- 0:34What's going on, everybody?
- 0:35Welcome to BrakeFix.
- 0:36I'm your host, Brad.
- 0:37With me, as always, is Eric.
- 0:39Heyo!
- 0:40We also have Tanya with us tonight.
- 0:42Hello!
- 0:43Tonight, we're going to do something a little different.
- 0:45Since it's the end of the month, we've got tons of automotive news to talk about.
- 0:50We're going to do, start a new segment called The Drive Thru.
- 0:53And basically this is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of local,
- 0:57racing, and random car adjacent news.
- 1:00So, let's pull up to the window and get into story number one.
- 1:04Hi, can I take an order?
- 1:06Give me a, uh, liter of cola.
- 1:09A what?
- 1:10A liter of cola.
- 1:12Liter of cola.
- 1:13Do we make liter of cola?
- 1:17Alright, alright, relax!
- 1:19This is just industry news.
- 1:20So first, the Mustang Mach E 1400.
- 1:23So I watched the video.
- 1:25I thought it was pretty epic.
- 1:26And, and, I think it's really cool.
- 1:28I think it's actually pretty damn awesome.
- 1:30At least the video was awesome.
- 1:31And after watching the video, it made me want to go out and buy a Mach E.
- 1:35Now I know that the Mach E that's going to be the production model that's coming
- 1:39out soon, if it's not out already.
- 1:41It's going to be completely different.
- 1:42I think Ford, Ford was trying to make a statement because there's
- 1:46all these people out there.
- 1:47We're part of them.
- 1:48Poo pooing the idea of performance, like all electric cars.
- 1:52And I think Ford's just making a statement like, look, electric cars
- 1:55can be, you know, performance cars.
- 1:58We've, we're going to take this thing all the way to the extreme
- 2:01and show you just what it can do.
- 2:02And I think the race, the comparison between all the different types
- 2:07of racing, the different types of vehicles that they have in their
- 2:09performance lineup and their.
- 2:11They're sponsored race cars and having this thing go up
- 2:13against them in the video.
- 2:14Granted, it was probably edited to look like the car was performing a lot
- 2:18better than it actually was, but still.
- 2:191400 horsepower out of a grocery getter.
- 2:23Yeah, it's pretty insane.
- 2:24They, it'll never see the light of day for us, but I mean, nobody's
- 2:28going to have their actual production Mach E and they're not going to have.
- 2:32You know, 1400 horsepower doing burnouts all the way down to the, uh, the
- 2:35Aldi's, but I think it's pretty cool.
- 2:38Yeah, I mean, it's, it's exciting.
- 2:39It's, it's just, you know, showing what you can do with electric cars.
- 2:43I, I mean, I think it's trying to break the stigma that electric cars are just,
- 2:47you know, sort of like the original Prius and they're boring and all they
- 2:51do is, like you said, go be a grocery gutter, but they're capable of more and,
- 2:55you know, there's already the Formula E series electric formula cars and, you
- 2:59know, There's probably going to be more electric racing in the future, so Ford
- 3:04is showcasing, you know, what they can do and they have a long racing heritage.
- 3:08They should get into the game.
- 3:09Why not?
- 3:10I mean, I don't disagree.
- 3:11We were fortunate to see the Mach E at the DC Auto Show before everything kind of
- 3:16closed up here at the beginning of 2020.
- 3:18It's a really good looking car in person.
- 3:20I don't think the pictures do it justice.
- 3:22It has that kind of shooting break look to it.
- 3:25It gave me some feels and I wrote about this in the article and I
- 3:28would love to test drive a stock one.
- 3:30I don't know.
- 3:31It's still very cool.
- 3:32I mean, don't get me wrong.
- 3:32It's a very cool video.
- 3:33If you haven't seen it, watch it.
- 3:34But has it sold me any more on the idea of electric?
- 3:38I don't know.
- 3:38We're going to find out.
- 3:38We're going to talk more about electric cars here.
- 3:40I got to say though, at the end of the day, if the sound of that car.
- 3:45Is the future of racing.
- 3:47It's terrible.
- 3:48It's God awful.
- 3:49Let's make it silent, silent film, please.
- 3:51Because that is, that is a sound that I don't think I could tolerate
- 3:55for more than the length of that video, to be honest with you.
- 3:58Okay.
- 3:58Well, let's step away from the Mach E, but I want to talk about the Tesla.
- 4:02I don't care about them trying to compete at Pikes Peak.
- 4:04I want to talk about the car that they built.
- 4:06The article that we, we read, it was with the model three
- 4:09race car brakes track record.
- 4:11At Willow Springs.
- 4:13Buttonwillow.
- 4:14No, yeah, Buttonwillow.
- 4:15Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 4:16Uh huh.
- 4:17And basically, yeah, they go through, they talk about the car.
- 4:19It's this performance shop that only works on Teslas, or I guess electric
- 4:23cars, called Unplugged Performance.
- 4:26And they, they have their eyes, or their sights set on the 911s,
- 4:30the GT3RS more specifically.
- 4:33I mean, they mention it a couple times in the article, and then how
- 4:36they beat the 991 GT3RS's lap time.
- 4:40It goes into the kind of the electric cars can be great performance cars as well.
- 4:45Look at us, we can do it too.
- 4:47Or anything you can do, I can do better kind of thing.
- 4:50And they say you can buy this package for this car.
- 4:54It's only 35 grand for everything that they did to this car.
- 4:57Well, insult to injury, they did it on street tires.
- 5:01Yeah, they did it on a Michelin Cup 2 tires, which I don't know
- 5:04what tires come on the GT3 RS.
- 5:06Probably something similar, I would guess.
- 5:08Well, I mean, that's the only other similarity between the Tesla and the
- 5:12nine 11, except for their handling.
- 5:13'cause if you've driven a Tesla with any sort of vigor, it
- 5:16handles a lot like a nine 11.
- 5:18So it makes sense that they chose that to go up against, because I, I can't
- 5:21see it going against a perfor or 4 88, you know, or anything like that.
- 5:26It's just, I get it.
- 5:27It's a David and Goliath story, but I think the nine 11 or the 9 9 1
- 5:31in this case has graduated beyond.
- 5:34Consumer streetcar status for a long time.
- 5:37The 9 11 was always kind of nipping at the heels of the supercars and the hypercars.
- 5:41I think it's finally earned its place in that rank.
- 5:45But I don't think a Tesla three has earned enough merit badges to get there yet.
- 5:50But also, so I was reading through the article and it said that the
- 5:54quote from the owner, the CEO of Unplugged performance that they
- 5:59took this Ascension R package of basically bolt on street tune upgrades.
- 6:04So I went to their website and I looked at everything that they did.
- 6:08So yeah, they've got suspension, they've got brake upgrades, they've
- 6:11got body kits, you know, with carbon fiber bits and stuff like that.
- 6:14Everything says bespoke, everything's a little custom and bespoke and one off.
- 6:18And I don't know if they're selling a package to a bunch of people,
- 6:21how it's all one off, but whatever.
- 6:23So they've got ultra lightweight wheels, the sticky tires, the
- 6:26Michelin tires and everything.
- 6:27Then they've got these bespoke racing seats.
- 6:30Now, I don't remember them being a bolt on.
- 6:33And when I look at the pictures of the car, the car is gutted.
- 6:36It's got the two racing seats, but there's no back seat in here.
- 6:38And in the video, you see part of the dash, there was no dash.
- 6:41All you saw was ECU and a bunch of other like wires and stuff.
- 6:44So that's not a bolt on car.
- 6:47And the same way that the Mach E 1400 isn't your run of the mill Mach E.
- 6:52So yes, it's another purpose built race car.
- 6:55David and Goliath story here.
- 6:56So, I don't know, I'm still coming to terms with the whole electric idea.
- 7:01I don't know that it's for me yet.
- 7:02I don't think there's a car out there that gets my jollies.
- 7:06Like, you know, like I still like a petrol powered car does, but I think there's a
- 7:10couple of the ones that we're going to talk about here in a minute that, that,
- 7:13you know, may bend me in that direction.
- 7:15No, it is.
- 7:16Tanya actually has experience being in a Tesla on a racetrack.
- 7:21I don't know.
- 7:22You didn't even get a chance to drive it, but you were at least right seat.
- 7:25Can you tell us about your experience with that and if you think this is a
- 7:28good idea to build a Tesla performance, like straight on race car, I did get
- 7:33to actually drive it on the track.
- 7:35It was during warm up.
- 7:36So we weren't, you know, supposed to go in full out.
- 7:39We weren't wearing helmets.
- 7:40It was, you know, very spirited driving around the track.
- 7:43And I mean, for the most part, the car was fine and it was pretty neutral.
- 7:49The most disconcerting part was coming down straightaway into turn at
- 7:55Shenandoah and the nannies, I guess.
- 8:00I don't know what it thought because I wasn't fully all the way
- 8:03over to the right on the curbing, but it actually lane corrected.
- 8:07That pretty good speed, uh, down the straightaway.
- 8:11I don't know what it sensed it saw, but it literally jerked the steering wheel.
- 8:14We made like a left lane change and I, if you can't turn all that stuff
- 8:19off, I would be very apprehensive to drive one of those on the racetrack.
- 8:23So hopefully there's the ability to shut all that down.
- 8:27Otherwise, I mean, it does get tail happy.
- 8:30I have experienced one on the street before.
- 8:33It's very easy to step out the rear end because lift throttle is.
- 8:38Huge because it's on or off.
- 8:40It's not, you know, it's a lot more difficult, more to get used to with the
- 8:44whole feathering, the throttle and all that, because the power is instantaneous.
- 8:48If you lift and mash the throttle back down, I mean, it's going to
- 8:51want to step the rear end out on you.
- 8:52So.
- 8:53Obviously, there's still a lot of work to race prep one of these.
- 8:57I mean, the article talked about how they basically grabbed all this body
- 9:00kit, suspension, et cetera, et cetera, and threw it all together in three days.
- 9:05And I wonder, okay, how much testing did you do?
- 9:07If you watch the video of him, the lap, whoever it is, he's driving.
- 9:10Um, I mean, it's the rear end stepped out a couple of times.
- 9:13It got swirly.
- 9:14And at one point they even corrected, they just drove off the track
- 9:19and kind of cut the turn a little bit, um, not to probably spin out.
- 9:23I mean, it's, it's, it's evolution, you know, there's probably going
- 9:27to be a, who knows, maybe it'll be a Tesla series and it'll just be
- 9:32very quiet and a bunch of people whirling around hearing tire noises.
- 9:35SCCA, spec Tesla.
- 9:37Well, I think a couple years ago there was an article that I read on Jalopnik about
- 9:41how they were trying to start a Tesla Model S race series and they were looking
- 9:45for drivers to, I guess, to compete.
- 9:48Now, I'm looking here at the list of all the parts on the Ascension R package,
- 9:53and aside from, you know, the suspension bits, and the wheels, the harness, the
- 9:57seats, side skirts, and the bumper, and all the, you know, the good bits
- 10:01there, it doesn't say anything about tuning, so I don't know, I mean, Tesla
- 10:05may lock down their tuning where you can't, they can't do anything to that.
- 10:08They say that you can have a lap time as fast as a GT3 RS for half the money.
- 10:14So I wanted to look this up too, of course.
- 10:16So the Tesla is 54, 000 without the government, you know, the
- 10:20government credit of 7, 500.
- 10:22So it's 54, 000.
- 10:24And then you add this package to get there to their results.
- 10:28So you add another 35, 000.
- 10:30So what's that 90, 000, a GT three RS, 253, 000.
- 10:35So yeah, it's, it's less than half the cost, but still, which would you rather
- 10:39have the Tesla model three with all this crap on it, or the GT three RS go Eric.
- 10:43Porsche, Tanya.
- 10:44I mean, I need to know how many laps you can actually do before you're not going
- 10:50to be able to drive your Tesla home.
- 10:51You got to tell it.
- 10:52I mean, I probably would go with the 9 11.
- 10:55I would go with the 9 11 even just to sell the 9 11 and buy 3 more Teslas.
- 11:00I mean, I'm not necessarily against the Tesla.
- 11:03I mean, they're not being built to be at high performance.
- 11:07So, I mean, there's there's still got to be a lot of.
- 11:10Tuning of the suspension and things like that.
- 11:12I mean, the weight balance is completely different.
- 11:14There's no honking.
- 11:16Hundreds of pounds of motor at the front or the back.
- 11:19Where do you dial that in?
- 11:21They probably still have a long way to go.
- 11:23I mean, I don't know why they're going after the GT3 RS,
- 11:26but this is an age old story.
- 11:28You can buy the greatest performance car in the world for 1 million
- 11:32dollars, or you can buy an HHR and put 50 grand into it, and you can
- 11:36have the fastest thing in the world.
- 11:37Who cares?
- 11:38You're still driving home in a shitbox.
- 11:40I mean, a Tesla, Tesla should be compared to an M3.
- 11:44Or you know, an Audi S four.
- 11:45The things, I think those things are more in there, but to your point, they've
- 11:49already proven that in a drag race, the Tesla is faster than an M five and
- 11:53an M three and all these other cars.
- 11:55So, I mean, I saw what even recently where it was on fifth Gear, I think it was,
- 12:00and they drag raced an S four with the V eight and all that stuff, or whatever.
- 12:04The latest engine they have twin turbo V six or whatever
- 12:07it is against the model three.
- 12:08And the model three obliterated it even.
- 12:11You know, even with just rear wheel drive and just putting his foot
- 12:14to the floor because the electric puts all the power to the ground.
- 12:17But at the end of the day, what can I do with that Audi
- 12:20that I can't do with the Tesla?
- 12:22And there's a lot of things on that list.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:25Well, and I think that leads right into the next topic.
- 12:28Um, I mean, there was an article from the new CEO of Audi and basically
- 12:34the headline was Audi admits behind the times, all electric cars.
- 12:37And I mean, they're not the only one and kudos for them for standing up and saying
- 12:41it, um, they're behind on the technology.
- 12:45Audi and all the major manufacturers aren't battery makers, right?
- 12:49And Tesla from the get go was all about the battery and the other technology
- 12:56that's wrapped in the cars itself.
- 12:58You know, the easy part is the sheet metal, I'd say.
- 13:01I mean, the first Tesla was basically a Lotus.
- 13:04That they retrofitted batteries into so okay.
- 13:08Yeah, but the major manufacturers.
- 13:11Yeah, they have ground to catch up.
- 13:12They've got the assembly.
- 13:14They've got the designs.
- 13:15They've got the reliability chain logistics.
- 13:18Yeah, I mean, they've got a whole different piece of the pie, but
- 13:21they're also trying to retrofit ICE, internal combustion engine cars,
- 13:26to have batteries versus Tesla was building a car around a battery.
- 13:31So there's a bit of a difference.
- 13:33Well, not only that, and I actually just had this conversation today at work.
- 13:37Most people don't realize Tesla is really a software company.
- 13:41I mean, granted they're in the energy business because of the Tesla batteries
- 13:44and the power wall and solar city and all that other kind of stuff.
- 13:47And that's really where their R and D is right in that electrical
- 13:50technology, wherever they're getting their assistance from.
- 13:53And we know for a fact that the original Tesla roadster was a Lotus Elise.
- 13:56There was rumors that the Tesla model S was actually a Jag, you
- 13:59know, stuff like that, I don't know how much of it is truth or fiction.
- 14:02It doesn't really matter.
- 14:03But at the end of the day, everybody that's bought a Tesla right now.
- 14:06You got what you got, and I hope you're happy with it.
- 14:09But everybody's excited about the latest operating system update.
- 14:13So Tesla, they're not offering you a new body package or wheels, like these
- 14:17guys are doing out in California, where they've devoted, you know, a new,
- 14:22you know, aftermarket business to it.
- 14:24But Tesla is a software company at the end of the day, right?
- 14:26So I, one of the guys I know that had one at work, he said, Oh yeah, they just
- 14:31installed a What cup man or some arcade game on my dashboard on the tesla i'm
- 14:35like why who cares this isn't a phone This isn't a game boy to your point.
- 14:40Tanya.
- 14:41I mean Audi's got an advantage right they've been around since
- 14:44When cars were invented, basically, if you look at their history, yes,
- 14:47people, Audi did exist before 2000.
- 14:51They've been around since the early 1900s.
- 14:53As a matter of fact, there's a lot of innovation.
- 14:55There's a lot of research in there.
- 14:57There's a lot of, you know, they've always been on the cutting
- 14:58edge of the VAG family, right?
- 15:01Where it's like, ah, well, we'll use Audi to experiment on the latest and greatest
- 15:04thing that they're going to come up with.
- 15:06But to your point, they've got cars that look good.
- 15:09They've got cars that handle well.
- 15:10They've got cars that are proven in all sorts of weather conditions,
- 15:14and they have a reputation.
- 15:16They have racing pedigree.
- 15:17They have a history there that, you know, other manufacturers do and don't have, but
- 15:22Tesla is definitely not on that do list.
- 15:25And once they do catch up.
- 15:28And they can find a battery manufacturer, maybe they come up with their own.
- 15:31Maybe it's, you know, Bosch comes up with it or Siemens,
- 15:34or they get it from Samsung.
- 15:35Then they will leapfrog over these startups, right?
- 15:39And just like a startup IT company, I think Tesla will be swallowed.
- 15:43I've been saying it for years.
- 15:44It's going to take a minute for it to catch up, but they'll eventually,
- 15:47they'll get absorbed by the board.
- 15:49I think what the, it was the new CEO at Audi said is correct.
- 15:55Yes, they are behind all of the.
- 15:57All of the car manufacturers right now are behind Tesla.
- 16:00But I don't think it's something that they need to worry about.
- 16:02They are behind, but they've got the infrastructure behind them that
- 16:05they can catch up really quickly.
- 16:06Because they know how to make a car, as Eric was saying.
- 16:09Tesla knows how to make software, but are they really that great at making a car?
- 16:12I mean, there's all kinds of videos out there about Tesla's build quality.
- 16:16I think the, uh, car manufacturers don't have any problems.
- 16:19Yes, they need to come out with something soon, and Audi's got the e tron now.
- 16:23Uh, and then they've got things planned in the future, but I don't think they
- 16:28really need to worry at the end of the day, cars are not software and I've seen
- 16:33it myself writing in Tesla's where you have poor, you know, door seals and bad
- 16:38bill quality and things that are just kind of shoddy and almost look like
- 16:42they were just haphazardly put together.
- 16:43You can't roll out a software patch to fix a leaking door, right?
- 16:48These are things that, you know, Volkswagen, Audi group
- 16:50figured out forever ago.
- 16:52You know, and now for them, maybe they take for granted that, Oh,
- 16:55we can make a door that seals, you know, to, to 200 fathoms underwater
- 16:59because we've done all the research.
- 17:01I don't think the Teslas are there and it's going to take a long time for
- 17:04them to catch up on the build quality of a Mercedes or a BMW, or even that
- 17:09Porsche that we were talking about.
- 17:11It's, it's when, you know, you spend 250 grand on a 911.
- 17:14Look at what you're getting for 250 grand, right?
- 17:17But you get my idea.
- 17:18There's something to be said about craftsmanship.
- 17:20The attention to detail versus this mentality of like
- 17:25software, slap it together.
- 17:27The users will figure out where the bugs are and let us know, and then
- 17:30we'll fix it down the road, right?
- 17:32That just doesn't work.
- 17:33But I will say that my, my 2001 Audi S8 that I had.
- 17:37Flooded after every thunderstorm.
- 17:39So it took him a while to figure out the leaking in the seals and stuff like that.
- 17:44Every Mark four with the sunroof leaks.
- 17:46I mean, let's get serious, right?
- 17:48Exactly.
- 17:48So, so Tesla is not too far behind on that respect.
- 17:51No, 30 years.
- 17:52That's all.
- 17:54All right, moving on.
- 17:55So we've got next.
- 17:56We've got Tanya apparently wants to talk about an electric Bugatti.
- 18:00I think it's the alternative to that 35, 000 Tesla package.
- 18:03What else could you buy for 35 K?
- 18:06Okay.
- 18:06What else?
- 18:06Indeed.
- 18:07So I like the news article title that I saw Bugatti is selling a
- 18:1335, 000 electric car for kids.
- 18:17And I read that and just said, what are you kidding me?
- 18:21I think an alternative title might have worked here.
- 18:24They could have used Bugatti.
- 18:26Rich people doing rich people things again.
- 18:37What happened to the couple hundred dollar, you know, pow pow power wheels?
- 18:41As a kid, I remember seeing, you know, oh, they have a power wheels.
- 18:44They must be rich.
- 18:45They got a lot of money.
- 18:47In hindsight, those poor destitute people.
- 18:49I mean, I don't know how they got by with their plastic power wheels.
- 18:54So, but this article is about the Bugatti Baby 2, and yes, 2, it
- 19:00means there was a 1 before it.
- 19:02So Mr.
- 19:03Bugatti, uh, he made the Baby 1 for his son, his 8 year old son at the time.
- 19:09I mean, sure, you're Bugatti, why not, right?
- 19:11But the Baby 2, this is geared towards teenagers.
- 19:17So we heard it starts at that modest 35, 000.
- 19:21It doesn't look like a Chiron or Veyron or anything like that.
- 19:24It's a replica of the 1920s.
- 19:28Type 35 Bugatti, if you're familiar with that, same Bugatti blue and everything.
- 19:33Right.
- 19:33You've got that base model that's at 35, 000, but there are two upgrade
- 19:38versions that you could choose starting at 50, 000 or up to 68, 000 or 75,
- 19:45000, depending on the article you read.
- 19:47And they come with the speed key.
- 19:50Now, if you're familiar with the Chiron, the Chiron has a speed key,
- 19:54which unlocks the pow pow power.
- 19:57So the models are the vitesse, French for speed, and the pure sang, pure blood.
- 20:03And when you engage the speed key, these pre learner's permit drivers
- 20:08can get up to 42 miles an hour.
- 20:11And drive it in the driveway, because they're not street legal.
- 20:15So I'm not really sure where these people are going, but I'm gonna suppose
- 20:19that if you have 70, 000 to spend on your child's toy, that the grounds you
- 20:24live on probably are pretty impressive, so there's Space to go driving?
- 20:29I don't know.
- 20:30There's a lot of, I have a lot of questions here.
- 20:31I don't know about you guys.
- 20:32Mainly mine are why?
- 20:35And the only thing I could come up with was rich people, rich people things.
- 20:38Well, my immediate answer was it's French and I was just going to leave it there.
- 20:42I would need to buy two of them just so I can wear them around the shoes.
- 20:46I think it's cool.
- 20:48Let's just say you have the budget and you were like, man, I want the
- 20:51coolest go kart that I can buy.
- 20:53And it's a replica Bugatti type 35.
- 20:56I mean.
- 20:56Yeah, that's pretty slick.
- 20:58What go karts could you buy for 35, 000 that would go faster?
- 21:01You can buy legitimate shifter karts for less money than that.
- 21:04But here you go, you can buy your Bugatti go kart for 68, 000 or you can
- 21:10buy your little shifter kart for 15, 000 and dump, you know, 50, 000 into it.
- 21:16And completely blow it out of the water for half the cost.
- 21:19That's what Tesla's doing now.
- 21:20Can I drive it at Pike's Peak?
- 21:21Yes.
- 21:22Ah, we're set.
- 21:23That's what the real reason is.
- 21:25Now we're gonna do Junior Pike's Peak Hill Climb in Bugatti electric replicas.
- 21:31This is how it's gonna go.
- 21:32And then we can claim that we're faster than a 1980 Chevette.
- 21:36Let's just claim that we're faster than a 911 GT3 RS.
- 21:40Does that work?
- 21:40Who's gonna compare them?
- 21:42Ah, that's true.
- 21:42That's very true.
- 21:44I like this plan.
- 21:45What do we got next?
- 21:46We gotta dodge.
- 21:47What?
- 21:48A do a what?
- 21:49We are taking 200 steps back, and we've gotta dodge Demon.
- 21:55That's right, people.
- 21:55Wait, wait, wait.
- 21:55You're talking about the Challenger.
- 21:57No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 21:58I'm talking about the Miata.
- 22:00Excuse me?
- 22:01So hear me out.
- 22:02So back in 2007, before the Challenger, Dodge was thinking
- 22:06about making a Miata killer.
- 22:08Well, a Miata competitor, not really a killer.
- 22:10And they gave the Demon nameplate to this little two seat roadster
- 22:15convertible thing that they were going to release to compete with the Miata.
- 22:19It had 2.
- 22:194 liters in line for about 172 horsepower, 165 pound feet of torque.
- 22:24Compared that to the Mazda Miata, it was two liters, four cylinder, 170
- 22:30And, yeah, this was gonna be the demon.
- 22:33So, wait, wait, wait.
- 22:34Was it front wheel drive?
- 22:35No, it was rear wheel drive, and it had a six speed manual transmission.
- 22:39Oh, wow.
- 22:40I wonder who they borrowed that drivetrain from.
- 22:42Cause I was gonna say, if it was front wheel drive, it was a Neon re skinned.
- 22:45Cause, you know, that time period.
- 22:47I'm sure all this happened after 2007, but I'm wondering,
- 22:50maybe it was an SLK underneath.
- 22:52Maybe it was like a Chrysler Crossfire.
- 22:54So yeah, that could be a possibility that it was maybe a precursor to the crossfire.
- 22:59We'd have to dig into that a little bit more, but oddly enough, all joking
- 23:03aside, it's kind of, I don't, I hate this word, but it's serendipitous
- 23:07that this showed up this week on grassroots motorsports, because we
- 23:10just talk to one of our members about.
- 23:13Trying to fit himself in a Dodge Demon when it was at an auto show.
- 23:17And it made for a very funny story, which you guys will hear
- 23:19on a later podcast episode.
- 23:21But we thought it was kind of cool that this came up, maybe big brothers
- 23:24listening or Skynet or the Borg or somebody, but we're going to post
- 23:28the article so you can check it out about this little known concept car.
- 23:32And we're going to talk more about concept cars in a follow on episode, which is a.
- 23:36kind of carry on from an article we wrote a couple years ago entitled,
- 23:40Good Ideas and Bad Execution.
- 23:42So we'll probably revisit the Dodge Demon concept a little later in the year.
- 23:46Good pull there, Brad.
- 23:47Since we're talking about concept cars, have you guys seen the
- 23:50rendering of the new Fiero?
- 23:52Yes.
- 23:54It looks like a Monte Carlo.
- 23:55Yeah, it looks like a Monte Carlo or a third gen Camaro.
- 23:58It looks like trash.
- 23:59I'm just going to say it.
- 24:00I'm just going to come out and say it.
- 24:01It's a turd.
- 24:02I mean, I had this reaction, like, when you were a kid, surfing the internet,
- 24:07and all of a sudden something popped up on the screen and you're trying to close
- 24:09it as fast as you can because you know it's something you don't want to load.
- 24:12That was my reaction to the new Fiero.
- 24:15I was like, close this browser window immediately, block the pop up.
- 24:19I want to say that the Fiero, there's no good looking Fiero.
- 24:22The only good, the best Fiero picture I've ever seen.
- 24:26Was when I was about 10 years old and there was like a half naked woman
- 24:30with giant breasts and like blonde hair sitting on the hood of it.
- 24:32That was the best Fiero picture because I didn't have to look at the Fiero.
- 24:36I just had to look at the girl.
- 24:39The Fiero was a turd.
- 24:41It still is a turd.
- 24:43It's the biggest piece of shit.
- 24:45Whatever.
- 24:46The Fiero I hate it.
- 24:47I hate that part.
- 24:48To give the Fiero a little bit of credit.
- 24:51Credit where credit is due.
- 24:53Makes an awesome kit car.
- 24:54If you want to have a fake Ferrari, but I think they only got it right in the last
- 24:59year with the two M six and all the other things, when they finally figured it out,
- 25:04they were like, all right, we're done.
- 25:05We're not going to make it anymore.
- 25:06They do still hold a decent value, especially those last couple of
- 25:10years of the Fiero, the early cars.
- 25:12I think they've all just turned back into.
- 25:14Rust and dirt at this point.
- 25:16You don't see too many of them on the road.
- 25:18I think if I got the opportunity and somebody handed me the keys,
- 25:21I would drive it to say I did.
- 25:23But I wouldn't probably ever tell anybody about it.
- 25:26I would, I wouldn't drive it because I can't fit in it.
- 25:29But I would push it off a cliff.
- 25:31I also think that the other thing that, It just had all the GM stuff.
- 25:37To include the T tops, right?
- 25:39You're just like, oh man.
- 25:40Every 80s GM trope.
- 25:42We had to put it into that car.
- 25:44But I love the T tops.
- 25:45I had T tops on both my Camaros and I thought they were fantastic.
- 25:48I'm not a T top guy.
- 25:49It's just, I've grown out of sunroofs and T tops for me,
- 25:53it's like, oh god, I don't know.
- 25:54It's one more thing to leak.
- 25:56Would I like to see the Fiero come back?
- 25:58Yes.
- 25:59But as the C8 Corvette instead, like, I don't know, I'm still hung up on the
- 26:04whole idea of the mid engine Corvette.
- 26:06It could have been called something else.
- 26:08Maybe the Fiero, maybe the Corvair.
- 26:10Do I want to see whatever this, I don't know, abomination, a good word for
- 26:15it is, it is not a pleasant looking car, especially with today's design
- 26:20cues in mind, it's just, like you said, it's a combination of things.
- 26:23It does go back to the Monte Carlo.
- 26:26I could see them building a Monte Carlo off of this, maybe some sort of GNX.
- 26:29Modern thing, but I don't know this seems to be a recurring theme with GM
- 26:34because right after the Bronco came out GM decided they were gonna throw
- 26:39out a blazer Tease and and do a two door blazer like in the old days and
- 26:43so we're gonna post a link to that as well What did you guys think of that?
- 26:46I actually have to look at it again.
- 26:49That's how much attention I paid it Well, while she's looking at it
- 26:54again, I think it's really cool.
- 26:55Now, was this a rendering that GM actually did, or was this something
- 26:58that somebody else put out hoping that GM was going to do this?
- 27:01Because I know GM released the Blazer crossover a year or two ago.
- 27:07Too much, you know, complaints and criticism by the public,
- 27:12and I think they're just trying to save face at this point.
- 27:15If they're the ones that releases it's too little too late.
- 27:18I think the article that we read said that it was going to be a little bit softer.
- 27:22It was going to be more like the everyday off roader.
- 27:25So it's going to have off road capability.
- 27:28But it's going to be more user friendly for, I guess, everyday
- 27:31driving around on the road.
- 27:32If anybody who's owned a Wrangler, I've owned two of them.
- 27:35I've never owned a Bronco, but I can imagine it's probably very similar.
- 27:39They are not fun to drive on the road.
- 27:41I mean, I made it fun to drive just because I liked, you know, balling
- 27:44down the street in a lifted Wrangler.
- 27:46But they are not comfortable.
- 27:48There's no room in them.
- 27:49They're terrible just to drive down to the grocery store.
- 27:52You have to really enjoy driving a Wrangler.
- 27:55And I think this is supposed to Grab those customers that want that look in
- 28:00that that kind of Wrangler feel or that they want to look like the lifestyle But
- 28:05they don't actually want to participate in it kind of like athleisure wear
- 28:08the people that want to look like they work out But they don't work out.
- 28:11I think this is the athleisure wear of the straight up yoga pants my
- 28:16problem with the retro cars is If you're going to do retro, do it right.
- 28:21And I got to tip my hat to Chrysler.
- 28:22I know a lot of people call me a closet fan boy, but that's one
- 28:26thing that Fiat's done right.
- 28:28And even kind of Mercedes kind of set the stage there when they went and
- 28:32did the Challenger and the Charger at first, I didn't like it, but the new
- 28:35one is really actually kind of cool and everything they're trying to do.
- 28:38And you know, the Durango was supposed to be the Grand Wagoneer and call
- 28:41it what you want badge engineering.
- 28:42But at the end of the day.
- 28:44They did retro, right?
- 28:45They look the way they're supposed to.
- 28:47They, they outperform most everybody's expectations, but to build a retro car
- 28:53and then end up basically with the FJ, you know, that weird two door thing that
- 28:58Toyota came up with, which was supposed to hark back to the, you know, the
- 29:01sixties and seventies, it was too soft.
- 29:03It was too blobby.
- 29:04It was like a marshmallow on wheels.
- 29:07And does it really have any off road capability?
- 29:09No, you, if you want to offer a capability, go buy a Jeep.
- 29:11Go buy something else.
- 29:12Right?
- 29:13If you're gonna make a blazer, make a blazer.
- 29:15If you're gonna make a Bronco, make a Bronco.
- 29:17Don't give me a Mach E and then put different sheet metal on top of it.
- 29:21So build something right, body on frame, build it the way people want
- 29:25it, because all you're gonna do is end up with people disappointed.
- 29:28And like you said at the beginning of this, The new blazer that came out is
- 29:33a slap in the face to people that have square body blazers or early, you know,
- 29:37blazers and all that kind of stuff because it's an equinox with a new badge on it.
- 29:42Let's, let's just face it, right?
- 29:43And it has nothing to do with the blazer.
- 29:46Again, I say kudos to GM, but I agree with you.
- 29:50It's a day late, a dollar short because they've been talking about the Bronco for.
- 29:54What five plus years now, like they've been teasing that it's coming.
- 29:57I'm glad it's finally here.
- 29:59I know people are putting deposits on it and I think it's going to
- 30:01be popular just like the Maquis.
- 30:03And I think Ford did the right thing by sunsetting cars like the
- 30:07Mondeo and the focus and things that just really weren't selling well.
- 30:10And they're bringing out something exciting and GM.
- 30:14I don't know.
- 30:14I just think they're, they're playing catch up, you know, and I think the
- 30:17Corvette was a fail and that was the most exciting thing they had, right?
- 30:20Because what else did GM really have right now that gets you interested
- 30:24in coming into the dealership?
- 30:25You know, I actually used to be a GM fan boy and my family, you know, when
- 30:29I was growing up With the exception of my 91 Honda Civic, all we had were GMs.
- 30:34We had a Caprice.
- 30:35We had numerous pickup trucks All GM, all Chevy Silverados, but with
- 30:40what they've been putting out lately, I would say from 98, 99 to now.
- 30:46It's all terrible.
- 30:48I mean, there's not one car with the exception of the Corvette, which I
- 30:50don't fit in, so don't even try it.
- 30:52There's not one car that I would buy of theirs.
- 30:55It's, it's terrible.
- 30:56I will say, and not to diverge too far off, I will say the Impala is pretty nice
- 31:01as an everyday kind of full size sedan.
- 31:05We're probably going to see that car disappear, but they finally got that
- 31:08right because the ones previous to the current one were pretty terrible.
- 31:12But that's the only thing that I'd be like, yeah, I'd consider a GM.
- 31:15It'd be pretty much that.
- 31:16And a CTS, CTSV of some sort.
- 31:19I had the unfortunate displeasure to have to be inside multiple
- 31:26mid 2000 generation Impalas.
- 31:29Oh my gosh, those are the worst.
- 31:32No offense to anybody.
- 31:33I cannot.
- 31:34Stand those cars.
- 31:36I will never ever.
- 31:39I don't care if the new one is nice or not terrible.
- 31:43Wait, were you in the back seat behind plexiglass and barred doors or?
- 31:47No, I was driving it and the thing had 20, 000 miles on it and it drove
- 31:52like it had 220, 000 miles on it.
- 31:55It was horrific.
- 31:58I can't imagine someone.
- 32:00Willingly went to a dealership and gave up their hard earned money for one of these.
- 32:05That's how passionately I feel dislike for them.
- 32:09I think they went to Enterprise and got a rental and just forgot to return it.
- 32:13And I think that's how all these people ended up owning Impalas.
- 32:16They just forgot to return them.
- 32:17And I think Enterprise was fine with that.
- 32:20I think they were too.
- 32:21And I can hear mountain man Dan right now.
- 32:22Well, you know, that's cause you're used to that sport tune, Bill
- 32:25Stein suspension, you know, in your German cars, you got to embrace
- 32:29the mattress suspension of that GM.
- 32:35Sure.
- 32:36Where's my dromamine motion sickness medication.
- 32:41So let's jump, let's jump to this new.
- 32:44New, but old since we talked about retro before Morgan is bringing a car next
- 32:50year is what I'm to understand 2021.
- 32:52Yeah, so when did BMW buy Morgan?
- 32:56Like when did that happen?
- 32:57That's all I'm gonna start with that That's the thing that I was a little
- 33:03bit unclear on because I didn't know that there were any British wholly
- 33:07owned Companies anymore in terms of auto manufacturers, they'll be kind
- 33:10of either bought up by the Indians or, you know, the Germans or, or whoever.
- 33:14So I was like, ah, Morgan.
- 33:16So when I, when I read about the BMW cooperation, their collaboration effort,
- 33:20I was like, oh, that's interesting.
- 33:21And now it does look like.
- 33:23Every other Morgan from back in the day, which they're hard to tell apart.
- 33:27Like, you know, there will be an episode coming out where we interview two
- 33:31members and one of them has a Morgan plus eight and it's like an 85 or 86.
- 33:37And I, to me, it looks like a 1956.
- 33:39I mean, they all kind of look the same and the new one harks back to the same thing.
- 33:42So it's.
- 33:43It's a retro car, but I mean, they're still using the same size and
- 33:47dimensions and bucks and wooden frame.
- 33:49And so is it really, is it really new?
- 33:51Or is it just got a new engine in it?
- 33:53You know, I, I don't know.
- 33:54From what I read, it's, it's completely new.
- 33:56I mean, yeah, it's still using wood, but they, they've got control arms all around.
- 34:00They're no longer using leaf springs in the back and the live
- 34:03axle, and they've got more power out of it, thanks to the BMW.
- 34:07In line four.
- 34:09It's supposed to be a wider car.
- 34:10So people larger than, you know, five foot seven, you know, can fit
- 34:15in it comfortably, I guess, and it's, it's supposed to be a brand new car.
- 34:18It gets up to 149 miles per hour.
- 34:21It's 0 to 60 in 4.
- 34:223 to 4.
- 34:237 seconds.
- 34:24It's, I mean, it's not too shabby for the low price of well, see, that's the thing.
- 34:29It's the 4th of the price of the GT three RS.
- 34:33It's, it's 70 grand.
- 34:34They're not being sold as production cars.
- 34:36They're being sold.
- 34:38They're using the loophole because they don't sell a lot of vehicles
- 34:41here in the United States.
- 34:43So they're not selling it as like an auto manufacturer, it's like a kit car.
- 34:46It's going to be sold as a kit car, much like the three wheeler that's
- 34:50sold here now, which I love by the way.
- 34:52I would never be able to own one, but I love them.
- 34:54They're sold as motorcycles.
- 34:55So the internet, Oracle of all things, it is It's not owned
- 35:00by anybody but themselves.
- 35:02They are still the Morgan Motor Company.
- 35:05Um, I think they have an, uh, apparently an Italian investment group, um,
- 35:09maybe is backing them right now, but their parent organization is still
- 35:13the Morgan Motor Company Limited.
- 35:15All right.
- 35:15So let's switch gears.
- 35:16Let's talk about, you know, we've talked about a lot of different
- 35:18cars and retro cars, whatever.
- 35:20Let's talk about a car that never came to the States, was
- 35:23never destined for the States.
- 35:25But has to be one of the coolest cars you've never seen or never heard of.
- 35:30And maybe some of you have, if you're a, if you're a, a German
- 35:33car fanatic, like some of us are, we posted a video to a recently
- 35:38released wide body conversion on a VW.
- 35:43SP2.
- 35:44And for those that don't know what an SP2 is, it was presented in 1971 as Project X.
- 35:52The SP2 is a sports car developed by Volkswagen of
- 35:55Brazil for the Brazilian market.
- 35:57And was produced from 1972 to 1976.
- 36:01It's actually built as a variant on top of the carbon GIA chassis
- 36:05and was equipped with a 1.
- 36:077 liter flat four over that four year period, 11, 000 units
- 36:12were produced in South America.
- 36:14There was a short lived and very unpopular SP one.
- 36:17That came out before and there was actually an SP3 prototype, which in my
- 36:21opinion is better looking and we can post some links to all that stuff where
- 36:24you guys can look it up on Wikipedia.
- 36:26But this particular wide body car came across my desk and I was
- 36:30completely glued to the screen.
- 36:32It is gorgeous.
- 36:34It is a color that I don't understand.
- 36:37Uh, it changes because it is technically midnight blue as, as the title of
- 36:41the video, which you don't really see until the second half, but wow, what an
- 36:47amazing bill, the guy that put that car together, it's, it's really, really cool.
- 36:50And you definitely got to check it out.
- 36:52So I know you guys watched it.
- 36:53How about some feedback?
- 36:54I don't actually think it's a real car.
- 36:56I think it's all CGI because I follow, I follow that guy on Instagram and stuff.
- 37:02And he's got a whole bunch of different renderings and stuff.
- 37:05I, I could be wrong and the listeners will tell me where they
- 37:08won't because nobody's listening.
- 37:10But I think that it's, I think it's all CGI.
- 37:13I don't think it's a real car.
- 37:14That's why you get the color change because it starts out as gray.
- 37:17And then it's, then it's midnight blue all of a sudden.
- 37:20I think the gray is when he's first.
- 37:22You know, like, like the first draft or whatever.
- 37:24I don't think it's an actual real car.
- 37:26But the videos of the car going down the road and just kind of
- 37:29watching the suspension travel and, you know, and everything like that.
- 37:33If it is CGI, it's damn good.
- 37:35Watch the driver.
- 37:36The driver's head does not move.
- 37:38Oh, I was just annoyed at the audio track being so loud.
- 37:41You couldn't hear the sound of the engine.
- 37:43It's like, can we turn that down?
- 37:45It's fabulous music, but please.
- 37:48I'm interested in the sound of the engine.
- 37:50And I wanted to downshift.
- 37:51And I wanted to see him go bruhhh.
- 37:54Nothing.
- 37:54There was a moment there where you did hear the car And it sounded
- 37:58like it was a six cylinder.
- 38:00Uh, I don't, I couldn't tell if it was a flat or a VR of some sort, you
- 38:03know, like all those crazy, all those crazy conversions out there, but
- 38:07you know, that is a rear engine car.
- 38:08I mean, obviously built on the carbon gear chassis, so you could fit probably a lot
- 38:11of things back there, but rendering or not you guys, come on, it's a sexy car.
- 38:17I mean, it's, I think the only detractor is that nose and that's, it's a face.
- 38:23Only a mama can love, you know, it's kind of goofy, but I thought about it.
- 38:28If the SP two had a different nose, then it would just be
- 38:32kind of a weird looking nine 11.
- 38:34I like the SP two, even just to stop on.
- 38:36I mean, it's different.
- 38:37I like different, I like all those.
- 38:39It was older cars, so I mean with the wide body kit, it definitely looks nice.
- 38:43I mean, there, there could be some slight different fits and finishes
- 38:46that you could do, but I mean, overall it was an attractive car.
- 38:50I thought it was really cool looking.
- 38:51It actually reminded me a lot of like a 280z or like an older Z car.
- 38:55I thought it was really cool.
- 38:57I don't fit in them, so I don't care, but I think it looks good.
- 39:01Somebody else would have a lot of fun with that car.
- 39:03I, I would.
- 39:04A hundred percent.
- 39:05So bad.
- 39:07And for, you know, the only SP2 you can own in the United States, not
- 39:11imported through the gray market, you can pick up at your local
- 39:14Walmart because Hot Wheels has cast them for the last couple of years.
- 39:17And I have a small collection of SP2s here at the house.
- 39:20So just letting you know, you know, they only cost about a dollar.
- 39:23So it's a huge savings over that Tesla we talked about earlier.
- 39:26So let's go to our last bit of industry news.
- 39:28Yeah, we're going full circle here, right back to the electric
- 39:31talk that we started with.
- 39:33Oh, why?
- 39:34Oh, but this is nice.
- 39:36This is fun.
- 39:37This is, this is electric buses.
- 39:39It's the Gary Busey, right?
- 39:43So there's a German company called Electric Brands, and they're developing
- 39:48a modular electric bus that's not just a bus, it's a pickup truck,
- 39:52it's a camper van, and much more.
- 39:54It's called the eBusey.
- 39:56An unfortunate name, but maybe they'll change it, you know, right off the bat.
- 40:00I'm thinking, you know, this thing actually gets made and sold.
- 40:02Is this a competitor to VW's ID buzz, which you haven't heard the buzz
- 40:08about the buzz ID buzz is the new VW bus, the iconic love and hippies
- 40:16bus that we know the type two, the transporter, as it was called, and this.
- 40:21This e bussy is very reminiscent of the Type 2.
- 40:25Uh, the Type 2 came in a wide variety of configurations.
- 40:30You know, it had the panels, it had the flatbed, the pickup truck, the
- 40:34Westfalia was the camper van, and so on.
- 40:36So the e bussy is going to have two chassis options.
- 40:39It's going to have urban and it's going to have off road.
- 40:41It's also going to have 10 configurations from bus to flatbed pickup truck to
- 40:47traditional pickup with the side walls to camper van and so on, just to name a few.
- 40:53Now, the other interesting thing about this bus, since it's so modular,
- 40:57so not just removing panels and reconfiguring it like Legos steering
- 41:03and the pedals are not mechanical as is modern day drive by wire, right?
- 41:09You will be able.
- 41:12To slide the steering wheel and pedals left to right in the cabin.
- 41:16So you can go from left hand drive to right hand drive.
- 41:21Which is very interesting.
- 41:22I'm not sure useful, but interesting.
- 41:25Can I sit in the middle like a McLaren?
- 41:27Actually, you can.
- 41:29I watched a video on it and there seems to be three positions.
- 41:32Left, center, and middle.
- 41:34And you kind of rearrange the panel box in the dashboard, apparently.
- 41:40So, alright, you've got that.
- 41:43Aesthetically, if you haven't seen it, I would categorize it as, quote, cute.
- 41:48I mean, if there was a sequel to WALL E, this would be the
- 41:52star, and it would convert into a wheelchair moving the humans around.
- 41:57It's Wheely.
- 42:00Voiced by Gary Busey.
- 42:02Yes.
- 42:04Disney, give us a call.
- 42:07We got this figured out.
- 42:08Okay, so some more about the bus here.
- 42:11So it's not very heavy.
- 42:12It's 1000 to 1300 pounds.
- 42:14I'm sure that's based on what the chassis is.
- 42:17It's only going to be all wheel drive.
- 42:19Um, it's also going to have 20 horsepower, but 737 foot pounds of
- 42:26torque, which to me sounds incredible in such a small, light vehicle.
- 42:33It's going to do a wheel stand.
- 42:36I'm getting excited.
- 42:37The smaller 10 kilowatt battery, it's going to get you about 120 miles of range,
- 42:41but there is a 30 kilowatt battery that will get you around 370 miles of range.
- 42:45In terms of price, we're talking on the low end and 18, 000 on the higher end.
- 42:50If you want to go off road camper version, um, it's closer to 33, 000 do
- 42:56not foresee, unfortunately, I guess, this ever coming to America and despite
- 43:01it being clearly influenced by the.
- 43:04VW Type 2.
- 43:05I'm not sure it's going to be a competitor to the ID Buzz.
- 43:09I actually think, because if you've seen images of it as a flatbed or a pickup
- 43:14truck, it reminds me of the little three wheeled trucks that run around Italy.
- 43:19Oh, yeah.
- 43:20The Apes.
- 43:22Yeah.
- 43:22The Piaggio.
- 43:23And Ape, fun fact, is being Italian and they've been around since
- 43:281948 and they've been making this little three wheeled delight.
- 43:32I mean, it's a Vespa with a truck bed on it.
- 43:35I mean, they're fantastic, really.
- 43:37I mean, Piaggio is the company that made, makes Vespa.
- 43:41So, I mean, it's not a leap that they got there.
- 43:43So.
- 43:44Considering how the off days use where it runs around small city towns,
- 43:49and, you know, it's very commercial.
- 43:50You've got guys just doing maintenance things running around doing deliveries,
- 43:54commercial things of that nature.
- 43:56You know, this, I would see actually, it's more of a competitor.
- 44:00To them, then, you know, I'm going to cruise around town in my VW bus
- 44:05that doesn't, you know, turn into a transformer, but I can see this
- 44:08competing with the transit to the for transit because they they've
- 44:12got different configurations.
- 44:13I mean, they don't have a pickup truck configuration, but you can get different
- 44:16van sizes and you can get the tall 1, the short 1, a little bit longer.
- 44:20So I would see it as a competitor for that.
- 44:22Two questions.
- 44:23One, do I fit?
- 44:25Would I sit in the center and nobody on either side of me?
- 44:28And then two, is it just me or does the logo look like the Bugatti logo?
- 44:33Is this a Bugatti bussy?
- 44:35Bugatti bussy?
- 44:37You would cost a lot more if it was.
- 44:39Yes, true.
- 44:40And there was no mention of a speed key.
- 44:42No, okay, okay.
- 44:43What I really want to know is What does it do at Pike's Peak,
- 44:47and what can I compare it to?
- 44:48Is there a 35, 000 Ascension R package for it?
- 44:52It might be coming.
- 44:54And if it did, would you buy one?
- 44:55I mean, honestly, I would go look at one.
- 44:59It's like your electric Fiat Panda.
- 45:01Alright, I'm putting it in the universe.
- 45:03We need a Fiat Panda.
- 45:04Fiat's here in the us It's gotta happen, but it's gotta look good.
- 45:08We need to be on the retro panda wagon, not the new, the new panda.
- 45:14Least that's have gotten the Jordan one drive.
- 45:17One of those I one day maybe we'll drive one of the older ones.
- 45:21Alright, so let's go behind the pit wall and just let's do some local news
- 45:25real quick before we get into some of the fun stuff and, and, and wrap up.
- 45:28Today's episode.
- 45:29So real quick, HOD has put out a call for coaches for all August events.
- 45:34That's Pocono summit point and pit race.
- 45:36So if you're a coach and you're willing and able to help, please
- 45:39reach out to Kenny Ivner at Ken E that's K E N E at hooked on driving.
- 45:44com for more information.
- 45:46More importantly, HOD has changed the format of their August
- 45:49eight, nine summit point event.
- 45:51It is no longer three days and is no longer on three tracks.
- 45:54It is now two full days on summit point main.
- 45:58You can find more details about that particular event at www.
- 46:01hookedondriving.
- 46:02com and then click on Northeast and it'll show up there.
- 46:05But more importantly, HOD has authorized GTM to extend our
- 46:09discount to any of our listeners.
- 46:11So if you're interested in participating in this event, you
- 46:14can use our discount code of GTM10 during checkout and save yourself 10
- 46:19percent on the Summit Point entry fee.
- 46:21Now some COVID related changes to the track world and to the
- 46:25motorsports world in our local area.
- 46:27This may apply to areas outside of the DMV, but I'm just going
- 46:31to pass this information along.
- 46:32If you're interested in tracks in our area like NJMP, Summit Point, etc.
- 46:36EMRA, the Eastern Motorsports Racing Association, they've recently put out a
- 46:40press release talking about how Travel restrictions within New York, New
- 46:44Jersey, and Connecticut have changed.
- 46:46There's a lot of States now that are on basically a no fly list.
- 46:49And that is causing issues with registration at events and locations
- 46:53like NJP Watkins Glen, et cetera.
- 46:56As of the 23rd of July, they had said they were very short of registrations.
- 47:00And they were on the verge of potentially cancelling the event
- 47:03because many people from outside the area weren't able to participate.
- 47:06With that being said, they were supposed to follow up the same day and they didn't.
- 47:10But I recently checked their website, emrahracing.
- 47:14org, under upcoming events.
- 47:15And the event for August was still listed on their website.
- 47:19It's two days at NJMP Lightning.
- 47:21And then they do have some follow on events later in the season
- 47:24that you can look up as well.
- 47:26If you plan on going to any of the events, Make sure you check
- 47:29what state the event is in and if that state has any restrictions
- 47:33for who can come into the state.
- 47:35We had 1 guy at Watkins Glen get turned away because he was from Maryland.
- 47:40Another guy almost got turned away because he lived in Florida,
- 47:43but he had a Delaware license.
- 47:45I mean, he had a Delaware property and he was able to use that
- 47:48address to get into the then.
- 47:50So.
- 47:50Be very careful what you register for and make sure that you can actually go.
- 47:54Exactly.
- 47:55And stay tuned because changes are happening all the time.
- 47:59Uh, and every state is different and state by state.
- 48:01So, you know, there's events happening all over the country as
- 48:04of, you know, the beginning of June.
- 48:06So, and we're going to talk about that a little bit more here.
- 48:09Another press release from SCCA.
- 48:11came out and the governor of West Virginia has outlined a status
- 48:16on West Virginia's recovery plan.
- 48:18It's kind of short and sweet to the point.
- 48:20They've changed a lot of their focus on different counties in West Virginia.
- 48:24The county that summit point is in is not affected.
- 48:26So they're basically, they're continuing to move forward with the
- 48:30way they've done business up until, you know, as the track had reopened.
- 48:33In June, the mandates for endure use of mass remains in place.
- 48:38So if you're a novice or intermediate student, you're required to go to
- 48:40class, you're required to wear a mask, you know, look at the guidance of the
- 48:44club to see if master required when you have a coach in the car, or if you're
- 48:48a coach, you know what the rules are they doing lead follow in car, etc.
- 48:52The good news for the DMV, especially for the WDCR region of SCCA is they're
- 48:57gonna move ahead with all of their scheduled programming, which means
- 49:01competition race school, which just happened, and, and Brad will talk about
- 49:04here in a second, as well as their chime trials, HBD events, auto crosses.
- 49:09Uh, all of that is gonna continue is to include the rally cross
- 49:13events at Summit Point, et cetera.
- 49:14So the Mars 2020 club racing season is now basically underway
- 49:20until Summit Point closes.
- 49:21In addition to that, I got a news flyer came across my desk with respect to our
- 49:27friends at National Corvette Museum.
- 49:28We've had the opportunity to go out there many times over the years.
- 49:32Great facility out in Bowling Green, Kentucky, just down the
- 49:35road from the Corvette factory.
- 49:36And I was shocked when I read the email, and I know a few other people
- 49:40have probably received this as well.
- 49:42It looks as though they have crammed their entire season into the month of August.
- 49:47They are doing HPD events, club racing, club driving, autocrosses, trek at
- 49:52the track, which is a walk, bike, run, Corvette C8 experience day, pro touring
- 49:57truck shootout all in the month of August and they're basically running events.
- 50:02Throughout the week and throughout the end, you can look up what's going
- 50:06on at ncmm by visiting motorsports park.org/events, and you can see the
- 50:11crazy schedule they have laid out.
- 50:13I wish I lived closer to ncm because I would probably jump
- 50:16in on some of these events.
- 50:17It's a really cool track, unlike anything else you've ever
- 50:20driven, because of factory test.
- 50:21Track is not a race track and NCM specifically is designed and
- 50:25modeled after down to, you know.
- 50:28inch scale of corners at Le Mans and Daytona and other places.
- 50:33It's a really interesting track to drive at.
- 50:35So if you're in the area or are planning on going out there,
- 50:38it's definitely worth doing.
- 50:40But again, check those state by state restrictions to make sure that you're
- 50:43allowed to travel, you know, into Kentucky, especially to go to NCM.
- 50:47In addition to that, two other pieces of news.
- 50:49If you're a fan of indoor carting, especially electric indoor carting,
- 50:53Autobahn Speedway, which has facilities all over the DMV, and now I believe
- 50:58in Pennsylvania and some other places, they have opened all of their locations.
- 51:02By reservation only.
- 51:04So if you want to go carting with your buddies, you want to do an Enduro,
- 51:08you can get a block of time, check out their website, autobahnspeed.
- 51:12com for more details.
- 51:14One of the things we were planning as a, as a club this year, as an extended
- 51:17cannonball was to try to go to the Canadian F1 Grand Prix, that event.
- 51:22Many people don't know is actually a limited number of people can go there
- 51:25because the track is on an island.
- 51:27You can't actually drive onto it.
- 51:28There's shuttles, things like that.
- 51:29It's very complicated logistically, and it sells out like within 24 to 48 hours.
- 51:34So we've been keeping an eye on it.
- 51:36We really wanted to go this year.
- 51:37We actually kind of missed our opportunity.
- 51:39But unfortunately and regrettably, the Canadian F1 circuit has responded and said
- 51:45that they are canceling the F1 Grand Prix.
- 51:48They're very disappointed.
- 51:49It's very difficult.
- 51:50It's very challenging.
- 51:51A lot of people traveling from all over Canada has
- 51:54different restrictions in the U.
- 51:55S.
- 51:55due to COVID.
- 51:57For people that already bought tickets.
- 51:59By the 27th of July, you should have received a communication from the Canadian
- 52:03F1 Grand Prix track about the status of your tickets and what they're going to do.
- 52:08They want to thank everybody for their loyalty, and they'll
- 52:11let you know, you know, when they can open the track back up.
- 52:13Um, well, this past weekend, the SCCA held their, their annual competition school.
- 52:19I think it's annual.
- 52:19There may be one or two a year.
- 52:21Two of our members, Matt Wood and Jordan Furman, both
- 52:25entered the school and passed.
- 52:26Matt Wood continued on through the weekend and competed in his
- 52:30first real SCCA sanctioned races.
- 52:32So let's give a round of applause to them.
- 52:36Congratulations guys.
- 52:37Also, I think the weekend before that, one of our other members,
- 52:40Sam Harrington, went to an event at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
- 52:45It was called the Jersey Devil Majors, where he finished first place in his
- 52:49race in his Formula Enterprise 2 car.
- 52:52So congratulations to Sam as well.
- 52:54And then other than that, I mean that's, that's pretty much it.
- 52:57The SCCA competition school is interesting.
- 53:00I was there and I worked with Matt and Jordan as pit crew.
- 53:05Because the way it works is you're in the classroom, you're in the
- 53:07car, in the classroom, in the car, just in and out all day long.
- 53:11Uh, you really don't have time to set up the car like you would at, at an
- 53:14HPDE event, so you need some help.
- 53:16It was very interesting.
- 53:17We hope to have them on later to get some more inside information about
- 53:20their experiences at the school, so please stay tuned for that.
- 53:23Switching to some international news, just some two pieces of information
- 53:27that came across our desk that we thought were a little bit interesting.
- 53:30Team Acura is separating from Penske at the end of this season.
- 53:35I know the IMSA season has been a bit of a wash.
- 53:37You know, some of it being done on iRacing this year and a lot of the races being
- 53:41done without spectators and, you know, IMSA TV is a little bit restricted.
- 53:45I wish it was a little bit more open like Red Bull TV is where I
- 53:48could actually watch the races.
- 53:49Acura's had an interesting history with Penske over the last You know, let's
- 53:54call it four or five years, but it seems as though they're going to kind
- 53:57of branch out on their own or maybe find a different major sponsor from what I
- 54:01read in the article from motorsport.
- 54:04com.
- 54:04It sounds like Acura is going to continue to participate with
- 54:08their Daytona prototype car, but they are just, you know, they're,
- 54:11they're looking for a new home.
- 54:13There was another article that came out that Some of our
- 54:15members got excited about that.
- 54:16McLaren is now set to bring the iconic Gulf oil brand back to
- 54:22formula one as part of a new sponsor.
- 54:25I don't know why.
- 54:27I mean, so here's the problem I have with it.
- 54:29I love the Gulf oil color scheme.
- 54:32It's been around since the sixties.
- 54:34I know that Gulf oil sponsor Bruce McLaren back in the old days of formula one, but.
- 54:39There was something in the article that stuck out at me and it was
- 54:41actually my initial gut reaction.
- 54:43And I'm just going to read the quote.
- 54:45The golf logo went on to become one of the most well known in motor racing.
- 54:50It was featured heavily in the 1971 movie Le Mans with Steve
- 54:54McQueen driving for the golf team.
- 54:56And I'm like, yeah, the golf logo, the golf livery, in my opinion, is synonymous.
- 55:03With the Porsche 917 and I know there's listeners that
- 55:06are out there going to tell me.
- 55:07Ah, you're full of it You don't know what you're talking about, but for me
- 55:11and maybe for a lot of our listeners.
- 55:13I just feel like there's a bigger mental relationship there between
- 55:17golf and Porsche like even The golf Porsches, right the golf Porsches.
- 55:22I don't really say the golf mclarens now.
- 55:24I know You know, back in the nineties when the, when the McLaren's
- 55:28went into IMSA with the, with the McLaren quote unquote F1, which was
- 55:32actually a, you know, BM BMW powered supercar, they bore the golf livery.
- 55:36But again, it's something I forgot about.
- 55:39And when somebody says golf livery, I think Porsche, what about you guys?
- 55:43I mean, they were also on the GT forties, right?
- 55:45That is correct, yes.
- 55:46With the Fords.
- 55:47I've only got one question for you.
- 55:49So what is the, the team Porsche F1 car look like again?
- 55:54Yeah, I don't have an answer for you there.
- 55:56So I don't care what car it's on, especially in Formula One
- 56:01where all the cars look the same.
- 56:02It doesn't really matter.
- 56:04I just think the fact that they're coming back to motorsports and sponsoring a
- 56:07motorsports team is what's really cool.
- 56:09And me, being a Daniel Ricciardo fan, And he's going to be
- 56:12driving for McLaren next year.
- 56:14It's just, I'm, I'm ready to spend thousands of dollars
- 56:17on my golf merchandise.
- 56:18You know, my golf McLaren merchandise, my Daniel Riccardo hat and replica
- 56:22helmet and all this good stuff.
- 56:24I'm ready to go.
- 56:25I can't wait.
- 56:26All right.
- 56:26Well, let's head into our next section, which is.
- 56:42Would you like some fries with that?
- 56:44Because every, every good story seems to start with a Florida man.
- 56:49So I'm going to start with a Florida man.
- 56:53Sets his car on fire, driving with a candle.
- 56:57I really like this story.
- 56:59Now, before I break it down, I wanted to say nobody was hurt, thankfully.
- 57:03Um, I think the only injury was obviously to this man's vehicle, and
- 57:08his pride and ego, and whatever else goes along with that, but Can I ask you
- 57:12a question before you dive into this?
- 57:14It's a Chevy Malibu, so who really cares?
- 57:16It's not much of a loss.
- 57:17No, no, no!
- 57:18I wonder, because he's driving with a candle.
- 57:21And you guys are going to hear about this on a later episode.
- 57:24Was he trying to recreate the ambiance?
- 57:28Of the night scene in Gone in 60 Seconds.
- 57:31I think he was on a date.
- 57:33Well, let's break it down here and let's see what we think
- 57:36when we get to the end of this.
- 57:37Who is this Florida man?
- 57:39I'm gonna leave the nameless nameless, okay?
- 57:42See if I can get this with a streak.
- 57:44So a man was driving with a scented candle in his car at this point.
- 57:50Okay.
- 57:50I'm more interested In why it's a scented candle.
- 57:55What is the scent?
- 57:56What's the flavor?
- 57:57What flavor candle is that?
- 57:58Black ice like you get at track auto.
- 58:02I want to know how bad does this guy's car smell that a pine cone air freshener
- 58:09from the corner gas station wasn't enough Okay, he needed a scented candle.
- 58:14Okay.
- 58:15Candle tips over, ignites some paperwork.
- 58:19Probably divorce papers.
- 58:22Who manufactured this candle that it tipped over, didn't snuff itself
- 58:27out, and then ignited paperwork?
- 58:29Also, where was this candle that you didn't see it fall over?
- 58:34Subsequently, ignite paperwork that you couldn't put the fire out very quickly.
- 58:39It was in the backseat for safety.
- 58:41Also, was there accelerant on this paper?
- 58:43Because, I don't know how it lit this quickly.
- 58:47We read Fahrenheit 451.
- 58:49Now, the man pulls over.
- 58:51grabs a trash can, goes in search of water.
- 58:56At the risk of minor burns, why would you not grab the paperwork, chuck it out the
- 59:02car, or, I don't know, grab the floor mat, start beating the flames to put it out?
- 59:08Like, at what point do you decide that, there's a trash
- 59:12can, now let me go find water?
- 59:14Well, that's what you need the candle for, because you keep
- 59:16putting trash water in your car.
- 59:19So, he presumably returns, I don't know with water or not, in this trash
- 59:24can, but the car is engulfed in flames.
- 59:28He returned with marshmallows.
- 59:31Maybe.
- 59:32Again, I want to know, where was this candle, but more importantly,
- 59:37who made this extraordinary candle?
- 59:41This lit this car on fire, okay, and that's basically the article.
- 59:45But even further, I'm left with, what do you say when you
- 59:50call up the insurance company?
- 59:52I mean, the candle excuse has been used for every meth lab explosion
- 59:56on the east coast that I know of.
- 59:57I mean, from the picture, the candle was in the front, okay?
- 1:00:02It looked like it was in the front passenger seat, so I
- 1:00:04don't, I just Can't even imagine.
- 1:00:06Yeah, only in Florida.
- 1:00:07Statistics have shown that people flatulate up to 14 times a day.
- 1:00:11So maybe this guy spent a lot of time in his car and therefore
- 1:00:14the candle was a necessary evil.
- 1:00:17I don't think he has to say anything to the insurance company.
- 1:00:20I think when they look up his record and see Florida man, I
- 1:00:23think they've got a whole special department for Florida residents.
- 1:00:26A hundred percent.
- 1:00:27Public service announcement listeners, please, you know,
- 1:00:30do not drive with candles.
- 1:00:32I imagine seeing that on the digital board going down 6.
- 1:00:3695 next week.
- 1:00:37So Tanya, tell us about the next Florida man.
- 1:00:40Oh, so he had another Florida man, and this is very annoying, okay?
- 1:00:45Gets 4 million in COVID PPP and buys a Lambo.
- 1:00:50Now, I, this whole time, have misunderstood what the Paycheck
- 1:00:54Protection Program was for, because it's apparently for buying a Lamborghini
- 1:00:58Huracan and not for paying your employees during the time of COVID.
- 1:01:03Like this jackass is gonna say it.
- 1:01:05I mean, it's utterly disgraceful in a time like Now, where people are under
- 1:01:09real crisis, they're without jobs, small business owners are struggling to
- 1:01:13make ends meet to pay their employees.
- 1:01:14You've got this guy defrauding the paycheck protection program for 4 million.
- 1:01:19And he was shooting for way higher than that 4 million to support
- 1:01:23his alleged four businesses.
- 1:01:26And I'm wondering again, if the missing link, what we don't know
- 1:01:31is that one of his businesses.
- 1:01:34was to drive around the Lamborghini Huracan.
- 1:01:36That still only falls under marketing expense, in that the way the Paycheck
- 1:01:41Protection Plan worked is you had to spend at least 75 percent on your
- 1:01:45payroll costs, which included health insurance and taxes and stuff like that.
- 1:01:49And that leaves you with a million bucks if it's 75%, right?
- 1:01:53That's good enough to buy a Lamborghini or Correct, correct, but
- 1:01:56that means he doesn't get to write all, or he can't get that million
- 1:01:59dollars forgiven for that Huracan.
- 1:02:01I mean, apparently it was a 318, 000 Huracan, so I don't know what
- 1:02:06they actually go for, but Slap some vinyls on the side of that thing.
- 1:02:09It's marketing, baby!
- 1:02:10And I will say that it was dirt simple to get approved for the PPP loans.
- 1:02:17I'm an accountant, and I've had to do this for a couple clients.
- 1:02:20And, I mean, they asked for some information, but you
- 1:02:22basically fill it out yourself.
- 1:02:24You go through your bank, and if you've got a good relationship with
- 1:02:27your bank, they don't look, they don't ask questions, they just say,
- 1:02:29oh, you're approved, here you go.
- 1:02:30That's unfortunate.
- 1:02:31I mean, it wasn't just a Lamborghini either, I mean, he was buying lots
- 1:02:35of other high end luxury items.
- 1:02:38With a million bucks to spend, of course, but what I want to know is What
- 1:02:41type of candle did he buy for his name?
- 1:02:44What scent do you think it came in?
- 1:02:46See, that's gonna be the next article.
- 1:02:49Florida man burns Lamborghini to get rid of evidence.
- 1:02:52It smells like donkey.
- 1:02:54Yeah, I was gonna say, does it come in shit bag?
- 1:02:57It smells like jackass.
- 1:02:58I mean, he was caught, he's facing serious criminal charges as you should think.
- 1:03:02Bank fraud, falsifying, you know, statements to a lending
- 1:03:06institution, engaging in transactions with unlawful proceeds.
- 1:03:09It's, it's, it's serious.
- 1:03:11It's a million dollar fine and 30 years in prison.
- 1:03:14So, I mean, hope that was worth it.
- 1:03:15This reminds me of that story a few years ago where another Florida man bought
- 1:03:20that Bugatti Veyron and tried to sink it in the, I guess, in the intercoastal
- 1:03:25because he didn't have the money.
- 1:03:27To cover the loan or whatever.
- 1:03:28So we tried to do insurance fraud.
- 1:03:30Our last Florida man on here actually isn't a Florida man, but a Michigan woman
- 1:03:36who sets her boyfriend's Jeep on fire.
- 1:03:39I'd say ex boyfriend.
- 1:03:40I, yes, at this point, uh, I do believe that would be accurate.
- 1:03:44I also think that this one could be retitled Michigan woman reenacts waiting
- 1:03:51to exhale an apartment parking lot.
- 1:03:53Cause I'm going to go out on a limb here, Angela Bassett fan.
- 1:03:56Has the waiting to exhale DVD extended cut, and not too big on science.
- 1:04:04Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
- 1:04:06The boyfriend was not, or the ex boyfriend, was not in
- 1:04:09the car, was not in the Jeep.
- 1:04:11I mean, the arsonist, no doubt, bumps and bruises and some burns, but nothing
- 1:04:15that was reported as life threatening.
- 1:04:17Did they use a candle?
- 1:04:20There's a comments team here.
- 1:04:24I mean, if you haven't seen the video because somebody in like the, uh,
- 1:04:28another apartment building videoed the whole thing on their phone.
- 1:04:31So it's, it's, it's spectacular.
- 1:04:33It's definitely a what did I just watch moment.
- 1:04:36It's out there.
- 1:04:36Go look at it.
- 1:04:37I mean, she doused the interior of the Jeep.
- 1:04:40With gasoline and then she sticks a stick lighter inside to light it,
- 1:04:47presumably thinking that it's just going to gently light, maybe like the candle.
- 1:04:51That's what the movie show is.
- 1:04:52The movie show is a gasoline lights nice and slow and just takes a trail.
- 1:04:57Yeah, no, except in reality, what happens is all those, the vapors.
- 1:05:01Ignite first and create a blast that sends you Rocketing into the parked
- 1:05:08car that's right next to the jeep.
- 1:05:10That's what happened.
- 1:05:11She slammed into it like WWE.
- 1:05:13I mean it was Incredible I mean she quickly picked up all our things
- 1:05:20and scampered off as the video showed craziness in Michigan Florida
- 1:05:25man, Michigan woman, there you go.
- 1:05:28So speaking of craziness, I think now it's time for us to
- 1:05:31order up a side of Golden Mike.
- 1:05:33Some random car adjacent news.
- 1:05:36So first up, Mountain Man Dan discovers a lime green Geo Metro Ute for sale on eBay.
- 1:05:45I mean, it's eBay, of course.
- 1:05:47Uh, it's probably sitting in his yard now.
- 1:05:50I'm disappointed I did not get time to bid on it, because we
- 1:05:54would have bought it for Matt.
- 1:05:55So Matt, if you're listening, that would have your name all over it.
- 1:05:58It's the ultimate sport utility vehicle there.
- 1:06:02Meanwhile, speaking of crazy time, how about that 88 BMW M3 that sold on Bring
- 1:06:10a Trailer for a quarter million dollars?
- 1:06:13Is the BAT, does that actually stand for BAT shit crazy?
- 1:06:17It stands for bring a trash bag full of money.
- 1:06:23Yeah, yeah, 100 percent and get yourself a Paynos.
- 1:06:26But, in reality, I don't understand those kind of purchases.
- 1:06:30I know some people are going for Guinness Book of Records for most expensive
- 1:06:34car sold or something like that.
- 1:06:35But to me, I mean, the E30 M3 is a fantastic car.
- 1:06:40It was Trend setting and the whole nine yards, it was really a step out for BMW.
- 1:06:46And they're, they're very sought after, but I just think there's
- 1:06:49an extra bunch of zeros on there.
- 1:06:51Like I could see a pristine low mileage E30 going for 25 grand, but I can't see it
- 1:06:58for going for a quarter million dollars.
- 1:06:59I mean, who has that kind of basically F you money to throw
- 1:07:04around on a 30 year old BMW.
- 1:07:06I mean, it's just, it's not that special at the end of the day.
- 1:07:10A, they also just bought their child a 70, 000 Bugatti baby too.
- 1:07:15Oh, okay.
- 1:07:16You stole my thunder.
- 1:07:18You know, I wonder which PPP loan he got to buy that E30.
- 1:07:23I mean, I don't know, the E30 M3 checks a lot of boxes for me.
- 1:07:27But not at 250, 000.
- 1:07:29I'm back in that 9 11 camp for an extra 3, 000 if I'm spending that kind of money.
- 1:07:33It checks the no box for me at 250, 000.
- 1:07:39100%.
- 1:07:41That's a no for me, Alex.
- 1:07:43So, in other random news Some of our listeners may know
- 1:07:48the Xbox One is sunsetting.
- 1:07:50The new version is about to come out, the Xbox.
- 1:07:52The Xbox Series X.
- 1:07:54There we go.
- 1:07:55The Xbox Series X comes out for this holiday season.
- 1:07:58Now, all of us aren't going to rush out and probably buy it day
- 1:08:00one, although some of us listening probably will, but there is a title
- 1:08:05that is, I think, worth pre ordering.
- 1:08:07Some art people would argue not, that's going to come out on the PS4 and the
- 1:08:11Xbox One, and that's Project Cars 3.
- 1:08:14The best part of the article that I read about it was actually
- 1:08:17what engaged me the most.
- 1:08:18And it says at last a driving SIM that's properly playable with a game pad.
- 1:08:24And for those of you that don't have full racing rigs at home, you'll know
- 1:08:28that the previous project cars were near impossible without major tuning
- 1:08:32to play without a simulator rig.
- 1:08:35But it is a fantastic game.
- 1:08:36It has a lot of more realistic features than some of the
- 1:08:39other games that are out there.
- 1:08:40It's a little bit more entry level.
- 1:08:42There's a lot of articles describing pros and cons of all these games, like a set
- 1:08:45of course, uh, and I racing, et cetera, and barriers to entry in terms of costs
- 1:08:49and project cars is really sits in the middle between a Forza and a grand Turismo
- 1:08:53and all these other games that are there.
- 1:08:55The new version, thankfully is a partnership.
- 1:08:59Mostly because Codemasters bought Mad Game Racing, and therefore it is now under the
- 1:09:05same publisher as games like Grid and Dirt and all the Formula 1 series games, etc.
- 1:09:12And with the influence from Codemasters, It means that project cars three is
- 1:09:16going to have a lot of the features and functionality that we're used to seeing
- 1:09:19in, you know, a dirt or a grid, et cetera.
- 1:09:22And it's going to be a lot more playable.
- 1:09:23It's got a lot more fun.
- 1:09:24I've seen some of the early videos of project cars three.
- 1:09:27It looks amazing.
- 1:09:28And I have to say, despite the fact that it's coming on a, on a chassis, that's.
- 1:09:33Basically out the door.
- 1:09:34I still pre ordered a copy because I'm going to play it.
- 1:09:37With that being said, we may or may not pursue the idea like we've
- 1:09:41said in the past of doing a virtual racing league with a game that isn't.
- 1:09:47Forza, with that being said, Forza 8 will debut on the new Series X platform, which
- 1:09:52again, we may or may not run out and buy.
- 1:09:55So this might be an opportunity for us to use Project Cars 3 to bridge
- 1:09:58the gap as we decide where we're going in 21 with our virtual racing league.
- 1:10:03I mean I'm looking forward to more information on the game.
- 1:10:05I've been trying to, I go to the Project Cars 3 website pretty routinely to see
- 1:10:10if they've updated anything because right now they're still sticking pretty
- 1:10:13generic to over 140 cars or track configurations or whatever the stats are.
- 1:10:20They're not, I'm waiting, I want to see like a track list, what's new,
- 1:10:23what's different from the old ones.
- 1:10:25There are snippets of articles that talk about a couple new tracks.
- 1:10:28But then also some tracks that I guess they don't have the licensing
- 1:10:31rights for anymore and might be disappearing like spa apparently.
- 1:10:35So, I mean, we'll see what, what's actually true.
- 1:10:37I'm waiting to actually have Codemasters and Mad Game, you know, officially
- 1:10:42reveal that on their website.
- 1:10:44And we're, we're a month away.
- 1:10:46Cause it's supposed to release in August 28th.
- 1:10:48So hopefully they update their, their information pretty soon.
- 1:10:52But I mean, I'm excited for it.
- 1:10:53I, Project Cars 2 was definitely very different than Forza.
- 1:10:58You did have to configure that controller very heavily to make it drivable.
- 1:11:03It's different in a good way, and it was enjoyable, so hopefully Project
- 1:11:06Cars 3 is, you know, they keep a lot of their physics engine intact, even though
- 1:11:10they're making it more user friendly.
- 1:11:13I think it's going to be a lot of fun with the tweaks from Codemasters
- 1:11:17to make the game more playable, make the UI better, probably make
- 1:11:20the multiplayer experience better.
- 1:11:22I think it's going to be an all around win.
- 1:11:24And with it coming out in August, That means we still have four to
- 1:11:28five months before the new Xbox comes out, if it releases on time.
- 1:11:33So, in anxious anticipation of the Series X coming, I need
- 1:11:38something to do in the meantime.
- 1:11:39So I think Project Cars 3 will be a great excuse for something to
- 1:11:42do when the track season closes.
- 1:11:44And God forbid, if there's another COVID shutdown and we're all kind of stuck
- 1:11:48at home again, I think it'll be a nice distraction to have a new game to play.
- 1:11:52With my friends and with the virtual racing league people,
- 1:11:55and we'll see where things go.
- 1:11:56Kind of switching gears a little bit to kind of talk about filling time.
- 1:12:00Tanya brought to my attention the other day.
- 1:12:01There are a ton of rally documentaries on, of all places on Amazon prime.
- 1:12:07I happened to watch one the other day that was kind of short, sweet,
- 1:12:10and to the point about group B.
- 1:12:12I'm a big WRC fan, probably one of the few people in the club that is.
- 1:12:15I've mentioned that before, but especially group B, it's kind of the
- 1:12:18sweet spot because I grew up as a kid actually watching those races,
- 1:12:22you know, on television, you know, or live on what was, you know, cable.
- 1:12:26This particular Documentary is called rally the killer years.
- 1:12:30It's 53 minutes.
- 1:12:31So it's very easy to just kind of blaze through and it gives you
- 1:12:35a great overview of group B and why it ended so abruptly in 1986.
- 1:12:40I actually discovered some information that I wasn't clear on.
- 1:12:45And there's three big Kind of catalyst that caused group B to end
- 1:12:50and kind of a little spoiler here
- 1:12:57Two of them involve Aloncia and one of them involve a Ford a death at the
- 1:13:02hand of an 037 and a Delta s4 two of the drivers went off track, one of
- 1:13:07them at Corsica and the other one was at another location and they died.
- 1:13:11And that was part of the impetus.
- 1:13:13Most of us feel that it was, Oh, somebody got killed in a crowd or whatever.
- 1:13:17That was part of it.
- 1:13:18And that's really the Ford story.
- 1:13:20And that's a really.
- 1:13:21A tragic story about driver hubris.
- 1:13:24And so there's kind of an underlying message there because it was a complete
- 1:13:27send it moment and the driver that Ford hired to drive the RS 200 at
- 1:13:32that race in Portugal, unfortunately, he had never driven the car before.
- 1:13:37He was very ambitious is the word I'm going to use.
- 1:13:40And he literally said before going out at that stage, he goes, I'm just going
- 1:13:45to learn how to drive the car while I'm out there and what had happened.
- 1:13:51as they show the footage and it's pretty gruesome.
- 1:13:53So if you watch it, you know, make sure you explain to your kids
- 1:13:57or anybody else that's watching what's, what's about to happen.
- 1:14:00But basically somebody from the crowd wanted to reach out and touch the car.
- 1:14:05Cause that was the thing back then.
- 1:14:07And the driver freaked out and because he was unfamiliar with mid engine rally car
- 1:14:12and the rs200 was notoriously twitchy He over corrected and basically spun into
- 1:14:18a crowd of people and hurt maimed killed many many people and He actually walked
- 1:14:25Out of the car after it all went down, he actually sat in the car for a period
- 1:14:28of time, kind of with his head on the steering wheel, probably contemplating
- 1:14:32the rest of his life at that point.
- 1:14:34But, you know, he walked away from the crash, whereas many other people didn't.
- 1:14:38And that was one of the most horrific crashes in group B.
- 1:14:41And it was kind of the nail in the coffin with respect to that
- 1:14:44most extreme of motorsports.
- 1:14:46And that's why rally is now finally very regulated, et cetera.
- 1:14:50And in the short time that the film.
- 1:14:53Runs.
- 1:14:53It covers all of this.
- 1:14:54There's great interviews with people like Michel Mouton,
- 1:14:57Walter rural, and Ari Vatanen.
- 1:15:00And it's very insightful, you know, firsthand accounts of what
- 1:15:03happened back then and all that.
- 1:15:04And it's very cool.
- 1:15:05And I highly recommend watching it.
- 1:15:07If you want to get a really good high level overview of what group B
- 1:15:10rally was like back in the eighties.
- 1:15:12Moving away from that and and unfortunately kind of, you know,
- 1:15:15more somber note, we wanted to also kind of tip our hats.
- 1:15:18Regis Philbin passed away this week on the 25th of July.
- 1:15:22So Regis passed away at 88 years old.
- 1:15:24So I tried to see if there was any car adjacent to him and I
- 1:15:27didn't really find anything.
- 1:15:28I don't know that he was.
- 1:15:30Probably particularly the car guy.
- 1:15:32But, however, I did find that there was a show in the early 2000s, Faith and
- 1:15:37Hope, which starred Faith Ford and Kelly Ripa, who Kelly Ripa was his, one of his
- 1:15:43co hosts after Kathy Lee Gifford, and he was, I think, on two episodes of that
- 1:15:48show, and he played a used car salesman.
- 1:15:52Boom!
- 1:15:52There it is!
- 1:15:53Car connection.
- 1:15:54He was Handsome Hal.
- 1:15:56Oh man.
- 1:15:57This is like six degrees at Kevin Bacon.
- 1:16:00That's why it's car adjacent.
- 1:16:01Car adjacent.
- 1:16:02And we have one more piece of random news before we close out.
- 1:16:05It's a future Florida Man story.
- 1:16:08Yes, this is.
- 1:16:09Folks, we are going back to Florida on this one.
- 1:16:12I could not pass up this article when I saw the headline.
- 1:16:16It's new drive thru Halloween experience coming to Orlando this fall.
- 1:16:22And I'm just going to go and quote directly the Orlando Weekly.
- 1:16:26At a time when most Halloween events are canceling on 2020 completely.
- 1:16:30A group of Central Florida creatives is hosting a drive thru experience
- 1:16:34to scare the crap out of you in the safety of your own car.
- 1:16:38The quote, haunted road builds itself as Orlando's first
- 1:16:42immersive, completely contactless drive thru Halloween experience.
- 1:16:46They plan to tell an original theatrical story through twisted
- 1:16:50creatures and quote, unexpected scares in every drive thru scene.
- 1:16:55I love this, and I am extremely worried.
- 1:16:59about the execution of this.
- 1:17:02If there's one thing that I loved or that I love, it's being scared while
- 1:17:08behind the wheels of an automobile.
- 1:17:10I just love that.
- 1:17:11It's just amazing.
- 1:17:12I can't wait for the Florida Man stories to come out of this.
- 1:17:16I mean, how many, what's the over under on how many people are going
- 1:17:19to get killed in crowd control?
- 1:17:20Well, it's going to look like that Group B rally documentary that I watched.
- 1:17:24And then some genius, because you're probably going to do this with your
- 1:17:28headlights off, is going to have a candle in their car because they can't
- 1:17:31see where the hell they're going.
- 1:17:33So it's a win across the board.
- 1:17:36Stay tuned, folks, for more, more on this story.
- 1:17:39I can't even imagine.
- 1:17:40All I know is that when I, I like haunted houses and haunted
- 1:17:43forests and all those things.
- 1:17:44Sign me up.
- 1:17:44I won't watch a scary movie, but I will go walk through a haunted forest.
- 1:17:48It makes complete sense.
- 1:17:50But I will say that I instinctually take off running at the sound of chainsaws.
- 1:17:55So I do not know what would happen if I'm in my car and I
- 1:17:59hear a bunch of chainsaws going.
- 1:18:01Oh, I know what would happen.
- 1:18:02It would look like, you ever see those Florida flea markets?
- 1:18:05Where the guy, like, drives right in there.
- 1:18:10I mean, I'm sorry.
- 1:18:12It's not funny, but it is.
- 1:18:15I mean, I, I sincerely hope that it goes off safely and it's a great production.
- 1:18:20It could be a lot of fun.
- 1:18:21I'm waiting for the YouTube videos on this one.
- 1:18:23I am ecstatic.
- 1:18:24Well, I, I don't think this is something that I can go to.
- 1:18:28Being somebody that has been thrown out of a Six Flags at
- 1:18:31one of these Halloween events.
- 1:18:33I probably will not be going to this.
- 1:18:36Woo!
- 1:18:36That is just, wow, so much Florida.
- 1:18:38So much Florida action there.
- 1:18:40Call this fast food.
- 1:18:41Uh, hi?
- 1:18:43Fifteen Big Macs, please.
- 1:18:45Excuse me?
- 1:18:46Fifteen Big Macs, please.
- 1:18:49How much Big Macs?
- 1:18:50Fifteen.
- 1:18:51Trios or just the Big Macs?
- 1:18:53Just the Big Macs.
- 1:18:54Fifteen Big Macs?
- 1:18:55Yeah, it's 76 and 73 cents.
- 1:18:59Okay, can I get a liter of Big Mac sauce on the side?
- 1:19:01No problem.
- 1:19:02Thank you.
- 1:19:03Alright, our final segment, we call it the secret sauce.
- 1:19:07We cover specific, uh, GTM news.
- 1:19:11So we know you're listening to a podcast right now, but we want to give you
- 1:19:14a little sneak peek of some upcoming episodes in the next month that are
- 1:19:17scheduled for August next week, or right after this episode, you'll be listening
- 1:19:22to a member story from Portia Al.
- 1:19:26After that, we're going to have a special, what should I buy episode
- 1:19:29entitled regrets and the desert Island.
- 1:19:32We have a two parter called story time with crutch.
- 1:19:35And then wrapping up August, we're going to have the Latin lads racing team on and
- 1:19:40to talk about the case of the cursed mini.
- 1:19:43So those are the episodes you get to look forward to here in the month of August.
- 1:19:47Just so you guys know, depending on how you're listening to the podcast now, Break
- 1:19:50Fix is now available on all the majors.
- 1:19:53That means Apple, Google, and Spotify.
- 1:19:55There's people using all different ways to connect to us.
- 1:19:58But, uh, you have the option to use any of those three major services.
- 1:20:02If you would like to listen to us on another service, like maybe a Pandora
- 1:20:06or Prime, we do have those options.
- 1:20:08Just let us know if that's something of interest.
- 1:20:09But we think we have everybody covered with those three.
- 1:20:12Summer Bash 6 is going to be held the weekend of August the 25th.
- 1:20:18First at pit race this year, this is the first year where we're
- 1:20:21not holding it at summit point.
- 1:20:23It was a long and kind of drawn out board meeting with respect to where we
- 1:20:27were going to do the event, why, and et cetera, it just seemed to make more
- 1:20:30sense with the logistics that you heard earlier about HOD changing the plans for
- 1:20:34summit point, that we would do it at pit race, the pit race facility is great.
- 1:20:38If you haven't been there, it's probably one of the best laps on the
- 1:20:41East coast these days, especially for a track that was built, you know, in the
- 1:20:45last, let's say decade or two decades.
- 1:20:47A lot of fun, really long track and a full configuration.
- 1:20:51Lots of elevation changes.
- 1:20:53It doesn't particularly lend itself to slow cars or fast cars.
- 1:20:56It's a great mix of technical and speed, but at the same time, it has a go kart
- 1:21:00track and it has a lot of other amenities.
- 1:21:02And so being summer bash, what it is.
- 1:21:05And if you participated in the.
- 1:21:07Paddock party at pit race last year.
- 1:21:09We're basically combining those two events thanks to COVID and we're
- 1:21:12going to make the best of an excellent weekend and out in Pittsburgh.

- 1:23:44Uh, we're going to say thank you to, uh, Kerwin, who's a
- 1:23:46longtime listener, no time caller.
- 1:23:48Hopefully we'll get him on eventually at some point.
- 1:23:51Judd, thank you for being on the, the contest that we had.

- 1:24:39He's been in the hospital.
- 1:24:40He's got a GoFundMe page set up.
- 1:24:43We'll try and put a link in with the Patreon.
- 1:24:45I think we can get access to that.
- 1:24:46But please go help them out.
- 1:24:48They're great people.
- 1:24:49He's a great kid.
- 1:24:50We hate to see him down like this.
- 1:24:52Special thanks to Gunther Hoyt.
- 1:24:54He is the president of the Old Dominion Packer Club and he's part
- 1:24:57of the Classic Car Club of America.

- 1:25:03how to get, you know, younger people involved in that and that episode
- 1:25:06will be coming out later this year.
- 1:25:08It's really fun, especially if you're into older older cars.

- 1:25:47Every little bit helps and you know, we we're fueled by volunteers.
- 1:25:50So it's So it all adds up.
- 1:25:53In addition to that, I want to thank Garrett from Chazz's Used Auto Parts
- 1:25:56for always being a top notch sponsor of GTM, but in addition to that for
- 1:26:00coming on and doing a recording with us for a future podcast episode where
- 1:26:04he tells us all about dirt track racing and motorsport that probably many of us
- 1:26:09are not familiar with, but it actually is very interesting and has a lot of
- 1:26:13parallels with some of the things we do.
- 1:26:14So thank you Garrett for doing that and for extending all the courtesies
- 1:26:18you do when we come out to the shop.
- 1:26:20And for just being an all around great guy and thanks to your dad as
- 1:26:23well and everybody over at Chaz's and we look forward to continuing doing
- 1:26:27business with you in the future.
- 1:26:29And we would be remiss if we didn't thank our wives.
- 1:26:31Thank you, Jessica, for allowing me to have Eric, you know, for all
- 1:26:35this time that we spent on this.
- 1:26:36And thank you, Adrian, for putting up with all my craziness.
- 1:26:39I know you're not a car person, but you you put up with me being a car person.
- 1:26:43And, you know, we greatly appreciate it.
- 1:26:45That is the key to success right there.
- 1:26:47We've said it once.
- 1:26:48We've said it a hundred times.
- 1:26:49This goes to all of our members.
- 1:26:51This goes to all of our listeners.
- 1:26:53This goes to everybody that supports GTM, whether you're following us on
- 1:26:57Instagram, on Twitter, on LinkedIn, through our articles, you know,
- 1:27:00everything that we do and all the way we try to touch and influence
- 1:27:03people's lives and bring motorsports enthusiasm to the world without you guys.
- 1:27:10None of this would be possible.
- 1:27:11So a big round of applause to everyone that's out there that's,
- 1:27:15that's helped and contributed, that we didn't mention on this list.
- 1:27:18Again, thank you so much.
- 1:27:20Yeah, without you guys, it would basically be me and Eric sitting
- 1:27:23in his basement, talking about cars that we wish we could afford.
- 1:27:27And on that note, I think it's time to end.
- 1:27:30And have a great rest of the month.
- 1:27:33Goodbye.
- 1:27:39Here we are,
- 1:27:43us cars in back of us, all just waiting to order.
- 1:27:47There's some idiot in a Volvo with his bright son behind me.
- 1:27:51I lean out the window and scream, hey, whatcha trying to do, blind me?
- 1:27:56My wife says maybe we should part.
