- 3:07>> Okay, boys. When you order out, when you
- 3:09when you go through a drive-thru, you
- 3:10have to have a name. Can't be yours
- 3:12because one somebody remembers. I'm
- 3:14Priscilla.
- 3:16>> Every time I go, I am Priscilla. And
- 3:19I'll tell you, I go to the same
- 3:20Chick-fil-A's for for breakfast because
- 3:22Chick-fil-A does a great job. They're
- 3:23the best breakfast.
- 3:25>> And now all I have I'm ordering it
- 3:28through the drive-thru. Priscilla. Yeah.
- 3:31Everybody. Then I get I get back there
- 3:32to serve. Priscilla, how are you today?
- 3:34It takes everybody off off count. But
- 3:37I'll do it better. When you're ordering,
- 3:39order in a girl's voice as best you can.
- 3:41Like I mean, you start Marge Simpson
- 3:43smoking.
- 3:44>> Give us
- 3:45Patty and S. I want to hear.
- 3:47>> I can't right now because my voice is
- 3:49I'm I'm I'm suffering on the uh I had
- 3:51too much. Uh
- 3:52>> Hi, Priscilla in your throat.
- 3:54>> Welcome to Chick-fil-A. What can I What
- 3:56can you order?
- 3:56>> Can I tell
- 3:57>> I would like I would like to order the
- 3:58um the the uh Hold on. I got to get this
- 4:02out.
- 4:04>> I'd like to order the uh uh the the
- 4:07biscuit and chicken, cheese, and egg and
- 4:10two eggs and two extra uh breakfast
- 4:13fillets, please. Uh what's your name?
- 4:15It's Priscilla.
- 4:20>> You're scaring all those children for a
- 4:22second.
- 4:22>> They're all young kids
- 4:23>> for a second just for fun without
- 4:25getting carried away.
- 4:28Picture Twister dressed up as a woman
- 4:30trying to come through.
- 4:33>> Hold on.
- 4:34>> Those big hands.
- 4:36>> I've done that.
- 4:36>> You wouldn't be a good looking woman.
- 4:38No, you're a good-look man. But you are
- 4:41not a good-look man. None of us would
- 4:42be. That makes me look like an old
- 4:44woman, but I got the hair. So, I'll do
- 4:45that order and I'll go up to the to the
- 4:47drive-thru and I'll put the mask on and
- 4:49they'll go, "Uh, this is Priscilla. Do
- 4:52you have my" And they'll be looking at
- 4:53me like, "Now, understand that if you go
- 4:56to the same place for, you know,
- 4:57whatever, you become a there's the
- 4:59story. It's like steak. You got to put
- 5:01yourself out there."
- 5:02>> So, I went to a Chick-fil-A one time
- 5:06with all my kids in the vehicle, and
- 5:08they dared me that I wouldn't go through
- 5:10the drive-thru backwards. I drove the
- 5:12drive-thru backwards. They were freaking
- 5:14out. I pull up and the guy I'm like
- 5:16this. The guy's handed the food through
- 5:18the passenger side. This my kids were
- 5:20dying laughing.
- 5:21>> What do you Wait, wait, wait, wait,
- 5:22wait. You went backward like just
- 5:25reverse the whole
- 5:26>> drove reverse all the way through the
- 5:27back
- 5:28>> which is like tight corners.
- 5:30>> It was good driving. Kids love it. And
- 5:32then and I also got dared by my kids a
- 5:35lot of times uh to sing the McDonald's
- 5:37the the Big Mac song when I ordered my
- 5:40Big Mac. So, I pull up to the the
- 5:42drive-thru and I'd be like, "Can I get
- 5:43two all beef patty special sauce out of
- 5:45cheese, pickles, onion on a sesame seed
- 5:47bun?
- 5:49>> They love it." And my kids are losing
- 5:51their mind. And they're like, "What?" I
- 5:53said, "Two all beef patty special sauce
- 5:55of cheese, pickles, onion on a sesame
- 5:56seed bun." They're like, "Sir, what
- 5:58would you like?" I said, "I'm telling
- 6:00you what I want. IT'S YOUR COMMERCIAL.
- 6:02YOU ALL BE PATTY SAUCE PICKLES ON A
- 6:06STARVING NOW. Patty's
- 6:07>> [ __ ] it. I JUST WANT
- 6:09>> STARVING.
- 6:10>> I want a Mc gang bang.
- 6:13>> Yeah, that was odd. I don't know. I
- 6:15still don't get that one. The gang bang
- 6:16burger. I'll eat it. I'm going to try
- 6:18it.
- 6:19>> I'm sure you
- 6:22>> There's a couple nights where I Yeah,
- 6:23you get a little sauced up.
- 6:26>> It was a McDonald's there one night and
- 6:28uh I'm walking that night back to the
- 6:31hotel, whatever. I'm like, I'm [ __ ]
- 6:33hungry. The door's locked, but they're
- 6:36doing the drive-thru. So I get in line
- 6:38standing up like no car. I'm walking
- 6:42behind the car. There's a car behind me.
- 6:44They're like, "What the hell?" So I get
- 6:45up to the little speaker thing and I
- 6:48order my food. And they're like, "Okay,
- 6:49great." You know, then I get up to the
- 6:50window like, "Oh, no, no, this is a
- 6:52drive-thru." I go, "Well, I don't have a
- 6:54car." She go, they go, "Well, you can't
- 6:57order." I'm like, "How ridiculous is
- 6:59this?" I'm like, "I already got money."
- 7:01>> I go, "Yeah, I got money. They wouldn't
- 7:04serve me." So I go, "Okay, no problem."
- 7:06So, I walk back. There's a car that's
- 7:08pulling up to the speaker. I'm like,
- 7:09>> "Can I get in?
- 7:10>> Can I get in your car?"
- 7:13>> I'll buy your meal. I'LL BUY YOUR FOOD
- 7:15IF YOU LET ME GO.
- 7:17I GO, "I'll pay for whatever you buy." I
- 7:19go, "I'll just sit in the back seat and
- 7:21we pull up, just roll my window out."
- 7:23So, I do the same order. We go THROUGH
- 7:24AGAIN THE SAME LIKE GOT A CAR NOW.
- 7:29>> I UH
- 7:30>> That's good.
- 7:30>> I was in Nashville one time.
- 7:33>> And I went to uh
- 7:34>> That's a good one, dude. I went to
- 7:35McDonald's with another player. I I
- 7:37don't know if I want to mention his
- 7:38name, but uh we went to McDonald's late
- 7:40at night and I ordered just [ __ ] huge
- 7:42soda and the cabbie was not happy with
- 7:45us. We're little loud.
- 7:49The last thing he wants to do is go to
- 7:51[ __ ] McDonald's and I'm like figuring
- 7:52out what to order. We drive away
- 7:55>> and he hits a bump and I the soda goes
- 7:58everywhere. Boom.
- 8:00>> Guy pulls over, takes a gun out. Get the
- 8:03[ __ ] out of here. Are you kidding me?
- 8:05No. I go, "Oh, Nashville." And we gave
- 8:08him a couple hundred bucks, got out, got
- 8:10another cab, went back, fought McGraten
- 8:11the next day.
- 8:12>> [ __ ]
- 8:13>> I would tell you one story that if
- 8:15you're back in the Quebec days,
- 8:18>> now this was back when in the '9s when
- 8:21Quebec was trying to separate from
- 8:23Canada.
- 8:23>> Yeah.
- 8:24>> So, anybody who was English that was in
- 8:27Quebec, we got treated like dog poop.
- 8:29>> Yeah. Well, after a game, Max's wife Jos
- 8:32and I are hungry, going to go through a
- 8:34drive-thru. So, I'm trying to I'm
- 8:36ordering and I can eat and she's and
- 8:38she's drunk and she's getting a little
- 8:40pissy and I'm ordering in French and
- 8:43then she's then she's chiming in and
- 8:45this lady on the other side is starting
- 8:46to be rude. Now, it's 2:00 in the
- 8:48morning, right? And so Jo decides to go
- 8:51on a tirade and I go, "Now the order's
- 8:54done." I go, "Well, I'm not eating."
- 8:56>> Yeah.
- 8:56>> And she goes, "What do you mean?" I go,
- 8:58"You just you're English number one.
- 9:00We're in a and so I'm not eating." She
- 9:02goes, "I'm starving." We get up. Do we
- 9:04get the food?
- 9:05>> And I She goes, "You want?" I said,
- 9:07"Absolutely not." I said, "I would check
- 9:08yours." And she she took a bite.
- 9:11Cigarettes, cigarette butts, and God
- 9:14knows what else. She goes, "Let's go
- 9:16turn around." I go, "Not a chance.
- 9:18>> You probably want to go in and
- 9:21I'm not First of all, I'm not unleashing
- 9:22you over there. I'm not doing that. And
- 9:24second of all, you're not going to
- 9:25achieve anything but us going to jail.
- 9:27>> Yes.
- 9:28>> So always be nice
- 9:31after you get your food.
- 9:34>> And don't be afraid to tip when you're
- 9:36going through the drive-thru.
- 9:37>> Are they still separate?
- 9:39>> Do you tip? You tip on drive-thrus?
- 9:41>> Can I tell you for sure?
- 9:43>> Okay.
- 9:44>> Yeah, you No, you're right. You did, but
- 9:46I wanted a question.
- 9:47>> If you GO TO THE CURIOUS CAR,
- 9:50>> go ahead. If you go to the bar and you
- 9:52ask a good-looking girl how much a beer
- 9:54is, you know what she's going to say? I
- 9:56don't know. Because she doesn't buy it.
- 9:58But if you ask a girl that's not a a
- 10:00greatlook, but personable how much is a
- 10:03beer, she'll tell you how much it is
- 10:04with tax because she appreciates when
- 10:06you buy one. Same thing goes when you're
- 10:09at going through a drive-thru. Just
- 10:10because you're going through a
- 10:11drive-thru, these people are serving
- 10:13even through COVID and everything else.
- 10:15These people kept their jobs and serving
- 10:16us. Why not give them a tip?
- 10:18>> You give a Do you do it on your card?
- 10:19Because I feel like they just take not
- 10:21cash. Always cash. But you can't have
- 10:23cash because you're on the car. You're
- 10:26not guaranteed to get it.
- 10:27>> Well, there's no tips.
- 10:28>> There's no tips. You always got to cash
- 10:30>> cuz Subway and everything does, man. 20%
- 10:3220%. They do that now. That happened
- 10:34after
- 10:36drive in and hit the tap the machine.
- 10:38>> Yeah.
- 10:38>> Let me ask you this. You go,
- 10:39>> not drive in. Walk in.
- 10:40>> Well, you don't drive your car in drive
- 10:42your car into subway.
- 10:43>> You go you go into a coffee shop. I
- 10:46won't name the name, but it's a very
- 10:47popular Starbucks. Starbucks
- 10:50going to Starbucks. I don't want to lose
- 10:51a sponsor, Loy. So,
- 10:53>> we don't have any [ __ ] sponsors.
- 10:55>> I know, but we won't get it if we just
- 10:58listen to J. He's been spas anymore and
- 11:00they're massive
- 11:02spas.
- 11:03>> So,
- 11:05>> you go to the counter, you order not
- 11:07every Starbucks like I just order the
- 11:09pike. Like just the the the order.
- 11:12>> No, no, that's later. The pike at first
- 11:16>> it's the basic coffee. Well, sometimes
- 11:18these locations just hand you a cup and
- 11:20it's over on the thing and then they
- 11:22turn the [ __ ] thing around. They want
- 11:23to tip. I'm like, why the [ __ ] would
- 11:24like I'm not cheap. You guys know me.
- 11:26I'm not, you know. You know, like guys
- 11:27who play
- 11:28>> Yeah, that you you got rid of the steam
- 11:30earlier.
- 11:31>> The what?
- 11:31>> Jamie Riverstein.
- 11:32>> Oh, goodness gracious.
- 11:34>> I thought you said like Alex STE. I'M
- 11:36LIKE, DON'T BRING that guy up.
- 11:38>> When they machine around to you and it's
- 11:40the tipping thing, what do they say? Cuz
- 11:42I've heard some
- 11:43>> say, oh, there's just it's going to ask
- 11:44you a couple of questions.
- 11:45>> Yes. Yes.
- 11:46>> No, it's not. No, it's extorting me.
- 11:48>> Exactly.
- 11:50>> I know.
- 11:51>> But I'm not cheap. But I sit there and I
- 11:54go,
- 11:54>> "You handed me an empty cup. I'm going
- 11:56to pour my own coffee
- 11:59>> and I'm punch like I'm doing the I'm
- 12:01doing just as much as you did.
- 12:03>> Do you tip?"
- 12:05>> I I do anyways. I feel like I feel like
- 12:07an [ __ ]
- 12:08>> My latte, I'm tipping.
- 12:09>> Yeah, but if they hand you a cup and you
- 12:11got to go make your own.
- 12:11>> Hey, I'll tell you this right now. If
- 12:13you own a coffee shop on Manchester
- 12:15Road, those places are jam-packed every
- 12:19[ __ ] second. I don't even, Dude, I
- 12:22make my own, man.
- 12:22>> Because my daughter, my youngest,
- 12:24McKennon, she will sit in line at a
- 12:27Starbucks or a seven brew.
- 12:30>> 15 20 minutes in line. I'm like,
- 12:32>> and 15 bucks.
- 12:33>> Yeah. Oh, easily.
- 12:34>> I'm like, why would you wait in line for
- 12:36a car? I see the Starbucks on the rivers
- 12:38is like 12 cars deep.
- 12:41>> A mile long. the and they're everywhere.
- 12:43It's the weirdest thing. They're popped
- 12:45up everywhere.
- 12:46>> Get a coffee.
- 12:47>> Go to QT. And I like to make my own. Get
- 12:49a good espresso machine.
- 12:51>> Yep. I got one.
- 12:52>> Cuz I coffee is kind of not strong
- 12:53enough for me. I need espresso.
- 12:55>> I hear you. You were talking about the
- 12:57tip, you know, turning the coffee
- 12:59around. So, what are your boys opinions
- 13:01when See, I'm getting a check from
- 13:02Deerbergs and Shnooks and they send it
- 13:05to me like every every week I get paid
- 13:07because I'm I'm I'm buying my own
- 13:09groceries. cuz I'm running it through
- 13:10the scanner and I'm getting paid for
- 13:12that.
- 13:13>> You guys not getting paid?
- 13:14>> No, you're not getting paid.
- 13:15>> Oh, okay. I'm just checking that.
- 13:17>> You're right, though.
- 13:18>> That's a whole different story, though.
- 13:19>> Walmart is like 30
- 13:22points or what?
- 13:24>> I'm just talking They're letting me
- 13:25check out.
- 13:26>> I listen, I got like $250 in Shnook's
- 13:28bucks. Like, it's unbelievable. I spend
- 13:30>> That's a good feeling week.
- 13:33>> THAT'S GOOD. That's a good feeling when
- 13:35you have that just like racked up. loves
- 13:37my boys for free today.
- 13:39>> I spend so much money on food. I spend
- 13:42so much money on food just to like cook.
- 13:44>> Steak at my house like every sing.
- 13:48>> Oh yeah. We only have kids and I spend
- 13:52just even like I did a seafood boil last
- 13:54weekend. 200 bucks easy.
- 13:55>> Saw that. You're all
- 13:56>> God. I love it because
- 14:00Kate's got to eat.
- 14:01>> Kate's like what?
- 14:01>> Kate's got to eat.
- 14:02>> Lobster tails. She's so disgusted by She
- 14:05should be overweight, but because of how
- 14:08I eat
- 14:08>> with her hands in there, she just
- 14:09doesn't. She might weigh 100 pounds.
- 14:11>> She only weighs Yeah, she's 100. And I'm
- 14:13a a grotesque mutant.
- 14:15>> Get yourself some bare knucklebcue. bare
- 14:18knuckle-b.com.
- 14:21If you haven't got some, get yourself
- 14:23some.
- 14:25Throughout your career, what was a past
- 14:29player or one that you played with that
- 14:32gave you the best information that you
- 14:35traveled through your career with that
- 14:36you held on tightly and and and I'll
- 14:39predicate it to this. Maybe you just did
- 14:42that or whatever was lent to you out of
- 14:44blind faith and then realized years
- 14:47later, "Holy [ __ ] this is this is why I
- 14:50was told this. This is why this
- 14:52individual said to me and you're blind
- 14:54faith following and you realized at the
- 14:56end of your career or midway through
- 14:58going, man, I wonder what else that
- 15:00person said that I didn't catch." Al
- 15:03Tour was my coach in the Western League
- 15:05as a 19 and a 20-year-old. And he told
- 15:08me um that these were my money makers
- 15:12and that I was going to that I was a
- 15:14tough kid and that as long as I kept
- 15:15working on my skill that I needed to
- 15:17protect these. So never get in a street
- 15:19fight or a bar fight because don't ever
- 15:21waste something that like these things
- 15:23on somebody that's not helping you cash
- 15:25a paycheck. So I've never been in a
- 15:26street fight or a bar fight. When I was
- 15:28first in St. Louis, I'd have guys coming
- 15:30up to me all the time and I'd be like,
- 15:31"Hey, uh, you know, I'm kind of a [ __ ]
- 15:34off skates, so what if I buy you and
- 15:36your buddies drinks all night and you
- 15:38guys can kind of take care of me if
- 15:39anything goes bad?" They're like,
- 15:40"Really?" I'm like, "Yeah, sure." I'm
- 15:41like, "These guys are on my tab." And I
- 15:43did that everywhere I went. So then I'd
- 15:44walk into place and they'd be like, "Oh,
- 15:46cost me a,000 bucks a night, but I
- 15:47didn't have to get in any fights cuz I I
- 15:49really didn't like fighting. I just
- 15:52>> wanted to make the NHL more than I
- 15:53didn't want to fight. So like that was
- 15:55kind of the thing for me, right? And I
- 15:57loved that I could do something that
- 15:59nobody else could do and my teammates
- 16:01loved me for it. And so that's kind of
- 16:03Al Tur. And then Al Tur gave me some
- 16:05other good advice which I did not use my
- 16:07first year in the NHL. He said, "Never
- 16:08get in a war of words with people that
- 16:11order their ink by the barrel or spend
- 16:13their days on a microphone."
- 16:14>> Oh,
- 16:15>> like we do.
- 16:16>> Like we do. So and I So I tried to keep
- 16:17it clean in the newspaper. Just take it
- 16:19on whatever else. go behind closed doors
- 16:21if somebody said something to me uh or
- 16:23something about me in the paper that I
- 16:24didn't like which I didn't really have a
- 16:26whole lot of that but uh yeah Alton was
- 16:29like like instrumental in me getting to
- 16:32the
- 16:32>> don't ever have war of words with Gar
- 16:34Butcher is what he was trying to tell
- 16:35you
- 16:37>> he's our best friend
- 16:38>> he will disassemble you
- 16:42>> um so as a player it was I think my
- 16:46first year here in St. Lewis, Craig
- 16:49McTavish.
- 16:50>> Oh boy.
- 16:50>> So, M T,
- 16:51>> last guy to play without a helmet and
- 16:53we're out there getting bag skated. It
- 16:55was the playoffs and neither of us was
- 16:57playing. And uh I was pissy about it,
- 17:01you know? I'm like cuz I thought, well,
- 17:02I should be in the [ __ ] lineup, you
- 17:03know? Course you're young. You think I
- 17:06should be on the top of the power play
- 17:07right now.
- 17:08>> Al, step aside, please.
- 17:10>> Yeah. I was like, hey, there's a funny
- 17:12story about that, too, by the way. About
- 17:14Al. I'll tell you that one, too. But M T
- 17:16and I are skating and I'm pissy. I'm
- 17:18like kind of I'm a really good skater.
- 17:20So I go half speed, 3/4 speed. I'm I'm
- 17:23skating with MAC T. And he's like, "What
- 17:25are you doing?" I'm like, "What?" He
- 17:27goes, "You should be burying me." He
- 17:30goes, "You're 10 times the [ __ ]
- 17:32skater I am." He goes, "Right now, they
- 17:33think you're the same speed as me." And
- 17:35he goes, "What if they're looking at
- 17:37that and going, "Well, this guy's no
- 17:38[ __ ] good. He can't even skate faster
- 17:40than Craig McTavish for He can't put
- 17:42this guy." He goes, "Every [ __ ] time
- 17:44you're on the ice, it's a try out. Every
- 17:46time."
- 17:47>> I'm like, "Okay." So then I started
- 17:49burying him in all the drills and he was
- 17:50like [ __ ] pumped about. Yeah. He's
- 17:52like, "You're too good to be scratch."
- 17:55He goes, "You're too good not to play."
- 17:56He said, "Show them every time."
- 17:58>> So that was Mte. Now I got almost the
- 18:01same advice from Scotty Bowman.
- 18:03>> I was in Detroit.
- 18:04>> And you know, you got all these [ __ ]
- 18:06Hall of Famers. Nobody's practicing
- 18:08hard. Like if you practice hard, you're
- 18:10almost the [ __ ] You got Eerman,
- 18:12Zederberg, Datu, Holly, Shanahan, Ray
- 18:15Whitney, like all these guys, right?
- 18:17>> And a buttload of oves.
- 18:19>> Yes.
- 18:20Not not so many of them. There was more
- 18:22Swedish guys when I was there. The
- 18:23Russians had kind of went their way. But
- 18:26uh he skates up to me and he goes, "Hey,
- 18:29having a good training camp was my very
- 18:31first training." Yeah, you're having a
- 18:32good training camp. He goes, "Uh, hey,
- 18:34let the coach catch you doing something
- 18:36good." I go, "What?" He goes, "I'm I'm
- 18:41just telling you." He goes, "You're
- 18:42nothing you're not doing anything
- 18:43wrong." But he's like, "Most coaches
- 18:44catch people who are doing something
- 18:46bad. They look for the bad. They look
- 18:48for like the bad the the lack of effort,
- 18:50whatever." He goes, "Every time I turn
- 18:52around, I want to catch you doing
- 18:53something good. Working hard, good pass,
- 18:55good shot on net, stop in front of the
- 18:56net, picking sticks up in front like I
- 18:59want to catch you doing something good."
- 19:00And so M's advice about always working
- 19:03hard. And then Scotty Bowman's advice
- 19:05about paying attention to all the
- 19:07details, too. making sure you're always
- 19:09on your game. I learned that from those
- 19:12two and I tried to put it to practice.
- 19:14>> Great predication.
- 19:15>> It's unbelievable. Yeah. I was like,
- 19:16"Fuck, that's great advice, man."
- 19:17>> Oh, yeah, it is.
- 19:18>> Subie, what do you got?
- 19:19>> I have two things. So, I was a young
- 19:2118-year-old kid coming out of Northwood
- 19:23Prep and I went to the Montreal
- 19:24Canadians training camp.
- 19:25>> Northwood Prep.
- 19:26>> Yeah. Up in Lake Placid.
- 19:28>> And I went into Montreal. Yeah. It's a
- 19:30prep school. And it was great. It was
- 19:32great.
- 19:32>> Okay.
- 19:32>> So, I went to Montreal and I was 18. Um,
- 19:35for hockey was pretty good. It was a
- 19:37hockey factory kind of before they built
- 19:39these clinics and stuff like TPH and
- 19:41stuff.
- 19:42>> But the next summer I'm going in
- 19:44training camp with Montreal and to
- 19:46Montreal the old forum and I'm watching
- 19:48these guys walk around see how they
- 19:50carry themselves and
- 19:51>> who was playing who was with your
- 19:53>> carer was there Patrick was there I mean
- 19:55these guys were I'm in Boston watching
- 19:57play the Bruins all the time growing up
- 19:59and I'm like watching all these guys are
- 20:00like doing what they do and I'm like
- 20:02well this is how it's done. So I just
- 20:04kind of copied exactly what they did.
- 20:06And that was one thing. Then later in my
- 20:08career, when Jimmy Roberts was coming
- 20:11down on me, Jimmy Roberts made said
- 20:14something. We said, "Anything you can do
- 20:16at 3:00 a.m., you can do at 3:00 p.m."
- 20:18And I was like, "Okay, let's do that
- 20:20from now on.
- 20:24>> Happy hour.
- 20:25>> You can do 3 p.m. You can do 3 a.m.
- 20:27That's awesome."
- 20:28>> Oh, that stuck with me.
- 20:29>> But there's a the picture in the alumni
- 20:31room.
- 20:32>> Yeah. Yeah. Jimmy trying to get into
- 20:34sound talking about the
- 20:35>> every time we walk in they're like one
- 20:37in one ear.
- 20:40>> We got to show that picture by the way.
- 20:41>> We got to show that picture. But there's
- 20:43this picture in our alumni room and and
- 20:45Jimmy Roberts has got us and he's
- 20:46teaching him and Subie is just staring
- 20:48up.
- 20:48>> SUBIE STARING INTO THE BEST PARTY'S
- 20:51going what am I going to have for lunch?
- 20:52>> Jimmy Roberts was our defense coach. So
- 20:55he know he was talking to you about
- 20:56defense. You're like how can I play
- 20:57defense when I'm at the other line?
- 20:59>> In that picture he may have been the
- 21:01head coach. He might have been
- 21:02>> briefly because when they fired Keenan,
- 21:04there was a gap. Jimmy was a head coach
- 21:06until Q.
- 21:07>> He was he was definitely showing me
- 21:09something about defense.
- 21:10>> Dude, it's so funny. Are we going to
- 21:11>> I look at that every time I every time I
- 21:14skate, I look at that and smile. There's
- 21:16so many pictures in there. I just
- 21:18>> What do you got? Who's your
- 21:19>> man? I had a you know, Lula Marillo was
- 21:22a big part of my life. My dad and mom
- 21:24were a big part of my life. My dad would
- 21:26just pump my tires up like you're the
- 21:28tough like, okay. Um, you know, so I
- 21:30always had like that motiv. I didn't
- 21:31need much. I always called my dad before
- 21:33every single game, no matter what. Even
- 21:35if I forgot and I had to go run in the
- 21:37locker room real quick and he'd be like,
- 21:38"You're the toughest. Go out there." I'm
- 21:40like, "Oh god, guys, baby."
- 21:42>> Oh, yeah. But probably the best advice
- 21:43was uh Steve Hut in Windsor said, "Take
- 21:46your time with the girl situation." I'm
- 21:48like, "Okay." And I did. You know what I
- 21:51mean? You don't get married at a young
- 21:52age. Do this, do that. Just watch that.
- 21:54And I go, "Okay." And I never had that
- 21:57trying to find girls at Eureka High
- 21:58School, but I thought, you know, I'm a
- 22:01hillbilly wearing the same shirt two
- 22:02days in a row.
- 22:04>> You know, and then you when you get to
- 22:06Windsor in that little bubble and you
- 22:08just say, "Be careful with that." Like,
- 22:09okay.
- 22:09>> Where did you meet Kate?
- 22:11>> I knew her in high school, but she
- 22:13didn't talk to me. And then she became a
- 22:15Ram beneath her. She became a Rams
- 22:16cheerleader. And I got traded here. And
- 22:19then late like when I was like 29, I
- 22:21started uh seeing her out uh and she was
- 22:24single at the time. So that's when I
- 22:26started to wheel her. So a little later
- 22:28age kind of went through everything.
- 22:29>> All the girls that were available in
- 22:30Eureka wanted nothing to do with these.
- 22:32What you
- 22:32>> Yeah. I mean I wasn't that bad. I wasn't
- 22:34that pathetic. But I thought I I look I
- 22:35look back on it. I'm like I DIDN'T HAVE
- 22:37[ __ ]
- 22:38>> YEAH. My mom and dad didn't have any
- 22:39money, you know? Like I'm like bragging
- 22:42to people. I'm going to I'm a hockey
- 22:43player. They have no idea what I'm
- 22:44[ __ ] doing. He had a Six Flag season.
- 22:47You thinking about working at Six Flags?
- 22:50>> So, you know, spooky as [ __ ] you know,
- 22:53>> want to go to Ranger.
- 22:55>> You know, sweetheart,
- 22:56>> I would take girls in my my house.
- 22:58>> GET ONE FREE.
- 22:59>> My dad would come out and like have to
- 23:01go to the bathroom in the middle of the
- 23:02night, you know, in his underwear. I'm
- 23:03like,
- 23:06>> so funny. Who's yours? Well, I I've I've
- 23:10got so many Bobby Plagger euthanisms and
- 23:14things.
- 23:15>> I I mean, it would be an entire show
- 23:17because without his
- 23:20>> without his uh enthusiasm to share the
- 23:23game, and he shared it with everybody,
- 23:25don't get me wrong. It's whether you
- 23:26chose to listen or not. But if you lent
- 23:28an ear to him, you learned a lot because
- 23:31he go in depth because everything he
- 23:33said, whether it be funny or in justest,
- 23:35had some meaning behind it and had some
- 23:38history behind it. So it wasn't just
- 23:39willy-nilly, he had it, it was history
- 23:42and and if you ask where' that come, he
- 23:44will go into a story that's not only
- 23:47funny,
- 23:48>> not only funny. So on the back of this
- 23:50bottle is the most important saying that
- 23:53I think and I live by it and it it and
- 23:56if you want to and I'm not going to read
- 23:57it per on here but it's on the back of
- 23:59my bottle and that's a quote from Bobby
- 24:01Plagger is you got to play for the logo
- 24:04that's in the front. Never play for the
- 24:07name in the back. Always remember that
- 24:09that name placard is interchangeable.
- 24:12The logo is not.
- 24:14>> Yeah. What a great. Now, if you think
- 24:16about that, that is so true. And there's
- 24:19so many players that played for their
- 24:21name on the back and you could tell who
- 24:23they were. Didn't always shine through
- 24:25because meaning that well, they weren't
- 24:27always exposed, but there was times when
- 24:30they were being exposed when they could
- 24:32have played for the logo. Yeah. But they
- 24:33decided to play for that name in the
- 24:35back. And that meant that that defined
- 24:37you. That defined you. What you do one
- 24:40time is what you'll do all the time. Not
- 24:42necessarily always the truth, but in
- 24:44this particular case, yeah, if you're
- 24:45gonna if you're going to play for your
- 24:46name one time, I'm pretty hardressed to
- 24:48think that you're going to do it all the
- 24:50time. If you're going to run if you're
- 24:52going to run on being shot at one time,
- 24:54you're pretty much going to do it again.
- 24:57And that was one of the most important
- 24:59things amongst a whole bunch of other
- 25:00things. But Bobby Plagger had a great
- 25:02influence.
- 25:03>> I miss that man. biggest thing about
- 25:05that is cuz I I've said that forever too
- 25:07because I remember Bobby telling us,
- 25:09"Wait for the name on the front, not the
- 25:10name on the back, boys." And it was
- 25:12always about the group. The team was
- 25:14always more important than the
- 25:15individual. And I feel like, and I tell
- 25:17people when we talk about just St. Louis
- 25:19and how many of us alumni stick around
- 25:21here and how we were so tight-knit. Uh
- 25:24it's it's kind of the Bobby Pagger way,
- 25:26right? Like Bobby was always out in
- 25:28front self self-sacrificing himself for
- 25:30what was good for the group or whatever.
- 25:32like he worked for the Blues for what 55
- 25:34years and I think he did almost every
- 25:36single position including like in
- 25:39general manager head coach special
- 25:41assignments ambassador he wouldn't do
- 25:44your IHL team in ' 89 90 like the coach
- 25:48left the story goes you tell me but like
- 25:50the coach was there like they lost the
- 25:51coach somehow and they're like Bobby we
- 25:53need you to go down and coach this team
- 25:54he's like sounds good to me boom
- 25:56>> I remember though remember uh I remember
- 25:59>> he it got to a point where they had
- 26:01Bobby doing so much stuff. So much
- 26:03stuff. And they were in a meeting one
- 26:05time, Twist, you know what I'm talking
- 26:06about with this. And they're like,
- 26:07"Well, what are we going to do? We got
- 26:08We need somebody to do this. We'll just
- 26:10have Bobby do it." And you guys got You
- 26:13and Chaser got so pissed. Yeah.
- 26:14>> And said, "No, no, no, no, no. That's
- 26:16not what we're [ __ ] doing. Bob, have
- 26:18Bobby do it. What does he look like?"
- 26:19So, he kind of he would do so much. He
- 26:22was such an unbelievable ambassador. He
- 26:24would make everybody laugh. If you
- 26:25couldn't find him in an area, you just
- 26:27have to look over where all the
- 26:28good-looking girls were. And he's right
- 26:29in the middle of it telling stories,
- 26:31>> telling jokes,
- 26:33>> shaking his phone that thinks he got
- 26:34away.
- 26:35>> You never saw a picture of Bobby by
- 26:38himself. I'll tell you why. Everybody's
- 26:39got pictures of Bobby with Bobby. You
- 26:42know why? Cuz everybody want to take a
- 26:43picture. Goes, "No way. You got to stand
- 26:45with me."
- 26:45>> Yeah. So every picture and predicated
- 26:48that the second player that I respected
- 26:52obviously way before that but this
- 26:55moment in time was a eyeopener for me
- 26:58because the guys in today's game can
- 27:00take this to the bank. We're in Detroit
- 27:03game seven. Uh we're going to the
- 27:06Athenian Hotel in downtown. I remember
- 27:09that place.
- 27:09>> We're all getting off the bus and we
- 27:11have a starstudded team. Gretz is in the
- 27:13basket. He goes, "Wister, can you hold
- 27:15on? I'm going to sign some autographs."
- 27:17So, they no problem. Everybody went past
- 27:19all these fans. Not one, not anybody
- 27:21signed cuz we had a meeting in 45
- 27:24minutes or sorry, 1 hour up at at a
- 27:27room, whatever. And so, we stop and
- 27:30there's Wayne Gretzky. All right, we're
- 27:32game seven. We just game seven. We're
- 27:37going to the hotel, right? Or say it was
- 27:40game. Yeah, game seven. Going to the
- 27:41hotel and everybody's getting ready for
- 27:43the game. There's Wayne. Stops, starts
- 27:45signing autographs. There's a whole
- 27:46lineup he signed. But not only did he
- 27:49sign his name, he asked names. Yeah.
- 27:51What's your name, signs his name, and
- 27:53then signs sign signs that person's
- 27:55name, then his name.
- 27:56>> He stood there for 45 minutes. For 45
- 27:59minutes, and he whispered, say, Twister,
- 28:01we got to get to the meeting. I go, no
- 28:03problem. I said, on behalf of the Blues,
- 28:04myself, and especially Wayne Gretzky,
- 28:06thank you so much. Not one one not one
- 28:09person goes shoves it in the face, goes
- 28:11once more. They applauded him.
- 28:13>> Yeah.
- 28:14>> As we're walking into the hotel, I go,
- 28:17>> "You're a legend."
- 28:18>> He walks on water.
- 28:19>> You're a legend. And you know why? If
- 28:21you There's Wayne Gretzky.
- 28:23>> He's synonymous. Gordy How's Gretzky. He
- 28:26took the time on a playoff day and he
- 28:29signed for 45 minutes. And I promise you
- 28:32that he did not want he wanted to be
- 28:34there, but he he was tired. He was sore.
- 28:36I mean, I mean, this guy had been
- 28:38through war in this in this playoff
- 28:39series. but with a smile, with no He
- 28:43wasn't aggravated. He did everything and
- 28:46not one person shoved it back in his
- 28:47face.
- 28:48>> He He's probably the nicest superstar in
- 28:50the world.
- 28:50>> He's amazing.
- 28:51>> That to me is a mentality that every pro
- 28:54player, no matter what the sport should
- 28:55carry, like I always said like, and
- 28:58Jamie says this to me, I said, "We'd
- 28:59like to go out for dinner and right
- 29:01before we go out, are you ready to go?"
- 29:03And most of the time, yeah. But if I'm
- 29:05not, it's because I have You always have
- 29:08to have to smile and you got to and you
- 29:09got to be prepared to put shake hands.
- 29:11>> We're all ambassadors in some capacity,
- 29:13>> right? But not just for yourself. You're
- 29:15for the entire league for everybody. And
- 29:18if Wayne Gretzky didn't I know he did
- 29:20that more than a million times, but with
- 29:24the same enthusiasm. Are you kidding me?
- 29:26Now there's something to be learned.
- 29:27That was that to me was like
- 29:29>> that's why you're the king. Gretz I I
- 29:31remember that actually because I was in
- 29:33front of Gretz offering my autograph to
- 29:34people saying wait for Gretz for Gret
- 29:39now but here's my Wayne Gretzky moment
- 29:42several moments passed after this I had
- 29:44so many great times with with Wayne he
- 29:46was such a downto- earthth guy teammate
- 29:50like go out drinks dinner like it was
- 29:54just one of the guys but my very first
- 29:56time ever meeting Wayne Gretzk we had
- 29:58traded for
- 29:59We're on the road. Uh I wasn't with the
- 30:02team at the time. I get called up our
- 30:04first home game with Gretz and I'm in
- 30:08the lounge the old Keel Center at the
- 30:10time getting you know and I look in and
- 30:12there's Gretz remember he sat like Holly
- 30:13sat on one side of the door. Gretz was
- 30:15on the other side and Chaser was beside
- 30:17Holly and uh I remember looking like
- 30:20>> like a little tally there Gretzky. Oh my
- 30:24god. So I'm like I'm kind of nervous as
- 30:26I walk in the locker room. That locker
- 30:27room was massive. You're walking and I'm
- 30:30like walking towards this little man
- 30:33like he's not big. He was like 165 170
- 30:36pounds soaking wet
- 30:37>> and uh I walk over to him and I go uh
- 30:40>> hey no Jamie Rivers nice to meet you. He
- 30:43goes hey Wayne. I'm like no [ __ ]
- 30:47>> But he stands up. He meets me and he
- 30:49goes Jamie. Oh yeah. He goes oh [ __ ] He
- 30:51goes you uh you had a hell of a junior
- 30:54career. He put up some big points. I'm
- 30:55like I was like he KNOWS IT.
- 31:00It was But I learned like later on like
- 31:04he was just that good of a person. He I
- 31:07don't know if he researched it.
- 31:08>> Oh, he did. Every teammate, everybody.
- 31:12He knew who I was. He referenced like
- 31:13some of my like point totals and junior.
- 31:15He knew I played for the Sudbury Wolves
- 31:17and all this stuff. And like he's like,
- 31:18"Oh yeah, it's a pleasure being your
- 31:20teammate." And I was like, "Oh shit."
- 31:21You know,
- 31:22>> makes you feel good. But then when we're
- 31:23on the ice, I'm passing the puck like on
- 31:25a breakout to Wayne Gretzk to D to
- 31:27Gretz.
- 31:28>> Yeah, let's go. Like
- 31:29>> it's good when a superstar is nice like
- 31:31that.
- 31:31>> Got to watch other people do that.
- 31:33>> We did. Yeah, I did. They did let me
- 31:35play. So, you know, another awesome
- 31:38teammate of yours and a little bit of
- 31:40mine cuz I only had training camp with
- 31:42them. Grant Fur left a left the lasting
- 31:45impression on me for the rest of my
- 31:47life. First off, he was so nice to me.
- 31:49the training camp that I fought you and
- 31:51Chaseer in that those fights earning
- 31:53three exhibitions. And back then when
- 31:55you're making $40,000 a year, getting
- 31:571,500 bucks for an exhibition game was a
- 31:59big deal
- 32:01to play some cash.
- 32:04>> I COULD GET IT down in the right. So,
- 32:06we're we're going to Colorado and me and
- 32:09Brent Johnson and FZY were all on the
- 32:11scratch list and there's still like 40
- 32:12of us on the team on the plane. We go
- 32:14down there. Um the guys are getting go
- 32:16to the rink and we all go for lunch and
- 32:18there's 15 or 20 of us going for lunch.
- 32:20So lunch happens. We go around and
- 32:22they're like, "All right, boys. Birds in
- 32:23the bush." And I'm like, Grant sit
- 32:25beside me like,
- 32:26>> "What's Birds in the Bush?" He's like,
- 32:27"Well, it's a game we play and whoever
- 32:29has to pay for the whole meal." I almost
- 32:31puked my dinner on the table. I ain't
- 32:34got 2500 bucks to pay for this meal. I
- 32:36have [ __ ] nickels. It's the worst thing
- 32:37that's ever happened to me. I'm like,
- 32:39"Okay, just be calm. How do I BECOME?" I
- 32:42GO, "HOW DO I PLAY THE GAME?" HE'S LIKE,
- 32:44"WELL, you're going to get three of
- 32:45these little sweet and lows."
- 32:46>> Yeah.
- 32:47>> And uh put them put them in put them in
- 32:49your hand. And you got your hands on the
- 32:50table and you put your hand on top of
- 32:52the table. D For those of you that don't
- 32:53know birds in the bush, you got to guess
- 32:56how many are in there. So,
- 32:57>> collectively
- 32:58>> collectively for everybody, right? And
- 33:00everybody shows their hand. They count
- 33:01them up and and I there's 15 of us and
- 33:04it's down to me,
- 33:06>> Chris Mallalpine. And I forget who the
- 33:08other one is. The only reason I know
- 33:09it's Malpine is cuz he lost. And I
- 33:11There's three of us. and the sweat and
- 33:14the nervousness. Like
- 33:15>> all I keep thinking is how am I supposed
- 33:17to tell these guys I can't afford to
- 33:18pay? I'm going to be the biggest loser
- 33:20on planet Earth, right? So anyways, I
- 33:22get out. Malpine plays against somebody
- 33:24else. He loses. We get up. Grant comes
- 33:27over and he wraps his arm around. He
- 33:28says, "Kid, you were never going to have
- 33:30to pay that bill." And I was just, you
- 33:32know, and then that we uh uh that was
- 33:35like the third or fourth game we played
- 33:36or whatever. And so on we're coming home
- 33:38after the game that night and Grant used
- 33:40to sit at the very back of the plane. We
- 33:42used to have the DC9s from American
- 33:44Airlines, three seats on one side and
- 33:46two on the other and he's all the way
- 33:47back there and he sends one of the
- 33:49stewardists up to get me and says Grant
- 33:51Fear wants to see in the back and I'm
- 33:53like okay like am I is Fury cutting me
- 33:55like
- 33:59did you go down and work on your game?
- 34:01So I go back and he's like, "Sit down."
- 34:03And he moves over and like I am getting
- 34:04death stares from everybody on the way
- 34:06back like what's this rookie F1 doing
- 34:09walking back here. I'm like, "Mr. Fear,
- 34:12>> Mr. Fear." He asked for me and then he
- 34:13stood up. He's like, "He's with me,
- 34:14guys. Relax." And so I go sit with them.
- 34:16We have a Captain Ginger cuz that was
- 34:18his drink. So we're having a couple of
- 34:20those. And then at that point in time,
- 34:21Mike Kitchen came back and called me up
- 34:23and he's like hanging out in the back
- 34:25with the boys. I'm like, Grant told me
- 34:26to go back. He's like, "Well, we just
- 34:27want you to know awesome training camp.
- 34:29D everything was great. Hey, you're
- 34:30going down TO THE MINOR. I SAID,
- 34:32>> APPEARS HE'S NOT CUTTING. YEAH. I go,
- 34:35can I go back? He's like, absolutely. Go
- 34:37back and have a couple more cocktails,
- 34:38kid. Good job. You know, Grant Beer was
- 34:41and every every time I saw him at a game
- 34:43after that when I made the NHL, he calls
- 34:45he called me sweet and low. Like that
- 34:47was his thing for me, sweets. And uh so
- 34:49I just he he just that lasting
- 34:51impression that an older hockey player
- 34:54doesn't have to give to a young kid. And
- 34:56so I always tried to do that when I was
- 34:58the veteran guy on the team. trying to
- 35:00search that guy out that needed some
- 35:02love or needed somebody to just believe
- 35:04in him or be good to him and that guy
- 35:07that love
- 35:08>> how
- 35:09>> would that I don't know if that's still
- 35:11done to but being called
- 35:13>> the importance of the guy's giving you
- 35:15[ __ ] because you don't belong in the
- 35:16back of the plane with all of us right
- 35:18>> so being called now it's not out of any
- 35:21other it's a privilege all right you
- 35:23earn that privilege and that was where
- 35:25the hierarchy stood but when you get
- 35:28called on the rug by by one of the
- 35:30veterans to come on back and everybody's
- 35:32giving you hey where you going hey no
- 35:34problem
- 35:34>> and you go back so that that that that
- 35:36feeling right the importance
- 35:38>> I accepted I felt accepted
- 35:40>> that so get going back to that whole
- 35:42team playing for the crest
- 35:44>> that's what fury was doing building the
- 35:46crest not being included down there
- 35:49doesn't mean you're not part of the team
- 35:50all right but when you bring it's like
- 35:52being made you're you know you're going
- 35:54down and the guy called me up the
- 35:56importance of that going back to that
- 35:58crest not name.
- 35:59>> I I tell you this
- 36:00>> was an amazing man.
- 36:01>> I when I was young, I didn't want to
- 36:04hang out with the other young guys on
- 36:05our team. Although I was always like the
- 36:06youngest guy and maybe that
- 36:08>> I always force myself to hang out with
- 36:10the older guys. I would want to hang
- 36:12out. What are you guys doing? Like the
- 36:14guy the young guys don't know anything
- 36:15about New Jersey. They don't know where
- 36:17to go. They don't know the deli guy.
- 36:19They don't know where to go to New York.
- 36:20Why am I What's Marty doing? What's you
- 36:23know getting dressed?
- 36:26Seriously, what's Colin White doing?
- 36:28What's Langen Burner doing? No, I want
- 36:30to hang with you guys. Like, just can I
- 36:32tag along with you and and Mavichuk and
- 36:34all those guys and um you know that that
- 36:36was cool. But I did the same thing when
- 36:38I was playing for the Blues. I would
- 36:39take all the young guys everywhere. I
- 36:41would take them.
- 36:42>> The coaches didn't want that.
- 36:43>> I would I would take all these young
- 36:46guys to Harry's and have them spend
- 36:47night at my house. I brought Reaver out
- 36:49to my house one time and I showed him
- 36:51all my hockey fights. He made him watch
- 36:54>> I made him watch my hockey fight tapes
- 36:57all night drinking his sneezing the
- 36:59whole time cuz of my little kitty cat I
- 37:00had. He was allergic and then he goes TO
- 37:03BED AT 4:00. HE GOES TO BED AT 4:00 in
- 37:05the morning in my brother's room and uh
- 37:08and uh he gets called 6:00 in the
- 37:09morning. He got sent down and right
- 37:11afterwards
- 37:14and then he you know a year later he
- 37:15took my job. So it's all good.
- 37:17>> So I got a great Grant Fear story. It's
- 37:20a funny one. one to to put a ball on.
- 37:23One of the greatest human beings ever.
- 37:24Love fury. As a young defenseman, it was
- 37:27a blessing to have a guy like that
- 37:28because he make mistakes and the puck
- 37:30ends up in the back of the net.
- 37:32>> And I remember one time passing the puck
- 37:33like across the front of the net, got
- 37:36whapped down. I think it was Joe Sackic.
- 37:38Knocks it down, fires it in the net. I'm
- 37:40like, "Oh god." Fears. He goes, "Yeah,
- 37:42terrible pass." He goes, "I probably
- 37:44should HAVE HAD THAT."
- 37:46AND I'M LIKE, "OH." He goes, "Don't
- 37:48worry about it, kid. I'll get you next
- 37:49time."
- 37:49>> Yeah. But this one story, we're in
- 37:52Philadelphia. I think both of you are on
- 37:55the team at the time. Jamie McClennon is
- 37:57our backup goal.
- 37:58>> Well, I was there. I was there during
- 37:59the entire time. FY.
- 38:01>> So, Fuzzy had brand new pads. Just to
- 38:03set the the story straight, he had brand
- 38:05new pads delivered that morning to the
- 38:07rink. Giant just big white pillows. And
- 38:10Fury wore those like hip high pads way
- 38:12back in the day.
- 38:12>> Oh, right to the nipples.
- 38:14>> And he goes right into the pads like
- 38:16most goalies like they got to break them
- 38:18in. He gets in the pads. He goes out for
- 38:20pregame skate. No problem. Noodles Jamie
- 38:22Mlennon is starting that night. So Fury
- 38:25wears the brand new pads for the game.
- 38:28Noodles playing a great game. Halfway
- 38:30through the second period, uh Noodles
- 38:32cramps up and he he hits the turf.
- 38:35>> Oh, I remember that.
- 38:36>> And he's like, "What the hell?" Like we
- 38:38didn't know what's going on. Like what
- 38:39happened to Noodles? You know,
- 38:40>> well Fury at the time when he was
- 38:43backing up, he'd have a bunch of like
- 38:45chips and coke and stuff like on the
- 38:46bench. He was eating stuff. a picnic.
- 38:49>> Yeah. Like on the bench,
- 38:50>> hot dog, nachos, like you name it. The
- 38:52like roofer would be going to get him
- 38:54like all this stuff. So anyways, Fury
- 38:57Ray goes out on the ice. Noodles is like
- 39:00can't even move. They're like it's like
- 39:01a body just pushing like weekend at
- 39:03Bernie's as he put him off the ice. So
- 39:06Fury has to go in. Fury brand new pads,
- 39:09but he doesn't care. You know, it's
- 39:10Grant Fear. He doesn't give a [ __ ] So
- 39:11he goes out there and like the first
- 39:12place guy comes down, you know, the
- 39:14Grant Fear, the glove save, you know. HE
- 39:16GOES DOWN, GLOVES. AH, AND HE keels over
- 39:19like, "Oh [ __ ] there goes another
- 39:21goalie." Like, "What are we going to
- 39:22do?" Ray's in the room with with with
- 39:24noodles. Jeff Cop, weird, who was our
- 39:27massage guy.
- 39:28>> He's the only one close enough to being
- 39:30like a first aid person. He like looks
- 39:33and it was Kenan, I think. Kenan, well,
- 39:35GET THE [ __ ] OUT THERE.
- 39:38>> SO, Copy's like running out there. He's
- 39:39like, "What am I going to do? MASSAGE
- 39:40THIS GUY?" LIKE ON THE ICE and he and
- 39:44for everybody he did look like weird
- 39:46Yankee looked identical
- 39:47>> and smelled like him
- 39:48>> a little bit. Yeah. Really nice guy in
- 39:51the room.
- 39:51>> So Fury's rolling around on the ice for
- 39:53a little bit. Kobe goes out there and
- 39:56like a minute and a half to two minutes
- 39:57later Fiery's okay.
- 39:59>> Cope comes back to the bench goes he's
- 40:01good.
- 40:02Okay. So then the period ends and we go
- 40:05in to the locker room and Fury goes into
- 40:09the training room and he asks for a
- 40:11little bag of ice and he undoes the top
- 40:14strap of his pads or whatever and he
- 40:15puts it on his knee. I'm like, "Oh, [ __ ]
- 40:17your knee, man." He's like, "Yeah." And
- 40:19he pulls the ice back. There is a
- 40:22circle, perfect circle that is swollen
- 40:26and red and like what? He forgot when he
- 40:29was eating stuff on the bench, he had a
- 40:31jawbreaker in his pad. He slid it. HE
- 40:35>> SLID IT UNDERNEATH HIS PAD. HE FORGOT.
- 40:37AND THEN WHEN HE WENT DOWN, HE LANDED
- 40:38HIS KNEE on top of the jawbreaker.
- 40:40THAT'S HE'S LIKE, "THAT'S SO GOOD."
- 40:43>> SO KEENAN'S LIKE, "WHAT HAPPENED?" AND
- 40:45HE'S LIKE, "I JUST TWEAK SOMETHING.
- 40:47WE'RE GOOD."
- 40:50>> Lucky he didn't get pulled like five
- 40:51times in a row in every city when he
- 40:54didn't play.
- 40:55>> He was unbelievable.
- 40:56>> Except for that season that he played 79
- 40:58great games.
- 40:59>> Yeah. Bruce Rene got one start that
- 41:00year.
- 41:01>> That was it. One start. We're in We're
- 41:03in Toronto in the old Toronto. Remember
- 41:05the old Toronto where you literally the
- 41:07the the backup goalender was literally
- 41:09in the seat in the
- 41:10>> So was the So was the six defenseman.
- 41:12Trust me. I'm sitting like this.
- 41:15>> The glass is here. So the bench is no
- 41:17longer I'm actually in the crowd next to
- 41:19the guy. Hey, how are you?
- 41:20>> So I'm not playing. I'm I'm dressed.
- 41:23>> But you need to leave all the room for
- 41:25everybody in the bench. So there's no
- 41:26point. You can't put the grocery stick
- 41:28there.
- 41:28>> So there's no grocery stick. I'm sitting
- 41:30I'm sitting beside Fuzzy
- 41:32>> and I you know first period go and I'm
- 41:33starving. I go fury we got to get some
- 41:35food for the second period and he goes I
- 41:38got some coming. I go really he goes I
- 41:39got your dog. So seriously we got second
- 41:42period now know chefs no nothing. You
- 41:45know it's about 5 minutes in. He goes
- 41:47should be coming and there's a guy comes
- 41:50down delivers the food.
- 41:52>> Well feed in Toronto before he played
- 41:54for us in context.
- 41:55>> Yeah. So you know you pay for go no it's
- 41:57all taken care of. So, he's got we've
- 41:59got a soda,
- 42:01cheesy nachos, and two two hot dogs.
- 42:04Now, I'm looking I'm trying to eat this
- 42:07dog, and Fuse just we don't give a [ __ ]
- 42:10No.
- 42:10>> Oh, sure enough, right up in the
- 42:11jumbotron, there's me and F.
- 42:14I'm like this.
- 42:17>> Oh, [ __ ] Good thing it wasn't TV
- 42:19timeout.
- 42:20>> Oh my god. Oh my god.
- 42:21>> Oh, you would have got nowadays. [ __ ]
- 42:24You couldn't do that
- 42:25>> in Toronto. He still works there. His
- 42:27name's Craig. He was like the usher/se
- 42:30security outside the locker room. They
- 42:32wear the suit and tie in Toronto. Well,
- 42:35started Maple Leaf Garden and then it's
- 42:37now it's the Air Canada Center. I don't
- 42:38know what it is. Let's go. It's changed
- 42:40name. So, the rink in Toronto. Now, I
- 42:42was playing for the Senators at the
- 42:44time. And when I signed with the
- 42:46Senators, they had a bunch of injuries.
- 42:48So, I played a ton at the beginning of
- 42:50the season and then as guys came back, I
- 42:51started playing less and less and they
- 42:53end up being like a healthy scratch like
- 42:5420 games in a row or whatever. In those
- 42:5620 games, we had a bunch of games
- 42:57against Maple Leafs. And every time I go
- 42:59in there, Craig, who worked the locker
- 43:01room, I'd be like, "Hey, Craig, I'm
- 43:02gonna get a workout and ride the bike."
- 43:03And then they had sushi at the rink. I'm
- 43:06like, "Can you get me some sushi?" And
- 43:07he's like, "Oh, yeah, yeah." So he'd go
- 43:08get me some food and it became like my
- 43:10buddy. So then the next year I go into
- 43:14Toronto. I'm playing for the Bruins at
- 43:16this time. And uh Billy Garren is with
- 43:19me. We're walking in and Craig is like
- 43:21says, "Jamie, how are you?" One of the
- 43:23nicest humans ever. I go, "I'm doing
- 43:25good." He goes, "Hey, NEED THAT FOOD
- 43:27TONIGHT?" I GO, "NO, CRAIG, I GET TO
- 43:30PLAY THIS."
- 43:33>> That's great.
- 43:33>> AND HE WAS LIKE, "OH, that's great."
- 43:35>> Those guys are all good dudes in Even
- 43:37the ones at Enterprise Center, man.
- 43:39They're all just
- 43:39>> everybody's awesome.
- 43:40>> They're They're at every game. They're
- 43:42>> Letter Kenny, one of the I love Letter
- 43:44Kenny. Now one of the great episodes
- 43:46which I believe a lot of us you know
- 43:50when we played did learned the guys in
- 43:53the rink. I knew everybody who ran the
- 43:55Zamboni,
- 43:56>> you know, went after practice and
- 43:58visited the guys in the janitori I knew
- 44:01everybody.
- 44:02>> Not everybody. Of course, I'm getting
- 44:04bag dragged cuz I wasn't playing a whole
- 44:06bunch, but I got a chance after meet
- 44:08everybody. Shake hands. And do you know
- 44:11to that day, it's still carries the
- 44:12guys.
- 44:13>> Absolutely.
- 44:13>> I mean, some we walk in
- 44:15>> being a good person. That's nothing. By
- 44:17the way,
- 44:17>> walk in, high five all the security.
- 44:19What's that? What's your emblem? Because
- 44:22every one of those guys I'm playing for
- 44:24I gave a lot of the barbecue sauce away.
- 44:26This one they they want to you know
- 44:27they're always have any camp.
- 44:32I'm telling you
- 44:34>> they're asking for the fist of fire,
- 44:36baby.
- 44:37>> All right, guys. Hey, that's episode
- 44:39five. You got some Shy is carrying that
- 44:41on in the show, right? Did the same
- 44:43exact thing.
- 44:44>> That's exactly That's what I'm saying.
- 44:45Shy did the same thing. Maybe it was not
- 44:47Letter Kenny. Maybe
- 44:49>> that that to me that's again going back
- 44:51to the team, right? just because you're
- 44:53not wearing a jersey. The people in the
- 44:55office, the people that are that are
- 44:57that are cleaning the ice, you know how
- 44:59important it is to clean the ice, right?
- 45:00How important. We're in Calgary and
- 45:02Edmonton, they'd adjust the fl the
- 45:03temperature of the ice depending who
- 45:04they're playing. I mean, I don't know if
- 45:06that still goes on, but that that was
- 45:08real. It was a fast team. Make that just
- 45:11a little more sludgy. It was if it was
- 45:13a, you know, a team that you could out
- 45:15skate.
- 45:15>> I think we tried to do that to the Red.
- 45:17>> Didn't work out. I don't think you do
- 45:19that anymore.
- 45:19>> So damn soft. I got you in my slush.
- 45:23>> I have one quick thing on that.
- 45:25>> We're in the playoffs. Scotty Bowman,
- 45:27Coach Keenan,
- 45:28>> this is going to be quick.
- 45:30>> We get in, the lights are off. I don't
- 45:32know. You were You were
- 45:32>> I was on that team.
- 45:33>> The lights are off. Okay. It's a pregame
- 45:35skate, right?
- 45:36>> Yeah.
- 45:37>> Lights are off. We can't turn the lights
- 45:39on. Why? Cuz it's a union shop. We can't
- 45:42turn one light on. We have to wait for
- 45:45the union to come down. Oh, no. It gets
- 45:48better. To turn the lights on. They have
- 45:50no idea.
- 45:51>> Turn the lights on. We're waiting for
- 45:52like 15, 20 minutes. I mean, literally
- 45:54can't turn a light on in the in the
- 45:56dressing room. They got a union guy, a
- 45:58rep waiting for the union guy. Can't
- 46:00touch it.
- 46:01>> Okay, cut the lights on. Perfect.
- 46:03Getting dressed. Whatever. The game
- 46:05clock is on top is on the ice. They drop
- 46:07the clock. All right, it's our turn to
- 46:09skate.
- 46:10>> Um, yeah, we can't we got to wait for
- 46:12the union to do that.
- 46:13>> Yeah.
- 46:13>> Another 10, 15, 20 minutes for the
- 46:16Glock. We're We're just waiting to
- 46:17skate. All right. And I'm thinking
- 46:20Scotty Bowman's a genius.
- 46:22>> He does. Every year in the playoffs,
- 46:24we'd go in there for game one in Detroit
- 46:26and freshly painted room.
- 46:28>> Oh yeah.
- 46:29>> So you'd have the paint fumes, you have
- 46:30a headache, you know, you'd have like
- 46:32seven towels, no hot water, one bar of
- 46:35soap, like whatever he could do to make
- 46:38your life miserable or get you off your
- 46:39game.
- 46:40>> To think about him, not the game. That's
- 46:42it.
- 46:42>> Crank the heat.
- 46:43>> Yeah, crank the heat. Hot room, but no
- 46:45hot water. Old Joe Lewis was not easy to
- 46:48I mean the showers were like they had
- 46:50the prison showers one stream like
- 46:53>> like five guys in a circle.
- 46:55>> Oh, it's so got awful.
- 46:56>> They had Little Caesar.
- 46:58>> They had pizza. You damn right.
- 47:01>> There we go, baby. Simple
- 47:04scratch in Detroit all the time. I'm
- 47:06like,
- 47:07>> uh, sorry guys, I got hungry before I
- 47:09got in the room. Sorry. Two pizzas.
- 47:13>> See you later. If you like Joe Lewis, if
- 47:15you played for the Red Wings,
- 47:17>> life was unbelievable.
- 47:18>> Yeah. It's honestly one of the greatest
- 47:20experiences I had in my life was being a
- 47:22Detroit Redwing. Mike Illich was an
- 47:24unbelievable owner. Uh he treated every
- 47:28player like they were a Hall of Famer.
- 47:29All the Hall of Famers treated every
- 47:31player like they were equal. Well,
- 47:32because most of them were Hall of Famers
- 47:34anyways, but even guys like me, like it
- 47:36was like you see the lights here, you
- 47:38know, they had the the one bulb and I
- 47:41sat next to I sat next to Nick
- 47:43Lindstrom, Steve Iman, no big deal.
- 47:46>> But Stevie was over here and one day
- 47:49like life was good at this point. I'm
- 47:50playing a lot playing like 15 16 minutes
- 47:52a game on the Red Wings. That's a lot.
- 47:54>> And uh I got on my stool and I went up
- 47:57into the ceiling and I took the light
- 47:58out that was like above my thing. Stevie
- 48:01goes, "What are you doing?" I go,
- 48:04"Stevie, shh." I go, "If they don't know
- 48:06I'm here, they can't send me down or
- 48:08train." So, our corner was like dark.
- 48:13>> And I remember when I did finally get
- 48:15trained like two or three years later,
- 48:17two years later,
- 48:18>> uh the trainer, uh Paul Boyer, the
- 48:21equipment guy, he went to put the light
- 48:22back in. Stevie goes, "No, no, leave it
- 48:24out. I like a dark room."
- 48:26>> That's good.
- 48:27>> Stevie. Stevie. Wow.
- 48:28>> He had a tough time. He uh he was my
- 48:31favorite player growing up. One of the
- 48:32greatest ever Gretzky and Lemieux are
- 48:35the ones winning everything, but Steve
- 48:36Eisermanman had the worst team in
- 48:37Detroit. Won the Lester B. Pearson
- 48:39award, 155 points. He was second in the
- 48:41NHL. I think Gretzky had like 212 or
- 48:44something that year. I think Gretzky had
- 48:46163 assists and Eisermanman was second
- 48:48in the league with 155 points. But I
- 48:51just loved him because he was just kind
- 48:52of that guy. I didn't cheer for teams. I
- 48:54cheered for him. So, my sixth, seventh
- 48:56game in the NHL, we're I get my first
- 48:59shift and he's taking the face off in
- 49:01the defensive zone and I don't know what
- 49:03I was looking like, but it had to have
- 49:05been pretty cheesy because I'm on my
- 49:07thing and he's like getting ready for
- 49:08the face off and he looks over and I
- 49:10must have been like
- 49:11>> and he goes, he looks at me, he's like,
- 49:13"How you doing, kid?
- 49:15>> Just talk to me. Just talk to me." Uh,
- 49:18so yeah, I was like I I uh Holly was on
- 49:21the team then and uh
- 49:23>> uh I got his uh game you stick that
- 49:26guess.
- 49:26>> That's awesome.
- 49:27>> My first game against Steve Eisermanman
- 49:28and I still got to stick it home.
- 49:29>> Still got stick took the tape off,
- 49:31signed big across the bottom of the
- 49:32blade.
- 49:33>> Stevie was awesome as a teammate. Uh I
- 49:35remember going in there
- 49:37>> for it be a short one here. my very
- 49:38first training camp as a Redwing and I
- 49:40played for the Blues and you know he he
- 49:42spent years trying to murder all these
- 49:44guys especially like Draper and Malpy
- 49:46and those guys and I knew Stevie from
- 49:48growing up. He's about seven years older
- 49:50than me from Ottawa and uh so I go in
- 49:52that first day. It's a little weird at
- 49:54first because guys are like guys are
- 49:55cool but they're like you know don't
- 49:57know this guy
- 49:58>> not sure this guy's like speared me like
- 50:0027 times not sure
- 50:02>> and so Stevie grabs me and uh he's like
- 50:05hey we're done with the practice. He
- 50:07goes, "Uh, come with me." I said, "Okay,
- 50:09cool." So, we're up in Traverse City.
- 50:11So, we always do our training camps and
- 50:13and so after the skate, I go see Steve.
- 50:15He's like, "All right, come on." And we
- 50:16go back up. We we're going to play golf.
- 50:18I didn't know that. Go play golf with
- 50:19all the other guys like like the the
- 50:21teammates, the real guys. And he
- 50:23introduced me to everybody. We played
- 50:25golf, had beers, and like after that,
- 50:27everything was great.
- 50:28>> But, uh, he was like a true leader. true
- 50:31leader brought me into the group. Knew I
- 50:33was going to be a part of it and he was
- 50:34like, "Okay, we got to
- 50:36>> we got some things here." Apparently, we
- 50:37need to get through this.
- 50:38>> Integrated you.
- 50:39>> Yeah. Yeah, he did. It was awesome.
- 50:41>> Gave his endorsement.
- 50:42>> Yep.
- 50:42>> That only takes one.
- 50:44>> So, good guy.
- 50:45>> Good show today, boys. Dan, before we
- 50:47say goodbye, I think we all should just
- 50:49give a little shout out to our good
- 50:50friend Angie over at
- 50:51>> Spas. We got a we got a badass sponsor
- 50:55and uh we just appreciate her. We
- 50:57>> thanks for getting cold.
- 51:00Hot tubs, baby. Get down. Hot tub and
- 51:03more.
- 51:03>> Ashley keeps bothering me about
- 51:05>> Oz and I did that for you.
- 51:09>> Plunges hot. Yeah,
- 51:10>> everything.
- 51:11>> Oh, business. That's what I got.
- 51:13>> IR infrared saunas.
- 51:15>> Yeah, very nice. That's what I got. Good
- 51:17for you.
- 51:17>> Dry sauna.
- 51:18>> I forget what it's called. A sweaty
- 51:19goat.
- 51:19>> Sweaty goat, baby. You're damn right.
- 51:21>> Dry. And then greatest of all time.
- 51:24>> Oh, you get sweaty in that bad boy. Hey,
- 51:26thank you guys. Check out Bear Knuckle
- 51:28Nation. Love all you guys. Peace.
