- 0:01Speaker 1: Was seven year old Mike Gallagher aware of Ode to
- 0:05Speaker 1: Billy Joe from the Great Bobby Gentry kind.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I remember it growing up. I love the song, I
- 0:10Speaker 2: love the story, I love those I love those story songs,
- 0:13Speaker 2: the Tell.
- 0:14Speaker 3: And Vicky Lawrence Night the Light Swiming a Georgia exactly
- 0:17Speaker 3: so always the Gentry go ahead. I'm sorry, aod. Bobby
- 0:20Speaker 3: Gentry is eighty four, she's she's eighty four, So she is.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And that was nineteen sixty seven, and three years later
- 0:27Speaker 1: I talked about her as the seventies. Her next huge
- 0:30Speaker 1: record later covered by Reba McIntire. Everybody thinks it's a
- 0:33Speaker 1: Reba record, it's not. It's a Bobby Gentry record. A
- 0:37Speaker 1: fancy here's your one chance, fans, and don't let me down.
- 0:40Speaker 1: A wonderful story. Horror woman grooms her daughter for prostitution
- 0:43Speaker 1: and we're supposed to feel great about it.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Vicky Lawrence had the strangest career trajectory I've ever seen
- 0:48Speaker 2: in my life. She was hired to be on the
- 0:50Speaker 2: Carol Burnett Show allegedly because she looked like Carol Burnett
- 0:54Speaker 2: and could keep up with her. Of course, she turned
- 0:56Speaker 2: into a comic genius. With Mama and Mama's family, but
- 0:59Speaker 2: then m up with this big top forty hit. I thought,
- 1:02Speaker 2: what a strange, odd career that must be.
- 1:05Speaker 3: So have you ever spoken with her? Have you ever
- 1:07Speaker 3: spoken with her?
- 1:08Speaker 2: I have not?
- 1:08Speaker 1: Have you shit a couple of times She'll roll through
- 1:11Speaker 1: and do like one of those. Every once in a while,
- 1:13Speaker 1: these people who are these iconic cultural figures, they will
- 1:17Speaker 1: like an evening with and it'll be like the old
- 1:20Speaker 1: stories and stuff, and people just love going in and
- 1:23Speaker 1: listen to her talk about that because I got to
- 1:25Speaker 1: tell you, I think it's as much admiration as it gets.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Vintage Carol Burnett show peak, Carol, tim Conway, Harvey Korman,
- 1:35Speaker 1: Lyle Wagner, VICKI Lawrence is as good as a variety
- 1:40Speaker 1: show television ever got.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, there was a great genre. Sonny and Share.
- 1:44Speaker 2: They did that whole variety show.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Do Sonny and Share Comedy the Sonny and I think
- 1:49Speaker 1: it was called the Sonny and Share Comedy Hour, I believe.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And of course they had obviously a lot of hit records.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But that dog On show was well written. It was funny,
- 1:57Speaker 1: it was really really speaking.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Of things well written. I'm in New York for a day.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I had some friends invite me to the Ley Miserob
- 2:04Speaker 2: World Concert Tour at Radio City Music Hall last night.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Whoa Mark Market is right?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I know?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, I'm sorry. And that's that.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That's not dismissiveness, that's yeah, that's just me saying I
- 2:19Speaker 1: probably should have.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and I really kind of have.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Not one of one of the great classic musicals. Of course,
- 2:26Speaker 2: it was an import I think from France and then
- 2:29Speaker 2: went through the UK. But gosh, what a great show.
- 2:31Speaker 2: And they did this if you like theater, I did
- 2:33Speaker 2: a I did a two show day yesterday. I was exhausted.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mean, as an actor, as a wanna bee, I
- 2:39Speaker 2: should have been up there on stage. Of course, in
- 2:41Speaker 2: theater they call it a two doche when you've got
- 2:44Speaker 2: a matinee and an evening performance. So my two doche
- 2:47Speaker 2: consisted of a cuticle musical called Maybe Happy Ending, which
- 2:51Speaker 2: won the Tony for Best Musical. And I can see why.
- 2:53Speaker 2: It's a delightful little show Asian import. I think it
- 2:56Speaker 2: came from South Korea about and of course it's fascinating
- 2:59Speaker 2: about a helper bot. This guy is a robot and
- 3:03Speaker 2: it's kind of I guess in the future, and he
- 3:06Speaker 2: was abandoned by his owner because his owner got sick.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But he, you know, this helper bot, this Asian guy
- 3:12Speaker 2: would just, i mean just looked kind of almost almost
- 3:16Speaker 2: almost authentically human. But what happens when the when the
- 3:20Speaker 2: helper bot has feelings for the owner. He loved him,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know, the owner taught him things and and and
- 3:25Speaker 2: then the guy abandoned him, and he was waiting for
- 3:27Speaker 2: him to come back and get him, and then he
- 3:28Speaker 2: decided to go find him, and it's and he falls
- 3:31Speaker 2: in love with another helper bot. She was again this
- 3:34Speaker 2: really neat cute little story. If you're in New York,
- 3:37Speaker 2: if you dare risk New York and look, I bag
- 3:40Speaker 2: on the city all the time now that I left,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and I'd probably be bagging on the city now under
- 3:45Speaker 2: zoor On Mom, Donnie, even if I still lived here.
- 3:47Speaker 2: But dog, it's still New York. It's still Broadway.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Your love and I share that love. I love going there.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's it's it's the most incredible city in the world.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's America's biggest city. And I love It's been a
- 3:59Speaker 1: while since we've been and I don't want to believe
- 4:02Speaker 1: that Zoron has destroyed it sufficiently that it's no longer
- 4:05Speaker 1: safe and no longer worth going.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I don't know if I'm walking.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Around late at night in Midtown at the moment, you know, it's.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Not I mean, you can. I mean, look, it's it's
- 4:16Speaker 2: it's a chance, I think, because there's a lot the
- 4:20Speaker 2: I noticed the hotel I stay at in midtime, which
- 4:22Speaker 2: is Midtown, which is right near a homeless encampment of
- 4:26Speaker 2: are not a homeland illegal encampment, rather of migrants who
- 4:31Speaker 2: are in this big hotel, the Row Hotel that's been
- 4:35Speaker 2: taken over by the city to house the illegals. For
- 4:38Speaker 2: a while there before Mom Donnie took over, that was
- 4:41Speaker 2: getting cleared out, and they were there were very few
- 4:44Speaker 2: people on case. Right there on Eighth Avenue is where
- 4:46Speaker 2: they all hang out. At eleven twelve, one o'clock in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the morning, little kids, little toddlers on little scooters. They're
- 4:52Speaker 2: driving up and down Eighth Avenue at midnight, and these
- 4:55Speaker 2: kids ought to be in bed. But it's it's families
- 4:58Speaker 2: of Hispanics who are out there just roaming the streets
- 5:02Speaker 2: because they're being housed in a luxury hotel. I'm sure
- 5:06Speaker 2: a taxpayer expense because mom Donnie doesn't want to enforce
- 5:11Speaker 2: any of the he's giving them all kinds of sanctuary status.
- 5:14Speaker 2: That's back, that's dangerous. The smell of pot is everywhere.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That's probably not your cop of tea. But now you
- 5:21Speaker 2: know they've delegalized marijuana here, so everybody's just smoking it
- 5:24Speaker 2: on the street corner. And you get your occasional you know,
- 5:27Speaker 2: poor victim lit on fire or stabbed on the subway
- 5:30Speaker 2: or something. So it's not I mean this.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Guy Friday and Slip.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You had a Friday and Slip to a moment ago
- 5:35Speaker 1: that spoke to a larger truth because you mentioned about
- 5:37Speaker 1: the illegals you mentioned, you said homeless. There is also
- 5:41Speaker 1: the twelve or thirteen blocks of homeless encampment correct, from
- 5:44Speaker 1: like Hudson Yards up to the USS Intrepid Museum on
- 5:47Speaker 1: the west side on the Hudson River. And that thing
- 5:49Speaker 1: grows by the day, and he will do nothing to
- 5:51Speaker 1: stop that eye.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Did you see the Sid Rosenberg rant from Fox and
- 5:56Speaker 2: Friends over the weekend that went viral, Well, I'm going
- 5:58Speaker 2: to play every bit of it. It's glorious. He goes up, Well, look,
- 6:02Speaker 2: he just flat out calls Mam Donnie a terrorist. Now,
- 6:05Speaker 2: this is a New York City based talk show host.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You've seen him, Sid Rosenberg. He is such a he's
- 6:10Speaker 2: a really good guy. He's a bombastic guy. He and
- 6:13Speaker 2: I were on the on a media panel together a
- 6:15Speaker 2: while ago here in the city. He's got he's he's
- 6:18Speaker 2: such a quintessential looking New Yorker. He's bald headed, the
- 6:22Speaker 2: shiny bald head, deep tan, white sport coat. You know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: always wears these flashy, colorful clothes. And he's just a
- 6:31Speaker 2: typical kind of a guy, like a right from Central Casting.
- 6:34Speaker 1: He's a I'm looking at him right now. He totally
- 6:37Speaker 1: looks like he should be in almost any drama or
- 6:39Speaker 1: comedy about New York City.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Absolutely ought to be here. He should be an extra
- 6:44Speaker 2: in the Sopranos. I mean, he's just right there, right
- 6:46Speaker 2: out of anyway, he went on a rant and he
- 6:49Speaker 2: just said, look, Mam Donnie's a terrorist. He sympathizes with terrorists.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Of course, the Fox and Friends people are ready to
- 6:55Speaker 2: slump over. You can see their eyes get all buggy.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Griff Jenkins said, well, now I think we to apologize
- 7:00Speaker 2: for calling the mayor of terrorists and people are like no,
- 7:03Speaker 2: let him have it, you know, I mean, it's it's bad,
- 7:06Speaker 2: and mom Donnie's getting worse and worse by the day.
- 7:09Speaker 2: The New York Times today has a big article how
- 7:11Speaker 2: Mam Donni has political capital and he intends to use it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So is his anointing.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I mean, he's not the flip side of a Trump
- 7:20Speaker 1: endorsement yet, but his Democrat you know, the sword to
- 7:23Speaker 1: the shoulder of knighthood can be pretty beneficial. Last thirty seconds,
- 7:27Speaker 1: having mentioned because I looked up maybe Happy Ending, the
- 7:30Speaker 1: little play you mentioned. Oh yeah, you're you're a big
- 7:34Speaker 1: travel guy.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I tried.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm trying to be trying to get out of the
- 7:37Speaker 1: state and out of the country at some point.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I and you've done a lot of Japan lately, I have.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I am fascinated by South Korea, and especially because maybe
- 7:48Speaker 1: Happy Ending South Korea. Squid Game, South Korea BTS part
- 7:53Speaker 1: of that. You know, we haven't talked about and we
- 7:55Speaker 1: don't need to. For ten minutes. What a delightful halftime
- 7:59Speaker 1: show they had for the World Cup final. BTS part
- 8:02Speaker 1: of it, Madonna and Justin Bieber and stuff like that.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But South Korea, Korea a huge, massive, major cultural force,
- 8:09Speaker 1: of the moment in music and film, in musicals, and.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Would I would love to go to South Korea. It's
- 8:16Speaker 2: one of the places on my bucket list because I would.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't. I wonder if it's kind of like Japan
- 8:21Speaker 2: in the same vibe whereat And I heard people talking
- 8:24Speaker 2: about those on the elevator the other day, how they
- 8:26Speaker 2: had gone to Japan and they were and I just
- 8:28Speaker 2: stayed out of the conversation, but they started talking to
- 8:30Speaker 2: each other about how clean, how how efficient, how everything works,
- 8:34Speaker 2: how everything is brand new, how people are so friendly.
- 8:37Speaker 2: You know why they don't have trash cans in Tokyo
- 8:40Speaker 2: in the city because people would never dream of dropping
- 8:44Speaker 2: any litter on the sidewalk. They hold it with themselves,
- 8:46Speaker 2: They put it in their pockets until they get to
- 8:48Speaker 2: the next place, and then they throw it out. It's
- 8:50Speaker 2: pretty amazing. And then I compare it well here to
- 8:53Speaker 2: New York. I mean, the buck is a trash everywhere.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Homeless people. I don't see a lot of homeless people
- 8:59Speaker 2: in Tokyo, so I'm not sure what they do with
- 9:01Speaker 2: those folks. But you know, and you mentioned DSA. I
- 9:05Speaker 2: hope people saw the DSA one of the big shots.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, mark their agenda. I don't know how
- 9:14Speaker 2: you talk to a normal Democrat and say, how do
- 9:16Speaker 2: you feel to know that this has taken over your party.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Let's abolish the Pentagon, let's abolish the presidency, let's abolish
- 9:23Speaker 2: the Senate. Let's not have any borders, let's not have
- 9:26Speaker 2: any police. I mean, you understand, these people are ba
- 9:30Speaker 2: crap crazy, and we're acting like it's legitimate. And ps
- 9:35Speaker 2: they're winning. They're winning elections.
- 9:37Speaker 1: The normy Democrats, the mainstream old school Democrats, are now terrified,
- 9:42Speaker 1: especially the ones who are running for office, because in
- 9:44Speaker 1: a way they dare not say, hey, I think those
- 9:47Speaker 1: people might be a little bit crazy, because then they
- 9:50Speaker 1: are at risk of violating the flavor of the month,
- 9:54Speaker 1: maybe endangering their own police.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Oh, they'll infuriate the so called base right now. I
- 9:59Speaker 2: still hold out hope that there's more of us than
- 10:01Speaker 2: there are of them, But if not, we're you know
- 10:04Speaker 2: what I'm And I was very intrigued by your back
- 10:07Speaker 2: and forth with Rob Schneider because both of you, I
- 10:10Speaker 2: think are right. Because he is right about what's happening
- 10:13Speaker 2: in Texas. She is absolutely correct. You're right to say
- 10:17Speaker 2: there's Republicans trying to stop it. But Mark, have they
- 10:20Speaker 2: have they stopped it? Have they watched it?
- 10:22Speaker 1: I give you and that I will give the Rob.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Let me see if he has gotten back in touch
- 10:26Speaker 1: with me.
- 10:26Speaker 3: He has not.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Oh okay, big man. What are the things, the really
- 10:31Speaker 1: specific things that Texas should have done that we have
- 10:33Speaker 1: not done?
- 10:34Speaker 3: Well?
- 10:34Speaker 2: What is Florida doing that Texas hasn't done. There's all
- 10:38Speaker 2: kinds of zoning laws, There's all kinds of prohibitions that
- 10:40Speaker 2: can come out. You've got a city, I mean, what happened?
- 10:44Speaker 3: That city is dead in the water.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Goodness, dead in the water. And there's a good sign.
- 10:49Speaker 2: But I mean, look, I don't think we ought to
- 10:52Speaker 2: just start caving at the argument that Republicans aren't doing enough.
- 10:57Speaker 2: We've got four We've got report four Republicans right now
- 11:01Speaker 2: who are rightfully pointing out this is kind of stupid
- 11:03Speaker 2: that we're going to go again on summer recess instead.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Of you're totally right, but before leaving the Texas Islam thing.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And what Rob Schneider has done is put up these
- 11:12Speaker 1: these stupid posts with with Abbott and Patrick and Paxton
- 11:17Speaker 1: either wearing blinders, with the Saudi flag on it or
- 11:21Speaker 1: wearing full he jabs, And I'm sorry, that's just stupid
- 11:26Speaker 1: and not helpful, especially especially right now when we're ninety
- 11:29Speaker 1: nine days from the midterms. So it's possible to be
- 11:32Speaker 1: right on an issue but be so torque tough and
- 11:34Speaker 1: cranked up to eleven that you're just not helpful. So
- 11:37Speaker 1: if when Rob wants to join us, I will thank
- 11:40Speaker 1: him for Deuce Bigelow and we'll talk a little bit about.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Well, he's using some extreme examples, perhaps to make a point,
- 11:47Speaker 2: But is he wrong when he says your state mark
- 11:51Speaker 2: has Sharia courts, your state has Sharia judges patrol, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: not one of them has been shut down.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Short answer is yes, yes, Okay, he is mischaracter No, yes,
- 12:02Speaker 1: he's wrong. He is a mischaracterized he's mischaracterizing every single
- 12:08Speaker 1: one of those issues.
- 12:09Speaker 2: What it is be does your state have sir Sharia court?
- 12:12Speaker 1: Nothing that has any lasting or any remote effect on
- 12:16Speaker 1: actual law. Yet here's you know what the sharia patrol
- 12:21Speaker 1: thing is. You might have heard this story out of Houston.
- 12:25Speaker 1: An Imam went around and was looking for Muslim shopkeepers
- 12:30Speaker 1: who are like selling lottery tickets. Okay, and when ah
- 12:34Speaker 1: that is you know that is forbidden under Islamic law, which,
- 12:37Speaker 1: by the way, he's right about. And the shopkeeper can
- 12:40Speaker 1: either go, oh, sorry, my bad and stop doing it
- 12:42Speaker 1: or tell the guy to go. You know pound sand
- 12:45Speaker 1: is that a Sharia patrol? The notion of none of
- 12:48Speaker 1: this has any teeth, None of this has had any
- 12:51Speaker 1: impact on Texas law. Yet it is proper to be vigilant.
- 12:54Speaker 1: But this notion that it's already happening and it's rampant
- 12:57Speaker 1: is here's the word. I did it already. It's performative, Mike.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And it is not. It is not helpful. I need sixty.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I need sixty save that you're being defensive of Texas.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You're being defensive of the Republicans you interview on a.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Regular and I am suggest that they're doing nothing, and
- 13:15Speaker 3: it's a shootdown.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Rob Schneider for pointing out that Texans themselves tell me
- 13:19Speaker 2: they are scared. People working in the government of hiet
- 13:23Speaker 2: officials who feel powerless asked me to keep speaking out.
- 13:26Speaker 2: They want they used to act and fear retribution if
- 13:29Speaker 2: they speak act speak out. I think you're making a
- 13:31Speaker 2: mistake going up against guy.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I'll give him credit for things he deserves credit for
- 13:37Speaker 1: I need sixty seconds.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I'm I'm out on Darlene.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I just can't. I just can't. I love her, God
- 13:44Speaker 1: bless her. But with Russell Fry, Ralph Norman is Mark
- 13:48Speaker 1: Sandford in officially, I think he is, that's that's a
- 13:51Speaker 1: multi topic thing. But God blessed Darlene. I grieve for her.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I love it. It's it's it's a crapshoot.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I can't do. I just can't. Mike, Am I wrong?
- 13:59Speaker 3: Am I being unfair to It's up to the voters,
- 14:01Speaker 3: you're not.
- 14:01Speaker 2: And the voters are pushing back against her her candidacy.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I mean the other day she was surrounded by reporters
- 14:07Speaker 2: and she wouldn't answer questions.
- 14:08Speaker 3: And you know, she's playing the grief card. I please,
- 14:11Speaker 3: I'm grieving, you know, and I'm sorry.
- 14:12Speaker 2: And I hate that she's thrust into this, and it's
- 14:15Speaker 2: gotta be Heartbreaking's.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Beat she's thrust into this.
- 14:18Speaker 1: She's the one who decided after ten flip in minutes,
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm not just going to be a placeholder.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I want the full six years.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Well you know what, darling, if you want the full
- 14:27Speaker 1: six years, you need to start answering some quicks.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Got to answer questions. We're gonna have Joey Hudson at
- 14:31Speaker 2: the National Cathedral this week in Washington, DC covering the funeralal.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's going to be a real interesting few weeks what happens.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And look, it's gonna be over soon. They're going to
- 14:40Speaker 2: decide in a couple of weeks in August, so we'll know.
- 14:42Speaker 2: But but you're wrong about Rob Schneider, but you're right
- 14:46Speaker 2: about Darling Graham for.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Once, and all the things I'm right and wrong on.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Later on the day on the podcast, and I'm extra
- 14:55Speaker 1: So we look forward to everybody there, YouTube, Apple, and Spotify.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Have a wonderful happy Monday. My friend,
