- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: This is Can Be music and we have the pleasure of discussing the Ravens defensive effort against the cults and that opening day went tonight, joining me for that, it's Jordan Co. Jordan, how you doing?
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: Good, can.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to see you.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a, it's been a minute.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: Always been too long Jordan.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: I love talking football with you and love getting together and doing other things as well.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: We're just you're in in a pilgrimage of sorts.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: I understand this weekend.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: We won't get into that unless you want to.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, we know you're given.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: I have as folks might remember, given.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I did a podcast for a while together on your website, Canon.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: So we we come to the to Vegas every weekend for week one.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: This is the I think six year and a row that we've done it.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: We had a great time as we did.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: All right, well, I imagine so.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: I remember being in Las Vegas with you for the Ravens overtime loss a few years back of to the to the Raiders and that was no fun.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was that was a bummer.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, the Ravens win the first game of the Jesse midter era here, Lamar Jackson moved the offense effortlessly down the field.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: There were mess up penalties on the offensive line.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_01]: The way they overcame those I thought was remarkable for the most part, or not by most part, but for some part.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: They only ended up losing.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think three drives sold to penalties in the end.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's still terrible, by the way, but it's better than the period like it was going to be.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: And the defense delivered to early turnovers, really dominating yardage and snapcat, of course.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: What were your big takeaways from this game?
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, Ken, I don't know if you remember this, but I was on the boot action Lamar train a long time ago, almost I have a decade ago, and it's come to fruition.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, dare Henry is the perfect compliment to Lamar in that boot action because if they do, and the Coles were crashing that edge defender down hard on Lamar, then Henry's gonna cut it back and he's gonna run for six yards carry.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: And if they don't crash that guy, Lamar is gonna throw the ball for 13 yards a pass.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we saw from this offense.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be really difficult for teams to stop.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: Dave Flowers didn't even play in the second half.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the offense's barely operated in the second half.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: It really felt like they kind of throttled everything down from a schematic and attack perspective because they didn't want to put it on tape, which I'm fine with.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: But the adjustments in the game were great.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll talk about that on the defensive side of the ball, as well.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, you know, it's nice to be in a new era Baltimore Ravens football.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: Tana stuff about Jesse Mentor, we're gonna get out.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's our next section is all about what did we learn about Jesse Mentor?
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll save some of those things for there.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: But there is quite a lot.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: We'll give you that spoiler to start with.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: I thought this is a game where the second area in the past Russian particular complimentary each other very well, you had really good, a really good aggregate pressure rate.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know some people have problems with the way it was generated, I don't.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll get to that in a little bit.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: But beyond that, the secondary played really well.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: And if you look at it on two levels, the first is, how lousy an opportunity set that they give to Daniel Jones, it was quite bad.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then you look at how well did they do relative to the expectation for that opportunity set, it was even a lot better still.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: So very impressive what I thought the Ravens defense put together in the combination of past Russian coverage.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: yeah i i really like i like what they did how they mix it up i mean there were a lot of different looks mean we'll talk about this but i love the eight man front seven man blitz to end the game um you know you know mentor showing that he's got a lot of things in his bag and that he's going to be willing to dip dip in there and and go get them what he needs to and and it's exciting
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how much I, how much portent I draw from the single seven man rush at the end of the game.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: It was nice to see it, you know, a cheap sack out of the situation is nice to kind of rub the cold softens of lines nooses in it a little bit, but yeah, it was, it was one of the things I don't know how often he's going to pull at the seven man rush.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think you need to have those moments, though, right?
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: Where you've got seven guys on the line.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: And if you can take a cheap moment to put on film that you're willing to blitz seven guys, then you're forcing teams to watch that play and watch other Ravens blitz and where the defender was going and prepared for something like this, went up potentially to come up in another game.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I really like about it.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if they, if they don't have a interior system for quality controlling their weightings of how much they should look at, you know, respect that, give it, it was the last play of a 41 to 23 game.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Then yeah, absolutely.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: I, I think that, um, mentor showed throughout the rest of the game what his true colors were with a very Spartan pass rush.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, extremely Spartan by numbers and had a lot of layered scheme to it.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the case is there's four ambulances in this four man before many past rushes and four man past rushes.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'll get a little bit of feedback from you there.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: Just going to kind of give you a word on that right now.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: Um, uh,
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, that was one thing that was very interesting was I thought that the cults ran the ball effectively in this game.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: Taylor ran 19 for 98, he ripped off some big runs but took it in a second half.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: So 5.2 yards per carry and going into the game, I thought this is one way in which the cults can beat the Ravens.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're probably not gonna beat the Ravens through the air with Daniel Jones.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I said a receivers that isn't anything spectacular, particular with piercing, nursing, whatever lower leg injury
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but they hit, but they did have, you know, I thought a real chance to run the ball with that really good offensive line and they just came out fling in the ball and they, they, you know, the drove right down the field, but I think they gave themselves, you know, kind of a false sense of what was going to be successful for most of the game.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and those are the, I mean, I watched a lot of the cults before we watched this game in particular and that what they did is is what we saw a lot of, you know, they'd like the, they'd like the deep and breaking routes like Daniel Jones likes to take the one on one shots when he has them everything else is kind of misdirection and check down and release specials and, and the ravens were on it, you know, mentor has played a game against the cults before.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: So we had a sense of what he was going to get out of that offense and I thought the adjustments were really, really nice on that perspective.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: It was interesting that at the podium after the game that Mentor was basically falling on the sword for the lack of being on the game on the first drive.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know what he meant by that.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: Whether you meant I should have adjusted quicker because he didn't explicitly say it.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: Or we should have game plan better to be ready for A or B or C kind of thing.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: the truth of the matter was, the raven started the game very late and we're going to get into the pat that with the package stuff and they went late all the way.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: They dared.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: They in fact thumbed their noses of the cults to try and get him to run the football and the cults, you know, they really ran the ball 20 times the whole game.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: Now they only had 53 offensive snaps, so it wasn't like they had a ton.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: But that was the thing they did effectively.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: They ran for, you know, Taylor
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Jones only threw for four and a half net yards per play, so when you have that kind of difference, I mean you definitely don't want the additional turnover risk from the passing game.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Jonathan Taylor is good.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: He looks like he's still, he's still got it.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: I know some people think that he might be starting the sunset side of his career and where he is.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: But he had a really nice move that he put on Rokuan in the whole late in the game.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: That was a really nice run.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, his vision is great.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: And they're interior of all their offensive line is great.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: They love to kind of push everybody out of the way and give Taylor a lot of room to cut back and kind of do whatever he needs to do.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we knew it was going to happen.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, five point two, look, it's not the number that you want to have, but it's the new era.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think of what we're seeing in defensive schemes and football, right?
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: This idea of pushing teams to, to want to or, or be pushed into running and, and I think that that the cold kind of,
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: They they kind of called the bet so to speak, right?
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: And they were like, well, we we also know that running is probably not going to be the thing that is going to be an impact game breaker for us.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have to throw anyway, even if the situation or the defense is telling us that we shouldn't.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to we're going to throw our best at your best and and then ours is better and I guess that we're wrong.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I would definitely agree with that.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: The game script was something that the cults really weren't able to deal with when you're running the body.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: You can't really even do it with their canary for an entire game if the other team is effectively moving the football through the air.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: And there are just way too many 50 yard plays given up by the cult's defense for them to win with a effective
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: rushing attack and you know if they had started to do that and the game script is starting to go back to neutral or even negative I think the Raven certainly would have brought up the base defense more in a game like this I really thought they'd play more base though and this is what this tells me the rest of the season is that they only play two snaps of base the entire game okay two okay they played a big nickel 100% of their five defensive back snaps so that's basically of their version of the base defense the base is the new jumbo
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they put base on once to respond to a six offensive lineman, the other time they put it on because the team had the Coltshead first and goal to five yard line.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: So you're going to be packed in any way, go ahead and use your, you know, your safety to cover and maybe a linebacker and you get similar results.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, this is an incredible.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: basically revelation about midter's defenses.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: I thought we'd see less base this year even that last at 9.6%.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think we could see considerably less.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think we might see, you know, 60 or 70 base snaps the whole year if they're only going to play two against Indianapolis.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: Right, against if that's what you're going to get against Jonathan Taylor, then we've got to be seeing that in every, you know, there's not a running back that's going to change that dynamic.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: How many of you see it?
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: What's your over under on base snaps against Cincinnati for the year if they're going to fight right now I mean I think you can safely like eliminating for like goal line and situational type things right like I think it is like
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the Ravens want to use Hawkins and Starks together and they want Kyle Hamilton to be this was Army Knife and move around and be able to do all kinds of different things.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: They're fully committed to it and Kyle Hamilton looked great in that role.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: And he has a great in that role.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this isn't something new that we're seeing from him.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Get him back to the game script and whatnot.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the Ravens had a fairly comfortable lead in the fourth quarter.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: Really.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Why is I guess they got within 15 points at 301 to 16 and then again at what was it would have been 3823 right and but they didn't really ever get any closer than that but I think Ravens fans you know have a little bit of PTSD obviously from from the past few seasons and you know losing some big leads.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: but not what wasn't to happen this this time but they also didn't take any opportunity to remove their starters at some point in the game.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: I thought they might do that.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: We still saw for instance a run from Derrick Henry on that very last drive where you know the game was no longer to adopt but they wanted to get one more first down to kind of put it away.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: Russian Ali time could have been right then.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I also thought it was interesting that we saw, I feel like we saw more of Derek Henry than we have in prior years for the the guy being labeled the old man in the running back room overall.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: They were using him on third downs.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: There was a really nice screen past to him.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we saw them that they didn't seem to shy away from usage.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Ousea really didn't see very many snaps at all.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: So we saw a lot of Humphrey and Wiggins and the
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I like that.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think you, you know, you put, let's put our best players on the field and let them perform.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: Don't.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think that there probably was some some push and maybe even from the team side coming to mentoring.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: I say, hey, we don't want to come out of this game.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: We want to make sure that we close us out.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: Say, flowers.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: looked like he wanted to come back and yeah, but if it was up to him, they flew out of their flowers stood on the sideline for like 30 total minutes of time when he didn't even have a helmet and then we're going to let him back in the game and finally he relented and left the field right.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: So you want to see that from these guys, you want to see the desire.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, and the push in that regard, but I also like the coaching kind of maximizing that and saying, hey, yeah, like let's on third and one third and two third and three, let's put Derek Henry on the field, that's going to maximize our chances is going to make our past game better as well because teams are going to be threatened by the fact that Henry's out there.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's pull it back to the defense south for a minute, because that's what we're supposed to be talking about it.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: They also did not remove the defensive starters at any point.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: We could have seen counter Jackson this game just for perfectly decent time.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the backup corners is a big great time to get.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: Chanda Rivers is not available and Tampa was hurt.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm trying to think of who else they, they even had, they didn't have Elijah Sirot.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: So they were limited in terms of who they could put in offensively and at corner back.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we could have seen Jay Higgins at inside lineback or replacing a broke one at some point.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we sort of could have seen Carl Jones for Simpson.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: There's, there were alternatives they had to make.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: We could have seen Ethan Burke get some snaps.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this was a game that's been perfect for that.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I, I was actually a little surprised he didn't play a little in rotation anyway, but I guess they figured, you know, they, they had the guys who want to.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't get a lot on my green in this game, honestly.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or, or Zion.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, but I think between the two of them, their total staff counts were quite low.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think I saw somewhere that was like 19 and 15 or something, something in that ballpark.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I got that right here.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: Let me just look it up real quickly.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: So Zion young played 12 saps in my green play 17.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, that's, that's nothing.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I could see I guess why they didn't get work in the game, but, but, you know,
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to be harder people to convince.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: It shouldn't be hard to get Hendrickson off the field.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: It shouldn't be hard to get Tavius Robinson off the field.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: And after, you know, they, wow, they really ran up the snap count on Tavius Robinson.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Because he's playing outside the linebacker basically every snap, like 27 out of 30 in the first half.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then they kicked him inside, which was one of the really interesting things by the way.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: And this is maybe one of the things we learned about Jesse Minter, but he seems to have identified
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: the top four man past rush unit they have from what they put on on the longest third down so they put actually Hendrickson and
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: green on the outside with tavius Robinson kicked inside and collious Campbell is the only true defensive lineman in the group.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: And the random bunch of pick plays off that and maybe that's part of what they liked about it, but very surprising to be the tavius Robinson is one of the players in their best for it and very surprised me that frankly the Travis Jones didn't play a more central role in the past Russian this game.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, he might have been tired from all the other work that he was doing.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he killed it.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's for sure.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he even played that many snaps.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Did he play like 29 or something?
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Campbell.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know what?
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see that.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see the snap count total for him.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: If it was that few, what a tremendous game for him because it feels like he was showing up constantly.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's game.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so he had 31.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: He did lead the defensive lineman.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: Campbell had 29.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: Campbell was just getting a lot more of the of the passing down snaps.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: But neither one of that.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's not a overworked number for either of them.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Jones certainly has been a, you know, high percentage player, but also that when that translates and you're playing 68 snaps a game or 70 snaps a game.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: and you play 62% of the snaps, you're playing 44 snaps, 43 snaps, kind of thing, and that's a lot more than he actually played in this game, but he could have been given time off as well, that would have been fine.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: They got a NES Peoples in for 10 snaps in this game, a guy who, by the way, all 10 snaps that he was in for were past snaps, which I think is exactly what they want.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: but it also wasn't completely by plan.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: The first four were over the last six, we're just like one complete stretch of plays late, where I guess it didn't really matter if there was a big run place.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, in the colds, also in the first drive, what they went the first eight or nine plays without running the ball.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was, I mean, a little bit of gamersmanship most likely on their part in that drive in particular, and I think that the Ravens were, and it worked.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, quite frankly, and then they adjusted, but they did throw the ball a lot.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the first drive for a second, because that was something where the interesting thing happening, but it was Josh Downs who was really killing him, maybe, because the Ravens got into two good, third, Downs, a third, and a third, and a third, and a 12, and then they converted both of those with long throws to Josh Downs.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: One of them was for like 25, and the other was for 13, or something, they're both obviously conversions.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: But Downs was one player that I thought they didn't have a great match up against, because he plays in the slot.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: And they're going to have Hamilton opposite him.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: So whatever they need to do, we can shosh towns and these to be some sort of layered system for covering him because Hamilton is not going to stay directly with with with with the Josh Jones Jones and his shiftiness.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: So you have to do it underneath and you know, with with good coverage.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they did have some of that, and we noticed that later in the game that's only a couple drives later, or maybe one drive later, when Rokwan had his intercept, and he was actually the one covering Josh Downs, the play was intended for Treadwell behind him, and he leapt up off his man to make the play on the ball, which boy, nice to see Rokwan back to.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, really nice as he broke one back and, you know, downs the one, the longer of the two first catches, I think, or no, sorry, the shorter the two catches was against, he was lined up against Malachi Starks and just burned him.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, a complete, complete total mismatch.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, that might be one of the things that mentor, you know, was alluding to when he was saying that he was gonna take some responsibility wrapped around that, maybe he felt like there were some things that he thought might work and they clearly didn't work.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: All right, well fair enough, they certainly used down those two, the, by the way, those two catches or conversions has only two catches of the game, he did not, he not catch another ball had four total targets in the game, but, but that was it in terms of success.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: come out of this with obviously some significant health concerns which I guess we have to mention at the top of the show here and then we have to make it not the top of the show because we have a lot of topics to go to cover here but Tampa obviously I think is a pretty serious injury and it sounds like it's a knee injury.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: all that Mentor has been willing to say so far, which is more than he actually needs to say, is that it might be a week to week or it might be more than that kind of thing.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's it.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: The thing, you see, so it might be longer.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: As soon as I hear that, I think there's a chance he might be out, but they're looking around for opinions.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently, the only reason you ever get a second
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, hopefully Tampa obviously stays healthy or it isn't a season ending kind of thing in terms of what I might be and what the Aquaman is but the Ravens I mean I feel comfortable with the Ravens secondary and the depth across the secondary I mean it was a had I think myself five snaps in the game right so we there is depth in terms of kind of who is out there And who is available and and when you are rotating those corners and you've got Martin and Hamilton who can both play in the slot when you need them to
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't feel, you know, it doesn't feel bad yet, but, you know, we're Ravens fans, and we've seen what can happen to a corner peg room and I'll get into season.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it wouldn't be at this point yet that the attrition has got to the point where it's extremely painful, but they have, they do have still Balakone coming back from IR, which is one positive thing to look forward to.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: And they had chandelier rivers who played great during the preseason might only be a slot corner, but might be a guy that could help them on the outside.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_01]: I was interested to see
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was in the last few hours.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: They recindler Darious Webb to the practice squad.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: So they signed in, then they cut him, then they recind him.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: They've already been through the wash.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: But I would have guessed that they would have gone to the Eagles practice squad and offered longer being a spot on the 53 right now.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: Because first of all, they only have to commit to it for three weeks.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: and then Bullockone could be back at that point.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: But during that three weeks, they might need him.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: And at worst, he's a healthy scratch.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_01]: He makes a lot of money when he's with the Ravens, and I mean, the difference in money, by the way, from the practice squad, makes something like 17, 18,000.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_01]: If he's on the game day roster, sorry, if he's on the 53 man roster, not the game day roster, it makes about 50 grand.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: So, big difference for the player in terms of the money that they get for this period and longer being obviously went to the Eagles, I think because he thought the room was a little thinner and he could work there, but this would be a great time to get him back and get him, you know, potentially, you know, and a game like this, he could actually head steps, and we'll see if they play another one over the next few weeks.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, hopefully, you know, like you were saying, we've got some depth there.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: We've got some PTSD over corner back health.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully, most of all, hopefully, it's not anything serious with Tampa because you know, all the reports out of camp where that he was looking fantastic.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he was absurdly ridiculously physical.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: They looked like he fit very well with the defense.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: I was really concerned about him.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: Really probably needing to move to safety because of speed concerns.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_01]: And now I wouldn't say that's necessarily not yet anyway.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I'm really excited about his future.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: I just hope this isn't something that carries some long-term kind of nature to it.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: And any kind of loss of explosiveness or mobility or whatever it would be with an e-endry.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'll tell you what, let's move on, talk about what we learned from Jesse Mitcher and the new defensive coaches in this game.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: And let's just take this kind of one topic at a time.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to lead us down in a specific path.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: So what's something you pulled from this game?
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: You said, you know, I wasn't maybe expecting that or this is kind of a information at whatever it might have.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the use of, you know, Dickwin gave an hour chatting about this after the game, the use of veteran players and situations, like the same like fewer rotations that the top end of
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: the players, the ravens were making sure that they were getting or being on the field.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, who knows if that was game plan, who knows if some of that was like, like, you know, the room or whatever, look, we're shot on Lee should, in my opinion, not be on the field.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, Derek Henry can more, is more than capable of taking on a lot of staffs and a lot of work load.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that was one that really stood out to me that it felt like we weren't.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: The ravens have always historically felt like there's just a super rotational team and under
- 23:15[SPEAKER_00]: They valued that rotation and the rest that potentially came with that and like what they wanted to do with it and and I don't I don't say this as a slight towards I think that was bad, right?
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think there are certainly that you who make a really good argument for why you would want to do that to I like what we saw out of mentor from that perspective in this game
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so one thing we saw was Hendrickson, for example, playing a fair number of steps and a fair number of early down potential runstaps, not that, you know, after a while there were a lot of potential runstaps in this game were a lot of harmful potential runstaps, but they certainly did do some of that.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I don't disagree with you, but I think you're absolutely correct that they they definitely leaned on the veteran players and they leaned on the on the guys out outside linebacker and on the defensive line in particular, Campbell and Jones for a lot of snaps.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't disagree with it at all.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, on the offensive side, it's kind of interesting, but Chris Moore really is the guy who got the alternative.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't try and do something or do much, anyway, he's on the field for a La Jante Wester.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: They did a few things though.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: You could see the head plays, obviously, within the walkthrough playbook they had for this game.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: Within their scripted place for this game, the head plays where flowers was in the backfield.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: We saw a fair number of those, the first half, and whatnot.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: two, three, four plays of that sort.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: And then the second half after flowers was hurt, we actually saw a wester in the back feel that at least once might have been more than once.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought this is interesting because they really are expecting wester to be able to run the flowers playbook out of this, which could be in a lot of things in terms of what route you'd be running down the field.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: Certainly on the underneath stuff, I mean, I think West Wester is like more than capable of any has kind of like that quickness and the shitiness that can that flowers brings and I love seeing I mean the flowers touch down out of the block field was just tremendous right like you're giving space like you're commanding respect on all that stuff.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't your classic.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: Jets, we motion wide receiver run that we've watched 400 times over the last, the start as a flower's career, it feels like that was predictable nearly every time it was happening.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: So really exciting to see kind of some of those new wrinkles.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, this is, I wasn't, I didn't say this because I wasn't surprised by it, but mentor does bring that like,
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: It seems as though there's that new edge coaching mentality around kind of the whole with with baiting teams into the run with kind of player usage with some of those kind of things it seems it seems that he meant the expectations of what what what what I was expecting and I'm very happy with the results that.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, by the way, entirely with you on that, he definitely was a idea you'd run the football coach in this game.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not what the Ravens had with Zach Ward last year.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think it's all Zach Ward's fault.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, they had four news tackles among their five defensive line active for several games this last year.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that was just limits what you could do.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're your hallmark at that point has to be, I will win first and second down because I'm going to be in trouble.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: on 3rd and 4th down.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, you want to be at least effective in what you think you can handle.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_01]: Or didn't, I mean, he wasn't dealt with good hand last year.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he in a lot of ways he, you know, he played his pair of sevens all the way to the river as best he could, you know, given, given, you know, what the, what cards he had.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_00]: but the live in-game adjustments from mentored also showed in this game, you know, obviously, the first drive was a, you know, a shell acting.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: They moved like hot knife through butter right down the field, it looked, it looked just like, if you, if you watch the Cold Strangers game last year, it looked like every snap of defense in that game and clearly mentored came prepared in, obviously, like he coached in that game, that probably has been bothering him.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: like he came in with different things that he wanted to try out.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he wasn't starting to do that right away because he didn't want to tip his hand.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_00]: He wanted to see what the cults were going to do before he started to do some of those things, but the adjustments that followed were the exact ready adjustments.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was happy certainly with the flow of the game and I thought one of the things he did that as long as you're talking about is he leveraged game script quite well.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: They were they were willing to get more and more
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: Luce is the wrong word they did kind of give up a loose touchdown drive at the in the beginning of the fourth quarter that was annoying to me, but but it was it was largely due to do to kind of some off coverage and some willingness to allow underneath rows and basically some willingness to allow the culture on the clock out on themselves.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: But they did a good job in converting to more and more dime as game script allowed.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know that I can really ask more than that.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot more they can do.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: They could have mixed up the past rush maybe a little bit more, but past rush was very effective in aggregate in this game.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I wouldn't put that on.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: I might say, you know, we're going to get to that in a few minutes.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I'm very happy with the adjustments too.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: All right, how about right, pick something different?
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: How about game management in this game?
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because we really did not know who Jesse Minter was as a game manager coming into this.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: And the biggest thing, and obviously, Minter stuff is all in the defense, so I'm putting that in this show, but this one happens to be on offense, that they went forward on fourth and three from the three yard life.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now,
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: If you do a little research on this, you go to the fourth down calculator that's out there online.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's the same one that fuels Ben Baldwin bought.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_01]: Then you're dealing with their model and that's certainly true and there are estimates on there and that even has disclaimers on that and whatnot and who cares, honestly.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: If you check from fourth and three from the three yard line, it is a very slight wind probability advantage to go forward in that situation.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: in going for it.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: By comparison, no, I'm not going to try that comparison because it's so it's so far off, it's not even funny.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: The important thing there is not the four tenths of a percent.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's the four tenths of a percent as the percentage of the difference between the best and the worst outcome in that range.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: So the difference, they're going to win the game 83% of the time, even if they missed
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: And 93% of the time, if they made the first down.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it's really not 0.4%.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's 0.4% out of 10%, which is 4%.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a higher percentage of that amount.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: And by comparison, the cowardly punt that the, from the, I think it was the 30 yard line and they had, they were down two scores and had fourth and one.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: come up with some kind of a leader.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: I could not unbelievable.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to leave they funded in that situation.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: What's so crazy about that is watching the colds chargers game last year, the coats went for like every fourth down that was like less and fourth and fourth and fourth.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like I think they had five either five fourth down conversions or five fourth down attempts.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to remember what the number was that came on like the adjusted broadcast version.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_00]: But they went for it a lot in that game.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: And then when they punted in this game, I just I couldn't
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't a game script question in that game.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't behind and trailing and constantly needing to know they were in the lead the entirety of that game to this that's like it's a bite.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was kind of like this score was embalanced in the way that the ravens were beating the cults and they were so you know I mean and maybe it's just the mentality when when you when you feel like the blood is in the water and everything is working and that's why you're going for it, but yeah, I couldn't believe they didn't I couldn't believe it and go for it.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so my point is not to just bash the cults, but 0.8% out of the 3% or something that was on the online, maybe it was 6%, but 0.8% out of, if it was 8%, would be a 10% difference in, you know, in the chance, but then that range, I mean, you can only affect what you can affect, and so you've got to, you've got to look at that as an enormous coaching opportunity there to not, you know,
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: you're an eight on your own leg, and he did.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_01]: He decided, no, I'll tell you.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't I need to take my pants off to your an eight year.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I've got too far with that analogy.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, yeah, the other thing I really liked about the fourth and three.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the core of I like it.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's not that it was a great play.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_01]: I probably would have liked it.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: If I'd looked into it and really investigated the model and said, oh, that was negative 0.1% that he did.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason is that NFL coaches all fall on a spectrum, right?
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: So some of them are very slightly aggressive.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_01]: But almost, the aggressive coaches, even the most aggressive coaches, they almost never will make a truly bad decision that will cost them things that is aggressive, okay?
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: The almost never go for it is situation where it isn't overwhelming odds to go for it.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: And once in a while, what's it a very long while?
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: Usually in this kind of situation, somebody takes an unnecessary risk that might be a little bit to the too far.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: But I still look at that, I say, okay, if in the range of possible outcomes, I want the guys more aggressive, because generally speaking, that's gonna mean more good decisions, more aggression means more good decisions in general, because there's so much being left on the table currently by NFL coaches, you can't even build
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: a reasonable look back when probability model because you can't, you don't have any data to train your model on.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's no set of decisions from past NFL coaches that is built up to the current mathematical standards of what you ought to be doing.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I guess I don't really want
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: the NFL to become a completely AI-driven league, but man, if AI was running the decision-making process, if they even could simulate a full season for you during the week, in the air conditioning, as you know, Declan Doyle says, you know, you'd realize how incredibly poorly managed these games are from a mathematician standpoint.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: That's, you know, I've said this on a number of, on air and ever times probably more than I should, but you know, if I'll speak for most mathematicians when I say head coaches or policies, when it comes to thinking, game management decisions.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's all, given I have had this conversation as well around kind of like why everybody ends up being so conservative around some of this stuff and I think part of it is also that like the NFL is a bunch of it's an old voice club.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: It still is especially in the coaching scheme of things.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like look at Annie Reed's coaching staff as the qualifiers of coordinator now that he had in 2018, right?
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: Steve's Magnola who was in the Super Bowl against the Ravens in 2000, right?
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: Annie Reed has been around for what feels like forever as well, right?
- 34:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like these guys, like they think that they were trained and they grew up and they were taught.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is the way that you play football and they're not willing to change, like they're not willing to change their mindset on it.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: And that's part of why John Harball
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: That he has a mentality and that's the way he's going to coach and that's what he's going to do and He's not willing to take any criticism around that.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know if you saw the clip I'm in the press room.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is a total tangent, but the clip of the him in the press room where he was just He was basically like don't ask me hard questions because if you ask me hard questions Then it'll be uncomfortable for all of us.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna cut this off and that did that old school mentality that just like it Provades from some of these guys
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: So we're recording this on Monday night.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: Monday morning's episode was actually interview with a clinical psychologist about that interview and one other that our ball gave about why they released various slightly.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: And first of all, in terms of what questions he'll accept, Harbo's completely in the right to basically say, look, I'm not gonna answer any injury questions.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: He can say it differently, but the New York press is a relentless group of bloodhounds.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna ask the questions and they're in a title group of douchebags, frankly.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: And they're just going to keep asking questions until, you know, the coach relance or, you know, they get the coach fired, but yeah, because that, or maybe they kicked out kicked out of the facility, but seriously, they're, they're a relentless group of people and they always have been on that Philadelphia same way, but, you know, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you,
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: You really just, you need to set the ground rules at some point.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the problems, Haribo has brought a lot of these problems on himself because over the years in Baltimore, he should have said, look, that's an injury question.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: Our only comment is no comment.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's the standard M&A answer.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's a standard avoid insider trading scandal issue.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's the obvious thing to say, but when you want to say, yeah, I'm our certified employee, he's going to play something, no doubt about it.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure of it.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's no reasonably, if you won't play on something.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: Then you're giving out asymmetric information and then you're all of a sudden, what you say about somebody, I'm not telling anything about injuries, means he's hurt, he's going to be out for weeks.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to kind of think, so you don't want to give this asymmetric crackle, and a horrible, I should be right on that from the start of his next opportunity here.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: So that part I never problem with, it's the various slate and stuff.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: basically the uh... there were arguments about about wait a minute he said five hundred yards for seven consecutive years or something and the the reporters trying to recite that the yard and stats to hard about the very funny by the way worth a listen anyway
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: All right, and I'm not speaking specifically about him saying that and that I think what he was saying was it was a bad thing just like that just that like old boys club mentality I mean look at the other coaches that he brought what like you've been bring in bright young mathematically challenging mind sets to football and that would be good for especially for fans like us that are predisposed to liking these kind of things it would be good for football and good for the sport.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: And we see a lot of coaches, and it's not just John Harper.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mentioned Andy Reed and his staff and others, right, that we see this kind of pervasively of this old school mentality, if this is how it has to be.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_00]: I love the foredown call.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see more aggression.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: What I rather have three points from Tyler Loop, or what I rather have, Lamar Jackson, the best player in football on the field, right?
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: And that's like even taking out all the model and all the other things that are wrapped around that I want the margin on the field I want our best player the best player in just about every single game that you will play to be the one that has a ball in his hands and to put teams away if that's if that's what it takes
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm certainly with you from an entertainment standpoint.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's more fun to do that.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I have someone who wants to, you know, you, you, you and I have gambled together.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: You understand how I approach risk in life.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, what, this is, I can't turn my mind off to try to analyze the opportunity like that.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to, to, to know that.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: But you're right.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, from a, you know, the person who wants to, to see football played by Lamar Jackson, you want to see more of that instead of kicking any day.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: especially well and look hey Tyler loop great job this week.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was a great job and and I think I hope that the the
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: The Twitter verse takes it easy on it or maybe maybe the whole thing is he needs to be challenged mentally all the time that he's about to lose his job and and things will be good.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, the last kick of the first half felt like mentor was setting him up to take a long kick and basically saying, hey, I won't you need to go out there and do this like.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: The situation situationally in the game is there's not going to be a lot of pressure, but I want to see this happen, but they calls it led right up to it felt like that's what the Ravens wanted to do and it was a challenge that was issued by mentor to his kicker and he wrote to the challenge.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: I liked that mentality as well.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't necessarily like the play calls leading up that led up to it, but it felt like that was the only reason why kind of the sequencing went the way it went.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_01]: I was trying to remember is that Justice Hill didn't he run right up the middle on the play before.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that's the one.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's the second half.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: They had a similar situation.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: But it was a case of they didn't, they wanted to run down the rest of the clock and they didn't want to have the Asteca sac or take a negative play that would take him out of field goal range.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_01]: That might have taken him to 60, 61, 62.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Kick it from 57 and perfectly reasonable test of a,
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: average or above average kicker in this league now, you know, to make a kick like that.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a good, good thing.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_01]: Really nice end of our interaction to the football by the way this week.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_01]: There was a couple of kicks looked like they were drifting right, but generally speaking I thought really good.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk a little bit about packages here, and I'm not going to take very long on this, but there was something about the whole thing is very pervasive and then we can chop it up a little bit.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: Base, a defensive, like two snaps, the entire games.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I told the circumstances earlier, they were in.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: One of them was a sixth offensive line on a field, and the other was first and gold from the five yard line.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: So neither of them were kind of normal circumstances that you might be anywhere on the field playing even on first down.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: Ravens otherwise we're first down every single play was big nickel and And they on dime well that every single play because they put some dime on first down late in the game They play 43% dime in this game is the other thing now
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: It so happens, one other team in Raven's history has played almost at much dime.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's the 2019 Ravens who played 42%.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: The other team that played a lot of dime in Raven's history was the 2000 Ravens.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_01]: Excuse me, who played 34 and a half percent of their staffs was six or seven defensive backs on the field.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_01]: It is a yes.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_01]: Those teams are good.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: It is the idea.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_01]: You have a bunch of big leads and you're able to lean into that dime with game skills.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_01]: You got the point.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's anyway.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a shave and a haircut here thing.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: Really interesting.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_01]: They never even with Josh downs.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: And this is again, I think, you know, if they're going to do this against the coast, they'll do this against anybody.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: Even with Josh downs, a pretty good slot corner on the field with a pretty significant shifting as see these five nine exactly the most difficult kind of match up the Kyle Hamlet and get.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a, it's not a title of war and that's not a tough match up for them at all.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's it's it's it's Josh down who's the top matchup.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to do that against the fricking calls.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: They will do it against anyone.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_01]: They will do it against anyone.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_00]: And and Tyler Warren did he play in this game.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, good point.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like he was he was a race overall from from everything that we saw on the field.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, unbelievable Kyle Hamilton.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_00]: will win a defensive player of the year award at some point in his career if it's not and this year might be the year because the defense is going to be set up and built and ready for it it's new, they're still putting in on tape.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean he had a phenomenal game himself in in this game.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: You all the usual Kyle Hamilton things that were used to seeing we saw in this game.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think we're going to see a lot of this year.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he did incredible imprint on this game as a past rusher and a lot like Hendrickson I mean he was a first pressure guy like Hendrickson in this guy a lot of the other you know quarterback hits and a couple sacks that occurred well a couple one of the sacks was just a free run by starts but the other sack was Hamilton getting into the backfield and chasing him into closing the front there was basically on Daniel Jones and the back door and forcing him into the
- 42:37[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it's not everybody realizes that I love talking football with you Jordan, so they play three different versions of the dime in this game.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be very quickly this because all the nickel was big nickel, but they played 32 dime on one step.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: As a third and 16 step, the Ravens set the F played only 32 dime only very sparsely throughout the last 24 seasons.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_01]: From 2002 to 2025, this was the only step in the first one of this year obviously.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's, it's three down line, and sorry, one down line, and usually two outside linebackers, two inside linebackers.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a really weird special situation case where I think they wanted Simpson on the field as a second inside linebacker to be a little faster to chase down a play that might have been underneath on 3rd to 16th.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't draw any portent on on future usage from that.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would say the same, but it's also great to see them trying to, you know, trends in how to great game in and of itself, you know, end of that sentence.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: But additionally, when you can't get comes back, that spot is justifiably, I think, his to return to.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I think seeing trends in Simpson, in packages and places that they'll be able to use him in the future is a good thing to see as well.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he, he,
- 43:56[SPEAKER_01]: My, I'm of the opinion that Buchanan is going to have to wait for Simpson to screw up to get the job back.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I, I don't, I really, I think Simpson has got it.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's at fourth year player.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens has an organization or incentive to have Simpson have a big year this year for the, for the obvious reasons of.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: you know getting a convict or you know even just deciding whether or not they want to sign him or not you know get get really seeing what he's got over an extended period of place and even extended period is not all the period because you know he's out of there he's out of there for 43% of the snaps when Hamilton is in his spot in the dime so it's not right
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: If you remember the year, the end of the year, he was drafted.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_00]: You and I did the inside linebackers as like a prep for the draft.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: And both of us agreed that he was by far the best inside linebacker.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_00]: And that there was literally no opportunity that we're even sort of going to be able to draft him.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, to the back end.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: OK.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny that we're talking about him now in this situation.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I mean, that'll be interesting to see.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: Because
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: you can't what only have lost the job to to injury and he was playing except you can't it was playing exceptionally well when he got hurt.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think the first seven or eight games he was still kind of adjusting to the NFL and it really did seem to click there towards the end and so that'd be an interesting decision to keep an eye on.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, upward trend.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: And Biggen, I definitely agree with last year.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think Simpson had a decent year last year, no doubt about it.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: And if you take him off the field on third down and you take away some of the potential costly coverage gaps, so you're minimizing the damage you can do to you on a coverage play, then I think you're in really good shape with Simpson.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: And we need to be some good plays against the run, because of the back field, you didn't just miss a pass for us or too much in this game.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: That was a little sad.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_00]: I know that was something that we were going to see more of.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: I would color that in the surprise things.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_00]: It seemed like that was the trend line in that I've been advocating for the last couple years that he could be used more as a pass for sure I know you think.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: that he's too small and it appears the Jesse Mentor agrees with you.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's go to the second thing, which is the rush dime, they put five snaps of that.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mentioned this earlier, but I think the key takeaway from this is Campbell Green Robinson and Hendrix and we're at the line of scrimmage.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: Mentor is effectively saying, that's my best pass rush group.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, first of all, Metabique will come back and I assume Robinson will be out
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: of that group that, that it will be basically taking Robinson's spot, but the second thing is that I don't know why it wouldn't be Travis Jones right now because after the year he had last year, Travis Jones, if you play him at three, he's an individual monster match winner and Campbell appears to be able to play anywhere, you know, along that line, Campbell was a pick master in this last game.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_01]: He only had one pressure himself, but he set
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of wondered if some of this was based on the fact, maybe the Tavius has been more adaptable to a lot of the games whose Tavius, every single one of his quarterback hits was set up.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: Not one of them was a straight up, I'll go get the quarterback on their own.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: Every single one, free rush generated by Kyle Hamilton taking the right tackle on to his right.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he had a two stunts I believe and then he had one other that was in generated one as well and I'm forgetting exactly how it was developed.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_01]: But all four of those, now the other one is he was unblocked and Hamilton pushed the guy into his into his lap.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's gun the sack.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I'm trying to think in my mind how Jessie Mitter has come to the conclusion that yeah, these are my best four past rushers, even now on this team.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, he does have my green out there.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's true, but why not, you know, why not Travis Jones?
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know, positive, I guess you can even come to the conclusion why not a NES peobles if you're talking about an inside guy you're going to play.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 47:47[SPEAKER_00]: The stunts and picks are clearly going to be a thing and a priority for what the Ravens want to do in terms of their past rush, and maybe he just thinks that he's the best fit for that right now.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_00]: Nombie is a great, he will fit him swimmingly into that same pick and all the stunts and the things that they want to run.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: Thinking about what that could look like with Nombie and switching in for Robinson as the fourth guy with these guys rushing the passer is pretty exciting to think about.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it's exciting and I hope nobby comes back and he's the player we got I will admit that right now I am still tempering my expectations on exactly who nobby has just been a long time since the that man has played football on the better part of one year might have been a year in a few days from now and and and you know I think.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: This could be the last game they have to be without him.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_01]: It could be week three if they're if they were truly setting the roster by the rules they seem to use, meaning they expected him back before week four, which was the term that the cost to use on September 2nd, then he and Duke Cannon should both be back by week three.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: If not, then there's good reasons why they probably should have both started the year on IR, even if they had to manufacture a handshake deal to do it.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's move on and talk about the past rush a little bit because I do want to spend a few minutes on this.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_01]: Opportunity set was probably one of the coolest things because I've never the opportunities have never seen an opportunity set like this in any NFL game.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: Normally, when one side is getting a lot of pressure, relative to the ample time space opportunities, the losing side, which means, in this case, the offensive side, would create more ball out quicks by scheme.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, and they would go to throwing the ball out quickly by scheme.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_01]: Well, this game, 33 total plays be ended with a pass or sack.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_01]: 12 of those were ATS.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: Three of them were ball out quick, and 18 of them were pressure.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: That's 55% pressure, and only 36% ATSA, and obviously a three to two margin they're 18 to 12.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: That should have been unacceptable to the calls, and I would have thought they'd have Daniel Jones getting the ball out of his hand more quickly.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so having what I saw in film from the colds before is that their quick stuff is like pretty predictable, like they're so I think the mentor was able to cover up those spots and had a good feel for where he thought those things were going to be.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: We saw the ravens all over the quick throws that they did happen.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: They were there were quick tackles that were quick to the ball.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: There was one on the first drive that I think that that wasn't as good.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: And they also weren't generating pressure yet.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: But I think mentor had an answer for what those things are.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: Everything else they're close like to do are honestly very, like much more longer developing in terms of what they want.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: They want to get a receiver that's going to get down the fields there in 101.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: They like the deep and breaking routes.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: We saw some of that in this game where that when they did find success, kind of in that kind of two-thirds spot in the defense, whatever it is.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: They also like to like chip and like kind of hide, Warren and then move him in motion or like,
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: have him released to the back side or have guys that are releasing that look like their past blockers and trying to take advantage of some of those things.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_00]: And so if you cover up, if you can quickly cover up kind of some of those opportunity sets and if you can spook Jones off of throwing the deep one on one ball, all of a sudden you just like you take the amount of choices that he has completely away from him and he's just not that talented of a quarterback to kind of be able to overcome it at that.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's a really good point and and one of the things when you rush for regularly you have options in terms of taking away clean easy reads for the quarterback and you said they're they're offensive pretty predictable and have to get them all the well of course it's super predictable just watch title huntley play football and you know how collapsed that field becomes in terms of
- 51:37[SPEAKER_01]: where the ball could go, and they have to scheme the ball out quickly, because he doesn't have great pocket awareness, so they have to do that.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_01]: And a hot reads by their nature, they have to, if you have to get rid of the ball quickly, there's only so far that the receiver can get during that period of time that you can throw the ball.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, you don't have a lot of choice.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: You're 100% correct.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: And the fact that mincer is dropping seven into coverage means he can drop even, say, a defensive lineman who's aware of a potential passing lane.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then we saw that with broader
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: And she's held it up to the end of the football.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_00]: That was a great.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, David, I'd love that play.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: What happened in the moment.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_00]: Shades of the Michael Pierce interception that will live for me.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: What a great play that was.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, and it's also, it was good to see Washington have the awareness and those situations.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you can't really attribute this to like prior coaching or any of the players individually like these guys aren't dropping into space very often and then it's not there is not their skills That but it was great to see him have the awareness to kind of be in the right place it did seem like he was kind of like going to the right place and not just like being in that spot I think like Ty's Bowser is a guy that early in his career it felt like when he was playing in his own he went to like the spot they told him to go and that's where he went and
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: And as his career developed, he started to understand the concepts better.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_00]: He knew where he needed to be within that space and what that was.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_00]: We saw a little bit more like that from Washington and that circumstance.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then you can drop defensive linemen.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: If you've got guys that are willing to do something like that, it does add a really quality layer to the defense.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: And most of what you're trying to do is just make a more difficult up and down throw for that quarterback by having that guy there.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: So that's a lot of times that's all you can do with that player.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: He could give you a little bit of pursuit maybe to try and run down a player to make a tackle and you know if somebody gets past the line of scrimmage, but he's not going to do a lot for you.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: And but the Ravens certainly got free skimmed up.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: all through this game.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that was a big part of the 55% pressure rate.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: But now what to tell you about?
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: The opportunity said in how the colds did relative to it.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to break it down for you in pieces.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: So April time space 12 plays 103 yards 8.6 yards per play one turnover by the way that with the ETS that's when they threw the interception that
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: 8.6 yards per play, my standard for ATS is 8.5 yards per play.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_01]: So they were one yard above the expectation on those 12 throws.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so certainly the meeting expectation is okay, the meeting expectation against the Ravens defense might even be good, but nothing special.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, ball out quick, they don't hit three play.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_01]: So as you're doing it very small, number is 24 yards, 8.0 yards per play.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: The standard is six yards per play on ball out quick throws.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm giving you these numbers right now because I'll be using in the whole season at eight and a half, six and three and a half for the for the three levels of pressure on the play.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that was six yards above expectation.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: So two yards per throw better times three, six yards above expectation.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_01]: with pressure and this is where it was really fricking cool.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: 18 plays, 55% of the time, the total yardage that the Coltscot on this place was 22 net yards.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_01]: 1.2 yards per play, 2 sacks, 1 turn over, 41 yards below expectation, which obviously was most of the 34 yards below expectation.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_01]: They were in total.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: And you'll look at around 34 units, it doesn't seem like that much.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's enormous within the context.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_01]: They gave them a lousy opportunity set to start with.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's a lot of the defense about a one right there.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: But then after they gave them that lousy opportunity set, the coverage, you know,
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: further, you know, and not only just the coverage with the past rush as well, within the, you know, maybe various shades of gray of a pressure, gave a really great effort in this game that held the, the, the, the cults to even fewer yards than they would have expected there.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, right, like I think that the context of saying, creating that much pressure and deflating the expectation of the yards per catch or, you know, where yards per play in those circumstances is the main when it right, like you've already done that as the baseline and then you exceeded that, like to exceed any set by opportunity said that the baseline is for 18 plays three yards a play and then to drop 40 plus yards below that is pretty tremendous.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_01]: I thought so.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_01]: If every throw was ballad quick in this game, which might be a normal kind of an opportunity set the about equal ATS and pressure actually probably should you're going to suffer a little more pressure than ATS in a typical game, but if it if it was six yards per play of expectation, they would add 198 yards of expectation and that would have been.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: significantly more than they actually had.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually not looking at it right.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's 151 might have been, but anyway, very significant difference in both elements that they won by.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_01]: And just another example of how the past rush and the coverage really worked together to win this game for the rapids.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, one more number here for you.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: Mentor used only seven rushes.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: We had five plus going.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: So it's 21% rushes.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_01]: And first of all, it's that number is buoyed by that last, totally flagrant seven man rush, which is the only one the entire game with more than five.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't have any sixes.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_01]: They ran, they had six-fives, and they won seven.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: The Colts gained minus 11 net yards on those plays.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_01]: Minus 1.6 yards per play on these seven rushes of five plus.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, they were doing fine with four, and they worked that out very well with their coverage, but when they rushed five plus, they were, they were devastating in terms of what they presented, included both of their sacks on five plus rushes.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the anti-opposive Wing Martendale effect where if you're constantly blitzing people then they're constantly expecting it and they're setting their play calls up to attack it.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: You got to scale that back to a degree.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_00]: I loved Wing Martendale.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was just too much all the time.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_00]: leaving guys on islands constantly, et cetera, right?
- 57:46[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor, I think, and this numbers show you, this is the perfect balance, right?
- 57:51[SPEAKER_00]: Or this is the kind of balance that you should be wanting.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, you need to be able to generate pressure with four.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_00]: They did that already to begin with.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then you're forcing teams to then call their plays, like you're going to get pressure against the foreman rush, and then occasionally bringing the fifth person at the right time and the right opportunity set.
- 58:08[SPEAKER_00]: And so you're really, you know what I like about it is that, you know,
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: Football is a very cerebral game, for all the stigmatized versions of kind of brutish, which it is brutal sport, right, in terms of what it asks of the human body.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_00]: But the speed, the processing, the preparation, all of those things that have to go into those, and then be essentially processed out in 35 seconds, plus whatever play time bouts are, in terms of seeing those things be completed.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_00]: You have to be able to mix in these elements and have surprise effect to make all of it to make all the pieces more effective overall.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: So you're still, so you can't only rush for the entire time either, right?
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: Even if that is not what we meant or wants to do, you're still in need to send those blitzes from time to time.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_00]: You need them to be good blitzes too.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: You need them to get home.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_00]: Every time you send one, I feel like, you know, there have been coordinators in Ravens history that it felt like at times we were rushing five or six, and we were just running straight into the other, like into the blockers and not generating pressure as well, right?
- 59:10[SPEAKER_00]: So they have to be skimmed up correctly.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_00]: This feels like this game felt like it was the right balance, and that from like a chess perspective, so to speak, the Ravens definitely kind of outthought or outsmart of the cult here.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they layered on tons of deception in this game.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want to get to that in just one second.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_01]: But when we go back to something you said first, because there's a lot of old-time things that are said about football that are complete fucking portion.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: But one of the things, one of the very true things that's said about defense is there's no better way to play defensive football.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's no better foundation for a great defense than having a great four-man pass rush.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_01]: The really is, there's no substitute for it.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_01]: And the only substitute, you can kind of manufacture, the only like replicative product you can create here is to have a four-man pass rush which gets there via scheme.
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what mentor has and what's some other good teams have to, but that's what mentor has in particular.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_01]: And you don't have to do it with absolutely the top guys at every single position, but you have to have great scheme.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_01]: and I think the ravens have done a great job in assembling a coaching staff that can bring that home, hopefully with power, you know, the outside linebackers coaching and with, um, and with mentor, you know, Dr.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: Rush had a definitely a great reputation for trying to improve the past trust characteristics of some of the people, of some some of his players, but I think that that's not exactly what the ravens need right now.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think there are enough below the line in terms of their outside linebacker group that they really have to have to be cognizant of needy to do a
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I totally agree.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's the future honestly.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the future of NFL football.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think that if you look at the salary cap and what that does, you want to quarterback you and one eye high in Russia.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_00]: But you're not, you just aren't going to be able to have kind of like the old giants front for, right?
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, you look at that.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, those guys are going to be really good.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be dominating dominant.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's not as hard to call it.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_00]: Defense.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_00]: behind those four guys because they were so good, right?
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_00]: But I just think in the salary cap era, you either just have to have a sequence of really good drafts where you're hitting on everything and one thing other fans do is they expect every draft pick to hit.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_00]: And they're like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this third round picked it and working.
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, actually like, most of them don't.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_00]: Once you get to the third round, like our half of them in the second round, don't even have a meaningful impact in the league ever.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so you have to have those expectations in the balance.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I think as you see more of these young, we first saw it with the young smart offensive coordinators working their way in.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then that became kind of all the rage.
- 1:01:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Mike McDaniel, for example, for the chargers and their little loss, the chargers offense looked lost, it looked completely lost.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_00]: And so, like, there's a balance to being to gimmicky around some of those things, I think, as well.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I think we're going to see this wave of young defensive coordinators, like Mike Mcdonald and, like Jesse Mentor, that are going to, teams are going to want to emulate this.
- 1:02:08[SPEAKER_00]: And whether it's guys out of their coaching trees or guys that can do, create foreman rushes that aren't with the traditional
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'll always great talking football if you'll tell you what we'll come back and we'll talk about a little bit of the scheme that that make mentor sprinkled in and in part two of the show, but it is just an utter pleasure always to talk football with you Jordan.
