- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:03Freedom. It's Tuesday, May 5th, twenty twenty six.
- 0:05Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appears on Uncommon Knowledge to discuss
- 0:10his transformation of Florida’s government and political identity. H.R.
- 0:15McMaster describes the dire state of Iran’s military as tensions remain in the
- 0:20Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. And Michael Auslin writes about some of the
- 0:25peculiar places the original Declaration of Independence was stored and displayed
- 0:30in the past 250 years.
- 0:31Governor Ron DeSantis and the Free State of Florida.
- 0:34Florida Governor Ron DeSantis joins Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson at
- 0:38the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee to explain how Florida transformed from a
- 0:42razor-thin swing state into one of the fastest-growing and most politically
- 0:47distinct states in the country. DeSantis outlines his governing philosophy—pairing
- 0:51conservative policy with a focus on competence—and details the results: rapid
- 0:56population growth, rising revenues without an income tax, debt reduction,
- 1:00and a dramatic political realignment. He reflects on controversial decisions
- 1:04during COVID, his approach to education reform and school choice, and
- 1:08high-profile battles with corporations, universities, and cultural institutions.
- 1:12The discussion also explores broader themes, including the decline of identity
- 1:17politics, the future of the Republican Party, and the enduring relevance of
- 1:21America’s founding principles.
- 1:23Iran’s Military in a ‘Terrible State’.
- 1:25Senior Fellow H.R. McMaster joined CBS Mornings on Tuesday to speak about Iran’s
- 1:30new strategy in the Strait of Hormuz. He says the attacks on shipping by IRGC
- 1:36“fast boats,” which were quickly dispatched by US attack helicopters, are
- 1:40an attempt by the regime to show it can still stop commercial traffic in the
- 1:46Strait. But he says the Iranian regime is closely monitoring US public opinion, and
- 1:51these moves are meant to put pressure on Washington to pare back its demands at
- 1:57the negotiating table concerning Iran’s nuclear enrichment program and missile
- 2:02capabilities. McMaster says “there is a huge chasm” separating news coverage of
- 2:07Iran’s current military capabilities and the reality on the ground, which shows
- 2:12the Iranian military industrial base is largely decimated and the regime cannot
- 2:18muster the kind of massive missile salvos it launched at the start of the war.
- 2:23The People’s Declaration.
- 2:25In an essay for the Liberty Fund’s Online Library of Liberty, Research Fellow
- 2:30Michael Auslin relates the history of the Declaration of Independence as “a
- 2:34physical object.” Today, we take for granted that the Declaration is “an
- 2:39object of near veneration, a ‘People’s Declaration,’” but as Auslin shows, this
- 2:44was not always the case. “Indeed, for long periods, it was either ignored or
- 2:49locked away for preservation purposes,” the historian writes. War, fire, and the
- 2:54ravages of humidity and sunlight all threatened the parchment document between
- 2:59the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. Auslin explains how the
- 3:04Declaration made its way into taverns, homes, and classrooms via reproductions
- 3:09over time—increasing its prominence in the American mind. All the while, the
- 3:14original document endures, faded yet intact. As Auslin concludes, “The
- 3:18physical survival of the fragile parchment intertwines with its enduring
- 3:23philosophy and vision, its ongoing challenge to create a more perfect Union,
- 3:28and a hope that animates not only the American Dream, but aspirations around
- 3:32the globe.”.
- 3:33Germany’s Military Power is on the Rise. This Time It Must Be Firmly Embedded in
- 3:38Europe.
- 3:39In The Guardian, Senior Fellow Timothy Garton Ash writes of the urgent need to
- 3:44ensure Germany’s rising defense spending, soon to equal that of France and Britain
- 3:49combined, means positive outcomes for European continental security. There is a
- 3:54risk the reawakening of the German military industrial complex will do as
- 3:59much to rekindle rivalries within the EU as it will to deter Russia. Garton Ash
- 4:04says the major EU militaries and the UK need to agree to consolidate hardware
- 4:09standards, pointing out that the EU militaries have 174 different pieces of
- 4:14fighting equipment (vehicles and aircraft) between them, while all six
- 4:19branches of the US military together have 33.
- 4:22Will Massachusetts Sour on Religious Freedom?
- 4:24In the Wall Street Journal, Senior Fellow Michael McConnell and John Witty Jr. of
- 4:29Emory University write of an unfolding court case in Massachusetts, where the
- 4:33decision to display two statues of Saint Florian and the Archangel Michael in
- 4:38front of a fire station in Quincy has sparked a legal challenge now before the
- 4:42state’s Supreme Judicial Court. But what makes this case interesting, McConnell
- 4:47and Witty say, is that the plaintiffs are asking judges to use a legal
- 4:51interpretation of state constitutional law that was rejected by the Supreme
- 4:55Court years ago. “It would be extremely strange for the Massachusetts court in
- 4:592026 to embrace for purposes of state constitutional law a standard that failed
- 5:04so miserably at the federal level and has since been abandoned by the US Supreme
- 5:09Court,” McConnell and Witty write.
