- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is Monday, it is the
- 0:1710th of July and I am so glad to have your company as we begin an
- 0:24awfully grand adventure today. Today, not only is it school
- 0:30holidays for those of you who are in that part of life in this
- 0:33part of the world, but it is also the day that we open up a
- 0:39pretty significant new book of the Bible.
- 0:43Today we shall begin journeying through the book of Isaiah.
- 0:50This is the prophet who is most quoted in the New Testament.
- 0:55You'll hear Jesus quote Isaiah. All sorts of New Testament
- 0:59authors quote Isaiah. It is an epic book, epic not
- 1:04only in its size but also in its scope.
- 1:08Isaiah is split into three main parts.
- 1:12The 1st is when he is prophesying, when he's got the
- 1:16Assyrian empire breathing down Israel's neck and they are under
- 1:20threat as this new empire is rising.
- 1:24The second part? Is when they have been taken
- 1:27into exile. And thirdly, there is a third
- 1:30part when they have returned to the land from exile and are
- 1:35rebuilding Jerusalem. And you might be thinking hang
- 1:38on to text Sean that that's like span of over 150 years.
- 1:44True that there is ongoing debate among scholars about.
- 1:49Is this one author who has gathered the writings of Isaiah
- 1:53over time and put it together with other writings?
- 1:56Is it a number of different prophets who have all prophesied
- 2:00together? Is it just different mouthpieces
- 2:02of God writing? Thankfully, we don't need to
- 2:05bother ourselves too much with all that.
- 2:07What we need to know is that this is a prophetic voice
- 2:12speaking God's words to his people both when the threat
- 2:17rises. When they go into exile and then
- 2:20when they return. These prophecies came to a
- 2:23number of different kings through the years and we will
- 2:26talk about them as we reach them.
- 2:28But for now, let us read this introductory chapter that sets
- 2:33the scene for what is to come. Join me friends.
- 2:36Let's go back and hear as we read together Isaiah, chapter
- 2:41one. These are the visions that
- 2:54Isaiah, son of Amos, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
- 2:59He saw these visions during the years when Uziah, Jotham a has,
- 3:03and Hezekiah were kings of Judah.
- 3:08Listen, O heavens, pay attention earth.
- 3:12This is what the Lord says. The children I raised and cared
- 3:16for have rebelled against me. Even an ox knows its owner, and
- 3:20a donkey recognizes its master's care.
- 3:23But Israel doesn't know its master.
- 3:26My people don't recognize my care for them.
- 3:29Oh, what a sinful nation They are loaded down with a burden of
- 3:34guilt. They are evil people, corrupt
- 3:37children who've rejected the Lord.
- 3:40They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs
- 3:44on him. Why do you continue to invite
- 3:47punishment? Must you rebel forever?
- 3:50Your head is injured and your heart is sick.
- 3:53You are battered from head to foot, covered with bruises,
- 3:57welts and infected wounds without any soothing ointments
- 4:01or bandages. Your country lies in ruins and
- 4:04your towns are burned. Foreigners plunder your fields
- 4:08before your eyes and destroy everything they see.
- 4:12Beautiful Jerusalem stands abandoned like a watchman's
- 4:16shelter in a vineyard. Like a lean to in a cucumber
- 4:20field after the harvest. Like a helpless city under
- 4:23siege. If the Lord of Heaven's armies
- 4:27had not spared a few of us, we would have been wiped out like
- 4:31Sodom. Destroyed, like Gomorrah.
- 4:34Listen to the Lord. You, leaders of Sodom, listen to
- 4:38the lore of our God, people of Gomorrah.
- 4:42What makes you think I want all your sacrifices?
- 4:46Says the Lord. I am sick of your burnt
- 4:49offerings of Rams and the fat of fatted cattle.
- 4:53I get no pleasure from the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
- 4:57When you come to worship me, Who asked you to parade through my
- 5:01courts with all your ceremony? Stop bringing me your
- 5:04meaningless gifts. The incense of your offering
- 5:07disgusts me. As for your celebrations of the
- 5:11new moon and the Sabbath and your special days for fasting.
- 5:15They are all sinful and false. I want no more of your pious
- 5:20meetings. I hate your New Moon
- 5:22celebrations and your annual festivals.
- 5:25They are a burden to me. I cannot stand them.
- 5:28When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look that you
- 5:32offer many prayers. I will not listen, for your
- 5:35hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims.
- 5:39Wash yourselves and be clean. Get your sins out of my sight.
- 5:44Give up your evil ways. Learn to do good.
- 5:49Seek justice. Help thee oppressed.
- 5:51Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.
- 5:56Come now, let's settle. This, says the Lord.
- 6:01Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as
- 6:04white as snow. Though they are red like
- 6:07Crimson. I will make them as white as
- 6:10wool. If you will only obey me, you
- 6:14will have plenty to eat. But if you turn away and refuse
- 6:17to listen, you will be devoured by the sword of your enemies.
- 6:22I, the Lord, have spoken. See how Jerusalem, once so
- 6:29faithful, has become a prostitute.
- 6:32Once the home of justice and righteousness, she is now filled
- 6:36with murderers once like pure silver.
- 6:40You have become like worth the slag, once so pure you are now
- 6:46like watered down wine. Your leaders are rebels, the
- 6:50companions of thieves. All of them love bribes and
- 6:54demand payoffs, but they refuse to defend the case of orphans or
- 6:58fight for the rights of widows. Therefore the Lord, the Lord of
- 7:03heaven's armies, the mighty one of Israel, says.
- 7:07I will take revenge on my enemies and pay back my foes.
- 7:12I will raise my fist against you.
- 7:15I will melt you down and skim off your slag.
- 7:19I will remove all your impurities.
- 7:22Then I will give you good judges again and wise counselors like
- 7:27you used to have. Then Jerusalem will again be
- 7:31called the home of justice and the faithful city.
- 7:35The Zion will be restored by justice.
- 7:39Those who repent will be revived by righteousness.
- 7:43But rebels and sinners will be completely destroyed, and those
- 7:47who desert the Lord will be consumed.
- 7:51You will be ashamed of your idol worship in Groves of sacred
- 7:54oaks. You will blush because you
- 7:57worshipped in gardens dedicated to idols.
- 8:01You will be like a great tree with withered leaves, like a
- 8:04garden. Without water, the strongest
- 8:08among you will disappear like straw.
- 8:11Their evil deeds will be the spark that sets it on fire.
- 8:15They and their evil works will burn up together, and no one
- 8:20will be able to put out the fire Our Lord, as we begin this epic
- 8:34journey of Isaiah. As we cover so much ground
- 8:39through the words of this prophet, we will cover your
- 8:45people unfaithful, your people faithful, your people in exile,
- 8:53your people returned and your promises come good, so much
- 8:58ground we will cover. I pray that you shape our hearts
- 9:04that as we hear these words. That we would encounter you.
- 9:09We would encounter your faithfulness, your love for us,
- 9:13your mercy, and the incredible God that you are.
- 9:19So we come before you with hearts, Lift it up full of
- 9:23praise, ready to be shaped and transformed by your word.
- 9:26And we pray. All this in your name, Jesus.
- 9:30Amen.
