- 0:15Speaker 1: You can sign up to win a pair of tickets
- 0:18Speaker 1: for Broncos Bills tomorrow courtesy of our friends at bud Light.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We'll do the giveaway. I don't know, nobody's given me
- 0:25Speaker 1: any details, but that don't happen Saturday.
- 0:29Speaker 2: People are running it. We're gonna let them do.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And they're ready to do it exactly.
- 0:32Speaker 2: We although you and I usually do announce the name.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They make us announce yeah, and then I inevitably make
- 0:38Speaker 1: fun of the person's name. It becomes a whole thing.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Karen once, what are you gonna do.
- 0:44Speaker 1: When you got a bit y' lean into it? Jeff
- 0:46Speaker 1: Legwall to ESPN, he's got a busy day ahead of
- 0:50Speaker 1: himself tomorrow covering Broncos and Bills out there at Mile High.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Leggy is with us right now on a Friday afternoon,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and Leggy, we start with this, what's the deal with
- 1:01Speaker 1: Caleb Loner? What's going on? What? What?
- 1:04Speaker 3: What?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Kind of mind games are Darren Rizzy and Sean Payton
- 1:07Speaker 1: trying to play on us.
- 1:09Speaker 4: I don't know if it's mine game, but uh, I
- 1:12Speaker 4: would have I think I've seen enough in practice that
- 1:16Speaker 4: he would have been an intriguing red zone addition to
- 1:19Speaker 4: the roster for me, even if his route tree was
- 1:22Speaker 4: limited or even you know, and you'd be tipping plays
- 1:26Speaker 4: probably when you brought him in. But uh, he's a
- 1:29Speaker 4: he's a rare athlete, and I think he could have
- 1:32Speaker 4: scored some touchdowns this year. But that's just my little
- 1:36Speaker 4: timmy the sports writer scouting.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Report on that.
- 1:39Speaker 4: But uh, it's you know, it's probably one of two.
- 1:42Speaker 4: They either have a very specific plan for him in
- 1:46Speaker 4: some special team's role or even in the offense, or sometimes, uh,
- 1:52Speaker 4: if you're you know, if your roster is healthy the
- 1:56Speaker 4: way the Broncos are. Every player on the active roster
- 2:00Speaker 4: practiced this week, so that is rare health for a
- 2:04Speaker 4: team this late in the season. If you're that healthy,
- 2:07Speaker 4: sometimes it can be a little bump for a guy
- 2:10Speaker 4: who's been on the practice squad all.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Season and didn't get an elevation.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So it can be a lot of things. But I'm
- 2:19Speaker 4: intrigued by it. I hope he's active, and I hope
- 2:22Speaker 4: he gets to play in the game because I liked
- 2:25Speaker 4: him coming out. I like the athleticism, and I've got
- 2:29Speaker 4: to believe an NFL coach can find a way to
- 2:33Speaker 4: turn a guy with that kind of length and vertical
- 2:35Speaker 4: jump into a red zone option.
- 2:39Speaker 2: All right, you know what, I would definitely take that
- 2:41Speaker 2: if they can get that going, because, let's be honest,
- 2:44Speaker 2: the tight Ends production again, despite getting a joker, as
- 2:47Speaker 2: we were all promised, that tight End production has been
- 2:49Speaker 2: a little bit lacking in my book. But whatever, what
- 2:52Speaker 2: is As we get to the end of the week,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you've told us all the breakdown. You got to test
- 2:57Speaker 2: the edge on these guys. Rundy is great, on and
- 3:01Speaker 2: on and on. Who do you think is the main
- 3:03Speaker 2: featured back tomorrow? Is it can remain r J.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Harvey.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It is Surprises with an actual healthy dose of Julia McLoughlin.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I don't know that they've had a feature back for
- 3:11Speaker 4: a little bit, but I think it's, you know, Harvey's
- 3:16Speaker 4: in the you know, they tag plays for personnel. Sean's
- 3:22Speaker 4: very big on tagging very specific groupings in plays for
- 3:26Speaker 4: specific personnel, and you know, Harvey's still getting tagged for
- 3:30Speaker 4: more plays than the rest of the guys. So but
- 3:33Speaker 4: I do think Julio has opened their eyes a bit
- 3:36Speaker 4: that every time he touches the ball. I think he's
- 3:40Speaker 4: easily their most decisive runner at the moment, and he's
- 3:44Speaker 4: frankly been the most productive of late. So I think they,
- 3:49Speaker 4: you know, we're in the same old riddle, you know.
- 3:51Speaker 4: They they say they want to get the ball in
- 3:53Speaker 4: the hands of guys like that more, and then we
- 3:57Speaker 4: don't always see that. You know, Mimes will continually be
- 4:00Speaker 4: the exhibit.
- 4:01Speaker 3: A for that.
- 4:02Speaker 4: But you know, and I think, honestly, you know, and Mike,
- 4:07Speaker 4: you've called plays, but I think the quick perimeter shot
- 4:11Speaker 4: to Mims is really a run play that could work
- 4:14Speaker 4: against these guys that you know well, you know, some
- 4:17Speaker 4: pin and pull I think would be great in the
- 4:19Speaker 4: run game against these guys.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Anything where you can fold the corner.
- 4:23Speaker 4: On this defense with Jaliel or Mims or even Harvey,
- 4:28Speaker 4: I think it's gonna work. And I think the only
- 4:31Speaker 4: reason the Broncos are playing the Bills tomorrow is because
- 4:33Speaker 4: Jacksonville didn't do it enough.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and especially with the defense, it's fairly banged up,
- 4:40Speaker 5: particularly in the back end. Jordan Poyer a huge part
- 4:42Speaker 5: of the of the run defense is probably you know,
- 4:45Speaker 5: he and Cole Bishop have have had to tidy up
- 4:48Speaker 5: some things that maybe have gotten screwed up on the edge.
- 4:51Speaker 5: What do you think is what would be the reason
- 4:54Speaker 5: that the Denver Broncos don't run the football more than
- 4:59Speaker 5: fifteen times tomorrow? Is it would there be any reason
- 5:02Speaker 5: for that? And I'm talking about real designed handoff runs.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Jacksonville. I thought the same thing.
- 5:08Speaker 4: But Jacksonville had fourteen carries by their running backs.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Yeah in that game.
- 5:14Speaker 4: And you know Twoting, I think he had forty seven
- 5:17Speaker 4: yards on three consecutive carries.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, four carries in the game. It was it was
- 5:21Speaker 1: a miscarriage of football justice.
- 5:24Speaker 4: He touches the ball one more time in the game
- 5:26Speaker 4: and that the Broncos have to avoid. But you you
- 5:29Speaker 4: do that because of what Leon Cohne did, and you
- 5:33Speaker 4: and Sean Payton can't do. You cannot fall in love
- 5:36Speaker 4: with the idea of of you know, like in hockey,
- 5:40Speaker 4: that the power play goal doesn't count unless it's a
- 5:44Speaker 4: one time or in the goalie doesn't move. You know,
- 5:47Speaker 4: if you're more interested in being pretty and all the
- 5:50Speaker 4: rest of it, you get sucked in.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Or you get too enamored with the fact.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Okay, they're missing safeties, so now we're going to attack.
- 5:59Speaker 4: We're going to attack those areas of the field. The
- 6:02Speaker 4: only thing the Bills really do well on defense is
- 6:04Speaker 4: the skui's coverage looks in the passing game, and to
- 6:09Speaker 4: allow them to do that and not have to commit
- 6:12Speaker 4: a safety to the line of scrimmage would be I
- 6:15Speaker 4: think that would be a bad move. And for the Broncos.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And I think if they get the running backs up
- 6:22Speaker 4: in you know, into the twenties, you know, get them
- 6:25Speaker 4: into the twenties, I think you're having a nice balanced
- 6:28Speaker 4: day where you're controlling the issue.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Like this is a follow up to the run game question,
- 6:32Speaker 5: because the West Coast offense in these these complex systems,
- 6:36Speaker 5: will go in with three calls. You'll have the lead call,
- 6:39Speaker 5: which could be a run, and then a can or
- 6:42Speaker 5: a kill, and then maybe an alert for an egregious look.
- 6:45Speaker 5: And a lot of the onus goes on the quarterback
- 6:47Speaker 5: position to get into the right call, and sometimes it's
- 6:50Speaker 5: get out of a said run. Do you do you
- 6:53Speaker 5: sense it all that there's any has been any any
- 6:57Speaker 5: part of that equation as it relates to bo Nicks,
- 7:00Speaker 5: that that Sean Payton hasn't been pleased with it with
- 7:02Speaker 5: the run game in particular. Do you think it's just
- 7:05Speaker 5: more just preference of throwing the football and throwing the
- 7:09Speaker 5: quick screen game from Sean Payton over potentially bo Nix's
- 7:12Speaker 5: involvement in checking the run game.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I think it's it's probably the latter. I think it's
- 7:18Speaker 4: Sean likes I mean, he he believes in switching out personnel,
- 7:25Speaker 4: you know, every play. He believes in moving around the
- 7:28Speaker 4: play card. You know, he doesn't you know, I've watched
- 7:31Speaker 4: play callers through the years, you know, just hammer away
- 7:34Speaker 4: with the same three plays because nobody stops him.
- 7:38Speaker 3: That that's not really in his vein.
- 7:40Speaker 4: You know, he doesn't really do that much, even when
- 7:43Speaker 4: things are going great. So I think a lot of
- 7:46Speaker 4: it is him. I think the other part of it,
- 7:48Speaker 4: Mike is I think they get in trouble sometimes because
- 7:52Speaker 4: they have the you know, the kill the killer can
- 7:56Speaker 4: call and then the alert calls when they don't get
- 7:59Speaker 4: bo to the line scrimmage quick enough, if they're too
- 8:02Speaker 4: slow in the huddle, if they're too slow switching the
- 8:05Speaker 4: personnel out. I think that's when things get frustrating for
- 8:09Speaker 4: Bowl and the offense because he can't get to all
- 8:12Speaker 4: of the things they'd like to get to, and they
- 8:15Speaker 4: end up snapping sometimes when they're not in the play
- 8:18Speaker 4: they want to be in, but there's two on the
- 8:21Speaker 4: play clock, and you just got to live with it.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah, this isn't a week for frustration and sideline squabbles,
- 8:26Speaker 1: that's for sure. Jeff Legwall to ESPN is presented by
- 8:30Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Start with a job, end with a career. Let's flip
- 8:37Speaker 1: to the other side. The matchup of this Broncos defense
- 8:40Speaker 1: against Joe Brady and josh Allen Leggy. If you had
- 8:44Speaker 1: to point to a single individual on this Broncos defense
- 8:49Speaker 1: and say he is the most important in this matchup,
- 8:53Speaker 1: who would you say it is?
- 8:56Speaker 4: It's kind of a toughie. I mean, I guess i'd
- 8:59Speaker 4: see what I'm here for, which is a cop out.
- 9:02Speaker 4: But I think Nick Benito Dre Greenlaw would be my composite.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 4: And the reason I say that is because you know
- 9:11Speaker 4: their only real chance on offense is to get the
- 9:14Speaker 4: Allen Cook combination going, and then they control down in
- 9:20Speaker 4: distance on you. You can't let them do that. But
- 9:23Speaker 4: you got to keep Allan where you can find him.
- 9:26Speaker 4: You got to keep him in the pocket, You got
- 9:28Speaker 4: to keep them from vertical escapes, you got to keep
- 9:31Speaker 4: him from off schedule. And I think it's very telling
- 9:34Speaker 4: that the two opponents who marry line of scrimmage, run
- 9:38Speaker 4: defense and coverage and rush the best that the Bills
- 9:44Speaker 4: have faced this year sacked Alan the most times. Houston
- 9:48Speaker 4: got him eight times, Philly got them five times, and
- 9:52Speaker 4: they all both of those defenses can control you in
- 9:57Speaker 4: the middle at the point of attack in the run game,
- 10:00Speaker 4: and they can keep your quarterback where they can find them.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And I think that's what the Broncos do well.
- 10:05Speaker 4: But they need high end days from everybody, because you know,
- 10:10Speaker 4: the trouble starts when Allen's off schedule and moving, and
- 10:16Speaker 4: if you let them have third and two s, third
- 10:20Speaker 4: and threes, third and ones, that's not where you want
- 10:22Speaker 4: to be with a team that can run the ball,
- 10:25Speaker 4: if you let them.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Real quickly, Leggie, what do you know about the Broncos
- 10:30Speaker 1: preparation for the tush push this week? And how much
- 10:33Speaker 1: focus they put into it and what they want to
- 10:35Speaker 1: do personnel wise there.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Well, I mean I think they're trying to make sure
- 10:40Speaker 4: they have the right personnel grouping. So I mean, I
- 10:42Speaker 4: think it's big that everyone is healthy and they have choices.
- 10:49Speaker 4: You know, there really isn't much strategic there. You just
- 10:53Speaker 4: have to find a way to keep those internal guys,
- 10:57Speaker 4: you know, make him have to go out to get
- 11:00Speaker 4: apps to find the to find the space.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Don't give them the gap.
- 11:04Speaker 4: You can't give them the a seven yard quarterback sneak
- 11:08Speaker 4: right over the the you know, the.
- 11:10Speaker 3: One, the a gap. You can't give him that one.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Uh.
- 11:14Speaker 3: You got to make him have to hunt, uh for
- 11:18Speaker 3: the gap.
- 11:18Speaker 4: So that that I think that's I think they want
- 11:22Speaker 4: to control that middle three area and and see if
- 11:26Speaker 4: you can just at least get a little stalemate going there.
- 11:30Speaker 3: So he has to churn a little bit leggy.
- 11:33Speaker 2: If you're a Bronco fanc you'd be you be concerned
- 11:36Speaker 2: that today's wind may stick through at least what I
- 11:40Speaker 2: guess Chris Pianki told the Midday Show the first half tomorrow, Well.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I guess i'd I'd say, well, then you should run
- 11:48Speaker 4: the ball more but that just beIN.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Did wonder would that mean it's going to be you know,
- 11:54Speaker 2: that'll help Sean stick to the game plan.
- 11:56Speaker 3: There, I will throw.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Out to you, you know, if we're in reading the
- 12:00Speaker 4: tea leaves business. We didn't talk the other the other
- 12:04Speaker 4: day after practice how excited he was that they had
- 12:06Speaker 4: thrown the ball so well in the wind.
- 12:08Speaker 3: So I'll just leave that with you. I don't like that.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I don't know that.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I like that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Hey, real quick, before we let you go. You know
- 12:18Speaker 2: every year you and I have done I don't know
- 12:20Speaker 2: countless because I've you've been joining my radio shows for
- 12:24Speaker 2: a decade and a half. Are you shocked by how
- 12:29Speaker 2: many coaches got let go in this cycle? Legy, we
- 12:31Speaker 2: always do this thing, but holy cow, what are we
- 12:33Speaker 2: up to?
- 12:34Speaker 3: Ten? Ten?
- 12:35Speaker 4: Ted gotten gotten too emotional, The whole process has gotten
- 12:40Speaker 4: to owners are too emotional. There's too much responding to
- 12:46Speaker 4: this social media whatever. But it's weird out there. I
- 12:50Speaker 4: mean a friend of mine, I covered the Steelers way back,
- 12:54Speaker 4: so I still know a lot of people there, and
- 12:57Speaker 4: he sent me some clips where people people are celebrating
- 13:01Speaker 4: on the radio that Tomlin has stepped down as coach.
- 13:06Speaker 4: A guy who never had a losing season in nineteen
- 13:09Speaker 4: years and won a Super Bowl.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Look, I grant you, he's lost.
- 13:14Speaker 4: You know that it's been many years since they've had
- 13:16Speaker 4: a playoff win. I got it, But he didn't have
- 13:19Speaker 4: a losing season for nineteen years, and people were saying,
- 13:24Speaker 4: it's the best day of my life as a fan.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Tomlin.
- 13:29Speaker 4: I mean it's it's become like people just want blood
- 13:33Speaker 4: and I don't think about I always tell people about
- 13:37Speaker 4: you know, I know in the business when they're frustrated
- 13:40Speaker 4: with their jobs and want to quit or walk out
- 13:43Speaker 4: or yell at the boss, and I say, well, your
- 13:46Speaker 4: first step is.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Tell me what you're going to do tomorrow.
- 13:50Speaker 4: And I would always ask a team, you can get
- 13:53Speaker 4: rid of a coach, but tell me what you're doing tomorrow.
- 13:56Speaker 4: I don't want to hear that you're you're putting the
- 13:59Speaker 4: search together after you fire the guy. You should have
- 14:02Speaker 4: a plan. And but the fact that Harbaugh and Tomlin
- 14:07Speaker 4: are out, I don't think Tomlin walks away if he
- 14:10Speaker 4: doesn't feel all of the angst around the team, And
- 14:16Speaker 4: I just think it's too emotional. There aren't ten qualified
- 14:19Speaker 4: candidates ready to be head coaches and you're just doing
- 14:23Speaker 4: this again in two years a lot of these teams.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Jeff Legwall the most qualified candidate. We talk to him
- 14:29Speaker 1: every Monday, every Friday on the Craigman and Lindahl Show.
- 14:32Speaker 1: We'll talk to him Monday after Broncos bills. Leggy, I'm
- 14:38Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna do the thing. I haven't done this
- 14:40Speaker 1: to you all year long, but I'm gonna do this.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Score this thing.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I don't want to score. I just I simply want
- 14:46Speaker 1: you to allude to are we talking about an AFC
- 14:51Speaker 1: championship or are we talking about the draft when you
- 14:53Speaker 1: join us on Monday.
- 14:55Speaker 4: I think this defense is good enough to talk about
- 14:59Speaker 4: an AFC champion.
- 15:00Speaker 1: There it is. Jeff Legwald ESPN dot com. Leggy thinks
- 15:04Speaker 1: so emotional.
- 15:05Speaker 5: He's just he said, he's just emotional. He's like all
- 15:07Speaker 5: these owners.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Clinical man, clinical. That's how my guy does it right. There,
- 15:11Speaker 1: won't be swayed by the winds in the slightest bit.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Jeff Legwalald with us there on a Friday afternoon
