- 0:00Speaker 1: Live from Washington, DC. This is the Kenny Report.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Thanks for joining me again live, coming to you live
- 0:09Speaker 2: from a bitterly cold American capital here in Washington, d C.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Thanks so much for joining me.
- 0:15Speaker 2: This the first day, the first full day of Donald
- 0:18Speaker 2: Trump's second term. Did the sky fall in? Of course
- 0:22Speaker 2: it didn't. But the lefties are still losing it. And
- 0:25Speaker 2: of course the American President did get up to some
- 0:27Speaker 2: of his Trumpian ways. He held another press conference today.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It was only an hour and twenty minutes or so late.
- 0:35Speaker 2: He called it to announce billions of dollars of investment
- 0:38Speaker 2: by private companies in artificial intelligence data centers that of
- 0:42Speaker 2: course require so much electricity they're need going to need
- 0:46Speaker 2: to quickly build additional generating capital capacity. This is something
- 0:52Speaker 2: that's very important for Australia. This is a lesson that's
- 0:54Speaker 2: crucial to the Australian energy debate. Donald Trump knows that
- 0:59Speaker 2: the increase prices of electricity are fueling inflation, and he
- 1:04Speaker 2: also knows that affordable, reliable energy is absolutely fundamental to
- 1:10Speaker 2: underpin economic development, prosperity, innovation into the future.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So this is something we need to learn here.
- 1:17Speaker 2: But as usual, a Trump presser can go anywhere, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: this one today did. And the President was asked about TikTok,
- 1:26Speaker 2: the social media platform that has now been given the
- 1:28Speaker 2: opportunity of a new lease of life under his presidency.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Are you a buying TikTok?
- 1:35Speaker 4: I would be if he wanted to buy it.
- 1:39Speaker 5: I'd like Lari to buy it too.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I have the right to make a deal.
- 1:45Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I've got to say, I do not like this bromance
- 1:48Speaker 2: between Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
- 1:51Speaker 1: The most powerful man in the country shouldn't.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Be constantly sharing the stage and an agenda with the
- 1:57Speaker 2: richest businessman in the country. I do have a feeling
- 2:01Speaker 2: that this could all end in tears. But has the nation?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Has America changed today? Has anything happened? Well, yes, quite dramatically.
- 2:09Speaker 2: There have been desperate changes on the Mexican border and
- 2:13Speaker 2: reports of a steep decline in.
- 2:16Speaker 1: The inflow of illegal immigrants.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Also, illegal immigrants in the country have been denied access
- 2:22Speaker 2: to certain processes, and the border boss says there are
- 2:26Speaker 2: moves of foot already on the streets to deport criminal illegals.
- 2:30Speaker 2: That's begun with officers searching for them around the nation.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Here he is, who are the people that you're targeting,
- 2:37Speaker 6: at least in this initial fans right, are the gays.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Public safety threats of those who are in a country
- 2:42Speaker 3: legaly that's been convicted arrested for a serious crime. But
- 2:46Speaker 3: let me be clear, there's not only public safety threats
- 2:48Speaker 3: that will be arrested. Because of sanctuary cities. We're not
- 2:51Speaker 3: allowed to get that public safety threat into jail, which
- 2:54Speaker 3: means we go to the neighborhood and find him, and
- 2:56Speaker 3: when we find him, he may be with others. And
- 2:59Speaker 3: unlike the lastministration, we're not going to tell ourse officers
- 3:02Speaker 3: not to arrest in new legalantans, so if they find others,
- 3:04Speaker 3: they'll be arrested.
- 3:06Speaker 2: This is another issue we understand all too well in Australia,
- 3:10Speaker 2: isn't it. I mean, secure borders are fundamental to national sovereignty.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You cannot protect your citizens, protect your country. You can't
- 3:17Speaker 2: be a sovereign nation without secure borders. I thought we'd
- 3:20Speaker 2: had this argument, the practical arguments around this. It's one
- 3:24Speaker 2: of practicalities. It is one of security and sovereign rights,
- 3:29Speaker 2: not one of morality. But someone forgot to tell the
- 3:33Speaker 2: pastor speaking at the first service for the newly inaugurated
- 3:37Speaker 2: President at the National Cathedral today.
- 3:41Speaker 4: In the name of our God, I ask you to
- 3:46Speaker 4: have mercy upon the people in our country. We're scared now.
- 3:53Speaker 4: There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican
- 4:00Speaker 4: and independent families, some who fear for their lives. And
- 4:07Speaker 4: the people the people who pick our crops and clean
- 4:12Speaker 4: our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants,
- 4:16Speaker 4: who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants, and
- 4:19Speaker 4: work the night shifts in hospitals. They may not be
- 4:23Speaker 4: citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority
- 4:29Speaker 4: of immigrants are not criminals.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Just extraordinary virtue signaling, wasn't it to agree? I kind
- 4:38Speaker 2: of admire her courage saying this stuff directly to return
- 4:42Speaker 2: to President's face.
- 4:43Speaker 1: But the idiocy of it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: The lack of comprehension, and the sanctimony, was just breathtaking.
- 4:51Speaker 2: The left just don't seem to be getting it in
- 4:54Speaker 2: this country. They haven't learned any lessons. It's all about
- 4:58Speaker 2: denying what's going on and demonizing Trump.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Have a look at this excerpt.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Here are some media commentators who are absolutely in denial.
- 5:10Speaker 7: So yesterday does something happen. If something happens, Yes, it
- 5:17Speaker 7: was Martin Luther King Day.
- 5:18Speaker 8: Yes.
- 5:25Speaker 7: Well, in addition to Martin Luther King Day, a certain person,
- 5:29Speaker 7: Donald Trump, was sworn back into the White House as
- 5:33Speaker 7: the forty seventh president.
- 5:36Speaker 2: They have got four more years of this and they
- 5:39Speaker 2: are losing it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: The hatred is palpable. Have a look at this.
- 5:45Speaker 9: He has decided to make good on his promise to
- 5:47Speaker 9: be a dictator.
- 5:48Speaker 5: In day one, they'll be a lawsuit over birthright citizenship.
- 5:51Speaker 5: They'll be a lawsuit over suspending asylum.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You know, if it's not broke, don't fix it. There
- 5:57Speaker 1: are a lot of big lies there in president for
- 5:59Speaker 1: a grand total of eleven hours, and he wasted no
- 6:02Speaker 1: time imposing his will on American government. I was prepared
- 6:05Speaker 1: for shark and awe. This is just shock and awful.
- 6:08Speaker 8: The executive orders on dei we in prisons, migrant shelters,
- 6:12Speaker 8: as well as in spaces like rape shelters that could
- 6:15Speaker 8: mean that people that are transgender could be moved out
- 6:17Speaker 8: of those spaces.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Look, this stuff, as you know, is just pathetic, but
- 6:22Speaker 2: it's also self defeating.
- 6:23Speaker 1: We all know, we've seen this for a decade.
- 6:25Speaker 2: It really is just wind beneath Donald Trump's wings. What
- 6:30Speaker 2: the left, of course need to do is examine their
- 6:32Speaker 2: own failings, their policies, their.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Personnel and all the rest of it. But will leave
- 6:37Speaker 1: them to all of that.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Now tonight, I want to let you know about something
- 6:40Speaker 2: else I'll be bringing you because I'm going to speak
- 6:43Speaker 2: to the man who was the longest serving national security
- 6:46Speaker 2: advisor to President Trump in his first term, and I
- 6:50Speaker 2: spoke to him about how Trump is going to be
- 6:52Speaker 2: different and why in this second term.
- 6:56Speaker 5: The first administration we had people who came in the
- 6:58Speaker 5: administration who didn't agree with President Trump, who I think
- 7:02Speaker 5: it had to be the grails of the adults in
- 7:03Speaker 5: the room. We've now got a president who's served as
- 7:07Speaker 5: commandery for four years, he knows what he wants and
- 7:09Speaker 5: he's got a great team with him.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yes, that full interview with rodbro Brian will be coming
- 7:16Speaker 2: up later on. Now, let's go back to issues in
- 7:19Speaker 2: Australia and just recap again the ongoing debate about anti Semitism,
- 7:24Speaker 2: domestic terrorism, the wave of it that's erupted across our
- 7:28Speaker 2: country over the past fifteen months.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And you know my view about the culpability.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Of the Prime Minister Anthony Albanezi and his government. So
- 7:37Speaker 2: let me share with you a view that was shared
- 7:39Speaker 2: on Australian television this morning from a former Australian Federal
- 7:43Speaker 2: Police officer.
- 7:45Speaker 10: So, just briefly, are you saying this federal government has
- 7:48Speaker 10: allowed this sort of hate speech to fester.
- 7:52Speaker 11: I'm saying that I've done a six different prime ministers
- 7:56Speaker 11: in the Australian Federal Police, a lot of my time
- 7:58Speaker 11: in Cana terrorism, and I've never seen such a jelly
- 8:01Speaker 11: George Spider's response to hatred and UnAustralian behavior by a
- 8:07Speaker 11: prime minister.
- 8:09Speaker 1: That assessment is obviously spot on.
- 8:12Speaker 2: This is something that all of us can clearly see
- 8:14Speaker 2: right around the country. It's so obvious that people looking
- 8:18Speaker 2: on from overseas can see what's going on here, can
- 8:21Speaker 2: see what the weakness of the federal government has led
- 8:24Speaker 2: to is Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister.
- 8:28Speaker 12: Obviously the attitude of the current Australian government towards Israel
- 8:36Speaker 12: is inflaming a lot of these emotions and giving I guess,
- 8:42Speaker 12: some acceptance when you do not fight it. I mean,
- 8:46Speaker 12: what are they waiting for for someone to die, for
- 8:49Speaker 12: someone to be murdered?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Look It might hurt Anthony Alberizi and his ministers to
- 8:55Speaker 2: hear this, but this assessment is absolutely right.
- 8:59Speaker 1: This is what all of us has seen transpiring.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It can be seen from overseas, and it's tragic for
- 9:04Speaker 2: our country. The security of the nation, the well being
- 9:08Speaker 2: of the Australian Jewish community is actually being torn down
- 9:12Speaker 2: along with social cohesion before our very eyes. This is
- 9:15Speaker 2: a tragic failing for Australia and it's a failing that
- 9:18Speaker 2: should be enough to rid the country of the Albaneze
- 9:22Speaker 2: Labor government if there is any such thing as political justice.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'll have more on this issue later in.
- 9:28Speaker 2: The program with Liberal Senative for Victoria Sarah Henderson. But
- 9:32Speaker 2: let's now I'll get back to the transformation in America
- 9:36Speaker 2: and around the world on account of the return of
- 9:39Speaker 2: Donald Trump to the White House, and in this case
- 9:42Speaker 2: especially let's look at the economic transformation. I managed to
- 9:45Speaker 2: catch up earlier today with Adam Crichton.
- 9:47Speaker 1: He's a former.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia and of course
- 9:51Speaker 2: he's the departing Washington correspondent for the Australian newspaper.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Adam Crichton, thanks for joining us.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Do you think that Donald Trump's going to be able
- 10:00Speaker 2: to unleash the animal spirits of the American economy.
- 10:04Speaker 9: Well, certainly that is the expectation. And we've already seen
- 10:06Speaker 9: the stock market's gone up a little bit since he's
- 10:08Speaker 9: come into office.
- 10:10Speaker 1: But look, I mean the stock.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Market is very expensive at the moment, most expensive that
- 10:13Speaker 9: it's ever been, and so there is a possibility that
- 10:15Speaker 9: he has been handed this hot potato with the economy.
- 10:18Speaker 9: The fiscal situation is also very bad. He doesn't like
- 10:22Speaker 9: to talk about that because he's a big spender. He
- 10:24Speaker 9: was a big spender in his first term. I mean,
- 10:25Speaker 9: as you know, the US government has more debt than
- 10:27Speaker 9: it did in World War Two.
- 10:28Speaker 1: This is what I was going to ask you about that.
- 10:30Speaker 1: There's incredible levels of debt. Can he do anything about that?
- 10:33Speaker 1: Will he do anything about that? No, he won't.
- 10:35Speaker 9: I don't think he will at all. I mean, of course,
- 10:38Speaker 9: they have this DOGE, you know, the Department of Government Efficiency,
- 10:40Speaker 9: which is a source of much amusement. But look, I
- 10:43Speaker 9: just look back at the history of Western governments and
- 10:45Speaker 9: they find it very hard to cut spending, extremely hard politically.
- 10:50Speaker 9: And I mean Trump has said, for instance that he's
- 10:52Speaker 9: not going to slash medicare. He's not going to slash
- 10:54Speaker 9: oscal security. These are two of the three biggest line
- 10:58Speaker 9: items in plus, of course the military. That's the other
- 11:01Speaker 9: big one, the third one, and he's not going to
- 11:03Speaker 9: touch that either.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Sure, so what's he going to cut?
- 11:05Speaker 9: There's not much left.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's about growth, then, isn't it somehow instigating more economic growth,
- 11:10Speaker 2: keeping taxes low and hoping debt reduces as a percentage?
- 11:14Speaker 9: Yeah, look, I would say that's wishful thinking. That's called
- 11:18Speaker 9: the Laugher curve. He came up with that idea. I
- 11:21Speaker 9: think most US taxes are already pretty lower. I mean,
- 11:25Speaker 9: certainly they're lower than ours in Australia. And in fact
- 11:28Speaker 9: that's a problem for Australia, I think, because we're going
- 11:30Speaker 9: to become more and more uncompetitive compared to the US,
- 11:32Speaker 9: and our economy is already struggling, as you know, quite
- 11:34Speaker 9: snific what we had seven quarters of negative growth. I
- 11:37Speaker 9: think I've read that per session, and so we've got,
- 11:40Speaker 9: you know, we've got a top marginal tax rate of
- 11:42Speaker 9: forty seven cents. That cuts in at least in US
- 11:44Speaker 9: dollar terms, at one hundred and ten thousand dollars, which
- 11:46Speaker 9: is very low. You know, why would a smart American
- 11:48Speaker 9: want to move to Australia under those circumstances, or indeed
- 11:51Speaker 9: anyone from any so anyway, So I think Trump will
- 11:54Speaker 9: put pressure on whoever is in power in Australia to
- 11:57Speaker 9: run a more competitive economy.
- 11:59Speaker 2: So much happened, yes, so many decisions and now it's
- 12:01Speaker 2: one that really stood out for me was the energy
- 12:03Speaker 2: emergency halting some wind investments or at least approvals, promising
- 12:09Speaker 2: to ramp up oil and gas production. This has huge
- 12:12Speaker 2: ramifications for Australia because we face the same problem.
- 12:16Speaker 9: Yes, it certainly does. And look, it's great for the US,
- 12:18Speaker 9: but of course the US and Australia are competitors with
- 12:21Speaker 9: energy exports, so it's not necessarily a great thing for Australia.
- 12:24Speaker 9: If the US is going to flood the market with
- 12:25Speaker 9: more supply, prices could go down. That could affect our currency,
- 12:29Speaker 9: which actually has already been falling, as you know, So
- 12:32Speaker 9: not necessarily great for Australia.
- 12:33Speaker 1: But you know we should do the same. We could
- 12:34Speaker 1: do the same.
- 12:35Speaker 13: You know.
- 12:36Speaker 2: The lesson, isn't it We need to understand we've created
- 12:39Speaker 2: our own energy crist I.
- 12:40Speaker 9: Mean, for me, I think Trump's decisions on fossil fuels
- 12:42Speaker 9: are just more extremely important politically because I think they
- 12:46Speaker 9: signal the end or the high water mark of this
- 12:48Speaker 9: obsession with green energy, et cetera and net zero blah
- 12:50Speaker 9: blah blah. I mean, if the most powerful country in
- 12:53Speaker 9: the world, still by far the most important economy, is
- 12:55Speaker 9: not going to pursue that, then how silly does everyone
- 12:58Speaker 9: else look?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Right, Australia energy rich country like Australia. It's basically Australia.
- 13:03Speaker 9: So I mean, I don't think that we can sustain
- 13:06Speaker 9: our net zero policy in Australia politically.
- 13:08Speaker 1: If you've got the US got so I'd say, even
- 13:11Speaker 1: after this announcement that I'm going.
- 13:13Speaker 9: To the coalition is going to have to dump it.
- 13:14Speaker 9: I think, yeah, that's my advice political discussion.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Should dump and zero it's increasing and poplar yeah, it's increasing.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Just finally, then let me get your thoughts on this.
- 13:25Speaker 2: It's outside really politics and economics. Oh, it's politics, all right,
- 13:28Speaker 2: But the media in this country. It's extraordinary to see
- 13:31Speaker 2: the polarization. Watching over the last couple of days on
- 13:34Speaker 2: certain channels, most of them, I suppose this is terrible.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Trump's he's going to start a war with China over Panama,
- 13:42Speaker 2: He's letting criminals out of jails. They just think it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: terrible a Fox News and elsewhere, and certainly more akin
- 13:48Speaker 2: to the way I see it, there's a new optimism,
- 13:50Speaker 2: there are new opportunities. This is a chance for Australia,
- 13:53Speaker 2: for America to strike out a new Yeah.
- 13:55Speaker 9: Look, well, I mean, certainly, you know, for eighty percent
- 13:57Speaker 9: of the mainstream press here extremely anti Trump, but also
- 14:00Speaker 9: their audiences are getting smaller and smaller and smaller. I
- 14:02Speaker 9: think people are getting angry and angry with the sort
- 14:04Speaker 9: of polarization in the media. It's going to be very
- 14:07Speaker 9: interesting to see whether that changes now.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Although you know, all of.
- 14:10Speaker 9: The ridiculous nonsense about the Elon Musk salute, the so
- 14:14Speaker 9: called Manzi salute, it does suggest to me that they
- 14:16Speaker 9: haven't really learned any lessons and they've got to go along.
- 14:19Speaker 9: But it actually helps, it actually helps Trump. He's secretly happy,
- 14:23Speaker 9: We're actually secretly happy about their nonsense. So yeah, look,
- 14:26Speaker 9: I agree, it's you know, two universes. But I think
- 14:29Speaker 9: you know, the you know, the Fox version of events
- 14:31Speaker 9: I think is far more realistic. And reflects what most
- 14:35Speaker 9: Americans are currently thinking.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and the polls show that exactly. Approval for Donald Trump.
- 14:42Speaker 9: Somewat ironically.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. Appreciate it. Adam Crichton.
- 14:47Speaker 2: There, he's had a fascinating four years here in Washington.
- 14:50Speaker 1: He's heading back to Australia in a few days. It
- 14:53Speaker 1: was great to catch up with him.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Let me bring in again our US analyst, Christen Tate
- 14:56Speaker 2: joining us late nights. Value you setting up late for
- 14:59Speaker 2: US Christian only five o'clock in Australia.
- 15:01Speaker 1: You'll appreciate.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Now it is day two of the Trump second presidency.
- 15:06Speaker 2: The left seem to understand it. Some of them are
- 15:08Speaker 2: in denial. Many still remain in open hostility.
- 15:12Speaker 14: Yeah, the left is in complete meltdown mode. I know
- 15:15Speaker 14: a lot of liberals. I live in Boston. I have
- 15:17Speaker 14: many of these people in my family, and this is
- 15:20Speaker 14: much more devastating to them than twenty sixteen was. In
- 15:23Speaker 14: twenty sixteen they kind of said, well, this was a fluke,
- 15:25Speaker 14: you know, But this time a message has been clearly
- 15:27Speaker 14: sent from the American people that they unequivocally deny and
- 15:31Speaker 14: reject the radical left ideas the Democrats put forward and
- 15:35Speaker 14: I kind of feel for these liberals. It's bad being
- 15:37Speaker 14: in that position. I was a conservative in Joe Biden's America,
- 15:41Speaker 14: and it's even worse for them now because mainstream brands
- 15:44Speaker 14: and celebrities are even kind of warming the Trump. We
- 15:46Speaker 14: saw Snoop Dogg and Carrie Underwood, two huge US stars
- 15:50Speaker 14: performing at inauguration events. We saw Oscar della Rena designing
- 15:53Speaker 14: these gowns for people like Avonka Trump. So the question
- 15:56Speaker 14: is what are they going to do now? And the
- 15:58Speaker 14: smart ones will sit down and recalibrate and figure out
- 16:00Speaker 14: how to make their message palatable going forward.
- 16:02Speaker 2: I'm going to come back to fashion with you in
- 16:04Speaker 2: a moment if we get some time, but I want
- 16:06Speaker 2: to stay on this them.
- 16:07Speaker 1: And you would have seen the.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Comments from the past or I showed earlier in the
- 16:12Speaker 2: National Cathedral today, extraordinary virtue signaling extraordinary sank demonia over
- 16:18Speaker 2: such a crucial issue. I got to shout everybody a little.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Bit more of this.
- 16:21Speaker 2: The name is Bishop Marion Edgar Bud and is a
- 16:24Speaker 2: little bit more of that speech directly to the President
- 16:27Speaker 2: in the National Cathedral.
- 16:30Speaker 4: I ask you to have mercy, mister President, on those
- 16:32Speaker 4: in our communities whose children fear that their parents will
- 16:35Speaker 4: be taken away, and that you help those who are
- 16:39Speaker 4: fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to
- 16:43Speaker 4: find compassion and welcome here. Our God teaches us that
- 16:50Speaker 4: we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we
- 16:55Speaker 4: will all want strangers in this land.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Christian left me almost speechless.
- 17:03Speaker 14: You'll view well the comments of this ridiculous women are
- 17:06Speaker 14: completely out of line with the vast majority of Christians
- 17:09Speaker 14: in this country. I'm a proud Catholic. The first thing
- 17:11Speaker 14: I did when I got to Washington, d C. As
- 17:13Speaker 14: I woke up Sunday morning, and I went to the
- 17:14Speaker 14: basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It's
- 17:17Speaker 14: the biggest Catholic church in the country, and the energy
- 17:21Speaker 14: in that beautiful church was absolutely electric. Catholics and other
- 17:25Speaker 14: Christians in this country, certainly Protestants, are overwhelmingly thrilled to
- 17:29Speaker 14: have a leader in this country who wants to protect
- 17:32Speaker 14: life and also rejects these ideas like boys can become
- 17:36Speaker 14: girls that destroy people's lives. So this woman is just
- 17:40Speaker 14: completely out of step with most Christians, not all, but
- 17:44Speaker 14: most Christians in this.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Country it is worth repeating that some Pauls have Donald
- 17:48Speaker 2: Trump's approval writing now on day one at fifty six percent.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Which is extraordinary.
- 17:52Speaker 2: So that's not only with a huge mandate, but with
- 17:55Speaker 2: ongoing goodwill from the great majority of Americans. I want
- 17:58Speaker 2: to go to another good development for him today.
- 18:01Speaker 1: This is Marco R. Rubio going into State Secretary.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He was confirmed by the Senate unanimously, a strong choice
- 18:09Speaker 2: at a really good start when it comes to these
- 18:11Speaker 2: getting this cabinet in shape.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 14: Look, I got to be honest, Chris. When I first
- 18:14Speaker 14: heard about Marco Rubio being Trumps selection, I wasn't too
- 18:17Speaker 14: thrilled about it. I remember in twenty thirteen, Marco Rubio
- 18:20Speaker 14: was part of the Gang of Eight. It was a
- 18:22Speaker 14: bipartisan group of senators that wanted to give essentially blanket
- 18:25Speaker 14: amnisky to illegal immigrants in this country. But in the
- 18:28Speaker 14: last couple of years we've seen Marco Rubio two point
- 18:31Speaker 14: zero and I love what he's been saying since he's
- 18:33Speaker 14: been nominated and now confirmed. He wants to put America first.
- 18:36Speaker 14: He understands that when we put America first and project
- 18:40Speaker 14: that strength on the world stage, it not only makes
- 18:42Speaker 14: a stronger America, but a stronger world. So I'm loving
- 18:45Speaker 14: what I've seen from Rubio.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Now.
- 18:47Speaker 2: There's a nice little touch when he was confirmed today,
- 18:50Speaker 2: I want to share it with our view.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Was just to give the background to this.
- 18:52Speaker 2: As most of you probably know, he's from Floria, he
- 18:55Speaker 2: has a Cuban background, He's Spanish speaking in Flora.
- 18:59Speaker 1: There's so many historis. I think you get plenty of
- 19:00Speaker 1: ads on TV like this.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Geico, maybe Facilico with that little set up here is
- 19:15Speaker 2: Marco Rubio who's about to be Secretary of State.
- 19:19Speaker 15: If I may take the liberty for just fifteen seconds
- 19:21Speaker 15: to say something in Spanish, because I know a lot
- 19:23Speaker 15: of people back home will be very proud, and I
- 19:25Speaker 15: want to make sure I acknowledge that Andletoria money that
- 19:31Speaker 15: president to Trump Bordeto, I just said, I saved a
- 19:35Speaker 15: much of money by switching to Geico. That's what I said.
- 19:38Speaker 2: So I'm more enthusiastic about Marco Rubia than you. You're
- 19:46Speaker 2: on board now, but I think you'll be good. And
- 19:49Speaker 2: we need to say he's got some monumental challenges which
- 19:52Speaker 2: we'll speak about in a moment. With that with Robert O'Brien,
- 19:55Speaker 2: but still on the confirmation front, more allegations thrown at
- 19:59Speaker 2: Pete Headseth today nominated as Defense Secretary. He's worn a
- 20:03Speaker 2: lot of at text. He did very well in these
- 20:05Speaker 2: confirmation hearings. Is there any doubt about his place in
- 20:08Speaker 2: the cabinet.
- 20:09Speaker 14: I don't think so at this point. I mean, I've
- 20:11Speaker 14: read the allegations. Heg Seth said that this is a
- 20:14Speaker 14: former in law of his who has an axe to
- 20:17Speaker 14: grind against the heg Seth family. Apparently she's a committed Democrat.
- 20:21Speaker 14: And look, the fact is, Chris, at this point, we
- 20:24Speaker 14: know heg Seth is not a perfect human being. He's
- 20:26Speaker 14: absolutely made mistakes in the past, but on policy he
- 20:29Speaker 14: is a perfect selection. And the Liberals, they already had
- 20:33Speaker 14: one scalp with Matt Gates. Trump cannot cave and let
- 20:36Speaker 14: this happen again. It would be very, very weak. So
- 20:39Speaker 14: do I think this will sink the nomination? Absolutely not.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Well, right, let's move back on to the media. I
- 20:44Speaker 2: showed some examples at the top of the program. Media
- 20:46Speaker 2: commentat is another openly hostile to Trump or in denial.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Let's have a look at the issue of January the
- 20:53Speaker 2: sixth and the patterns Jim Acosta on CNN.
- 20:57Speaker 6: You have the President of the United States. It's referring
- 21:00Speaker 6: to these people, many of them when they went to
- 21:03Speaker 6: jail and so on, as hostages. He has attempted time
- 21:06Speaker 6: and again to rewrite the history of January six Many
- 21:11Speaker 6: of his allies and supporters have attempted to rewrite the
- 21:13Speaker 6: history of January sixth. But you and I, we can
- 21:16Speaker 6: look at this video that we're showing our viewers right
- 21:18Speaker 6: now with our own eyes. We can listen to the
- 21:20Speaker 6: violent assault that occurred. We can look at the injuries
- 21:23Speaker 6: to people like Michael Fanone.
- 21:25Speaker 1: We understand what the truth is.
- 21:28Speaker 6: And yet the President of the United States continues to lie.
- 21:32Speaker 6: And I use the word lie because it is a
- 21:35Speaker 6: lie by calling these people hostages.
- 21:40Speaker 2: That just bledd it about this Christian. They're the official
- 21:42Speaker 2: opposition to Donald Trump. Now there's very nu asdin couplic
- 21:46Speaker 2: kind of discussions to have around all these genue the
- 21:48Speaker 2: six pads on both sides, because of course this christ
- 21:52Speaker 2: Liz Chinyan, now there's got patterns as well, but they
- 21:55Speaker 2: just flat out they've got Trump as a serial liar
- 21:59Speaker 2: on day one.
- 22:00Speaker 14: The liberal meltdown on the media has been so delicious.
- 22:04Speaker 14: And I have to tell you I don't usually watch
- 22:06Speaker 14: CNN and MSNBC, but over the last few days those
- 22:09Speaker 14: have been my favorite channels. I've been watching them whenever
- 22:12Speaker 14: I'm able to because the meltdowns are just fantastic. Trump
- 22:18Speaker 14: triggers these people like no other.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Well, this is the point, though, if they actually want
- 22:23Speaker 2: to progress the progressive cause, if you like, if they
- 22:25Speaker 2: want the left to recover, they should understand that all
- 22:28Speaker 2: this thing is, all this stuff is counterproductive.
- 22:30Speaker 1: It is wing win beneath his wings, He's fueled by
- 22:33Speaker 1: this criticism.
- 22:34Speaker 2: There's a lot of people who argue that after the
- 22:37Speaker 2: last election loss, that Trump was heading off to the
- 22:41Speaker 2: horizon until all of the league election against him made him.
- 22:46Speaker 1: A hero again.
- 22:47Speaker 14: These people in the media, a lot of them just
- 22:49Speaker 14: don't get it. And this goes back to my point earlier.
- 22:51Speaker 14: The ones who are smart are going to figure out
- 22:54Speaker 14: what went wrong and how to message in an effective way.
- 22:59Speaker 14: But right now, what's how And as the left wing
- 23:01Speaker 14: media has whittled down their bast only those really committed
- 23:04Speaker 14: liberals who just wan't like Trump no matter what he does,
- 23:06Speaker 14: and they're playing to that very small base. They are
- 23:08Speaker 14: not increasing their tent on the left at all. But
- 23:12Speaker 14: for conservatives, it's pretty fun to watch.
- 23:14Speaker 1: It, sure is. I bet you're having a bull now.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I said, I wanted to get back to fashion.
- 23:18Speaker 2: I wanted to have a look at Millennia Trump's hat
- 23:21Speaker 2: from the inauguration ceremony.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I thought it was a spectacular hat.
- 23:24Speaker 2: And one of the amusing things about it, of course,
- 23:26Speaker 2: was that prevented her husband, the President, from being able
- 23:29Speaker 2: to kiss her as he came in to the inauguration
- 23:32Speaker 2: in the Roadtunda. We just missed it there that he
- 23:34Speaker 2: went to kiss her, but the brim of that hat
- 23:36Speaker 2: actually kicked him away from making contact. But have a
- 23:40Speaker 2: look at this on social media today. I think this
- 23:41Speaker 2: is hilarious. This shows Millennia Trump's perspective on the events
- 23:47Speaker 2: from that hat.
- 23:49Speaker 14: I gotta be honest, I wasn't a fan of the hat. However,
- 23:53Speaker 14: I loved the majority of the outfits we saw and
- 23:57Speaker 14: the elegance and the grace. We are not only making
- 23:59Speaker 14: America great again, Chris, We're making America hot again. And
- 24:04Speaker 14: and it's just really great to see the fashion and
- 24:07Speaker 14: the outfits and the elegance. And Millennia Trump always looks
- 24:11Speaker 14: great wasn't a fan of the hat, but.
- 24:14Speaker 1: She always looks great.
- 24:14Speaker 2: What I'd love to see last night at the Bulls
- 24:17Speaker 2: was so many people said Milania's stern and the and
- 24:19Speaker 2: the two of them done it. You know, there's a
- 24:21Speaker 2: there's a skis in between them. Had a look at
- 24:24Speaker 2: them dancing and a lot of it. There was the
- 24:25Speaker 2: formal dances and then they were dancing to YMC. I
- 24:29Speaker 2: lots of smiles on the face of Millennia Trump. The
- 24:31Speaker 2: two of them were having a ball, wouldn't they.
- 24:33Speaker 14: They absolutely have a connection. I mean, we're all talking
- 24:35Speaker 14: about a marriage like the Clinton's, where you know, they
- 24:38Speaker 14: haven't been in the same location in years. I think,
- 24:41Speaker 14: you know, they clearly have a unique marriage given the
- 24:45Speaker 14: life of Donald Trump, but there's clearly love between them,
- 24:48Speaker 14: and it's it's really nice to see these moments.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Kristin, thanks for joining us again. We'll catch you again
- 24:53Speaker 1: tomorrow night. Thank you, Chris, Kristin tight they shall.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Be back with us tomorrow and not We're going to
- 24:57Speaker 2: take it right now. On the other side of it,
- 24:58Speaker 2: I'll show you the full interview with Donald Trump's former
- 25:01Speaker 2: national security advisor, Robert O'Brien. We'll talk about all the
- 25:04Speaker 2: issues confronting the US right around the globe.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Chris Kenny coming to you live from Washington, d C.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I'll have that interview with Robert O'Brien, Donald Trump's national
- 25:18Speaker 2: security advisor from his first term coming up in a
- 25:21Speaker 2: short while. But first I want to return to Australia
- 25:24Speaker 2: and the issue that's been dominating political debate for many
- 25:28Speaker 2: days now, and that is the rising wave of anti
- 25:30Speaker 2: Semitism around the country. There has been some good news
- 25:33Speaker 2: today with police announcing one arrest, with more arrests on
- 25:37Speaker 2: the way.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Here's Sky News' own Caroline Marcus.
- 25:41Speaker 16: Adam Edward Mole will spend the night behind bars over
- 25:45Speaker 16: the alleged attempted torching of a Newtown synagogue in Sydney's
- 25:49Speaker 16: Inner West. The thirty three year old is accused of
- 25:52Speaker 16: trying to set fire to the building. CCTV captured two
- 25:57Speaker 16: hooded man pouring clear liquid onto the bill and painting
- 26:01Speaker 16: swastikas on the synagogue's fans. Mister Mole was arrested overnight
- 26:06Speaker 16: and charged with destroying property and company using fire, destroying
- 26:10Speaker 16: or damaging property in company, having suspected stolen goods in
- 26:15Speaker 16: his personal custody and cultivating a prohibited plant.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Let's go now live to the Shadow Education Minister, Sarah Henderson.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Sarah, I wonder whether you can first just share your
- 26:28Speaker 2: thoughts on the latest developments, the fact that Anthony Albanezi
- 26:32Speaker 2: has had something of a national Cabinet meeting on these
- 26:34Speaker 2: issues and the fact that police have made in the rest.
- 26:41Speaker 10: Well, Chris, good afternoon. It is certainly positive that police
- 26:45Speaker 10: have arrested this person, so some progress on that shocking
- 26:50Speaker 10: attack on the synagogue. But let's not forget, Chris. This
- 26:55Speaker 10: is a national crisis that requires national leadership. We have
- 27:00Speaker 10: seen the Prime Minister missing in action. It has taken
- 27:03Speaker 10: him months and months to call a national Cabinet meeting
- 27:07Speaker 10: just to bring the relevant ministers around the table from
- 27:11Speaker 10: the states and territories, and that's appalling. He's made no
- 27:15Speaker 10: response at all to our package of tougher criminal laws
- 27:19Speaker 10: that we have announced, and of course Peter Dutton has
- 27:21Speaker 10: absolutely led the charge in saying there must be a
- 27:25Speaker 10: zero tolerance approach of anti Semitism. And as we've talked
- 27:29Speaker 10: about many times, Chris, so ground zero is our universities
- 27:33Speaker 10: where we saw for many, many months the Education Minister
- 27:36Speaker 10: Jason Clair and the Prime Minister taking no action on
- 27:40Speaker 10: the horrific protests, the encampments, the threats to Jewish students
- 27:45Speaker 10: and staff, and of course when you embolden these people,
- 27:50Speaker 10: this is what happens. It is absolutely shocking and as
- 27:56Speaker 10: I say, this is a national crisis and we have
- 27:59Speaker 10: seen no leadership at all from the Prime Minister.
- 28:04Speaker 2: What about these reports that there is intelligence suggesting that
- 28:08Speaker 2: overseas interests could be involved behind these attacks.
- 28:13Speaker 1: What more do we know about that? What more should
- 28:15Speaker 1: we know?
- 28:19Speaker 10: Well, of course this join and federal police have a
- 28:22Speaker 10: brief National Cabinet about this, and it is of course
- 28:25Speaker 10: a very serious situation and further evidence that this is
- 28:29Speaker 10: not just a matter of community safety and a matter
- 28:32Speaker 10: of safety for the Jewish community, but also national security.
- 28:37Speaker 10: It's deeply concerning, Chris. But as I say, their lack
- 28:42Speaker 10: of action from this government on this growing anti Semitism
- 28:46Speaker 10: crisis is ricocheting around the world, and we now have
- 28:50Speaker 10: Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharen Haschool saying does someone have
- 28:55Speaker 10: to die? What needs to happen before we can see
- 28:59Speaker 10: the appropriate amount of action from this hopeless and incompetent government.
- 29:04Speaker 10: So at the very least the Prime Minister needs to
- 29:06Speaker 10: match the package of reforms that we have announced led
- 29:10Speaker 10: by Peter Dutton, including of course mandatory minimum sentences for
- 29:15Speaker 10: terrorism of six years. This is domestic terrorism, Chris. It
- 29:19Speaker 10: is extremely frightening, It is extremely serious and it is
- 29:23Speaker 10: about time this Prime Minister started treating this issue with
- 29:28Speaker 10: the seriousness it deserves.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Well.
- 29:32Speaker 2: The straordinary thing, of course, is that the coalition of
- 29:36Speaker 2: the opposition, as you say, as well as community leaders
- 29:39Speaker 2: and media commentators, so many people have been calling for
- 29:42Speaker 2: TAFA retoric and Taugher action and Taugher law enforcement since
- 29:46Speaker 2: October twenty twenty.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Three, more than fifteen months ago.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yet we have heard this from the Prime Minister now
- 29:53Speaker 2: our claiming that he's actually been taking.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Action to Peter Dutton.
- 29:57Speaker 17: For someone who is responsible some national security issues as
- 30:02Speaker 17: Minister for Home Affairs, it should know better.
- 30:06Speaker 1: We have acted.
- 30:08Speaker 17: We have established the first envoy on anti Semitism that
- 30:12Speaker 17: could have been done by the former government. We've outlawned
- 30:15Speaker 17: Nazi and hate symbols that could have been done by
- 30:18Speaker 17: the former governor, with outlawed dosing that could have been
- 30:22Speaker 17: done by the former governor where provided increased security funding
- 30:27Speaker 17: for synagogue's places of worshiped schools, etc.
- 30:30Speaker 1: That could have.
- 30:31Speaker 17: Been done by the former government as well.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I've got to say, Sarah Henderson, he seems all at sea.
- 30:38Speaker 2: He just doesn't understand this. They've been lacking in tough
- 30:41Speaker 2: rhetoric and action right from the start. And also I
- 30:45Speaker 2: think what plays into this very strongly, and I think
- 30:47Speaker 2: the Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister has picked up on this
- 30:50Speaker 2: point as well that over the past year Anthony Albanisi
- 30:53Speaker 2: and Penny Wong and the alban EASi Labor government have
- 30:57Speaker 2: spent more time criticizing Israel then they have criticizing Hamas
- 31:02Speaker 2: and the other Islamus terrorist organizations.
- 31:08Speaker 10: Look absolutely and of course we've seen the horrific statements
- 31:12Speaker 10: of some Greens members. They are an anti Semitic party.
- 31:16Speaker 10: And just imagine if the Greens were in partnership with
- 31:20Speaker 10: Labor in a minority government after the next election. Just
- 31:24Speaker 10: imagine what would happen to this country. Chris I cannot
- 31:28Speaker 10: bear to think about it, and what rubbish from the
- 31:30Speaker 10: Prime Minister. The Hamas terrorist attack on the seventh of
- 31:34Speaker 10: October happened under his government and we have seen weak
- 31:38Speaker 10: and insipid and incompetent leadership. When the hits but to
- 31:42Speaker 10: hear extremist members were out on university grounds, the Prime
- 31:46Speaker 10: Minister said nothing. The Education Minister did.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Not object to this.
- 31:51Speaker 10: We called for the police to be called in to
- 31:53Speaker 10: get rid of the encampments which were fueling so much
- 31:57Speaker 10: hate and incitement. And again the government did nothing from
- 32:01Speaker 10: the very beginning, whether it's in our schools, our universities
- 32:04Speaker 10: and of course the horrific attack on the childcare center
- 32:08Speaker 10: in Sydney, it has all been just bits and pieces,
- 32:12Speaker 10: too little, too late from this incompetent, hopeless Prime minister.
- 32:16Speaker 10: He should be announcing today that he will match Peter
- 32:20Speaker 10: Dutton's package of reforms to ensure that this anti Semitism
- 32:26Speaker 10: crisis is stamped out in this country. It is really,
- 32:30Speaker 10: really heritical, not just to Jewish Australian's Chris. It is
- 32:34Speaker 10: horrific for all Australia, for all of Australia, because this
- 32:37Speaker 10: is the thin edge of where the tragedy. If this
- 32:39Speaker 10: can happen to the Jewish community, it can happen to
- 32:42Speaker 10: any community.
- 32:45Speaker 2: To right, Sarah Henderson I could not agree more it's
- 32:47Speaker 2: a very very tragic situation for our country and as
- 32:50Speaker 2: I say, on this issue alone, this mob do not
- 32:53Speaker 2: deserve to be leading such a great country because it
- 32:55Speaker 2: is doing so much damage to our.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Social cohesion and our national security.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Thanks so much for joining us, Sarah, Sarah Henderson there,
- 33:03Speaker 2: the Liberal Senator for Victoria and shadow Education Minister.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Got to get to a break.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I'll have Robert O'Brien and don't forget a great panel
- 33:10Speaker 2: coming up with Justin Smith and Joe Hilbrownd they go away,
- 33:16Speaker 2: Chris Kenny to Chris Kenny, coming to your life from Washington, DC.
- 33:20Speaker 2: As you know, there are all sorts of global strategic
- 33:22Speaker 2: challenges confronting the new Donald Trump administration. As you also know,
- 33:27Speaker 2: during his first term there were all sorts of staff
- 33:30Speaker 2: changes and dramatic controversy, a little bit of a revolving
- 33:34Speaker 2: door through the White House when it came to his
- 33:37Speaker 2: advisors and his cabinet. But Rod O'Brien was someone who
- 33:41Speaker 2: came in as his national security advisor and provided some
- 33:44Speaker 2: stability and remained there for the second two years of
- 33:47Speaker 2: that first term.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And I caught up with him here today.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Robert O'Brien, Thanks for joining us. There was a lot
- 33:54Speaker 2: of chaos in the first Trump administration, especially in the
- 33:58Speaker 2: early years.
- 33:59Speaker 1: What are the.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Signs that he's better prepared the second time around.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Well, I think oy the end of the first term,
- 34:04Speaker 5: we had a great team in place with the cabinet.
- 34:07Speaker 5: They were all on board with President Trump. They were
- 34:10Speaker 5: America first and peace to strength, and so with the
- 34:13Speaker 5: new cabinet, these are all people that support President Trump.
- 34:17Speaker 5: In the first administration, we had people who came in
- 34:19Speaker 5: the administration who didn't agree with President Trump or who
- 34:22Speaker 5: felt they had to be the guardrails or the adults
- 34:25Speaker 5: in the room. We've now got a president who served
- 34:27Speaker 5: as commander chief for four years. He knows what he
- 34:30Speaker 5: wants and he's got a great team with him.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about that team to some degree. At
- 34:35Speaker 2: lace Pete to Haigesth in defense. Obviously, he's known as
- 34:39Speaker 2: a media personnatally, primarily he had a military career earlier.
- 34:43Speaker 1: How do you think he'll go getting hold of the
- 34:45Speaker 1: vast military bureaucracy.
- 34:47Speaker 5: Well, Pete Haiks has served in the Armed Forces. He
- 34:50Speaker 5: was deployed to Iraq, so he's seen as a young officer.
- 34:53Speaker 5: You know, the military from the bottom up, and he's
- 34:56Speaker 5: going to be I think a soldier secretary. I think
- 34:58Speaker 5: that the men and women of the Armed Services are
- 35:00Speaker 5: gonna really respond to his leadership and the strength of
- 35:05Speaker 5: he projects. And he's on board one hundred percent with
- 35:07Speaker 5: Donald Trump. So he'll be confirmed, and I think he'll
- 35:09Speaker 5: do a great job lading the department.
- 35:12Speaker 2: And what about Marco Rubia, one time presidential Esperanza, now
- 35:16Speaker 2: as Secretary of Study, he's got a mammoth task ahead
- 35:19Speaker 2: of him in such a fragile global environment.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Well, look, it's a different world than that Donald Trump's
- 35:25Speaker 5: inherited the first time around. It's a world of a flame.
- 35:28Speaker 5: We left the office and in the world was at peace.
- 35:31Speaker 5: We had the Abraham Accords, we had peace in Europe,
- 35:34Speaker 5: peace in Asia. Now you've got to war in Ukraine,
- 35:36Speaker 5: you've got to war in the Middle East with Iran.
- 35:38Speaker 5: And so Marcos gonna have his handsful. But look, he
- 35:41Speaker 5: chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee, he was the ranking member
- 35:45Speaker 5: on that committee. He's been in the center for thirteen years.
- 35:48Speaker 5: He knows what's going on, and he, you know, he's
- 35:51Speaker 5: got the statue or having run for president and having
- 35:54Speaker 5: been a world you know, a national figure and even
- 35:56Speaker 5: a world figure in the past. I think he's going
- 35:59Speaker 5: to take on this this challenge with robustness.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Let's talk about a couple of those big strategic challenges, because,
- 36:05Speaker 2: as you say, Donald Trump quite rightly is returning the
- 36:07Speaker 2: focus to peace through strength.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Look at the Middle East.
- 36:10Speaker 2: There's no doubt that the ceasefire that's in place now
- 36:13Speaker 2: would not have occurred without Donald Trump's election and the
- 36:16Speaker 2: threats he was making. But it's still very fragile, isn't it.
- 36:19Speaker 2: You're dealing with a terrorist organization in Hummas. What do
- 36:22Speaker 2: you think Donald Trump will do to eradicate or eliminate
- 36:26Speaker 2: the influence of Hummas and perhaps more importantly, push back
- 36:30Speaker 2: against Iran and the way it used all sorts of
- 36:34Speaker 2: actors in the region to destabilize it.
- 36:37Speaker 5: You've hit it on the Headcress. These Erranium prixis are
- 36:41Speaker 5: you know, bad actors are the Malayian influencers in the
- 36:44Speaker 5: whole Middle East. So you've got the Hooties, You've got
- 36:47Speaker 5: the Katip Haswell in Iraq, You've got Haswell in Lebanon,
- 36:51Speaker 5: which Israelis have done a good time Touranian and you've
- 36:53Speaker 5: got Hamas and that's just the sort of it. And
- 36:55Speaker 5: so you know, we're pushing back on Iran and expect
- 37:00Speaker 5: more pushback in Iran, and Iran should be very nervous.
- 37:03Speaker 5: But these other organizations like come os that are holding
- 37:05Speaker 5: American hostages, holding Israeli hostages, they got to take a
- 37:09Speaker 5: look at what President Trump did with ISIS in the
- 37:11Speaker 5: first term, i ISIS was shut down, We eliminated the
- 37:16Speaker 5: entire caliphate, and then we went and got Bagdaddy. And
- 37:18Speaker 5: what I've said is for these ISIS terrorists too are
- 37:20Speaker 5: holding American hostages and holding Israeli hostages. You know, Bagdaddy's
- 37:25Speaker 5: life ended in a tunnel under a compound being chased
- 37:28Speaker 5: by a Belgian malwail military working dog. That's that's gonna
- 37:31Speaker 5: be their fate if they don't let these American hostages
- 37:33Speaker 5: go and let them go quickly.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about Eastern Europe and Ukraine. Of course
- 37:38Speaker 2: President Trump is said he can end that war.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Will he be.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Looking at doing a deal with Putin trading land territory
- 37:44Speaker 2: full peace? And if so, how on earth would let
- 37:47Speaker 2: me be Zolenski ever agree to that?
- 37:49Speaker 5: Well, look, at the end of the day, it's the
- 37:51Speaker 5: Ukrainians that have to settle the war with Russia, and
- 37:53Speaker 5: they've got to decide what they want to do with
- 37:55Speaker 5: their territory and if they want to see some territory
- 37:57Speaker 5: for peace. But they're going to need really strong security guarantees,
- 38:00Speaker 5: you know, if not NATO membership thing. They need you know,
- 38:03Speaker 5: allied countries to put troops on the ground in Ukraine.
- 38:05Speaker 5: It can't just be a piece of paper, because we
- 38:07Speaker 5: can't let Putin just have five years to rebuild, rearm
- 38:11Speaker 5: and attack Ukraine again like he's done twice in the past.
- 38:14Speaker 5: So we have to have serious security guarantees for the Ukrainians.
- 38:17Speaker 5: But ultimately they have to decide what they want to
- 38:19Speaker 5: give up for peace. Right now, the sad thing in
- 38:21Speaker 5: Ukrainate it's not a matter of money, it's a matter
- 38:24Speaker 5: of men and Chris, the Ukrainians are losing thousands and
- 38:27Speaker 5: thousands of men and they're a small country up against
- 38:30Speaker 5: a very big country with Russia. So they've got to
- 38:33Speaker 5: they got to decide what they want to do. But
- 38:35Speaker 5: the real question is, you know, Ukrainian manpower, and now
- 38:38Speaker 5: with the Russians bringing the North Koreans into fight for them,
- 38:41Speaker 5: it's it's a real hard road to hoe for the Ukrainians.
- 38:44Speaker 5: We've got to be there to support them, We've got
- 38:46Speaker 5: to vit them and put into the table. Probably further
- 38:49Speaker 5: economic sanctions against the Russians, either threatened or imposed, well,
- 38:53Speaker 5: will help bring putin to the table.
- 38:54Speaker 2: So many challenges, so much happening, so much action yesterday.
- 38:58Speaker 2: That must be the most action in terms of policy
- 39:01Speaker 2: decisions executive rul is ever seen in America on one day,
- 39:05Speaker 2: especially the fifth day, half a day really of a
- 39:07Speaker 2: sitting president.
- 39:08Speaker 1: But let's pick at least one of those.
- 39:10Speaker 2: President Trump says he's going to retake the Panama Canal.
- 39:14Speaker 2: What on earth does that mean?
- 39:15Speaker 1: And what are we going to see happen?
- 39:17Speaker 5: Well, I think that was the biggest news from the
- 39:19Speaker 5: inaugural speech, is the issue with Panama, and so the
- 39:23Speaker 5: canal is critical to America. That's how we move our ships,
- 39:26Speaker 5: our warships from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean,
- 39:29Speaker 5: where a two ocean country, we have to be able
- 39:31Speaker 5: to move our fleet back and forth. But we also
- 39:33Speaker 5: have seventy percent of the shipping that goes to the
- 39:35Speaker 5: canal goes to American ports. So the canal is the
- 39:38Speaker 5: lifeblood for the American economy. We gave the canal. We
- 39:44Speaker 5: built the canal at great cost of men and material
- 39:47Speaker 5: and expense. We help Panamo get its independence with the canal,
- 39:52Speaker 5: and we ran the cow for many many years. Now
- 39:54Speaker 5: that we were in a terrific act of generosity, we
- 39:57Speaker 5: gave the canal back to the Panamanians, which they should
- 40:00Speaker 5: have appreciated. Hopefully they do. But the Panamanians then gave
- 40:04Speaker 5: the operation of the canal by by putting the port
- 40:06Speaker 5: on the east and the west of the canal. They
- 40:09Speaker 5: gave the ports to the Chinese. We didn't give the canal,
- 40:11Speaker 5: as a president said yesterday, we didn't give the canal
- 40:13Speaker 5: back to the Chinese, which is our leadingship political foe.
- 40:17Speaker 5: We get it to the Panamanians. So if the Panamanians
- 40:19Speaker 5: can't run it, we'll run it for him.
- 40:21Speaker 1: How will that happen in practical.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Tembs, Well, look, in practical terms, if the Panamanians should
- 40:26Speaker 5: kick the kick the Chinese out of Panama immediately, that's
- 40:29Speaker 5: that's the first thing they should do and get back
- 40:30Speaker 5: in compliance with the treaty. And they should stop putting
- 40:32Speaker 5: putting huge charges on American shipping, which which is a
- 40:36Speaker 5: drain on our economy and go back to fair pricing
- 40:40Speaker 5: for the canal and kick the Chinese out, and that'd
- 40:42Speaker 5: be a start. Otherwise they're going to lose the canal.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Now, a question is so important for Australia. Is orcustier
- 40:49Speaker 2: under President Trump? Two point zero.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Aucus is very safe and the president President Trump had
- 40:53Speaker 5: a great relationship with the SCOMO, with the Scott Morrison.
- 40:57Speaker 5: He brought Scott Morrison here for a ski visit that
- 41:01Speaker 5: I was at the dinner. It was amazing. And the
- 41:05Speaker 5: relationship between the President of Australia is strying it to
- 41:07Speaker 5: be strong even under a different party in the current
- 41:09Speaker 5: Prime minister. So the American Australian relationship is rock solid
- 41:14Speaker 5: and ARCIS is gonna be rock solid as well.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Robert o' brian, thanks so much for talking to us.
- 41:19Speaker 5: Thank you, Chris. It's great to be with you and
- 41:21Speaker 5: see how all the first back in Australia for.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Me fascinating staff. The world has changed. It is changing
- 41:27Speaker 2: under Donald Trump. Let's hope it's all for the good.
- 41:29Speaker 2: After the break, we'll talk about one of those big changes.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Of course, Donald Trump has already issued the executive order
- 41:34Speaker 2: to take the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement
- 41:38Speaker 2: should Australia follow it, I'll be back with the panel
- 41:41Speaker 2: after this. At this time on a Wednesday, we usually
- 41:48Speaker 2: have a Wednesday wrangle between Justin Smith and Liz Stoora.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Justin joins us tonight.
- 41:53Speaker 2: But Liz is away, so we've got Joe Hildebrand filling
- 41:56Speaker 2: in again. Great to have you, Joe, but there's not
- 41:58Speaker 2: going to be any wrangling you too.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I'm going to agree with each other. I'm going to
- 42:01Speaker 1: have to wrangle with both of you.
- 42:03Speaker 18: I think we've actually broken the space time continuing Chris,
- 42:06Speaker 18: because usually I fill in for Justson and now suddenly
- 42:10Speaker 18: we've been seen on the same screen together. People are
- 42:13Speaker 18: scratching their heads, going, oh my god, these are two
- 42:15Speaker 18: different people.
- 42:16Speaker 13: A couple of scruffy guys with glasses. Yeah, that's right,
- 42:20Speaker 13: scruffy guys.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Well, here's here's one I want to wrangle with you both.
- 42:26Speaker 2: The biggest economy in the world now is pulling out
- 42:29Speaker 2: of the Paris Agreement. It's not going to impoverish itself
- 42:33Speaker 2: in pursuit of net zero by twenty fifty. Surely Australia
- 42:37Speaker 2: should do the same. Why should we impoverish ourselves when
- 42:41Speaker 2: we can't really do anything on a global scale. America
- 42:44Speaker 2: is now getting out, China is the biggest polluter in
- 42:46Speaker 2: the world and continues to increase its emissions.
- 42:49Speaker 1: What on earth are we doing to ourselves?
- 42:54Speaker 18: Well, we shouldn't be impoverishing ourselves. And part of the
- 42:57Speaker 18: reason why the net zero target was embraced by Scott
- 43:02Speaker 18: Morrison and obviously had long been held by the Labor
- 43:04Speaker 18: Party as well, is because it actually presents economic opportunities
- 43:08Speaker 18: for Australia. It opens up trading our networks with countries
- 43:12Speaker 18: that have also signed on to it. But how we
- 43:15Speaker 18: do it is, of course the bility is the question.
- 43:16Speaker 18: We have to make sure. I know he's laughing at me.
- 43:21Speaker 18: How we do it is what's important.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Sorry, Joe, I'm sorry, Joe. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Joe,
- 43:25Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Joe. We hear this all the time.
- 43:28Speaker 2: You know, we're going to get cheaper electricity and there
- 43:30Speaker 2: have been all these green jobs and it's going to
- 43:32Speaker 2: be this wonderful sort of fairyland.
- 43:34Speaker 1: But it's not happened in Australia. It's not happened in
- 43:36Speaker 1: any country, and it's making us poorer. It takes a
- 43:42Speaker 1: long time.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Justin a want's have a look to Matt Canavan on
- 43:44Speaker 2: Sky News last night and see what he had to
- 43:46Speaker 2: say about this.
- 43:47Speaker 19: I think the question is going to be put now
- 43:49Speaker 19: to every political leader that supports this is what does
- 43:52Speaker 19: Australia get out of this? What do Australians get out
- 43:55Speaker 19: of staying committed to a Paris Agreement which puts US
- 43:58Speaker 19: on an arbitrary, artificial lockstep path and NNSU emissions by
- 44:02Speaker 19: twenty fifty.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Okay, justin you'll go, why is he wrong? But I
- 44:09Speaker 1: have a look at what we're talking about it.
- 44:10Speaker 13: There's no reason why we shouldn't always be looking at
- 44:13Speaker 13: things like the Paris Agreement and say, hey, are we
- 44:15Speaker 13: still on the right track with that? There's no problem
- 44:17Speaker 13: with questioning it. But let's have a look at the
- 44:19Speaker 13: people that you're backing here. You're backing Trump for a start,
- 44:23Speaker 13: because he made this decision. Now, Trump is a guy
- 44:25Speaker 13: who actually doesn't believe that climate change is a real thing.
- 44:29Speaker 13: So have a think about that for a second. You're following,
- 44:32Speaker 13: we're following the lead reason who doesn't believe climate change
- 44:35Speaker 13: is a real thing. And then we've got the Senate
- 44:38Speaker 13: here we've got a couple of senators here in Australia.
- 44:41Speaker 13: People aren't cannaban, don't believe in climate change either, and
- 44:44Speaker 13: also talk about us spewing out only one percent of
- 44:47Speaker 13: the world's carbon into the atmosphere. Now, if we're going
- 44:50Speaker 13: to look at that and say, well, hang on a second,
- 44:54Speaker 13: is that really the way it works? So if we're
- 44:56Speaker 13: only one percent, does that not mean we can't be
- 44:58Speaker 13: a leader in this world as far as climate change goes,
- 45:03Speaker 13: Give me a break. If we're going to follow people
- 45:05Speaker 13: into this. If we're going to question the Paris Agreement,
- 45:09Speaker 13: let's question it with some people with some credibility in
- 45:12Speaker 13: this area.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Please, yeah, see.
- 45:15Speaker 2: The people I care about in this debate, O of
- 45:17Speaker 2: the Australian people. And it's not about what Donald Trump
- 45:21Speaker 2: believes about science. It's about the practicality of what's happened
- 45:24Speaker 2: in economics and science. We cannot in Australia make any
- 45:28Speaker 2: difference to the global climate, but we will impoverish ourselves.
- 45:31Speaker 1: We are so we do not solves by pursuing this.
- 45:34Speaker 1: And if America is.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Out of it, well all right, But in your view,
- 45:38Speaker 2: we're going.
- 45:38Speaker 1: To harm ourselves to do nothing.
- 45:40Speaker 13: You want to us, how do we do China, and
- 45:45Speaker 13: how do we ask India? And how do we ask
- 45:47Speaker 13: the United States to do better? If we're not going
- 45:50Speaker 13: to do better ourself. It starts with small things are
- 45:53Speaker 13: ignoring us.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's like we're in kumbo, our class
- 45:58Speaker 2: at kindergarten.
- 45:59Speaker 1: These are royal e colonies. It's real science, all right.
- 46:04Speaker 1: We're going to move on to another.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Is showing your thoughts on these to look again at
- 46:08Speaker 2: what the Let's hit you out a lot warmer than
- 46:11Speaker 2: mail I can tell you. Let's have a look at
- 46:13Speaker 2: what the bishop just up the hill here at the
- 46:15Speaker 2: National Cathedral said in a special service for the newly
- 46:18Speaker 2: inaugurated president today.
- 46:21Speaker 4: In the name of our God, I ask you to
- 46:26Speaker 4: have mercy upon the people in our country.
- 46:30Speaker 1: We're scared now.
- 46:33Speaker 4: There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican
- 46:40Speaker 4: and independent families, some who fear for their lives. And
- 46:47Speaker 4: the people, the people who pick our crops and clean
- 46:52Speaker 4: our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants,
- 46:56Speaker 4: who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants, and
- 46:59Speaker 4: work night shifts in hospitals. They they may not be
- 47:03Speaker 4: citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority
- 47:10Speaker 4: of immigrants are not criminals.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Joe peak virtue signaling.
- 47:16Speaker 18: Could you see sort of all the frantic texting just
- 47:19Speaker 18: out of shotgoing who invited her? How does she get
- 47:21Speaker 18: on the list? Where did she come from? This is
- 47:23Speaker 18: what happens when you get the Uniting Church in Now. Look,
- 47:27Speaker 18: I think that, Look, I think obviously that is a
- 47:31Speaker 18: valid point. And I know for a fact there are
- 47:33Speaker 18: people who are very nervous about what Donald Trump will do.
- 47:36Speaker 18: The truth is he's already been president once before the
- 47:38Speaker 18: sky didn't fall in. He talks very tough because I
- 47:41Speaker 18: think people are sick of the quote unquote woke rhetoric,
- 47:45Speaker 18: and people are sick of being sort of humorously lectured
- 47:47Speaker 18: to about what they can and can't say. And I
- 47:49Speaker 18: think that that little lecture would have could have been
- 47:52Speaker 18: a bit better delivered, if if it had been not
- 47:55Speaker 18: so kind of thuddingly earnest. But yes, absolutely, But but
- 48:00Speaker 18: what is the point? I mean, Donald Trump clearly has
- 48:02Speaker 18: been elected on an anti illegal immigration platform.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Whether you agree with.
- 48:08Speaker 18: That or not, that is what he ran on. That
- 48:10Speaker 18: is what he won on, and won very emphatically on.
- 48:13Speaker 18: So obviously he's going to pursue that. I you know,
- 48:17Speaker 18: there there are more than two genders. I actually believe
- 48:19Speaker 18: that believed or not. If you're born a hermaphrodite or
- 48:21Speaker 18: if you're born he just said, no, that is that
- 48:23Speaker 18: is a scientific fact. But again when you have the
- 48:26Speaker 18: left saying, oh no, there's actually seventy two, well again
- 48:29Speaker 18: that robs down their credibility.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Indeed, Joe, sorry, Justin, we right out of the time.
- 48:37Speaker 2: I appreciate you joining us so much. Justin Smith and
- 48:40Speaker 2: Joe Hildebrown. That's all the time I got for you
- 48:42Speaker 2: here from Washington, d C.
- 48:44Speaker 1: I'm going to go and thaw out.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Peter Kretlin is going to bring you up to date
- 48:47Speaker 2: on everything in OZ and I'll be back here tomorrow
- 48:50Speaker 2: night to wrap up the week in Washington, d C.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Cheers,
