- 0:57Speaker 1: The Graham Marshall.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I'm a broad directory director, Grandma she was the Grandmashal
- 1:03Speaker 2: this year.
- 1:04Speaker 1: He's an idiot.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Mario is the Barter Directors. First of all, we're at
- 1:08Speaker 4: live at Look at these people out here. Hi, we
- 1:12Speaker 4: got some people outside do you hear us? Do you
- 1:15Speaker 4: hear us out there? I don't think they hear us anyway.
- 1:19Speaker 4: We're on Mulberry and Brand at Red Sauce Studios.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Thank you studio, Bye.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Sabino and John Viola. We have wonderful mario here. You're
- 1:32Speaker 4: gonna explain to us who you were affiliated with the feast,
- 1:36Speaker 4: give us a rundown on the feast, a little history
- 1:39Speaker 4: on the feast, and what your input is with this feast.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Sure, no, proud gody, as you know, this young lady
- 1:46Speaker 2: was our grand Marshal last year on ninety seventh annual parade,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and this year is our ninety eight. I'm my great
- 1:54Speaker 2: grandfather was the one of the founding fathers. In nineteen
- 1:58Speaker 2: twenty six. Wow, they decided to have a block party.
- 2:01Speaker 2: They came from Naples and a couple of business owners
- 2:04Speaker 2: decided to have.
- 2:05Speaker 1: A block party.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and they picked a patron state of Naples was
- 2:09Speaker 2: the son Gronao, who was a bishop who got beheaded
- 2:12Speaker 2: in the.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Three hundred and fifty eight d I guess it was.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And they tried to kill him twice, they couldn't kill him,
- 2:19Speaker 2: and then they finally beheaded out. Yeah, it's like a,
- 2:22Speaker 2: I couldn't kill him. And that's the way the Italians
- 2:24Speaker 2: were good. We's lest forever. And I grew up in
- 2:26Speaker 2: this neighborhood. And like I said, my great grandfather started
- 2:30Speaker 2: to fea salvatorresp bosiito with his business friend and now
- 2:34Speaker 2: then relative, Luigi Vitally, and they started this feast.
- 2:37Speaker 1: They started a block party.
- 2:39Speaker 2: They lit up the fire escapes with lights like Christmas lights,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and they would bring out food from their houses and
- 2:45Speaker 2: everybody would share it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And they said, wow, this is a great idea.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And ninety eight years later we only missed two years
- 2:53Speaker 2: obviously nine to eleven and COVID twenty twenty.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And I grew up right down the block here.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I during the feast, they have the princesses and the
- 3:03Speaker 2: queens on the floor. As a seven or eight year old,
- 3:05Speaker 2: I would dress up like g I Joe and protect
- 3:08Speaker 2: the princesses and I have princes Evan.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I'll send it to you guys later on see that.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And then later on, as I got older, I carried
- 3:14Speaker 2: the flags, the Italian flag, the banner.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Studying go very much into tradition. Tradition is my old
- 3:21Speaker 1: school culture, family tradition. That's impotant.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Do you think that as holding the tradition of the culture,
- 3:28Speaker 4: the feast, the whole nine yards.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Just tradition, tradition. The members now we are all volunteer members.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Most of them have relatives, cousins, best friends from kindergarten up.
- 3:38Speaker 2: We're nineteen of us that put this feast together, all volunteers,
- 3:43Speaker 2: all total. Note nobody gets paid, nobody gets We work hard.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It takes us twelve months. We'll finish this feast on
- 3:48Speaker 2: Sunday and by October we'll start preparing for the next show. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and we are also putting together a committee for the
- 3:56Speaker 2: one hundred anniversary where we're going to try to really
- 3:58Speaker 2: blow it up and have it a.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Coming back without that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: We're trying to what our plan is and don't tell nobody,
- 4:04Speaker 2: but our brand is to get all our grand Marshall's back,
- 4:08Speaker 2: such as Kathy, Steve.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Shirrippa, I'm on ASANTI and on and on and Honorary
- 4:13Speaker 1: Graham Marshall. Just because we'll bring it up at the meeting. Well, Sue,
- 4:15Speaker 1: where could do?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Ad Burrell was our Grand Marshall this year. She was fabulous.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Like I said, I grew up in this neighborhood. I
- 4:21Speaker 2: married a neighborhood girl, my wife Joyce, forty two years.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I have three children who my oldest son is Christopher
- 4:27Speaker 2: and his wife and so SHEI have two grandchildren out
- 4:30Speaker 2: there of Vallamere and Christopher.
- 4:32Speaker 1: They live in Texas.
- 4:33Speaker 2: My middle daughter is married now with her husband Will
- 4:36Speaker 2: and she's has a thirteenth fifteen month old and she's
- 4:39Speaker 2: pregnant again. And then my baby's thirty and he had
- 4:44Speaker 2: a baby and he's married to Jordan.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And my grandson are j I love him. I love
- 4:47Speaker 1: them all in their family.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Hopefully I could get my sons to come back and
- 4:51Speaker 2: be members at some point and my grandsons. You know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: but family is everything, and this is my family, my tradition.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I remember growing up watching the stands go up at
- 5:01Speaker 2: the beginning of September school starting, and then such a
- 5:05Speaker 2: great failure.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I had the montcarmofet.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So when you saw them start to put.
- 5:10Speaker 4: The lights up, as a kid, you lose your mind.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You lose your mind.
- 5:14Speaker 2: But then the sad part is that Sunday night when
- 5:16Speaker 2: they're breaking on the stands.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You know that school is in. We're done. Next thing
- 5:21Speaker 1: we could look forward to his Thanksgiving. Probably I'll tell you.
- 5:25Speaker 4: What I missed that you'll remember. You might remember in
- 5:28Speaker 4: Montcalmofe said, I know they sold them here, the dolls
- 5:32Speaker 4: on the stick that the Italians would put on the bed.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yes, and you know who, my cousin, Frankie Capello's brother, Johnny,
- 5:40Speaker 2: he would make those.
- 5:41Speaker 1: He would sell them in the feast. He would have
- 5:43Speaker 1: two or three stands in the feast, and he would
- 5:45Speaker 1: sell those. And and you put them on your bed.
- 5:47Speaker 1: My daughter, my wife had one for her wedding. He
- 5:50Speaker 1: made one for her wedding. We had it on the bed.
- 5:52Speaker 1: We took pictures in her mom's bedroom. Johnny.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you remember John I passed many years ago.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So he had a novelty business. Yeah, no, right, yeah,
- 6:04Speaker 2: it's it's a beautiful against some traditions. I mean this
- 6:06Speaker 2: stand here, Vinie Peanuts, which they renamed the corner after
- 6:10Speaker 2: this cousin of mine.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He's married into the family and they've been here for
- 6:14Speaker 1: just as long as the feast I can remember.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I mean the torone and the nuts and uh, you
- 6:19Speaker 2: know the staples in the name. But obviously baby John's
- 6:21Speaker 2: got the cafe. He's uh, he's been here forever.
- 6:24Speaker 1: He'll be here forever.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I mean my first dollar in the feast with him
- 6:27Speaker 2: stuff and Gonoli's coming from La Salle Academy, my high
- 6:29Speaker 2: school and running here.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I went to La Salle Academy and we used to
- 6:33Speaker 1: walk there.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I mean I lived here once twenty six Mobiley Street
- 6:37Speaker 2: until until I get married. I got married a young
- 6:39Speaker 2: age twenty one, and I had my own vending business
- 6:43Speaker 2: for thirty years with the Bureau of Prisons. I did vending,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and now I work in the school and stand out
- 6:47Speaker 2: at PS eight.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I'm a para.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I coach baseball. Uh, but my life keeps coming back
- 6:53Speaker 2: here as a volunteer. You know, we need mobis.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I mean this.
- 6:57Speaker 2: My mother had dinner with the President of the United States,
- 7:00Speaker 2: Ronald Reagan, and into this restaurant.
- 7:01Speaker 1: She was part of an organization called Leris. She was
- 7:04Speaker 1: part of an organization called LERA, the literally.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Restoration Association, and they kept the neighborhood strong so that
- 7:11Speaker 2: we can have these feasts. The geographics of little Litley
- 7:15Speaker 2: when we had Little Lira was canal to house.
- 7:18Speaker 1: In the Bari to Broadway. Huge. Huge. Now it's it's
- 7:23Speaker 1: canal straight up mover with the broom.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Probably you have no leader, no hout, a bunch of
- 7:28Speaker 2: different groupings within that.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Besides demographically shrinking, how old has this feast changed?
- 7:35Speaker 1: Well, the feasts has changed for me. I mean every
- 7:38Speaker 1: stand I knew everybody.
- 7:39Speaker 2: My aunt had a butcher especialis, but she would come
- 7:42Speaker 2: out and cook a plant, parmajan meat, all this stuff
- 7:45Speaker 2: straight out the frattas used to have sausage and peppers
- 7:49Speaker 2: outs there.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You had everybody that you knew. It was either a
- 7:52Speaker 1: restaurant or person that lived in the neighborhood.
- 7:54Speaker 4: That was cook home, cook home.
- 7:56Speaker 1: In the back of the butcher.
- 7:57Speaker 2: They were cooking the equipment and it was top notch.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And now it's these are vendors the people that would
- 8:04Speaker 2: have except the loc sauceage. She's probably the only one
- 8:07Speaker 2: left of the realm that we had back in the
- 8:10Speaker 2: But you know, you can walk up and down the
- 8:11Speaker 2: block and they're all great people, you know, ethically, all.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Different ethic groups. And yeah, we love that absolutely.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But the difference, like you asked, was the difference is
- 8:21Speaker 2: that there were people that literally had storefronts and they'd
- 8:24Speaker 2: come out with their food and the city.
- 8:25Speaker 3: That's how it started. Period I love that. You know,
- 8:30Speaker 3: it's it's Do you feel that since it's Trump, do
- 8:34Speaker 3: you feel that it's less Italians and there because there
- 8:37Speaker 3: are less of times in the neighborhood.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Well, there's probably there's every less as times the day.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But my mom died in twenty twenty. She still lived
- 8:43Speaker 2: at one twenty six more bars sheet and there.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Are very few left here. I mean there's a handful.
- 8:49Speaker 2: But we used to the doors were open, everybody running
- 8:52Speaker 2: up and down the building on Sunday. You smell the
- 8:53Speaker 2: sauce on everybody, so you know, it was you know, everybody.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I mean, now it's a lot of uh, you know, street.
- 9:00Speaker 1: People coming here. They can't afford to live here.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Well you can't afford to live but literally no more
- 9:03Speaker 2: because of the price of the rent and everything. But yeah,
- 9:06Speaker 2: that's changed. But you know what, it's sill a beautiful neighborhood.
- 9:09Speaker 2: People come from.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Around the world to eat here, to come in this festival.
- 9:14Speaker 1: We have people.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I met people from Australia, I met people from China,
- 9:18Speaker 2: I met people from all over the world that come
- 9:20Speaker 2: here specifically for this feast. And that's an amazing thing
- 9:24Speaker 2: and that makes me feel so good.
- 9:25Speaker 4: I gotta tell you you should feel good because I'm
- 9:27Speaker 4: gonna tell you my best New York moment, my number
- 9:31Speaker 4: one iconic New York, most joyful New York moment with
- 9:37Speaker 4: my family on that float, I was the Grand Marshall.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Mario and the committee asked me to be the Grand Marshal.
- 9:44Speaker 4: I was so honored. You get on this float and
- 9:48Speaker 4: you get on with they give you up to twenty
- 9:50Speaker 4: six people, right, twenty something people. You go from what
- 9:57Speaker 4: to what, you go up Houston. It's magical. You're looking
- 10:02Speaker 4: down at the crowds, is so happy to be here,
- 10:04Speaker 4: people from all over the world, with people from all
- 10:08Speaker 4: over the world. I felt so proud to be Italian.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I felt so proud I'm coming to this feast since
- 10:14Speaker 4: I'm a baby. My mother, my grandparents came and I
- 10:21Speaker 4: got to tell you, I want to be on that
- 10:22Speaker 4: float every year because it's such a happy, beautiful New
- 10:27Speaker 4: York iconic moment and and and I hope next year
- 10:30Speaker 4: we can get Sebastian manaskawco.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'm glad. I'm glad you really enjoyed it.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I want to thank you.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah, no problem, you know, Sebastian.
- 10:37Speaker 2: This year, Ambera was magnificent, but I was searching and
- 10:40Speaker 2: I'm searching for that year.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Sebastian would be a great way. We're going to get
- 10:43Speaker 1: them all.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You know he was he was born in the health's kitchen.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Let's see if you watch the podcast sly we watched
- 10:58Speaker 2: it about that's about. Yeah, we got we got connections
- 11:01Speaker 2: with Yeah, we gotta marry.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I just want to say to you looking, I wish
- 11:07Speaker 3: everybody could see what I'm staring at.
- 11:09Speaker 4: You and they could turn it around.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Can we say I would just I just want you
- 11:13Speaker 3: to you should be proud of this that all people
- 11:16Speaker 3: are here because of you and they and not direct.
- 11:19Speaker 1: But my crew everybody. Yeah, we work hard. I mean
- 11:23Speaker 1: some people do more than I still work.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Like I said, I'm a teacher's assistant in PS eight
- 11:27Speaker 2: second career and a couple of the members are retired,
- 11:30Speaker 2: so they do put in a lot more.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Time than I do.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But at every meeting and whenever I can, when I'm
- 11:35Speaker 2: from the summer, we come, we measure the spots, we
- 11:37Speaker 2: do our spray painting.
- 11:38Speaker 1: We meet with the applicants of the people coming in.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You make it happen. We may get the center.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Stage's going to be there, Ricky Tanelly here on Saturday night.
