- 0:37Speaker 1: Welcome back. It is all welly Wednesday. Doctor John Thornton
- 0:40Speaker 1: is with us tomorrow on the show. Bob Herrig, the
- 0:43Speaker 1: great golf writer from Sports Illustrated. His latest book is
- 0:47Speaker 1: called Tiger v. Jack Goff's Great Debate. Bob Herrig will
- 0:52Speaker 1: be with us tomorrow and then next week, I think
- 0:55Speaker 1: on Monday, maybe on Tuesday. Author Tom Doyle joins me.
- 1:01Speaker 1: His book is called Ringo, A fab life on the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Beatles drummer who will turn eighty six in July. I
- 1:10Speaker 1: know it makes me feel a little, but that's just
- 1:12Speaker 1: because I am John Thornton is here. Uh, you have
- 1:16Speaker 1: a front seat for Bucky Ball this last year. I
- 1:19Speaker 1: think we were all surprised. Uh, not only how he
- 1:23Speaker 1: was able to put things together in a very short
- 1:26Speaker 1: amount of time, uh, but just the style of play
- 1:30Speaker 1: and and and how he went about it. Give me,
- 1:32Speaker 1: give me a sense from from your perspective.
- 1:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 5: So I had no prior knowledge of Bucky right until
- 1:39Speaker 5: he came here, and then the first time I ever
- 1:42Speaker 5: met him or saw him was his press conference. And
- 1:45Speaker 5: so you're just you know, sitting back and trying to
- 1:48Speaker 5: get a feel for what it's going to be like.
- 1:50Speaker 5: And obviously the style of plays very foreign to what
- 1:53Speaker 5: somebody my era.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Or yeah I did. Yeah, it's a little different.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know, we had things like loyal A
- 2:00Speaker 5: Marrimount when they ran like you said, and Sonny Allen's
- 2:03Speaker 5: did when he's in me and all that stuff. But uh,
- 2:06Speaker 5: pressing for full pressing for job different. So it was
- 2:10Speaker 5: fun for me to watch it be implemented in practice
- 2:13Speaker 5: in the summertime, to see him in action, to see him,
- 2:17Speaker 5: and I think it was really kind of a luxury
- 2:19Speaker 5: for me because everybody on that floor, with the exception
- 2:24Speaker 5: of Josh Holloway and but you know, but he had
- 2:27Speaker 5: assistant coaches that obviously knew the system, so he's teaching
- 2:30Speaker 5: it from from square one, and so it was fun
- 2:33Speaker 5: for me to watch and see how it all fits
- 2:36Speaker 5: and and and it's it doesn't do it justice when
- 2:39Speaker 5: you think it's just fast placed, shoot a lot of
- 2:41Speaker 5: threes and place. It's way more sophisticated than what most
- 2:46Speaker 5: people could understand, really, from changing defenses within possession to
- 2:51Speaker 5: how you're going to pick up full court and what
- 2:53Speaker 5: your rules are and what you do and so, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 5: just saying things like that makes it sound complicated, But
- 2:59Speaker 5: he's of a communicator and a teacher. And when I
- 3:03Speaker 5: say that his staff this way and to see that
- 3:07Speaker 5: be implemented and which this then time, which I think
- 3:10Speaker 5: you know as well as anybody. It's it's distracting as
- 3:15Speaker 5: far as what you have to deal with as far
- 3:18Speaker 5: as the teaching side of it, and you're under the
- 3:21Speaker 5: gun to get it implemented in a short period of
- 3:23Speaker 5: time with a bunch of guys from all over.
- 3:25Speaker 1: The world new players. Yeah, but it's been like that
- 3:28Speaker 1: every year.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Yes, but that's what's going to be. So some coaches
- 3:30Speaker 6: I think are suited better for this, not that it's
- 3:32Speaker 6: going to be a challenge every year. It will be, yes,
- 3:35Speaker 6: but some.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Coaches and styles of players more suited for this than others.
- 3:38Speaker 5: And I think his style of play also lends itself
- 3:40Speaker 5: to being popular with people.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Okay, it's certainly popular with with with fans. I mean,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know, it's it's fun to watch. I mean, anybody
- 3:49Speaker 1: is going to score one hundred a game and and
- 3:51Speaker 1: cover you all over the floor. How could that not
- 3:53Speaker 1: be fun? Right? What what I ask is the players
- 3:59Speaker 1: that want to buy and to play like that, right,
- 4:03Speaker 1: they're asking. He's asking a lot of them, right, a
- 4:06Speaker 1: lot and so. And then because of that style, some
- 4:12Speaker 1: guys just you can't play forty minutes a game doing that.
- 4:16Speaker 1: You just can't do it right.
- 4:18Speaker 5: If you do it, if you want to do what
- 4:20Speaker 5: he wants to do, you're not capable. Yes, But if
- 4:22Speaker 5: you look at it though, and I've noticed this over
- 4:24Speaker 5: the course of the year, if you look at minutes played,
- 4:28Speaker 5: if you're a player and you're in shape, like you
- 4:31Speaker 5: have to be to do what he wants you to do,
- 4:33Speaker 5: and you can't fake conditioning exactly.
- 4:37Speaker 6: You got to be there. And so if you.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Look if you're you'll get twenty five, twenty seven, sometimes
- 4:44Speaker 5: twenty eight minutes a game.
- 4:45Speaker 6: That's a lot, you know.
- 4:47Speaker 5: And if you go look at other rosters, sure there's
- 4:49Speaker 5: guys that are going thirty two to thirty four whatever.
- 4:52Speaker 5: But if you have eleven guys, twelve guys that are
- 4:57Speaker 5: on all on the same page of what you're trying
- 4:59Speaker 5: to get done, you feed off one another and everybody
- 5:04Speaker 5: you don't know on and given night, if it's going
- 5:05Speaker 5: to be your night, yes, did you get more minutes
- 5:08Speaker 5: or you have you know, it's one thing that you know,
- 5:12Speaker 5: the notoriety of scoring points is a big deal, absolutely,
- 5:15Speaker 5: but there's also things that contribute for teams winning. And
- 5:18Speaker 5: what's even a bigger deal is your team to have success. Yes,
- 5:21Speaker 5: and you scrow all points in the world, but if
- 5:23Speaker 5: you don't.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Win, it doesn't matter, right, And.
- 5:26Speaker 5: So his his ability to convey that message and get
- 5:31Speaker 5: people to do it. And it didn't start day one,
- 5:34Speaker 5: and we had some bumps in the road early, but
- 5:37Speaker 5: then once they got rolling. It was fun for me
- 5:41Speaker 5: was to think that people, very good coaches in a
- 5:44Speaker 5: very tough league, they think they have it figured out,
- 5:47Speaker 5: but they don't, and they towards the end of SEC
- 5:52Speaker 5: play you know, obviously, I think not to diminish the
- 5:57Speaker 5: level of caliber of players we had, but talent and
- 6:01Speaker 5: depth got us. And I think that we had that
- 6:04Speaker 5: little blip, not a blip, but we had a little
- 6:07Speaker 5: you know, uh decline and then revamped ourselves. Yes again,
- 6:11Speaker 5: so I mean, but the style of play is something
- 6:14Speaker 5: that people I compare it to the veer football.
- 6:17Speaker 6: Yes, because if you.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Don't see the veer every day in practice, you're not
- 6:21Speaker 5: ready for that one anomaly.
- 6:23Speaker 6: Right, and you go cover the veer.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Yes, well, I think that's what people found out with
- 6:28Speaker 5: the way Bucky and Texas in and played this year.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yeah, when you have two days to prepare us.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Not long enough and they go, we're gonna pick them
- 6:34Speaker 5: up full court and we'll have the scout team put
- 6:36Speaker 5: in full court pressure.
- 6:37Speaker 6: That's not close getting ready to face.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 5: And I thought we were playing Rick Barnes at Tennessee,
- 6:43Speaker 5: and I meant, you know, high school.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Yes, great player, Yes, you're going to draft.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Got a five second calling him just inbtting the ball
- 6:51Speaker 5: in the first pace exactly.
- 6:53Speaker 1: They got several five seconds sack game early in the.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Game, and we lose the double overtime to them. You know,
- 6:59Speaker 5: but so playing Alabama tough.
- 7:02Speaker 1: As we did on the road, as a heck of
- 7:04Speaker 1: a game.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Being Georgia beaten Austin Auburn, I mean, what a remarkable start.
- 7:11Speaker 1: So we've looked at at players that that he's bringing
- 7:16Speaker 1: in this year in the portal and and he's he's
- 7:20Speaker 1: bringing in some really good players and and he's had all,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, self a season to get ready to do that.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Then you look around at what the league has done
- 7:32Speaker 1: in general, and they were down a little bit last year,
- 7:35Speaker 1: but they're going to be down compared. We're always going
- 7:38Speaker 1: to compare them, right, I mean, I don't think this
- 7:40Speaker 1: league will ever. It was unbelievable, you know, the talent
- 7:43Speaker 1: and everything kind of came together right that one season.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So I don't think it's fair every year to compare
- 7:49Speaker 1: to that year. But it was doubt a little bit.
- 7:52Speaker 1: There wasn't probably a great team, you know, this year,
- 7:55Speaker 1: there were some good teams. But you look at what
- 7:58Speaker 1: some of these other teams also have brought in, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: what what Kyl is doing, what Rick Barnes is doing.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I mean, it's just like Austin, It's gonna be a fight, right.
- 8:10Speaker 6: It will be And I do.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Like, obviously he's been here a year, staff's been here
- 8:14Speaker 5: a year. Yep, there's a product now they know what
- 8:16Speaker 5: it's about. But you know, like like I said earlier,
- 8:20Speaker 5: there was nobody that knew the system Halloween, a few coaches. Well,
- 8:24Speaker 5: now you got Bacho, Zach, Chris McDermott and Jamie Vinson.
- 8:28Speaker 5: There's at least five guys. Six guys that have been
- 8:30Speaker 5: here will help in that transition as they come in.
- 8:34Speaker 5: But the other part of it is it's coaching, and
- 8:36Speaker 5: it's believability, and it's trust that you can plug and
- 8:40Speaker 5: play people from other programs into a style.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Of man And that's the thing, right because as we've mentioned,
- 8:48Speaker 1: every single year, you have to rebuild a team. Now, yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you do, you do.
- 8:52Speaker 6: It's almost like junior college.
- 8:54Speaker 1: To do well. Okay, that's fair. That's a fair assessment.
- 8:56Speaker 6: You gotta if you got two semesters out of a
- 8:59Speaker 6: kiss semester.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You know that was yeah, big, that's that's fair.
- 9:03Speaker 6: And obviously so is it.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Is it harder now on the coaches? That's probably a
- 9:08Speaker 1: stupid question.
- 9:09Speaker 5: I say, you have to be you have to be
- 9:11Speaker 5: built to do this. Now, that's why you've seen so
- 9:14Speaker 5: many of these guys.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Quit yes, because it's not it's yeah, it's like I
- 9:17Speaker 1: can't do this.
- 9:19Speaker 5: And then it's NonStop. You know, they have a little
- 9:22Speaker 5: bit of a pause in the summer, but it's a
- 9:23Speaker 5: very tiny window. And then the fact that you're you're
- 9:28Speaker 5: tasked to do so much and keeping track of what's
- 9:31Speaker 5: going on, no matter you're trying to win and win games.
- 9:34Speaker 5: But at the same time, you can and you never
- 9:36Speaker 5: can lose sight of recruiting.
- 9:37Speaker 1: But you've got to recruit your own players.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Now, recruit your own players back, hold on to your
- 9:42Speaker 5: own players, and you know, be discerning the entire time
- 9:45Speaker 5: of what you need to get better as you go.
- 9:47Speaker 5: And I think they do a really good job of
- 9:49Speaker 5: knowing what fits in the top style of play they
- 9:52Speaker 5: want to play well.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You have to and that a big part of it,
- 9:55Speaker 1: without a doubt. I mean, you can't just bring uh
- 9:58Speaker 1: even if you can't just go get a thirty point
- 10:01Speaker 1: guy if he expects to be the guy and take
- 10:06Speaker 1: all the shots right in this system.
- 10:08Speaker 5: And then, as you know, defense only works when you
- 10:12Speaker 5: have five or eleven doing what you're supposed to be
- 10:14Speaker 5: doing exactly one guy out there, not pulling his Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 5: pulling the rope in the area that it's not gonna work.
- 10:21Speaker 5: And one thing about Bucky, it's non negotiable. I don't
- 10:24Speaker 5: care who you are, you're gonna and he does it
- 10:26Speaker 5: in a positive way.
- 10:28Speaker 7: Yeah, but you've seen him, Oh yeah, absolutely up in
- 10:31Speaker 7: the middle of the season.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Uh, he'll start somebody. But hey, it's it's all up front.
- 10:36Speaker 5: You know what the parameters are.
- 10:38Speaker 1: For you to have success, you know, as long as
- 10:40Speaker 1: you're consistent. I think you know that some players want
- 10:44Speaker 1: to be coached hard, right they do. Uh, some players
- 10:47Speaker 1: want disciplined, right, but but they want it consistent right, fair.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Well, and what's fair? Also talking about what's tasked of coaches,
- 10:56Speaker 5: nowadays they have more of I guess resources with the
- 11:02Speaker 5: number of coaches, with the things that they do.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Good, gosh, there's so many coaches there are, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: because more coaches and players.
- 11:10Speaker 6: It's come a long ways now, It's all it's deceiving too.
- 11:13Speaker 6: Just because they look like a coach doesn't mean they're
- 11:15Speaker 6: not a manager.
- 11:18Speaker 1: How would how would you what would you do to
- 11:20Speaker 1: fix the system if you were the czar? How would
- 11:23Speaker 1: you fix the system? Right now? As it is? In
- 11:25Speaker 1: every regard. It's it's broken transfer portal for sure. Let's
- 11:30Speaker 1: start there.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Okay, you can transfer, and if a coach leaves or
- 11:34Speaker 5: gets fired, you could be automatically eligible.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I like that.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Yeah, you sign him with somebody and he's not coaching. Yes,
- 11:40Speaker 5: you can leave and beyond Yes, that's the no brainer
- 11:42Speaker 5: than me. Yes, if you transfer for any other reason,
- 11:46Speaker 5: it would be a city year.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You'd have to sit out like like used to, like, yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 1: it'll shut the door.
- 11:52Speaker 6: On the portal and nobody's want to sit anymore.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Correct.
- 11:55Speaker 6: But if you coach leaves, yeah, go yeah, but it's
- 11:59Speaker 6: ridiculous to played for five different schools, you know.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And well what I think it's ridiculous is having twenty
- 12:04Speaker 1: five and twenty seven year old guys that have played
- 12:06Speaker 1: eight years.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it depends on but if Buckets signs one tomorrow,
- 12:10Speaker 5: I'll take him.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Well, I mean that's that's I mean, that's that's what
- 12:14Speaker 1: you're competing, that's what you're competing to get, right.
- 12:16Speaker 6: But the other part of it is too how about
- 12:18Speaker 6: just having four years of eligibility, what.
- 12:21Speaker 1: How about how about how about how about giving how
- 12:24Speaker 1: about giving them five years? Okay, okay, five years to
- 12:30Speaker 1: play for.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Yeah, that's fine. I mean that's what that's what that's
- 12:33Speaker 6: what it used to be.
- 12:34Speaker 1: That's what it used to be.
- 12:35Speaker 6: That's right. And then there's medical hardships. Yeah, I get that,
- 12:38Speaker 6: and you know.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What, you can be very but that's why you get
- 12:41Speaker 1: five years to play for it.
- 12:42Speaker 5: The parameters of what that medical hardship is needs to
- 12:45Speaker 5: be more defined. Okay, how many games?
- 12:48Speaker 6: And then I think it's case by case what type
- 12:50Speaker 6: of injury it is. I get that, Yeah, but to
- 12:53Speaker 6: have six or even seven years, I mean it's nuts.
- 12:58Speaker 6: It's crazy.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Well, and why would you want to leave now if
- 13:01Speaker 1: you're good enough? Because you're getting paid. Well, I know
- 13:04Speaker 1: that's why they're staying taking.
- 13:05Speaker 5: Money and that, you know, especially in basketball, because you know,
- 13:09Speaker 5: if you're not if you're not a lottery.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Pick, you're not exactly anything exactly.
- 13:13Speaker 6: So if you're not a lottery pick, ain't playing?
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yes, Yes, I mean I mean college life's pretty good.
- 13:18Speaker 1: They treat them pretty well. And you were you were
- 13:22Speaker 1: a guy who was honored for academics as well as
- 13:26Speaker 1: athletics when you were here. One thing that's happened, which
- 13:30Speaker 1: we talk about all the time, is you never hear
- 13:33Speaker 1: anything about academics anymore, Right, you just don't. You don't know.
- 13:38Speaker 1: You don't hear anything about academics. You don't hear about
- 13:41Speaker 1: anybody staying eligible. You don't hear anybody being penalized for
- 13:46Speaker 1: not going to class. A lot of these guys who
- 13:49Speaker 1: are twenty six and twenty seven, God bless them. I
- 13:52Speaker 1: think they've probably gotten some kind of a degree. They
- 13:56Speaker 1: don't even have to go to school.
- 13:58Speaker 6: No, it's the wild West, is what it is.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yes, it is. It's worse than professional. Professional has more rules.
- 14:05Speaker 5: When I when I think is gonna be, I'll tell
- 14:08Speaker 5: you this is an exception to me, I would think,
- 14:10Speaker 5: and I'm gonna go down this one little path here. Uh.
- 14:13Speaker 6: But yes, that that was a perfect fit for him here,
- 14:17Speaker 6: no doubt.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And he's had he's been around, right, he has been around.
- 14:20Speaker 5: But and of course maybe it's just because we like
- 14:23Speaker 5: the way he played yea, the double doubles.
- 14:25Speaker 6: That he stacked up.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, career leader in a season for.
- 14:28Speaker 6: Texas A and M.
- 14:29Speaker 1: It's a lot of people that he passed a lot
- 14:31Speaker 1: of people, and.
- 14:33Speaker 6: It was undersized for his position, but he gave it
- 14:36Speaker 6: every ounce of energy, every night, every night.
- 14:39Speaker 5: He wanted to win, and he wanted Whether he wanted
- 14:41Speaker 5: to win for Texas A and M or his team
- 14:42Speaker 5: or his mama, I don't know, but he wanted to win.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And I love that, right, and uh, you better have
- 14:48Speaker 1: a few of those guys.
- 14:49Speaker 6: And he will have. He will be celebrated at Texas
- 14:52Speaker 6: A and M. When he's forty years old, he will,
- 14:54Speaker 6: I hope. So how many people that have.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Been vagabonds all over the world, how they're gonna choose
- 15:01Speaker 5: where there.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Who they identify with?
- 15:05Speaker 6: What is it Kentucky or yeah?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, they're gonna miss out, yes,
- 15:12Speaker 1: no doubt.
- 15:12Speaker 6: You know, money's money, I get it.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We were talking about this, uh Monday with with Ksey Concepts.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Great kid, the super kid, right is he an Aggie? Well,
- 15:25Speaker 1: I mean he was here a year. You know what
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm saying. I mean, you grew you grew up, John,
- 15:31Speaker 1: You you knew you were going four years, right, You're
- 15:33Speaker 1: you're going to play four years? Right? I mean, that's it.
- 15:36Speaker 6: And it's just so foreign to the old guys like us,
- 15:39Speaker 6: and everybody's gonna say it is No.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Hey, I'm not whinding about players getting paid at all. Uh,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I've never whined about that. If the n C Double
- 15:50Speaker 1: A would have done it right, we wouldn't be in
- 15:52Speaker 1: this position. They were so far behind and and you know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: so stubborn and kept going to the courts. And now
- 16:00Speaker 1: they're getting their rears beat in the courts because that's
- 16:03Speaker 1: totally changed. So it's all their fault. Okay, there could
- 16:07Speaker 1: be a way. These guys were making money, maybe not
- 16:09Speaker 1: five million a year, but they could be making good
- 16:13Speaker 1: money for a college student. And now the cat's out
- 16:15Speaker 1: of the bag. You can't put the genie back in
- 16:18Speaker 1: the bottle, right. You can't come to a kid who's
- 16:20Speaker 1: making four million and go, oh, I'm sorry, the rules
- 16:23Speaker 1: have changed. Next year, we only pay you one hundred
- 16:26Speaker 1: thousand dollars because that's the system. Now, well that's too late.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So you've got to figure out how do we go forward, right,
- 16:34Speaker 1: how do we afford it? And what are the parameters
- 16:39Speaker 1: and the rules? And we don't have people doing that
- 16:44Speaker 1: right now.
- 16:44Speaker 6: They are, but they're all over the place, and they're.
- 16:46Speaker 1: All over the place litigation. I get that, But you
- 16:50Speaker 1: can't be scared. You can't make a decision going, well,
- 16:54Speaker 1: they'll take us to court. Well, Okay, let's go right.
- 16:58Speaker 6: No, And that's the thing. There's a model out there
- 17:00Speaker 6: and the reason should But.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Who's going to lead that.
- 17:05Speaker 6: I don't know where that's coming from.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I mean, I don't hear John. I don't hear anything
- 17:09Speaker 1: from presidents and chancellors anymore, do you know? But we
- 17:12Speaker 1: were always told by the NC double A, well, they
- 17:15Speaker 1: have to make the decisions. And we had a few
- 17:17Speaker 1: presidents that would stand up and go, well, we're going
- 17:20Speaker 1: to have put a committee together and we're going to
- 17:22Speaker 1: get this cleaned up. I don't hear from any of
- 17:24Speaker 1: them anymore.
- 17:25Speaker 6: Same leadership stuck their head in the sand when it
- 17:28Speaker 6: was time.
- 17:29Speaker 1: They didn't make a decision.
- 17:30Speaker 5: And that's the thing about it also in that being
- 17:34Speaker 5: part of the NC double A is voluntary, right, you
- 17:37Speaker 5: don't have this apart, but it's a whole lot of
- 17:38Speaker 5: money and tied up in it.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yes, and so well they still control the basketball and.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Then so what happens is when you have the purse
- 17:47Speaker 5: strings like that, you would think that that would be
- 17:49Speaker 5: the ability to keep but they're so tied up with
- 17:52Speaker 5: you know, the the litigation thing that's happening every time
- 17:55Speaker 5: they make a.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Ruling right that they won't make a decision. They can't well,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and so so football is on its own right now.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I still I still think sooner rather than later, we're
- 18:06Speaker 1: going to have forty or fifty teams. It's gonna be
- 18:09Speaker 1: like the NFL. There'll be divisions. You may be able
- 18:13Speaker 1: to keep the conferences. I don't know about that. It
- 18:16Speaker 1: depends on what television does.
- 18:19Speaker 5: I don't know that where this is going, But not
- 18:21Speaker 5: about conferences when it used to be, when he used
- 18:24Speaker 5: to know what the Pacific Coast Conference was.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I still can't. I can't fathom. I cannot.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I still don't have Oregon and Southern cal and UCLA
- 18:39Speaker 1: and the Big ten. I just it makes no sense
- 18:42Speaker 1: when you.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Talk about student athlete welfare, that's what always.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And they're flying all over the country.
- 18:46Speaker 5: They were supposed to getting an education, and you're spending
- 18:48Speaker 5: your one week one night, you're on the East Coast next.
- 18:52Speaker 1: It's nuts. It's just that it's just out of control.
- 18:56Speaker 1: But I don't I don't know who's going to step
- 18:59Speaker 1: forward and make a decision right committee. I want to
- 19:03Speaker 1: be bizarre. I wouldn't be on a committee. I'm not
- 19:05Speaker 1: gonna be with fifteen other people in fifteen opinions. I
- 19:09Speaker 1: would be the commissioner, and I would make decisions, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: I would be a benevolent dictator and I would clean
- 19:16Speaker 1: it up. Okay, so you need you need somebody. You know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: in football, they've said, hey, Nick Saban needs to step forward,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and he would be a guy like that would be perfect, right,
- 19:26Speaker 1: He's smart, he has the game at heart. I think
- 19:28Speaker 1: he has most of the players interests at heart, right,
- 19:32Speaker 1: And you need somebody to make that choice. But you
- 19:35Speaker 1: have to, John, You have to have people that are
- 19:39Speaker 1: willing to make that right. Now, all these conferences, they
- 19:44Speaker 1: just they want everything right, they want it all, and
- 19:48Speaker 1: they're not willing to share. They're not willing to make
- 19:52Speaker 1: a choice that's good for quote student and we don't
- 19:56Speaker 1: call them student athletes anymore, which is good because they're not.
- 20:00Speaker 1: But somebody has to have their best interests right. And
- 20:04Speaker 1: now people are going while they're making five million dollars,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I'm going, yeah, but but it's not. It's you don't.
- 20:12Speaker 6: The word that comes to my mind is sustainability.
- 20:16Speaker 1: How do we sustain it?
- 20:18Speaker 6: At some point there's going to be a level that, don't.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You think, Yeah, we were talking to this week. It
- 20:25Speaker 1: used to be the arms race for facilities, right, and
- 20:27Speaker 1: now it's not. Now it's players. All the money is
- 20:31Speaker 1: going to be that you have to have both.
- 20:33Speaker 6: And not everybody can fight that battle like that.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Well, the very few people can fight that battle. I mean,
- 20:38Speaker 1: you know, we just heard this week that always called
- 20:44Speaker 1: Whittingham at Michigan. He said, we're they'll be there'll be
- 20:48Speaker 1: five or ten teams have a fifty million dollars payroll
- 20:52Speaker 1: by next year in football.
- 20:54Speaker 6: Fifty that's amazing.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Okay. Two years ago Ohio State when they won had
- 20:59Speaker 1: twenty twenty one million. It was and everybody was aghast, right,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and and but it's it's just going up and up
- 21:05Speaker 1: and up. And I don't know, is there a ceiling.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I don't know. You would think there would be, but
- 21:11Speaker 1: I mean you're around here. There's there's some wealthy guys
- 21:14Speaker 1: writing checks. But but if if they don't get what
- 21:17Speaker 1: they want, are they still going to write checks?
- 21:19Speaker 2: Well?
- 21:19Speaker 5: Well, I'll tell you what I would focus on is
- 21:21Speaker 5: the leadership at your individual institution, correct.
- 21:24Speaker 6: That has common sense, that's competitive.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And are there those Yeah, yeah, I think there's a
- 21:31Speaker 1: there's a few, right, but.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I think we're sitting in a pretty good place right
- 21:34Speaker 5: now at Texas A and M, with the leadership that
- 21:36Speaker 5: we have. And I think that the mechanisms they have
- 21:41Speaker 5: to generate money, it's not you know, they're trying to
- 21:45Speaker 5: diversify that as best they can.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and compete. What about Olympic sports, it's just hard.
- 21:51Speaker 6: And you see them, and I think we've done a
- 21:53Speaker 6: good job of not you know, cutting taking them. No,
- 21:56Speaker 6: and they and and they do.
- 21:58Speaker 5: They do have the best they try, the great coaches,
- 22:01Speaker 5: we've had success. Yeah, and facilities are great. So yeah,
- 22:05Speaker 5: I think we're we're doing that balancing act right now.
- 22:07Speaker 6: Very well.
- 22:08Speaker 1: It's hard. Yeah, Uh, basketball coming coming up. Let's let's
- 22:13Speaker 1: talk a little bit this next year. What what he said.
- 22:17Speaker 1: We know how competitive it's going to be because these
- 22:19Speaker 1: other teams have gone out and done the same thing.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Everybody's excited here and I get it. Buckets brought in
- 22:24Speaker 1: some really good players, some really good pieces. We know
- 22:27Speaker 1: he can make them fit because we saw him do
- 22:29Speaker 1: it last year. Right, we know what what we're going
- 22:33Speaker 1: to see.
- 22:33Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think the pieces have gotten better.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Sure, absolutely they have.
- 22:37Speaker 5: You go back and think about it. We had probably one.
- 22:40Speaker 5: You say, when you say legit, I mean one on
- 22:43Speaker 5: paper point guard.
- 22:44Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, and and then you know you may
- 22:47Speaker 8: do yes. At the end of the season, Pop was, yes,
- 22:50Speaker 8: he's probably a combo but yeah, you know. But at
- 22:53Speaker 8: the same time, I think we've gone out and got
- 22:55Speaker 8: some guards. You know, a young young man from l
- 22:58Speaker 8: s U. That's a quick dude. It's the past first guy.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Yep.
- 23:02Speaker 5: You know you're going to have the people that you've
- 23:05Speaker 5: signed it to fill a role that maybe combo guard.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, haye. And you've got guys that could
- 23:12Speaker 1: shoot and yet guys.
- 23:13Speaker 6: That can shoot and score, not just shoot, but.
- 23:16Speaker 1: School well that's what I mean, right, but what they.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Can do things, you know, you think about it. We
- 23:22Speaker 5: we we've got a great mixture of forwards Tennessee.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Right, Yes, yep, you know, one of Bucky's guys had
- 23:29Speaker 1: to get size, had to get bigger.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Good good guys. Got Zach coming back, that's huge, Yeah,
- 23:34Speaker 6: Baco back. Obviously you have.
- 23:36Speaker 5: The freshman is six ten from California. You're gonna have
- 23:39Speaker 5: these guys kind of infuse the roster a little bit.
- 23:41Speaker 5: But if you think about it, when late game came
- 23:44Speaker 5: down to it. You look at the good.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Teams, one or two dudes, you still have to have that.
- 23:49Speaker 6: You got to have that guy.
- 23:50Speaker 1: You go get go, get shots always. You know right
- 23:52Speaker 1: that no matter what system you're played, right, no matter
- 23:55Speaker 1: the system, you have to have a player that you
- 23:59Speaker 1: know the ball is going to be in that person's
- 24:01Speaker 1: hands at the end of the game, or make a decision,
- 24:05Speaker 1: or make a shot, or go to the free throw
- 24:08Speaker 1: line and make your free throws.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Score on the move, score, spot it up, score, getting
- 24:13Speaker 5: an offensive rebound, just score period, get a bucket.
- 24:17Speaker 6: And we had guys that could score, but I think
- 24:19Speaker 6: we've got a roster now, guys that.
- 24:20Speaker 8: Could be more diverse, more diverse and have an ability
- 24:24Speaker 8: to go get a bucket.
- 24:24Speaker 1: When you have to have one, buckey is almost like
- 24:28Speaker 1: almost positionless. And like all these guys are right, they're
- 24:31Speaker 1: expected to obviously to fit whoever they're on, especial handle
- 24:36Speaker 1: the ball.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Especially defensively because they'll switch back and get the different matchups.
- 24:41Speaker 6: That they want.
- 24:42Speaker 5: But at the same time, you have to be able
- 24:44Speaker 5: to be you know you're gonna have to cover on
- 24:47Speaker 5: the floor, on the floor, uh, and you have to
- 24:50Speaker 5: know when the double team and it's all it's all
- 24:53Speaker 5: a part of his system.
- 24:54Speaker 6: It's it's taught, you know, every day.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Obviously you still like doing what you're doing with radio. Yeah,
- 25:00Speaker 1: I mean, I know travel gets old, but yeah, you know, no.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I'll tell you what. I really really enjoyed this show.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Have you've been invigorated a little bit?
- 25:08Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 25:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I've.
- 25:09Speaker 6: Always enjoyed it.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I mean right, it's like Andrew and I talked about
- 25:12Speaker 5: you before the game had going, you know, Andrew nudge me, goes, hey, John,
- 25:16Speaker 5: we got pretty conceited. Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and we do yeah, you know.
- 25:20Speaker 5: Get to be in venues and and and see competitive games. Uh,
- 25:26Speaker 5: and be a part of it in the scent that
- 25:29Speaker 5: we can be. Yes, but we treated phenomenally and uh yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 5: it's invigorating.
- 25:35Speaker 1: It really good, awesome. Well you're really good at it.
- 25:38Speaker 1: So that's that's I wish. I wish i'd have had
- 25:41Speaker 1: such a good color guy when I was doing the games.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I may still be doing him. I was handicapped.
- 25:48Speaker 6: I remember you doing it.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Was fun. I enjoyed it. Thank you so much. I
- 25:54Speaker 1: always appre always appreciate the visit. And uh, you've been

- 31:03Speaker 1: Southwest gard World. Let me start with a couple of
- 31:08Speaker 1: things if I could, and I can because it's my show. Yeah,
- 31:15Speaker 1: somebody that was a long time ago. Darryl Sheets was
- 31:19Speaker 1: part of A and E storage Wars and his cause
- 31:23Speaker 1: of death has been released. It was suicide. After the finding,
- 31:30Speaker 1: the Lake Havasu City Police Department released a statement confirming
- 31:36Speaker 1: that it was ruled of suicide pending the completion of
- 31:38Speaker 1: toxicology results, but it continues to be an active investigation
- 31:43Speaker 1: because of allegations of cyber bullying associated with the case.
- 31:50Speaker 1: The day his body was discovered, Storage War's co star
- 31:54Speaker 1: Renee Nezota alleged that Sheets had a guy really really
- 31:59Speaker 1: to him lately and cyber bullying him. The statement says
- 32:05Speaker 1: the criminal investigation Unit has submitted Darryl Sheet's cellular phone
- 32:09Speaker 1: for forensic analysis and is currently awaiting the results. This
- 32:14Speaker 1: investigative step is essential to advancing the case. Additional information
- 32:19Speaker 1: will be released as it becomes available. That's very strange
- 32:25Speaker 1: and sad. If true, it is sad.
- 32:28Speaker 11: Keep your thoughts to yourself.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Guys, how you know that's crazy? Uh, here's another one.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Anthony Bourdain, of course, died eight years ago now, which
- 32:44Speaker 1: is hard to believe. By his own hand, he was
- 32:48Speaker 1: sixty one. But there's going to be a new biopic
- 32:50Speaker 1: released in August from BlackBerry director Matt Johnson. The trailer
- 32:58Speaker 1: for Tony at Least Yesterday The Holdovers actor Dominique Sessa
- 33:06Speaker 1: is playing the nineteen year old troubled writer from New Jersey.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Cessa's Bourdain tells high school friend and love interests Nancy,
- 33:17Speaker 1: I'm about to get this huge writing fellowship before he
- 33:21Speaker 1: gets a call from the committee that has decided to
- 33:23Speaker 1: go with another student, Bourdain gets into fights, punches walls,
- 33:28Speaker 1: gets thrown out of bars as his life as a
- 33:30Speaker 1: writer takes a detour when he gets a job at
- 33:33Speaker 1: a restaurant in Massachusetts owned by a character played by
- 33:38Speaker 1: Antonio Benderris. In between cooking and shooting lobsters, Bourdain builds
- 33:44Speaker 1: a bond with the chef and his coworkers as he
- 33:47Speaker 1: gets more comfortable in the kitchen that he would shape
- 33:51Speaker 1: the course of his life. How about that? Of course
- 33:57Speaker 1: he had all of shows, no reservations. Parts Unknown traveled
- 34:04Speaker 1: the world are very popular actually, but again this this
- 34:11Speaker 1: is coming out in August. It doesn't say what if
- 34:15Speaker 1: it's being streamed, if it's going to be in theaters first,

- 34:23Speaker 1: have to tune in and find out. Absolutely So there there.
- 34:29Speaker 11: You only haven't talked about in a while. What Travis Kelsey,
- 34:34Speaker 11: you know you know what we have it? Well, it's
- 34:36Speaker 11: not one. It's not football season and Taylor Swift's not
- 34:39Speaker 11: on tour, so that's probably why. But Travis Kelsey is
- 34:42Speaker 11: looking forward to his wedding day, which, honestly.
- 34:44Speaker 1: What we don't know when that is, by the way,
- 34:48Speaker 1: well there's rumors. Yeah, four. I hope that it's sooner
- 34:53Speaker 1: rather than later. Let's supposed to put it that way.
- 34:56Speaker 1: There you go.
- 34:57Speaker 11: The thirty six year old NFL stars preparing to tie
- 34:59Speaker 11: the knot with fiancey Taylor Swift after sharing their engagement

- 35:09Speaker 1: Pro Rory Mackelrerol No kidding.
- 35:13Speaker 11: I love saying that guy's name.

- 35:19Speaker 11: Yeah. For his and his brother Jason Kelsey's new Highs podcast. Machlroy,
- 35:24Speaker 11: who won the Masters again this year, was discussing the
- 35:28Speaker 11: honor of hosting the tournament's annual Master's Champions Dinner when
- 35:32Speaker 11: he mentioned the Kelsey Swift nuptials. Travis, you'll feel this
- 35:36Speaker 11: this this year whenever you're sitting at your wedding and
- 35:39Speaker 11: you have all the people in the room from like,
- 35:41Speaker 11: it's so it is so amazing to have all these
- 35:43Speaker 11: people in the same room from your childhood, and it's surreal.
- 35:46Speaker 11: It's unbelievable. The only thing that I can compare it
- 35:50Speaker 11: to your wedding day is to your wedding day because
- 35:54Speaker 11: it's like a collection of people in the same room.
- 35:56Speaker 11: It's wild.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And then Travis responded, exactly, they went in where they're
- 36:00Speaker 1: getting married, right, Yes, he sent.
- 36:03Speaker 11: The actual demographic, the actual point where they're getting married.

- 36:19Speaker 1: don't know. You know, I didn't get invited to the
- 36:22Speaker 1: met gala again. I did not get invited again to
- 36:27Speaker 1: the met gala.
- 36:28Speaker 11: I know you have such a great outfit picked out.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. At Purple Talks from high school, The

- 36:58Speaker 1: Ronnie Wood had a launch party greeting fans at the
- 37:04Speaker 1: cavernous historic former bank turned event place in Williamsburg. Inside,
- 37:12Speaker 1: projections for the stones famous tongue and lips logo danced
- 37:16Speaker 1: across the ceiling. Guests were served a selection of ordures
- 37:20Speaker 1: and cocktails. Hey again, I was not invited the band
- 37:27Speaker 1: joined super fan Conan O'Brien for a freewheeling, roughly half
- 37:33Speaker 1: hour conversation in which they discussed the recording process and
- 37:37Speaker 1: how they stayed vital more than sixty years together. O'Brien
- 37:43Speaker 1: was asked asking Jagger how he still sounds like he
- 37:47Speaker 1: did when he was twenties. Jagger quipped, well, I was
- 37:50Speaker 1: taking a lot of drugs back in nineteen sixty eight.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Guest artists on this album include Paul McCartney. Jagger told
- 38:01Speaker 1: Conan Paul really wanted to jump in there. He was
- 38:05Speaker 1: next door in the studio. There was no intimidation from Paul.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Wood joked he wanted to tick that box. He said,
- 38:13Speaker 1: now I can say I played with the Rolling Stones. Wow,
- 38:17Speaker 1: that's pretty good.
- 38:21Speaker 6: You know.
- 38:22Speaker 1: I had a friend at a conference in Vegas yesterday
- 38:25Speaker 1: and their guest speaker was Jay Leno, and he sent
- 38:30Speaker 1: me a video of a sit down Q and A.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Leno just took questions, And my friend was sending me, Hey,
- 38:38Speaker 1: what should I ask him next? What should I ask
- 38:40Speaker 1: him about?
- 38:41Speaker 6: You know?
- 38:42Speaker 1: And all these people asking him questions is pretty cool.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I told him to ask him how much he was
- 38:48Speaker 1: getting paid for the gig. But I don't think he
- 38:50Speaker 1: did that. We can only imagine, Yeah, six figures, I assume.
- 39:00Speaker 11: Yeah, Uh, well, siting a met gala. Well, we were
- 39:05Speaker 11: talking about it previously. Apparently tensions between Rihanna and Asap

- 39:14Speaker 11: video knowing the couple clearly unhappy behind the scenes. So
- 39:18Speaker 11: there was a video posted last Nighty night featured Acep

- 39:38Speaker 11: and he tried to engage with three Ree, who was
- 39:40Speaker 11: seemingly stand off. But that wasn't the only thing. Apparently
- 39:46Speaker 11: and Rocky were filmed by a photog having an emotional
- 39:49Speaker 11: discussion inside their sprinter bus after the event, and at
- 39:53Speaker 11: times they seemed a bit annoying. There were witnesses that
- 39:56Speaker 11: also said that they looked happy throughout the event.
- 39:59Speaker 1: So, wich is it? Which is it?
- 40:02Speaker 11: I'm going to go with they're married and they have
- 40:05Speaker 11: three children.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Probably nice, Yeah, they're.
- 40:10Speaker 11: Probably like this dress is so uncomfortable.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Ye, why did we decide to come here? This is

- 41:46Speaker 11: It sounded like you were reading from the twenty sixteen
- 41:53Speaker 11: and then it just started sounding like you just started
- 41:55Speaker 11: saying random words and objet. But I could be way
- 42:01Speaker 11: out a wag here, I don't know.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Wine, Yeah, get your tickets, Get your tickets. First two
- 42:10Speaker 1: weekends of October. You know, one weekend wasn't big enough.
