 1: talking about his backup quarterbacks, so Zach Wilson and Spencer Ratler.
- 0:57Speaker 1: A day to forget for both. John Stinchcom was on
- 0:59Speaker 1: the call. Is good enough on us for a couple
- 1:01Speaker 1: of minutes. So great to have you, Batman. Thank you
- 1:02Speaker 1: for the time. How are you?
- 1:04Speaker 3: I'm great, Matt. Appreciate you having me man.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It's our pleasure, and we appreciate you squeezing us in.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We can start there with the quarterbacks. I think we're
- 1:11Speaker 1: both maybe hoping to see a little more. You take
- 1:14Speaker 1: any positives away from Saturday with those guys, not.
- 1:18Speaker 4: From the game.
- 1:19Speaker 3: The reports from the week of the battles that they
- 1:24Speaker 3: had with the Cowboys and the Rams and the joint practices,
- 1:27Speaker 3: those were very positive. Sound like they got great work.
- 1:30Speaker 3: But I don't know if there was very many redeeming
- 1:33Speaker 3: qualities from that game on Saturday.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Do you ever have one like that one? Do you
- 1:37Speaker 1: ever ever have one like that? John, a preseason game
- 1:39Speaker 1: that you just went like that?
- 1:41Speaker 3: I just don't remember, I not that I can think of. Yeh,
- 1:45Speaker 3: we set off the air. Joel and I were looking
- 1:47Speaker 3: at each other, and we've called Saints preseason games for
- 1:50Speaker 3: thirteen or fourteen years now, and that one might have
- 1:54Speaker 3: been one of the least impressive games that we've witnessed,
- 1:58Speaker 3: and I think there's a number of factors there, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: you don't want to point to excuses, but you also
- 2:04Speaker 3: want to be realistic of how the valuation of preseason
- 2:11Speaker 3: games has changed over the years. Would you mind elaborating
- 2:15Speaker 3: a little Yeah, Well, they used to have four preseason games,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and preseason game number one, the starters played for about
- 2:23Speaker 3: a quarter. Preseason two, you played about a half. Preseason
- 2:26Speaker 3: game number three, you've played into that third quarter and
- 2:30Speaker 3: you didn't really take your starters out or rest until
- 2:35Speaker 3: the fourth game. And that was across the board. And
- 2:38Speaker 3: now you start these games with a list of players
- 2:42Speaker 3: from both sides that you've blacked out half the roster
- 2:48Speaker 3: of starters and some second stringers that don't even dress.
- 2:51Speaker 3: And a lot of that has to do with the
- 2:54Speaker 3: work that they get in more controlled environments of those
- 2:57Speaker 3: joint practices. But that's just how it's evolved and how
- 3:02Speaker 3: teams use preseason games. It used to be a part
- 3:08Speaker 3: of that ramp up process.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And it inevitably and undeniably.
- 3:15Speaker 3: It's changed how the teams across the board have used that.
- 3:18Speaker 3: There's not very many starters unless there's a position battle
- 3:22Speaker 3: or a new coach that are getting a ton of
- 3:26Speaker 3: quarters in time in these preseason games, John.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Was there a player or maybe a position group where
- 3:32Speaker 1: you thought guys had a great opportunity that missed the
- 3:37Speaker 1: opportunity on Saturday.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Well, you know you're looking at the wide receiver position
- 3:43Speaker 3: and backup running back position, especially with Tamara down, that
- 3:49Speaker 3: you're hoping that somebody just grabs.
- 3:51Speaker 4: The reins on those.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I think we all think that Kendra Miller has the
- 3:55Speaker 3: talent to be a major contributor during the season. His
- 3:58Speaker 3: biggest stumbling block has always been health for him. But
- 4:04Speaker 3: got to see him a little bit, and and then
- 4:06Speaker 3: there were others that are competing and Devin Neil comes.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Back from a hamstring only to leave the game with
- 4:11Speaker 4: a hamstring.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Uh Ty Chandler impressed in Week one and then bumbles
- 4:16Speaker 3: near the goal line on Saturday, and uh C J.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Donaldson is brings something to the table that the others
- 4:24Speaker 3: don't in that big frame and physicality, and you know
- 4:28Speaker 3: you're hoping that those kind of battles start to trickle
- 4:33Speaker 3: out and you've got some clear answers. I think the
- 4:35Speaker 3: same thing holds true at the wide receiver position. Obviously,
- 4:38Speaker 3: with the injuries of Jordan and Tyson, there's more opportunity there.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And I don't know whether it was, you know, it
- 4:45Speaker 3: just wasn't a great performance around them across the board.
- 4:49Speaker 3: But Bob Means and Austin Jr. Or guys that are
- 4:53Speaker 3: they're competing to make this roster, and you know, it's
- 4:58Speaker 3: it's hard to evaluate who brings more value when when
- 5:04Speaker 3: the overall.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Performance was as let's call it disappointing.
- 5:08Speaker 1: As it was, Super Bowl champion. Former Saint John Stinchcomb
- 5:11Speaker 1: is with us on the call for the Saints preseason games.
- 5:13Speaker 1: As you mentioned with Joel Myers up, it's hard to
- 5:16Speaker 1: talk about the Saints this preseason John without talking about injuries.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I mean, everybody has them. It feels feels like this
- 5:24Speaker 1: has been an excessive amount. But first of all, just yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 1: is this an excessive amount or does this feel par
- 5:31Speaker 1: for the course for you? Having gone through on what
- 5:34Speaker 1: double digit.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I think there are more And with the exception of
- 5:40Speaker 3: Brazil right out of the gates with his ac L,
- 5:42Speaker 3: I think the good news on that front is they
- 5:46Speaker 3: seem short term at least most of them are.
- 5:48Speaker 4: You're coming back.
- 5:49Speaker 3: In a few weeks. Is the timeline with the exception
- 5:53Speaker 3: of Jordan Tyson, who appears to be a couple of
- 5:56Speaker 3: months and that his timeline is a little bit longer.
- 5:59Speaker 3: With that said, it's hit every position group and I
- 6:05Speaker 3: think you saw it from defensive tackle to the wide receivers.
- 6:08Speaker 4: The running backs, it's across the.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Board, Quincy Riley, cornerback. It's a lot of injuries that
- 6:15Speaker 3: are spread out, and I'm sure they're trying to they
- 6:19Speaker 3: being the brass on the second floor over at fifty
- 6:22Speaker 3: eight hundred airline or trying to figure out is that
- 6:26Speaker 3: something that we're doing, is that something that we need
- 6:28Speaker 3: to adjust. But again, thankfully, they seem to be more
- 6:34Speaker 3: short term injury, soft tissue things ankles and whatnot that
- 6:38Speaker 3: you can recover from. And with that one week off
- 6:42Speaker 3: between preseason and game number one, the hopes are that
- 6:46Speaker 3: your roster is a little bit healthier when you roll
- 6:48Speaker 3: into the season.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Is there a player or position group that you think
- 6:52Speaker 1: is most significant we talk about these injuries going to
- 6:54Speaker 1: the final preseason.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Game, well d lines certainly stick out to me and
- 7:01Speaker 3: that you know, Kristin Miller had flashed briefly when when
- 7:05Speaker 3: he was available in that preseason game number one, but
- 7:08Speaker 3: he was stunted because of the injuries during OTAs and
- 7:14Speaker 3: the same thing for training camp, and then wasn't available
- 7:17Speaker 3: very much during the joint practices following preseason game number one.
- 7:21Speaker 3: God Show has been down. I mean that se line,
- 7:24Speaker 3: even after you get past the Brazee injury, they've they've
- 7:29Speaker 3: faced a lot of uphill and that's a position group
- 7:33Speaker 3: that you know, I think they need time on test together.
- 7:37Speaker 3: That one sticks out to me the most, probably John.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Is it a thing where I mean, you know the
- 7:42Speaker 1: old adage in the NFL, like you're never staying the same,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you're getting better, you're getting worse. Are they going into
- 7:46Speaker 1: this week, this final week of the preseason looking to
- 7:51Speaker 1: add to the to the roster or or get the
- 7:55Speaker 1: guys that you have better?
- 7:59Speaker 3: Well, I mean it's picked up Daniel Carlson and Zamir
- 8:02Speaker 3: White and a trade and a fine, so they're obviously
- 8:06Speaker 3: trying to improve the roster. I think this, if I'm
- 8:10Speaker 3: being honest, Matt, if you look at their roster and
- 8:13Speaker 3: they're much further along than they were a year ago,
- 8:16Speaker 3: and health needs to needs to come together as it
- 8:20Speaker 3: has in years past. But for the teams that are
- 8:25Speaker 3: able to make these runs and the seasons are long
- 8:28Speaker 3: and brutal. You try to stay healthy A and B.
- 8:32Speaker 3: You have to have the depth and in spots to
- 8:36Speaker 3: where you can weather the storm when those injuries do happen.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And I think that's something that the Saints are continuing
- 8:44Speaker 3: to build. They've got an upgraded starting lineup from where
- 8:50Speaker 3: they were at least last year, maybe even the year
- 8:53Speaker 3: before that, and going back a couple of years. But
- 8:57Speaker 3: you're trying to get that depth where you can be
- 9:00Speaker 3: competitive for seventeen regular season games and be in position
- 9:04Speaker 3: to make an impact after that in the postseason.
- 9:07Speaker 1: John, last thing for you. I had a buddy who
- 9:10Speaker 1: let's call him a well known New Orleans restauranteur, who
- 9:14Speaker 1: texted me on Saturday after the game, just distraught. Hey man,
- 9:18Speaker 1: if six one on the field, I ain't even sweating.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And I guess let's punctuate this with a positive because
- 9:26Speaker 1: it sounded like the joint practice has actually went really well.
- 9:31Speaker 1: That's two weeks in a row now with the joint
- 9:33Speaker 1: practice is going really well for the Saints. I don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: know if you got to watch the joint practice, John Off.
- 9:37Speaker 1: You're just there for the game, but if you were
- 9:39Speaker 1: there or just talking to people around the organization. What
- 9:42Speaker 1: are the positives they took from last week with the
- 9:46Speaker 1: joint practices independent of the game.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Yeah, so the reports that I got from people that
- 9:53Speaker 3: were there and know have a clue, including Karn Armstead,
- 9:56Speaker 3: who was.
- 9:57Speaker 1: All of them tons of credibility there. Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yeah, So so let's start with somebody that's credible that
- 10:03Speaker 4: you know.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I value as a source. You know, he felt like
- 10:07Speaker 3: we got the better into the stick against Jacksonville and
- 10:11Speaker 3: Dallas and Ram and Rams and all the joint practices.
- 10:14Speaker 4: That's a huge statement.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And you know, when you're coming off a game where
- 10:19Speaker 3: you get pumped thirty four to nothing, I think we
- 10:24Speaker 3: need that that grain of salt to realize that there
- 10:29Speaker 3: is no Chase Young, there's no Tyler Shuck, there's no
- 10:32Speaker 3: a chan There's all the all the players that we
- 10:36Speaker 3: expect to see and make a huge impact. They weren't
- 10:38Speaker 3: available in these preseason games. But yet when they have
- 10:42Speaker 3: been available, and when it's good on good versus versus
- 10:45Speaker 3: some of the very best this NFL has to offer.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Dallas's offense was number one offense in the country last year,
- 10:54Speaker 3: and the Rams roster might be the most loaded of
- 10:58Speaker 3: any team heading into this. So you're competing against really
- 11:02Speaker 3: good teams that expect to make deep runs, a playoff
- 11:04Speaker 3: team against Jacksonville included, and for our best against their
- 11:09Speaker 3: best to come out and you say.
- 11:12Speaker 4: We did more than just hold our own.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I think that is the positive signs that any team
- 11:17Speaker 3: is hoping for. You want that to be reflected in
- 11:20Speaker 3: the preseason games. It's a different Those are different players,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and anytime you go out there and you've.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Got a Florida lee on.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Your helmet and you represent the Black and Gold, you
- 11:29Speaker 3: need to understand the weight of that and you want
- 11:33Speaker 3: it to be honored. But for the for the guys
- 11:37Speaker 3: that we're not available, the ones, if you will, the
- 11:42Speaker 3: the guys that are going to be playing for the Saints,
- 11:47Speaker 3: they seem to have have won their matchups more often
- 11:50Speaker 3: than not in those joint practices, and I think that's
- 11:54Speaker 3: a really positive sign for what this season can hold
- 11:58Speaker 3: for the Saints.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Well said, uh, one more crack at it Saturday night
- 12:03Speaker 1: against Dallas. They're at and T Stadium. John Stinchcomb will
- 12:06Speaker 1: be on the call. Hey man, we always appreciate the time.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Thanks so much for jumping aboard and giving us a
- 12:10Speaker 1: few minutes.
- 12:11Speaker 3: You got it, my man. Thank you, thanks
