Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's almost Fens podcast. We're here tonight with a breaking episode.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Is late.
- 0:10Speaker 2: It's so late, it's like morning time on the East
- 0:13Speaker 2: Coast and a little bit better in Mountain and Pacific time.
- 0:18Speaker 2: People are dreaming right now, but we're not because you
- 0:21Speaker 2: have some breaking news. Trista is here with me today
- 0:25Speaker 2: to break down this news. It's crazy and maybe that's
- 0:32Speaker 2: the name for the episode. This is crazy.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Perfect title, Trista.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You started this whole thing, so you're the blame at
- 0:42Speaker 2: some level. We're gonna announcement. Let me just name it here.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Taylor Frankie Paul is named the Bachelorette for season twenty two.
- 0:57Speaker 2: It's official. The next star the Bachelorette, Taylor Frankie Paul.
- 1:02Speaker 2: You may know her as the star of Hulu's Secret
- 1:06Speaker 2: Lives of Mormon Wives. She has a huge TikTok following.
- 1:12Speaker 2: In fact, I remember three years ago, I think laying
- 1:15Speaker 2: in a bed with my wife as she showed me
- 1:20Speaker 2: these tiktoks, trying to explain to me what in the
- 1:23Speaker 2: world all the fuss was about. Remember then thinking, goodness, gracious,
- 1:29Speaker 2: this is entertaining for no other reason than it's sometimes
- 1:34Speaker 2: enjoyable to live vicariously through other humans who seem to
- 1:40Speaker 2: love to mix life up in a way that I've
- 1:43Speaker 2: never been familiar with. Now, goodness gracious joining the franchise
- 1:52Speaker 2: Trista thoughts.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Okay, so let me just say that I don't watch,
- 2:00Speaker 3: or I haven't watched Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. I
- 2:05Speaker 3: know that it is extremely popular. I know that she
- 2:09Speaker 3: is extremely popular. She's a beautiful girl. I think she's
- 2:15Speaker 3: thirty one years old, has three gorgeous children. She I
- 2:20Speaker 3: was doing a little research with what Heather sent and
- 2:26Speaker 3: it seems she's been divorced twice and was involved in
- 2:30Speaker 3: what they're calling the soft swinging scandal.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Do you know about that?
- 2:35Speaker 2: I do, But I would love for you to explain
- 2:37Speaker 2: she's been divorced once.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Just let you know you want me. Okay, she's been
- 2:41Speaker 4: divorced once.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I would love for you to explain soft swinging to her.
- 2:45Speaker 4: You so want me to explain, Okay.
- 2:50Speaker 3: So what I don't understand is why is it soft
- 2:54Speaker 3: swinging compared to swinging? Just because they had an agreement
- 2:59Speaker 3: that they weren't going to have sex with the people
- 3:01Speaker 3: that they were swinging with. Is that what makes swinging? Yes, exactly.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So if they don't have sex with their swinging partner,
- 3:11Speaker 3: then that's called soft swinging.
- 3:15Speaker 2: No penetration would be the official no penetration.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I just feel like it will be very interesting to
- 3:23Speaker 3: me to see what happens. She is very popular. Secret
- 3:28Speaker 3: Lives is very popular. It's a Hulu show, so it
- 3:32Speaker 3: makes sense that she is, you know, coming over to
- 3:35Speaker 3: Bachelorette World. They've never had somebody who's famous right from
- 3:41Speaker 3: ever as a lead, have they?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I mean they used to do. They used to do
- 3:46Speaker 2: like you know, back in your day. They're picking people
- 3:48Speaker 2: kind of.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Out of the firestone.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, a prince a prince, true, but she's like pop
- 3:57Speaker 3: culture famous, you know, like ever had someone who's not
- 4:01Speaker 3: already been on the show. So it's a change. Who
- 4:04Speaker 3: is This is definitely a big change, And I will
- 4:07Speaker 3: be very very interested to see if Bachelor Nation rallies
- 4:12Speaker 3: around her or doesn't or actually doesn't watch because it's her,
- 4:17Speaker 3: because she does. We just found out both of us,
- 4:23Speaker 3: Ben and I don't watch the show. So this is all,
- 4:27Speaker 3: you know, coming from people who don't watch her show.
- 4:31Speaker 3: So I don't know her per se. I've never met her.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I don't follow her on TikTok, but I am going
- 4:38Speaker 3: to now or Instagram. I am very curious to know
- 4:43Speaker 3: whether people are going to be turned off by the
- 4:46Speaker 3: fact that she was in jail.
- 4:48Speaker 2: All the show is used to this. We've had a
- 4:50Speaker 2: couple of we've had a couple of issues in the
- 4:53Speaker 2: last few years when it comes to legal matters. So
- 4:56Speaker 2: this show's cool with it.
- 4:57Speaker 3: It's fine, okay, great, okay, great, great on legal matter
- 5:00Speaker 3: and then the winning thing.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Restraining right, Yeah, not a thing.
- 5:08Speaker 3: The fact that she basically cheated on her husband even
- 5:15Speaker 3: though they were in an open relationship, but she cheated
- 5:19Speaker 3: on him because she.
- 5:21Speaker 4: There was penetration.
- 5:22Speaker 3: So I am really interested to just see how Bachelor
- 5:27Speaker 3: Nation reacts to it being her. Because she is part
- 5:30Speaker 3: of the ABC Hulu family and the show is really
- 5:33Speaker 3: really popular. My guess is that the older generation, like
- 5:39Speaker 3: my generation, may not watch, and then the younger generation,
- 5:43Speaker 3: who actually you know, they're big followers of her, are
- 5:47Speaker 3: going to watch because she's super famous in pop culture.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Okay, A couple thoughts. First, is a question to you,
- 5:54Speaker 2: when does she join the Bachelor at text chain.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I'm literal.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Ohie was thinking this earlier. I'm like, how do we
- 6:02Speaker 3: get her number? I mean, I will just be texting
- 6:04Speaker 3: Millsie and say hey, we.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Need to add her to the chain. She will be
- 6:09Speaker 4: added for sure.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, she's a part of She's a part of the group.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I have a couple thoughts. From the small amount of
- 6:28Speaker 2: polls that I've taken. People are fans of her, so
- 6:31Speaker 2: that's great. I don't know enough to make a judgment
- 6:35Speaker 2: either way. It does seem to me trista people are
- 6:38Speaker 2: fans of her because I don't know how else to
- 6:41Speaker 2: say it. I'll say it and get in trouble for it.
- 6:44Speaker 2: She's messy. She's messy. That's how people know her from
- 6:48Speaker 2: her show and her current time is. People have followed
- 6:52Speaker 2: along because of the storylines that have existed around her,
- 6:55Speaker 2: right soft swinging, the arrest, the probation and the pause
- 7:00Speaker 2: in filming, to the chaos that's caused with other people
- 7:04Speaker 2: on her show. It's messy, I think, is the way
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'm going to say it. Get mad at me for
- 7:09Speaker 2: it if you don't feel that way. I don't know
- 7:11Speaker 2: enough to make a strong statement on this. I have
- 7:15Speaker 2: never known the Bachelorette to be cheered for and watched
- 7:19Speaker 2: because of messiness. I think that changes the franchise drastically.
- 7:24Speaker 2: The franchise has always been about a pursuit of love,
- 7:27Speaker 2: even if people that are watching really don't believe you
- 7:30Speaker 2: can fall in love with the amount of time that
- 7:31Speaker 2: it takes to film The Bachelorette, it has always been
- 7:35Speaker 2: at the core of it. People have tuned in as
- 7:38Speaker 2: a family with their moms, as a sister group, whatever,
- 7:42Speaker 2: because it's the romanticized idea that possibly something could work
- 7:47Speaker 2: from this show. Messiness has never been the core driver.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It might be this season. I'm not saying it's not
- 7:52Speaker 2: going to pick up attention. It's one hundred percent going
- 7:56Speaker 2: to pick up attention. Is that what we want? And
- 7:58Speaker 2: so my question for the audience for Taylor, for whoever
- 8:05Speaker 2: great Taylor, I'm welcoming you into this thing. I hope
- 8:08Speaker 2: you find love from this thing, if that's what you're
- 8:10Speaker 2: really after here. I don't want anybody to come on
- 8:13Speaker 2: this show and their lives become worse for it. That
- 8:15Speaker 2: is not the hope, that is not the dream. That
- 8:18Speaker 2: is not why we've done what we've done on this
- 8:20Speaker 2: show for the last ten years, So I'm getting behind you, kid,
- 8:25Speaker 2: But where does the franchise go from here? If this
- 8:30Speaker 2: is this launching pad for this new era of The
- 8:34Speaker 2: Bachelor and Bachelorette to bring in a whole new audience
- 8:37Speaker 2: of viewers that they need to do, I'm not mad
- 8:40Speaker 2: at them for changing this up. They had to change
- 8:42Speaker 2: it up. They have to try to hit a home
- 8:45Speaker 2: run here, because if they don't, I don't think we're
- 8:49Speaker 2: talking about The Bachelor in a year. I don't. I
- 8:51Speaker 2: think they're already showing warning signs of that. But where
- 8:55Speaker 2: does the franchise go from here? How do they top
- 8:57Speaker 2: a Taylor Frankie Paul? How do they have a season
- 9:01Speaker 2: that is going to be more polarizing than any season
- 9:07Speaker 2: we've probably seen before. That's why people are gonna watch it,
- 9:09Speaker 2: That's why people are going to tune in. How do
- 9:11Speaker 2: you top it year over year over year? Right, Trista,
- 9:16Speaker 2: the show failed? I would I think even when Chris
- 9:21Speaker 2: Harrison was the host, because the tagline became this is
- 9:24Speaker 2: the most dramatic season ever, and they always try to
- 9:27Speaker 2: top the drama year over year over year, and they did.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Goodness gracious, they did for ten years straight. They topped
- 9:35Speaker 2: the drama. It might even been in the last episode
- 9:37Speaker 2: of the season, but there was something the fence, jump,
- 9:41Speaker 2: the podium, getting moved, cheating, scandals, whatever it may be.
- 9:45Speaker 2: They topped it year every year year. And my stance,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and I think many people's stances, the popular stance, was
- 9:56Speaker 2: that trying to top drama year over year took away
- 9:59Speaker 2: from the show. It took away from what the show
- 10:01Speaker 2: was always about. It pushed away viewership. So now we're
- 10:06Speaker 2: not fixing that. Instead, we're going a whole different different
- 10:11Speaker 2: direction where we're saying, we're going polarizing. We're going to
- 10:15Speaker 2: a character to lead the show that is going to
- 10:19Speaker 2: be a shocking person for so many of your core audience,
- 10:25Speaker 2: which is middle us. So my question is where do
- 10:30Speaker 2: we go from here? This might be a great season.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I actually think it will be. I think they're going
- 10:34Speaker 2: to get a ton of viewers. I think it's going
- 10:36Speaker 2: to be captivating. I think my wife is going to
- 10:39Speaker 2: watch because she's following this stuff on TikTok. Interested in
- 10:44Speaker 2: it maybe is a word, But where do we go
- 10:47Speaker 2: from here?
- 10:47Speaker 3: You're so right, You're so right, but you know, I
- 10:53Speaker 3: don't know. I feel like that's been a conversation for
- 10:55Speaker 3: a really long time, and they've been able to sustain.
- 10:58Speaker 3: They always figure something out, so I don't doubt that
- 11:02Speaker 3: they can't.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Figure out where to go from here.
- 11:04Speaker 3: But I, like I was trying to say, if I
- 11:07Speaker 3: didn't convey it clearly, is I just I feel like
- 11:12Speaker 3: the people who are traditional Bachelor og like you know,
- 11:18Speaker 3: and you don't have to have watched since the first season,
- 11:21Speaker 3: but who believe and watch because they love love like
- 11:26Speaker 3: I do. That's kind of like the you know, the
- 11:29Speaker 3: traditional Bachelor fan who like appreciate Ryan and I and
- 11:38Speaker 3: watch from the beginning and maybe not from the beginning,
- 11:40Speaker 3: but still appreciate it because it's love. I feel like
- 11:44Speaker 3: we've lost a lot of that because of the drama
- 11:47Speaker 3: I get. You know, I'm sure you do too, about
- 11:49Speaker 3: dms about the show. I get dms all the time,
- 11:52Speaker 3: or comments on any posts that I do related to
- 11:55Speaker 3: The Bachelor that say, you know, I don't watch since
- 12:00Speaker 3: whenever because there's just so much drama. It's just all
- 12:04Speaker 3: about all about the drama, like you said, the most
- 12:06Speaker 3: dramatic whatever, And so I feel like if they could
- 12:11Speaker 3: get back to just having it be about love. But
- 12:15Speaker 3: then there's like, well, is that going to be too boring?
- 12:18Speaker 3: I don't know, We'll have to find out. Like this season,
- 12:21Speaker 3: what's going to happen.
- 12:22Speaker 2: The new area of television is definitely not what it
- 12:25Speaker 2: was when the love stories propelled the audience to watch.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I get that right, And that's why I think the
- 12:32Speaker 2: show probably is looking at this going we have to
- 12:35Speaker 2: figure out something because we have a franchise that is
- 12:39Speaker 2: super valuable and has a namesake and a brand that
- 12:42Speaker 2: we want to last for the next twenty years. And
- 12:45Speaker 2: what we've been doing isn't working right. The Zach Shawcross
- 12:48Speaker 2: and Katie Bigger seasons that are love stories at its
- 12:52Speaker 2: core didn't work right. Love them, They're great, but people
- 12:59Speaker 2: didn't in They aren't following along. Those storylines are not
- 13:04Speaker 2: compelling an audience to watch like we hoped and wanted.
- 13:07Speaker 2: So maybe the switch up will be what the franchise
- 13:12Speaker 2: needs and desires, but it's going to be hard to
- 13:17Speaker 2: top it. It's going to bring in a whole new audience.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It is going those those poor ladies from the nursing
- 13:25Speaker 2: home that's so many of us from the Bachelor franchise
- 13:29Speaker 2: would go and visit during the premiere dates and pass
- 13:32Speaker 2: out roses to these people are gone, like where the
- 13:35Speaker 2: franchise is saying goodbye to them. That makes me sad.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I think this is a night no matter what, this
- 13:42Speaker 2: is an announcement that is pivoting the franchise in a
- 13:46Speaker 2: new direction. Good or bad. We don't know yet. We
- 13:48Speaker 2: don't know. I'm not going to make that statement yet.
- 13:51Speaker 2: We don't know. But it's pivoting to having our first
- 13:57Speaker 2: celebrity announced as the leader a show, and not just
- 14:01Speaker 2: so celebrity, somebody who is polarizing to this audience, the
- 14:06Speaker 2: audience that has known the franchise.
- 14:09Speaker 3: It is.
- 14:10Speaker 2: It is a switch up. It is, it's a change.
- 14:14Speaker 2: There's gonna be a lot of catch up. There's gonna
- 14:16Speaker 2: be a lot of searches on Google of soft swinging
- 14:19Speaker 2: and what does that mean? And these seventy five to
- 14:22Speaker 2: eighty five year old people are going to be learning
- 14:25Speaker 2: about what it means to watch your partner have sex
- 14:28Speaker 2: with somebody, well with you, with somebody watching? Right? Is
- 14:34Speaker 2: that what this is make an appen?
- 14:36Speaker 4: No, I don't think. I don't think soft swinging is watching.
- 14:38Speaker 4: It's just being with somebody else.
- 14:40Speaker 2: No, it is watching Trista, It is watching yeah, you're
- 14:44Speaker 2: I mean it's watching. See you're learning as we go.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I mean, I know about soaking, but I don't know
- 14:56Speaker 3: about soft swinging.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I thought it was just you were allowed.
- 15:01Speaker 3: It was like an open relationship agreement where you could
- 15:06Speaker 3: cheat on your partner, not cheat on your partner, but
- 15:08Speaker 3: you both agreed that you could go have relations with
- 15:11Speaker 3: somebody else. I thought it was like you just couldn't
- 15:14Speaker 3: have sex was the soft swinging part. I didn't know
- 15:17Speaker 3: that soft swinging meant you were watching.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Somebody could watch. You're still with your partner. Okay, you're
- 15:24Speaker 2: still with your partner, but somebody else can watch you.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Oh lord, do you know or do you know what?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Do you know what soakin is?
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yes?
- 15:33Speaker 3: I do.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I'd love you to try to explain that to the audience. Trista,
- 15:49Speaker 2: this is wild, I'm changing, this is a pivot, this
- 15:52Speaker 2: is a this is a whole new world.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Yeah for us.
- 15:56Speaker 2: To get behind. I'm telling you, though, there's a level
- 16:00Speaker 2: to me when like, I think my wife is going
- 16:03Speaker 2: to watch, I think millions are going to watch. I
- 16:04Speaker 2: think they're going to view it, they're going to be
- 16:07Speaker 2: entertained by it. I think they're ultimately my stance in
- 16:12Speaker 2: the show doesn't change. I hope she finds everlasting love
- 16:15Speaker 2: from this. Whatever agreement they have and whatever dance they
- 16:18Speaker 2: have in their relationship is not mine to interfere with totally.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I can be confused by it. I can be entertained
- 16:25Speaker 2: by it. I can be intrigued by it. I can
- 16:28Speaker 2: google as much as I want about what in the
- 16:31Speaker 2: world these terms mean and why they they invest into them.
- 16:36Speaker 2: But ultimately I can still root for Taylor Frankie Paul
- 16:41Speaker 2: to find everlasting love from this show. Yes, and in
- 16:44Speaker 2: the meantime, if it blows up on the way, so
- 16:49Speaker 2: be it.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm wondering about the guys because like who is
- 16:56Speaker 3: going to be cast as her crew of men, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 3: and like are they gonna like swinging is gonna come
- 17:05Speaker 3: up in the conversations that are had on the show,
- 17:09Speaker 3: you know what I mean, It's going to be a conversation.
- 17:12Speaker 3: So are like there are going to be guys on
- 17:15Speaker 3: there that like want to participate with other guys on
- 17:19Speaker 3: the show, Like is that going to be a thing
- 17:21Speaker 3: that happens, like, you know, against.
- 17:24Speaker 2: It could be the starting point to interest into a
- 17:26Speaker 2: whole new world. Yeah, The Bachelor I want to hear
- 17:30Speaker 2: the conversations. I want to hear the agreements. One thing
- 17:33Speaker 2: we know about the Bachelor franchise is they love to
- 17:36Speaker 2: overdo a storyline, and so we know that this is
- 17:40Speaker 2: going to be an overdone storyline throughout the season. There's
- 17:42Speaker 2: gonna be jokes, there's gonna be her promo video is
- 17:46Speaker 2: going to be outrageous.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Oh gosh, right, Yeah, it's.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Going to be so overdone to the point that we
- 17:54Speaker 2: as an audience become almost I'm in I don't know
- 18:00Speaker 2: whatever in the month is that this area is. I'm
- 18:02Speaker 2: wondering if I'll become desensitized to this Right now, it's
- 18:06Speaker 2: shocking to me. It's late, yeah, but it's shocking in
- 18:10Speaker 2: a lot of ways. I wonder in a few months
- 18:12Speaker 2: after this season's done, if I'm going to become desensitized
- 18:17Speaker 2: to the shock of these storylines, which will be very interesting.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Because we all will do it's because yeah, you're right,
- 18:25Speaker 3: you're so right, And you know what, like this storyline,
- 18:31Speaker 3: like you said, it's behind closed doors.
- 18:33Speaker 4: It's what they decided as a couple. Whatever.
- 18:36Speaker 3: That's their that's their relationship, that's their life, and I
- 18:41Speaker 3: fully fully support her. I believe everyone deserves love, and
- 18:45Speaker 3: you know I'm here for it. I'm here to support
- 18:48Speaker 3: her as I do all of the Bachelorette leeds. But
- 18:51Speaker 3: I'm just really interested to see how she'll be like
- 18:56Speaker 3: not accepted, how she'll be portrayed, and how people will
- 19:01Speaker 3: will think of her and.
- 19:03Speaker 4: What goes down.
- 19:04Speaker 3: I mean, we're all gonna be talking about her around
- 19:05Speaker 3: the water cooler, that is for sure.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Hopefully the show brings in millions of new viewers and
- 19:11Speaker 2: we have another ten year run on the Almost Famous podcast,
- 19:14Speaker 2: because goodness gracious, it keeps the lights on in my house,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and I am thankful for that. No matter what's happening
- 19:23Speaker 2: behind the scenes, as long as this thing exists, I'm
- 19:26Speaker 2: gonna have a boy. The Bachelorette is rumored right now.
- 19:31Speaker 2: We don't have a clear date, but it's rumored to
- 19:33Speaker 2: be airing premiering early twenty twenty six. That's kind of
- 19:38Speaker 2: our guesses, so let's just keep it easy. Somewhere in
- 19:41Speaker 2: the first six months of twenty twenty six, The Bachelorette
- 19:45Speaker 2: with Taylor Frankie Paul as the lead, will be premiering
- 19:48Speaker 2: on ABC. Trista, thanks for jumping on so late. Tonight again,
- 19:52Speaker 2: we have a big announcement from the Secret Lives of
