- 0:04Shining at the end of every day.
- 0:08This is a great, big, beautiful tomorrow.
- 0:12Just a dream of the way.
- 0:15Hello, and welcome to Of Mice and Main Street Men.
- 0:18I am Tristan.
- 0:20And I am Sean.
- 0:21Oh, Mr.
- 0:22McCall.
- 0:24This is the podcast episode everybody's been waiting for.
- 0:35I know you need to make apologies to a couple of guests who we've talked to about their episodes that were supposed to maybe air this week.
- 0:45But man, when it you gotta learn in the news business, you know, any famous newscaster will tell you sometimes you get bumped because the breaking news is is just it's breaking.
- 0:58It is.
- 0:59And so I'm gonna make this public apology to Tia.
- 1:02Your episode will be on next week.
- 1:04And Kimberly, I'm sorry you have to wait one more week for that episode.
- 1:08But this uh But this one couldn't wait.
- 1:12In my I I am the one that wrote to Tristan and went.
- 1:14I I think we need to do this episode.
- 1:17Yeah, so if you're if you're listening to this show, you've probably already heard.
- 1:21And if you haven't, what rock are you under?
- 1:23But Disney has announced that the Carousella Progress is going to close on July 6th temporarily, so it can be completely overhauled and reimagined before opening in 2027.
- 1:34Now, we all knew that a closure was coming eventually because they were going to be adding Walt Disney to the beginning of it.
- 1:41We knew that.
- 1:42Right.
- 1:44But uh this isn't a small refresh, it's a major, major update.
- 1:50Right.
- 1:51Yes, and and I yeah, because I mean, yeah, we got we got this Walt figure announcement last year at Destination D23, correct?
- 2:02Yeah, yeah, they made it, and it was like, oh, well, that's gonna be nice that you know Walt will now be in both parks, and how appropriate that he introduced the carousella progress.
- 2:12But what was this?
- 2:14A random like Thursday, they suddenly like announced to the world that the whole attraction is getting rebooted.
- 2:21Yeah, yeah.
- 2:22They and it was such a random announcement because I when I first saw the headline, I was like, oh, they must have finally decided the dates on the refurbishment, you know.
- 2:30Okay, great.
- 2:31I just wanted to make sure I it wasn't while I was there, and then I kept reading and I was like, hold on a second.
- 2:37You're uh I mean, all of the show scenes are set in different decades now, the 60s, the 80s, the early two, you know, uh YQK essentially, and then a vision of the future.
- 2:48Future, right?
- 2:50Um, yeah, so yeah, so I mean because I will say when I saw it, I was like, what what the what the what what the what?
- 2:57Yeah.
- 2:58Um but I mean, how how what were what things went through your mind first?
- 3:04Well, so I did a video on this and I did post it on our socials.
- 3:08You can kind of go watch me walk around talking about it because I did go through various stages of kind of like grief on it, but right I so I went back and reread that article a few times.
- 3:23So and uh I understand, and we'll go through maybe the details of that in a second, but um what I had to go back to, because I I was uh I'm not anti-change, I don't want to say that, but because the ride is so personal, and for many of us, carousel of progress isn't just an attraction, it's a nostalgia and memory machine.
- 3:52It's kind of like I'm trying to like I have this, you know, we talked about my grandmother who comes to me in my dreams sometimes.
- 3:59It's kind of like that.
- 4:00It's like it's something familiar, and it's just going to be gone.
- 4:07Like the the classic decades that we have been so used to, uh there's just such a sense of loss that comes from that.
- 4:16And it's weird because it's it's kind of like you know, with country bears, something that we loved was no longer going to be, you know, the same.
- 4:25So it's no longer like ours the way it was, if that makes sense.
- 4:29And so it does that sadness was very real.
- 4:33But what I kept coming back to was that the reminder that what Carousella progress is, and I mentioned this in the video, but it's what it was always going to be because when Walt created it, he didn't design it to be a museum piece, you know.
- 4:49He right he designed it to be a a celebration of change, you know, uh that moves and like literally rotates around a family in real time.
- 4:58And because uh in a lot of reflecting I have done on this is Walt saw progress not as like static, but as like a dynamic and always turning and always evolving thing.
- 5:11And you know, the idea carousel, hence the carousel, hence the carousel evolves, yes.
- 5:19And the thing is, the the the idea was so radical in '64, and I think if Walt, you know, uh were still around, which he wouldn't, he'd be so old.
- 5:29But at this point, maybe you never know.
- 5:31But like I think he would be like, why haven't you changed this yet?
- 5:35What are we doing with this?
- 5:36Like, so I always had to go back to that and be like, he would it's I love that it's a museum piece, but it was never meant to be that.
- 5:44And I mean, the song, even which they're keeping, which I was so thrilled to read that, by the way.
- 5:48Um it's it's not nostalgic for the past, it's forward-looking, and that's what the song is.
- 5:54It's a forward-looking anthem.
- 5:56So I well, you know, I've been saying in the way that the carousel itself is progress in motion and it's supposed to be.
- 6:04You know, that's the thing.
- 6:06Like, I can't, I have to like keep coming back to.
- 6:08So and I I am glad that you are able to put that perspective on it.
- 6:13Because as I who who would I the carousel of progress has always been a part of I honestly, it's always been a part of my Disney World.
- 6:21I mean, they transferred it from Disneyland when they opened Disney World, going, okay, well, and I mean at that point, you know, it had been built for the 64 World's Fair.
- 6:32When did it get brought to Disneyland? '75.
- 6:37Oh, 75.
- 6:38It came to World.
- 6:39Yes, came to World in 75.
- 6:42Okay.
- 6:42Um, so, and I don't think I went to Disneyland.
- 6:46No, I did not go to Disneyland before that.
- 6:48So my first exposure to it was in Disney World, probably in like 75 or 76, somewhere around that time period.
- 6:59And, you know, at that point, it was only, you know, a little over 10 years old.
- 7:04And at that, I think when they brought it, I don't know when they brought it to Florida, if they made any changes or not.
- 7:09Somebody out there probably does.
- 7:11Well, for oh, the change I know they made, which was so bizarre.
- 7:16But as a kid, and even today, when I was going around thinking about the carousel of progress, I was humming, now is the time.
- 7:25Now is the best time.
- 7:26Yes.
- 7:26And now is the best time.
- 7:27Now is the best time of our lives.
- 7:29Life is a prize, win every minute.
- 7:30Open your eye.
- 7:31No.
- 7:31Open your life is a prize.
- 7:34See how somebody will correct me.
- 7:38Open your eyes and watch how you win it.
- 7:40That's the rhyme.
- 7:41Yesterday's memories may sparkle and gleam.
- 7:43Tomorrow's still but a dream.
- 7:44But right here and now you're on your way, the world's forward marching, and you're in the parade.
- 7:48Um, but I mean, it's so clearly that's stuck in my head because that was the tune for many, many years.
- 7:55And then when I guess was it GE that fell off as the sponsor, and they did some updating to the final scene, you know, I feel like I've had three final scenes in my life.
- 8:07One that was kind of where we were in time in the 70s, maybe they'd update well, because so when it opened at the fair in '64, the final scene was what?
- 8:21The 70s?
- 8:22Did it look forward?
- 8:24I'm trying to find out.
- 8:26I think it did.
- 8:27I really think it did.
- 8:28I think it was I think it was looking forward.
- 8:32Um, I don't think it was just the 60s going here's where we are today.
- 8:36But I'm not so I'm not sure.
- 8:38But I'm not positive of that.
- 8:40It's just I remember as a kid then that just got older and more dated.
- 8:46It's like things they were talking about, it's like that's either happened and failed, or you know, it's just, you know, by the time we got into the 80s and certainly the 90s, it's I I would be curious to to know when did they first change that final scene.
- 9:05Yeah, I because I'm not I'm not sure, but one thought I always had with it, and you know, this has helped me kind of like come to terms a little bit, is like it always felt weird to have that jump, you know.
- 9:19Well the jump just kept getting bigger and bigger because the future keeps changing.
- 9:24And it made perfect sense in 1964.
- 9:26You had like turn of the cent 1900s, you had the 1920s, you had the 1940s, and you had the 1960s-ish.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:35So, you know, 20 years apart, that seems that seems great.
- 9:40And then, you know, today you've got 20, you know, 10s, 20s, 40s, and then it jumps 70 years into the future.
- 9:52And it's like, this don't feel right, honestly.
- 9:55And to hear you, you know, say it was not meant to be a museum piece, and it's it is right now, it is a it's a museum piece.
- 10:07Well, and like I I think there's a way you could have kept it as a museum.
- 10:11Like, we've talked about this before, if it would have gone 20s, 40s, 60, like and just stopped in like 64 at the you know, world's fair time.
- 10:18I think then it would have been.
- 10:20Which I did think they were gonna do as part of this.
- 10:23That's what I thought too.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25I thought that was.
- 10:25But I think I think you're right.
- 10:28I think as they looked at what Walt's vision for this was, it was to kind of start with a history that a lot of a lot of your audience is gonna remember.
- 10:39I mean, starting in 1969, I remember my parents sitting me in front of a TV to watch the moon landing.
- 10:47I was like tiny.
- 10:49But but I do have that core memory.
- 10:52Now, maybe it's the Mandela effect, but I we had a giant black and white TV.
- 10:58And so, you know, people who are, you know, in their 50s to, you know, 70s, 80s, they remember that.
- 11:10Like it's, you know, like it was kind of like it was yesterday, except it was whatever, 60 years ago.
- 11:17Um, and you know, so you've got an audience right now that's gonna remember that starting scene.
- 11:25And they're gonna be there with their kids and their grandparents who might not remember it, but you know, it can be the catalyst for discussion.
- 11:32It's like, do you remember the moon landing?
- 11:35And uh, you know, that idea, and then along will come the 80s, and along will come uh Y2K, and you know, and taking that final scene, it sounds like pretty deep into the future.
- 11:51Yeah, it sounds so I I agree with you, like, because I heard my parents talk about 69, and like, you know, I have friends that you know remember that as well.
- 12:01And like I grew up in the 80s, so I remember Halloween in the 80s, and then I remember, you know, the New Year's Eve of 99 to 2000 and what was gonna happen.
- 12:10And so, like, for me, I do see I'm like, oh, that's gonna like hit on a very different level.
- 12:17It's not going to be, I'm still gonna miss what it was, but I'm hopeful that you know, here's the here's what I keep saying.
- 12:26Like, it's so okay to be sad about this, of course, but it's still okay to be like hopeful.
- 12:31Like two things can be true at the same time and exist in the same space, right?
- 12:36And that's kind of where I'm at.
- 12:38Like, I did go through a phase where I was like, I love those scenes though.
- 12:42Like, I love that attraction so much.
- 12:45I mean, you know, and I, you know, I wrote it by myself on Christmas Eve, you know, like like I was the only one in the theater.
- 12:56And then you end it in the Christmas Eve scene where there's like torching the turkey at a thousand degrees.
- 13:02Exactly.
- 13:03Um, I I still think though, you know, what Disney does so well, and we're gonna talk about this too, is they're going to keep that heart of the attraction alive because I think they understand how important this is to be built.
- 13:16Now, I will say I've been checking wait time since they made this announcement.
- 13:19Yeah, that thing is still only five minutes.
- 13:21And I'm like, people, what are you doing?
- 13:23Um, it does a lot of people can load at one time.
- 13:26That's true, that's true, that's true.
- 13:29And it's like every time it rotates, in theory, you're you can put a new group of I don't know.
- 13:34What's it hold?
- 13:35Two, three hundred people?
- 13:37I don't even know how many three.
- 13:39I I just think it what's great about it though is this is going to ensure that it's relevant and again, and people it's it ensures it's like you know, viability, it will be there for a while.
- 13:52And I think you'll miss Mama Don't Whoop Little Buford, but you'll love try everything.
- 13:58Right.
- 13:58Yes, exactly.
- 13:59Well, and I keep coming back to the country bears of it all, too.
- 14:02And they did such a great job with that that you know, um well, I I did try to console you that day and go, just remember, we have to trust the imagineers because they they took what people loved about the country bears and paid some lovely homage and created something fresh.
- 14:22Correct.
- 14:23And so before we get into because we're doing some hope dictating here.
- 14:27Well, Notre Dame Mouse, is it what you called it, right?
- 14:30Uh Nostradamusing.
- 14:31We're gonna be Nostradaus and make some predictions.
- 14:34And so I want to go through just real quick.
- 14:38So act one is gonna be uh, well, the you get the Walt Disney opening, then it'll go into Act One, which is the summer of 69.
- 14:47Then uh Halloween.
- 14:52The night of the moon landing, yeah.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:54Um, and then Halloween night, 1985, I believe is the exact year, but which I will say seems pretty random within these other two things, but it does.
- 15:05I agree.
- 15:06You're like, what?
- 15:07We'll we'll talk about that probably when we get to our predictions because I have some things to say.
- 15:14I yeah, um, and then act three will be uh the family gears up to ring in the year 2000.
- 15:20Which yeah, let's talk about that idea too.
- 15:23Yeah, well, yeah, it's not necessarily my it's it I'm like that uh really that's kind of a dark that's kind of a dark tone that night, Disney.
- 15:31I mean, we were all pretty sure that the my dad got a great deal on our trip to Antarctica because everyone assumed that nothing would function computer-wise on January 1st.
- 15:41So me, I was watching the Billy Joel concert from Madison Square Garden.
- 15:45I wasn't there, I was in the Midwest, but they televised that and it was really awesome.
- 15:50Well, you were very trusting that television cameras would still work after midnight.
- 15:54And they did.
- 15:55They guess spoiler alert, nothing happened.
- 15:58Spoiler alert, it's all good, it's all fine.
- 16:02And then Act 4 will go into the possible future.
- 16:05Um like that where they are actually living on another planet, correct?
- 16:09I I guess like I think that's what was hinted in stuff I've read.
- 16:14They actually are are off planet by that point.
- 16:17That's what like because there's it deals with they specifically say helpful robots space travel and other imaginative innovations is what they have said.
- 16:27So well, and maybe they're trying to imagine so far in the future that stuff isn't outdated four years from now.
- 16:33That's what I'm guessing, but the way technology works now, oh my gosh, like it's it's true.
- 16:39Um, but okay, so let's kind of go through this a little bit.
- 16:44I have some thoughts.
- 16:46Uh so I did this a little.
- 16:49Let's just go.
- 16:50I I kind of didn't do this by decade necessarily.
- 16:52I just kind of did it.
- 16:54Well, we'll go by decade because I kind of the way I did this is kind of weird, but I had a lot of thoughts on it.
- 16:59So let's start in the well, and I do yeah, I do too.
- 17:02And mine are so okay.
- 17:03Well, mine actually does start with the moon landing.
- 17:06I predict that somehow they'll work in a reference because that the the the launch was is it the night of the launch or the night they walk on the moon?
- 17:16Do you remember in your reading?
- 17:18It just says we watches the historic moon landing, so it must be moon landing.
- 17:23So it's so it's the landing on the moon.
- 17:25But they did launch from Cape Canaveral.
- 17:28I mean, they it was the Kennedy Space Center at that point, but you know, it launched in Florida, and I'm gonna I just I I'm gonna have to bet that the Disney people maybe work in a reference to the idea that that's where there's gonna be a new Disney park like Disneyland in a couple of years and they should go.
- 17:47Oh, sure.
- 17:48Yeah, sure.
- 17:49I'm I'm hoping for a Disney World reference out of Florida.
- 17:55Maybe.
- 17:57I would I would bet because they were building, they were, were they building, they were building by that point, weren't they?
- 18:04Well, yeah, because I was like, when did they announce like what the project was?
- 18:08And I have to assume that was by 69 if it was gonna open in 71.
- 18:14We're basically just two years from opening.
- 18:16I don't know.
- 18:16Maybe I'm completely wrong here, and Disney's not that narcissistic, but um is that what you have for the 60s?
- 18:27Because I have one thought for that, but my Yeah, that was my only thing necessarily in the 60s.
- 18:33Okay, so something that I think is going to be a I'm stuck on this Robins from Mary Poppins thing because I think they're gonna put those outside the window.
- 18:47And I have a feeling it's gonna appear in every decade, but this it kind of evolves.
- 18:53So I think in the the 60s scene, well, first of all, I think in the the Walt Disney scene, I think they might appear outside of a window of his office or something like that.
- 19:02But then I think in the 60s scene, I think you're gonna see those same robins uh on, you know, uh in Pets a lot of robins.
- 19:11Well, to be clear that are they in every scene now?
- 19:15No, they're not, I don't think.
- 19:16They're just in the uh well, they might be.
- 19:20So this is just you creating a lot more work for the robins.
- 19:23Here's my here's my thought though on the robins.
- 19:26Because if you put the robins outside a window in like a tree in the 60s, in the 80s they can be like on a television antenna and then and then like a dish outside, and then like maybe in their own spacecraft in the future.
- 19:40I'm really going on a line here investigating.
- 19:43I'm willing to go with you that the robins will make an appearance, but I would put them, I would put them on Halloween night because we know we're gonna see the doorstep because I guess John's handing out candy.
- 19:55Oh, that's a great thought.
- 19:56Yes, okay.
- 19:56You've been told, I mean, we're gonna be partly outside that night anyway.
- 20:00Right.
- 20:01That would make a lot more sense.
- 20:03But I just think we're gonna get those robins because I think they're they're such good Disney lore that they are, and you're right, they should keep them in there somewhere, and that's the exactly the kind of thing they do, even if you're right, even if we start in Walt's office and they're just outside the window and they don't track with our family.
- 20:21Um I guess the only one I'll throw out randomly now because it doesn't necessarily tie into the 80s, but I do hope at some point someone mentions a rumpus room.
- 20:32Oh, me too.
- 20:33I so I have lots of thoughts on like I'm hoping they bring a lot of those things, you know, those like famous phrases into it.
- 20:41Um they uh yeah they've already said that cousin Orville will show up at Halloween, right?
- 20:47Yeah, Uncle Orville's gonna show up, and apparently the no privacy at all around here line is isn't he cousin Orville?
- 20:54I thought he was Uncle Orville.
- 20:56I'm pretty sure he was Uncle Orville.
- 20:58This is a major debate to be having with Tristan Tapscott.
- 21:02I'm almost positive it's Uncle Orville, right?
- 21:05Am I crazy?
- 21:06Hold on.
- 21:06Well, I'm now I'm kind of crazy.
- 21:08Maybe I'm crazy, which is uh well um so I I think we're gonna get yes, Uncle Orville original ooh, this is interesting.
- 21:20We are both correct.
- 21:22Uh it's Uncle Orville formerly known as Cousin Orville.
- 21:27Interesting.
- 21:29I was gonna what so at what point did they change that?
- 21:33Well, that's what I'm looking for because I'm Well, we had a discussion at one point because they don't like show him in the bathtub anymore.
- 21:41And it's like, is that because that's unseemly, or is that because a light burned out?
- 21:47All right, so he was a cousin Orville in the beginning.
- 21:52Let's see.
- 21:55Why won't they tell me a year?
- 21:59It is in real time.
- 22:00And what's interesting about it, it just says nobody's nobody has a date.
- 22:05They just said early on it was on oh okay, okay.
- 22:12Looks like Oh no, that doesn't tell me either.
- 22:16Because you can always trust the internet and what it tells you trust.
- 22:19Well, I know, and that's some of this.
- 22:20I'm like, that's absurd.
- 22:22Um you know what?
- 22:24I'm gonna come back to this.
- 22:25I'm gonna try to report back and do some more research.
- 22:28But it was cousin Orville, but it has been Uncle Orville for the last 15 years.
- 22:33Okay, but nobody tells me exactly why that happened.
- 22:37But all right, well, and and but apparently we at least know he will be there.
- 22:44Yeah, so he will be there, but I think you're gonna get some of that no privacy around here at all thing, you know.
- 22:49Right, exactly.
- 22:50And but now because here's another one, because the dog changes names throughout the decades, correct?
- 22:59Because there's rover, but there's also Queenie.
- 23:02Yes, or okay, but is do they always give the dog's name and is it different in each scene?
- 23:10Or is it like Rover twice and Queenie once?
- 23:13Am I remembering an old version of the ride with Cousin Orville and Uncle Orville?
- 23:17They're all rovers.
- 23:18I don't this is this has become very perplexing.
- 23:22Well, and that's just it.
- 23:23Like there's so many.
- 23:25So here's because I go, is the dog gonna have the same name throughout the decades?
- 23:31Okay, so here we go.
- 23:33So okay, so right now it's rover in all of the scenes, but it has been Buster, Sport, and Queenie throughout the years.
- 23:44Okay, I rem okay.
- 23:46Now I now okay, Buster and Sport and Queenie.
- 23:50I remembered Queenie, but now it's Rover every time.
- 23:53But they only mention it, I think that one time.
- 23:58That's interesting too.
- 24:01Well there's so much to know about I love this.
- 24:06Do I go?
- 24:06Are we always?
- 24:07I guess I guess since they it's now always rover, I would assume we can always have rover.
- 24:12And we'll always have it's John, right?
- 24:14John and Sarah and and Jimmy and uh I just saw it today.
- 24:21Is it Penny?
- 24:23Hold on.
- 24:24Now I'm the daughter.
- 24:25Yeah anyway.
- 24:28So and and here this is getting very esoteric, but uh oh Patricia Patricia came in.
- 24:37Well oh Patricia, Patty, yeah.
- 24:41Um because this is esoteric because I I are we assume I guess we're assuming that these are everyman characters, and we don't have to worry about this is like John the Third and Sarah the Third.
- 24:58Because how how would those offspring have married each other and had identical children every 20 years?
- 25:06Right.
- 25:07And they don't age, right?
- 25:09They're always the same age.
- 25:12Well, it's like generations of the same, like through it's such a weird, especially it's mainly like it wasn't as big of a deal until they did that like 70-year time jump, and then it would got weird.
- 25:21So I'll be curious to see how they handle that.
- 25:26Right.
- 25:26Well, I think I think grandma and grandpa will always be grandma and grandma.
- 25:30Oh, I also read what that grandpa's gonna fall asleep and grandma's gonna switch to wrestling, right?
- 25:37Yeah, yeah.
- 25:39I think that's in the 80s, maybe, but so I've I think this attraction is in good hands.
- 25:45I think they I think so.
- 25:47They know to keep some of the love there for for for those those fans like you who have been so devoted to this attraction for 40-50 years.
- 26:00Now, I have a thought on the song, and I want to run this by you because obviously Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, that's great.
- 26:08But do you think that for like Waltz scene, it'll be more of a like player piano version, and then as we get into the 60s, it'll have more of that like 60s sound, and then 80s will have like a synth, and then like 99 has like that midi.
- 26:25Do we think we're gonna go there with that song and like change it up?
- 26:28Well, I you know what I mean.
- 26:29I had this same I had the same thought today myself, and bec uh because I was like, well, first of all, in my head, I was like, it does you do get an oral shift, which is probably not a good band name.
- 26:44No, I think it's perfect, an aural, aural shift, not oral shift, that's different.
- 26:50We're talking about an aural a-u-r-l.
- 26:53Yes, you do get a shift an aural shift where Disney does that thing it does, where you start, you start the the the music can go over each other and you can hear both at the same time, but because it's playing at the same tempo and it's the same key and everything, but you go from one style to another.
- 27:13That happens currently, correct?
- 27:16Yes, and like the characters themselves start singing too.
- 27:19So they're gonna be able to do that.
- 27:21I feel like now is the time never changed, but I feel like uh Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow does have like a 20s feel to it and a 40s feel to it.
- 27:33I my thought today was that maybe in another loving nod, that leaving the leaving Walt in the 60s, I mean leaving the Walt and going into the 60s might actually be the Sherman Brothers recording.
- 27:51Oh, sure.
- 27:52The Sherman Brothers singing with them, yeah.
- 27:55And you know, and he was he had prepared this for the 1964 World's Fair.
- 27:59So that would sort of be contemporary.
- 28:02And then as you move from the 60s to the 80s, it gets a little techno 80s punk pop.
- 28:09And yeah, yeah.
- 28:11And you know, and Y2K.
- 28:13I mean, I do, I do think it would be cool if the song evolved.
- 28:19Yeah, I think it would be a really cool.
- 28:22I don't know, that could be really neat.
- 28:24And then maybe there's like a version that blends all of them at the finale.
- 28:27I don't know.
- 28:28I don't know.
- 28:29That just sounds like a cacophony of poop.
- 28:32Well, that's now that is a good band name.
- 28:34Cacophony of poop.
- 28:36Yeah, they're playing with shrimp mulch.
- 28:39Oh, god.
- 28:41Well, that's what you get when you eat shrimp mulch.
- 28:45Um, I've read about shrimp.
- 28:48Yeah, so I think we're in the 80s right now.
- 28:51I because you said everything you wanted to about the seven sixties, and then we moved on to the song.
- 28:55Yeah, sorry, yeah, we moved on a little bit.
- 28:57Um, yes, we're to the eighties.
- 29:01Um, I do think there needs to be well, and I guess it's gonna be on the well, okay.
- 29:06I'll save it for then.
- 29:07Yeah, so the 80s.
- 29:09So I looked up specifically, because Jackie was like, oh, what kind of like cool Disney Halloween costume is one of the kids gonna be wearing?
- 29:19Oh.
- 29:20Like the like the little boy.
- 29:21And I looked up today, and of course, we're before the Disney Renaissance.
- 29:27Yeah, yeah.
- 29:27And we're kind of because do you know what film got released in 1985?
- 29:33No, I don't, but I know the Renaissance didn't happen to the late 80s, but what was 85?
- 29:37The Black Cauldron.
- 29:40Oh so I don't know.
- 29:42Maybe their kids are gonna dress up as Henwen or Gurgy.
- 29:45I I don't think Disney, I don't think Disney wants to remind us of that period in its own history.
- 29:52No, not at all.
- 29:54Back to the Future also came out that year, but that that belongs to the property down the road.
- 30:01Like, oh, are they gonna Back to the Future at all?
- 30:04I can't do much with that.
- 30:05Um no.
- 30:07Um, so I don't know what I mean.
- 30:11It's gonna have to be like a classic Disney costume, I guess.
- 30:14It's not gonna be or I don't know, what else would a kid dress up as in the 80s?
- 30:19Well, because when I heard 80s, I was like, oh, well, if they go late 80s, that's the Disney Renaissance.
- 30:24Like that's Little Mermaid, you know what I mean?
- 30:26Like that was a big deal.
- 30:27It's it's 85.
- 30:33I could not really are you gonna talk about how you still have a Betamax, but it's harder to find tapes.
- 30:44Are you are you now?
- 30:46I did look, and the Game Boy, the Game Boy and uh the Walkman are certainly huge, you know, huge devices to have in the mid-80s.
- 30:59And I had both.
- 31:01Like the 80s, like people are super nostalgic for like that time period, right?
- 31:05Like the 80s and 90s right now, right?
- 31:08And it's so I have a feeling, and I wonder if they're gonna do a lot with the idea of communication where you know, just how those modes have changed over time, but then I think okay, in 80 well, because cell phones, even cell phones weren't really a thing at that point.
- 31:26No, not even not even at not even 99, really.
- 31:29Like you had a cordless phone, didn't you?
- 31:33Maybe the cordless phone in your house that was the big white thing with the antenna you could walk around, not tied to a land line.
- 31:41I don't know.
- 31:42We didn't even have that until like the mid-90s, but um, I don't know.
- 31:48Uh so yeah, 80s is that's perplexing me, but I think the design is gonna be great.
- 31:54Like I think they can capture a really cool, you know, verbal nostalgia for sure.
- 31:58Oh, and also what I started to say is I guess, and God bless them, that's absolutely true.
- 32:03I guess Sarah is gonna be mainly talking to us in the 80s, yes, which I I think is cool.
- 32:09Yeah, we no longer live in a misogynistic carousel.
- 32:14No, um, oh, I didn't mention which is a debatable band name.
- 32:18Well, that is a debatable band name.
- 32:20Um, something I did think about, and this is so weird, but you know how you know he's in the like that rocking chair.
- 32:27Are we gonna like see the evolution of rocking chairs where we start with a wood rocker, then we go to recliner style TV rock?
- 32:35You know what I'm talking about?
- 32:35Like your grandparents' parents might have had that, yeah.
- 32:38And then we go into a lazy boy in the 80s, and then like that would be that would be an interesting trajectory to take.
- 32:45I don't know.
- 32:46I might really be, I don't know.
- 32:48I don't know.
- 32:49So what do you what what else do you have in the 80s, or do you have anything else?
- 32:54Um I to I nothing specific because I do I think Jackie's right, you know, so it's Halloween, you're gonna have costumes.
- 33:04Who's dressed as what in the middle?
- 33:06Yeah, that's a really good thought.
- 33:07You know, is Sarah, has Sarah got her, you know, Jane Fonda workout outfit on with her headband and her leg warmers and 100% she does, yes.
- 33:19So I don't know.
- 33:21It will be fun.
- 33:24So then we move on to Y2K, which I said, I was like, well, it was certainly a pivotal moment, but man, everybody was worried that you know computers weren't gonna work anymore.
- 33:35Because if if you're young enough not to understand what that means, everybody thought that because computers had been developed in a time where they weren't necessarily as forward thinking, that when a computer went from 1999, which was like 99 to 00, that it would think it was like 1900.
- 33:53Yeah.
- 33:54Um and the and the web would crash, what web there was in 1999.
- 33:59I do remember how many checkbooks were no longer obsolete at that time.
- 34:04Uh because you they all had 19 and then a space, you know?
- 34:08Oh, right, right.
- 34:09It's like, did you did you not foresee that the years were coming that we're gonna have twos and zeros and not ones and nines?
- 34:16Right.
- 34:18It's very short-sighted.
- 34:19I do think in '99, though, they're gonna have a lot of opportunity to play with the dial up internet tones and like oh, yeah, the beep boop bees and you know what I mean.
- 34:30Like, there's a lot you can play with because it wasn't we weren't quite as connected, but we were getting to that point.
- 34:37But it was like inconvenience.
- 34:38Well, if you were so and what kind of cell phone was in the 99?
- 34:43Was that a flip phone?
- 34:45Not even, it was like that brick notebook phone.
- 34:49You know, like it had the antenna, you know what I'm talking about?
- 34:51It's like the tan one, it had the antenna.
- 34:54Yeah, it had a blue one.
- 34:55I had I had one of those.
- 34:57So, like we're not and texting required you to like punch in the letter based on the telephone keypad of was it the and capital or not capital?
- 35:08Yeah, it was like it was like such a pain to text and nobody did it.
- 35:12And yeah, why would you?
- 35:14We just texting.
- 35:15We were like on the verge of like connectivity, but not quite there.
- 35:20Yeah.
- 35:20Um, and fashion was certainly questionable, although go, although most of that fashion is coming back now.
- 35:25Uh, which is upsetting.
- 35:27Everything's on a basically 20-year cycle.
- 35:30Everything is, yeah.
- 35:31Um 20, 30 years, it'll be cool again.
- 35:34I still think like the cool thing about them doing some of these decades is like, uh yes, I'll miss the 20s, 40s, whatever.
- 35:41They're gonna be able to do some really cool looking things because these are very specific time periods that everything had a very specific look.
- 35:50So thank God it's not like now where everything is just gray and white.
- 35:54There's actually some like you know, there's some texture going on in these decades.
- 36:00What else do you got for 90, like 99 then?
- 36:03I I don't really.
- 36:04I think we've sort of covered it.
- 36:06I mean, I do hope there's an oven joke somewhere, but that's probably in the final scene of but the AI will know we'll be too smart to misunderstand.
- 36:17It's like, right?
- 36:19Yeah, but by then your smart appliance will actually be too smart, and it wouldn't it would be like that would that would create a fire if you want me to set it to a thousand degrees and I won't.
- 36:32Right.
- 36:33Um, I do think, and I I want to get your thought on this, and I don't know if this would happen in this particular decade or if it would happen in the future.
- 36:43But do you think because Disney's gonna be in that first thing?
- 36:46Do you think probably you know, probably in the future?
- 36:49Now I think I'm I'm talking I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 36:51What do you have for the future?
- 36:52Let's discuss this particular thing because I don't really necessarily have any specifics other than I wanted an oven joke.
- 37:00And now I'm going, is it gonna be so meta that humanity has died out and AI has just created animatronics of humans to keep itself entertained?
- 37:13Or are we going full on wally here?
- 37:15You know what I mean?
- 37:15Like right.
- 37:16And I don't think that's I don't think that's the message we're sending.
- 37:19I think we're sending the fact that humankind and computers have gotten along swimmingly.
- 37:25And I I do think that in all these decades there's gonna be little Easter eggs of like, you know, there'll be something from all those scenes somewhere on that side, because Disney loves to do that.
- 37:38But I have go ahead.
- 37:40Well, because you you said there's the Easter egg of of the Imagineer's notes, right?
- 37:46Yeah, that's on the bulletin board, yeah.
- 37:48And surely they'll stick that up in Walt's office or something.
- 37:51I mean, there's there's ways to keep stuff like that.
- 37:54But what what did you start to say?
- 37:56Oh, I I have a feeling that like because Walt is in the beginning of this, I I can see them putting like a hidden silhouette of Walt in the background of the final scene, like in a window reflection, or if they are flying in a spacecraft outside, just I think Walt's presence might be more relevant in a lot of these decades, but in particular the future one, because that's they're gonna want to wrap it up and tie it into something.
- 38:23So maybe they'll all be watching like the latest Disney release in 2087 or something, or something.
- 38:31Yeah, I just think Walt himself will have a presence.
- 38:34But can I tell you my my prediction for this future scene?
- 38:37Okay, yes.
- 38:38What is it, Nostradamus?
- 38:40So I think the teenager, you know, Patricia or whatever, unless they change the names, that daughter takes a selfie with the entire carousel audience, and Disney adds it to your app as an additional photo pass.
- 38:55You know how you get the ride on, like, you know, yeah, when you're riding Everest or something like that.
- 39:00Yeah.
- 39:01I think they're just gonna take advantage somehow.
- 39:04That's brilliant.
- 39:06Yeah, that's pretty brilliant.
- 39:08Oh, that's my thought.
- 39:10Well, they should steal that, if not, and then they'll just pretend they were doing it all along, so you don't get any credit.
- 39:16Well, of course, but it's still a cool idea that you thought of.
- 39:19It would be cool, I think.
- 39:21I uh do you have anything else before we wrap this up?
- 39:26My only other prediction was that you will be satisfied with whatever this is.
- 39:32I think so.
- 39:32Even though even though we've joked on social media about the fact that you could just build the new one on top of it and it would be a carousel of progress corkscrew, or that you could somehow expand it so that you went around the first set and then you moved to an interior, which would be a pinwheel of progress, right?
- 39:55As opposed to a corkscrew of progress.
- 39:58But um, yeah, I I just my my hope is that I I just love that it's gonna continue to introduce new generations to this attraction and that idea of optimism.
- 40:11We need a lot of optimism in the world, and I feel like it's been, you know, like I said, it's kind of been a museum for a while, and it feels closer to Walt's intent to like make these changes.
- 40:23And, you know, you you said something when we were going through the country bears ordeal, because I, you know, I checked in with you on that.
- 40:31And you uh mentioned, and I can't remember exact the exact quote, but you said something about like how progress isn't necessarily pretty at the time and it's a little bit messy, but sometimes, and I'm paraphrasing you, I'm sure you said it much better than I'm saying it, but it it cuts away like those old layers that we loved and replaces them with something unfamiliar, but it's it ends up being so much better than what you were expecting.
- 41:00And and you kind of went on to say that Disney parks, you know, it's they adapt and they grow, and they still provide the same kind of laughter and tears that we had with something you know old, but when it's new, it still does that thing.
- 41:17And I've been thinking about that a lot, and you probably don't remember saying that, but um No, I'll have to go back and listen to those episodes.
- 41:25But uh it kind of means back to that.
- 41:29Well, go ahead.
- 41:29It sounds like what I feel, but yeah, you said much better than that, but it's it's about like progress not necessarily being like a straight line, and we hear that a lot, right?
- 41:39And especially like I've been thinking about that in like you know, show business terms and like careers and stuff, and it's not a smooth track, and it like turns and it dips, and there's always a surprise.
- 41:50And even though like the idea of progress kind of makes you feel heartbroken, like it's all good because it's just going to be fine.
- 41:58And so, yes, I love I love Carousel of Progress exactly as it is, but I understand that it has to change, and I wouldn't want to go into that building and see something different.
- 42:12Like I want it to be the Carousella Progress.
- 42:13So, like You wouldn't want it to be singing animals going through all sorts of styles of music, would you?
- 42:22That would be traumatizing, I'm sure, to end up with a bunch of chickens singing ta-ra-ra-boom dia.
- 42:30Yeah, I just think there's room for that beautiful tomorrow that they always talk about, even if it looks like super different from today.
- 42:38So I don't know.
- 42:38I'm excited, man.
- 42:39It's not gonna, I mean, and it will look very different, but the imagineers understand, and there will be so many love letters in there that I think I think we'll all be well, I can't say we'll all be happy, but I think if they can please a diehard fan like you, they will have accomplished their goal.
- 43:00And I, you know, I'm just glad like we are going back in a couple weeks, and I've already warned the girls that we're going to go on it a few times.
- 43:06And I'm glad that I get that because I think I'd be more bummed if they didn't and I wasn't able to go back.
- 43:12You know, I was really glad when I realized you get one more visit before it closes.
- 43:17I do, yeah, I was thrilled because that I'll I'll do my own tears on my own time.
- 43:24But uh yeah, so uh thanks for you know kind of talking that through with me.
- 43:30And hopefully, you know, people appreciate our thoughts and hopefully it helps them, you know.
- 43:37Hopefully they wild away a commute listening to us ponder the future and the progress of the carousel of progress.
- 43:45And you know, it's only gonna be, I don't know, what, a year?
- 43:50Yeah, because I mean they're announcing what they say in 2027.
- 43:54Yeah, and I have a feeling that they did all this now so that maybe in August they'll be a little more concrete about some things.
- 44:05Um, maybe because you're right, it is awfully strange that you chose at the very end of May to make this big announcement when you've got D23 coming up.
- 44:16And man, we paid enough.
- 44:18Kimberly and Jackie and I paid enough for those tickets.
- 44:20We want some wow factor.
- 44:22I know I was like D23.
- 44:24This is a big piece of news that you just kind of dropped out of nowhere.
- 44:28So well, and maybe to the general public, it's not as huge news as it is to deep hardcore Disney fans, but that that's probably very true.
- 44:39They they were probably the the the regular news cycle was probably not shaken during the country bear jamboree announcement either.
- 44:48Probably not, and but and I'm I'm realistic enough to understand that.
- 44:53Yeah.
- 44:54Well, thanks for talking it out with me.
- 44:56And uh and thanks, Tia and Kimberly, for waiting on that episode till next week.
- 45:00We do appreciate that as well.
- 45:02Yeah, we do.
- 45:03All right.
- 45:04But we had to talk of the important news of the day.
- 45:06Not that you're not important, but this was breaking news.
- 45:10Carouselic progress is breaking.
- 45:13That's right.
- 45:14It's going to be a few times a day sometimes.
- 45:17Yeah.
- 45:17So, well, Mr.
- 45:19McCall, it's always a pleasure, of course.
- 45:21Likewise, uh, and what we say every week is.
