- 0:49May the fourth be with him. Yeah, right.
- 0:51And the name XAA 12 Musk broke. It down.
- 0:54Yeah. The a is pronounced ash.
- 0:56And a 12 is after the Archangel 12, which he called the
- 1:00precursor to the Sr. 71. The coolest plane ever, in his
- 1:04words. And he's right about the
- 1:05history, too. The Sr. 71 came out of ACIA
- 1:08program called Archangel. So there's layers there.
- 1:11Layers. Yeah, history, tech, it's all
- 1:13packed in. But what about having a kid
- 1:15right now? He seemed almost more
- 1:18appreciative. Yeah, he suggested that maybe
- 1:20being older, having it happen during this global craziness, it
- 1:24made him value it more. He said something about seeing
- 1:27kids differently now, like little love packages.
- 1:30Little love bugs? Yeah, a change from how he might
- 1:33have viewed them before. That personal side, it kind of
- 1:35leads into his thinking about intelligence, doesn't it?
- 1:38AI and the brain. It does seem connected.
- 1:41He talked about spending time on AI neural Nets.
- 1:44Defining A neural net simply as a net of neurons.
- 1:47And calling humans the original gangster of the neural net,
- 1:50which is a very Musk way to put. It definitely.
- 1:53So is AI AI development trying to copy the brain exactly?
- 1:57Well, he used that submarine analogy right?
- 1:58A sub doesn't swim like a fish. Meaning AI doesn't have to think
- 2:02exactly like a human brain to be intelligent.
- 2:05Exactly. But he also pointed out that
- 2:08fundamentally, AI neural Nets and our brains neural Nets, they
- 2:13share things. Like layers of neurons.
- 2:15Layers of neurons, Yeah. And back propagation, that
- 2:18crucial learning mechanism where the network adjusts based on
- 2:22errors. OK, so similarities in the
- 2:24learning process even if the overall structure isn't
- 2:27identical? Precisely.
- 2:28It's mimicking aspects of brain development, but it's also it's
- 2:32own thing. Let's shift gears a bit.
- 2:34Selling his stuff, houses, possessions.
- 2:37Right, a pretty big move wanting fewer material things.
- 2:40You said they weigh you down. And are an attack vector, which
- 2:43is interesting framing. Very.
- 2:45So the plan is to rent, keep only sentimental things, yeah.
- 2:49Rent. Keep things with real meaning,
- 2:50like Gene Wilder's old house. He wanted to preserve that.
- 2:53And a couple of Tesla's, he said for testing.
- 2:56Right. For product testing, yeah, but
- 2:57mostly shedding the physical assets.
- 2:59He also talked about the word billionaire becoming like a
- 3:02pejorative. He framed his wealth differently
- 3:06as organizing people to make better products, better
- 3:08services. Contrasting it with just
- 3:10allocating capital like Warren Buffett, which he finds less
- 3:14interesting apparently. Yeah, he really emphasized
- 3:16making things. Yeah, manufacturing.
- 3:19Worried the US puts too much talent into finance and law?
- 3:22Seems like it. He thinks the pandemic kind of
- 3:24underscored how important actually producing physical
- 3:27goods is. And the houses, it was a gradual
- 3:30thing, realizing he just wasn't using them.
- 3:32Pretty much except for the Gene Wilder house, which he
- 3:35specifically wanted to save from being torn down.
- 3:38But didn't he buy some properties because of privacy
- 3:40issues initially? He did mention that, yeah, an
- 3:43interesting twist. The need for privacy led to more
- 3:46property, which he now sees as baggage.
- 3:48And the dream house idea? Sort of.
- 3:52Faded. It evolved, yeah, into
- 3:54prioritizing Mars. Mars versus a house, OK.
- 3:56It came down to time allocation, he said.
- 3:59Where does he put his energy? Rockets, Sustainable energy,
- 4:03Those are the big goals. Makes sense.
- 4:04SpaceX and Tesla are the main focus.
- 4:07Boring Company, Neuralink, less of his brain cycles.
- 4:10That's how we put it, yeah, Important, but not demanding the
- 4:13same constant attention right now.
- 4:14Which brings us neatly to Neuralink.
- 4:17This is where it gets really sci-fi.
- 4:18Absolutely. And the timeline he gave back
- 4:20then? Yeah, less than a year for a
- 4:22potential human implant. Wow and low rejection risk like
- 4:26heart monitors. That was his comparison.
- 4:28Yeah, deep brain stimulation devices, things already used.
- 4:32He seemed confident. Describe the first version.
- 4:34Again, not major surgery. No implanted flush with the
- 4:36skull like an inch diameter hole.
- 4:39Basically tiny threads inserted by a robot.
- 4:42Exactly. Very carefully done.
- 4:44Avoiding veins, Arteries. Super precise.
- 4:47The potential applications restoring eyesight even without
- 4:51an optic. Nerve that was mentioned, yeah,
- 4:52Hearing to limb function for quadriplegics via a neural
- 4:56shunt. Those were near term
- 4:57possibilities, he discussed. But also cognitive stuff, fixing
- 5:01brain injuries, epilepsy. Right Restoring speech after a
- 5:05stroke may be helping with memory loss and Alzheimer's.
- 5:08What's the mechanism? He described it as fixing broken
- 5:11circuits in the brain, basically repairing or bypassing damaged
- 5:14neural pathways. And the long term vision.
- 5:17Full AI symbiosis, but optional. Optional.
- 5:20Yes. He used that Doctor Manhattan
- 5:23analogy. Once you have those abilities,
- 5:26would you want to go back to being stupid?
- 5:30A provocative way to put it. So this could fundamentally
- 5:33change how we interact. That's the implication potential
- 5:35for nonverbal communication. Universal Language.
- 5:39Because compressing thoughts into words, you lose
- 5:42information. Inevitably, yeah.
- 5:45So that this could allow like recise super fast communication
- 5:49mind to mind. Essentially, what does that do
- 5:51to language as we know it? Hard to say right?
- 5:54But he's clear the near term focus is medical solving brain
- 5:58injuries. But that timeline for maybe not
- 6:00needing to talk 5 to 10 years best.
- 6:03Case that was his speculation, yeah, with accelerated
- 6:05development, it's mind bending. Leading to thoughts about future
- 6:08humans looking like, you know, classic aliens.
- 6:10Big heads, less muffle. He threw that out there.
- 6:13Yeah. If we communicate non verbally,
- 6:15maybe mouths become less necessary over evolutionary
- 6:17time. Speculation, obviously.
- 6:19And saving your brain state like a video game save recalling full
- 6:22sensory memories. That concept came up, which then
- 6:26touches on simulation theory. Is reality even, you know, real
- 6:32in the way we think? Leading to the ultimate
- 6:34question, what is consciousness? Right from quarks to sentient
- 6:39hydrogen, as he put it. It's a huge philosophical
- 6:42question. Definitely, and that sort of
- 6:44brings us to the more immediate fragility he sees in
- 6:47civilization, especially highlighted by COVID-19.
- 6:50Yeah, the pandemic was a big topic.
- 6:51You'd seen it unfolding in China before it really hit the US
- 6:54hard. And his take was that the
- 6:56initial death rate estimates were too high.
- 6:58Significantly too high, he thought.
- 7:01Maybe an order of magnitude less than Early WHO figures.
- 7:04And that it hit specific groups harder, older people, those with
- 7:08comorbidities. That was his observation, yes.
- 7:10He also questioned if the lockdowns, once started, were
- 7:13hard to adjust even as new data came in.
- 7:15He mentioned weird situations like some hospitals being
- 7:18overrun while others were half empty, furloughing staff.
- 7:21And the impact of delaying other medical procedures, he felt that
- 7:25wasn't being discussed enough. So a perception that the public
- 7:28realization shifted that it wasn't quite as deadly overall
- 7:32as first feared. That seemed to be his view
- 7:34regarding masks and lockdowns. He was a bit nuanced.
- 7:38Good hygiene, obviously good masks if you're sick like in
- 7:41other countries. Right.
- 7:42Even Joe. Maybe men got it more due to
- 7:45worse hygiene. A bit tongue in cheek I think.
- 7:48Silver Linings though. Better hygiene awareness, faster
- 7:52future pandemic response. You saw potential positives,
- 7:55Yeah, vaccine tech understanding virus is better, but his Free
- 7:59America Now tweets caused a stir.
- 8:01Yeah, he got pushed back. He called Twitter a meme war
- 8:04zone, but also important for free expression.
- 8:07He brought up a CNN ventilator story as an example of media he
- 8:10found annoying. Finding unbiased news is tough,
- 8:13he argued. Mention trusting individual
- 8:15reporters more, like Matt Taibbi.
- 8:16And so the whole COVID situation is showing how hard it is to
- 8:19interpret data in real time. He definitely expressed concerns
- 8:22about civil liberties being infringed by mandates.
- 8:25A big theme for him individual choice versus government
- 8:28compulsion and the economic damage from lockdowns.
- 8:32His view seemed based on the low fatality rate he believed was
- 8:35evident from China early on. Although he also questioned the
- 8:39info from China and WHO. It's complex.
- 8:42He leaned on Tesla's experience, too.
- 8:45No deaths among thousands of employees in China.
- 8:47That was a data point he found significant.
- 8:49Yeah, he worried about the whole thing becoming politicized.
- 8:52But stressed civil liberties above all.
- 8:54Consistently yes, and noted things were moving towards
- 8:58opening up anyway. His main plea seemed to be for
- 9:01clearer data, right? Absolutely distinguished
- 9:03diagnosed cases from symptomatic ones to clarify cause of death.
- 9:06Was it COVID primary or incidental?
- 9:09And he mentioned potential financial incentives for
- 9:12hospitals to list deaths as COVID related.
- 9:15Right, his argument was basically clear up the data
- 9:18because the current picture might be inflating the numbers
- 9:20and prolonging restrictions unnecessarily.
- 9:23Adjusting to the reality of, in his view, lower mortality,
- 9:27comparing it to flu smoking. Using metrics like life years
- 9:30lost, noting the average age of death.
- 9:33The focus, he argued, should be protecting the vulnerable, the
- 9:36elderly, maybe even from family members with mild cases.
- 9:40Right. He also touched on boosting
- 9:41immunity. Vitamin C heat shock proteins.
- 9:44You mentioned a study linking being overweight to worse COVID
- 9:47outcomes. Which led to a tangent on diet
- 9:49and exercise. Briefly, yeah.
- 9:51Balancing enjoying food with longevity.
- 9:53Portion control, Intermittent fasting, not eating late.
- 9:56His own exercise lifting treadmill with shows.
- 9:59Not a huge fan but does it? And his martial arts background?
- 10:03Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, even a bit of BJJ.

- 10:14doing jiu jitsu now. OK, quick update on Tesla before

- 10:25Those are priorities. Roser's dessert, but it's

- 11:07beforehand probably cracked it, which is why the ball caused
- 11:11more damage, but it didn't go through.
- 11:13Hindsight is 2020 should have thrown the ball first.
