Latest / The Gathering Line / Guernsey’s Pipe Squeeze: Brent Rises, Spot Rail Stays Shut
Transcript
- 0:00Wednesday, October twenty first.
- 0:02Here's what moved overnight and what it means for your barrels.
- 0:05Global first.
- 0:07Brent is up two dollars and six cents, one point nine percent,
- 0:11at a hundred and ten dollars and eighty five cents as of mid morning London,
- 0:14per Reuters.
- 0:15That's hovering just under five month highs.
- 0:18The driver is Iran.
- 0:20President Pezeshkian told state media the U S cannot expect dialogue while it
- 0:24blockades and threatens Iran, and Foreign Minister Araqchi told the Financial Times
- 0:29Iran is fully prepared to defend itself.
- 0:32That undid Tuesday's pullback, when talk of Pakistani mediation took some air out of
- 0:37the market.
- 0:38Kpler counts at least eighteen vessel attacks over two weeks,
- 0:41and LSEG warns the targeting now reaches the Gulf of Oman, which puts regional
- 0:46loadings and ship to ship transfers at risk.
- 0:49Separately, the Houthis claimed strikes on Aramco's Yanbu site and the Shaybah
- 0:53field.
- 0:54Saudi officials haven't confirmed operational damage, so treat that as a claim.
- 0:58Freight is the piece that touches you.
- 1:01R B N reports a very large crude carrier from the Gulf Coast to China hit a record
- 1:06of about eighty one million dollars earlier this month, and has eased to just over
- 1:11sixty five million as of Monday.
- 1:14Still extreme.
- 1:16On policy, O P E C plus baselines stay frozen through November ahead of the November
- 1:21first ministerial.
- 1:23The I E A agreed to speed up a stock release of up to a hundred million barrels,
- 1:27diesel first, though analysts said earlier that figure isn't necessarily fresh
- 1:33supply.
- 1:34France is putting ten million barrels of diesel into the market.
- 1:37North America.
- 1:39Western Canadian Select for November at Hardisty is flat, twenty five dollars and
- 1:44fifty to fifty five cents under W T I.
- 1:48Export trunklines out of Canada run near ninety three percent full.
- 1:52Trans Mountain is capped near sixty percent, about four hundred twenty five thousand
- 1:57barrels per day, because trans Pacific tanker freight shuts the arbitrage to Asia.
- 2:02My read: that is the same freight number I just gave you, showing up as a Canadian
- 2:07egress problem.
- 2:09And Enbridge's Express is full at two hundred eighty thousand barrels per day into
- 2:13Casper.
- 2:14Remember that number, it matters at Gern zee.
- 2:17Mexico, nothing material.
- 2:19United States.
- 2:20The E I A Weekly Petroleum Status Report lands at ten thirty Eastern.
- 2:25Market sources citing A P I data reported a crude draw of four point nine three
- 2:30million barrels for the week ending October sixteenth, against a consensus of a one
- 2:34point three million draw, with gasoline and distillate down too.
- 2:38A P I is not the official number, so hold your view until E I A prints.
- 2:43For reference, last week's E I A showed commercial crude down eight point five five
- 2:48seven million to four hundred fifteen point five seven seven million,
- 2:51versus an expected draw of three tenths of a million.
- 2:55Cushing built one point eight six two million.
- 2:58The Rockies, PADD four, built three hundred fifty eight thousand barrels to twenty
- 3:02two point seven one zero million.
- 3:04On price, picking up from yesterday: the November W T I contract expired Tuesday at
- 3:10a hundred and three sixty six, and the new prompt month is up two dollars and
- 3:13thirteen cents at ninety nine ninety five.
- 3:16Brent over W T I is about ten ninety.
- 3:20The Department of Energy is offering to loan up to three hundred fifteen thousand
- 3:23barrels from the one million barrel Northeast heating oil reserve,
- 3:27with diesel above six fifty a gallon, per Reuters.
- 3:30The Strategic Petroleum Reserve sits near two hundred eighty three million barrels,
- 3:35the lowest since nineteen eighty two.
- 3:38Friday's Baker Hughes count was flat at six hundred three, with Uinta gains
- 3:42offsetting the Permian and Haynesville.
- 3:44Pending regulatory review: Enbridge's two point five five billion dollar Tallgrass
- 3:49crude deal, which includes Pony Express, and Hess Midstream's two hundred million
- 3:53dollar purchase of Chevron's D J Basin gathering, with a twenty percent Saddlehorn
- 3:57stake.
- 3:58Uinta Basin.
- 3:59Yellow wax wellhead postings hold at ten to fourteen dollars under Cushing.
- 4:04Delivered Gulf Coast wax is indicated around W T I plus three twenty.
- 4:09Take insulated railcar freight of sixteen to eighteen dollars and the basin netback
- 4:13is eighty five fifteen to eighty seven fifteen, twelve eighty to fourteen eighty
- 4:18under Cushing.
- 4:19Salt Lake City postings match or beat that, so spot rail stays shut.
- 4:23Five Salt Lake refineries are running full on wax, about eighty thousand barrels per
- 4:28day.
- 4:29Loadings are flat near a hundred and fifteen thousand, held up by minimum volume
- 4:32commitments.
- 4:34Energy Transfer's Price River terminal still awaits Utah air permits,
- 4:38targeted late in the fourth quarter.
- 4:40Wildcat's Helper terminal keeps expanding toward a hundred thousand.
- 4:44The Uinta Basin Railway has zero track laid, still tied up in the S T B remand,
- 4:48Forest Service review and bond financing.
- 4:51Operators are steady.
- 4:53Bakken.
- 4:54North Dakota holds at one point one five three million barrels per day,
- 4:58thirty three rigs, ninety six percent gas capture, flaring near a hundred and thirty
- 5:03million cubic feet per day, per the latest Director's Cut.
- 5:06Dakota Access is full at seven hundred fifty thousand, walk up tariff nine seventy
- 5:11five against committed rates of five sixteen to seven fifty six.
- 5:15Double H's conversion to N G L service is pulling sixty five to eighty eight
- 5:19thousand barrels per day of southbound egress, which pushes barrels onto Dakota
- 5:23Access, Enbridge and Bridger.
- 5:26Rail to the Pacific Northwest and East Coast runs ten to fifteen dollars all in,
- 5:30and even with Brent near a hundred and eleven, lease costs,
- 5:33diesel surcharges and discharge fees keep spot rail closed.
- 5:37Chevron is going from three Williston rigs to two by December for three mile
- 5:41laterals.
- 5:42Hess Midstream sees twenty twenty seven volumes down five percent before flattening.
- 5:47Powder River.
- 5:48Steady drilling from Anschutz, Continental, Devon, EOG and Peak.
- 5:54Gathering has room.
- 5:55The bottleneck is downstream, getting into Gern zee.
- 5:59Plains continues integrating Silver Creek.
- 6:02Now Gern zee, which is where the day gets decided.
- 6:05Guernsey Sweet is unchanged at eighty five cents over Cushing,
- 6:10about a hundred dollars and eighty cents outright.
- 6:13Clearbrook sits a dollar fifty to two ten under Gern zee, sixty five cents to a
- 6:18dollar twenty five under Cushing.
- 6:20Static overnight.
- 6:22These are desk indications, not exchange prints.
- 6:25Static does not mean healthy.
- 6:27Pony Express is moving about two hundred thirty thousand barrels per day against
- 6:32four hundred thirty thousand nameplate, because of heavy apportionment.
- 6:36The Tallgrass Bridger open season offered volume tariff incentives,
- 6:40but no physical expansion.
- 6:42Platte, one forty five thousand capacity, is severely prorated toward Wood River and
- 6:47Patoka.
- 6:48Saddlehorn and Grand Mesa are full with D J barrels headed to Cushing.
- 6:53Here is the squeeze.
- 6:55Gern zee takes two hundred eighty thousand barrels per day of Canadian heavy off
- 6:59Express, plus over three hundred thousand of Bakken crude south on Bridger and Belle
- 7:04Fourche.
- 7:05Southbound space is locked by proration, and Midwest refinery maintenance limits
- 7:11what PADD two can absorb.
- 7:13So uncommitted barrels can't reach the Gulf Coast premium, and the overflow goes
- 7:17north into Clearbrook at that discount.
- 7:20The Gulf price is real.
- 7:22The pipe is the problem.
- 7:24For your call.
- 7:25Brent over a hundred and ten with W T I back under a hundred will tempt producers to
- 7:30test spot receipts or ask for transloading.
- 7:34Say no to spot rail barrels without a committed refinery off take,
- 7:38because the netbacks are underwater.
- 7:40With Express full into Casper, watch gravity and sulfur at the manifold so heavy
- 7:45batches don't touch light sweet storage.
- 7:48And audit nominations and bill deficiencies on unfulfilled commitments,
- 7:51since proration is squeezing everyone uncommitted.
- 7:54That's the brief.
