- 0:25Welcome in again everybody to the Terry
- 0:26Bowen Show on the Auburn Undercover
- 0:28podcast. I'm your co-host, Ronnie
- 0:30Sanders, and today we are joined by a
- 0:33special guest, former Arkansas coach and
- 0:36Old Miss coach, Houston Nut. So, we've
- 0:39got new coach at Old Miss. We got a new
- 0:40coach at Arkansas. We have a new coach
- 0:42at Auburn. A lot to talk about today.
- 0:45>> Houston, good to see you, Houston, and a
- 0:47new coach at Oklahoma State because I
- 0:48know coach has some ties to Oklahoma
- 0:51State as well. Uh, but I guess it it's
- 0:54it's funny because it should be about
- 0:56football playing with the with the
- 0:58conference championships coming up and
- 1:00the postseason right after that, but all
- 1:02the talk is of uh coaching changes and
- 1:05who's going where? I mean, and you and I
- 1:08are about the same age and and coached
- 1:10much of the same time in our lives.
- 1:12>> Uh, but does it seem different now? Is
- 1:15it is it more uh uh are they firing more
- 1:18coaches or is it just that we are so
- 1:20much more aware of it and talking about
- 1:21it?
- 1:23>> I think they're firing a little bit more
- 1:24coaches right now and it seems like a
- 1:26lot quicker too, guys. Uh you know, when
- 1:29you look around
- 1:31uh there's there's firings in September,
- 1:34there's firings in October. And uh I've
- 1:37had a lot of people ask me the last few
- 1:39weeks, coach, what is the advantage of
- 1:41firing a coach in September? And I said,
- 1:45that's a real good question. I don't
- 1:46know if there's really a good advantage
- 1:48or not, but it's telling one or two
- 1:50things. One, you know, it's it's telling
- 1:52your fans I guess the AD's getting so
- 1:55much pressure, Terry, as you know, and
- 1:56honey, you know, they get so much
- 1:58pressure, they feel like we got to give
- 2:00our fans hope. So they feel like they
- 2:02can give them hope by firing the guy. So
- 2:04you fire the coach and then just like
- 2:06you when you look at um you look at
- 2:08Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, miss, you look at
- 2:11all the the landscape of this thing.
- 2:14It's all we talked about for a whole
- 2:16week, guys, was Lane Kein.
- 2:17>> Mhm.
- 2:18>> Lane Kein, you know, he had the world he
- 2:20had the world on hold. Where is Lane
- 2:22going? And you know, as soon as he said,
- 2:24"Well, you know, we got to wait till
- 2:26after the Eggbo. We're gonna wait after
- 2:28the Eggbo." You know, it kind of gave
- 2:29you a well, you're probably not going to
- 2:30be at Old Miss if you're wait.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:34>> But uh boy, I tell you what I tell you
- 2:35what I hate though. And I you know I had
- 2:38I had so much respect for your father.
- 2:40>> Yeah.
- 2:41>> And uh he was always I got to play uh
- 2:45some golf with him on a couple of uh
- 2:47places a charity golf.
- 2:49>> Yeah.
- 2:50>> And I never will forget since we're
- 2:51talking about firs.
- 2:54So he I was I had the privilege of
- 2:57riding the cart with him and he said um
- 2:59he said, "Hey, Houston, I really love
- 3:01watching your teams play." And man, they
- 3:03play hard. And boy, you did a good job.
- 3:05And I said to him, Terry, I said, "Yeah,
- 3:07I just didn't go out the right way." He
- 3:10stopped that cart. He stopped that cart
- 3:12and he said, "Hey, hey, young fella, you
- 3:15see that stadium right over there? I got
- 3:17my name over there on that. I didn't go
- 3:19out the right way." And I tell you what,
- 3:21Terry, it it woke me up because, you
- 3:23know, we don't get the dismount that we
- 3:25want. And here I'm thinking, I'm riding
- 3:27around with a legend with the one of the
- 3:29best that's ever done it. And here I am
- 3:32thinking I didn't go out the right way
- 3:34and he put me in my place real quick.
- 3:38>> Well, you know, it's a different world.
- 3:40It's just a different world with the way
- 3:41things are.
- 3:42>> It is. And I and I think I think uh
- 3:45firings are more immediate. I think
- 3:46their demandings are uh for instant
- 3:50success. I guess when you get these new
- 3:52contracts that are so big and and
- 3:54sometimes I have to ponder. I said,
- 3:56"Holy cow, I was born too early." You
- 3:59know? Uh, but it's like you can't you
- 4:02you can't act like you you don't know
- 4:03what's going on when you sign these
- 4:05contracts that they're going to expect
- 4:07you to immediately turn a program around
- 4:10or they're going to expect to replace
- 4:13you if you don't or you have a bad year,
- 4:15not three or four bad years and and then
- 4:18of course you see a couple of teams that
- 4:19jump into the NIL and they do turn their
- 4:22program around very quickly. So, I think
- 4:24there is a definite sense that there's
- 4:26an immediacy uh in what they expect. And
- 4:29like you said, because I know you were
- 4:31the Eddie Robinson award winner when you
- 4:33were in the FCS and three times SEC
- 4:36coach of the year and a uh national
- 4:38football coach of the year in 99. I
- 4:40don't know if you remember this, but in
- 4:4199 you were in the Cotton Bowl against
- 4:44Texas, I believe. And I I me and Brad
- 4:46Sham did the broadcasting. I was in the
- 4:49booth for the first time ever. We did
- 4:51the They always did a radio broadcast of
- 4:53the uh of the uh Cotton Bowl as well as
- 4:56the uh television because I was working
- 4:58for ABC, but I got through that game
- 4:59after the regular season on radio with
- 5:01Brad. But that was a game I I don't know
- 5:03if you I'm sure you remember knocked off
- 5:05Texas and they got minus yards rushing.
- 5:08It was a big win for Arkansas that day.
- 5:11>> That was a great day. Great day for us.
- 5:13We We hadn't won a game in a a bowl game
- 5:17in about 15 years.
- 5:18>> Yeah. And coach, I was so nervous all
- 5:20week. You had Daryl Roy
- 5:23legendary captains. They're walking the
- 5:25the hotels all week and they're on the
- 5:27game. They're there before the uh the on
- 5:30the coin toss and and you guys were
- 5:32there and I think my goodness, man. I
- 5:34think cuz I you know, we're raised up in
- 5:36the old Southwest Conference days. That
- 5:39Texas game was really it meant a lot to
- 5:41me. Wasn't much sleep the night before
- 5:43because, you know, you wanted to please
- 5:45so bad. So, it it worked out pretty good
- 5:47for us that day. Yeah, that was a big
- 5:49game. It's funny. I live in Monroe,
- 5:51Louisiana still because that's where I
- 5:52let did my last coaching and uh my wife
- 5:54and I live here. And shoot, there a lot
- 5:56of our fans are all Arkansas fans. I in
- 5:58fact, I go to Sunday school with a guy
- 6:00named Danny Crawford. You probably don't
- 6:01know him. He played uh defensive tackle
- 6:03for Arkansas probably five years before
- 6:06you got there, but a lot of Arkansas
- 6:08Razerbacks in Northeast Louisiana uh
- 6:11that go to school across the state line
- 6:13up there. But uh that's a big game.
- 6:15Texas and Arkansas is a big and te and
- 6:17and Texas uh LSU it's just a great old
- 6:20rivalries but especially Texas A&M and
- 6:23Texas were the rivals of Arkansas.
- 6:25>> No doubt about it. No doubt about it. Uh
- 6:28you know everybody got real excited
- 6:30about Texas and I said how come y'all
- 6:32don't get more excited about Texas Tech
- 6:33or TCU when we played them? But no, it
- 6:36was Texas. You had to beat Texas. But um
- 6:39man, uh as a freshman when I played at
- 6:42Arkansas, I noticed Earl Campbell coming
- 6:43down the sideline and I said, "Boy, I
- 6:45tell you what, I'm in real football now,
- 6:47man. I'm I'm in college football. This
- 6:49man was running over us and what an
- 6:52athlete." And it woke me up, you know,
- 6:54about recruiting and, you know, all
- 6:56these great coaches that uh patrolled
- 6:59the sidelines. You know, I learned so
- 7:00much from those guys. So, it was just
- 7:02that was that was a great day,
- 7:04>> you know. And you mentioned Frank Bur,
- 7:06one of the great coaches, and I I've
- 7:07always admired and loved following the
- 7:10great coaches. We would go to those Nike
- 7:12trips and I'd listen to Bobby Bowen and
- 7:15and Joe Pno and the coach at BYU. What's
- 7:18it? Why has I forgotten his name?
- 7:19Coachell
- 7:20>> Lavel Edwards. They were just just to
- 7:23listen to those guys. And the sad thing
- 7:25is, like you mentioned, I can remember
- 7:27the day my dad called me because I had a
- 7:28law degree and my sister Terry, they
- 7:31just fired me. And I said, "Holy cow,
- 7:33Dad. They can't D. They just fired me."
- 7:35And I'm I think the reality is if you
- 7:38coach long enough in this business,
- 7:40you're going to get a new AD or you're
- 7:41going to get some situation where
- 7:43there's just going to be a change. And I
- 7:45guess that's just something we have to
- 7:47accept. I want to ask you Lane Kippen
- 7:50situation. I sit there and I've watched
- 7:52it and I always thought he'd go to
- 7:53Florida. He always reminded me of coach
- 7:54Burgerer. He always had some ties to
- 7:57John Reeves and the Florida thing. I
- 7:59said, "Boy, he's a perfect fit. that
- 8:01cocky, confident type of cockiness that
- 8:04he just fits in down there at Florida.
- 8:05But could they have could he have
- 8:07handled how would could he have handled
- 8:09that better or Old Miss have handled
- 8:11that better? I I I don't know that you
- 8:13I've gotten to the point where I feel
- 8:14like I' I can say what I want to say
- 8:16because I've been fired and I've been
- 8:17you know Old Miss and uh you know
- 8:19Arkansas and Old Miss situation
- 8:21>> Terry I do I think it could be handled
- 8:23much better and that's where I think you
- 8:25know somebody's got to get in a room
- 8:28>> because I know there's some smart enough
- 8:29people to get in a room and since we're
- 8:31going down this road of we're basically
- 8:34NFL it's an NFL free semi-pro league you
- 8:37know uh when I look at the miss deal
- 8:40Remember,
- 8:42Miss had four starters returning. So
- 8:44that meant Lane Keifin had some boosters
- 8:47that went out and helped him get about
- 8:4918 starters.
- 8:50>> Oh yeah.
- 8:51>> And they also helped him
- 8:53>> get from FAU, that other Florida, a
- 8:56little small. They helped him get from
- 8:58Florida Atlantic back into this big
- 9:00show, the SEC,
- 9:01>> right?
- 9:02>> And to think about all that week, I the
- 9:05players and and I hear this. Here's what
- 9:08the conversation that bothers me. Well,
- 9:09Old Miss may may not be able to get in
- 9:11the playoffs now because they lost their
- 9:13coach. Now, wait a minute.
- 9:14>> These players deserve to be in that
- 9:18playoff. And I just think it could been
- 9:20handled so much better. And then I I
- 9:23kind of like what the AD uh Keith
- 9:24Carter, I like what he did. He said,
- 9:27"No, you you can't coach our team."
- 9:30Although I know he wanted to coach it.
- 9:31And it's one thing, coach. I know we
- 9:33Hey, you want to go to LSU? I get it.
- 9:34But my point is for seven to eight days
- 9:38all we heard is what's going to happen.
- 9:41When are you going to make a decision?
- 9:42I'm going to make a decision after the
- 9:44Egg Bowl. You know, just prolong prolong
- 9:46prolong and some it's got to be some
- 9:50rules to me and and it's to me let's
- 9:53let's wait till after the season uh
- 9:55before we can talk to coaches. But then
- 9:57all of a sudden I know the next the next
- 9:59thing is going to be well wait a minute
- 10:01the portal opens this week
- 10:02>> right?
- 10:02>> So how are we going to do that? you
- 10:04know, we got to have our coach. So, you
- 10:05got all these things to me that are
- 10:07running into each other. There's got to
- 10:09be some guard rails and some new rules.
- 10:11And I just think it could be handled
- 10:13better. And and again, like I said, I'm
- 10:15not for Hey, somebody wants to go to
- 10:17another school. I get it. I understand
- 10:19it. But the way it was handled and now
- 10:21you're going to punish a team. There's a
- 10:23the the rumor and rumor of Terry. And I
- 10:25like to hear what y'all think, Ronnie.
- 10:27that now the rumors miss may not get in
- 10:30and they have maybe had the best team
- 10:32they've ever had since 1960.
- 10:34You know,
- 10:35>> here here's my question. If if you're a
- 10:38coach and you've coached your you've
- 10:40you've been there six years and like you
- 10:42say they pulled him out of FAU and
- 10:45you've done a great job, but and I
- 10:48understand he wants to take another job,
- 10:50but how do you walk out on your team?
- 10:52Like, right, I understand that. Yeah.
- 10:54Okay, LSU is a better job. Great.
- 10:56Florida's a better job. Auburn's a
- 10:57better job. But okay, this isn't the
- 10:59time. I mean,
- 11:00>> but Exactly right, Ronnie. Exactly
- 11:03right. I agree a thousand%. It's not the
- 11:05time. And and it it's just it it's just
- 11:08not a good look and I just I just hate
- 11:11there's a lot of things right now that
- 11:12I've got my popcorn and coke on the
- 11:14sideline and I'm watching and hey, how
- 11:16about this, Terry? Texas Tech may have
- 11:19the best team in the country.
- 11:21>> Absolutely.
- 11:22>> We We're talking about Indiana. We're
- 11:24not talking about basketball. We're
- 11:26talking about Indiana football. And it
- 11:28just shows you what does that mean? If
- 11:30you got the money and the resources, you
- 11:33got a chance to go, you get you a good
- 11:35coach, you got you a chance to go to the
- 11:37dance.
- 11:38>> And so it's just a whole different world
- 11:40right now, boy.
- 11:41>> Right. You think of all those schools,
- 11:42and I was talking to someone today,
- 11:44those schools that spent millions on a
- 11:47100,000 seat stadium or the number one
- 11:50weight room in the country or the best
- 11:52cafeteria, and the players don't even
- 11:54look at it. They want to see what's
- 11:56going in my pocket. Uh, and
- 11:58unfortunately, the coaches are are doing
- 12:00the same thing to a degree. And so, it's
- 12:02a somewhere along the line there. You
- 12:04just feel like there's got to be an
- 12:06exit. I just don't know if there's an
- 12:07exit strategy from the NCAA
- 12:10uh of how high it can get. You know,
- 12:12somewhere along the line, I just think a
- 12:14school's got to say, you know what? Uh
- 12:16why don't you go on? I think we'll we
- 12:18are a great program. We've always been a
- 12:20great program. We're going to develop
- 12:21we're going to get a come a young
- 12:22program from like a Murray State or
- 12:24something or or like a Sanford where I
- 12:26came from. And we're going we're going
- 12:28to help that guy and he's going to help
- 12:29us. and and I don't know somewhere along
- 12:32the line there's there's got to be a
- 12:33little bit of a a uh uh slowdown on some
- 12:37point, but but I don't know where where
- 12:38that that's going to be. Tell me about
- 12:40the new coach of Oklahoma State. Do you
- 12:42do you do you do you like to pick that
- 12:44guy? Because I know you left Arkansas
- 12:45and you end up going to Oklahoma State
- 12:47and worked with Jimmy Jimmy Johnson
- 12:49while he was there. One of the great
- 12:50years Barry Sanders and M all those
- 12:53great players.
- 12:55>> Jimmy Johnson, Pat Jones, Dave War that
- 12:57Tony Wise, all those guys were there.
- 13:00uh and uh had a great run of course with
- 13:02Hartley Dykes and Barry Sanders, Thurman
- 13:04Thomas, all those guys, you know. Um I
- 13:07don't I've never met Coach Morris in
- 13:08North Texas. Just watch this team play.
- 13:11Really like what they do. Really love
- 13:13the the way how hard they play. And u
- 13:16it's probably a really good pick,
- 13:17especially, you know, Oklahoma State's
- 13:20not big enough for them to sign 25. And
- 13:22so they've got to have Texas and so good
- 13:25thing about coach Morris, he's been
- 13:27right there in that state of Texas. That
- 13:29should help him, especially in North
- 13:30Texas. So, North Texas, East Texas, as
- 13:33you know, Terry, you can go turn over
- 13:35some rocks. You know, Texas is gonna get
- 13:36theirs, right? Stadium is going to get
- 13:38theirs. But the good thing about the
- 13:40state of Texas, even Arkansas, even
- 13:42little bitty Arkansas, we could go down
- 13:44there and get second and thirds. And
- 13:45guess what? you do the right evaluation,
- 13:48all of a sudden that second and third
- 13:50star, you know, of course we didn't ever
- 13:51worry about stars, but that second third
- 13:53star, all of a sudden, by the time he
- 13:54was a sophomore junior, after some
- 13:56development, all of a sudden, woo, he's
- 13:59a differencemaker, you know. So, uh, I
- 14:01think that's going to be a good fit.
- 14:03>> Yeah. How about Arkansas Silverstein? I
- 14:05think he did a great job at Memphis. Uh,
- 14:07looks like from a standpoint, I remember
- 14:09I watched the game when Memphis played
- 14:11Arkansas. Of course, that was a a nice
- 14:13audition for that coach there, but it
- 14:15seems to be a good song. I like the fact
- 14:18that it seems like everybody goes after
- 14:20the existing power four coach that's
- 14:22already got a record, but if you do your
- 14:24homework, there's some great coaches
- 14:26that are on the verge, just need that
- 14:28first opportunity at the power four
- 14:31level that are winning big. Uh, and
- 14:33Auburn did the same thing, going to
- 14:34South Florida and getting their head
- 14:36coach.
- 14:37>> That's exactly right. uh you know, Coach
- 14:39Silverfield, he was down 18 points
- 14:41versus Arkansas, down 18, and just uh
- 14:44stuck to his knit. And I tell you one,
- 14:45one thing that was really impressive
- 14:47when you watch Memphis's defense,
- 14:50>> man, they fly to the ball now. I thought
- 14:53they did a really good job of Tailon
- 14:55Green. Ton Green, the quarterback for
- 14:56Arkansas, is really a a dual athlete
- 15:00that can fly
- 15:01>> and he he can run 44. I really thought
- 15:03they did a really good job of keeping
- 15:05him bottled up and uh really running him
- 15:08and making him make some difficult
- 15:10throws. They they they turned it over
- 15:12twice and then of course they got that
- 15:14very crucial fumble there at the end
- 15:16when they're just trying to run out the
- 15:17clock and kick a field goal to win the
- 15:18game
- 15:19>> and boy Memphis just you got to give
- 15:21coach Silverfield and their staff uh a
- 15:24great deal of credit. So uh I I think he
- 15:26I think he's a good one. you know, some
- 15:27of the fans, you know, they're always
- 15:29wanting the uh the next uh John Gruden
- 15:32or the big big splash, right?
- 15:34>> But as you said, Terry, this these guys
- 15:37have lapsed around the track. They've
- 15:39worked hard and they done it at a lower
- 15:41level and they're hungry and ready to
- 15:43go.
- 15:44>> Yeah, they they sure have. And and I
- 15:46just feel like, you know, I watched
- 15:47almost all the Arkansas games as part of
- 15:49my job in covering most of the SEC and
- 15:52ACC each week, but what a great offense.
- 15:55They just seem snake and lost some close
- 15:57games. I like Sam Pit, but I wish it
- 15:58could have worked out. Uh they came so
- 16:00close that every time they played, you
- 16:03knew they were going to put a lot of
- 16:04points on the board, make it close, but
- 16:05hopefully the new coach, they can get
- 16:07some deep, you know, when you start
- 16:08recruiting, you better understand, you
- 16:10better get it's like Texas Tech did.
- 16:11They went out and got the best defensive
- 16:12line in the country probably. Uh and so
- 16:15you got to start, I guess, when you
- 16:16start NIL, you better be careful not
- 16:18going on one side of the ball too much
- 16:20because it's that defense that's
- 16:21probably going to get you through the
- 16:22postseason or to the end of the season.
- 16:25Boy, you're so right. You're so right.
- 16:27You know what' be interesting, Terry, is
- 16:30is now I feel a little bit for these
- 16:34high school kids and these coaches. You
- 16:36talked about that window that's
- 16:37shortened.
- 16:38>> And so now it's so easy, so quick say,
- 16:41"Hey, let's go jump in this portal and
- 16:43let's get an older player, you know."
- 16:45And I've had a lot of high school senior
- 16:48dads when I I live down in Fairview next
- 16:50to McKenna, Texas, and they would hit me
- 16:52with, "Well, my son's not getting looked
- 16:53at. You know, he did this, he did that."
- 16:56And they could not I could see it the
- 16:57last couple of years the trend of the a
- 17:00lot of these teams are going to that
- 17:02portal to get the older players because
- 17:04they don't feel like they have time to
- 17:06develop this guy uh two years because as
- 17:09as you mentioned that window now, we
- 17:11don't get five years to see how they
- 17:12grow up and all that anymore. You got a
- 17:14win almost yesterday. There's about a
- 17:16two-year window in now. You better make
- 17:18some some things happen.
- 17:20>> Yeah. And I think we could have figured
- 17:21when I say we, I talk about us older
- 17:23guys that left the profession about the
- 17:25time that the NA in the portal came in.
- 17:28I think we would have figured out like
- 17:30we figured out so many other things over
- 17:32the transition of coaching. But Florida
- 17:35State, for example, is a is an example.
- 17:37And I like Mike Norett Norville. I like
- 17:39him. He's he seems to be a good fit. But
- 17:42they went all in totally for the portal.
- 17:45And if you have a couple of losses or
- 17:46your or your your season began to go
- 17:49south, they lack the loyalty. So I think
- 17:52you've I think the key will be the coach
- 17:53to figure out how many high school
- 17:55athletes can I get that love this
- 17:57university, that love the fight song,
- 17:59that love the color, that think we got
- 18:00the best band, that meet their wife
- 18:02there, that base of players, and then
- 18:05fill in with the portal because you go
- 18:07too much one way, as soon as it goes
- 18:09south, they all say, "I'm leaving." you
- 18:11know, and that's a problem that but that
- 18:13Mike Norll's dealt with at Florida
- 18:14State. He's he's got a chance to
- 18:16overcome it. And God bless his agent who
- 18:18got him a contract that saved his job,
- 18:21but he's got to figure that out if he
- 18:23has enough time now.
- 18:24>> Well, coach, I think you hit on
- 18:26something that's really important right
- 18:27there. That is so important to have that
- 18:30guy that has that blueprint, to have
- 18:33that mixture because you hit on
- 18:34something I see it all the time. I speak
- 18:36I still speak to teams.
- 18:38>> Yeah. And I could tell you when you lose
- 18:42early on, there's a sense of I've had a
- 18:46lot of conversation with coaches. Well,
- 18:47there's a sense of like you said that
- 18:50loyalty factor,
- 18:52>> you know, that that off season and maybe
- 18:54probably he probably doesn't know that
- 18:55fight song, you know, because the two
- 18:58words that they're used to is the at the
- 19:00end of every relationship now right now
- 19:03is how much
- 19:04>> how much how much you going to pay me.
- 19:06And so when you do lose, boy, you better
- 19:09have a group of seniors, a group of
- 19:10leaders in that locker room that's going
- 19:12to hang on and keep fighting. And so,
- 19:15boy, I think you're so right. Boy, that
- 19:17mixture, that balance of getting that
- 19:19proper that team in there between young,
- 19:21old, and a mixture of groups, especially
- 19:24to go all to go all out as you said and
- 19:27get all portals. Watch out. I tell you
- 19:31another thing too that and of course
- 19:33having and and you and I both coached at
- 19:35different schools where you have to
- 19:36learn to start again and build a program
- 19:39from the beginning but getting a
- 19:41coaching staff is not always an easy
- 19:43thing too because how many do you
- 19:45retain? How many do you bring of your
- 19:48own? If you come from a G5 level school
- 19:51do you have player then you you're hired
- 19:52to hire the best guys you can afford and
- 19:54so you got to be careful. Don't you
- 19:56can't bring everybody, but you got to
- 19:57bring the right ones. And then you got
- 19:59to keep some, maybe one or two to keep
- 20:01the continuity going. Uh, and then, as
- 20:03my dad always says, the most important
- 20:05thing on the staff is loyalty. You
- 20:07better get people who are loyal. You
- 20:09know, I always tell my coach, you can
- 20:10want any job in the country except one.
- 20:12You can't want mine. And because I said
- 20:14that's mine, and I don't plan on leaving
- 20:16anywhere. Uh, and so, but loyalty and
- 20:20and staffing is going to be important
- 20:21some of these new coaches. And I always
- 20:23thought for that's one of the most
- 20:25important things. Do they know how to
- 20:26staff? Can they put together that staff?
- 20:28Because the staff will make you or break
- 20:30you.
- 20:30>> No doubt about it. No doubt about it.
- 20:33And some of these guys, you know, you
- 20:35know, when I talk to them oneonone know,
- 20:37what's your goals? What do you want to
- 20:38do? Hey, I want to be a head coach. I
- 20:40said, well, that's great. Well, go be
- 20:41the best receiver coach in America then.
- 20:43That's what I'm that's what we're paying
- 20:44you for right now to be the best
- 20:46offensive line coach in America or
- 20:48defensive back coach, whatever it may
- 20:50be. And uh you said it so well. Don't
- 20:52worry about this job. You worry about
- 20:54getting your group of 10 players getting
- 20:56them to play at a very high level. But
- 20:58that thing, you know, it's tough and and
- 21:00then you always I always thought it was
- 21:01tough in that transition when you go to
- 21:03another school cuz you know those
- 21:05there's always those few boosters that
- 21:07would give you those name. This is a guy
- 21:08you got to keep. This is a guy you got
- 21:10to keep. You know, you always get this
- 21:12advice, you know, and so to you got to
- 21:14filter all that out and get the best
- 21:16group of guys that will get in that
- 21:18foxhole with you.
- 21:19>> That's right. It's funny. I was I was at
- 21:21we had we had we had a uh Christmas
- 21:23decorations at church last night. Uh and
- 21:25our assistant pastor kind of got that
- 21:28that that that shadow beard. You know
- 21:30they can see you see on the sideline
- 21:32those coordinators. They all look the
- 21:34same. They got that square jaw. They got
- 21:36that shadow on their face that and they
- 21:38all have that I want to be a head coach
- 21:40look. And I put the arm around my
- 21:42preacher. I said preacher look at your
- 21:44assistant. He's got that coaching
- 21:46waiting look in his face. You better be
- 21:48careful. He got that coaching cuz every
- 21:51time I look on the sideline, it's almost
- 21:53like who's got that perfect look, you
- 21:55know, and ready for the next job. You
- 21:57better be good at what you do. Uh or
- 22:00you're not going to be out there
- 22:01available for that next job.
- 22:02>> Your your your dad and Frank Roy, some
- 22:05of these guys, they'd be upset with some
- 22:07of the dress code that's going on on
- 22:08those sidelines. Ronnie Ronnie, have you
- 22:11noticed some of these cut off sleeves
- 22:12and some of the Bill Bich snipe stuff?
- 22:15They they got those six day old fright
- 22:17bros was a you know button up you know
- 22:19he like clean and clean.
- 22:21>> Oh yeah. Take a look at take a look.
- 22:24>> Yeah. He he would tell me sometimes
- 22:27there's a couple of your coaches that
- 22:29need to clean up a little bit better
- 22:32weekends, you know. And I said, "Yes,
- 22:34sir. Yes, sir. We'll get that taken care
- 22:35of, coach." You know,
- 22:38>> well, you know, when I went to Auburn, I
- 22:40was young. I was 36 years old. I was
- 22:41young and I don't care if my dad was a
- 22:43head coach. I was nervous as could be.
- 22:45Uh, but Suge Jordan wore a shirt and
- 22:48tie. Pat and I wore a shirt and tie. So,
- 22:50I wore a shirt and tie just out of
- 22:52respect for what they wore. You know, we
- 22:54were all moving away from that. My dad
- 22:56moved away from that. But I just felt
- 22:58like being a young guy at a school like
- 23:00with tradition that that would be
- 23:02respectful of the way they used to do
- 23:04it. And that of course we started
- 23:05winning and I couldn't I couldn't change
- 23:07shirt and tie. I had to stay with the
- 23:09whole time uh as far as that sideline.
- 23:11But there is
- 23:12>> What What year? What year was it when
- 23:14you you went 15 and0?
- 23:16>> Well, well, my I went undefeated my
- 23:18first year in 93, but we were on
- 23:20probation and then we won the first n we
- 23:23went to 20. We won the first nine my
- 23:25second year before we ever tied back. We
- 23:27tied Georgia, but we won our first 20
- 23:29straight and I I should have I should
- 23:31have lost early and won late. I made the
- 23:34mistake of winning too much early.
- 23:36>> Hey, you and I on the same page on that
- 23:38one. Hey, one one real good first couple
- 23:40of years at Old Miss and Ed Orzon left
- 23:44me some good players. They didn't want
- 23:46to real He left me some good players,
- 23:47but those last two signing classes
- 23:49wasn't very good. We had all freshman,
- 23:52but uh you know, it's how it works
- 23:54sometimes, you know. It's just it's it's
- 23:55tough gig.
- 23:56>> Yeah, it make of all the movement. I
- 24:00mean, last year we had no jobs in the
- 24:01SEC. This year you've got what five
- 24:03open. Um and and there's going to be
- 24:06some I've been saying all along there's
- 24:07going to be some strange hires. Guys get
- 24:09jobs because there's the cycles move so
- 24:11quickly. Um there just not a lot of
- 24:13proven guys. And so I think I think
- 24:15you're starting to see that.
- 24:17>> Boy, I know it. You know, every year,
- 24:20you know, the the first press
- 24:21conference, I'll never forget SEC, my
- 24:23our guys would say they'd always talk
- 24:25about the hot seat. The hot seat. Who's
- 24:27on the hot seat? And I said, "Guys,
- 24:29look, every day you might as well say,
- 24:31"Hey, I'm on the hot seat." There's a
- 24:33lot of them except maybe Nick Saving
- 24:34who's not on the hot seat, but everybody
- 24:36else is on the hot seat because you
- 24:37better win.
- 24:38>> And Frank Bros was great because he was
- 24:40so honest. He said,
- 24:42>> "We pay you a lot of money and I love
- 24:44the way you your players graduate. I
- 24:47love they're involved in the community,
- 24:48but remember I pay you to win." And so
- 24:52he was he was so honest and direct and
- 24:55hey, I knew where I stood, you know, and
- 24:56and he was right. But Ronnie, getting
- 24:58back to your question, that's what makes
- 25:00it hard. It seems like every year
- 25:02there's two to three, you know, there's
- 25:05going to be two or three changes every
- 25:06year in the SEC because everybody wants
- 25:08to win like yesterday. They want to win.
- 25:11Boosters want to win. All these people
- 25:13want to they want to win. They and a lot
- 25:15of them you winning is different. Eight
- 25:18wins uh that ain't good enough. There's
- 25:20some programs that you got to be in the
- 25:22hunt. You got to be in the championship
- 25:23of the SEC. So there's a lot of
- 25:26different levels and as you say there's
- 25:27some coaches and that's where it goes
- 25:29back to what Terry's saying where the
- 25:30silverfields, the goalish, you know,
- 25:33those level of coaches uh will be given
- 25:36a chance if they got a good track record
- 25:38because as you said there there's just
- 25:40not a number there's just not that
- 25:42number of coaches out there that are
- 25:43ready to go.
- 25:44>> Yeah. You got to got you got to just win
- 25:46where you are. Well, before we get
- 25:47going, I want to sit there. All right.
- 25:49You've kind of watched the football
- 25:50field as they play this year. I've
- 25:53watched it uh as well. Uh give me two or
- 25:56three things people that you think will
- 25:57do well in the post. How do you think
- 25:59the postseason will go? Do you have a
- 26:00team team or two that you think can go
- 26:02all the way? And why would they go all
- 26:04the way?
- 26:05>> Okay, Terry. I I tell you what, I've
- 26:07watched this Indiana team. I've watched
- 26:09them go to Oregon. I I I've watched them
- 26:12play when they were behind when
- 26:14adversity is hidden. I love this Mendoza
- 26:17kid. And I love how hard and how
- 26:19physical Indiana is. And I can't believe
- 26:22I'm saying I'm saying watch out for
- 26:23Indiana. I think they're sound, man. I
- 26:26think they're sound and every I keep
- 26:27looking for flaws. I don't see I can't
- 26:30wait for this Ohio State because Ohio
- 26:32State looks like to me
- 26:35uh they got probably the most depth when
- 26:37you look at the depth of of Dlinemen, O
- 26:40linemen. You look at the speed the
- 26:43receivers of out of this world. Jeremiah
- 26:45Smith looks like the quarterback saying
- 26:48he knows how to protect the ball, get
- 26:50them out of the right wrong play, get
- 26:51them in the right play. I can't wait for
- 26:54that game. Uh because Indiana is going
- 26:57to be in this tournament and I'm I'm
- 26:59anxious to see where they land. I think
- 27:01they'll be good. The other two I want to
- 27:03talk about right now.
- 27:04>> Yeah.
- 27:05>> I want you to look at Texas these last
- 27:08few weeks, this this little Arch Manning
- 27:11now has grown up a little bit. He's
- 27:13gotten comfortable and they're playing
- 27:16better on defense and so I don't know if
- 27:19Texas can get in. But how about
- 27:22Vanderbilt?
- 27:23>> This quarterback Pavier this guy again
- 27:27we're talking about Vanderbilt
- 27:29really probably should be in this thing.
- 27:32I don't know if they can get in, but
- 27:34they're fun. They are fun to watch. They
- 27:36can run. They'll hit you. They're
- 27:38physical. I think co coach Lee's done a
- 27:40great job.
- 27:42Excuse me. But um Oregon, Oregon's
- 27:46another one. You got speed. They're
- 27:48quick. I love coach Lanning's attitude.
- 27:52He was a Bruins Award finalist. I got to
- 27:54meet him a couple years back. I like the
- 27:56way he's engaged, Terry, uh with his
- 28:00players. You know, players don't care
- 28:03how much you know until they know how
- 28:04much you care.
- 28:05>> One thing I've seen with him,
- 28:08>> uh those players know that he cares and
- 28:10they'll run through a wall for him now.
- 28:12they'll go fight for him. So, I I I got
- 28:15my eye on Oregon, Ohio State, and but
- 28:18the Indiana to me is the surprise of the
- 28:20surprise because I think this
- 28:22quarterback is special.
- 28:23>> You know, it's funny you mentioned
- 28:24Indiana. Indiana, people didn't know
- 28:26Kurt Signetti. When when my father was
- 28:28the head coach at West Virginia, I was a
- 28:30walk-on when we started. His offensive
- 28:33coordinator was Frank Signetti. Frank
- 28:35Signetti was Kurt's dad. And Frank was
- 28:38kind of a genius offensive coordinator.
- 28:40He was unbelievably knowledgeable. We we
- 28:43nicknamed him Frank Click Netty because
- 28:45he ran that projector back and forth so
- 28:47many times you couldn't never leave a
- 28:49meeting cuz he But that's the kind of
- 28:51thing Kurt Kurt was raised there with us
- 28:53about five years younger than me. But
- 28:55he's kind of like his dad. They beat
- 28:57I'll tell you a funny story. They beat
- 28:58William and Mary and Lou. My dad was
- 29:00kind of close to old Lou. Uh Lou was
- 29:02different. Not everybody got along with
- 29:04old Lou. If my dad and him were close
- 29:05and my dad beat him at William and Mary
- 29:07real bad and Lou got mad said, "Why'd
- 29:09you run the score up?" He said he said,
- 29:11"Lou, it's not my job to keep the score
- 29:13down. It's your job to keep the score
- 29:14down." Now, he said that he said that as
- 29:16a joke, but but Frank Signetti was
- 29:19probably out there out there because
- 29:20that's the way Kurt goes. He don't care
- 29:22about the score. It's going to be as
- 29:24much as he can score. And that goes back
- 29:26to I think uh just that's your object.
- 29:28That's what my dad said, Terry. Don't
- 29:30worry about whether you run it or score
- 29:32as many points as you can score and
- 29:34that'll help your defense more than any
- 29:36anything when it when it comes to that.
- 29:38But Indiana isn't and I'm kind of I'm
- 29:40gonna throw Georgia and I think Georgia
- 29:41is trending
- 29:43>> and and Texas like they rushed for 217
- 29:45yards. They hadn't been running well.
- 29:46They ran well. Uh and all of a sudden
- 29:49then when they began to run well, the
- 29:51quarterback became a better quarterback.
- 29:52It was amazing how that works together
- 29:55where he's throwing under less difficult
- 29:57situations. But I I like those and and
- 30:00uh it's going to be it'll be
- 30:01interesting. I love the playoffs. I
- 30:02guess I came from uh I coached division
- 30:05three, division two, division 1 doublea
- 30:07and we had playoffs, you know, and so it
- 30:10and I and and so I like the fact that
- 30:12that it has made the it makes last
- 30:15weekend was incredibly important to us.
- 30:17A lot of football teams
- 30:18>> that it wouldn't have been important to.
- 30:21>> No doubt about it. No doubt about it.
- 30:23I'm like you. I I I like the playoffs as
- 30:25well. Murray State gave me my first
- 30:27taste of it. And boy, there's a there's
- 30:29a few teams that I had I know you had
- 30:31too that think, boy, if we had that 12
- 30:32team, I'd be in that playoff and see
- 30:34what would happen. You know, I miss
- 30:36that. Like you said, we missed a couple
- 30:38things. We missed the playoffs and we
- 30:39missed that pay window. But other than
- 30:41that,
- 30:42>> other than that, you know, the the thing
- 30:45you miss the most is the relationships.
- 30:47>> Yeah.
- 30:47>> With these players, man, you miss it.
- 30:49And u this is going to be a fun time to
- 30:52see how this I'm really anxious, Terry,
- 30:54to Ronnie. I What do y'all think? I'm
- 30:57really curious to see how they do this
- 30:59thing Tuesday night with what's all
- 31:01happened, especially with the miss
- 31:03scenario, right?
- 31:04>> I'm real curious because I don't think
- 31:06they should punish them uh because of
- 31:08the change of coach. So, I'm I'm I've
- 31:10got my eyes set and my my recorder
- 31:13setting on this one. I want to see what
- 31:14these guys do on this one.
- 31:15>> Yeah, I think it'd be a bad standard to
- 31:17set. If they were to do that, I think
- 31:19they would set a bad standard for what
- 31:21they might do in the in the future
- 31:23because I don't believe that should be
- 31:25that's such a a disrespectful of the
- 31:27players that did so much for that
- 31:29program and the university that uh like
- 31:31you said brought Lane Kein in that gave
- 31:34him what he needed to be successful and
- 31:36uh uh and I you know I live in
- 31:39Louisiana. Be careful what you ask for.
- 31:41You just might get it cuz he he going to
- 31:43have if he don't eat crawfish now, he
- 31:45going to be eating crawfish pretty soon.
- 31:46And I'm going to tell you right now, cuz
- 31:48that's all they eat here. I eat crawfish
- 31:50all summer and fall. It seems like now
- 31:53that I moved down here.
- 31:56>> I love it. I love it. That's right.
- 31:59>> Houston, before we let before we let you
- 32:01go, when did when did Miss and Missouri
- 32:05and Vandy swap places with Auburn and
- 32:06Florida?
- 32:09>> Boy, I tell you what, Ronnie, that's
- 32:12what I was saying at the first of the
- 32:13show. I it's just hard to believe, you
- 32:15know, but uh you know, times have
- 32:18changed and I'm I'm I'm sitting there
- 32:20thinking, boy, I'd like to played Auburn
- 32:23back in my day right now. I don't
- 32:25remember him being like that on offense,
- 32:27you know, cuz they've always had a back
- 32:28LSU, same thing on offense. I always
- 32:30remember having that big Kevin Faulk or
- 32:32uh you know those big- time receivers.
- 32:35How about Justin Jefferson and Jamar
- 32:37Chase?
- 32:38>> You know, I don't see those guys. So,
- 32:41>> it's just a matter of time. I think
- 32:42they'll come back. That's the one thing
- 32:43you know about these programs. It will
- 32:45come back.
- 32:46>> Uh but again, now the the added scenario
- 32:49to it though, the little bitty thing
- 32:51there at the end is now your your alum
- 32:54your boosters have got to get involved
- 32:55in this NIL because it's been proven by
- 32:58Texas Tech.
- 32:59>> I mean, Texas Tech is scoring points,
- 33:02guys. And I'm anxious to see how they'll
- 33:05do. And I it just seems like to me their
- 33:08defense can run. I mean, but but how
- 33:10does this come about? Well, it's come
- 33:12about because people are paying money.
- 33:14>> Right. Exactly.
- 33:15>> And so they're they bought them a team
- 33:17and and so it's just uh those alumni and
- 33:20boosters, if you want a team, they got
- 33:22to get involved.
- 33:24>> Well, I'm I'm with you. I Diego Pabia to
- 33:28me, he would be the hands-own Heisman
- 33:30winner to me this year. I don't know
- 33:31that Mendoza probably will or or saying
- 33:34Ohio State because their teams are
- 33:36undefeated. But no quarterback this year
- 33:39anywhere has made the impact on college
- 33:42football on a team. First 10- win season
- 33:44in school history, regular season in
- 33:47school history. Uh and when I watched
- 33:49him every game you watch him, it's
- 33:52amazing that he makes very good teams uh
- 33:55not look as good on defense. So again, I
- 33:57I I I love Diego Pabia. I don't know
- 34:00that he'll win it because it's a it's a
- 34:02popularity contest and I'm not sure
- 34:04enough voters up north really want to
- 34:07watch Vanderbilt, but he has been a he
- 34:09has been an incredible quarterback.
- 34:11>> He has, Terry. And I tell you, I've been
- 34:13in Knoxville. I've been in that
- 34:15coliseum. That thing's rocking.
- 34:17>> And for him to go to Knoxville
- 34:19>> and he's he's got ice water in his
- 34:21veins. He And you said it. You said he
- 34:23he put the team on his back and he beat
- 34:26him he beat Tennessee in a hostile
- 34:29hostile environment. I got a lot of
- 34:31respect for Vandy and uh
- 34:35>> well Houston, we appreciate you being
- 34:36with us today.
- 34:37>> Thank you.
- 34:38>> Enjoyed it, guys.
- 34:39>> Great fun. I I enjoyed it. Best wishes
- 34:41to you and hope to see you somewhere
- 34:43down the road.
- 34:43>> You bet. You bet. Y'all take care, guys.
- 34:46>> Take care. I don't mind being labeled
- 34:48old school when you're when you
- 34:50associated with the Houston nut and the
- 34:51people like that who uh and you've got
- 34:53to go back and he had a football family.
- 34:55Dad was a high school coach and a
- 34:57basketball player at Old Miss years ago.
- 34:59His brother's a coach, his other
- 35:01brothers in athletics, a football
- 35:02family. I think the rest of them
- 35:04probably still coaching or or ADN or
- 35:07administrative, but it's a great
- 35:09football family and a great tradition uh
- 35:12that he that he has had. Uh, and you got
- 35:15to go back, he and I are getting old and
- 35:17a lot of people don't have any idea that
- 35:19we actually won a few games uh, back in
- 35:21the day, but he sure did. And three SEC
- 35:24champion, three SEC coach of the year
- 35:26awards, national coach of the year at
- 35:281A, national coach of the year at 1A.
- 35:31Uh, uh, and he Arkansas and Miss were
- 35:35the schools that he kind of, you know,
- 35:36worked around uh, during his time in the
- 35:40SEC and did a great job. And Frank Bro
- 35:42is one of one of the great coaches. Uh
- 35:44the Daryl Royal, Frank Broyals, they
- 35:46went along with Johnny Vaude and Bear
- 35:48Bryant, Wally Bud, some of the old
- 35:51coaches that will go back in the SEC
- 35:53history um that were legends in our
- 35:56profession.
- 35:58>> Yeah, no doubt. And it's it's going to
- 36:00be um you know, you talk about you
- 36:02talked about back in the good old days,
- 36:04it's it's a it's a it's a different
- 36:06world. I mean, there's I don't remember
- 36:09a time where Auburn would have hired a
- 36:12guy who was born in Russia, went to Ohio
- 36:14State
- 36:15>> and has spent his entire I mean, outside
- 36:17of the the last six years, he'd never
- 36:19coached in the South and if you count
- 36:21Florida as a South. Um I mean, it's uh
- 36:25you know, it's a different it's a
- 36:27different animal. It's going to be
- 36:27interesting to see how he does.
- 36:29>> Yeah. I mean, and that's what we'll
- 36:30probably get to now a little bit is the
- 36:32new coach, the new hire at cuz at at
- 36:34Auburn, and I don't know that that
- 36:36precedes the the game against Alabama,
- 36:38but we'll put that one off till we get
- 36:40through talking about the new coach
- 36:42because uh uh uh there are no moral
- 36:45victories and there are no close losses
- 36:47against Alabama. But it was a uh uh you
- 36:50have to walk away from Auburn feeling
- 36:52kind of proud of how hard they played
- 36:55under different coaches and how how how
- 36:58well they played and and I and I'm gonna
- 37:00have to take my hat off to the coach at
- 37:02Alabama. I don't know if I would he he
- 37:03he went for it on fourth and two.
- 37:05>> Yeah.
- 37:06>> Now they kick a field goal and there and
- 37:08I don't think it was a good call
- 37:09>> but but it was but it but but it worked
- 37:11out. But I'm thinking why are you doing
- 37:13that? You you got three minutes left in
- 37:15the game. Yeah, you know, they they
- 37:17haven't scored a whole lot of points. At
- 37:19the best, they probably at the best they
- 37:21might kick a field goal and tie it up.
- 37:23But if you go up, you're at least you're
- 37:25winning the game, but he but and if he
- 37:27don't make that, you know, I guess he
- 37:29figured they could hold him there and go
- 37:30to overtime anyway, maybe. I don't know.
- 37:32But anyway, I I would have I don't know
- 37:34that many coaches, but he did it to make
- 37:36a statement that he felt like they could
- 37:38do it, and it worked. and uh it forced
- 37:41Auburn to go down and have to score a
- 37:42touchdown and they were on their way uh
- 37:45until that fumble. But anyway, we'll get
- 37:47to that after we get to the new head
- 37:48coach. But and you mentioned it, Auburn
- 37:51hiring a coach from Russia. Uh and he's
- 37:54not even from above the Mason Dixon
- 37:57line. He's from Russia.
- 37:59But boy has he done a good job. And I'm
- 38:01trying to I've tried to look at all his
- 38:03background and what the possibilities
- 38:06are. And uh I think a pretty good hire.
- 38:10I think with what based on what's
- 38:12available uh coaches that have have kind
- 38:14of put themselves in a position to show
- 38:17what they can do. Uh the more I've gone
- 38:20back and I've watched a lot of his
- 38:21football this year at South Florida. I
- 38:24think they've got I think that I think
- 38:25they've got a coach uh that is on the
- 38:28verge of making big things happen at the
- 38:30power four level.
- 38:32>> Well, Cohen said when he fired Freeze
- 38:34that he wanted somebody with an edge.
- 38:36Um,
- 38:37>> and he he hired the exact opposite of
- 38:39Freeze. I mean, yeah, if you watch him
- 38:41and you see the, you know, I'm not sure
- 38:43if you watch the video, him and Tom
- 38:44Herman two years ago. Um, you know, it
- 38:47was postgame. I mean, he's he's
- 38:50certainly got an edge. Um, you know, and
- 38:52I knew somebody who worked with him at
- 38:54Central Florida and, um, he he was not a
- 38:57fan. Uh, and so I started doing some
- 38:58digging around yesterday and the more I
- 39:01dug around, um, the the words the the
- 39:04the things that I heard people describe
- 39:06him, you know, brash, arrogant,
- 39:09>> detailed, smart, um, hardworking. Um,
- 39:12but he's certainly got an edge. Um, the
- 39:15the the the brashness, the the, you
- 39:17know, the arrogance. I mean, that's not
- 39:19that's typically not tied to Auburn, but
- 39:20it's a it's a new day.
- 39:22>> Well, again, I and I I guess when I
- 39:24spoke, I did not speak in regard to his
- 39:26person. I don't know him. I don't know
- 39:28of that onetoone basis where of an
- 39:30arrogance, uh, cockiness, confidence,
- 39:33whatever you call it. I'm speaking
- 39:35strictly about where he's coached, what
- 39:37he's done since he's gotten to where
- 39:39he's gone, uh, and how he's done it, who
- 39:42has taught him, and where he comes from,
- 39:45and from a football standpoint, and and
- 39:47then I I look at his overall team stats
- 39:50and what they do uh, offensively and how
- 39:52they how they have done it. uh he has
- 39:55done a remarkable job at South Florida.
- 39:57They were not a team that had any good
- 39:59football before he got there the the
- 40:01previous two or three years uh when he
- 40:03went there. Now he went I think one of
- 40:05his early jobs he was a a graduate
- 40:06assistant Ohio State uh Northern
- 40:09Illinois uh which is kind of because he
- 40:11was in Dublin, Ohio where at a at a very
- 40:13good high school uh because I coached at
- 40:16Akan for seven years. I think I
- 40:17recruited at most of the schools there
- 40:19but but then he first full-time job was
- 40:22at Toledo. Tim Beckman was the head
- 40:24coach and Tim went to Illinois and took
- 40:26him to Illinois. But there was also a
- 40:28coach on that staff, Matt Campbell,
- 40:30because I coached against them when he
- 40:31was there. I coached against his head co
- 40:33his teams at Toledo. Uh when I was at
- 40:36Akran, he was with Ted Beckman. Beckman
- 40:37went to Illinois. Uh took him with him
- 40:40there. Uh then, uh Todd Campbell got me
- 40:44Matt Campbell got the head job at Iowa
- 40:45State and took him there. Now those guys
- 40:48aren't wild wide openen offensive people
- 40:50now.
- 40:50>> Yeah. fundamental football, run the
- 40:52football, good uh balanced offense, play
- 40:55defense, uh Midwest football. So that's
- 40:58what that was his background. And then
- 41:00he goes to uh UCF uh at I don't know if
- 41:03he had maybe had a job in between that,
- 41:05I don't know, but he ended up being at
- 41:06UCF with Josh Hypel.
- 41:08>> He was at where he got his his
- 41:11introduction to a uptempo, fast-paced.
- 41:15And then when Josh got the head job at
- 41:18Tennessee, he went there with him also.
- 41:21And I think that was the year they had
- 41:22that great offense. 21 I think was that
- 41:24fabulous offense they had with H.
- 41:26Hearnen Hooker at quarterback and all
- 41:28those receivers. I want to say that was
- 41:30that was but he got he he began to
- 41:33understand tempo up tempo uh run game
- 41:36vertical passing games uh spread your
- 41:39splits out uh as a wide receivers and
- 41:42understood and was part of a an offense
- 41:45that's very very explosive and a lot of
- 41:48people have come from that offensive
- 41:49style and that's where he left there and
- 41:52took the USF job I think I'm right in
- 41:54saying they left Tennessee and got the
- 41:55USF job that was not they had had three
- 41:58losing seasons I want to say
- 42:00>> I think they won four games the previous
- 42:01two or three years. I mean
- 42:03>> yes and then he goes seven and six wins
- 42:05a bowl seven and six and win the bowl
- 42:06then this year nine and three nine nine
- 42:09and three uh and going to a bowl uh and
- 42:13then they just do statistically
- 42:15offensively they just ate it up. They
- 42:17just tore it up and the quarterback
- 42:19there if you've watched them play much
- 42:20uh was fabulous. uh their statistics,
- 42:24their their scoring ability. They scored
- 42:25against everybody except I mean they
- 42:27beat Florida 18 to 16, you know. Uh but
- 42:31they were able to to do a lot
- 42:33offensively. Uh and it's a balanced
- 42:35offense. It's a balanced offense. They
- 42:37they had I think I want to go they had
- 42:39217 first downs running the ball, 217
- 42:41first downs throwing the football.
- 42:43Average 270 I think it was 270 yards
- 42:47passing, 221 rushing. So he it's it's a
- 42:50balanced offense, you know, and uh uh
- 42:52they're about 50% on third downs. So
- 42:55offensively, and I thought I say all
- 42:57this stuff offensively because I believe
- 43:00TJ Durkin has agreed to stay. Is that is
- 43:03that too early? Am I premature on that?
- 43:06>> They were meeting uh last night and and
- 43:08I think this morning. Um so I'm not sure
- 43:10>> and I'm sure they would I'm sure Auburn
- 43:13would want him to stay. Uh, I will say
- 43:15this, you've got to give the head coach
- 43:17the ability to make his own mind up. But
- 43:19I'm thinking, uh, and I did this when I
- 43:21went to Auburn. I was an offensive play
- 43:23caller. I called the offense. I ran the
- 43:25offense. I needed to have a defensive
- 43:28coordinator. And Wayne Hall was already
- 43:30there. And they had good defense. And I
- 43:34had that old philosophy, if it ain't
- 43:35broken, don't fix it. And so I felt like
- 43:38we could maintain some continuity on
- 43:39defense and I could get an offensive
- 43:42staff and surround myself with offensive
- 43:44people that uh believed in what I was
- 43:47doing. And of course Tommy Bowen was was
- 43:50the uh I retained Tommy because he had
- 43:52run the exact same offense. Uh Rick
- 43:54Tricket was a fellow that was close to
- 43:56us that we knew from way back at West
- 43:57Virginia. He was one of the younger then
- 44:01but tougher offensive line coaches. and
- 44:03and and Rodney Allison who worked with
- 44:06Tommy earlier from Texas Tech. If you
- 44:07remember Rodney Allison, hard-nosed
- 44:09running back coach, but the big thing
- 44:11was I said, "See, you know what? Thank
- 44:13goodness we were able to train. We
- 44:15retained Joe Wit and Wayne Hall on that
- 44:18defense. Rodney Garner was a graduate
- 44:20assistant. I made him a full-time
- 44:21assistant and I coached tight ends and
- 44:23be the recruiting coordinator." Uh, and
- 44:26then we had to bring it then you want to
- 44:27bring in what you can. Now, when you're
- 44:29at South Florida and all those coaches
- 44:32help you get to where you now are, you
- 44:35you want to reward them. But Auburn pays
- 44:37you to hire the best coaches in America
- 44:39and they're going to pay him to hire the
- 44:40best coaches in America. So,
- 44:42unfortunately, just like when I was at
- 44:44Sanford, he can't bring them all with
- 44:46him. He'll probably bring some of the
- 44:48ones that are the did the best job or
- 44:49fit fit the situation. But the sad thing
- 44:53is you can't bring them all with you.
- 44:54And and that's what happens. And I when
- 44:56I left Sanford and came to Auburn, it
- 44:58was clear I had to I had to bring some
- 45:00and leave some. I brought Jimbo Fischer
- 45:03uh brought Jack Hines and Jimbo Fiser
- 45:05with me from Sanford and Todd Straoud
- 45:08who was our strength coach uh from
- 45:10Sanford. But we were able to mix new
- 45:12coaches with coaches from the staff um
- 45:17and and with uh uh other coaches that
- 45:19I'd want I had wanted to work with from
- 45:21earlier times to come in. That's where
- 45:24uh uh Gor Gorsuch Gor Gorsuch is it? No,
- 45:28Gorsuch. Yeah, Gich. I want to say it
- 45:29right. Goulsuch. Anyway, that's what
- 45:32he's going to have to do is make sure he
- 45:33gets a good staff because that's going
- 45:35to be very very important. A lot of
- 45:37coaches you hire don't know how to hire
- 45:39a staff. And uh
- 45:41>> there is no question. He and he's
- 45:42brought his offense most of his
- 45:44offensive staff I think from Yeah.
- 45:45>> from USF brought Cody Burns who who was
- 45:48working with him. I'll I'll share some
- 45:49text messages I you know from from guys
- 45:51that that I
- 45:52>> I texted with last night.
- 45:54>> Um you know went went with Beck to
- 45:56Toledo in Illinois. Beg is an urban guy.
- 45:59>> Yeah.
- 45:59>> Um big then he went to Iowa State with
- 46:02Campbell. Big influence big influence
- 46:04there. Um he's very smart, articulate.
- 46:07Players like him.
- 46:08>> Um very serious dude. smart enough to
- 46:12have some swag and can be comedic, but
- 46:14make no mistake in recruiting and
- 46:16coaching decisions will be every eye
- 46:18will be will be dotted and every tea
- 46:20crossed. So,
- 46:22>> I mean, that's kind of what you want to
- 46:24hear. I mean, that's what you want to
- 46:25hear. I think, you know, I've always
- 46:26said cocky and uh confident and arrogant
- 46:29are two different things. Arrogant is a
- 46:31is a self appreciation of things you
- 46:34aren't qualified for. I mean, arrogance
- 46:36is being thinking you're good about
- 46:38things you really aren't qualified for.
- 46:40competence, cockiness or cockurity,
- 46:42whatever you want to call it, uh is a u
- 46:45is a is something that's based on fact,
- 46:48you know, and I think he's done his
- 46:49homework. And I could see a guy like
- 46:51that be you always picture a guy that
- 46:53his family got got out of Russia when
- 46:55they could and that he worked his way up
- 46:57from not having any background in
- 46:58college football till he came to
- 47:00America. But Dublin, Ohio and and is it
- 47:03Scotia? Scotia. uh the school that he's
- 47:06uh I forget the name of the high school,
- 47:08but it's a very very qual
- 47:11high school football. And you got to
- 47:12understand in Ohio football's very
- 47:14important. A high school in Ohio
- 47:17football is much older than it is in the
- 47:20South. I mean, we're talking about I
- 47:21mean, Masselin, Canton, Mckenley, some
- 47:23of the programs, but it's uh but they're
- 47:25passionate about their their football in
- 47:27Ohio just as they are in the South. And
- 47:29so, he was raised around it. worked with
- 47:31like you mentioned Tim Beckman, uh Matt
- 47:33Campbell, guy I coached against him when
- 47:35he was at Toledo. I didn't know he was
- 47:37on the sideline, but he was on the
- 47:39sideline in those staffs when I coached
- 47:41against him. And uh and then Josh Hypel
- 47:43I I it's funny, I was u in fact I was
- 47:46already in ABC Sports. I left Auburn,
- 47:48went to ABC Sports, but my dad played
- 47:50Oklahoma in the national championship
- 47:52game and I was able to to watch that
- 47:55game. Well, I was doing I would
- 47:56broadcast it did the uh did the uh
- 47:58pregame and halftime. Josh Hyperel was
- 48:00the quarterback of that championship
- 48:03game in 199 2000 1999 my dad won against
- 48:08Virginia Tech 2000 he lost it against
- 48:10Oklahoma.
- 48:12I I think if they could now I think if
- 48:15he could keep Durkin if if that would
- 48:18and I'm sure they I would think if he
- 48:20looks at the situation I can't say for
- 48:22sure because I got to say Durkin may get
- 48:24offered Durkin Durkin is going to have
- 48:26opportunities because I get a head
- 48:28coaching job. I mean with all these
- 48:30>> Oh no no and that'll always happen if he
- 48:31can get a head job that will always
- 48:33happen and it will happen if it doesn't
- 48:34happen this year it'll happen just as
- 48:36well at Auburn as it will somewhere else
- 48:38without having to move. uh if they in
- 48:41fact want it. Now, to me, you want a
- 48:45coach that's very secure and very sure
- 48:47of himself because they have no problem
- 48:48hiring a coach there by love here
- 48:51before. I mean, if you're if you're
- 48:52insecure or you you worry too much, you
- 48:56won't hire a guy from the previous
- 48:57staff. You're afraid they've got too
- 48:58many inside friends that you don't have,
- 49:01you know, because uh uh uh but I don't
- 49:04think that's the case. I I think you got
- 49:05a good defensive coordinator and I
- 49:07guarantee it. Uh, I don't care if he's
- 49:10an offensive play caller. He don't have
- 49:11time to sit in that staff room and
- 49:13defensive staff room other than to hear
- 49:15what the game plan is and and and give
- 49:18his point of view on a Thursday, not on
- 49:20a Saturday uh too much except on a
- 49:22critical critical uh timeout situation
- 49:24or go for it type of deal or things like
- 49:27that. Uh but um that will be
- 49:30interesting. But you say he's bringing
- 49:31his staff, most of his offensive staff
- 49:33with him. Yeah, it looked like last
- 49:35night he had um I believe we reported
- 49:37he's he's already hired I think four
- 49:38coaches from South Florida. So um
- 49:42>> you know it it's interesting that Cody
- 49:44Burns was you know an Auburn alum and he
- 49:46was he was already working with him and
- 49:47so um it they Cohen did a great job. Of
- 49:50course I guess the deal was finally
- 49:51finalized Sunday morning.
- 49:53>> Um but he did a great job keeping it
- 49:54quiet and I you know some all backed out
- 49:56went to Florida. Um but I there's just
- 49:59going to be some crazy things happen. I
- 50:00mean as many jobs are going to be open.
- 50:02I mean, I've got my list here. Um,
- 50:06I mean, it's it's and that's not even
- 50:08talking about, you know, coordinator
- 50:09jobs, assistant coach jobs. I mean, it's
- 50:11it's a it's going to be a wild wild
- 50:13year. And, um, you know, yesterday my
- 50:15phone started ringing. I think I got
- 50:17home about 3 o'clock in the morning,
- 50:18fell asleep fell asleep in a chair and
- 50:20got in and went to bed about 7 and the
- 50:22phone started ringing about 7:15. So,
- 50:25>> Well, and I'll be honest with you and
- 50:28this because I had Buddy Davidson. You
- 50:30remember Buddy with me?
- 50:31>> Absolutely. is I don't know who what you
- 50:33what I couldn't want to I don't you kind
- 50:35of like Brent Bledo who's on the staff
- 50:37there who you need to have somebody
- 50:39there that knows the the the ropes not
- 50:41the ropes about what's what's the
- 50:43background on this bad guy or the good
- 50:45about how to when you got to have
- 50:47something done he knows how to get you
- 50:48across the across the campus he knows
- 50:50how to get something from somebody uh so
- 50:53you need to find somebody that's loyal
- 50:55to uh you but also uh knows the program
- 50:58uh and I just I I know you and and I I
- 51:00mentioned Brent because Brent was with
- 51:02he was there all the way since I was
- 51:03there and has been loyal to Auburn
- 51:05through a several pro programs but be an
- 51:07ideal and there would be other people as
- 51:09well but I just
- 51:10>> Davidson you mentioned B he was the
- 51:12ultimate insider now he'd been around
- 51:14forever
- 51:15>> he was there with because I I g when I
- 51:17got to Auburn you got people understand
- 51:18when you follow Pat D there's a huge Pat
- 51:20D but there was still a ton of Suge
- 51:23Jordan people that coached and worked
- 51:25with him and so you had half the people
- 51:28that you dealt with were were from the
- 51:30judge
- 51:31Suge Jordan era, others from the Pat Dy
- 51:33era. And so you had a bunch of and that
- 51:36Bunny Davidson was through all of that,
- 51:37you know, and he was just to have him
- 51:40around. Uh it just cut through the red
- 51:42tape a lot. He knew where to get things
- 51:44done or who to see when you had to go
- 51:46see somebody. And
- 51:48>> some wisdom on that hall for for a young
- 51:50guy. I mean I
- 51:52you know I remember in in order I think
- 51:53it was Jimbo, Rodney Allison, Tricket,
- 51:56we had Pete Jenkins and Brother Oliver
- 51:58and Buddy Davidson all in the same hall.
- 51:59I mean that at uh as it
- 52:02>> a lot of football knowledge there, a lot
- 52:04of football wealth and uh uh but but
- 52:06again they uh uh I I like the
- 52:09possibilities. Here's here's what I
- 52:11would say to people. One, make sure he's
- 52:14an offensive coach. He's got an
- 52:15offensive resume that's really good and
- 52:17it's a run and throw. you I don't think
- 52:20if you are a great throwing guy, you
- 52:22know, Riley at Southern C, that's not
- 52:24going to that's not going to make people
- 52:25real happy at Auburn unless you remember
- 52:27to run that football. And I believe
- 52:29that's true. I think in the SEC toward
- 52:31the end of the year, if Alabama did
- 52:34anything better against Auburn, they ran
- 52:35the ball better than they had run the
- 52:37ball. You know, Auburn Auburn just
- 52:40dominated the statistics dominated
- 52:42statistics in that football game except
- 52:44two turnovers uh that Auburn had. L I
- 52:47had none. uh and a slow start. It was
- 52:50all a catch-up game, but but still
- 52:52statistically the defense was dominant
- 52:54in that game and offensive offense
- 52:56caught fire after getting behind 17 to
- 52:58nothing in that game. Um but I do think
- 53:02if you look at the uh the potential, I
- 53:05would say the first thing I would do is
- 53:07make sure as the new coach, I think
- 53:08you've got your two quarterbacks that
- 53:10need to stay. I believe a you know
- 53:13Ashton Daniels one more year and I think
- 53:15Deuce I think Deuce would stay too
- 53:18knowing he's the coach of the
- 53:19quarterback of the future although you
- 53:21never know how that's going to work.
- 53:22they're going to go after they
- 53:24everybody's going to go after and look
- 53:25at it, you know, but I think that I
- 53:27think those two could fit, you know, but
- 53:29I think uh I think Ash and Dan, you got
- 53:32to have the right one the first year,
- 53:33you know, and I don't know that uh I I
- 53:35my my impression as as kind of a a
- 53:38analyst is that Ashton was more polished
- 53:41because because he's been around he's
- 53:43played more, he's older, he played a lot
- 53:45at Stanford. Uh Deuce was just pure raw
- 53:48talent. Just pure raw talent. Uh but uh
- 53:52I got a feeling if you watched uh USF's
- 53:55I would I would if you're an Auburn fan
- 53:57and you want to get a feel for what
- 53:58you're looking at offensively, go look
- 54:00at highlight video uh go to a podcast or
- 54:03YouTube podcast and just pick a game out
- 54:05and and look at the highlights or say I
- 54:07want to see offensive highlights and and
- 54:09you get a 15minute video and that'll
- 54:11give you an idea of what kind of offense
- 54:12I think you're going to have. Now he he
- 54:14he brought in a quarterback and the
- 54:16quarterback was outstanding. He'll have,
- 54:18but I'm saying you get him a quarterback
- 54:20that he's got that could be dual threat.
- 54:22He had a he had a dual threat
- 54:23quarterback there at at USF. He'll want
- 54:26that dual threat quarterback. Uh, but
- 54:28I'd say if you got a great defensive
- 54:29coordinator, and DJ Durkin will be the
- 54:32first guy I think of, but don't think if
- 54:33DJ got a job somewhere and you couldn't
- 54:36keep him, I I would think he knows that
- 54:38he's got to bring in a great defensive
- 54:40coordinator. Uh, and then two, do you
- 54:42have a veteran quarterback or a
- 54:43quarterback that you can win with? and
- 54:45we see what happens when you don't. When
- 54:47you don't, you're right,
- 54:48>> you got problems. But when you do, you
- 54:50got chances. And I think Auburn's got
- 54:52two. If they can, and I think Ashen
- 54:54right now is the most polished for one
- 54:56more year, but you got to look at the
- 54:58way it's going to go down the road for
- 55:00those two guys. And then my third thing
- 55:02is, do I have a kicker that's going to
- 55:04because you're going to be a lot of
- 55:04play. If you're going to turn this thing
- 55:06around quickly, you're going to have to
- 55:08win close ball games. And your kicker is
- 55:10pretty accurate. you know, I know he was
- 55:11sick and he he overcame a lot of
- 55:13difficulties and I think he's getting
- 55:15his length back, his distance back, you
- 55:17know, but he is very accurate. Uh I
- 55:20think he was what 27 of 30 or he was he
- 55:22was he made all but three this year. Did
- 55:24a pretty good job. Uh but I think that's
- 55:27those are those are those are some
- 55:29quarterback and a kicker and then a
- 55:31defensive coordinator. Uh and then see
- 55:33what you got to fill in with the with
- 55:34the with the portal and all that you can
- 55:36fill in pretty good. Uh because I I
- 55:40think in today's game there's nothing
- 55:42that says you can't I mean when you're
- 55:43five and seven almost six and six and
- 55:45going to a bowl it's not you're not far
- 55:48from there. And when Alabama sitting
- 55:49there looking at a playoff team there
- 55:52you played you statistically you played
- 55:55them you know lights out just couldn't
- 55:57get the couldn't couldn't get the win in
- 55:59that football game you know.
- 56:00>> Well and the other thing is you know I
- 56:02talked to a couple of guys at Oklahoma
- 56:03and
- 56:04>> one thing that stood out to me was I
- 56:06said well how good is Auburn? They said,
- 56:08"Well, they're about like us." Well, OK,
- 56:11we're pretty similar. And Oklahoma found
- 56:13a way to win 10 games, maybe more, and
- 56:15Auburn found a way to lose seven.
- 56:17>> Um,
- 56:18>> and
- 56:19>> well, and that's a good that's a good
- 56:21point. I think Auburn was experiencing
- 56:23more quarterback difficulties
- 56:25>> early on, you know, right or wrong, but
- 56:28that's a fact was and and that things
- 56:30weren't clicking. Now, you can, you
- 56:32know, and I'm not gonna jump all over
- 56:34you, but whatever was going on with him
- 56:36and the quarterback and together that
- 56:38running the offense, it wasn't clicking
- 56:41and see at at uh Oklahoma, it was
- 56:44clicking some. You know, he got hurt
- 56:46>> and they had to win completely with
- 56:48defense. And I'll be honest with you, I
- 56:50don't think Oklahoma can get through the
- 56:51postseason because I don't think they
- 56:52have enough offense. I don't think
- 56:54they're good enough. I think the
- 56:55quarterback is good, but he's not a true
- 56:57dual threat. He'll pick up some tough
- 56:59yardage, but he's not a true dual threat
- 57:01quarterback in my mind. And as I watched
- 57:04that game against Texas, I said that
- 57:06doesn't scare people enough. You know,
- 57:08when break contain and outrun people and
- 57:10make people miss and all those things,
- 57:12he's just a good So, now I'll say and
- 57:14and I hate to to compliment Alabama,
- 57:17their quarterback looked more athletic
- 57:18than I thought he would be. He he looked
- 57:20pretty dang he looked pretty dang
- 57:21athletic uh running the football. Uh and
- 57:25uh credit to him. Um, but I think
- 57:27Auburn's got the got the answer as well
- 57:30uh on that. But Oklahoma did they won.
- 57:33You're right. They won with a defense
- 57:35that was very similar to uh u to
- 57:38Auburn's and and and they may have been
- 57:40a little better. I don't know if they
- 57:41are, but they're pretty dang good, you
- 57:43know.
- 57:43>> And they lost they they had a bad year
- 57:45last year at the five and seven, I
- 57:46believe. So,
- 57:47>> yes.
- 57:47>> Um
- 57:48>> well, they had the they had the same
- 57:50quarterback problem that we had this
- 57:51year. Uh but but again I think you can
- 57:54see I don't care where you are if you
- 57:56can see uh what happens when you lose
- 57:58your quarterback. Texas Tech is a great
- 58:00football team. Uh I mean Houston talked
- 58:02about it but they lost their quarterback
- 58:04one game. They lost Arizona State. I
- 58:05think they lost their quarterback got
- 58:07hurt and they played their backup and
- 58:08he's pretty good but he's not as good as
- 58:10their starter you know and they lost the
- 58:12football game or they would be
- 58:13undefeated you know. Virginia lost a
- 58:16late game because uh uh Chandler Morris
- 58:18uh uh Chad Morris's son got hurt,
- 58:20couldn't play and they lost that game
- 58:22and they've been and they won every got
- 58:24him back, they won. And it's not like
- 58:27you don't have two quarterbacks, but
- 58:28your one is usually better than the two
- 58:30or he wouldn't be one, you know, and
- 58:33it's more limited what you do. And
- 58:35there's an old saying in football that
- 58:37if you got more than one quarterback,
- 58:38you don't have a quarterback. But that's
- 58:41not entirely true because you do, but
- 58:43you might have two that are perfectly
- 58:44ready. You don't have two that are ready
- 58:47to go out there and win it all. And I
- 58:49think you could probably say that about
- 58:50most everybody, whether it be Indiana or
- 58:52Ohio State or whoever. Uh you're going
- 58:55to be a little bit more limited if you
- 58:56lose that starter. And and so uh uh I
- 59:00think you got to make sure you've got a
- 59:01quarterback there that can do that. So,
- 59:03it should be uh it should be pretty dang
- 59:05interesting when it comes to uh uh the u
- 59:08uh uh what the Gorsuch next moves. I saw
- 59:14a a a YouTube podcast, just a YouTube uh
- 59:17uh video of him flying into Auburn.
- 59:21>> Yeah. and and it made me think of how
- 59:23big how what he must feel because you're
- 59:25in I mean I remember coming from Sanford
- 59:28into Auburn and just being a part of
- 59:30that and uh and telling my brother Tommy
- 59:32who was on my staff I said God I got
- 59:35Tommy I can you can just cover for me I
- 59:37gota I got to drive to Birmingham get
- 59:39some things closed up it's going to take
- 59:40me you know all day and he said what do
- 59:43you mean you got to drive to Birmingham
- 59:44I said well yeah I got to get I got to
- 59:46get back over there and so I can get
- 59:47everything here done that I have you
- 59:49know it done not not done there. He
- 59:51says, he says, "Jerry, you don't drive.
- 59:53You got a plane." I said, "What?" He
- 59:54said, "You got a plane." Now, that I
- 59:57said, "Oh, I do."
- 59:59Because although my dad was a head coach
- 1:00:01at Florida State, I had never I had
- 1:00:03built my worked my way up and I never
- 1:00:05had a plane and I could get to
- 1:00:06Birmingham in about 20 minutes and be
- 1:00:09right back at Auburn. But, as I looked
- 1:00:11at the new coach come in uh uh at
- 1:00:14Auburn, Auburn's changed a lot. They
- 1:00:16don't have one plane that's a King Air
- 1:00:18anymore. They've got some citations and
- 1:00:20jets and uh and a runway that'll land
- 1:00:23them. You know, we had to if we ever if
- 1:00:25we ever flew on a jet, we had to fly
- 1:00:26into Columbus. We couldn't fly into
- 1:00:27Auburn back then. It was not the runway
- 1:00:30wasn't long enough. And uh and I can
- 1:00:34still remember recruiting nights when
- 1:00:35we'd come in at 12 or 1:00 from
- 1:00:37recruiting in Mississippi or or Florida
- 1:00:41and it was foggy and we we couldn't find
- 1:00:43the runway. We we'd go real low and
- 1:00:46because there's no hills, there's no
- 1:00:48mountains, so you can fly a little bit
- 1:00:50lower in the fog at Auburn. And we'd fly
- 1:00:52down low and we'd see, oh, there's a
- 1:00:54stadium. And we always knew the
- 1:00:55stadium's there. We know that the
- 1:00:57airport must be over there. But we
- 1:00:59couldn't never find it. And we would fly
- 1:01:02around a couple of times. I think, let's
- 1:01:03just go to Columbus, please. So, let's
- 1:01:05just go to Columbus. And uh but it was
- 1:01:07kind of neat seeing the new coach come
- 1:01:08in. And uh uh I really thought Auburn
- 1:01:11would win Saturday night. I really did.
- 1:01:14There was such an enthusiasm at the uh
- 1:01:18uh uh at at their the last two games.
- 1:01:20Such an enthusiasm and excitement and
- 1:01:22the players played like that. They
- 1:01:25played with incredible emotion uh
- 1:01:27physical and and got after it. They
- 1:01:30really got after, you know, I saw
- 1:01:33something on on Twitter last night and
- 1:01:34it said that that uh you know, I guess
- 1:01:37there's some truth in this that no fan
- 1:01:39base gives no fan base in America gives
- 1:01:41more and gets less back than all
- 1:01:44than Auburn.
- 1:01:44>> Well, in five years, that's five losing
- 1:01:47seasons. And I'm gonna tell you right
- 1:01:48now, if if if Kayla Debor thought he
- 1:01:52knew what it was like to play Auburn in
- 1:01:53Auburn, he didn't know till he was there
- 1:01:55because it was it was it was you could
- 1:01:57see it on TV. It was intimidating. It
- 1:02:00was impressive. It was nonstop. Um and
- 1:02:04uh it was making a it was it was a
- 1:02:06factor in the football game. And uh and
- 1:02:09uh I know I know Nick Sabin says it's
- 1:02:12haunted, but in a in a in a way that's a
- 1:02:14compliment and that it's it's a unique
- 1:02:17place and you better be ready to face a
- 1:02:19lot of things. And uh uh they used to
- 1:02:21say that about LSU when you played LSU
- 1:02:23at night there and and I and that they
- 1:02:26were haunted. I think actually it was
- 1:02:28because they had a they had a fan up in
- 1:02:30the stands that would blow a whistle
- 1:02:31every time there was a critical play. Uh
- 1:02:33and they lied about it not being true,
- 1:02:35but that's true. They had we lost to him
- 1:02:38one time. It was somebody in that stands
- 1:02:40>> 95 or I remember I forget
- 1:02:42>> it was 95 90 93 did 95 because that was
- 1:02:46that was when we were on the one yard
- 1:02:47line and Pat Nicks dropped back into the
- 1:02:49end zone to throw just a quick pass and
- 1:02:51the somebody blew a whistle in the in
- 1:02:53the endzone in the stands and all the
- 1:02:55linemen stopped and he got sacked. Uh
- 1:02:58but the official said we didn't blow a
- 1:02:59whistle you know and and so uh uh and we
- 1:03:02lost the game like 13 to nine. We lost
- 1:03:04it like 13 to nine or something like
- 1:03:06that.
- 1:03:06>> That same night the announcer I guess
- 1:03:08Jared Donardo was the coach and and they
- 1:03:10were they were getting you know they
- 1:03:11were back to being pretty good and I
- 1:03:12remember the announcer all night you
- 1:03:14know Cecil Cecil diesel and the magic is
- 1:03:16back. The magic is back.
- 1:03:19>> Well they got the magic is it's not it's
- 1:03:21not haunted. It's it's a whistle. Uh but
- 1:03:23anyway that that was a great atmosphere
- 1:03:25at Auburn uh uh Saturday night. And uh
- 1:03:29but before we go, let's there's some
- 1:03:31other huge hires in the conference. Did
- 1:03:34we did we hit the Lane Keifin deal? I
- 1:03:36you know, and I you know, Lane Kein is
- 1:03:38an outstanding coach. He's done I mean
- 1:03:39he he's become an outstanding coach
- 1:03:41whether he was or was not. There was
- 1:03:43something about him that made some
- 1:03:45pretty big programs hire him when he was
- 1:03:46real young and he flopped on a lot of
- 1:03:49those uh uh Oakland Raiders. Uh
- 1:03:52Tennessee, he left he he went seven and
- 1:03:54six and walked on them to go to Southern
- 1:03:56Cow and that's not a great year. And
- 1:03:58then he walked and then Southern Cal
- 1:04:00fired him and uh um and then I think
- 1:04:02even Nick Sabin fired him for getting
- 1:04:04too involved in the FAU job before the
- 1:04:08the SEC championship or the playoffs. I
- 1:04:10don't remember if it was which one it
- 1:04:12was. I played against him, but but uh I
- 1:04:15I don't think I I think Lane knew all
- 1:04:17alone when he was leaving. I mean, we I
- 1:04:19mean, looking at the situation, I felt
- 1:04:21like if he was staying, there was an
- 1:04:23earlier time to tell them he was staying
- 1:04:25if he knew he was staying. And I think
- 1:04:27so. I think he knew he was leaving.
- 1:04:29>> Well, he he probably did. And you know,
- 1:04:31you look at the situation at USC. I
- 1:04:33mean, you mentioned uh you know, I won't
- 1:04:34say it on the air, but a mutual friend
- 1:04:36of ours uh was out there and he said I
- 1:04:38said, "Well, what do you think about
- 1:04:39Ke?" He said, "You know, this is after
- 1:04:40he got fired at at uh at USC." And he
- 1:04:43said, you know, he said, I I
- 1:04:46he said, if if the if the guy's goal was
- 1:04:49to make everybody in the building from
- 1:04:50the secretaries to the players to the
- 1:04:52coaches to the boosters to the AD, he
- 1:04:55said everybody in the building hated
- 1:04:56him. And
- 1:04:58so I I I don't that that was not the
- 1:05:00case at Old Miss. Um and I don't think
- 1:05:03>> Well, he was younger. Yeah. And let's
- 1:05:04And I'm gonna give give him some credit.
- 1:05:06I mean, younger uh didn't know how to
- 1:05:09probably handle himself as well. I'm
- 1:05:11giving I u but I but I'll say this it
- 1:05:15got all the all the talk because he did
- 1:05:18a documentary about how his life has
- 1:05:20changed and how Mississippi Oxford made
- 1:05:22a difference in his life and it was his
- 1:05:26family was better the kid relationship
- 1:05:27he was better all these things were
- 1:05:29better and all along I think he said hey
- 1:05:32heck with this I'm bolting and I think
- 1:05:34to me I think Houston said it or we both
- 1:05:37felt it sometimes the the best job comes
- 1:05:40around at the wrong time
- 1:05:42>> and you just don't take it. Sometimes
- 1:05:44the best job out there doesn't come at
- 1:05:47the right time. So, you don't take it
- 1:05:50because there's a right way to do things
- 1:05:52and there's a wrong way to do things.
- 1:05:54>> And I just think that was the wrong way
- 1:05:56to do things. I think uh uh considering
- 1:06:00if and I imagine wondering how he felt
- 1:06:03when he went to FAU, would he ever get
- 1:06:06back in the big time again? I I just
- 1:06:08would I I'll never get back in the big
- 1:06:10time again or maybe it's over, you know,
- 1:06:11I'm just going to do the, you know, um
- 1:06:14and then Old Miss gave him a chance. And
- 1:06:16I think uh I heard that on somebody's
- 1:06:18podcast the other day. But regardless,
- 1:06:20he is at LSU and I live amongst the uh
- 1:06:23LSU Tigers. There's other Tigers. Uh and
- 1:06:27uh uh so I've been to Auburn where the
- 1:06:29real Tigers are and I've been to Clemson
- 1:06:31coaching where the real Death Valley is.
- 1:06:34Uh now I won't say that. I think LSU had
- 1:06:36the death valley before uh uh Clemson
- 1:06:39did. Uh but I'll be honest with you, you
- 1:06:41got to be careful what you ask for. You
- 1:06:43just might get it because when he steps
- 1:06:45into LSU, it's a different it's
- 1:06:47different now.
- 1:06:48>> It's a different place. Uh and their
- 1:06:51fans uh and expectations there are huge
- 1:06:57huge. And if you're not going to and and
- 1:07:00at Old Miss, they're not as huge. And
- 1:07:03you can have a year or two that are
- 1:07:05eight, nine wins and and not and not
- 1:07:08worry about your job security,
- 1:07:11>> but it won't take very long.
- 1:07:13>> LSU guy who who had been there, you
- 1:07:16know, the previous three years, won 29
- 1:07:18games. I mean, his average
- 1:07:19>> Yeah. And his season wasn't necessarily
- 1:07:21lousy when he when he lost when when
- 1:07:23they fired him, he still could have
- 1:07:25pulled off a decent season. It wasn't
- 1:07:26going to be what they wanted. But they
- 1:07:28like Penn State, they decided that
- 1:07:30there's only one thing you got. you got
- 1:07:32to win the SEC or go to the playoffs.
- 1:07:34And he was heading a different
- 1:07:35direction. But anyway, uh uh that's kind
- 1:07:38of what Lane wanted. And I I really
- 1:07:40think I'll be honest with you, uh and I
- 1:07:43don't say this because because to be
- 1:07:45critical, but I'll say it because I I
- 1:07:47I'm a football coach. I think Lane I
- 1:07:49think it's important to Lane to be the
- 1:07:50highest paid coach in the country. I
- 1:07:52think that's important. And LSU got
- 1:07:54making the highest paid coach in the
- 1:07:55country. And I don't know if Miss would
- 1:07:56not have, but I don't think but they
- 1:07:59still would have been miss in his mind.
- 1:08:00it still would have been this is the
- 1:08:02this was my step in the right direction.
- 1:08:05This was my stepping stone job. Uh and
- 1:08:09uh uh and it lasted longer than he
- 1:08:11probably thought it would last. Uh but
- 1:08:13they won and so they benefited from it
- 1:08:16and so hopefully they'll uh u and then
- 1:08:19they named their defensive coordinator
- 1:08:20their head coach I believe uh
- 1:08:22>> who also worked for Sabin.
- 1:08:24>> Yeah. Right. who also worked for Sabin
- 1:08:26and uh um and he'll just have to make
- 1:08:28sure he gets an offense that can do it
- 1:08:30because that's that's the key in that
- 1:08:31situation is that Old Miss uh with an
- 1:08:35you can't be average on one side of the
- 1:08:36ball anymore. Oklahoma got did an
- 1:08:38incredible job of being okay on offense
- 1:08:41uh but not great, but I don't think it's
- 1:08:43going to go very far through the
- 1:08:44playoffs. You know, I don't believe
- 1:08:46Oklahoma's one-sided football team is
- 1:08:48going to go very far. And but he could
- 1:08:50be the national he could be the SEC
- 1:08:52coach of the year. uh or or I mean for
- 1:08:55what the job that he did do, you know.
- 1:08:57>> Well, and it's and the other thing is I
- 1:08:59think it sounded like yesterday that
- 1:09:00most of the staff if not all of them are
- 1:09:02going to coach through the playoff and
- 1:09:03then you know Charlie Weiss Jr. um
- 1:09:05>> he left
- 1:09:06>> is the well he I think he's going but
- 1:09:09>> um they're going to keep him there like
- 1:09:10he's leaving but but he I think he's
- 1:09:12going to stay through the playoff and
- 1:09:13but Miss was in was enforcing 200%
- 1:09:16buyouts and so I think he's got a a
- 1:09:19seven figure buyout to leave Old Miss.
- 1:09:21Um, so it's going to be interesting to
- 1:09:23see. I mean, if if LSU is able to I
- 1:09:25mean, and not able. I mean, if LSU is
- 1:09:27going to pony up that kind of money. Um,
- 1:09:29and I'm guessing they will if they're
- 1:09:31they're spend if they're giving K.
- 1:09:33>> Oh, they are. I I would say without a
- 1:09:34doubt that was decided in the in the in
- 1:09:37the meetings that weren't supposed to be
- 1:09:38going on.
- 1:09:39>> Yeah.
- 1:09:39>> That was that was just because I don't
- 1:09:41think uh Lane was calling the plays.
- 1:09:43He's a pretty good offensive coach, but
- 1:09:45he's obviously watching the game plan
- 1:09:47sheet, but Charlie Weiss is calling the
- 1:09:49plays. Uh, and so he's going to pay
- 1:09:52whatever he has to pay. That that was a
- 1:09:53part of the negotiations, I would
- 1:09:54imagine. But I would I would have
- 1:09:56thought that if if if if Charlie was
- 1:09:58going, they would say, "Go ahead and go
- 1:10:00now." But but I don't know if they can
- 1:10:02afford to. But I'm just saying is uh at
- 1:10:04some point it's for the same reason that
- 1:10:06that Lane had to move on. If you've
- 1:10:08taken another job, then you need to move
- 1:10:10on. Uh but I don't know, you know, I
- 1:10:13don't know that they've got another guy
- 1:10:14that can call. Yeah,
- 1:10:15>> I think the AD said yesterday, at least
- 1:10:17I think I read that that he was going to
- 1:10:19stay that the whole offensive staff was
- 1:10:20gonna everybody was going to stay
- 1:10:22through the playoff and then, you know,
- 1:10:24I it's a tough situation. I I
- 1:10:26>> Yes. I I mean, well, I'm I'm not I'm not
- 1:10:29opposed to those guys doing it. I mean,
- 1:10:31to me, that that would try to help the
- 1:10:32players. Somewhere on the line, you got
- 1:10:34to think about the players,
- 1:10:35>> you know, and uh uh and I think that
- 1:10:37would be trying to do the best you can
- 1:10:39for the players, you know. Uh, and uh, I
- 1:10:43know I learned something from my father
- 1:10:44very early in my career. When you have a
- 1:10:46player that's a star, I mean, he and he
- 1:10:49is so good, he helps your team win. If
- 1:10:52he gets in a little trouble and you can
- 1:10:53punish him without kicking him off the
- 1:10:55team. You when you kick him off the
- 1:10:58team, unless you he just beyond he he
- 1:11:00can't be corrected. He can't be saved.
- 1:11:03Uh, you probably hurt your entire team.
- 1:11:05You know, if it's a mistake and you can
- 1:11:07run him stadium steps and you can
- 1:11:09punish, you don't need to talk about it
- 1:11:11publicly, but be careful that you uh
- 1:11:14that you make a decision that will hurt
- 1:11:16other people on the team. Uh when you
- 1:11:18can publicly punish somebody or make a
- 1:11:20decision, you know, uh my dad had a
- 1:11:22court had a and we'll we'll get going
- 1:11:24after this. maybe uh uh Janikowski, the
- 1:11:27the the field goal kicker that was a
- 1:11:29first round draft pick from Poland who
- 1:11:32he could kick at 50 yards with right or
- 1:11:33left foot, but and he went first but he
- 1:11:37got he got caught caught cutting curfew
- 1:11:40the night before the national
- 1:11:41championship game in in Florida at the
- 1:11:44Orange Bowl, I think. uh maybe the night
- 1:11:46before the night of the game, you know,
- 1:11:47and and and the press heard the press
- 1:11:50heard about it and they said, "Oh, now
- 1:11:51are you going to punish uh Dan
- 1:11:53Janikowski? Uh what are you gonna do?
- 1:11:55Are you going is he going to kick him
- 1:11:56off the team or or make him go home?" He
- 1:11:59says, "No." I said, "If he said, if
- 1:12:00y'all don't know it, he's Polish. He's
- 1:12:02under international law. Under
- 1:12:04international rules, we don't have to do
- 1:12:06that." And he said, and then that was
- 1:12:09it. That was his answer. He's under
- 1:12:10international rule. In other words,
- 1:12:12we'll we'll take care of that on our own
- 1:12:14and we don't need to be kicking out
- 1:12:15getting rid of the the best kicker in
- 1:12:17America when the players loved him
- 1:12:18anyway. But anyway, that being said, who
- 1:12:20else is out there? Any other job before
- 1:12:21we get going? Uh I don't want to keep
- 1:12:23everybody too long, but any other
- 1:12:25interesting summer end up going to
- 1:12:27Florida.
- 1:12:28>> Summer went to Florida. Stoops got fired
- 1:12:30last night. I saw his tube Scott and and
- 1:12:32that lo the last two losses were not
- 1:12:34good you know and um I don't know that
- 1:12:37you can
- 1:12:38>> make it until Louisville and
- 1:12:40>> I said I thought he might make it until
- 1:12:42>> yeah until the Louisville game it was so
- 1:12:44ugly and that's in instate rival and it
- 1:12:46was just not going to couldn't get past
- 1:12:49that and and he'll be and he's got a
- 1:12:51huge buyout
- 1:12:52>> so he's not you know he's it's it and
- 1:12:54sometimes it goes that far it's hard to
- 1:12:57turn that thing around you know you get
- 1:12:59two years that have been pretty South,
- 1:13:01then the next year is going to be it's
- 1:13:02hard to get guys out of the portal. It's
- 1:13:05hard to keep guys on your team. It's
- 1:13:07hard to keep coaches on your staff
- 1:13:08because they're worried about they
- 1:13:09better get a job while they can. And so
- 1:13:12uh he did a great job there and uh uh
- 1:13:15and so they'll get a change there. Some
- 1:13:17are all going to Florida. I will say I
- 1:13:19thought some would go to Auburn only
- 1:13:20because I and I wasn't listening to
- 1:13:22anybody, but I tried to put two and two
- 1:13:24together from Alabama. Uh wife went to
- 1:13:28school here. uh fits Auburn
- 1:13:31personalitywise more than at Florida.
- 1:13:34>> But uh when he when when u and then Lane
- 1:13:37Kein, I said, "Well, his personality
- 1:13:39fits Florida." You know, he just he's
- 1:13:40got that Spurer uh type of personality.
- 1:13:44Had some ties to Florida. Uh but uh uh
- 1:13:48that's why you almost have to sit and
- 1:13:50wait and say, "We'll see what happens on
- 1:13:51this thing, you know." So uh uh that'll
- 1:13:54be interesting. And who else do we do we
- 1:13:56got that anybody? And then uh Arkansas
- 1:13:58named, we talked about that with
- 1:13:59Houston, they named Silver Silver
- 1:14:01Silverfield at Memphis. Looks to be a
- 1:14:03pretty good hire for them. I mean, he
- 1:14:05beat them, did a good job at Memphis,
- 1:14:07and it looked to be a good hire.
- 1:14:10Florida State is retaining and I, you
- 1:14:13know, having so many family ties to
- 1:14:14Florida State, that one is just getting
- 1:14:17uglier and uglier because uh um Mike
- 1:14:21Norll, the the losses have been so bad.
- 1:14:25If you look at his postgame press
- 1:14:26conferences, it's a defeated man.
- 1:14:28>> Yeah.
- 1:14:28>> It's a it's it's a defeated personality.
- 1:14:31It's hard for him to stand up there.
- 1:14:33Huh.
- 1:14:33>> He looks like Freeze at the end.
- 1:14:35>> Yeah. Well, he and Freeze both it and I
- 1:14:37say this out of respect.
- 1:14:40Hughes probably been as relaxed as he's
- 1:14:43been in a long time because he was sick.
- 1:14:45He didn't wasn't going well. He really
- 1:14:47didn't have any answers. Uh and now him
- 1:14:49is he can lip sit back and say it's over
- 1:14:51and it'll get better. the days will get
- 1:14:53better as they go, you know, and we'll
- 1:14:55see how that goes. But, uh, uh, at at
- 1:14:58Florida State, they they're prolonging
- 1:14:59the situation, and I can't imagine how
- 1:15:02fast the players will leave, the
- 1:15:03assistant coaches will leave, or the
- 1:15:06school is talking about, and I I was
- 1:15:08going to mention this to Houston. Who
- 1:15:10picks your G this GM deal? You got to be
- 1:15:12careful who's running the show. You need
- 1:15:14to make sure the head coach, he's going
- 1:15:16to be fired for not winning. He better
- 1:15:18have he better run the show. He better
- 1:15:20decide which NIO guys are going for. Uh
- 1:15:23and there better be people behind the
- 1:15:24scenes telling him he has enough, but he
- 1:15:27better you better stay involved. That's
- 1:15:28to me that's just recruiting. Uh and so
- 1:15:31everybody's hiring a GM now. Uh and and
- 1:15:34if that guy's just giving the head coach
- 1:15:36good information, giving him the best
- 1:15:38possible information, I think that's
- 1:15:40good. if their school is making
- 1:15:42decisions for the head coach, you got a
- 1:15:45disjointed situation that you got to
- 1:15:47really watch out for where this guy
- 1:15:49decides who you're bringing in. This guy
- 1:15:50decides whether you keep the defensive
- 1:15:52coaches or you can't really do that. I
- 1:15:55don't believe yet and have the loyalty
- 1:15:57and the uh the the the type of
- 1:15:59continuity that you need to have in a
- 1:16:01coaching staff that loyalty as hard as
- 1:16:04this is to understand loyalty in a
- 1:16:07coaching staff is to the head coach that
- 1:16:10to the guy that hire it's not to the
- 1:16:11school secondly to the school. It's to
- 1:16:13the guy that hired you because there are
- 1:16:15different people that run things
- 1:16:17differently and you need to be loyal to
- 1:16:20the coach that hired you and to the
- 1:16:22style that he wants. uh and the things
- 1:16:24that he wants done and that's very very
- 1:16:26important. Uh
- 1:16:27>> and people don't realize, you know, when
- 1:16:29we got to Florida, we we had there were
- 1:16:31two coaches that Spurer didn't bring
- 1:16:33with him. Um and we were we had to keep
- 1:16:35them whether Ron wanted to or not.
- 1:16:37>> Um we kept most of the, you know, all
- 1:16:40the recruiting office, trainers,
- 1:16:41managers, all those things, they stayed
- 1:16:43in place. We had no control over any.
- 1:16:45And when they fired Ron, they didn't
- 1:16:47fire anybody else except me.
- 1:16:49>> They called me down the hall and they
- 1:16:50said, "Hey, look, you know, we're we're
- 1:16:52we're firing you." Nobody, not John,
- 1:16:54coach. Nobody got fired. They called me
- 1:16:56down the hall said, "Hey, we're letting
- 1:16:58you go because you're too loyal to the
- 1:16:59head coach." I said, "Well, if I'm
- 1:17:00getting fired, being too loyal, I guess
- 1:17:02that's
- 1:17:03>> that's what you got to be." Yeah. No,
- 1:17:04that's exactly right. I uh that's what
- 1:17:06you got to be got to be. But but again,
- 1:17:09uh but if you got retained by the next
- 1:17:11guy, you would have been just as loyal
- 1:17:12to the next guy because your loyalty
- 1:17:14goes to the guy that hires you. And I
- 1:17:16think that's that's very important. So,
- 1:17:18it'll be interesting how how that goes.
- 1:17:20So anyway, uh good good week of football
- 1:17:23left. We I don't know what time I have
- 1:17:25I've lost track of time because we
- 1:17:27started a little bit uh u how long have
- 1:17:30we been on here?
- 1:17:30>> We've been near almost an hour and 20
- 1:17:32minutes. We probably need
- 1:17:33>> Well, we've probably been a little long.
- 1:17:34People get tired of hearing us there,
- 1:17:35but we can pick it up next week because
- 1:17:37we've got the playoffs, the postseason.
- 1:17:39Uh we'll see. We'll have more
- 1:17:41discussions on some of these coaching
- 1:17:42changes that have been made and we'll
- 1:17:44know a little bit more about the Auburn
- 1:17:46coaching situation, I would imagine, in
- 1:17:48regard to their staff uh next time we
- 1:17:50talk.
- 1:17:51>> No doubt. And thanks to everybody for
- 1:17:53listening. Click like and subscribe
- 1:17:54below. It really helps us out. See you.
- 1:17:57>> Thank you. Now, see you next week.
