- 0:22Hello team. Good morning.
- 0:24Welcome to the Impact Ready podcast.
- 0:26Thank you for being here. We are getting really close to
- 0:302026, starting a new year, wrapping up this year.
- 0:35A lot of people are thinking about intentions and goals.
- 0:38I love all that stuff. I'm super into it.
- 0:41I think any time went well. And then also think ahead and
- 0:46plan for the future, sort of envision what you want for your
- 0:49life. All of that is a good thing, of
- 0:53course. I've been thinking about my past
- 0:55year. I've also been thinking about
- 0:57what I want for this next coming year.
- 1:01For me, the last year was filled with what what I would call a
- 1:06lot of interruptions. I'll just call them
- 1:08interruptions. Many of you know that in the
- 1:11past year I was going through treatment for breast cancer.
- 1:14I'm still actually dealing with some of the aftermath of that,
- 1:18although the bulk of the treatment is done.
- 1:20But something that I had to manage and just sort of accept
- 1:24as part of my reality is that treatment and everything that
- 1:27went with it in the last year created a lot of interruptions
- 1:30in my life. It interrupted my goals and my
- 1:34intentions. It interrupted my relationships
- 1:37and my ability to be social or go out into the world the way
- 1:40that I wanted to at times. It interrupted my work in some
- 1:45major ways. There were a lot of good lessons
- 1:48that came with those interruptions.
- 1:50I would venture to guess that I needed some of them.
- 1:55I think that when you come out of a situation that's
- 1:58challenging, you can reflect back and say, that's probably
- 2:01going to change me and I don't have enough space from it all to
- 2:05have clarity on what the impact is going to be.
- 2:08I'm too close to it. I think if you have a year or
- 2:11two away from a big event in your life, you can look back and
- 2:14say, oh, that's why that happened.
- 2:16Oh, that was really a catalyst for big change.
- 2:18Oh, that got me to make a decision that I wouldn't have
- 2:21necessarily made before. And I'm already starting to see
- 2:24that a little bit. But now that I'm getting to the
- 2:27other side of all of this stuff, I feel a really strong desire to
- 2:32close the loop on a lot of things that I started, but I
- 2:35wasn't able to complete one of my mantras right now.
- 2:39You could call it an intention or a statement.
- 2:43It's just something that I'm saying to myself often is finish
- 2:46line. I have it on a sticky note
- 2:50written stuck up on my whiteboard in my office so that
- 2:53I can see it everyday. And it's a reminder for me to
- 2:56get into action because I want to get my projects that I really
- 3:00care about that I've been excited about.
- 3:03I want to get them across the finish line.
- 3:05I want to be able to make plans for the future without worrying
- 3:08that I'll have to cancel them. I want to complete some of the
- 3:11tasks that I've started. And just reading that sticky
- 3:15note finish line up on my whiteboard, just, it gets me
- 3:18into action. It's a motivator for me.
- 3:20Those two words are just the distilled down version of an
- 3:24energy that I really want to bring into the new year, an
- 3:27energy that I'm feeling in my body right now.
- 3:30And there's a reason for this that goes beyond the obvious of
- 3:33getting shit done. This is also about closing open
- 3:38loops. We all have a ton of open loops
- 3:41in our life. We have unanswered text
- 3:44messages. We have phone calls we haven't
- 3:47returned. We have emails we haven't
- 3:48responded to, plans we haven't followed up on with people,
- 3:53Conversations that we haven't had that we probably know we
- 3:56need to have. Of course, we have projects and
- 3:59tasks that we've started but we haven't completed.
- 4:02Those are all what I consider open loops.
- 4:06And it can be stressful as hell to have hundreds of open loops
- 4:10because when we say that we're going to do something or we've
- 4:13committed to starting a process, but we haven't followed through
- 4:15or finished it, it creates a loop in our mind that remains
- 4:20open. We're not able to close it and
- 4:22it weighs on us. It's something that sits in the
- 4:25back of our minds. It's like it's on the back
- 4:27burner all the time and we can't fully let it go until it's done.
- 4:31Think of the amount of bandwidth that all those open loops are
- 4:36taking up mentally and emotionally.
- 4:38Not to mention, a lot of times our open loops have an impact on
- 4:43what I would think about as our sense of integrity.
- 4:46For example, if we say that we're going to do something and
- 4:49we don't follow up on it or we don't do it, we don't do what we
- 4:52say we're going to do, it chips away at our sense of integrity.
- 4:58And I'm not saying that you have to respond to every e-mail or
- 5:01every text message that you ever receive.
- 5:03I mean, for some people, that's just not realistic to keep up on
- 5:05every bit of communication for every open loop that's ever been
- 5:09created. I get that.
- 5:11But maybe thinking about this idea of open loops and finish
- 5:16line, maybe this is an opportunity to take a closer
- 5:19look at what kind of open loops you create in your life.
- 5:23Maybe we don't need to be a part of every conversation that's
- 5:26happening in the world. We don't need to be on every
- 5:28text chain or every e-mail thread.
- 5:31Maybe we don't have to say yes to all the things that we've
- 5:33said yes to. Maybe we can be a little more
- 5:35discerning about how we use our time.
- 5:38Maybe we don't have to pack our calendar to the brim and then
- 5:41end up having to cancel things because we're tired or or
- 5:45overwhelmed. Maybe we can be a little more
- 5:47focused in the work that we do so that the projects that we
- 5:51start are purposeful and we'll actually move the needle because
- 5:55the ability to prioritize tasks and information is a skill.
- 5:59It's something we could get better at and there are a couple
- 6:02questions that I think about when taking on projects or
- 6:05giving yeses to things or people.
- 6:09And these questions help me protect my peace a little bit
- 6:12more. Also, I think they'll help me
- 6:14have a year where I'm creating more, I'm consuming less, and
- 6:18actually making more progress on the goals that I really care
- 6:21about. The first question that I would
- 6:23ask myself is, is this open loop?
- 6:25I'm creating something that I'll be able to close because
- 6:29sometimes not being able to close the loop is going to be
- 6:33more of a stressor than the benefit of taking it on.
- 6:37And then the second question I'd ask myself is what do I need to
- 6:40do to get this across the finish line?
- 6:43Because sometimes we have to weigh out is the energy is what
- 6:47I have to sacrifice to get this across the finish line.
- 6:50Is it worth it to me? And if the answer is yes, then I
- 6:54want to follow through on that. If it's no, then maybe it's not
- 6:56something I take on. What do we need to do to get
- 6:59this across the finish line? For me personally, I think about
- 7:03this stuff because I want more peace in my life and I know that
- 7:06I will have that as a result of closing some of these loops that
- 7:10are going on. I'll have more emotional and
- 7:12mental bandwidth and that will translate into more energy, and
- 7:16I'll just feel a greater sense of personal accomplishment and
- 7:19pride overall, like I always do when I get things across the
- 7:23finish line. If I take into account the
- 7:27formula that we talked about in coaching and on this podcast,
- 7:31insight plus action equals transformation.
- 7:35I know that getting things across the finish line is
- 7:37absolutely crucial to get to the future that I want so badly.
- 7:42And I have a clear vision for what it is.
- 7:44I know what I want. I know where I'm trying to go,
- 7:47and I understand how deeply powerful motion and momentum are
- 7:52to arriving at those places. The great thing is, even if I
- 7:57didn't know what I wanted, even if the future was totally foggy
- 7:59and I had no clarity around what the vision was going to be,
- 8:03taking action is still one of the most powerful things I could
- 8:06do. Why?
- 8:07Because that action piece is what creates more clarity.
- 8:12It creates more confidence. It's through the act of doing
- 8:16that we get clear on the things that we want.
- 8:19It's sifting and sorting through experiences and all that leads
- 8:23to opportunities that might have been hidden before when I was
- 8:26feeling stuck or stagnant when I wasn't in motion.
- 8:30So whatever your future vision looks like, and even if you
- 8:34can't see the future vision, you might be in the fog, you might
- 8:39be lacking clarity, none of that matters.
- 8:41All you have to do is think about getting into action, think
- 8:45about motion and momentum, think about trying to take things
- 8:49across the finish line and consider closing some of these
- 8:52open loops. I guarantee you're going to
- 8:55start feeling like a more empowered version of yourself,
- 8:58like someone who makes things happen in their life.
- 9:02I know we're getting towards the end of the year.
- 9:04I know a lot of people want to sort of cruise to the end of the
- 9:07year, but I still think that there's room for us to finish a
- 9:11lot of things strong. I still think there's time to
- 9:14get some things across the finish line that are really
- 9:16important to you, and you can still have your time to relax
- 9:19and connect with the people you love and celebrate.
- 9:22It just requires a little bit of energy and a little bit of
- 9:25intention to get into that action so you can close some of
- 9:28those open loops. I hope you have a great rest of
- 9:32your week. Thank you for being here and for
