- 0:00All right, hour number two, Miller and Condon welcome back
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network, all our affiliates across the state
- 0:05of Iowa. Glad you're with us here.
- 0:07Trent and I will take you until 2:00 off the bench coming up to
- 0:10until 5 overtime Iowa 5 until 6. Cappy momentarily Rob Doster
- 0:15field of 68 on the final four. Bottom of the hour.
- 0:18Let's get to Chicago. He is the cap man ESPN 1000.
- 0:22Of course, his YouTube channel is taking off and building each
- 0:26and every month. Cap Trenton.
- 0:27Ken, thanks for coming on as always.
- 0:29Enjoyed the recap last night. I was blown away Cap, by going
- 0:34on Twitter and this was not on April first.
- 0:36It was after the game last night and seeing how many people
- 0:39sticking up for PCA bunting on an O2 count when you need
- 0:43runners on. I get it, he's fast as the win,
- 0:46but the game has really changed, Cap.
- 0:48If that one's passed me by, I still think it's an egregious
- 0:51error. When you saw what he was trying
- 0:53to do, did it make sense to you? I didn't like that he bunked it
- 0:58on 2 strikes but I understood it.
- 1:01I mean, he's trying to get on and then get the tying run to
- 1:05the plate in a 2 nothing game. Look, it was a tough night to
- 1:10hit. There's no way that anyone was
- 1:11taking a ball out of the ballpark there.
- 1:13Yep, true. But I was more frustrated with
- 1:17him and you know, I'm a huge PCA fan.
- 1:19More frustrated You can't dive for that qualified field in the
- 1:236th inning and then let it get by you.
- 1:25If you dive, you better catch it.
- 1:27If the least you got to knock it down and keep it in front of
- 1:30you. Yeah, and obviously cap it and
- 1:33Bregman had a chance. Bregman probably say that, you
- 1:35know, 9 times out of 10 he gets that ball and it was scalded.
- 1:38It was moving down to the hot corner.
- 1:40But to put runners on 2nd and 3rd and the guy that was in, was
- 1:44it Maton? Yeah, it was Maton.
- 1:46At the time I thought, I thought he was.
- 1:49Yeah. I thought he was going to get
- 1:50off the hook cap. I really did.
- 1:52Well, you can't walk the first batter as a reliever especially,
- 1:56so he walks the first hitter. Then PCA misplays the ball and
- 2:01it ends up rolling past him. So they get second and third and
- 2:06now you get a strikeout. Maiton makes a really good play
- 2:11on a hard ground ball back to the mound, looks him back,
- 2:14throws the first, got him, and then you get the ball scalded at
- 2:18Bregman and it gets past him. There's your ball game right
- 2:21there. We see Matthew Boyd, he'll be
- 2:23starting here for the game this afternoon.
- 2:26Boy, the guy that had a career year a year ago, didn't go very
- 2:31well in his last spring training start, went poorly in his
- 2:34opener. Is it lingering in the back of
- 2:37your mind, the Matthew Boyd that we saw a year ago?
- 2:40Maybe that's not repeatable at minimum and maybe there might be
- 2:43some bigger concerns. Going for your thoughts on Boyd.
- 2:47You know, he had a very good year last year.
- 2:49He really did. Now, do I think he's going to be
- 2:51an All Star again? I don't, because I don't think
- 2:54he has that type of elite stuff, like everything went his way
- 2:59last year. But he's a solid Major League
- 3:03pitcher. I mean, if you're playing today
- 3:05to win a series, you should beat the Angels.
- 3:08They're not that good. Soriano pitch really well last
- 3:11night. He's a very good pitcher.
- 3:13You made one mistake in the outfield.
- 3:15It cost you a game. You got to go out and find a way
- 3:17to win a baseball game today. You do.
- 3:19I mean, there's no, you know, panic that they're want, what
- 3:22are they, Cubs two and three? I mean, people tweeting at me
- 3:27today, it was a must win. We've got to get this one.
- 3:30Like, are you stupid? It's April first.
- 3:33I mean, talk to me in September, but.
- 3:38Love the passion, Love the passion.
- 3:40I got to ask. I got to ask you.
- 3:42It really helps our business, right?
- 3:44I got to ask you about Cabrera. I thought he was unbelievable on
- 3:46Monday night, especially I, I, I, I enjoyed seeing it more so
- 3:50watching Owen Casey in the start that he's off to with the
- 3:53Marlins, knowing that you got to give up something to get
- 3:56something. I thought Casey was going to
- 3:58play right field at Wrigley Field for 10 or 12 years, but
- 4:01Cabrera Burr was outstanding cap and I think Cubs fans wanted to
- 4:04see that and saw that from the newly acquired right-hander.
- 4:09Yeah, he was phenomenal. 6 innings, 5 KS, one hit, no runs,
- 4:13one walk. That's exactly what you're
- 4:15looking for. And you know, let him keep going
- 4:19out and throwing well and being a real good piece of your
- 4:23rotation and no one will be upset about Owen Casey.
- 4:27And he's a good player. Nobody will be upset.
- 4:30So Cabrera stud and Kate Horton Stud also, we had a lot of
- 4:35conversations last summer, Kathy, about Eddings limit and
- 4:38there wasn't anything specific, but we were just kind of
- 4:40wondering. Now, of course we know how the
- 4:42season played out a year ago with really probably both these
- 4:45guys, Cabrera, all the arm injury injuries that he has had.
- 4:48I mean, do you anticipate it's going to be a lot of short
- 4:51hooks? Hey, we're up there at 80
- 4:53pitches. We're in the 5th inning.
- 4:54We're in control of this game. We're going to pull them.
- 4:57Are they going to be careful with both Horton and Cabrera
- 4:59throughout the quarter? I mean, I don't think they're
- 5:02pulling them at 80 pitches. I do not, especially when the
- 5:05weather warms up. I mean, it's not a fun day to
- 5:07pitch today. It's 38° here.
- 5:09And I mean, I did that beat. You know, I was that teams pre
- 5:14and post host for 25 years. I can't tell you how many games.
- 5:18I still remember doing a pregame show, but for Cubs, White Sox,
- 5:22and it was like 38° and Frank Thomas is sitting next to me and
- 5:27he's literally got his arms around me.
- 5:29He's shivering, he's that cold. And I'm like, OK, Frank.
- 5:33This is this. Is absolutely awful baseball
- 5:36weather, he said. Try eating in it.
- 5:38Horrible, but it's a good day to pitch today.
- 5:43Michael Conforto, and I'm not saying he's washed up Justin
- 5:46Turner, who was in charge of the meals on the road last year, but
- 5:50Conforto's off to another terrible start.
- 5:52Yeah, I, when I look back, Cap, I, I guess I didn't recall that
- 5:56he was. He had the type of offensive
- 5:58numbers that he had not too long ago in his career.
- 6:01Now, they've clearly tailed off since that time, but Conforto
- 6:05seems to be that one guy on the roster that you're wondering,
- 6:09you know, is he going to be there for the duration or if
- 6:12there is a move that needs to be made that Conforto might be the
- 6:16odd man out. Do you see it like that?
- 6:18Because obviously he's off to a bad start Again, it's five
- 6:20games. But I'm just I was surprised at
- 6:23the signing and I'm just wondering how long he's going to
- 6:26be there for. And they signed him to a a minor
- 6:31league deal, so I wasn't surprised by the signing.
- 6:35I'll be surprised if he hangs on and still there, you know, 3-4
- 6:41five months from now unless he picks it up.
- 6:43I don't see that. I do not.
- 6:45Who worries you, Cap by the start that they've had?
- 6:48Who's worried? And again, who worries you?
- 6:52Who's concerning? I don't think anybody can.
- 6:56I'm not five games out of 162. The Brewers started O and four
- 7:01last year and gave up 47 runs in the first four games.
- 7:05They ended up leading MLB in wins, then an ERA of 346 or
- 7:10whatever, 340-7359. So yeah, there's nobody I'm
- 7:15concerned about yet. Now, do I expect Michael
- 7:17Conforto to be one of the All Star Game?
- 7:20I do not. But other than that, no, it's
- 7:23way too soon to be concerned. Early thoughts on Bregman?
- 7:28Had a couple of homers the other day, Definitely helps things
- 7:30out. Just seeing him over there at
- 7:32the hot corner a just a professional.
- 7:35And that article he wrote for the players trivia, just talking
- 7:37about playing in Wrigley Field, I think that definitely brought
- 7:41even more Cubs fans on his side side.
- 7:43But just your thoughts on Bregman and what he's going to
- 7:45be for this team going forward? Look, they brought him in a
- 7:50because he's a really good player, but B for his leadership
- 7:54and I'm a huge fan. Alex Bregman, he'll he's going
- 7:57to hit that home runs. What back to bid 2 the other day
- 8:01on Sunday. I fully expect him to be playing
- 8:03at an All Star level. I expected to be playing at a
- 8:06Gold Glove level. We're five games in and the
- 8:10conditions last night, today, no fun to play baseball, no.
- 8:15No, and again, I'm not, I'm not faulting him for that ball that
- 8:18got by him. It was absolutely moving.
- 8:20So Horner gets the extension, which is good.
- 8:23I like Horner doesn't have a ton of power, but he's a hell of a
- 8:25player and by all accounts, pretty good in the clubhouse.
- 8:29A piece today in the Athletic as to who may be next.
- 8:32And is Ian Hap going to get one of those extensions at any time
- 8:36during the season or is he going to have to wait?
- 8:39Or how's this going to play out when it comes to Ian Hapcap?
- 8:42How do you think it plays out? I wouldn't be shocked if they
- 8:46signed him after the season. I will be surprised if he gets
- 8:49an in season extension. I will.
- 8:52I'd be very surprised. Now, if you told me they locked
- 8:55up Michael Bush, that would not surprise me.
- 8:59But Ian Hap, no, I think he wants to be a Cub.
- 9:02I think he's, you know, wants his wife here.
- 9:05His wife is from Arlington Heights.
- 9:07But I do not think they extend him to the offseason.
- 9:11When it's always an offseason conversation, it'll be a big
- 9:15one. Obviously when we get to the
- 9:16deadline, it depends on how the team's playing all that.
- 9:18But financial flexibility, for whatever reason, feels like it's
- 9:21always a big topic with the Ricketts family and the way that
- 9:23they're going to spend. When you crystal ball, when we
- 9:26get to the trade deadline, say there's a move out there
- 9:29spending wise, what shape are the Cubs here as we look to the
- 9:32middle of the year? In terms of spending, I had this
- 9:36discussion with Jed and Crane Caney the other day.
- 9:39It's never about money, Jed said.
- 9:43I've never, ever been in a situation in my entire career
- 9:47where a deadline deal ever came down to money.
- 9:49It's what they want in Prospect Capital.
- 9:52Last year they wanted either Mackenzie Gore or Joe Ryan, the
- 9:57twins. For Joe Ryan literally said
- 10:00we'll give them to you. We want Kate Horton, we want
- 10:04Matt Shaw, we want Owen Casey. Only an absolute maniac would
- 10:10make a deal like that. No chance you're doing that.
- 10:14I wouldn't give you Kate Horton straight up for him.
- 10:16Why would I do that? Joe Ryan's good pitcher.
- 10:19I think Kate Horton has the upside in him to be better AB he
- 10:25makes no money. Why would I take on a big
- 10:27contract and give you a 23 year old starter who has Cy Young
- 10:31stuff? That would be a terrible deal
- 10:34for the Cubs. Capped to the White Sox, I see
- 10:37they've already postponed Opening Day, which was scheduled
- 10:39to be tomorrow, Thursday. They.
- 10:40Pushed. Well, they should have postponed
- 10:42today's game because they're down 8.
- 10:43Nothing in the fourth. Oh.
- 10:45Jesus, I thought they were going to again.
- 10:49I thought they'd get off to a better start.
- 10:50Murakami's hitting the ball. That's, I guess, the one
- 10:53positive coming out of the White Sox so far.
- 10:57Yeah, Murakami has hit the ball, no question about it.
- 10:59But unfortunately, this team, in my opinion, I said this before
- 11:03the season, as the worst rotation in baseball, it really
- 11:07does. Now they've got three guys
- 11:08coming, Tanner McDougal, Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz, and
- 11:13those guys should be in their rotation.
- 11:15I don't know, July, August, maybe sooner, but you don't want
- 11:19to rush them. You want them to be ready.
- 11:22Not just available, but this rotation.
- 11:25Shane Smith, now this is 2 straight starts.
- 11:28It looked awful. Eric Fetty.
- 11:31He's Eric Fetty. His best days are past him.
- 11:35Davis Martin pitched OK in their one win.
- 11:37It's just not a very good team. It's not.
- 11:40They have very little thump in their lineup and they've got
- 11:43terrible, terrible starting pitching.
- 11:46They're in for a long year. Good friend of mine who does
- 11:49gambling for a living, that's his job, he said all over the
- 11:53under 67 1/2. So we'll see.
- 11:57Not music to Ken's ears, that is for sure, after what he invested
- 12:02in before the season. Over to some basketball with
- 12:04you, Kathy and Billy Donovan. He remains in the predictive
- 12:08market, still the betting favorite to get the North
- 12:10Carolina job. We'll see Tommy Lloyd whenever
- 12:12Arizona season collides if that changes that.
- 12:15What are you hearing in Chicago about Billy Donovan may be
- 12:18returning to the college game at Carolina?
- 12:20I don't think that happens that in fact, The funny thing is I
- 12:24had gotten a call from someone who is very close to a form to a
- 12:29current board of trustees member at Carolina.
- 12:32And I reached out to Billy Donovan, who I've known since
- 12:361992. And I was told, hey, Billy's on
- 12:39the court with the team at shoot around.
- 12:42He said to tell you he's not going anywhere till the end of
- 12:46the season. And then he wants to meet, which
- 12:47he said publicly, I want to meet with Jerry and Michael
- 12:50Reinstorp. But he said tell Cap if I leave,
- 12:53he's coaching. The last six games that was.
- 12:57Good stuff, captain to football. I'm sure you saw Roger Goodell's
- 13:01remarks yesterday at the owners meetings in Phoenix when he was
- 13:04asked about the Bears and he didn't give them an ultimatum.
- 13:07But I thought he was pretty clear that he would like to see
- 13:10a resolution sooner rather than later regarding where the Bears
- 13:14are going to call home. How big of a talker was that in
- 13:17Chicago today? And does that, you know, speed
- 13:20the process up at all? I wouldn't say it was a huge
- 13:24talker because people are sick of hearing about the stadium.
- 13:28They, they're literally people are tired of it.
- 13:30They, they're whatever, they don't care.
- 13:32They just want to know where they're going to be.
- 13:34I still believe they're going to be in Arlington Heights.
- 13:36And if they don't, shame on the politicians in this state
- 13:40because Indiana has got a deal on the table for him.
- 13:44Do I think the Bears want to be in Indiana?
- 13:46No. I think they'd rather play in
- 13:48the parking lot of my YouTube studio than go to Indiana.
- 13:52But Arlington Heights, 326 acres, I still believe that's
- 13:56where they'll be. Interesting cap Illinois fans
- 14:02like I anticipated and got to know a few of them in Champaign
- 14:06of different trips I've taken over there.
- 14:09We ask all the time college sports.
- 14:10We know it doesn't matter in Chicago, IL though is in the
- 14:13final Four. Has it created anything at all,
- 14:16any kind of buzz up there in Chicago land?
- 14:19Other than us mentioning Dan Hurley getting into it with the
- 14:23official and the drama of the shot the other day and we gave
- 14:27out the point spread, we have not talked one second of
- 14:30Illinois basketball this. Week.
- 14:31Isn't that something? What did you think of the the
- 14:34head bump in in with Hurley? What did you make of it Gap?
- 14:38It's nothing. I had no problem with it because
- 14:41Rodger airs that official and Dan have a great relationship.
- 14:45Does that comfort you that that his best friend is the official
- 14:49on the side for a game to go to the Final Four?
- 14:51Friends, but they have a very good relationship for many, many
- 14:54years. And Danny was just having fun
- 14:57with him. Yeah.
- 14:58No, there, there was nothing. I don't think there was anything
- 15:01malicious behind. I just thought, you know, we've
- 15:03never seen this before. If a player would have done it.
- 15:07I don't I you know what? I'm glad, cap, at the end of the
- 15:09day, I'm glad that there was no T call because Can you imagine
- 15:13that being a deciding moment in a for a for a team to go or Oh
- 15:17my God, Can you imagine? Oh God, that would that would
- 15:20not have happened. Yeah, I don't know good stuff.
- 15:23Anything else? TC Well, I mean, Illinois beat
- 15:25high. Illinois blow up wins by 7 or
- 15:28more over you can. They do.
- 15:30OK. Do they win the national
- 15:31championship? No.
- 15:34What would you say? Lose in the championship game
- 15:37yet again. What would you say to a guy
- 15:39who's got an 80 to 1 ticket on Illinois to win the national
- 15:42championship? What would you recommend he
- 15:44does? I would tell him to have a
- 15:47ticket booked for Saturday night or Sunday morning to Vegas.
- 15:51And I would tell him if Illinois advances, make sure you've got I
- 15:56don't know how much the tickets worth.
- 15:57How much did he bet on it? He's got $1200 coming his way
- 16:01$13.12. 100 that's a different 1.
- 16:04He can just hedge that. I know a guy who has $2500 at 30
- 16:10to 1. He bet in November and so he's
- 16:14got what, 70, some 1000 coming his way.
- 16:17He's literally flying to Vegas after the game on Saturday if
- 16:20they win and he's going to hedge his bet and bet the other way
- 16:24and try and what's called middle it because they're going to be
- 16:27the underdog in the game if they get there.
- 16:31He's going to take the points with Illinois and if they don't
- 16:35cover, he wins that, excuse me, he's going to lay the points
- 16:39with the other team. I think it's how he laid it out.
- 16:42So if Illinois wins, he hits, and if the other team wins, he
- 16:46hits. And the chance, the way he's
- 16:48going to do it and with the point, he's going to be able to
- 16:51find a way where Illinois covers but doesn't win.
- 16:55He would be able to hit both ends of his bat.
- 16:58He must be betting the other team on the money.
- 16:59Line. Yep.
- 17:00Well, I bought my ticket at the end of September, just so you
- 17:03know who that person is. Good stuff. 80 to 180 to one for
- 17:07the phone call, yeah. Well, I bet a lot of them,
- 17:09Kappa. You should see the final losers.
- 17:13Good stuff, Kappa. Thank you, pal.
- 17:14Appreciate it as always. I talked to you in a week's
- 17:17time. Thank you, David Kaplan, great
- 17:18day. Yep, you do the same, pal.
- 17:19Good to talk to you, David Kaplan, as we check in on
- 17:22Chicago sports with Kappa. I got marquee on here as oh
- 17:26what? Channel is it?
- 17:27What am I watching? I'll have to look up what the
- 17:29number is here with our studio TV's but cold.
- 17:32Obviously. Oh yeah.
- 17:33Boy, it doesn't have sleeves on either.
- 17:35He's he's sleeveless out there. Trent, are you concerned about
- 17:37him? Yeah.
- 17:38When it goes back to the World Baseball Classic, he was not
- 17:40sharp and that, in fact, I don't remember who they were playing
- 17:43the night that they watched him. By the way, I think the
- 17:45tournament started right after that.
- 17:47We really never got into it. People watched that.
- 17:49Tournament. Yes, they did.
- 17:50They loved it. So huge momentum for for
- 17:53baseball in the month of March, which was great to see.
- 17:55Yes, the answer is yes. Matthew Boyd was unbelievable
- 17:59last year. He can't duplicate that.
- 18:01Well, he's never done that in his career, right?
- 18:03Right, anything close to what he was a year ago, you know it, it
- 18:07feels like like it's one start. We'll see.
- 18:11This is an Angels line up. It's OK at the top, but not a
- 18:15whole lot of depth to it. And they go lefty, lefty because
- 18:18Imenaga and Imenaga was not good in his start either.
- 18:20Horton was great, Horton great, Italian was good.
- 18:23He was good, yeah. He's 5th starter.
- 18:25He's what you know. As expected, Cabrera was really
- 18:29good on Monday. In terms of Ross stuff, the best
- 18:31two guys are the young guys, yes, I mean Horton Cabrera,
- 18:34Yeah, Ross stuff is completely different than everybody else in
- 18:37that staff. Yep.
- 18:38I just that first start for and one start, I know it was opening
- 18:44day. They're even getting the ball on
- 18:45opening day. OK.
- 18:48Yeah, really. All right, we'll take a time
- 18:50out. Rob Doster is neck.
- 18:52When are they getting to Indianapolis, do you know?
- 18:54I don't know offhand, I wouldn't be surprised if they're already
- 18:58there. Though have you seen some of the
- 18:59ticket prices to get in for lower bowl?
- 19:01Just crazy money. Super Bowl type money.
- 19:05Oh, absolutely, because might have been looking.
- 19:09Oh, prior to? Yeah, just in case.
- 19:11Yes though so do you know what the get in prices like or?
- 19:15Lower bowls, like 5 grand, yes, you can sit in the corner behind
- 19:20the basket. They technically call it lower
- 19:22bowl, but it's right at the top of it.
- 19:24It's it was 1500 I think. So you can get lowers for that.
- 19:28But man, there's some expense if you want to sit anywhere
- 19:30courtside, not courtside, but you know, and not behind the
- 19:33basket. You're paying through the nose.
- 19:35I see like there's a super deal. This is on game time, the game
- 19:38time app row 127, row E or behind the basket lower bowl
- 19:43$2300 just to get in 800 bucks. Now those are upper upper
- 19:51uppers. Yeah, upper upper upper.
- 19:53Yeah, that's also Nosebleed, yes, but that's for both Monday
- 19:57night and that just a single session on Saturday though still
- 20:00the get in price 739, just get in.
- 20:03Where would you have spent it for a Final Four to see your
- 20:06squad? Yeah, I think you would have
- 20:08too. Yeah.
- 20:10Credit cards, yeah, right. Hopefully interest rates don't
- 20:14rise up on that one, but get in the building and figure it out.
- 20:18I would have no. I also might have begged my way
- 20:20and tried to get a media pass also and tried to go that.
- 20:22Direction Well, the fact that you had one for the Sweet 16
- 20:26game probably gives you no, you had you didn't have Sweet 16.
- 20:29You had a real 88. So, but still you had one down
- 20:32the stretch so so it might have. And I was given a Final Four
- 20:37pass. It was right when we were
- 20:39starting here up in Minneapolis. Minneapolis, Yeah, Yep.
- 20:42Just to cover it. Absolutely incredible to be
- 20:45there even though it was Texas Tech and Virginia.
- 20:48It's a hell of a game though. It was a great game and a great
- 20:51final four. Is McCausland next on the list
- 20:54of Donovan? Or Donovan says no, Lloyd says
- 20:59no. That's what the betting market
- 21:01is it? I think it was he was.
- 21:03They've taken TJ off the betting markets.
- 21:05No, he's still on there. Yeah, he's still like the sixth
- 21:07choice. Is he really?
- 21:08Yeah. Is McCollum still on there?
- 21:09He's not, at least the list that I saw from it was an offshore
- 21:12bet online. He's the one that I saw the
- 21:14other day. But yeah, he was not.
- 21:16I think they had 10 guys listed. Byington and Vanderbilt.
- 21:19He was up there, too. I think he was in the top five.
- 21:22That was another name that jumped out there.
- 21:25What do you do if you're North Carolina?
- 21:27This is one of the bluest of blue bloods.
- 21:30They got Michael Jordan making calls on your behalf.
- 21:32But. What if, and we've seen this
- 21:34happen so often, guys just keep saying no, it's not like it was
- 21:40in the old days. There are a lot of good jobs out
- 21:42there and the ACC does not have the same financial backing as
- 21:46the other conferences. It's not the SEC and it's not
- 21:50the Big 10. That's a different level.
- 21:51You're right. You're 100% right.
- 21:53Even at a blue blood different world we're living in.
- 21:55No, it is Doster next. 125 Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 21:59Sports Radio Network. All right, 130 Miller and
- 22:05Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:08Still to come, Transplays of the day.
- 22:10Circus sports, they sponsor that.
- 22:12And there is basketball action tonight.
- 22:14The crown is underway in Las Vegas.
- 22:18Guessing Rob Doster won't be at that event and his team at the
- 22:21field of 68. They'll be in Indianapolis.
- 22:23It is the final four. Rob Trenton, Ken, thanks once
- 22:26again for giving us a few minutes.
- 22:28Greatly appreciated. Let's let's go back to the Duke
- 22:32or UConn game, if you don't mind just the just the an incredible
- 22:37ending when seemingly Duke had I don't know what the win
- 22:40probability was. Had to be 99 something I would
- 22:43think, only to be foiled by UConn in that unbelievable shot.
- 22:48You see everything when you keep if you watch enough sports,
- 22:51you'll see it at once. And this is one of those games.
- 22:54Never seen it before, but what a finish.
- 22:56How about that? Yeah, it was it was special,
- 22:59man. It was one of those all time
- 23:00sports moments. We're going to be watching that
- 23:02highlight for the next 50 years. Anytime people are talking about
- 23:06the greatest March Madness moments, greatest sports moments
- 23:09is going to be up there with like Christian Leitner and Chris
- 23:12Jenkins and shots like that. But I'll tell you, so much is
- 23:15made of and it's actually frustrating me a little bit.
- 23:18So much has been made of that last play by Kaden Boozer, the
- 23:21turnover and like that was the only reason that Duke lost that
- 23:26game and they blew a 19 point lead.
- 23:28They're up by 17 in the second-half.
- 23:29And the fact that everything has kind of been put on that play in
- 23:33that moment has been. But did anybody else like watch
- 23:36the game or did everyone turn it off at halftime and then wait
- 23:38until they got a notification on the phone?
- 23:41They said like, oh, you got a close game alert here with Duke
- 23:44and Yukon. So it's that part of it's been
- 23:47been frustrating. But I'll tell you what, man,
- 23:48they the ratings, the the people paying attention to the
- 23:51viewership that we're getting in college basketball couldn't be
- 23:53in a better place right now. Well, as we're taking a peek
- 23:56back, I'd love to get your perspective on Iowa.
- 23:59Listen to your guys's podcast after things wrapped up in the
- 24:02Sweet 16 victory. Had the lead with eight minutes
- 24:05to play against the Illini halftime lead.
- 24:07But alas, too big, too tough inside.
- 24:09As Illinois moves on to the Final Four.
- 24:11Your thoughts on Ben Mccollum's group, this run through the NCAA
- 24:15tournament and kind of the future as you look at Iowa
- 24:17basketball? I mean, a hell of a run, man.
- 24:19Like it was, you know, you get to the Elite 8 as a nine seat,
- 24:23you knock off the reigning national champion.
- 24:25Like that's nothing to be ashamed of.
- 24:27And we're in an era now where the top of the sport, the top
- 24:325681012 teams, whatever it ends up being, are going to be
- 24:36separating themselves because of the way that Nio kind of works.
- 24:38And the fact that you're able to knock off one of them and get
- 24:41yourself to a point where you know what, like a couple
- 24:44possessions away from, you know, landings in the final four in
- 24:49Indianapolis is, is really impressive.
- 24:51My big question now with Iowa and with Ben is 1.
- 24:56What are you as a coach when you don't have Bennett Sturtz,
- 24:58right? And we've seen him one of the
- 24:59division two level, but that's very different than winning at
- 25:02Division One level or in the big 10.
- 25:04And then two, how do you navigate the portal when you're
- 25:07at this level? Because that's the one thing we
- 25:09haven't really seen him need to do.
- 25:12He's plugged a couple gaps. He's found a way to be able to
- 25:14build a round. Bennett, Sturtz and you know,
- 25:16obviously he got started as a transfer twice, but I think that
- 25:19one's a little bit, you know, that's that's a little skewed.
- 25:22That's not going to be happening every year.
- 25:23So how he finds a way to be able to navigate that I think is the
- 25:27key moving forward. We haven't seen him do that yet.
- 25:30When he's got players, you know, he can coach them up.
- 25:32The question is going to be, can he get those players?
- 25:35My guess is that he probably will be.
- 25:36Yeah. And I love the fact that he's
- 25:38been now he's been doing every national media hit that he
- 25:40possibly could do to try and sell his brand.
- 25:43I do want to ask you, North Carolina, they don't have a
- 25:45coach yet, which tells me that their coach that they want to
- 25:48get is still, he's still working.
- 25:49He's either in the college, he's either in Final Four or he's
- 25:52coaching the Bulls. How do you see North Carolina at
- 25:55this particular juncture? Oh man, it's a load of question.
- 26:01I think that at this point they're probably hoping that
- 26:04they can get Tommy Lloyd. I just don't know if that's a
- 26:08situation where Tommy would take it right like you, you got
- 26:11Arizona rolling. You got into a final four.
- 26:13You're the best team in this final four.
- 26:15You got a chance to be able to win a national championship.
- 26:18Is that something where you are you're going to leave even if
- 26:23you end up losing to to Michigan, if you get to the
- 26:26final four, Arizona, are you leaving first Final four in 25
- 26:29years for the program that you're at?
- 26:30Maybe you do. Maybe North Carolina is too much
- 26:33to turn down, but I, that's going to be a fascinating, you
- 26:38want to see how it plays out because the portal opens the day
- 26:40after the national championship game.
- 26:42You know, whoever's got that job is going to have to start
- 26:44working immediately. Billy Donovan's season doesn't
- 26:46end until April 12th. So would he end up taking the
- 26:50job and then kind of starting working that?
- 26:52Like you'd even be working from behind coming from the
- 26:54professional ranks. So I it seems like it would
- 26:59probably end up being Tommy Lowey because I don't know if
- 27:02Billy Donovan is the kind of guy that's going to say, oh, second
- 27:04field. Yeah, you know what, I'll come
- 27:06take the job now. So if it's not, and if it's not
- 27:09Tommy, then Mark Byington, is that going to be something that
- 27:12wins a press conference for you if you're if you're in North
- 27:15Carolina? I think that he went a lot of
- 27:16games. I think he'd be very good there.
- 27:18But that's, you know, that's, that's a far cry from getting
- 27:21yourself like a future Hall of Fame this week.
- 27:23Yeah, and if you're not going to get that, though, it's not about
- 27:26winning the press conference, it's finding the right guy in
- 27:28Byington. I'm with you.
- 27:29I think you'd win a ton there. Let's get into the games on
- 27:31Saturday starting at 5:00 Central time.
- 27:33God's time zone as Illinois faces off against UConn. 2 teams
- 27:38that we've seen some of the highest of highs this season,
- 27:41but also some head scratching moments out of both of these
- 27:44squads this year. What do you anticipate?
- 27:46How do you preview Illinois and UConn?
- 27:48Well, first and foremost, the game starting at six O 9 Eastern
- 27:51Time zone, legitimate time zone the I think that this game is
- 27:56going to come down to two specific matchups. 1 is going to
- 27:59be Alice caravan against David and Mirkovic.
- 28:03Will caravan be able to deal with the the physicality and the
- 28:06strength of Mirkovic and and you know, will he be able to chase
- 28:10caravan around all the screens and and all the actions that you
- 28:12come around? I mean, we all know what Yukon's
- 28:14offense is at this point, right? If you're having a six foot
- 28:16eight, £250 power forward having to chase a guy that can run off
- 28:20of threes and run off of curls and do all the stuff that
- 28:23caravan does, you got to you got to make sure that he can
- 28:26actually match up with that. So I think that's going to be a
- 28:28big part of it. And the other part, I think it's
- 28:30just as simple as what is stylist Emery healthy enough to
- 28:33be able to stop keeping walking? Because I think Demery is one of
- 28:37the better eyeball defenders that you're going to find in
- 28:39college basketball. Will he be able to slow down
- 28:42Walker, who is, you know, in theory the kind of player that
- 28:47would be able to be guarded by Demry?
- 28:50But like, sometimes guys like Wagler able to use the strength
- 28:54against someone like Demry. So we'll see.
- 28:57Man. I think that was going to be a
- 28:58fascinating match up. I do, too.
- 29:00I don't want to call it the main event.
- 29:01Kind of feels like it is Arizona and Michigan.
- 29:04They're playing unbelievable basketball.
- 29:06Someone has to win this game, Rob.
- 29:09I have no idea which of the two teams it's going to be.
- 29:11Have you figured it out? Oh no, not at all.
- 29:15I'm what I'm what I'm really interested to see.
- 29:18So you have arguably the best 2 point percentage defense team in
- 29:22in the country in Michigan going up against a team that wants to
- 29:25get into the paint and score, score at the rim as as much as
- 29:30anything to score in in Arizona. So it's almost kind of like you
- 29:32got strength on strength there. You got you got size on size.
- 29:36You got a bunch of physical dudes that get in there and just
- 29:38going to be beating on each other in the paint.
- 29:40So watching that match up with those front courts is going to
- 29:44be something else. And I will say, I think at the
- 29:47end of the day, when you have a game where it's kind of like a
- 29:51like a pick them almost where the teams are so evenly matched.
- 29:55I probably would leave with the team that has the best point
- 29:58guard, the Big 12 player of the year, who has been the best
- 30:00closer in college basketball this season.
- 30:03Pretty good place to start. One thing I pointed at that I
- 30:08think tilts me Michigan's way is on the sideline.
- 30:11Tommy Lloyd gets a bad rap from a lot of people and it's been
- 30:15flame outs in the NCAA tournament until this season.
- 30:17There's been other things that overall with the talent that has
- 30:20come through there, he leaves you wanting a little bit more.
- 30:23Do you see a gap between Dusty May and Tommy Lloyd on the
- 30:25sideline? Not really.
- 30:27I look and I love Dusty. May I love Tommy Lord.
- 30:31I think both those guys are very, very good at what they do.
- 30:33I think if I had to pick one of them, I think I'd probably go
- 30:38with Dusty just because he's been to a Final Four already.
- 30:41He's had that experience. And I think turning around
- 30:44Florida Atlantic the way he did and then turning around Michigan
- 30:46as quickly as he did from where it was under Jalon Howard has
- 30:49been impressive. But like, Tommy Lowe's been
- 30:52awesome, you know, he's, he hasn't had the greatest
- 30:55tournament success, but he's got a team in the fun for now.
- 30:58And if you remember, like we all, there's a while where we
- 31:02all thought that like Bill Self was going to be the guy that
- 31:05that couldn't do it. They couldn't win in March.
- 31:06And you know, he had two of the 8 exits and then he had two
- 31:10first round exits. And like, is this dude ever
- 31:11going to find a way to be able to get it done?
- 31:13And you know, he ends at Steph Curry streak, he gets the Final
- 31:15four, he wins the championship in 2008.
- 31:17And all of a sudden it becomes one of the best coaches that
- 31:19we've ever seen in college basketball.
- 31:20So you're always the best to never do it until you do it.
- 31:23Before we get field the 68 plans for a coverage of the final
- 31:27four, you mentioned Bill Self, are any clarity there regarding
- 31:31his future in Lawrence? I think the longer it goes, the
- 31:36more likely it is that he probably ends up coming back.
- 31:40You know, if he was retiring, I think that he would try to get
- 31:42out ahead of it just because, you know, he's he's probably
- 31:45already working on trying to get like a Tyron Stokes to commit
- 31:49and trying to get some of these transfers to come into the
- 31:51program. And the fact that he hasn't made
- 31:55an announcement yet leaves me to believe that it's probably
- 31:58trending towards him coming back.
- 32:00But you never know, man. I think that's one of those
- 32:02situations where it's going to be up to the doctors.
- 32:05Like where? Rob Doster, one final thing for
- 32:09me and that is back on the local front.
- 32:12Kyle Green takes over Iowa State assistant at you and I Ben
- 32:15Jacobson leaving though for the Utah State job which has been an
- 32:18excellent job certainly over this last decade, 7 out of the
- 32:21last NCAA tournaments. Your thoughts on Coach Jake
- 32:24leaving you and I at this point and Kyle Green leaving Iowa
- 32:27State to go back home and become the Panthers head coach.
- 32:32I never thought we'd see Ben Jacobson leave.
- 32:33It just felt like you got to this point.
- 32:35He was going to be there forever.
- 32:36But you know, Utah State is, is one of those jobs where you go,
- 32:40you win for two years and you get a high major gig out of it.
- 32:43And it was becoming clear that he wasn't be going to be able to
- 32:46get a high major gig out of Northern Iowa.
- 32:49So, you know, why not go take a chance?
- 32:52Living in Logan is beautiful. You know, you ever been out
- 32:54there? It's it's, it's a, it's a
- 32:56stunning part of the country. So I hope you and I fans are
- 33:01appreciative of kind of what he did there and what he built.
- 33:04So yeah, I think that it's it's a pretty good situation.
- 33:09Yeah, I don't, I do not see too many hard feelings, no doubt
- 33:11about that. What field is 68 plans?
- 33:15We're going to be live Tom's Watch Bar, 4:00 to 7:00 tonight,
- 33:1912:00 to 3:00 tomorrow, and then 2:00 to 5:00 on Friday.
- 33:22Hanging out, doing live shows, doing live streams, getting big
- 33:25guests on. So we we had a lot of stuff on
- 33:27the works. And you do get some big guests,
- 33:29no doubt about it. Check it out on X.
- 33:31Rob, thanks for giving us a few minutes.
- 33:32Appreciate the relationship. Rob Doster.
- 33:34Thank you bud. Thanks guys.

- 34:34There's another. There's like 20 of them across
- 34:36the country. There really are.
- 34:37So this is a franchise. Yes, yeah.
- 34:39Tom's Watch Bar. Now it was filled.
- 34:41It was the Illinois kind of official gathering spot.
- 34:44They had like the pom poms out and everything like that like
- 34:45that. So we were there the whole time
- 34:47by any means. But yeah, they're all across the
- 34:49country. Good place to watch games before
- 34:51the game, getting ready for it. Haven't been to the one in Indy
- 34:54I don't believe. But have you heard of bars?
- 34:57French, I mean restaurants happens all the time.
- 35:00I just. Well, I mean, it's, it's a
- 35:02sports bar, you know, it's Buffalo Wild Wings.
- 35:05You know, it's OK. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 35:07Food really good. And drinks.

- 36:28CB Buckner, who've you listen to the show.
- 36:30You know I can't stand as an umpire.
- 36:32He took one right in the face. Yeah, he is left the game.
- 36:36He was behind home plate and it was a foul ball at 100.2 miles
- 36:40an hour, came back and just knocked him right on his.
- 36:43You know what, I don't want to see that.
- 36:45I'm not cheering for the CB Buckner that way.
- 36:48I hate you, hate to see that, but so hopefully rooting.
- 36:51It's not serious, but he left the game.

- 37:13It was fun, yes. I could tell you guys we're
- 37:14having a good time there. It's.
- 37:15Good to every get everybody. Together.
- 37:17Well anyway, I thought it was perfect too.
- 37:19I mean, you were the quarterback, you're remaining
- 37:21the ship. Lucas is kind of asking me the
- 37:24analytical angle of things and kind of breaking down the
- 37:26matchup. Heather is asking me more about
- 37:28kind of the social aspect like because we all have so many
- 37:31different personalities and just you guys with your different
- 37:34personalities, the way that married, I thought a really good
- 37:36job. Went back and downloaded it and
- 37:38listened to it on the way back and you guys did a great job on
- 37:41that. And maybe some ideas for the?
- 37:42Future I probably wouldn't be a bit surprised.
- 37:45So some different things that we can do, but Friday afternoon,
- 37:48right after we went off the air, there was a huge story that
- 37:51happened in sports. On Friday afternoon.
- 37:53And we haven't touched it, Tiger.
- 37:55Oh yeah, my God. And.
- 37:57And for a while, and I probably should ask you off the air, but
- 38:00that's not how we do things. No.
- 38:02Why would we start now? Yes, absolutely.
- 38:03This is, this is how we do it and how we've done it for a long
- 38:06time together. I wondered if you were
- 38:10uncomfortable, disappointed. Disappointed, absolutely
- 38:14disappointed. This guy, what he meant for the
- 38:18sport, right? They'll they'll never be, in my
- 38:21opinion, they'll be never any be.
- 38:23Anybody can come close to his legacy on the golf course.
- 38:27He was his. I love greatness.
- 38:29And we were watching greatness every time he put AT in the
- 38:31ground and specifically on Sundays when he wore the red
- 38:34shirt, polo shirt, right. But what he's doing to himself
- 38:37and more importantly, I mean, he's been lucky.
- 38:39Hey, he's been lucky. He's walked away.
- 38:41But he's been really lucky that nobody else has been involved
- 38:44with his, with his carelessness, quite frankly.
- 38:48Why doesn't he have a driver? He's a billionaire.
- 38:51Why is he driving around? He came out and said God it,
- 38:55it's a privacy issue. Please.
- 38:57You don't think he signed NDA's? Didn't all of those women that
- 39:00he was with have to sign an NDA at some point?
- 39:02He's probably got an NDA attorney on speed dial.
- 39:05What is he doing to himself, to his legacy and how we and how we
- 39:10view one of the greatest athletes of our generation?
- 39:14It is incredibly sad, the pictures, the the shot of him as
- 39:18he's getting a ride back after being charged there.
- 39:22And it's such that difficult part of we know physically what
- 39:26he has gone through, the medication part.
- 39:29And we know how that has become a bigger and bigger issue.
- 39:32And not just in our country, worldwide of the addiction that
- 39:35can happen because of that. But for a guy of his stature,
- 39:39that's still, yes, there I'm sure is pain management somehow,
- 39:42some way that has to happen just to give him an opportunity to
- 39:45entertain us to get back out there, to walk hopefully 36
- 39:49holes at Augusta and be able to to get to the weekend at
- 39:52minimum, because that's a realistic baseline.
- 39:54And just for our own enjoyment. I know that there is certainly
- 39:58things that have to be done because of the toll that his
- 40:01body is taken physically. But to have this happen again,
- 40:04you said driving behind it, the addiction part.
- 40:09And he's got kids now and he's got kids with a future.
- 40:12His daughter's in college, right?
- 40:14I'm somebody that myself, my dad was going through an addiction
- 40:18problem when I was in college. It was awful, absolutely brutal.
- 40:21And my heart ached, not for Tiger, but for the kids, for
- 40:25Charlie and what he is going through as this budding baby
- 40:28star. Golf.
- 40:30And then you got dad battling addiction and what that has to
- 40:36do. We know the mental part this
- 40:38weekend, Gary Woodland. If there wasn't Elite Eight
- 40:40games going on, I mean, that should have been.
- 40:42You know what I did? I'm so glad you brought him up.
- 40:44But we will next week with Matt Rudy.
- 40:45What, what a win. What a what a win for humanity.
- 40:48Yes, right. More than just a golf tournament
- 40:51battling demons. To come back and then to have
- 40:56just being lost on the course and being able to overcome it
- 40:59and then lap the field and and be up five strokes at the end
- 41:02and the emotion and everything with it.
- 41:04And those are the stories that we love.
- 41:07The mental part of golf. It's not just about putting a
- 41:09peg in the ground. And I'm talented and I'm going
- 41:10to do it. There's the mental aspect is so
- 41:13huge in that sport. Incredibly sad, disappointing.
- 41:16And I really, I feel bad for the kids.
- 41:18I don't feel bad for Tiger. He's he's made this bad.
- 41:21How many? Chances does he need?
- 41:23There has been plenty of opportunities and there's been
- 41:25plenty of different addictions that have inflicted.
- 41:28Him and this wasn't drunk driving.
- 41:29This was pills. It's opioids, Yes.
- 41:32What'd they find in his pocket? 2 hydrocodone pills, I think it
- 41:35was. Yeah, just completely out of it.
- 41:37And you see those pictures. My good God.
- 41:40Let's make some bets and end on a wagering note.
- 41:43But yeah, I'm glad you reminded me of you about the situation.
- 41:47And next week we have our guy Matt Rudy.
- 41:49I'm guessing it'll come up as well.
- 41:50Yeah, no doubt we're making a bet.
- 41:53A bet. I already have one in the books,
- 41:56but the game's already started. And how's it going for you?
- 41:59We're scoreless. It's the Cubs, Angels.
- 42:02Who'd you take? I took the Angels.
- 42:03It was the Matthew Boyd conversation that we had
- 42:05earlier. Getting plus 143 at Circa.
- 42:09You look at some of the big shops, you would have got plus
- 42:11130 + 143 at Circa. Again, betting baseball.
- 42:15Which is tough enough to do day after day.
- 42:18It's a grind and if you want to eke out a profit.
- 42:21Get the best price. And Circa Sports has that,
- 42:23certainly in baseball more times than.
- 42:25And GG's a good one too. Yes, the other one.
- 42:29I am going to play the crown tonight.
- 42:30Good. I'm playing the Big 12, Big 10
- 42:33battle. You're oh, the late.
- 42:36Game, the late game 930 tip off perfect for me.
- 42:40Kids will be in bed. Oh, yeah.
- 42:42Just going to watch a little hoops tonight.
- 42:44Give me the Gophers plus the four against Baylor.
- 42:49All right, you don't seem sold. No, I'm OK with it.
- 42:52I'm I'm going to watch it. I'm absolutely going to watch
- 42:55it. What time is the Oklahoma
- 42:58Colorado game does it go? First it does that is 7:00. 7:00
- 43:03and that's a big number. All right, that's going to do
- 43:05it. Coming up next off the bench,
- 43:07Lucas and Sean take you until 5:00.
- 43:08We're Miller and Condon. Trent and I talk sports with you
- 43:11Monday through Friday, noon to two, here on the Iowa Sports
- 43:15Radio Network.
