- 0:17Speaker 1: now your hosts Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Christmas time is here, but there's still time to kill
- 0:27Speaker 2: it the year. This is Retfresh. Let's go. Welcome to
- 0:48Speaker 2: Refresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith. This is Tyler Jones.
- 0:52Speaker 2: We're brought to you by first Slight Gear and Merry Christmas.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Jimmy Christmas. That's right to commemorate
- 1:01Speaker 2: one of the ogs of outdoor television, shooting Big Bucks
- 1:04Speaker 2: on film. Man, you're raggling, Yeah, Roger ragling outdoors. He
- 1:09Speaker 2: was doing it way back. You know, it's easy to
- 1:11Speaker 2: be critical of some of the things that happened in
- 1:13Speaker 2: early outdoor TV, but you got to realize that those
- 1:15Speaker 2: guys are pioneers doing something no one had ever done.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Before, creating a dust ball.
- 1:19Speaker 2: It's western expansive, way faster than I am right now,
- 1:28Speaker 2: but I'm kind of moving the speed of the deer
- 1:30Speaker 2: right now, just moving kind of slow, you know what
- 1:31Speaker 2: I mean. I think people across the country are either
- 1:36Speaker 2: real hype because deer seasons just getting going, or real
- 1:39Speaker 2: sad because it's over.
- 1:41Speaker 3: It depends on where you're at.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's weird, how like, you know, everybody up north kind
- 1:46Speaker 2: of gets all hype about this early season white Tail
- 1:49Speaker 2: and then you know.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Remember you're talking to Mark's fan base. Listen, I can
- 1:55Speaker 3: speak that language. My mom's from Minnesota.
- 1:58Speaker 2: But you know, around December tenth, that's all like, oh,
- 2:00Speaker 2: it's over, you know whereas Like, dude, I mean, even
- 2:04Speaker 2: in our backyards here in Texas, December we're in pretty
- 2:08Speaker 2: far in North Texas, December tenth is still a good date,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know. And well we're looking at December today is
- 2:15Speaker 2: this will come out Christmas Day, Okay? And you can actually,
- 2:20Speaker 2: even in North Texas have good hunts at this point
- 2:23Speaker 2: in the year if you've got good food or you
- 2:24Speaker 2: know where betting is. And we're gonna talk to some
- 2:26Speaker 2: different people around the country, a lot of more southern
- 2:30Speaker 2: latitudes this week, but I thought it might be a
- 2:33Speaker 2: good time because this is the last episode of Retfresh
- 2:36Speaker 2: for the year, guys, to kind of reflect on some
- 2:39Speaker 2: of the good interviews that we've had this year. I
- 2:42Speaker 2: do believe we had our first perfect ten this year. Really, yes,
- 2:47Speaker 2: we did. Someone I can't, I can't was it Alex
- 2:50Speaker 2: Comstock that called up perfectly? Was like Parker or something.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Might have been Parker. I don't know. Parker killed a
- 2:54Speaker 3: big o' deer.
- 2:56Speaker 2: There is a trend on Retfresh, okay, And I think
- 3:01Speaker 2: that this is a good trend that a lot of
- 3:05Speaker 2: people do a Refresh interview and then kill deer the
- 3:08Speaker 2: next day.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Oh for sure.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Michael Huncker did it. Mike Hunsucker, Alex Comstock did it,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Parker did it?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Who else? Someone? Charry Larson does it every year Cheryl Larson. Yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 3: that's right.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, So if you want to kill a deer, just
- 3:22Speaker 2: try to get on a re Fresh interview.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Then there haven't been a few messages trying to get
- 3:27Speaker 3: on who's our friend from Minnesota?
- 3:29Speaker 2: That other guy he killed right away? Yeah, yeah, he
- 3:33Speaker 2: killed right away too. So like it's a thing. And
- 3:37Speaker 2: I've found that, you know, people actually enjoy the information
- 3:43Speaker 2: they get from Refresh, and that's not because of us.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I'm a terrible interviewer, I think sometimes because I just
- 3:47Speaker 2: asked the old mornings or evenings, you know. But you know,
- 3:50Speaker 2: a lot of times it's pretty cool to actually talk
- 3:53Speaker 2: to the boots on the ground folks. And you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: because I don't know what's going on in Maryland, you'll
- 3:57Speaker 2: want to listen to me, but you do want to
- 3:58Speaker 2: listen to Grant Forniy or whoever it may be up
- 4:00Speaker 2: there hunting.
- 4:01Speaker 3: That's uh, you know, knows what's going on in the
- 4:03Speaker 3: woods for sure. Sure, man. Yeah, No, it's been fun.
- 4:07Speaker 3: It's been it's been good. You know. I I I
- 4:10Speaker 3: think I get a little bit maybe I don't know,
- 4:12Speaker 3: jaded or whatever, a little underappreciative of the information that
- 4:16Speaker 3: I get from this podcast, being so tightly connected to
- 4:20Speaker 3: it that I don't sometimes see how much that information
- 4:23Speaker 3: helps me on a week to week basis when I'm hunting. So, uh,
- 4:27Speaker 3: it's good to kind of know that and talk to
- 4:29Speaker 3: people and get a get a good you know idea. Uh.
- 4:32Speaker 3: You know, for instance, one thing you said at one
- 4:35Speaker 3: point was when you killed in Nebraska, you did a
- 4:38Speaker 3: light rattling sequence once you hadn't really been doing and
- 4:41Speaker 3: you talked to Mike Huntsucker about it, and he said
- 4:43Speaker 3: he had done that Colorado, that week, So you try
- 4:46Speaker 3: it and it actually works, you know, stuff like that,
- 4:48Speaker 3: you're like doing the thing that Mike talked about. Yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 3: it's pretty cool for sure. It's uh, that's the thing,
- 4:53Speaker 3: man is It's like, it's not you. It's not like
- 4:54Speaker 3: you haven't heard that before or heard somebody talk about
- 4:57Speaker 3: doing that before. It's just how how event and how
- 5:01Speaker 3: like how you know recent have you heard that information?
- 5:05Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:06Speaker 3: And that's why this is good because whether you're hearing
- 5:08Speaker 3: the same things or not week to week or even
- 5:11Speaker 3: you know, things that you've heard before. When you hear
- 5:14Speaker 3: that that week and then go out in the woods
- 5:16Speaker 3: and maybe try that and be like, oh, yeah, that
- 5:18Speaker 3: was the thing I used to do two years ago. Whatever,
- 5:20Speaker 3: you try that thing again. It works. It's like, man,
- 5:22Speaker 3: that was worth listening to. So I find it valuable
- 5:25Speaker 3: in that way.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, man, I mean it's it's it's cool, and
- 5:29Speaker 2: there's there's some value to having things top of mind,
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, like you might know something, but being reminded
- 5:34Speaker 2: of it it is worth a whole lot too. You
- 5:36Speaker 2: know that we as humans tend to have a problem
- 5:39Speaker 2: with pride, and one of the pride things is that
- 5:41Speaker 2: we think that we know all the right answers, and
- 5:43Speaker 2: if you can just tell yourself, hey, you know, maybe
- 5:44Speaker 2: I should listen to someone else and take their advice
- 5:48Speaker 2: because they kill big deer too.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Works out pretty well. Yeah, we also have a problem
- 5:52Speaker 3: with top of mind stuff right now in our culture,
- 5:55Speaker 3: just because of the smartphone. In my opinion, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 3: it's like this is a thing that as soon as
- 6:01Speaker 3: soon as your mind is at the least but not
- 6:04Speaker 3: just fully entertained or you know, busy, it's like, let
- 6:08Speaker 3: me grab my phone and look at the phone, and
- 6:10Speaker 3: then there's not a whole lot of top of mind
- 6:12Speaker 3: going on except for what you're being fed. So it's
- 6:16Speaker 3: potentially good to sit there and listen to stuff, think
- 6:19Speaker 3: about stuff, and have some things like rattling lightly be
- 6:23Speaker 3: top of mind critical thought. Man, it's important thing I
- 6:26Speaker 3: know how to do.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Guys, I would be remiss if I didn't say something
- 6:30Speaker 2: about it being Christmas time. I mean, Christmas is awesome
- 6:33Speaker 2: for a lot of different reasons. If you believe that
- 6:35Speaker 2: Jesus came to earth. I mean, it's a great time
- 6:37Speaker 2: to celebrate that, it's a great time to be with family,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and it's a great time to absolutely reflect on all
- 6:44Speaker 2: the blessings that we have here as just you know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: inhabitants of this world and to be able to chase
- 6:50Speaker 2: these creatures around. And it's a lot, a lot of fun.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And there are some guys that are out still hunting.
- 6:57Speaker 2: We got some dudes to talk to you this week
- 6:59Speaker 2: about some hunting around I would say the South, the
- 7:03Speaker 2: semi South. We got actually some pretty good reports, right, Tyler,
- 7:07Speaker 2: who are we talking to?
- 7:07Speaker 3: We got a couple of good reports, a couple of
- 7:09Speaker 3: bad reports, you know, or the reports weren't bad, it
- 7:12Speaker 3: was just the numbers that year.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Well, you know, honestly, it's important to be realistic, Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 2: one hundred percent.
- 7:17Speaker 3: That's part of the whole deal, right, that's knowing what
- 7:20Speaker 3: to expect, when to take some time off, when to
- 7:23Speaker 3: you know, spend time away from family or job or whatever.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So this week, you know, we had our friends Scott Harness,
- 7:30Speaker 3: which plug he's he's on this episode, but he's also
- 7:34Speaker 3: on the Element podcast this week. So I think you know,
- 7:39Speaker 3: what I talked to Scott about on the Element podcast
- 7:43Speaker 3: this week was a lot of stuff about being a
- 7:48Speaker 3: good kind of being a good hunting partner or hunting
- 7:51Speaker 3: buddy or whatever. And then also we talked a lot
- 7:54Speaker 3: about like what it's like to hunting Arkansas and what
- 7:57Speaker 3: kind of tactics work. And I think that can and
- 8:00Speaker 3: that can expand to you know, East Texas and Louisiana,
- 8:04Speaker 3: Mississippi and Alabama and Tennessee and some of that stuff,
- 8:07Speaker 3: because you've got kind of that south thing there, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 3: that kind of a south or southeast thing there. So anyway,
- 8:14Speaker 3: that was our podcast this week on the Element podcast.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Feel free to go over there here and just a
- 8:18Speaker 3: little bit probably plug it again at the end, but
- 8:22Speaker 3: I talked to him and or we talked to him
- 8:23Speaker 3: this this week. We also talked to our buddy Rob Mendoza.
- 8:27Speaker 3: He's been in Missouri. I think he had a pretty
- 8:30Speaker 3: much resident there nowadays because of how big of the
- 8:32Speaker 3: deer he's chasing and what he's been after all year.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Rob's got a great report for us. Our own guys
- 8:39Speaker 3: helped us out this week as well. Greg Latham, who
- 8:42Speaker 3: is just a connoisseur of Texas deer hunting. I mean,
- 8:45Speaker 3: he is just all about it, everything about Texas. You know.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Greg likes he likes him some SpaceX, he likes him
- 8:55Speaker 3: some hill country deer hunting. He likes axis deer. In fact,
- 8:59Speaker 3: he shot it access tore and so Greg has given
- 9:03Speaker 3: us a report here in Texas, and I think there's
- 9:05Speaker 3: not hardly a more worthy guy to do that. And
- 9:07Speaker 3: then Casey Knight, who we call Cuppy Cup or Cupcake,
- 9:12Speaker 3: he's on his way to Kentucky right now and has
- 9:16Speaker 3: been there his whole life learning about the Kentucky Way.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So we're gonna get that report from him as well. Awesome,
- 9:22Speaker 3: let's get him on the phone. Now.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've got my brother, Scott Harness. He's hunting Arkansas. Actually
- 9:27Speaker 2: he's in a grocery store hunting up some good old
- 9:29Speaker 2: Christmas food. But he's been out in the woods in Arkansas. Scott,
- 9:33Speaker 2: what's happening, man?
- 9:35Speaker 4: Man?
- 9:35Speaker 5: Just having a good time getting ready for Christmas. The
- 9:37Speaker 5: hours are, they're just melting away. It's almost time, I
- 9:40Speaker 5: guarantee you, dude.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Well, if a feller was still trying to fill an
- 9:45Speaker 2: Arkansas tag, is it a good time right now?
- 9:48Speaker 3: You know you're on the backside of it. I would
- 9:52Speaker 3: say this.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Just looking at my cameras and visiting with my friends,
- 9:55Speaker 5: I'm still seeing a few people killing some nice deer
- 9:59Speaker 5: and it some nice dear encounters, but it's it's not
- 10:02Speaker 5: like it was. There's a lot of nighttime movement and
- 10:05Speaker 5: they've moved back to food. The rut for the most
- 10:07Speaker 5: part of the state is over. Now there's some there's
- 10:09Speaker 5: some pockets where there will be some late rud activity,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and I know a lot of people that capitalize on
- 10:15Speaker 5: that and they swear by it. I have not had
- 10:18Speaker 5: success doing that, but I know if you can find
- 10:20Speaker 5: an acorn tree dropping, and a lot of times I
- 10:24Speaker 5: hear that if you'll have like a year ling or
- 10:26Speaker 5: something come in, or a dough that hadn't been bred.
- 10:28Speaker 5: A lot of times they're pretty dumb. And that big
- 10:30Speaker 5: old buckle just follow men late. He's not as he's
- 10:33Speaker 5: not as on his guard as what he is other
- 10:36Speaker 5: parts of the year.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And they say they'll come in they make a kill.
- 10:38Speaker 4: I personally can't witness to that.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I would say, if you're going to kill a deer
- 10:42Speaker 5: in Arkansas right now, I would shoot whatever comes by,
- 10:45Speaker 5: because that's gonna be probably your best bet.
- 10:48Speaker 3: A lot of your brethren there in Arkansas they go
- 10:51Speaker 3: by the same thing. You know, to shoot whatever comes by.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But do you do you would you hunt? Betting or
- 10:58Speaker 3: food right now. If you had the options, well, I
- 11:02Speaker 3: would hunt food.
- 11:03Speaker 5: That's that's close to to to cover. If you want
- 11:06Speaker 5: to see a buck, I think you can probably get
- 11:08Speaker 5: a little a little bit away from the cover if
- 11:10Speaker 5: you're if you're you know, trying to just put some
- 11:12Speaker 5: meat in the freezer.
- 11:12Speaker 3: But if you're trying to see a buck, you gotta
- 11:14Speaker 3: you gotta go.
- 11:14Speaker 4: You're gonna to be close to where he's he feels secure.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And I move that far you think now.
- 11:20Speaker 5: They're not moving far and they're not moving hardly any
- 11:22Speaker 5: during the daylight. It's that that that testosterone is already
- 11:26Speaker 5: diminished and they're they're back to their weary you know selves.
- 11:30Speaker 5: And so unless there's a but here's the thing, you
- 11:32Speaker 5: know as well as I do, there's that there's that
- 11:34Speaker 5: group of doughs didn't get bread. They'll come back in
- 11:37Speaker 5: and and if you find that, absolutely you might have
- 11:41Speaker 5: a big buck, just one around right in the middle
- 11:42Speaker 5: of the day.
- 11:43Speaker 3: But it's just not like it was. Does the type
- 11:45Speaker 3: of cover matter, like any particular vegetation or or you
- 11:49Speaker 3: just think anything thick? I think anything thick.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I think you know if you're if you're in a
- 11:55Speaker 5: like a thick grassy field. A lot of times this
- 11:57Speaker 5: time of year, that stuff's laid down. So it might
- 12:00Speaker 5: been thick early, but it's not thick now. So you
- 12:02Speaker 5: need to find something that's got some you know, high
- 12:04Speaker 5: stem count. But it's got to be it's got to
- 12:06Speaker 5: be robust because we've had some decent weather and some
- 12:09Speaker 5: of that places that used to be thick, the grass
- 12:12Speaker 5: is laid down and it's not near stick. They like
- 12:14Speaker 5: it thick, thick, I'm talking thick.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:19Speaker 2: So Arkansas is a state you can put corn on
- 12:21Speaker 2: the ground, and I know a lot of people do it,
- 12:22Speaker 2: and I ain't above it either, you know, especially if
- 12:24Speaker 2: you're trying to fill a late season tag. It's a
- 12:26Speaker 2: great way to do it. Do you have any tips
- 12:28Speaker 2: for hunting around bait in the late season.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it's absolutely effective, really really effective. And I do
- 12:39Speaker 5: it as well on some private land. I have a
- 12:40Speaker 5: couple of pieces that I did on and if I
- 12:43Speaker 5: was gonna do corn, the one thing that I don't
- 12:45Speaker 5: see happening, and I'm not seeing it never happens in
- 12:47Speaker 5: another somebody gonna say, well, I see it all the time,
- 12:50Speaker 5: like feeders or mechanical devices. I just find that that
- 12:54Speaker 5: bucks with any age on them at all, they just
- 12:57Speaker 5: don't go around them.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You're better off putting it on the ground.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Back to that is is that it doesn't last long
- 13:02Speaker 5: when you take all the raccoons and everything else. You know,
- 13:05Speaker 5: you gotta be you gotta lay it on the ground,
- 13:07Speaker 5: and you gotta be ready to hunt it, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 5: pretty quick, or it's gonna be it's gonna be eating up.
- 13:12Speaker 5: But I find much better success killing a buck with
- 13:16Speaker 5: any age class late season by putting it on the
- 13:19Speaker 5: ground and not not depending on some type of mechanical feeder.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Cool, all right, So with all that in mind, and
- 13:26Speaker 2: you know the discrepency and rup dates and all that,
- 13:28Speaker 2: but it being pretty late. If you had to give
- 13:30Speaker 2: buck movement daylight buck movement a scale of one to
- 13:33Speaker 2: ten rating in the state of Arkansas, what are you gonna.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Give it over the next week?
- 13:37Speaker 5: Man, I'm gonna I hate to be Debbie of the Downer,
- 13:40Speaker 5: but I'm gonna say five.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Hey, I mean that's bad. That's bad. I ain't this
- 13:45Speaker 3: neither down or up. Honestly, it's right.
- 13:47Speaker 4: In the middle, you know.
- 13:47Speaker 2: So that's pretty good. Yeah, I appreciate the report. Scott
- 13:52Speaker 2: and appreciate you so much.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Brother. Merry Christmas. Yeah, absolutely, Merry Christmas.
- 13:57Speaker 2: On the phone, I've got my buddy Rob Mendos with tether.
- 14:01Speaker 2: He is down hunting in Missouri and he's just giving
- 14:05Speaker 2: us a hard time. Honestly, he's just being a goofball. So, dude,
- 14:09Speaker 2: what's happening?
- 14:10Speaker 6: Not much, guys, how are you? How you been?
- 14:13Speaker 2: Good man?
- 14:14Speaker 3: Merry Christmas.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Merry Christmas to you too and everybody out there listening.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Thanks, dude.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think it's cool that, like you're figuring out how
- 14:21Speaker 2: to hunt on Christmas Eve.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you just have to have a family with a
- 14:28Speaker 6: farm and then get your your father in law down there,
- 14:31Speaker 6: and it's like you're still with family, but you're kind
- 14:33Speaker 6: of not.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Yeah, easy enough.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yeah it works, man, that's cool. So you've been doing
- 14:38Speaker 2: some hunting in Missouri. What are you doing right now?
- 14:40Speaker 3: Man?
- 14:41Speaker 6: They're moving, they're moving in the daylight. Mark, I get
- 14:44Speaker 6: a lot of activity the first two hours of daylight, obviously,
- 14:50Speaker 6: and then last night I had five bucks within thirty
- 14:52Speaker 6: yards or three of them at the same time, and
- 14:55Speaker 6: all of them within an hour of each other, about
- 15:00Speaker 6: an hour left the daylight, and they were crushing the
- 15:04Speaker 6: some acorns?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Really? What are those? Oh? Yeah, I got you? Okay,
- 15:11Speaker 3: I got you.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Now I forgot my dialog.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah you're in the South, now, bro, you gotta say
- 15:15Speaker 3: it right when you're Missouri. I don't know about that.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Well, he's in South Missouri. Yeah, uh spit. But I
- 15:23Speaker 2: kind of to actually play off of that a little bit.
- 15:25Speaker 2: What kind of acorns are those that that the deer's
- 15:27Speaker 2: still eating?
- 15:28Speaker 6: These are actually where I was? Are the runnants of
- 15:31Speaker 6: the white oaks?
- 15:32Speaker 3: Really?
- 15:33Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 15:34Speaker 3: How about that?
- 15:35Speaker 6: Was there a big surprise that I replaced some camera batteries,
- 15:38Speaker 6: not really expecting much out of this one particular camera.
- 15:41Speaker 6: But this ridge system is just getting hammered, it's getting
- 15:45Speaker 6: lit up.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Was it was there a big drop? I mean, was
- 15:47Speaker 3: there a ton of acorns that dropped earlier this fall?
- 15:51Speaker 3: Or was it just not a normal thing and they just,
- 15:54Speaker 3: you know, they're they were especially heavy? Yeah?
- 15:56Speaker 6: Okay, okay, yeah, probably i'd be looking for the was red,
- 16:01Speaker 6: you know. But yeah, they seem to have enough left
- 16:05Speaker 6: over that they're hitting them or at least scavenging them.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Do you is there any sort of retin action that
- 16:11Speaker 3: you can see or have seen on camera?
- 16:13Speaker 6: I had two little bucks just messing around a lot
- 16:16Speaker 6: of active scrapes, and I thought that it was probably
- 16:19Speaker 6: just the dose, but the camera's told me otherwise, and
- 16:23Speaker 6: watching him make a scrape yesterday, but it was probably,
- 16:26Speaker 6: you know, a two and a half year old deer
- 16:28Speaker 6: doing it. Let me two and a half year old
- 16:30Speaker 6: deer battling each other for a minute.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Let me ask you this the So I've seen late
- 16:35Speaker 3: season scrapes where deer don't even scrape the ground, but
- 16:40Speaker 3: they'll use the licking branch. Still, did you actually see
- 16:43Speaker 3: this deer scrape the ground with his hoofs?
- 16:45Speaker 6: So the mega that I'm after it did was doing
- 16:49Speaker 6: what you were talking about, just hitting the licking branch.
- 16:52Speaker 6: The two and a half year old yesterday was digging
- 16:55Speaker 6: in the scrape.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Gotcha.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So what kind of inferences are you making off of
- 17:00Speaker 2: that show camera data? Are you just trying to inventory
- 17:02Speaker 2: and see where that big Bucky is or are you
- 17:04Speaker 2: kind of using that to backtrack him to betting?
- 17:07Speaker 6: Now I'm trying to backtrack him to betting so that
- 17:09Speaker 6: I can figure out where he's coming from, where he's
- 17:11Speaker 6: going to. I thought last night was definitely one of
- 17:15Speaker 6: my more high probability just based on what he was
- 17:18Speaker 6: doing leaving the property the night before the wind and
- 17:23Speaker 6: then his routine.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Of coming back on the property. So he just didn't
- 17:27Speaker 3: read the script. Are you are you? Do you have
- 17:31Speaker 3: any agg around or is it pretty much just fully
- 17:33Speaker 3: reliant on white oaks? No, there's not.
- 17:38Speaker 6: I don't think, Well, your neighbors aren't farming anything right now.
- 17:43Speaker 6: I don't think there's much eg around here. There's a
- 17:45Speaker 6: couple little food plots in a neighboring property.
- 17:49Speaker 3: So would you if you had food plots you think
- 17:51Speaker 3: that'd be more effective than acorns right now?
- 17:56Speaker 6: Yeah, I feel like that might give some give a
- 17:58Speaker 6: man an advantage.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Really, So if you were if you had that on
- 18:03Speaker 3: on a on the uh neighbor's property, you would you
- 18:06Speaker 3: would be hunting deer that were moving to that as
- 18:08Speaker 3: opposed to finding places that there's still white oak a
- 18:11Speaker 3: white oak acorns on the ground.
- 18:13Speaker 6: If I wanted to kill any buck, I'd probably be
- 18:17Speaker 6: hunting over a food plot. If I wanted to kill
- 18:21Speaker 6: a smart, mature animal who's been a hunted hard all
- 18:23Speaker 6: season by all my neighboring properties, I'd probably be on
- 18:27Speaker 6: on acorns.
- 18:28Speaker 3: M Yeah, would you would you prefer to shoot this
- 18:32Speaker 3: deer this year or have a chance out of next year?
- 18:36Speaker 6: Oh, I'm letting that God decide that one.
- 18:39Speaker 3: There you go, gotcha, gotcha? Very cool to you. Well,
- 18:44Speaker 3: it sounds like you're on the deer. Uh.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And it's you know, honestly a pretty uh. I don't know,
- 18:49Speaker 2: just optimistic outlook on things. So I'm ready to hear
- 18:52Speaker 2: what your number is on a scale of one to
- 18:54Speaker 2: ten for buck movement in Missouri?
- 18:57Speaker 3: What are you going to give it over the next
- 18:58Speaker 3: week based off the.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Past three days of having my cameras alive again, I'm
- 19:04Speaker 6: gonna put it out a nine.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Whoa, that is way up there.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Yeah, it's not a nine for everybody? Then, thank you Jesus.
- 19:16Speaker 7: There you go, dude.
- 19:16Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Well, hey, y'all go have a merry Christmas, have some
- 19:19Speaker 2: phone family, and I appreciate the report.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Dude, Hey, take care of guys.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year everybody.
- 19:50Speaker 2: My good friend and guy who films me a lot,
- 19:53Speaker 2: Greg Latham has been hunting in Texas, hunting like a maniac.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Actually, Greg, what's happening, bro? Uh?
- 20:00Speaker 8: No much, just trying to get a deer killed before
- 20:02Speaker 8: the end of the Texas season.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Hey, I have a question for you. Is this the
- 20:06Speaker 2: latest that you haven't filled a Texas tag ever?
- 20:10Speaker 3: Uh?
- 20:11Speaker 8: Well, the first deer I ever killed, I kill him
- 20:14Speaker 8: December twenty sixth.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Gotcha, you possibly will be.
- 20:19Speaker 2: You got a few days. You might kill a deer tonight.
- 20:21Speaker 2: So that's uh, that's kind of cool. But the wind cooperates, yeah, ooh, yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 2: that's a whole nother thing right at the weather. So
- 20:28Speaker 2: let's talk about that in in in Texas right now?
- 20:31Speaker 3: Whatater deer doing?
- 20:33Speaker 8: Uh in Texas right now? The deer we're going everywhere
- 20:36Speaker 8: this past week, but uh, the weather's not really cooperating
- 20:42Speaker 8: neither cold front for deer to get really going. But
- 20:46Speaker 8: it's a it's been pretty good.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, gotcha.
- 20:49Speaker 2: So do you have cameras that are looking pretty good
- 20:52Speaker 2: and you still have some pretty good suspects on the ground.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 8: I do have a giant buck I'm after right now,
- 21:00Speaker 8: and he's been daylighting almost every day. Kind of it
- 21:03Speaker 8: doesn't even matter what the weather is, but he's been
- 21:05Speaker 8: showing up.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Gotcha. That's cool. So what's it take weather wise? Are
- 21:11Speaker 2: you trying to find a cold front? Are you trying
- 21:13Speaker 2: to find just the right wind, or like, what's the deal?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Why is he so hard to kill?
- 21:17Speaker 8: Well, I've been waiting for a cold morning to like
- 21:20Speaker 8: a frost, but I don't know if we're gonna get it.
- 21:22Speaker 8: But I think I'm gonna get some lower forties here
- 21:25Speaker 8: that next week, and I think that's when I'm gonna
- 21:28Speaker 8: go in and try to kill him.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Why do you need colder weather.
- 21:32Speaker 8: Well, he seems to daylight mostly on the coldest day.
- 21:37Speaker 3: He for sure daylight's on the coldest day.
- 21:40Speaker 8: So if I can get that weather front, I'm probably
- 21:42Speaker 8: gonna go in and try to kill him.
- 21:44Speaker 3: So when he daylights on days that aren't cold, you're
- 21:49Speaker 3: afraid that it's too aggressive and you might spook him,
- 21:53Speaker 3: like once he gets in there, or what he's coming
- 21:55Speaker 3: in or after you know it's dark and you leave
- 21:57Speaker 3: or what.
- 21:59Speaker 8: Yeah, if I go in there, I want to kill him.
- 22:01Speaker 8: I don't want to mess around. Like sometimes on hotter
- 22:05Speaker 8: days he's gonna show up, you know, the last few
- 22:07Speaker 8: minutes of daylight. But on the cold, colder weather day,
- 22:10Speaker 8: he usually shows up with good daylight.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Got you so can you still in Texas? You know
- 22:16Speaker 3: kind of use rut top tactics. So you're gonna be
- 22:18Speaker 3: able to rake trees or rattle or whatever to kill deer.
- 22:21Speaker 8: Right now in this particular part of Texas, I don't
- 22:25Speaker 8: think so. But there are other parts of Texas it's
- 22:28Speaker 8: like it's going down right now.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Got But how would you determine if that's if you
- 22:33Speaker 2: are in the zone on that, I.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Mean judgment from trail camera data. I mean, you can
- 22:40Speaker 8: kind of tell if the deer fired up or not.
- 22:43Speaker 8: But I just know from history that this particular part
- 22:48Speaker 8: of Texas is not the it's not going down right now,
- 22:53Speaker 8: but there's still a little bit of red activity, but
- 22:56Speaker 8: it's not as far as up fired up as they
- 22:58Speaker 8: were like a month ago.
- 22:59Speaker 3: So are there any Are there any food sources outside
- 23:02Speaker 3: of corn that you you could focus on if you
- 23:05Speaker 3: were in that part of Texas that had a little
- 23:07Speaker 3: less red action going on.
- 23:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, if you had wheat or oats planted,
- 23:11Speaker 8: it would be it would be on. Like you're you're
- 23:15Speaker 8: seeing a ton of deer and I'm kind of worried
- 23:17Speaker 8: that my neighbors down the road have oats planted, and
- 23:21Speaker 8: I'm worried that this buck might end up down there.
- 23:25Speaker 3: So would you if you had, say you had a
- 23:27Speaker 3: food planted like that, or or you had a wheat
- 23:30Speaker 3: field planted on the neighbors next to you, would you
- 23:32Speaker 3: hunt closer to the betting or closer to the food
- 23:35Speaker 3: if you had an idea where the betting.
- 23:36Speaker 8: Was, I would hunt closer to the food. Right now,
- 23:42Speaker 8: deer seemed to be hammering food. We've had a couple
- 23:44Speaker 8: of frosts and it seems like everything's dead. So they're
- 23:48Speaker 8: hammering food right now.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Gotcha? Gotcha?
- 23:51Speaker 2: Is there any way that you could hunt a deer
- 23:54Speaker 2: on a morning right now or is it just too risky?
- 23:57Speaker 8: It's possible, but it's just it's just hard to know
- 24:00Speaker 8: where they're coming from. In the evenings, it's like you
- 24:04Speaker 8: kind of identify where the betting is and slip in
- 24:07Speaker 8: and like get between them and the food, and it's
- 24:10Speaker 8: not that hard. But in the in the mornings, you
- 24:12Speaker 8: don't know where they're at, and they could be out
- 24:15Speaker 8: cruising around and.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Giving the left.
- 24:17Speaker 8: I think, yeah, give me this.
- 24:22Speaker 3: So in the next week, if you had to put
- 24:24Speaker 3: a number on buck movement in the daytime on a
- 24:27Speaker 3: scale of one to ten, what are you gonna give it? Uh?
- 24:31Speaker 8: Where I'm hunting right now, it's gonna be about a six.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Gotcha? What about it? What about elsewhere where? You say
- 24:37Speaker 3: it's going on.
- 24:38Speaker 8: Elsewhere, there's place in Texas that's going down. I'd say
- 24:42Speaker 8: the next week is an eight or nine.
- 24:43Speaker 2: All right, good numbers out there, sir Well. I have
- 24:47Speaker 2: full confidence that you're gonna get it done this week.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Man. Uh, Merry Christmas to kill a big buck. Yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 3: Merry Christmas. This is the Element's own Casey Night.
- 24:57Speaker 2: He is currently in root to the second greatest state
- 25:03Speaker 2: in the country, Kentucky, to get you know, some of
- 25:07Speaker 2: that home cooking, but also to do a little deer hunt.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Right You've been kind of conversing with friends and family
- 25:15Speaker 2: and and looking at Chuck Hard and pictures and stuff.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Man, what's going on in Kentucky right now?
- 25:19Speaker 9: Casey Well, I think you know the party's pretty much over.
- 25:26Speaker 9: You know, it's I think it's time to just start
- 25:28Speaker 9: going back to hunting.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Bed to food.
- 25:31Speaker 9: You might have a little bit of rud action if
- 25:34Speaker 9: you have a hot dough in the area for some
- 25:36Speaker 9: stupid reason, but other than that, you know two words
- 25:41Speaker 9: corn pile. That's probably what what if you have that option,
- 25:47Speaker 9: you need to be focusing on because some some kind
- 25:49Speaker 9: as you can't bait anymore. So, but if you have
- 25:51Speaker 9: that option to hunt over you know, a bait pile
- 25:55Speaker 9: or just a good food source in general, I'd say
- 25:57Speaker 9: that's probably your best bed.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Corn pile is one word Eese Texas In case you're wondering,
- 26:03Speaker 3: So what if you don't have that option? Is there
- 26:07Speaker 3: like cut agfields or something that deer using, you know.
- 26:13Speaker 9: I'd say yeah, probably if I mean, you know, if
- 26:17Speaker 9: you have you know, act like a cut cornfield or
- 26:20Speaker 9: something that you know, some corns left over from the harvest.
- 26:24Speaker 4: I've seen them, like on my lease.
- 26:26Speaker 9: That happens quite a bit when there's corn, you know,
- 26:29Speaker 9: the farmer hill cut and then there's quite a bit
- 26:31Speaker 9: of corn just scattered on the ground and I'll see
- 26:33Speaker 9: him beating on it up until like late January or
- 26:36Speaker 9: whenever the seasons, I guess.
- 26:39Speaker 2: So, do you think that you could hunt mornings still
- 26:42Speaker 2: or is it pretty much gonna be evenings only at
- 26:44Speaker 2: this point in time?
- 26:45Speaker 4: I mean historically when I hunt this time of yere,
- 26:49Speaker 4: I'm seeing most of the action in the evenings for sure.
- 26:54Speaker 3: What's the what's the weather looking like in the next week,
- 26:56Speaker 3: Are we gonna get any cold weather?
- 26:59Speaker 9: From what I saw, I don't think it's going to
- 27:01Speaker 9: be super cold. I think I mean most of the
- 27:04Speaker 9: days are going to be in the forties or fifties,
- 27:07Speaker 9: which I feel like is a little bit warm for
- 27:10Speaker 9: this time of year. Usually usually I think by this
- 27:13Speaker 9: time we're seeing like thirties. I mean, sometimes we'll get
- 27:16Speaker 9: in the twenties. But I think it's gonna be pretty
- 27:18Speaker 9: warm in this next coming week.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Yeah, for those northern latitudes. So you expect that deer
- 27:27Speaker 3: movement is going to be late in the evening or
- 27:30Speaker 3: is that going to depend on any other variables.
- 27:33Speaker 4: I would expect late in the evening.
- 27:35Speaker 9: I know last year I was on quite a bit
- 27:38Speaker 9: in like late December early January, and I wasn't really
- 27:43Speaker 9: seeing much until the last I mean the last hour
- 27:46Speaker 9: a lot pretty much.
- 27:48Speaker 3: So that that would mean that if you had a
- 27:50Speaker 3: bunch of holiday stuff going on, but you're only able
- 27:53Speaker 3: to get out for the last hour or so, that
- 27:55Speaker 3: it would still be worth going out. Probably.
- 27:57Speaker 9: Yeah, I'd say if you've got a buck on camera
- 28:00Speaker 9: that you know is hitting food consistently and you kind
- 28:03Speaker 9: of know what he's doing, I'd say it's definitely still
- 28:05Speaker 9: worth getting.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Out there, gotcha. Gotcha.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Okay, So are you going to spend much time glassing
- 28:13Speaker 2: and observing or since you have kind of like a
- 28:16Speaker 2: short amount of time here, you're just going to hop
- 28:17Speaker 2: in in a place that's historically good.
- 28:20Speaker 9: Probably, I'm just gonna hop in a place that I
- 28:23Speaker 9: know I've seen him use in the past. That's probably.
- 28:27Speaker 9: I think that's going to be my best option at
- 28:29Speaker 9: this point.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, gotcha. Do you have decent targets that are still
- 28:32Speaker 2: showing up on uh camera? I know, you know, we
- 28:35Speaker 2: kind of talked like Kentucky doesn't have a lot of
- 28:37Speaker 2: a gun season, but you said their gun season is
- 28:39Speaker 2: in the heart of the rut, So I would imagine
- 28:40Speaker 2: that kind of puts an impact on how many are
- 28:43Speaker 2: still around.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely noticeable.
- 28:46Speaker 9: Uh you know, you have all these deer on camera
- 28:50Speaker 9: before gun season, then once getting season, it's all disappear
- 28:53Speaker 9: because they're probably all there.
- 28:56Speaker 4: But yeah, I don't I have a like maybe two.
- 29:00Speaker 9: On camera that I might shoot, but the pretty time,
- 29:03Speaker 9: I pretty love steam.
- 29:05Speaker 3: So are they going to be would you be closer
- 29:08Speaker 3: to betting or would you be closer to food in
- 29:10Speaker 3: this situation, Well.
- 29:13Speaker 9: I probably I like being close to bedding because you
- 29:18Speaker 9: have a better chance of seeing him earlier on in
- 29:20Speaker 9: the evening if you're closer to bedding, catching them going
- 29:22Speaker 9: from the bed to food.
- 29:23Speaker 4: So I like to be closer to bed.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Gotcha, gotcha, we know that. Yeah, we know you like sleep.
- 29:31Speaker 2: All right, guys, I'm gonna use his nickname because that's
- 29:34Speaker 2: how we actually know him. And this is Cupcake, Cuppy
- 29:38Speaker 2: or cup and so cup. If you had to rank
- 29:44Speaker 2: buck movement daylight buck movement on a scale of one
- 29:46Speaker 2: to ten in the state of Kentucky over the next week,
- 29:49Speaker 2: what would you give it.
- 29:51Speaker 4: I'm gonna have to give it a three. Three.
- 29:54Speaker 9: There's still a chance you might catch a little bit
- 29:57Speaker 9: of ruddy Buck, but I think chances are pretty slim.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Hey, I appreciate the honest number three is a very
- 30:05Speaker 2: realistic number I would imagine.
- 30:06Speaker 3: So a way to go, dude.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Hey, I hope you still get it done up there, man,
- 30:09Speaker 2: and I appreciate you, dude.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Merry Christmas.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, y'all too, Merry Christmas.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Man.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Those are better reports than I expected for the last
- 30:18Speaker 2: retfresh of the season. There's still a lot of optimism
- 30:21Speaker 2: and a lot of reason to be in the woods.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I hope everybody gets what they wanted for Christmas, and
- 30:26Speaker 2: what you should have wanted was just some time with
- 30:29Speaker 2: your family and friends and to be thankful for the
- 30:32Speaker 2: stuff that we get and bucks. Yeah maybe you maybe
- 30:36Speaker 2: you did get something that you really wanted, like a
- 30:38Speaker 2: new Element T shirt or something.
- 30:40Speaker 3: Who knows, Yeah you didn't because.
- 30:45Speaker 2: But anyways, guys, thank y'all so much for listening throughout
- 30:49Speaker 2: this season. It's been a blast getting to talk to
- 30:50Speaker 2: everybody and to actually hear from folks who said that
- 30:54Speaker 2: Refresh helped them out. And I'm thankful that, uh, the
- 30:57Speaker 2: effort that we can put in can actually be useful
- 30:59Speaker 2: for you all to get some good information.
- 31:01Speaker 3: From Hey, quick tip, don't just focus on your family.
- 31:05Speaker 3: There are people out there that can be kind of
- 31:07Speaker 3: lonely this time of year, So make sure that you
- 31:10Speaker 3: send a text to somebody if you think they might
- 31:12Speaker 3: not have a whole lot of family goings on. Might
- 31:16Speaker 3: just be the thing that helps them optimistically get through
- 31:20Speaker 3: this season. So do that real quick, and then also
- 31:23Speaker 3: head on over to the Element podcast here in just
- 31:25Speaker 3: a second and check out the episode that I did
- 31:28Speaker 3: with Scott pre Christmas here this week on the Element
- 31:32Speaker 3: podcast about Arkansas hunting and just live stuff and appreciate
- 31:37Speaker 3: all the support on the Element podcast as well here
- 31:39Speaker 3: on the Wire to Hunt podcast. You guys keep the
- 31:43Speaker 3: lights on and make this thing a possibility for us
- 31:45Speaker 3: and we're blessed by you guys for sure. Marry Christmas.
- 31:49Speaker 2: This has been rough, fresh, keep it fresh.
