- 0:00Chapter 40 from the book of Ezekiel this one with will not
- 0:04have a lot of my commentary in it but the I will read from the
- 0:09study Bible because I think the scripture kind of explains
- 0:13itself. So let's get started.
- 0:16Dear Lord please be with us and open our eyes and ears to hear
- 0:20what you have to say through Ezekiel about the the new
- 0:24temple. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:28So this is talking about the temple area restored in the 25th
- 0:34year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the
- 0:3710th of the month, in the 14th year after the fall of the city.
- 0:43On that very day the hand of the Lord was on me, and he took me
- 0:47there in visions of God. He took me to the land of Israel
- 0:52and set me on a very high mountain on whose South side
- 0:57were some buildings that look like a city.
- 0:59He took me there and I saw a man whose appearance was like
- 1:04bronze. He was standing in the gateway
- 1:06with a linen cord and a measuring rod in his hand.
- 1:09The man said to me, Son of man, look carefully and listen
- 1:13closely and pay attention to everything I'm going to show you
- 1:17for that is why you have been brought here.
- 1:20So when Ezekiel gets this vision, he is told during this
- 1:25vision, pay attention to all of this.
- 1:28And there's good reason for that because if you don't know this
- 1:32already, there is a group, an organization over in Israel
- 1:36called the Temple Institute. They actually have blueprints
- 1:41for this temple and they actually have the articles that
- 1:48will go inside the temple. They've been accumulating these
- 1:51for I don't know how many years now.
- 1:53So everything is ready to go for this third temple to someday be
- 2:00built. The architectural plans and
- 2:02everything. And when I first read this and
- 2:05was trying to understand I, you know, because this was, oh gosh,
- 2:10what 570 something BC. And so I was wondering, OK, is
- 2:17this vision about the second temple and or is it, you know,
- 2:21it wasn't or is the first temple?
- 2:23I was, I was just like trying to figure out what Ezekiel was
- 2:27talking about. And so I compared the sizes and
- 2:31the measurements and the information that are given in
- 2:33the Bible about the different temples.
- 2:36Because there was a first temple and a second temple.
- 2:39And this is describing 1/3 temple and its size does not
- 2:44match up with the first or the second temple.
- 2:47So this is 1/3 temple. So when people say there's not
- 2:51going to be a third temple or we don't need it, whether or not we
- 2:55think we need it, God has planned for it and God's word
- 3:00will remain. There will be a third temple.
- 3:03When that happens, we don't know.
- 3:05We'll have to wait and see. But that's the significance of
- 3:09this, like I guess because God gave Ezekiel such detailed
- 3:13measurements of everything that so that it could be built and
- 3:19every single word that God has given will happen.
- 3:23So this chapter begins the third temple.
- 3:27OK, in visions, God, in visions of God, He took me to the land
- 3:31of Israel and set me on a very high mountain on whose South
- 3:35side were some buildings that looked like a city.
- 3:38He took me there and I saw a man whose appearance was like
- 3:42bronze. He was standing in the gateway
- 3:43with a linen cord and measuring and a measuring rod in his hand.
- 3:47The man said to me, Son, a man, look carefully and listen
- 3:50closely and pay attention to everything I'm going to show
- 3:53you, for that is why you have been brought here.
- 3:56Tell the people of Israel everything you see.
- 4:00The Eastgate to the outer court. I saw a wall completely
- 4:05surrounding the temple area. The length of the measuring rod
- 4:09in the man's hand was 6 cubits long, each of which was a cubit
- 4:16and a hand. Breadth he measured the wall it
- 4:19was 1 measuring rod thick and one rod high.
- 4:24Now before I get into the detail, I'm reading from an NIV
- 4:27translation and in Amir's book Exploring Ezekiel he gives a
- 4:33great solution for this. I have a study Bible which does
- 4:36translate these measurements for me so I can see what they are in
- 4:41terminology that I understand. Like feet.
- 4:43You know, how many feet is all of this, But if you want to not
- 4:48have to go back and forth and figure out, well, what does this
- 4:50mean? What does a cubit mean?
- 4:52And it does get confusing. If you like Amir suggested, go
- 4:57to the NLT, the new living translation of the Bible.
- 5:02A lot of people don't like that. But here's the good thing about
- 5:05it is that it gives you those translations in readable format.
- 5:10So you can read through the new Living Translation and see what
- 5:14these measurements are that are familiar to us, and then you can
- 5:18get an idea or an understanding of the grandeur of this huge
- 5:22temple that Ezekiel seeing. But I'm just going to forsake of
- 5:26time. Read through what it says here
- 5:29in the NIV. And then I think I'll read
- 5:31Amir's from Amir's book because he has a lot of good commentary
- 5:35about that and also the Study Bible.
- 5:37So let's keep going. Then he went to the Eastgate.
- 5:40He climbed its steps and measured the threshold of the
- 5:43gate. It was 1 rod deep.
- 5:45The alcoves for the guards were one rod long and one rod wide,
- 5:49and the projecting walls between the alcoves were five cubits
- 5:53thick. And the threshold of the gate
- 5:54next to the portico facing the temple was one rod deep.
- 5:58Then he measured the portico of the gateway.
- 6:00It was 8 cubits deep and its jams were two cubits thick.
- 6:05The portico of the gateway faced the temple.
- 6:09Inside the Eastgate. There were three alcoves on each
- 6:13side. The three had the same
- 6:15measurements, and the faces of the projecting walls on each
- 6:18side had the same measurements. Then he measured the width of
- 6:21the entrance of the gateway. It was 10 cubits and the length
- 6:25was 13 cubits. In front of each alcove was a
- 6:28wall one cubit high, and the alcoves were six cubits square.
- 6:32So now God going through or this vision giving all of these
- 6:36dimensions, why do you think he did it?
- 6:38He did it so that that people, I mean, it seems obvious to me
- 6:42that he did this so people could actually create blueprints and
- 6:45actually build this like have the information which the Temple
- 6:49Institute has done. OK.
- 6:52Then he measured the gateway from the tops of the rear wall
- 6:56of one alcove to the top of the opposite one.
- 6:58The distance was 25 cubits from one parapet opening to the
- 7:02opposite 1. He measured along the faces of
- 7:04the projecting walls all around the inside of the gateway. 60
- 7:08cubits. The measurement was up to the
- 7:11portico facing the courtyard. The distance from the entrance
- 7:14of the gateway to the far end of its portico was 50 cubits.
- 7:18The alcoves and the projecting walls inside the gateway were
- 7:21surmounted by narrow parapet openings all around, as was the
- 7:26portico. The openings all around faced
- 7:28inward. The faces of the projecting
- 7:30walls were decorated with palm trees.
- 7:33The outer court. Then he took me into the outer
- 7:36court. There I saw some rooms and
- 7:39pavement that had been constructed all around the
- 7:43court. There were 30 rooms along the
- 7:47pavement. It abutted the sides of the
- 7:49gateways and was as wide as they were long.
- 7:52This was the lower pavement. Then he measured the distance
- 7:56from the inside of the lower gateway to the outside of the
- 7:59inner inner court. It was 100 cubits on the east
- 8:02side as well as on the north, the Northgate.
- 8:06Then he measured the length and width of the Northgate leading
- 8:09into the outer leading into the outer court.
- 8:13It's alcoves 3 on each side, it's projecting walls and it's
- 8:16portico had the same measurements as those of the
- 8:19first gateway. It was 50 cubits long and 25
- 8:22cubits wide. Its openings as portico and it's
- 8:25palm tree decorations had the same measurements as those of
- 8:29the gate facing east. 7 steps led up to it with its portico
- 8:37opposite them. There was a gate to the inner
- 8:39court facing the Northgate, just as there was on the east.
- 8:42He measured from one gate to the opposite gate.
- 8:45It was 100 cubits, the South gate.
- 8:47Then he led me to the South side and I saw the South gate.
- 8:50He measured its jams and his portico and they had the same
- 8:53measurements as the others. The gateway and its portico had
- 8:57narrow openings all around it like the openings of the others.
- 9:00It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide. 7 steps LED up to
- 9:06it with a portico opposite them. It had palm tree decorations on
- 9:09the faces of the projecting walls on each side.
- 9:12The inner court also had a gate facing South and he measured
- 9:16from this gate to the outer gate on the South side.
- 9:19It was 100 cubits, the gates to the inner court.
- 9:23Then he brought me into the inner court through the South
- 9:26gate and he measured the South gate.
- 9:28It had the same measurement as the others, it's alcoves, it's
- 9:31projecting walls, it's portico had the same measurements as the
- 9:35others. The gateway and it's portico had
- 9:38openings all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25
- 9:42cubits wide. The porticoes of the gateways
- 9:45around the inner court were 25 cubits wide and five cubits
- 9:49deep. It's portico faced the outer
- 9:51court. Palm trees decorated jams and
- 9:54eight steps LED up to it. Then he brought me to the inner
- 9:58court on the east side and he measured the gateway.
- 10:02It had the same measurements as the others.
- 10:05It's alcoves, it's projecting walls and it's portico had the
- 10:08same measurements as the others. The gateway and it's portico had
- 10:11openings all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25
- 10:15cubits wide. It's portico faced the outer
- 10:17court. Palm trees decorated the jams on
- 10:20either sides and eight steps LED up to it.
- 10:24Then he brought me to the Northgate and measured it.
- 10:27It had the same measurements as the others, as did its alcoves,
- 10:31it's projecting walls and it's portico.
- 10:33And it had openings all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25
- 10:37cubits wide. It's portico face the outer
- 10:40court. Palm trees decorated the jams on
- 10:43either side and eight steps LED up to it the rooms for preparing
- 10:48sacrifices. Yes, there will be sacrifices
- 10:52and we don't really know why, but God has a plan for this.
- 10:57So verse 38, A room with a doorway was by the portico in
- 11:02each of the inner gateways where the burnt offerings were washed.
- 11:05In the portico of the gateway were two tables on each side on
- 11:09which the burnt offerings, sin offerings and guilt offerings
- 11:14were slaughtered. By the outside wall of the
- 11:17portico of the gateway, near the steps at the entrance of the
- 11:21north gateway were two tables, and on the other side of the
- 11:25steps were two tables. So there were 4 tables on one
- 11:28side of the gateway and 4:00 on the other, 8 tables in all, on
- 11:33which the sacrifices were slaughtered.
- 11:36There were also 4 tables of dressed stone for the burnt
- 11:41offerings, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half
- 11:45wide and a cubit high. On them were placed the utensils
- 11:50for slaughtering the burnt offerings and the other
- 11:53sacrifices and double pronged hooks, each a hand breath long,
- 11:58were attached to the wall. All around the tables were for
- 12:02the flesh of the offerings, the rooms for the priest outside the
- 12:07inner gate. Within the inner court were two
- 12:10rooms, one at the Northgate and facing South and another at the
- 12:16at the side of the South gate and facing north.
- 12:19He said to me, the room facing S is for the priest who guard the
- 12:26temple, and the room facing north is for the priest who
- 12:30guard the altar. These are the sons of Zadok who
- 12:35were the only Levites who may draw near to the Lord to
- 12:40minister before him. That's important.
- 12:44So the Levites were the only ones who were permitted to carry
- 12:48the Ark of the Covenant. And this is saying these are the
- 12:53sons of Zadok. Zadok was a priest who are the
- 12:56only Levites who may draw near to the Lord to minister before
- 13:01him. Now God makes the rules.
- 13:03I don't, you know, know why, but maybe if we study this more, if
- 13:08I knew more, I could explain that, but right now I can't.
- 13:11Then he measured the court. It was square, 100 cubits long
- 13:14and 100 cubits wide and the altar was in front of the
- 13:18temple. The new temple.
- 13:20He brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the jams
- 13:23of the portico. There were five cubits wide on
- 13:26either side. The width of the entrance was 14
- 13:29cubits and it's projecting walls were There were three cubits
- 13:33wide on either side. The portico was 20 cubits wide
- 13:38and 12 cubits from front to back.
- 13:40It was reached by a flight of stairs, and there were pillars
- 13:44on each side of the jams. So that's the end of chapter 40.
- 13:49So I'm going to stop there and just read through the questions
- 13:52and answers of the Study Bible, and then we'll read a little bit
- 13:55of Amir's book too. So why is the city nameless?
- 14:00We can't be sure. Some suggest no name was
- 14:02necessary because the description left no doubt that
- 14:06the city was Jerusalem. Others think it may be simply a
- 14:11matter of style, perhaps implying that mentioning the
- 14:14name of Jerusalem would only add to the despair of the Exiles.
- 14:18This is in the first. I don't know why it says I'll
- 14:23read that again. Just so it's clear what this
- 14:25question is saying. In the 25th year of our exile,
- 14:29at the beginning of the year, on the 10th of the month, in the
- 14:3114th year after the fall of the city, and on the very day the
- 14:37hand of the Lord was on me and took me there.
- 14:39Yeah. I when it says the city, yeah.
- 14:41I think everybody would probably know the fall of the city they
- 14:44just got. They were just exiled from
- 14:46Jerusalem. So if it was talking about the
- 14:49fall of the city, I think that's there wouldn't be really any
- 14:53question about where it was. So anyway, who was this man
- 14:58whose appearance was like bronze?
- 15:00Some think this man was an Angel similar to the one who
- 15:04interpreted Zechariah's visions in Zechariah chapter 1 and 2,
- 15:08and the one who interpreted the Apostle John's vision in
- 15:13Revelation 17. Others think it's better to see
- 15:16him as the Angel of the Lord, since later he is called the
- 15:21Lord in Ezekiel 40 chapter 44. The Angel of the Lord appears
- 15:28throughout the Old Testament and is sometimes called the Lord
- 15:32himself in Genesis 16 verses 7 through 13.
- 15:38So why measure a vision? Even though this was a vision,
- 15:42The details of the temple are significant.
- 15:45Visions do seem otherworldly, but it is good to remember that
- 15:50most visions within prophetic literature have to do with very
- 15:54earthly and material things or people.
- 15:58Why provide such detail about the various parts of the temple?
- 16:01Some say that Ezekiel was recalling the details of the
- 16:04temple he had known before being taken to captive to Babylon.
- 16:08Others say he had a vivid picture of the temple that was
- 16:12to be rebuilt once the Exiles returned to Jerusalem.
- 16:16Either way, the precise measurements and concrete
- 16:19details served to under score that Ezekiel's vision was
- 16:22something real. This was not abstract concept.
- 16:25His prophecy, whether literal or figuratively or figurative would
- 16:29be fulfilled. Well, I just to let you know, I
- 16:33have a background, I studied architecture.
- 16:35I have a degree in architecture. So this was this is what I did
- 16:39when I came to this chapter when I was trying to figure out about
- 16:44what temple is he describing. And I started comparing and from
- 16:49my background and using the measurements in the
- 16:52translations, I have confirmed that this does not match up with
- 16:58the first temple or the second temple.
- 17:01So you can check it yourself if you don't believe me.
- 17:04OK. Do the palm tree decorations
- 17:06have any significance? Palm tree carvings have been
- 17:09found in various archaeological remains from the Iron Age,
- 17:13though we do not know their significance.
- 17:15What is significant is that Solomon's temple had palm
- 17:19carvings as well. Why were there seven steps in
- 17:23some places and eight steps in others?
- 17:26This is what I was thinking too. It's not entirely clear. 7 was
- 17:30typically used as a symbol of completion or perfection.
- 17:34It may be that seven steps were used to remind the people of the
- 17:37need for holiness when entering the temple precincts.
- 17:41Then to enter the inner court. 8 steps may have been used to
- 17:45raise the inner Court One step higher above the outer court, a
- 17:49tangible sign that priest climbing the steps were
- 17:51approaching the presence of God. Note that the Temple itself was
- 17:55reached from the inner court by a flight of stairs, perhaps 10
- 18:00steps. Ezekiel 40.
- 18:03Some have pointed out that in later times there were 15 steps
- 18:07that led from the court of the women to the court of Israel.
- 18:11On those steps the Levites would stand and chant the 15 psalms
- 18:15that are called the Song of Sense.
- 18:18Now this answer question and answer just got confusing
- 18:21because it started throwing out all of these number of stairs.
- 18:25It says like some have pointed out that in later times there
- 18:28were 15 steps 7 + 8 that led from the court.
- 18:35It's, this is probably, I mean, I'm, I'm sure because of the way
- 18:41the rest of the Bible is written that there is symbolism in this.
- 18:45And if we pray about it and study it, we, the symbolism may
- 18:49be revealed to us. Right off the top of my head,
- 18:53what I think about when I see 7 and I see eight, I think about
- 18:58like God's ultimate plan for humanity is, is that humanity
- 19:04has 6000 years. The number of man is 6.
- 19:08There are 6000 years for mankind to complete in the 7th year or
- 19:14the 7th the the 7000 you know from 6000 to 7000 that's the
- 19:20reign of Christ when Christ will be here present on earth.
- 19:24So Jesus is the Sabbath, the 7th day to God.
- 19:30A day is like 1000 years and 1000 years like a day.
- 19:34So if humankind has of mankind has up to the year 6000 and then
- 19:41at the year 6000, Jesus returns and reigns up until 7000, we
- 19:48know from scripture that after that point he turns everything
- 19:52back over to the Father and that's eternity.
- 19:56So maybe it's the steps of mankind.
- 19:59You know, we start out like in the 7th.
- 20:04The seven steps represent Jesus and then the 8th it goes to the
- 20:07throne of God. It keeps getting higher, closer
- 20:09to God, closer to humanity's existence with God present.
- 20:16That's what I believe and that's just my interpretation of this.
- 20:21So not saying I'm right or wrong, but that's just what came
- 20:25to mind. So here's what it says.
- 20:28What temple is this? OK, I I haven't read this yet,
- 20:32so I'm reading it for the all right now.
- 20:35People disagree about the significance of these chapters.
- 20:37Some insist that this is a description of Solomon's temple.
- 20:41Well, I disagree with that because I did compare it.
- 20:44There are, however, a number of important differences between
- 20:47this temple and Solomons. Consequently, others suggest
- 20:50that these plans, that these are plans for a temple Ezekiel
- 20:55intended the Exiles to build when they returned to Jerusalem.
- 20:59Still others say that since Ezekiel was a prophet, not an
- 21:03architect, these chapters would be interpreted in a symbolic
- 21:07manner. Those holding this view see
- 21:09these chapters fully fulfilled figuratively in the church or in
- 21:17a future messianic age. In the former case, the temple
- 21:21predicts the blessings that God has for the church.
- 21:24In the latter case, the perfect symmetry of this temple
- 21:27expresses symbolically the perfection of God's plan for his
- 21:31restored people. And there are still others who
- 21:34expect a future literal fulfillment of the prophecy when
- 21:37Christ returns to set up his messianic Kingdom.
- 21:41Some object to this interpretation, saying that to
- 21:45reinstitute Old Testament sacrifices seems contrary to the
- 21:49New Testament Hebrews 10. Those who look for the literal
- 21:54temple in the Messianic Age, however, see its ceremony simply
- 21:57as memorials of the Messiah's death, burial, and resurrection.
- 22:01So there are a lot of questions obviously about this, and as in
- 22:07the past part of the Bible that I've read through that God often
- 22:13has both a literal and a symbolic significance of the
- 22:18words and the prophecy that he had that has been written.
- 22:22We see proof of that from the past books that we read through
- 22:26that there are often literal events that happen, but they
- 22:31have symbolic meaning and only God could make that happen.
- 22:36It's another example of his sovereignty.
- 22:39And while we may not see it, just like think about this, the
- 22:43Passover and it's symbolism and it's pointing to Jesus, the,
- 22:48the, the, you know, the last sacrifice that was needed on the
- 22:52cross for all of mankind. Now, when we get into a little
- 22:56bit more detail, it's going to talk about the Prince and the
- 22:58Lord. And this is really interesting
- 23:01and I will talk about, I'll comment on that later.
- 23:04But I think Jesus is going to be present.
- 23:06I think King David is going to be present.
- 23:09And I think this is going to be in the Millennium.
- 23:12And I'll give you the evidence when we get to that part of
- 23:14Scripture. But it's very fascinating
- 23:16because I, I believe it's proof that this is going to this, this
- 23:22will come. And this is kind of exciting
- 23:25because there's going to be this new temple, like the sacrifices
- 23:30part. I don't really know why that
- 23:33continues. I don't really know, unless it's
- 23:37like a learning process for the Jewish people to put together
- 23:43The Who Jesus is and to make the connection that's been present
- 23:50all the way back into the early books of the Bible, the Old
- 23:55Testament, and the Jewish books, and for them to actually make
- 24:00the connection. But I don't know.
- 24:02And God does have a plan, though.
- 24:06So were these real palm trees? No, like the 200 pomegranates
- 24:10Solomon had carved on the cap capitals at each temple pillar.
- 24:16First Kings 7 is where you can find that these palm trees were
- 24:20carved. Decoration details given later
- 24:24show that palm trees were also carved on the upper part of the
- 24:27walls all around the inner and outer sanctuary, alternating
- 24:33with carved cherubim. Ezekiel 41.
- 24:38What were these different offerings?
- 24:41Well, the grain sin and guilt, you have to go back to the Old
- 24:45Testament. I think it might be in an in
- 24:47Leviticus where it gives very specific types of offerings that
- 24:53were given four different reasons.
- 24:55But one thing that I did notice was that every one of the
- 24:58offerings that were made were for unintentional sin, not
- 25:04intentional sin, but unintentional accidental sin.
- 25:10So it's kind of interesting, but you can go back to Leviticus to
- 25:12look that up. OK, so were these the same rules
- 25:17given before the exile? And this is referring to verse
- 25:2146. Let me read that one.
- 25:26And the man and the room facing the north is for the priest who
- 25:29guard the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, who
- 25:32are the only Levites who may draw near to the Lord to
- 25:36minister him. So it says yes and no.
- 25:38During the time of Solomon, the priest who descended from Zadok
- 25:42served in the temple along with the Levites.
- 25:45However, for some time before the fall of the temple, the
- 25:49descendants of Zadok had no longer served as priest.
- 25:54In the new temple, the priestly descendants of Zadok and the
- 25:57Levites would be fully restored to temple service.
- 26:01That's interesting because again, the Millennium period is
- 26:05a time of restoration of the earth, of the cleansing of the
- 26:09earth. There's a lot of things that
- 26:10happened during that time. The restoration of of people,
- 26:15the restoration of long lifespans will happen when Jesus
- 26:19returns. A lot of people are looking to
- 26:22what they can do to remain young, to extend their life.
- 26:27They're looking to worldly ways. However, when Jesus returns,
- 26:31that's going to happen because God is good.
- 26:34So just hold on. When Jesus returns, this is all
- 26:37going to be, you know, the stuff that we're worried about right
- 26:40now are concerned about aging or whatever.
- 26:43Don't worry about it because it's not going to matter in the
- 26:46big picture. So who was Zadok?
- 26:48Zadok was a priest during the reigns of David and Solomon.
- 26:52God chose Zadok to minister in the temple when Abiathar was
- 26:58removed as priest for supporting Adonijah rather than Solomon as
- 27:04David's successor, and you can find that in First Kings 1
- 27:10verses 7 through 8 and chapter 2 verses 26 through 27.
- 27:15So that's the end of my study Bibles, questions and answers.
- 27:19And I will read a little bit from Amir's book Exploring
- 27:24Ezekiel. Like I've said before, it's
- 27:25worth worth buying because there's a lot of good insight in
- 27:29here. So anyway, I will read his
- 27:33commentary because it's kind of funny the way he writes.
- 27:35I mean, it's an easy read. So this is measuring the temple
- 27:39and it's referring to chapters 40 through 42.
- 27:42So we only covered chapter 40, but this will cover subsequent
- 27:46chapters. So here's what Amir says, Amir
- 27:50Sarfati and his last name is TSARFATI and it's with Doctor
- 27:56Rick Yon YOHN and the book is called Exploring Ezekiel.
- 28:01You can buy it on Amazon if you would like.
- 28:04OK, uh, Amir, is there any chance we can skip the next few
- 28:09chapters? It it's all just Ezekiel and a
- 28:13guy with a stick measuring a new temple, can't we just say that
- 28:15the rebuilt worship center is really big?
- 28:18Then move on. Trust me, I understand where you
- 28:21are coming from. On the surface, these chapters
- 28:23look like a guaranteed snooze fest.
- 28:26But remember, God put them in here for a loftier reason than
- 28:30simply allowing us to skim through one day's Bible reading
- 28:33in record time. Besides, you might find yourself
- 28:37a lot more interested than you expect.
- 28:39So drop a double caffeine capsule into your Nespresso
- 28:43machine and let's get down to business.
- 28:46The year was 573 BC, 14 years after Jerusalem fell.
- 28:52The prophet was in his 40s and had been a widow for more than a
- 28:56decade, and 1/2. His life in the interval was
- 29:00somewhat of a mystery. What was his daily routine?
- 29:03Was he still prophesying regularly?
- 29:05Had he taken up his role as priest?
- 29:08Or was he still a lonely hermit who occasionally stepped outside
- 29:12to tell people to straighten up their acts?
- 29:15Whatever Ezekiel day-to-day look like, God chose an opportune
- 29:19time to interrupt it. Suddenly he was taken up and
- 29:23carried to a high mountain overlooking Jerusalem.
- 29:26The city below him, however, was not the Jerusalem he remembered
- 29:30from before he was stolen away. It was also not the series of
- 29:36runes he he knew currently inhabited.
- 29:40The site spread out in front of Ezekiel was a beautifully
- 29:44rebuilt city with a huge temple complex.
- 29:48A throat cleared next to him and he turned to see a bronze
- 29:51looking man prepared to get to measure the enormous holy site.
- 29:57Before the man began his task he gave Ezekiel a charge saying,
- 30:01Son of Man, look with your eyes and hear with your ears and fix
- 30:04your mind on everything I show you, for you were brought here
- 30:08so that I might show them to you.
- 30:09Declare to the House of Israel everything you see.
- 30:13Watch, listen, learn, pass it on.
- 30:16After his 20 plus years of prophesying, that was one series
- 30:21of tasks he had down pat. Hey, OK, so then it talks about
- 30:27the measuring beginning. I won't read that again.
- 30:30Hey, I see the glaze already passing across your eyes, but
- 30:33don't. Don't feel bad.
- 30:35Nobody else has any idea what a cubit is either.
- 30:39Even Old Testament theologians refill their coffee mugs at this
- 30:43point and think, oy, this is going to be a grind.
- 30:46Measurements and scriptural can be difficult.
- 30:48No one knows any more what a hen or an ephah or a talent was.
- 30:54When Ezekiel talks about a six cubit long ride, he may be
- 30:58talking about something massive or something incredibly small.
- 31:03Only a certified master in cubatology would know.
- 31:07I'm going to let you in to a mirror's little cheat code for
- 31:12cubiting on your phone or computer.
- 31:15Do a search for www.biblegateway.com.
- 31:22Once they're on the version menu to the right, select New Living
- 31:27Translation in parentheses NLT. Then type in a search for
- 31:34Ezekiel 40. Voila, suddenly the math is all
- 31:38done for you. Now the passage reads and I'll
- 31:41give you an example. I could see a wall completely
- 31:44surrounding the temple. The man took a measuring rod
- 31:47that was 10 1/2 feet long and measured the wall, and the wall
- 31:51was 10 1/2 feet thick and 10 1/2 feet 5.
- 31:55That's verse 5. If you aren't a fan of biblical
- 32:00paraphrases, no problem. Just read from whatever version
- 32:03you'd normally use and keep the NLT open for reference.
- 32:06It's so much easier to picture a square courtyard with sides of
- 32:10175 feet then compared to 100 cubits.
- 32:16By the way, this interpretation hack works for most other units
- 32:20of measure too. The the survey began at the
- 32:24eastern gate, which was significant because that was the
- 32:27one used when the glory of the Lord Lord departed from the
- 32:31temple. It is likely the gate that Jesus
- 32:35entered on on Palm Sunday as He rode in westward from the Mount
- 32:40of Olives. The eastern gate is also the
- 32:44passage that the glory of the Lord will use when He returns in
- 32:49Ezekiel chapter 43. The whole section presents a
- 32:53dilemma. Just how deep do we go when it
- 32:55comes to the measurements? My philosophy in this book, as
- 32:59it was in revealing revelation or discovering Daniel, is to
- 33:04familiarize the reader with a part of the Bible that is often
- 33:07a black hole to the everyday Christian.
- 33:10Therefore, I purposely don't get too far down into the weeds.
- 33:14In other words, we get deep, but we don't get commentary deep.
- 33:18Because of that, I'm going to let Ezekiel and his companion
- 33:22take their measurements and I'll offer some opportunities in this
- 33:25book's workbook for you to dig a little bit further down should
- 33:30you desire. So there are two reasons given
- 33:33to Ezekiel for taking these measurements #1 the shame of
- 33:37Israel. When this prophecy came to
- 33:39Ezekiel, there was no temple in Jerusalem that but there would
- 33:43there would be soon. Sadly, it would be pale in
- 33:46comparison to the First Temples glory when the foundations for
- 33:50the post exelic temple people had been laid by the returnees.
- 33:54All of the younger folk folk cheered for their progress, but
- 33:57for the older ones who had seen Solomon structure, it was a time
- 34:00of mourning. And that's talked about in the
- 34:04book of Ezra chapter 3. Once the words of Ezekiel's
- 34:08prophecy were heard, there would be even more shame.
- 34:11Not only was there simple second temple going to be overshadowed
- 34:15by the 1st, but it would be downright embarrassing when
- 34:18compared to the Temple of the Millennium, the one that Ezekiel
- 34:22was describing. Ezekiel was to first give the
- 34:26people the basic outline of the temple that was to come.
- 34:30The result would likely be shame and regret when they compared
- 34:33its future grandeur to what stood in front of them.
- 34:37But God didn't want to leave them down in the dumps.
- 34:39These men were trying to get things right with God.
- 34:41Yes, they were paying a heavy price and the diminutive new
- 34:45temple was evident. But time would come when a
- 34:49massive, majestic new temple would be built with all the
- 34:52beauty and intricacies intricacies involved in such a
- 34:58place of worship. A city that had a temple like
- 35:02that had to be a great city indeed.
- 35:04The people would be encouraged by the fact that a time was
- 35:06coming when Jerusalem would once again be fully rebuilt and
- 35:10respected amongst the nations. Reason #2 The holiness of God.
- 35:16The future Temple and its grounds were laid out in such a
- 35:18way as to communicate the holiness of the Lord.
- 35:21The Temple itself was extremely large, 875 feet by 875 feet.
- 35:29Surrounding the temple grounds would be a beautifully tended
- 35:33open area of 87.5 feet, stretching out on all sides.
- 35:39And there's more. A sacred area will be created
- 35:44within which the temple will sit, like a city inside a city.
- 35:49This piece of land will be 8 and a third miles long and six and
- 35:552/3 miles wide. The entire area will be holy and
- 36:02you can find that in the NLT version chapter 45, verse one.
- 36:07This piece of land will also be divided in half by width.
- 36:14Here's what it says. Within the larger sacred area,
- 36:19measure out a portion of land 8 and a third miles long and three
- 36:23and a third miles wide. Within it, the sanctuary of the
- 36:26Most Holy Place will be located. This area will be holy set aside
- 36:32for priests who minister to the Lord in the sanctuary.
- 36:36They will use it for their homes.
- 36:39And my temple will be located within it.
- 36:41The strip of sacred land next to it, also eight and a third miles
- 36:45long and three and a third miles wide, will be a living area for
- 36:50the Levites who work at the temple.
- 36:53It will be their possession and a place for their towns.
- 36:57In 1/2 of the sacred area will sit the temple, surrounded by
- 37:01the dwellings of its priest. The other half is full of
- 37:04Levites who also work at the temple, carrying out all the
- 37:07holy tasks that don't involve actual worship.
- 37:11The word holy means to be set apart.
- 37:13The enormous temple complex will be a visual for all that God,
- 37:18for all that God isn't just another guy living in a single
- 37:23story ranch at the end of the cul-de-sac.
- 37:26He is the Creator of all things, Almighty of the universe, and
- 37:31His house will show it. Not only will the grandeur of
- 37:35the building communicate His glory, but the grounds
- 37:39themselves will ensure that everyone around the world
- 37:43understands His otherness. And that is His commentary.
- 37:47Amir's commentary on chapters 40 through 42.
- 37:52We just completed chapter 40 from the Bible and the next
- 37:56recording. We will move on from there.
- 37:59So this wraps up chapter 40 from the Book of Ezekiel.
