- 0:45Welcome to another episode of Athletics Elsie.
- 0:49Obviously, we have a guest this week to her and save the best
- 0:52for last, but in say hi to everybody else.
- 0:55So lucious, how are you tonight, sir?
- 0:58I'm well, I'm well, excellent, excellent.
- 1:02That was a great Halloween rendition of you and Coach
- 1:05Peterson. Mmm, really?
- 1:07We And for life with that one, seriously, that was pretty funny
- 1:11but they when they came walking out of the door of my jaws like
- 1:17that was awesome for me was the the brisk walk around the turn?
- 1:23Oh yes, I love it. Clyde, how are you tonight, sir?
- 1:35This Winger is here. It is November.
- 1:38And that was very well played by the gator women.
- 1:41So my week is going very well. Oh man, you guys just want to
- 1:49put all these words into your title.
- 1:51So I have to read them on the day that I don't wear my glasses
- 1:56Polly, the Winger was my 2022. Spirit animal Governor, how are
- 2:02you tonight, sir? I'm well, and this, this is,
- 2:07this is a special special night. You know, it's there were few
- 2:12times this year where I watched track and field and actually
- 2:17shed a tear, and this Winger is responsible for this.
- 2:22So, yes, I'm very excited to be on and I'm honored to be on the
- 2:28show. I love it, I love it.
- 2:31And this is not the first time we're hearing this, he has said
- 2:33that he you are his spirit animal.
- 2:35Whew. Okay, so it's like, truly a
- 2:38thing. Not just a nice thing.
- 2:42Yarn over again, felt lesbian Greer.
- 2:47And I'm just going to punch you after that, but our future,
- 2:52tonight's very, very well. I've been trying to, you know,
- 2:59just slug through the rest of the day to hurry up to get to
- 3:02this part. Because I listen, I was like
- 3:07giddy as a schoolgirl when I sent her the text message to ask
- 3:10her to be on the show and she said, yes.
- 3:12Yes. So you know one of the more
- 3:16important yeses I've gotten in my life.
- 3:18Not the most, not the most, that's two weeks of marriage.
- 3:24Talk anybody else know that? Oh my god, really?
- 3:28Lord. Yeah, weirdo weird.
- 3:33Right. Last but not least, this care
- 3:37winter. It's like, I don't even like, I
- 3:39don't even want to give you a pre-emptive because at this
- 3:41point, if they don't know, Or are they just don't deserve this
- 3:43conversation? I mean, yeah, if you watch this
- 3:45show and don't know who she is, seriously, don't renew your
- 3:49subscription, you know. That's I mean, that's very
- 3:52flattering. Thank you.
- 3:52And yeah, everyone's making me feel so welcome.
- 3:57I truly cannot believe how my career ended and I'm thrilled
- 4:01that people wanna hear about it. So I really appreciate you
- 4:04having me. Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 4:07And like you're saying, first and foremost, I couldn't even, I
- 4:10can't believe I didn't see this. Relations.
- 4:13Congratulations. On the year.
- 4:14That was dumb of me. I was stupid made.
- 4:17Thank you so much fun to watch and so entertaining and to have
- 4:22it done in the fashion that you did.
- 4:24It was super just super excited, clu TCH,
- 4:42Just like walks up, we only explosion.
- 4:45Yeah, and I look back at like at USAA, is that USA Track and
- 4:49Field national championships and I did not go there necessarily
- 4:53expecting to win. Like I knew I could perform well
- 4:56I've been consistent on the season but I thought that was my
- 5:01magic moment of the summer and it just kept getting cooler and
- 5:06I am absolutely aghast. So who wants to open up with
- 5:14questions? I mean, I know everyone else
- 5:17will have better questions than me, so I'm gonna get back while
- 5:23I can but it's it's an important one.
- 5:27And she's probably the perfect person to answer this athletes
- 5:32regardless of the sport. No one gets to go out the way
- 5:36you're going out. No one gets to go out.
- 5:40Truly on top. And I would just like, you know,
- 5:44to hear from someone who has done, it literally better than
- 5:48anyone else. That's the best exit ever.
- 5:50Yeah. Like what does that feel like?
- 5:53And like, just just talk about it because it's amazing.
- 5:58Thank you. And I don't know what to say
- 6:01yet. Like I told my husband rest.
- 6:03I was like, I, I like to write. I like to free.
- 6:06Write, I just like, will set a timer and like put words on
- 6:09paper and I'm so used to Jibing, disappointment and frustration,
- 6:14and heartbreak that I tried to do that after the season.
- 6:17And I still don't have words like I'm just and he looked at
- 6:21me and he said, isn't that fulfillment?
- 6:23Like, isn't that satisfaction? And it's just like this, so
- 6:27deep, like I get to be now who I thought I always could be, but I
- 6:31spent so many years finding value in the journey anyway that
- 6:35it's just this baffling like I'm the same like I'm still the same
- 6:40person I just like having Is tangible evidence of so many
- 6:43years of hard work and I'm still trying to figure out ways to
- 6:47talk about that that are relatable to other people.
- 6:50Like I just, I am in disbelief 100% but what I'm so.
- 6:56So, so proud of is this wasn't just this year.
- 7:00This decision this was as soon as Eugene World Championships
- 7:03were announced, I am from the Pacific Northwest.
- 7:06I grew up in Vancouver Washington.
- 7:09My parents literally Park their motor home at the same RV park
- 7:12like, Every time we have a meet there, and that's exactly where
- 7:15they stayed. Like it was just so comfortable
- 7:17home, soil, like the ideal, ending to my career, to be in a
- 7:22place that like, everything that could have happened to me in the
- 7:25sport happened to me like, I tore my ACL there.
- 7:28The first time I made all four Olympic teams there, I didn't
- 7:32perform well at Olympic trials. They're like I just I had every
- 7:36experience that I can imagine. So going back there and having
- 7:40it be my absolute last. Unity to do something that I had
- 7:43always wanted to do the feeling of Peace.
- 7:46Like right before my last throw was just it was so cool.
- 7:51Like I knew I've never felt like that before that I knew I was
- 7:55going to do it in that moment. And the power in deciding that
- 7:59long before this season, I think was really the, The X Factor
- 8:04like it had been literally four plus years.
- 8:07That I knew that this would be my final word to World
- 8:09Championships and so just like, you know, I'm a I'm a slow
- 8:13adopter, I guess, but having all of that type of cookies to it
- 8:16and understand that, that would be my absolute final
- 8:19opportunity. Just made it all up.
- 8:23Magical. Yeah.
- 8:25And I agree sticking to my guns like I said that USA's I thought
- 8:29was my magic moment then I thought world's was my magic
- 8:31moment on the season and I just it kept getting better so
- 8:35there's absolutely no reason for me to return.
- 8:38Like I know what it's like to fail.
- 8:40I know what it's like to be disappointed.
- 8:42And now I have this other feeling and I'd like to stick
- 8:45with them. Wow, that is like New York Times
- 8:53bestseller novel type stuff. And I don't think I mean, you're
- 8:59probably still processing everything right now but to be
- 9:04able to tell the audience, what it, what it's like to prepare
- 9:10for the end. If there's anything, the track
- 9:13and field athletes have a Um, with major, major, major
- 9:19problems with, especially those that have been in the sport for
- 9:23a long time. It is, it is, what is the end
- 9:28going to look like? And how do you paint that
- 9:32picture or do you even bother painting that picture?
- 9:35You know, I envisioned for myself.
- 9:38I envisioned myself going until I couldn't go anymore.
- 9:43And that's literally what happened.
- 9:45I, you know, it went from knee surgery to hip surgery to
- 9:49pulling my hamstring completely off the bone on the other side,
- 9:53okay? It's it, you know, and and you
- 10:03know, it I still had to go through the withdrawals and
- 10:06everything that came along with that.
- 10:08But I remember saying to myself, I'm going to ride This until the
- 10:13wheels fall off, I'm gonna go till I can't go and I have no
- 10:18regrets about that. Now, I'd said it to you earlier
- 10:23in the show. Like, you know, I remember you,
- 10:27you know, meeting you in Austin when I was coaching at
- 10:30University of Texas and, you know, I'd like to hear a little
- 10:34bit about that Journey for you and where and why, you know, it
- 10:39seems like if you look at your, you know, your top 10 marks,
- 10:42It's Austin seems to be a very special place for you.
- 10:46Can you tell me a little bit about where, how Austin came
- 10:49into the mix and why you thrown so far there?
- 10:53Yeah, I with Tae SE van, he was my coach from graduation from
- 10:59Purdue like that first professional year until the 2017
- 11:03season. So, you know, we worked together
- 11:07for three years in Chula Vista and then he was at un0 for a
- 11:10second and then went to Texas. So I live in Colorado Springs,
- 11:15it was only 13 hours drive and the springs is pretty cold like
- 11:20in the winter. So any chance I got?
- 11:22I would go to Austin to train with him and those times were
- 11:26just like, just that little extra something different like
- 11:30different routine, I would often bring my dog, we would go you
- 11:34know to to the lake Lady Bird Lake and swim and she loved it
- 11:38every single day. And just like this, like I love
- 11:42a training camp. Camp and those were really my
- 11:43first experiences with that, that just like the only thing I
- 11:46have to do is go train and then eat well and sleep and cuddle
- 11:51with my dog. Like I'm just this my
- 11:52concentrated time to just be an athlete without family without
- 11:57work stuff that gets in the way and just be a job went over.
- 12:01So I think that's really what the magic was but my farthest
- 12:05throw in Austin was actually like one of the times.
- 12:11I said a lot like This year that I didn't really have any
- 12:14business coming back from ACL number one, right?
- 12:17Like I'd had that surgery in the fall of 2012.
- 12:21I'd you know, made two Olympic teams at that point, but not
- 12:23ever shown, like consistency outside of one season.
- 12:27Like I didn't necessarily have the experience to tell me that,
- 12:30like, it was going to be worth me returning to Sport and 2013
- 12:35was, you know, I gotta manage to get on the podium at nine months
- 12:39post, op, which was Wild 2014. I won the First ever
- 12:43competition, where two women from the US, were over 200 feet
- 12:46in the same meat and then in 2015 I was just sick of being
- 12:50like tentative. Like I had gotten back to a
- 12:52pretty good level but I just really wanted to like blow the
- 12:55doors off of it. And at the time that felt like
- 12:59such a long time from my PR, which was in 2010.
- 13:03So, it had only been five years. But at that point, I was like,
- 13:06oh my gosh, it's been an age since I've thrown a PR and to
- 13:11throw 60 64, Seven in Austin, three years post-op when I just
- 13:16I very consciously was like, I'm done being scared.
- 13:20I'm just going to put my leg out there and see what happens, you
- 13:24know, called my sport psychologist at the time
- 13:25immediately and I was just over the moon excited like this felt
- 13:30like such a breakthrough for me mentally and it was all because
- 13:34I was in this like, safe concentrated Javelin place of
- 13:38Austin at to clad Littlefield Stadium.
- 13:43I could listen to this like all day.
- 13:48There's so many chapters, right? Yeah, it's takes forever to tell
- 13:53the story. I know I'm going to be selfish
- 13:58because like I've I was blessed enough to feel a little bit of
- 14:03this moment that I'm going to ask you about internally myself.
- 14:08But I want to know. What it's like for somebody else
- 14:13to describe your very last javelin throw.
- 14:20Was the best one you've ever done, right?
- 14:23And like, When you're a little kid, you in the backyard, every
- 14:29time you shoot the last shot, it goes in right?
- 14:32Yeah. You know we all wish Michael
- 14:34Jordan have retired after he pushed Brian Russell off and a
- 14:38jump shot, well for some ungodly reason.
- 14:40He felt like he needed to go play in the play for the Wizards
- 14:43and we ought to and we, honestly all alike.
- 14:44We act like, we act like it didn't happen, right?
- 14:47Like we all act like a retired when he when he pushed off.
- 14:50Brian Russell. What he did, right?
- 14:52Yeah. It was Clyde.
- 14:54Don't start. that's another argument you're going to lose,
- 14:57but I want to know like take me and personally because I'm like
- 15:03popcorn waiting for this answer but like, take our viewership
- 15:06through you pick up the javelin for your last throw and you know
- 15:12what, you last throw It's through that.
- 15:17Like from the time you pull the thing out of that little stupid
- 15:20cart, they have to time it lands and you know it's really deep
- 15:25like what does that feel like? So my most recent American
- 15:32record was actually at the second to last meet of the
- 15:34season so that was like my second.
- 15:36Yeah. But 64 98 to win the Zurich
- 15:40Diamond League final was I think I'm now going to be tested on
- 15:46this. My fifth best throw about time.
- 15:53So like, that's pretty cool, too.
- 15:56Like, I'm pretty thrilled with that to be my last through ever
- 15:59and be in the top ten like by far, like top five.
- 16:02So I went to therapy, starting like right before.
- 16:06New Year's this year. I was like, I want to get my
- 16:09ducks in a row. I really, you know, I feel
- 16:12confident in this decision, but how can I intentionally spend
- 16:16time I'm so that I get like, A thing out of this last season
- 16:21that I've been missing like I just I feel like I leak energy
- 16:25sometimes like I'm not spending my energy on stuff that I
- 16:28necessarily want to and how can I wrap myself a wrap my mind
- 16:31around like just being that little bit extra selfish that
- 16:35maybe I've never been so that I can do the things.
- 16:37I actually want to do with the people who are closest to me,
- 16:41who have been there for 20 years and that just meant that every
- 16:45like rest kept making fun of me. He was like, stop being so
- 16:48melodramatic about all of these. Excuse the last throwing session
- 16:51that I had on American soil. I like made him sit down with me
- 16:54on the end of the runway and I was like, this is the last time
- 16:57that I will throw a javelin in the United States.
- 16:59Like let us talk about this. Like let us be here together and
- 17:03like just do this with me so that I can really like take in
- 17:06the moment. Feel my feelings.
- 17:08Like I've never been shy about doing that and I really it was
- 17:12super helpful to share that throughout this final season 2
- 17:15to just, you know, make sure that people knew that it was
- 17:18going to be the last time so it Just felt like I had practiced
- 17:21that so many times when I picked the job, one up for my final
- 17:24throw and kind of a micro example of that.
- 17:28Is that I threw the same Javelin that I had set.
- 17:33The American record in 2010, to set this American record in
- 17:372022, and it was like Photo and quote, the wrong Javelin.
- 17:41Like I had been told by the manufacturer like, no, you
- 17:44should be throwing this like stiffer like more highly rated
- 17:47Javelin to throw further, but it just never quite worked for.
- 17:50B. So in my final two beads, I was
- 17:52like I'm just another job on that.
- 17:54I love, like I'm going to trust myself so picking it up for
- 17:58final time after so many great experiences was just a
- 18:02celebration and I know that that throw could have been much
- 18:06further. Like I definitely got to be the
- 18:09last in the order, the diamond league and every other Diamond
- 18:14league is like the order is different.
- 18:15I was the last and I had already won like I could have made it
- 18:19really really. Really Amazing.
- 18:20So that's my only little bit of like wasn't ideal, but to be top
- 18:265 and know, and have celebrated, like, I couldn't stop laughing
- 18:30actually like during that throw because I was just like, how
- 18:33could this have happened? Like I get a bye into next
- 18:36year's World Championships. That I'm not going to use like
- 18:39this, it just felt like normal and just the deepest sense of
- 18:50peace. That you could feel for sure.
- 18:53You gotta keep everybody like on their toes.
- 18:56Don't send in your paperwork. Usatf like employee be like,
- 19:03hey, are you gonna file that? Just hang on to it.
- 19:15Really, I would love to not worry about the drug tester
- 19:19showing up at some everybody's comment.
- 19:22No, for real. That's that's the impetus to
- 19:25retire. It's stop having them come to
- 19:27your house. And that is the only reason that
- 19:30I like really wanted to wait because like, I know, the only
- 19:33thing I do know about retirement is that it's really hard to come
- 19:36out of it drug testing wise so I took like a month and I was
- 19:39like, okay I'm sure of the distance this decision.
- 19:42I just still have to actually sign the dotted line.
- 19:46That's awesome Solutions. Yeah, I'll be honest, I don't
- 19:50have a question. You guys got to cover the gamut
- 19:54with, not just the questions about the conversation.
- 19:56I just want to say like, wow, you know, it was just phenomenal
- 20:00to watch and for me, it's like the joy of it.
- 20:04Like you talk about how you can stop laughing through your last
- 20:07throw. No, that was you throughout the
- 20:08year, you know, to my watched you grown.
- 20:10You just seem to be thoroughly in the moment and enjoying every
- 20:14step of the journey. So I just want to say
- 20:15congratulations and well done. And thank you for allowing us to
- 20:19share and all that. It was, it was pretty amazing to
- 20:21watch. Thank you.
- 20:24I think like, like talking about the wheels coming off, right?
- 20:29I the wheels did come off, like I tore my ACL a second time in
- 20:33August of 2020. And I truly didn't think that I
- 20:39would get back to a level that I was used to when that Opened for
- 20:45sure like 20 21, and it's in and of itself, blew me away.
- 20:49But to get to decide was the really emotional like acceptance
- 20:55part of it. Like I just, I didn't know that
- 20:57I could make it through that second, really, really difficult
- 21:00process and the timing of it was awful, but to get to choose to
- 21:06retire, still in the timeline that I wanted to originally
- 21:13before that. Injury is where that Joy came
- 21:17from like it just was such a pleasure to jog down the runway
- 21:22without an hour of rehab before hands like I just I was so
- 21:27grateful for my healthy body in a way that I would not have been
- 21:30without that second surgery regardless of how difficult it
- 21:33was and how much it derailed like what I thought was going to
- 21:36be my ideal Olympics that. I just I couldn't help but love
- 21:41what I was doing because I actually got to do it again and
- 21:43that felt like the biggest Gift. But so I know Chu has a business
- 21:48related question that is very, very important.
- 21:50But I want to ask this because it was something that struck me
- 21:54this year, you know, your season and, you know, with their home
- 22:01national champs home, World Championships and all that
- 22:04because you are such a star in your story was so intriguing.
- 22:09The camera was on women's Javelin a lot more than we is
- 22:12normally, right? And that's a great thing.
- 22:15But one thing that I subconsciously was aware of, but
- 22:19was kind of shocked into bye-bye, watching you so much,
- 22:23is no one really understands the level of violence that that
- 22:29event demands on the body and you've suffered major, major
- 22:35injuries because of it because of it.
- 22:37I just think that's really, really interesting at Worlds.
- 22:39They were shots of you from the front and it's like, oh my God
- 22:44like what is this? So please explain that because
- 22:48none of us can the intentional car crash.
- 22:51Oh, it's awesome. Yeah, Sean Furey I think he was
- 22:55like four-time National Champion.
- 22:57He calls it a combination. Belly-flopping car crash.
- 23:01Hmm. Because you have to like relax
- 23:03into it and like let it happen but you know that it's coming.
- 23:07Like you can see the impact that's on its way.
- 23:11Well, in this is like also about the wheels coming off, like part
- 23:14of the reason I'm going to stick to your retirement, is that?
- 23:16I watched those throws from the front and I could still see my
- 23:19knee trying to go inward, right? Like even in the brace, like, I
- 23:23know. Now like I this most recent PT
- 23:27Kelsey Whitman of the u.s. OPC, she said, carry your knee
- 23:29can handle two ACL surgeries. You do not want a third like for
- 23:33life, like arthritis development, for all that stuff.
- 23:37And so to see that violent action still happening to this
- 23:42leg, that's only two years post-op.
- 23:45Like I'm good like that but you're right, like, there's
- 23:52there's so much more rotational Force than people understand
- 23:55about the javelin to like, you're developing forces in so
- 23:59many different planes. It's the event.
- 24:01That is a run, a jump, and a throw.
- 24:06And you. I think I tore my ACL the first
- 24:13time because I thought it was just a single leg block.
- 24:16I understood how to use both legs in that block.
- 24:20I've described it to Tiana Madison.
- 24:23As like, her block, like, is absorbing the same forces, but I
- 24:28have to stay on the ground. I don't get to get out of that
- 24:31pressure, and I have to move through it, and then Propel and
- 24:35Implement as far as they can. So, yeah, if you watch long, a
- 24:40triple jump takeoffs, You imagine just staying on the
- 24:43ground. I'm obviously not as fast as
- 24:45them. So the forces are going to be
- 24:47like, not quite as bad. There's just a lot more torque
- 24:50that happens when your spikes stick and you then have to move
- 24:54body parts around joints. Yeah, acceleration is everything
- 25:01so moving as fast as possible like at the last moment that
- 25:05your feet touch, the ground is when those forces can generate
- 25:09really big injuries. And then you have to be patient
- 25:12in that motion to let your arm be remember, coach path to
- 25:17striving, describing it, like driving a car into a wall with
- 25:22no seat belt. And your arm is your body going
- 25:27through the windshield. And I'm like, alright, I will
- 25:33not up for it, try the javelin and Oh my gosh, like there is
- 25:42some like rotating around the bar, but it's when you're off
- 25:45the ground. So like that ground contact is
- 25:47when all of the danger happens like if you catch a ski on the
- 25:49slopes, right? Like you're like gets pulled
- 25:52that way because you're still touching the ground Vault, you
- 25:55know, they're the propelled object and all the rotation
- 25:58happens when their feet aren't on the ground, obviously,
- 26:01injury, still happen, but Ariana and fellow Tokyo Olympian and
- 26:07second place at Nationals this year.
- 26:09We were the second first and second Javelin throwers at 36
- 26:14and 33 and I believe that the oldest woman's one and two in
- 26:18the history of individual events at National Championships.
- 26:22But she used it pole vaulter, like she was actually a D1
- 26:26vaulter, a track and then started throwing job when after
- 26:35college. But she says that she wanted to
- 26:37stop howling other stuff, she wanted to be the catapult
- 26:41Rather, the wise choice, it's definitely a train wreck.
- 26:49It's when you do, it's more when you do it wrong, that's a train
- 26:57wreck when you do it, right? It's easier, but it takes a lot
- 27:03of practice doing it wrong to do it, right?
- 27:05So that's when disaster strikes as with anything you need.
- 27:11Yeah. So the business question, that
- 27:15Collide referred to. I'm going to read it verbatim
- 27:17because I'm not even I'll mess it up.
- 27:19If I add a little bit what do you have at?
- 27:22What advice do you have for athletes?
- 27:24Who are carving out a career? As a female thrower knowing that
- 27:30Financial backing opportunities are slim at best.
- 27:38I like to say that you can put all of your eggs in all of your
- 27:43baskets. I know, I know that I was lucky
- 27:47at the time that I graduated from college.
- 27:50The fact that, you know, I think the ni L guidelines are a really
- 27:55interesting and exciting move for a lot of people but it just
- 27:59introduces like a whole other job that you have to do as a
- 28:02student. And I worry about that in terms
- 28:06of like athletic development, Like how do you split your focus
- 28:09that many ways and still you know, like I just said put all
- 28:12your eggs and all your baskets but anyway I graduated at a time
- 28:16when I could get a sponsorship that had an actual salary base,
- 28:22it was only twelve thousand dollars at the time but the
- 28:26bonus structure was such that it became a very livable situation
- 28:30because I succeeded early but talking to my fellow throwers
- 28:35right now. I know that that's absolutely
- 28:37not true. Um, anymore.
- 28:39And the wild thing about this season is that I have
- 28:44relationships to the tracks Smith and the New York Athletic
- 28:47Club. But I got to have my friend,
- 28:50Katie Chef, still customize, my shoes and cover up the Nike logo
- 28:56of the shoes that I purchased, because I'm not paid to wear any
- 29:00shoes logos and other people can't do that because they
- 29:04either have a good contract or they I've just been given gear
- 29:09and been told that that's the only thing that they can wear.
- 29:12So I just I, as I navigated this season, and as amazing things
- 29:17kept happening in my head I was like, catching catching catching
- 29:21the dollar signs. That would have been mine with a
- 29:24contract, are pretty unbelievable.
- 29:27Like, if I apply my performances to what I had before I turned
- 29:3230, it was a lot of money that I get zero of the Dollars and that
- 29:39like love of sport that truly doing it for me, like I want
- 29:44more for women athletes. I want them to be paid that more
- 29:46than a hundred thousand dollars, but it is still, so valuable to
- 29:51navigate it with the people that I got to navigate it with.
- 29:54And I was able to fund my job will inhabit, eventually by
- 29:58getting a full-time job. That was flexible enough to work
- 30:01with me as still an athlete. So I think finding a way to Kick
- 30:08around is truly what my advice is because I pr that 36 after 12
- 30:15years. Like I don't I I'm amazed but re
- 30:20also at 33 getting s at 33 at Nationals but also like making
- 30:25her first Olympic team at the age of 32.
- 30:29Then at the end of this season she started competing in like in
- 30:34April through in Zagreb on like Bird 10 and through World
- 30:42Championship standing for next year had a m PR and now has like
- 30:47done herself this favor to like take the pressure off for next
- 30:51season and concentrate on things that can make her throw even
- 30:53further. So that wouldn't be possible.
- 30:55Unless like, she had been making her dreams happen along the way.
- 30:58And I just think that the glamour doesn't have to be in
- 31:01the money. I want it to be, and I want
- 31:03people to get back there, but I just love seeing women.
- 31:07And succeed for the joy of it. Like, sir lucious is saying
- 31:13like, it's fun to do something that you're good at and do it to
- 31:17your absolute best ability and how, like, however, you make
- 31:20that happen, is what you should do.
- 31:24Well, we can be be pursuing multiple dreams at once, and
- 31:28I've always tried to do that. So one of the more unpopular
- 31:32things that I tell a lot of young athletes that ask me for
- 31:35advice, and that sort of thing, is that Unless track and field
- 31:41changes the current structure. The money you're going to make
- 31:46is going to be vastly more once you're done with the sport.
- 31:52Now what does the sport do? Well, the sport prepares you for
- 31:55that and I don't care what field you're in.
- 31:59Okay? When you've gone through a Cara
- 32:01Wingers been through, I don't care what you throw?
- 32:04A car Winger this point. Okay?
- 32:07I just had a thought like Like if Kara Winger wanted to just do
- 32:13speaking tours for the rest of her life.
- 32:16She could do that, right. She has a story to tell and it's
- 32:21a story that no one else can tell right.
- 32:24That's, that's valuable that's value.
- 32:28You know. So sorry I've got something in
- 32:33my throat but obviously what you just said is very Be very
- 32:39important because far too many athletes get to the point where
- 32:45in their minds, it's not making dollars and cents and that's the
- 32:50only driving thing that's keeping them going and they're
- 32:54not looking for those other alternative revenue streams that
- 32:59can keep them going, right? And that's that's the part about
- 33:04track and feeling. And it's a shame that it's we're
- 33:06still in this situation. But for those, you know, for
- 33:11those that just do it for the love and are waiting for that
- 33:16moment where they have that breakthrough when they can
- 33:20actually achieve those big things.
- 33:22Yeah, I mean, you're literally sacrificing your entire life,
- 33:28you know, for a moment or two or five like you, he's like, oh
- 33:35yeah, I really appreciate, you know.
- 33:39Know that that message and it's, you know, for a lot of young
- 33:42athletes that is a very hard pill to swallow.
- 33:47Because what do they see? They see what's happening in the
- 33:51bright lights right there seeing the Pomp and Circumstance and
- 33:55they're not really understanding what it is.
- 33:59You put your body through what you put your mind through year
- 34:02after year, week after week, day after day.
- 34:06So it's yeah, it's a labor of love.
- 34:10That's what it is. I think that it is absolutely
- 34:14sacrificed but you can frame that as negative or positive in
- 34:19my opinion, like I have loved being part of the world of track
- 34:23and field you know like it expanded my worldview and stages
- 34:27like throughout high school college and then being in
- 34:31foreign countries like with people from my country, they
- 34:35didn't look like me. Like I just I came from rural
- 34:38Washington. Date.
- 34:39Like I was just exposed to so many amazing people from so many
- 34:42different backgrounds, a little bit more at a time until I was
- 34:45like this world is amazing and I want to be part of it and I said
- 34:49I didn't have any business coming back from ACL number one.
- 34:52But I think the reason that I did is that I loved the
- 34:55lifestyle and being surrounded by amazing people like to just
- 35:00be a part of it is what I wanted and I always knew whether it was
- 35:04conscious or not that if I could throw 60 meters, you know and
- 35:08then T2 as the world got better, I could go to these competitions
- 35:12and be in the mix and just like see how amazing people from
- 35:16every corner of the globe were at this very specific thing that
- 35:20we do. And there's you know there's not
- 35:24a whole lot of Glory in the javelin and when you really get
- 35:27down to but in any event in track and field or in any sport
- 35:31like it is fleeting, but what are you actually there for, to
- 35:35be your best and to spend time with these other people that are
- 35:38the only the ones in the world that understand what you're
- 35:40going through. So that's really what it's been
- 35:44about for me. Like you you're sacrificing but
- 35:48that you love like of course you're going to do that because
- 35:51this is this is your life like it's fun to try hard and for me
- 35:54it's always been really fun to pay attention to the details and
- 35:57know that I'm prepared for those moments when they come my
- 36:06favorite part. With with Alan Johnson in year
- 36:11one. About a lot of today's athletes
- 36:14are competing. They are there in the sport for
- 36:17contracts and not for careers. And and my favorite part about
- 36:22this whole story is like, Cara Wingers.
- 36:25Life is what a career looks like.
- 36:27It's for olympiads. Two major injuries to Major
- 36:30comebacks and a PB at 36. Right.
- 36:34That's what a career looks like. Well, why is all of that?
- 36:37Like why do you have to have all those pieces?
- 36:39Because that's how you get remembered.
- 36:41Yeah, right. Like I'm not trying to be funny
- 36:44but if she had thrown what she threw at 36 at 27, right?
- 36:50Went through one Olympics and they didn't go good and then she
- 36:53retired decide to go on with life, right?
- 36:56She still be the American record holder.
- 36:59We wouldn't remember her, right? And that's the only serious.
- 37:04Like, that's the that's the part that so many people in this
- 37:07generation. Don't get, is that people
- 37:09remember those with careers? Yeah.
- 37:13Right money is awesome, but nobody's going to count your
- 37:17money for you. You know what I mean?
- 37:18They're not going to be like, man.
- 37:19I care when your weights so much money as a javelin thrower, like
- 37:22if you did, you know what I'm saying?
- 37:23Like, nobody's remember that, right?
- 37:25Nobody's gonna remember that and all that stuff is so in the
- 37:28shadows anyway. Dale, I can track and field that
- 37:30you you don't get to know that like you can speculate about
- 37:33what people's contracts are, but it's not public information.
- 37:38I cannot believe that I got to retire in the same year as
- 37:42Allyson Felix and Michelle Corner.
- 37:46Yeah, yeah, and I grew up with them.
- 37:50So my like a story. I heard they ever tell people
- 37:54like publicly but in person also, adhere Allison.
- 37:59Mates at Beijing. Team processing in San Jose like
- 38:04for one night. And I was in the room and I'd
- 38:08seen her run for a couple years when I was still at Junior
- 38:11Nationals. So I obviously knew who I was.
- 38:14And Felix was it's her second, but I'm in the room and she
- 38:19walked in and I was like, am I in the wrong room?
- 38:38It just over so many years. Like someone who is that
- 38:43decorated to you know we just had so many moments of like on
- 38:49massage tables next to each other on teams like talking
- 38:52about dogs and by the elevator at when she ran that ridiculous
- 38:56split on the 4x4 at Beijing World Championships.
- 38:59Like I could just see how fired shot fired up.
- 39:01She was like, for herself about that split and her role on the
- 39:06team, like on the relay rather than her individual event.
- 39:09Like I just I've always been such a huge fan but it's
- 39:12Alison's. Those like, are we friends?
- 39:13I don't know. And to watch her mettle in
- 39:21Tokyo, even for her to make that that team like her race at
- 39:27trials and the 400 like that. Duration at the end was so
- 39:31ridiculous. I'm just such a fan and she's
- 39:36clearly supported me this whole time to like she commented on my
- 39:39Instagram after trials last year.
- 39:41And she was like, it's been so wonderful to watch your
- 39:43recovery. Like I just there's no stories
- 39:47like that if you don't stick around, like, if you don't get
- 39:50to share all these moments with women who again are going
- 39:54through the exact same stuff. It's just in a little bit of a
- 39:57parallel universe. Man I'm so so proud to have been
- 40:02their teammates for so long. Michelle was on my neck.
- 40:07Ack. Under-23 team in 2006 in the
- 40:11Dominican Republic where I met my husband.
- 40:15Oh wow. And she was one of the ones that
- 40:19made fun of us. The most, for all of the time we
- 40:21were spending together. Hmm.
- 40:25Oh, that's funny. That's all Awesome.
- 40:29Let's it's such a great story to hear just the endurance of it.
- 40:33That's what I think kids resonated with me is just the
- 40:36endurance of it and making it so that for lack of better ways to
- 40:41say you don't have too many leaks and you end up in your
- 40:43destination. Yeah.
- 40:45Right. You don't get any detours or
- 40:47unnecessary AAA stops like you made it to your destination
- 40:50where you should be when you should have gotten there.
- 40:52So that's super kudos for you and that's amazing.
- 40:56And I hope that everybody really truly understands what that In
- 40:59the end because it means a lot. Yeah.
- 41:02When I, there's so many more people to like, I don't think
- 41:08you get a career, if you don't notice the people that are on
- 41:10your team and by your side. And for me, that's been
- 41:13sportsmed at every turn. I don't I don't talk about my
- 41:17left shoulder surgery, very much, but that one, you know,
- 41:20that's the year that I threw that 66 47 in Austin.
- 41:23Like I thought that I was going to set the world on fire and I
- 41:28had a really good. USA's.
- 41:29And then I had this super unfortunate like non-dominant
- 41:34side injury, and it wasn't my fault.
- 41:39It was a chiropractic adjustment gone wrong that I didn't want.
- 41:43And I never talked about like the actual mechanism of injury,
- 41:47but I'm far enough removed from it.
- 41:48Now that it was just like me being in a position that I
- 41:51wasn't comfortable with resisting, it freak accident,
- 41:55but devastating, for what? That was going to be my comeback
- 42:00season and it was in some ways, but it could have been really
- 42:04amazing and between both knees and that like, very unfair
- 42:09poorly timed injury, those medical professionals that like
- 42:13taught me more about my body than I ever knew or wanted to
- 42:15know necessarily religious the the true like superheroes of my
- 42:20career and to take them a bib like from the major championship
- 42:24or rest and I took we both metal that pan.
- 42:28As in 2015, and we took our little Podium stuffed animals to
- 42:32my PT at the time because she had twin girls, and I gave them
- 42:35to her and, like, share the journey.
- 42:39There's no reason to navigate it, if you don't.
- 42:41So, that's what kept me around for so long.
- 42:45The people fear and chiropractors that have ever
- 42:51worked on Javelin throwers or decathlete who boy or have
- 42:54Catholics. But for Ashley, Yeah.
- 42:58But period. Yeah, they get their money's
- 43:08worth, you know, this isn't necessarily true because it's
- 43:12when I tore my ACL the second time.
- 43:14But in 2020, when I didn't have access to Sports Med, I kind of
- 43:19felt my best. And then I went in like torment,
- 43:22like minutes, whatever. But like, re lived at my house
- 43:27iCarly The press and I for four months, like we trained together
- 43:30that summer because she was like really isolated in California
- 43:33and we would do like tiny little, like shoulder rehab
- 43:38things on each other, but not having treatment for a long
- 43:41time. I really feel like whether it
- 43:43was the very unilateral, like imbalanced Javelin equilibrium
- 43:49that I found, or I actually like did some sort of maturing and
- 43:53building an old lady strength. I don't know, but I haven't
- 43:56needed it. Let's prep for retirement, maybe
- 44:0513 years. Also, he was absolutely
- 44:08essential to my career and he told me recently said, my
- 44:12favorite powerlifting quote is don't come off, strength
- 44:16Mountain too fast there as a super imbalanced thrower.
- 44:21Like if I just stop like my whole body will disintegrate.
- 44:24Probably so I've tried to keep keep the retirement Fitness up
- 44:29first. Oh goodness, well, we appreciate
- 44:34your time, we appreciate your story, we appreciate you most of
- 44:38all. But you know, it's great to be
- 44:41able to share your story. It's great to be able to have
- 44:43you tell it yourself and we hope that everyone that sees here in
- 44:47watches this is able to appreciate it.
- 44:51Well, thank you. I'll never get tired of telling
- 44:55it. I don't think it does.
- 45:02But as a woman to like it's been really nice to say, I'm super
- 45:06proud of myself. I'm super proud of my team for
- 45:08sure, but I'm very proud of sticking around this long like
- 45:13we've talked about, but just yeah believing for this long and
- 45:17having it actually come to fruition, he's really fun.
- 45:21Absolutely. Well, you go enjoy the rest of
- 45:25your evening, whatever, that might be for you.
- 45:28And hopefully we see you sooner than later.
- 45:33Well, thank you for having me. It's bless ya.
- 45:36Thank you. Be careful.
- 45:38Have a good night. Have a good night.
- 45:41Bye. Everybody can take it and
- 45:50exhale. Now the fan girl moments done
- 45:53for you guys. I'm just kidding.
- 45:58Well now that was great. That was a great story to share.
- 46:01So love it. So very interesting happened.
- 46:11I don't even know what I mean. So I feel like your printer
- 46:17prompt a conversation by putting it on.
- 46:19Are you fishing for something? No, no I'm prepared for our next
- 46:23phase. Oh okay.
- 46:30All right. So a question that we had
- 46:33discussed midweek and I'm going to put it in the air to be
- 46:37discussed again or in thorough languages with everybody paying
- 46:42attention to it. It's rumored that the NCAA will
- 46:46change our scholarship status for track and field to a
- 46:50headcount sport versus equivalency.
- 46:54Do we and I'm going to limit it to the tiles because it is our
- 46:58opinions so everybody else can argue against everything else.
- 47:01But do we as our tiles entity here really want this to happen.
- 47:09Bring we should start with the King now in their first, or last
- 47:15first. First world problems one.
- 47:17Yes, the first world problems. I'm going to go last.
- 47:21Okay, I'll jump in. When you when you, when we first
- 47:29heard, you know the whatever you want to call it competition
- 47:34committee, change committee, whatever they're calling
- 47:36themselves these days. When you first heard the rumors
- 47:38of this, it was like dope. Give us more.
- 47:43Give us more, right? I don't like seeing you like I'm
- 47:47not going to turn down more scholarship money.
- 47:50I'll take that all day. You want to give me 30
- 47:52scholarships? I'll take it.
- 47:55But I don't know. I don't really I'm not really
- 47:58feeling the everybody gets the same money thing.
- 48:02I'm just not our sport is extremely unique and I can I
- 48:09don't like the feeling of everyone on my team right now
- 48:16it's on scholarship. Would be on a full scholarship.
- 48:21I like the fact that our sport gets too Play with, if you will
- 48:27change award based on the context of the performances,
- 48:33give it, we're not a team sport at our core and I don't think
- 48:41that you know an NCAA All-American and a conference
- 48:46score. Should be on the same
- 48:47scholarship. Let alone someone today who
- 48:50would be getting you know books in a few thousand dollars He's
- 48:55for sure, doesn't belong on the same scholarship as an NCAA
- 48:58score. So if you could find, if there's
- 49:02a way to give me more scholarship money and still not,
- 49:05have it be headcount. I think I would much rather land
- 49:09in that zone, then just move it to headcount and I, and I'm open
- 49:15to being talked off, that ledge with, that's where I'm at with
- 49:18it. It doesn't, it doesn't feel
- 49:20doesn't feel proper to me. Well, as far as the idea of a
- 49:28headcount Sport and track for coming ahead counts for that.
- 49:33Just leaves me to believe that. The point of all of this.
- 49:38And I know that there are certain individuals in our sport
- 49:41that have talked with us up for decades and have pushed for
- 49:46this. And the idea that NCAA is should
- 49:51be purely about the best teams showing up at the ncaa's to
- 49:58compete against each other, right?
- 50:01And what, what does that look like, well, As Clyde.
- 50:06So eloquently put it. That means that the kid that
- 50:11should be on books 2000 dollars, whatever, right?
- 50:16They're going to have every opportunity together ring right
- 50:21at the national championships. By the sheer fact that they're
- 50:25on this team, that goes to the NCAA championships.
- 50:30Now obviously, you know, team, It's whatever you can throw
- 50:37everything at the wall. When you when you break, when
- 50:39you make a move like this. Or when you think about changing
- 50:44the landscape, my question is can Everyone that's not in the
- 50:54power of five of Ford 30. Scholarships can, can they
- 50:59afford to scholarship? You know, whether it's, you
- 51:03know, this is say they double the Min.
- 51:05So 24 on the men. 36 on the woman, right?
- 51:10How many schools can actually fund that?
- 51:14How many schools can actually pay for that?
- 51:17And that's the part that I think ultimately would lead. ^ 5 doing
- 51:25their own thing and everyone else doing something else like
- 51:30from a purely track and field perspective.
- 51:33So I don't know that it pertains to a UTSA.
- 51:40I don't know that the UTSA would see value in that, you know,
- 51:45it's one thing for the NCAA to mandate that you have to give
- 51:50these scholarships as opposed to.
- 51:54Well this this is this is a new era and if you can do it, do it.
- 51:58And if you can't then you can write.
- 52:01But I think what it what it will lead to is that a lot of the
- 52:05schools that don't have the budget that don't have.
- 52:08They're not going to go to Nationals.
- 52:10That's not they're not going to be able to go at all period.
- 52:14So I think that's a it's a huge change and it Huge thing.
- 52:19That's, you know, if it does come down the pipe, I think that
- 52:24would lead to a true separation in the ncaa's we know.
- 52:35Yeah. I've thought about this a bunch
- 52:41and I think what I have to say, like, literally just runs right
- 52:46off the back of what the two of you just said, and goes a little
- 52:50bit further. Like, right now that the average
- 52:54track team spends, 50 scholarships both genders on 100
- 52:59student athletes, right? 18 12.6, you know, I mean, it's
- 53:06so sorry about 15 Seasons, which offering for T?
- 53:09We have 30 scholarships re on a hundred kids, right?
- 53:17It's roughly 50 and 50 1812 voicings.
- 53:20So if you double them, you're 36 and 25, right?
- 53:23But if they're all fools, I'm going to tell you that you're
- 53:26going to have a smaller track team, right?
- 53:29So you're going to have, let's just be clear.
- 53:32There will be fewer people running division, one track and
- 53:35field. That's a fact.
- 53:38Right? And because now you're creating
- 53:42a larger pool of complete Walk-Ons?
- 53:46Yeah, right. Like, you can't help them and
- 53:48all right, I got 36. If your number 37, your you like
- 53:54the 4th string, back up Long Snapper, like UK in the whole
- 53:57bill, right? That's what it is, right.
- 54:02And, and so there's that, right? But beyond that, and this is the
- 54:06part that I Just think is and I hopefully this is my first world
- 54:11hand off when I'm done to. So Lucius if you give the power
- 54:18five schools, 36 and 25, Wow. What's left for non power 5 for
- 54:31a group of five school. Right, let's just do that.
- 54:34Like what's left? Because what's left does not
- 54:41score at the national championship.
- 54:45If you advance the say we Advanced you might go and for
- 54:49sure someone's going to score. So I'm not literally saying no
- 54:53one but man Look. It will be like the like the
- 55:03NCAA championship in football, right?
- 55:06There's there's only eight schools that are actually buying
- 55:11for national championship. Right?
- 55:15Okay, so if we give sir Lucius and others like him, 36 women,
- 55:22scholarships and 25 men. Scholarships there will be four
- 55:28teams competing for the National Championship in track and field
- 55:32of each gender. It's barely more than that now.
- 55:36And I'm going to be honest, right?
- 55:39What if you basically double the top end of all of those?
- 55:44Those rosters. Group of five has it.
- 55:49They got to have their own Championship, that's because you
- 55:51literally can't go. No.
- 55:53And, and and, you know and Look, I think from a student athlete
- 56:01experience. I can't even say whether it be
- 56:04better or worse, but it will be so vastly different if that were
- 56:09to happen. That it's not comparable to
- 56:12anything. We currently have that exists.
- 56:15Yeah. Right.
- 56:16We would literally be creep. Could be creating the FBS and
- 56:19FCS, you know, and every sport right there.
- 56:22Be an FBS version of division, one track and field and R be an
- 56:26FCS version of division, one track and field.
- 56:29And and here's the thing. I'm not sure whether that's
- 56:32better or worse, folks. I'm being completely honest, I'm
- 56:36really not sure whether that's better or worse and so I can't
- 56:42even weigh in as to whether I want it or don't and I'm not
- 56:46usually a fence sitter but I look.
- 56:48It's so different. Right.
- 56:51And it and there, it could go so many directions that I don't
- 56:55know where I wrote. I have to see all of the
- 56:58ramifications, like I'd have to see the expectations of what's
- 57:00going to happen. If we're really going to create
- 57:02an FBS level, and an FCS level in track and field, I'm probably
- 57:05here for, right? Because Olympians are Olympians
- 57:10So, if you really think about that, then there's more people
- 57:13getting scholarships if you think about it that way, right?
- 57:17And there's more people who will get high level coaching it just
- 57:21can't, they just won't be able to win the FBS version of the
- 57:25national championship. But if everybody's going to
- 57:28compete for one title, yeah, probably not here for that.
- 57:33But yeah, look, it's I just applaud the NCAA for at least
- 57:38being willing to finally talk about it because we all know
- 57:40this 18 and 12 points six and six coaches.
- 57:44Like that's not the right math, right?
- 57:47Like we know that like the, the, the Kosh athlete ratio of 12 16,
- 57:52right? 6.
- 57:53Times. 16 is 96, right? That's not right.
- 57:57We know, that's not right. And so, you know, we probably
- 58:00need more coaches. I don't know how many I don't
- 58:03know what the, you know, what? We can really stand and, and we
- 58:07might need more levels to, I don't know.
- 58:10But we, I think we all agree that. 18 and 12 point six and
- 58:15six coaches like that math isn't, right?
- 58:21Okay, I don't think anybody's ever going to disagree with you
- 58:25that, that math is wrong several, when he comes the 50.
- 58:29But other than that, I think that this is a bigger issue for
- 58:35me is, I think it's a horrible idea.
- 58:38I don't think it'll ever happen and I totally disagree that.
- 58:43See if they want to give you more scholarships, IMA clock
- 58:46gives more scholarship. Don't make any account.
- 58:49But the only problem is is like a, if you give us 25.
- 58:53Okay, you're cutting the roster and have and if I'm trying to
- 58:55fill them full team as well as across the country team that
- 58:59means there's there's a there's a big chunk of my people that
- 59:02don't exist on my team anymore. So I think if we went to a head
- 59:05count sport in might level the plane because now the shouldn't
- 59:13say this because I'm smiling to jump all over this one the guy
- 59:16that I get the runs 10 for they come for 30% company and so he
- 59:20goes someplace Nuclide was going to laugh about that before he
- 59:27said. Okay, that's not true.
- 59:32No, no, there are 48 people on my
- 59:47roster, right? If I am because I'm trying to do
- 59:51what I I do and I'm trying to have a balanced program.
- 59:55There's people that are very good people on my team that
- 59:58wouldn't be okay. It's like seems you only got 25
- 1:00:03okay? You got like football, you gotta
- 1:00:0585 scholarships, right? 22 of them plus so you can stack
- 1:00:09right, if you only got 25, 25 scholarships to cover 21 event
- 1:00:15can't stack anywhere. So I disagree, I think if you
- 1:00:19went to that model, it would make it more of a Place.
- 1:00:23But also it's going to eliminate so many opportunities because
- 1:00:26the number of people that we can give the smaller scholarship to
- 1:00:29to get them into school. Yeah.
- 1:00:31Right. That's so now they can't come to
- 1:00:33University, its water because I can't get him in school, unless
- 1:00:35you get me scum, she was all right, so I think for me, I
- 1:00:40think that making it a headcount Sport and will probably make the
- 1:00:45next, you know, making some Humanity needs better, and
- 1:00:47definitely at the lower level, they're talking about the group
- 1:00:50of five schools. You're gonna have better
- 1:00:52athletes. Better pool to choose from
- 1:00:53because we can't scholarship everybody, right?
- 1:00:56But the problem you're going to have is limitations, put some
- 1:01:00people to be able to get in the school, it ruins the academic
- 1:01:03experience there. And that guy, I just think it's
- 1:01:08a bad idea call the library. So the one part that I have
- 1:01:13talked about in the past in regards to that and and picking
- 1:01:16up all the pieces that you all have laid down is in the team
- 1:01:19aspect. Then do we start seeing people
- 1:01:22straight away from that team aspect and just simply specify
- 1:01:27specialized, right? Because if you're in a 25-year
- 1:01:30big-league power, A head count at even go stronger in that
- 1:01:38direction. Like I'm not going to have a
- 1:01:40distance but or I'm not going to have even her window.
- 1:01:44Yes, people are going to be who they're going to be right?
- 1:01:49So sore loser, whatever. The rules are Lucius believes
- 1:01:53in, what he believes in, and he's going to try to build his
- 1:01:55team. That way the governor might say,
- 1:01:59you know, what, damn that we're going to put all 25 in the
- 1:02:02Sprints. And we go see, what's what Maybe
- 1:02:05that works and maybe it doesn't. But there will be people out
- 1:02:09there that will try it, right? Like the rules aren't going to
- 1:02:13aren't gonna change the hard core beliefs of coaches in the
- 1:02:17way they build their program. They just won't know.
- 1:02:20But I will say this, if I had 25 scholarship, I put them all the
- 1:02:23field events and I said to me, I drove to the meat.
- 1:02:26Ready, like, what's going on the track?
- 1:02:30I have no idea. We don't have any of those.
- 1:02:34Somebody Ever body will somebody?
- 1:02:37Somebody will absolutely do that and if you think about it
- 1:02:40there's some scary. No, that would be better for.
- 1:02:43I would have been, you would literally stop trying to do what
- 1:02:46you shouldn't be doing. I have to believe that if they
- 1:02:50did that cross would get their own allotment.
- 1:02:54You can't tell me. They would have to they the
- 1:02:57cross team would be a separate entity.
- 1:03:00Okay, I can tell you that, it's written because they don't have
- 1:03:03scholarships now. Now, hmm.
- 1:03:06So if Cross isn't separate, that makes the matter even worse,
- 1:03:12because he tells this model is going to hurt a lot of different
- 1:03:17people. Depending on what your mindset,
- 1:03:19right, it's going to get, it's going to hurt the student
- 1:03:22athlete that had they get the scholarship to get it to school.
- 1:03:25Yeah. Right.
- 1:03:26It's gonna hurt the student athlete that you know, where the
- 1:03:30coach D emphasize a certain areas because okay, I've been
- 1:03:33able to fund my cross-country And because I didn't have to
- 1:03:37worry about this. Now, I have to give them all a
- 1:03:41full so you got to have seven of those.
- 1:03:44Yeah, these 728 to be successful.
- 1:03:47So now you got the problem Jim, I Gotta Give they got eight.
- 1:04:04Hey, that is an ugly reality. I'm ugly reality show because
- 1:04:11it's so, because it would have such a great effect on that
- 1:04:17entity, it shall never happen. Never happen here, right?
- 1:04:23Yeah, I don't know. I will say this.
- 1:04:25It definitely not going to happen without like the only way
- 1:04:29it can possibly happen. His cross-country gets their own
- 1:04:32scholarship. Yeah.
- 1:04:33That is literally the only way that that can have even the
- 1:04:37slightest iteration. Mmm.
- 1:04:41But anyway, what else do you got?
- 1:04:45This is the other question that we had in the chat this week and
- 1:04:49you know it went left and right and then spurred other
- 1:04:52conversations but I'm going to umbrella and let the
- 1:04:55conversation kind of go with a couple points.
- 1:04:58So for us on the tiles, what are the important things when
- 1:05:03recruiting as in who we recruit? When are we recruiting?
- 1:05:09Where are we recruiting? Who was involved in the
- 1:05:11recruiting, so aspects of those things.
- 1:05:14But even outside of that, what is important for us.
- 1:05:18As we are doing all things. Recruiting, I will say what I
- 1:05:27said. Via text while we were having
- 1:05:30that conversation, like that's such a, such a personal issue.
- 1:05:36It's so it's so specific to where you are.
- 1:05:40Who you're working for, and what the goals of said, organization
- 1:05:45are? I mean, you know, I'm currently
- 1:05:49the head coach of San Jose State University, right?
- 1:05:52Right. My priorities in recruiting,
- 1:05:55here are totally different than my priorities in recruiting,
- 1:06:00when I was working for Richie being at Alabama State, not
- 1:06:04necessarily, because me and Richie, and you have such
- 1:06:07drastically different visions of a program.
- 1:06:09But Case in point. I am, I what?
- 1:06:13I do, I'm a Sprint. Her guy, right?
- 1:06:16Well, respectfully, the state of Alabama isn't flush with
- 1:06:20sprinting hurdle town. So, when I'm working at Alabama
- 1:06:24State School, my priority is not the Dominate, the state of
- 1:06:27Alabama. I don't care about that.
- 1:06:30Hmm. But I live in California.
- 1:06:32My priority is to get as many of these homegrown kids stay here
- 1:06:36as possible because if I do, I can be good instantly at a real
- 1:06:41level. Those are different priorities
- 1:06:43that would necessarily be the case if I was working up in
- 1:06:46western Washington or something like that, right?
- 1:06:49So I think it's so personal to all the aspects of where and how
- 1:06:54you're working that that answer is going to be different for
- 1:06:56everybody. But I will say that no matter
- 1:06:59where you work, you have to have at least the respect and eyes on
- 1:07:06you in your local community. At your local community doesn't
- 1:07:09see value in your program. It's going to be difficult to
- 1:07:12get others to see aliens. I mean, obviously I've been to,
- 1:07:22you know, three blue blood universities.
- 1:07:26I've had a chance to watch some of the very best do what they
- 1:07:29do. And I've taken lessons from all
- 1:07:34of that to this situation and I'm in now and, you know,
- 1:07:39building a culture building, a winning culture has many Many
- 1:07:46faces of that, it can look two thousand different ways and you
- 1:07:53can still get the job done, you know.
- 1:07:57So I think it boils down to knowing your terrain.
- 1:08:04First of all, Knowing your limitations, knowing your, your
- 1:08:11parameters, right? And, and then knowing your
- 1:08:18conference for the majority of universities out there, you
- 1:08:22know, you get outside of the power 5.
- 1:08:26It's about winning conference. That's what it is.
- 1:08:29Period Point Blank. So there you have your starting
- 1:08:33point in terms of what your athletic.
- 1:08:37You know what your Administration wants?
- 1:08:40Then you start to work on, okay? Who are the ones who are the
- 1:08:46athletes that are going to go above and beyond.
- 1:08:49And so for me, you know what, what I've created is is a
- 1:08:54situation where you have you know now you know Solutions may
- 1:08:59have 20 guys I got the top is Disney look like this but you
- 1:09:12know for programs like myself Well, you know you have this one
- 1:09:16guy at the top, right? Or this one, young lady at the
- 1:09:19top that is above and beyond, you know, in many respects, you
- 1:09:24know, people are looking at her or him and going how, how did
- 1:09:26you do that? You know.
- 1:09:28And it might have been in someone that was unsung wasn't
- 1:09:31wasn't really highly recruited came here with a chip on their
- 1:09:35shoulder, you know, coach happen to see that and say, hey, come
- 1:09:39here, I'll give you a chance. And so you have a situation
- 1:09:42where This young man, a young woman is being supported by the
- 1:09:47general body of the team, right. They're all looking to get to
- 1:09:53that point, right? But you're trying to find kids
- 1:09:57and now you're going around in your searching wherever under
- 1:10:01every Rock. Every tree every corner to find
- 1:10:05kids that have that same vision, right?
- 1:10:08And that's pretty much how I've approached it.
- 1:10:13I think the win does not matter. There was a point in time when
- 1:10:20you had to get it done. If you were looking for the blue
- 1:10:24chippers and you have to sign them by November and you know,
- 1:10:28it's not you have to wait till April and then it became
- 1:10:30February, none of that matters. Now, none of that matters.
- 1:10:35Now, now it is purely about going out and finding the best,
- 1:10:40the best that can be. I'm do the job and, you know,
- 1:10:46it's a pretty random mean sayshe random but it's a pretty blanket
- 1:10:51thing to say. But if you get a team, you
- 1:10:56gather a team of the best kids, you can possibly, that is a
- 1:11:00winning team, period Point Blank.
- 1:11:04So accept Well, I'll go before, you know, the portal King
- 1:11:11speaks. I mean, we gave you that
- 1:11:16nickname like these. So I had to bring it back TK,
- 1:11:25I've had the, I've lived a life and the in an inverted pyramid,
- 1:11:32I've lived a life in unenviable task of trying to live up to to
- 1:11:37that standard had a place that That that is clearly doable just
- 1:11:45way different. And I'll say, I don't want to
- 1:11:49oversimplify. I definitely not going to tell
- 1:11:50anybody how to do this, but I will tell you this, this is,
- 1:11:53this is what I believe. The first thing you do is you
- 1:11:56identify exactly what you're looking for.
- 1:12:00Byways of athletes, like, demeanor, make up those things,
- 1:12:05and then put a pin in where you currently work and make a radius
- 1:12:11of 200. Miles and make a circle.
- 1:12:16Everybody within that Circle, right?
- 1:12:20Everybody within that Circle that fits.
- 1:12:25A piece of what you're talking about, like one of the type of
- 1:12:28athletes, you want that, you've liked, be a distance, Runner,
- 1:12:32thrower, whatever it is, you go and you recruit the living snot
- 1:12:37out of that group and make them all tell, you know, twice before
- 1:12:40you move off. And you fill your coffers that
- 1:12:44way because they'll be the most likely to come and the least
- 1:12:47expensive from there. You eliminate all borders all
- 1:12:52boundaries and you fill holes At the very very best talent you
- 1:12:55can. So after the 200 mile radius
- 1:12:59literally you start going on the other side of the world like go
- 1:13:03everywhere. Like don't go from 200 miles to
- 1:13:05250 like that's that's don't do that to me to me.
- 1:13:10But you start with that group. That's will call them local and
- 1:13:15then from there, you fill in the holes with them.
- 1:13:17Very very, very best athletes. That fit your criteria, right?
- 1:13:24Like if you know, if you knew that, you know, you need, you
- 1:13:28know, certain type of mentality in this, is that to work well,
- 1:13:31with you and the kid has marks you want but the mentality
- 1:13:34doesn't match. Don't sign that kid because
- 1:13:38there's an expression, if you recruit the right one and you
- 1:13:40don't get them, they beat you once or twice a year, but if you
- 1:13:43recruit the wrong one and you do get them, they beat you every
- 1:13:45day. so I think knowing what kind of athletes Work well in
- 1:13:55your system and with you and your staff is probably the first
- 1:13:58thing to do when recruiting perspective.
- 1:14:01But then after that like listen, It's just like being in a fight.
- 1:14:06You have to start out with the mentality that you're going to
- 1:14:09stand up one more time than you, get knocked out because
- 1:14:12recruiting is stick-to-itiveness There are more kids than there
- 1:14:17are scholarships. If you're willing to work, this
- 1:14:23is why sir lucious. I don't know 25 years ago called
- 1:14:27me the mole because I refuse to believe that there aren't kids
- 1:14:32to do everything you need them to do that aren't on the list.
- 1:14:38You just have to look at more kids.
- 1:14:42Young people are not kids but you have to, if you want to be
- 1:14:46great at recruiting, you have to be willing to work way harder
- 1:14:53than everybody else. Because so lucious works hard.
- 1:14:57I want to be clear, he works hard at recruiting but he
- 1:15:02doesn't necessarily have to do your version of working hard at
- 1:15:07San Jose State. Or your version of working hard
- 1:15:10at UTSA right? Like 22, collides Point, working
- 1:15:14hard for where you work. Is different from place to
- 1:15:17place, right? And if you're trying to beat
- 1:15:20sir, Lucius then you probably have to work globally.
- 1:15:25Right? Because he's going to beat you
- 1:15:26in most of the kids that are American more than likely.
- 1:15:31And so if you're going to try to beat him, you got to go
- 1:15:33everywhere and you got it, you got it like that.
- 1:15:38At the end of the day, like that's it.
- 1:15:40Right? And and the hard part, for a lot
- 1:15:42of people to understand is when you're building a program, when
- 1:15:45your program wasn't good when you took it, The kids, the young
- 1:15:50people, who are closest to you, who are most proximal to your
- 1:15:55campus, are going to be the hardest and the last ones for
- 1:15:58you to get, because they already have seen what their own two
- 1:16:01eyes. For the longest amount of time.
- 1:16:03How not good? You are. so, for me recruiting
- 1:16:10is The desired just never having the like dialing the phone one
- 1:16:17more time or getting on Instagram one more time than
- 1:16:20everybody else. That's my thing.
- 1:16:26Thanks for me. Recruiting is about planning.
- 1:16:32Recruiting is about. Checking your ego at the door.
- 1:16:39And the big thing about recruiting is is like get
- 1:16:42through to your strength. So I'm fortunate enough to have
- 1:16:45a staff. We can coach just about anything
- 1:16:47but when people start recruiting athletes that they can't take
- 1:16:52care of you, just build a whole that they're going to get out of
- 1:16:55because if I did a great athlete, come to your campus,
- 1:16:57you can't take care of them that comes back to haunt you in
- 1:17:00recruiting forever. But for us because we're trying
- 1:17:04to be a well-balanced team. We searched the corners of the
- 1:17:08globe and we would do everything we had to do.
- 1:17:11It's not about winning the State of Florida.
- 1:17:13It's about not about when United States is about what in the
- 1:17:17globe crust. So, there's an athlete out there
- 1:17:21and they have the grades and have the athletic ability, have
- 1:17:23the mentality. And we want them on this campus.
- 1:17:26Yeah, we want, we want them to come and help us get better, so
- 1:17:29we can help them get better. But I think the biggest They can
- 1:17:32remain in recruiting is people that think they can just go to
- 1:17:35anyone. I mean, they're they're starting
- 1:17:36to have weights that, you know, still, my attack will bring to
- 1:17:39me. I'm like that that young man or
- 1:17:42young woman was having a well work.
- 1:17:43Well here because of a certain look or something that they do
- 1:17:46it like this, just how powerful. I know my system, I know what
- 1:17:48happens work on myself, so I think you have to be diligent.
- 1:17:52And that we said this, I know probably a thousand times.
- 1:17:55Stop, recruiting marks, you know, Get on Up, Get on Up.
- 1:18:00Get on a plane go again. New car, you know, Gil get on
- 1:18:03YouTube if I these people are look up so that that's that's
- 1:18:07about that's my thoughts on recruiting Solutions.
- 1:18:09Let me ask a question. No matter how many times we say
- 1:18:12people will still do it. Why do you think people still
- 1:18:14continue to just recruit marks? Is it laziness or the lack of
- 1:18:19know-how? Or what's your okay lady, it's
- 1:18:23laziness no and it see the thing is it's like, you know I've had
- 1:18:28a discussion with more than once a little last say You're too.
- 1:18:32Why did you recruit someone? So when he or she had only done
- 1:18:36this. I like, because I was there and
- 1:18:40I saw them do something that I knew that they could be better,
- 1:18:44you know? I I'll use young lady, Daryl,
- 1:18:47material McQueen and, you know, one of my colleagues and
- 1:18:51coaching called me and lasted me goes, oh, I made you overspend
- 1:18:54for that one. Like you sure about that.
- 1:18:57Yo, three years later. She's still, she was 19 feet in
- 1:19:01a little over 40 feet. What?
- 1:19:02We signed her, three years later, she's 21:11 and 45:5
- 1:19:07didn't overspend for that one. We saw something in there, we
- 1:19:10knew she had the ability and when I, you know, when I met
- 1:19:13with her, I knew she was going to put the work in.
- 1:19:16And I also knew what a training background was but people don't
- 1:19:19usually go that far down the list.
- 1:19:21They don't they wanted to recruit those people, you know.
- 1:19:23So you got to do your homework, you got to be diligent and
- 1:19:26everything you do. And there's some Hidden Gem,
- 1:19:28though. It really are.
- 1:19:31There really are. I Miss Melissa from Coastal
- 1:19:37Carolina. I agree.
- 1:19:39And 12 flower and 12:00 last night school US champion.
- 1:19:50Well, good good. I want to make sure that we got
- 1:19:53at least a little bit of a Education, it's not record.
- 1:19:58Course, refresher for recruiting in there, making sure that we
- 1:20:03still are giving advice but letting peeps.
- 1:20:06See a little bit of vulnerability from us.
- 1:20:09So good. With that being said,
- 1:20:12invulnerability so lucious your own.
- 1:20:16Would you rather? Because I'm not gonna let you
- 1:20:17skip last week, and I had the pleasure of watching that I'm so
- 1:20:24glad I didn't get those. Well, my God.
- 1:20:27So I can only imagine how this week's going to be when you
- 1:20:30double it at your double double walk again.
- 1:20:35I think they're all right. Are you ready sir?
- 1:20:42Absolutely. I am.
- 1:20:44Would you rather be on SportsCenter or around the horn?
- 1:20:49All round the horn. I had a feeling I'd be around
- 1:20:52the horn. I like I like to be like,
- 1:20:56highlight on SportsCenter, or maybe even taker or
- 1:20:59SportsCenter, but I want to be who I want to be on the show.
- 1:21:03I don't want to know. I want to be alone, right?
- 1:21:10Would you rather do a session of yoga or Pilates?
- 1:21:44Or be the candy Giver. Okay.
- 1:21:47Do you got it? Would you rather clean up Legos
- 1:21:52or Play-Doh Echoes? Last one.
- 1:22:01Would you rather be the would you rather rake the pit or be
- 1:22:04the bar? Put her upper for her mobile
- 1:22:07bar? Put her up for because I'm the
- 1:22:09worst pitmaker in the history of man and so then you know, the
- 1:22:13jump coaches like could take some men to admit that.
- 1:22:17It really does not like you know, it's like I just there's
- 1:22:20going to be a lot somewhere. You're that guy.
- 1:22:47That was your power that might be that might be in your best
- 1:22:49set of questions for all as absolutely.
- 1:22:51Absolutely. Because those ones she did she
- 1:22:53said to you last week so glad that was funny.
- 1:23:04Look, I was laughing when you asked
- 1:23:17All right, I got to trap me wearing a suit
- 1:23:41or one of those monochrome tracksuits head to toe.
- 1:23:46Right, let's just say some more orange like, which one do we go
- 1:23:51with the suit? But we you said I was a suit.
- 1:23:55I do. The second choice was going to
- 1:23:56be awful. So I mean,
- 1:24:19I don't know what to say. Let the EP have the last one
- 1:24:25here since we were discussing recruiting if you could only
- 1:24:30recruit one state for the rest of your career, who what would
- 1:24:34it mean? Before you answer, this is the
- 1:24:38best question that has been asked on this show.
- 1:24:41This is freaking awesome. We talk, is this is our bases
- 1:24:46here, okay, all right, I can't wait.
- 1:24:52One state, huh? One?
- 1:24:53Sting walk your way. I'm going home.
- 1:24:55I'm going to great state of wild baby.
- 1:24:57Wow, wow. Okay Hey, looks I promise you.
- 1:25:04I'm gonna get everything I need out of 10.
- 1:25:08Trust me. I am I don't even know if I can
- 1:25:16follow that. Oh my goodness.
- 1:25:32Concede, if you need to get by yourself anymore time.
- 1:25:35Okay. So so lucious if you Could only
- 1:25:44coach one event for the rest of your career and it could not be
- 1:25:53any of the ones you currently coach.
- 1:25:58Which one would it be? Okay.
- 1:26:06Wow, so that's being invested. No, 1248 the 1248 any hurdles
- 1:26:15either relay? I think I got them.
- 1:26:18All right. I was about to cheat a date on
- 1:26:22it, but I close to 800 right now.
- 1:26:24So that's why I said, Actually, I'll be honest with you, I had a
- 1:26:39sneaking suspicion that was going to be the answer.
- 1:26:44Okay, let's go. At the next Elite group, I just
- 1:26:54tickle myself at that one. Yes, you did.
- 1:26:57You start laughing for you? Three years ago?
- 1:27:01You showed up all in bodysuits to run to run the 6K at the
- 1:27:05national meeting. That's not.
- 1:27:27So all right. Transitioning to a letting
- 1:27:31letting people have some love that are here to receive it.
- 1:27:37Hurry props gentleman. Yes, like that I'm going to keep
- 1:27:50mine short and sweet. Anyone that knows me knows that.
- 1:27:56I'm A hip-hop head and You know, hip-hop has been a driving force
- 1:28:04in my life since. I mean, since I was a kid in the
- 1:28:09Cayman Islands, discovering the Beastie, Boys and discovering
- 1:28:13LL. Cool, J.
- 1:28:14And all of that. I don't know what's going on in
- 1:28:20or in my in my that genre. But it is, it is it is bordering
- 1:28:27on like this is this is, this is, it's not, it's not funny
- 1:28:33anymore. The amount of artists that are
- 1:28:36being killed you know, it's shocking, it's shocking and I
- 1:28:45just pray that You know, either these folks stop putting
- 1:28:51themselves in these situations. Or people start to realize that,
- 1:28:57you know, hip-hop is a voice of a generation like these.
- 1:29:01These people that do this are saying, the things that some of
- 1:29:05us are far too scared to say they are they have a purpose
- 1:29:13and, you know, it's, you know, it's just sad what's going on
- 1:29:16right now. And I hope somewhere along the
- 1:29:20line these people start to to understand We're hurting
- 1:29:24ourselves. It's all we're doing.
- 1:29:27So it's my heartbeat props. - actually for once, I haven't
- 1:29:35like super excited and Ultra positive my heart be perhaps go
- 1:29:40out to one mister Kurt Felix for going into the Boise State Hall
- 1:29:48of Fame this coming weekend. Yeah, I feel incredibly
- 1:29:52fortunate that I was asked to join the festivities and I'm
- 1:29:58about as excited as one could ever be, to be returning to
- 1:30:02Boise Idaho. Wow.
- 1:30:06Very cool and well deserved very cool and well deserved I would
- 1:30:12like to say congrats cart Felix and excited to return to Boise
- 1:30:18Idaho. No one has ever said before
- 1:30:19tonight, first of all I'm going to say this right now.
- 1:30:24I am not here for any Boise slander Boise Idaho wasn't his
- 1:30:31is amazing I wasn't slandering anything.
- 1:30:36I would like to say for the record that I think everybody on
- 1:30:39the panel. The safe.
- 1:30:45I think Boise Idaho is a great place.
- 1:30:49Gosh you're right, it's phenomenal.
- 1:30:52I would I would stop short of calling a great place.
- 1:30:57I will say that it's underrated. We'll stop there.
- 1:31:04I'll live with that. That's Rick lat.
- 1:31:10I mean, I'll go. I just, I just want to, you
- 1:31:13know, I want to say thank you to everybody the number of people
- 1:31:19that have reached out to me over the last week, that it check on
- 1:31:24me about my mom. It's, it's, it's good to have a
- 1:31:29great friends and including the for you on the tiles tonight and
- 1:31:33everybody else's reach out to, as want to say, thank you.
- 1:31:35It's been It's been a big help. I really appreciate it.
- 1:31:43Similar, same Essence, similar Essence.
- 1:31:47This is a broad stroke because I'm not quite sure who is, and I
- 1:31:51know there are people who are but Harvey props to all those
- 1:31:55who are protecting. I know there are some direct, I
- 1:31:58bet I can name but there are people who are there who are
- 1:32:00protecting my name, and I appreciate that.
- 1:32:03And I think that's something that we have to make sure and
- 1:32:06stop to recognize from time to time just as human beings,
- 1:32:09whether it's professional personal.
- 1:32:12Or just not even knowingly. There, people who are protecting
- 1:32:16you and trying to make sure that things are going right or at the
- 1:32:21very least favorable for you. So, for those of you out there
- 1:32:26in The Ether who are in my corner that are protecting me
- 1:32:29and my name. And what not?
- 1:32:30I appreciate you because it's definitely being filmed right
- 1:32:33now. Okay.
- 1:32:37So mine is a happy heart be proper that doesn't mean I'm
- 1:32:40going to get through it. So it just so happens by the
- 1:32:47accident of timing for LLC that our shows are on Friday and so

- 1:32:59birthday which is awesome. But that means that you're

- 1:33:18became Kaiser rival? I obviously love my son and most
- 1:33:27people describe Noble birth of their child of this amazing
- 1:33:31experience. It was the worst day of my life.
- 1:33:33It was the worst three days of my life.
- 1:33:37I thought. That I might lose my best
- 1:33:40friend, and I remember a year ago today, being more scared
- 1:33:47than I've ever been ever in my life. and, The.
- 1:33:56The will and strength that that woman.
- 1:34:01Displayed To get through that process is something that
- 1:34:11obviously I will never forget, it's something that I never want
- 1:34:14to experience again but there's no way that on this day.
- 1:34:20My heart be props to go anywhere other than to Miss Madison kid.
- 1:34:30I love you. And I cannot believe that it's

- 1:35:33Love it. The nephew continues to
- 1:35:37dominate. Well, everyone, it's been fun.
- 1:35:44I think this was a great episode of just uplifting and and some
- 1:35:48bringing to light stuff and and just positivity.

- 1:35:58Blow out a candle for Kai this weekend everyone.
- 1:36:00I never the other than that we'll see each other soon.

- 1:36:38to start running, you gotta understand.
- 1:36:40Rapes, gotta catch Stars. Show you how to fight for, show
- 1:36:43us who you are, you lack experience?
- 1:36:46But still you want to talk and who is that?
- 1:36:48You talk to yourself. Got a small heads prevail when
- 1:36:51the backbone strong gotta keep it coming up.
- 1:36:54Won't last long, Pastor felt instead of the session and if
- 1:36:58you don't check yourself and that's wrong, just trying to
- 1:37:01give you the real bitch asshole. So why you keep cutting us off
- 1:37:05to a small? We put it.
- 1:37:06In slow-mo. What you fast for the task
- 1:37:11force? In slow-mo.
- 1:37:07What you fast for the task force?
