Transcript
- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday.
- 0:04I am Jenn and joined as always by my partner in podcasting, Meggan.
- 0:10So we are recording this in advance because Meggan and I are heading out on back to back trips, uh, which is very exciting, and I wanted to talk to you about booking an open jaw itinerary.
- 0:23Meggan, had you heard this term before?
- 0:26I had indeed heard of the term, um, but I've not experienced the term.
- 0:31So why don't you share what you're gonna be doing?
- 0:34Yes, so my husband and I are in just a few hours really flying to Ottawa, and then we are coming home from Montreal.
- 0:46These flights are booked on the same reservation, so this is called an open jaw flight.
- 0:52It could be the other way around.
- 0:54For instance, if we were leaving Halifax and flying to Toronto, and then later flying Toronto to Calgary instead of back to Halifax.
- 1:02So open Jaw can be a really great way to book travel if you're planning on visiting multiple cities and you don't wanna go back to the first destination before flying home, or you could have to book it for a cruise that , doesn't bring you back to your departure port.
- 1:21Right.
- 1:22So for us, we booked it because we wanted to visit two cities and it actually was cheaper to fly home from Montreal.
- 1:29So that worked out.
- 1:31We've booked it before on our honeymoon and it was just a repositioning thing.
- 1:35We flew Halifax-Reykjavik, Reykjavik-London, and then home from Paris.
- 1:41So before you book your flights with an open jaw itinerary, there's a couple things you should do.
- 1:48You should double check if it's cheaper to book one way flights instead.
- 1:53Google flights is a great way to explore your options, but I would always book directly with the airline.
- 1:59It could be a good way to book with points or miles.
- 2:03If you're doing like a rewards flight, you might get a better bang for your rewards bucks.
- 2:09Um, and then of course, before you book your flight, this goes for all flights really.
- 2:14Double, triple, quadruple.
- 2:16Check that you're booking the right dates and the right two cities.
- 2:20'cause you don't wanna make a mistake.
- 2:22Yeah, no, for sure.
- 2:23That would be, uh, that would be an unfortunate way to end your trip.
- 2:27It definitely would.
- 2:29So Meggan, I know you said you haven't done this before.
- 2:32Would you consider booking an open jaw flight?
- 2:35definitely.
- 2:35I think it would be something that would, and during the booking process, raise my anxiety for sure to make sure, okay, are, are we getting from point A to B, to C to D and then back home like, but I think of course, see the value in it.
- 2:47I've just never had a trip where I've had the opportunity to do it or need to do it.
- 2:52Mm-hmm.
- 2:52in the future 'cause it sounds very metropolitan.
- 2:55Um, very international.
- 2:57But yeah, no, I've not done it, but I definitely would be open to it if it's needed.
- 3:01Yeah, it's just something to know and, and it was a kind of a good like vocabulary, travel vocabulary word to have in the back of your mind.
- 3:09If someone tells you that they're booking an open jaw flight, now that we all know what it is.
- 3:14So that is all we have for this week's episode.
