- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Here we are, man.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: That intro is so new, it just pumps me up every week.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: We are back, George.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: We traded our cleats for clipboards, but we never left the game.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to Cleats and Clipboards, your front row seat to Pennsylvania High School football, brought to you by Sportswire.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Week one is in the books, and what a week it was, Coach Howanitz.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Tonight we react to the openers, we roll out our updated Sportswire rankings, and we preview a loaded week two across District 2.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I want to thank the listeners.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: George and I are appreciative, our SportsWire team, for the responses to the premiere.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Great response that we received.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: And if you're just finding us, it's a weekly show, part of the Sportswire family.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: We are a day early this week, little schedule note, because I got to fly to Florida with the Abington team.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: So we are recording here Tuesday night starting next week.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: We settle into our regular slot Wednesday nights at 9 p.m.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: And if you don't know us, uh I'm Coach LaMagna here, a Lakeland grad, former wide receiver, semi-pro captain, coached at Lackawanna College for three years.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Honored to be in the minor league football news hall of fame, and now coaching at Abenton Heights.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: And then my partner in crime over there, Coach Juanitz on the opposite side of the ball, primarily a defensive back, although he played some good offense as well from Valley View, NEPA Sports Hall of Fame, and now the head football coach at Honesdale.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: You know, the hook here, two former players, now coaches, but now we're on the same side of the microphone.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: So that is fun.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Coach Juanitz, how are you this evening?
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Good, Dan.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Thanks, but I appreciate uh all of all the listeners as well.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: They did a great job, I thought, last week.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: A lot of good feedback from all the local people with local sports.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, we'll talk about some football coming off a big win for Homesdale last week.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: So we got lots to talk about.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: I know you're excited, Coach.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Definitely a very good week there.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Our listeners were on fire in the chat last week.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Hopefully they are again this week.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Again, we'll answer as many questions as we get to.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: We definitely have a lot to cover, and we got to start tonight with the Sportswire Player of the Week presented by Hydro Bath.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Now, I I gotta lead with this before we get into it for our listeners.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: You know, Coach Juanitz and I, as we partnered up for this show, you know, we agreed we were kind of staying out of our own team's business.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Coach Juanitz is staying away with you know some insight for the listeners that's good that they're definitely gonna want to hear related to Honesdale.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: And the same thing for me, coach in Abenton Heights.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: So Coach Juanitz took himself out of the mix today for the for the player of the week.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but we looked at the overall cast, the Sportswire team, myself, and we still landed in Honesdale, Coach Juanitz, our Sportswired player of the week, presented by Hydra Bath, because every great performance earns a great recovery.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: And this week it goes to Honesdale running back Gabe Duda, 218 rushing yards, two touchdowns, six tackles on defense.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: You know, I have a fantasy football show after, Coach.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: If you give me 218 yards and two touchdowns and six tackles in a week, that's a pretty good game.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: And I I think if the listeners who tuned in last week, I talked a lot, coach, about you know how big it was for your team.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: You know, coming off an opponent that you lost to twice last year, the stats are one thing, but you wanted to, you know, keep building that culture and get the team on track.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: And Gabe Duda certainly helped you get there.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: So, George, you know, having made this pick into you know, us making this pick for you, I still want to turn it over to you for an inside view.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Walk us through that as you were on the sideline.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: What was the impact of Gabe Duda last week?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Dan, you know, he is uh obviously it was a huge game for us.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: It was the uh Wayne Pike Shrine Bowl.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: It's the big rivalry game up at uh between Holmesdale and Wall and Paul Pack.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: So it's uh uh huge game.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: We've played each other now.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: This is the third time really in almost a year.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, we have a pretty good uh knowledge base, I think, on each team has on each other.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, Gabe is really just a he's a throwback football player.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're running the wing T.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Uh he's playing fullback for us.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: So uh, I mean, if you look at his stats, they're not he's not getting these big runs or anything.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: He is really uh a true workhorse.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, his longest run, I think, was 30 yards.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Um, it's five yards a clip, six yards a clip.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So uh he just did a he I've coached a lot of great running backs at Valley View.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Uh he would definitely fit right into uh one of the top backs I've ever had.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's uh you can't you never get a clean shot on him.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: He's always spinning, twisting.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Uh he's got great vision, and uh, you know, you'd love him.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: He's uh uh like I said, he's that true workhorse where uh if a D-back comes up to hit him, he's dropping his head and trying to uh punish the tackler.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, he fits just in a mold of what you need for a wing T and plays defense, plays special teams, he punts.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, he's really, like I said, a true throwback.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: He doesn't come off the field and he uh, you know, we're kind of gonna go as far as he takes us this year, and the team knows that.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: I think uh he's relished that role, and um, you know, he'll keep doing that for the rest of the season for us.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Love to hear that, coach.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: You know, on top of the talent, you're really describing a high character player there that's leading the team.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: And uh, Gabe, if you happen to be listening, man, kudos, congratulations on the Hydra Bath player of the week.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: And I've gotta add this in there.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: We've Hydra Bath was kind enough uh to give one of our listeners, and the first listener to comment tonight, it was Justin Bradley giving Gabe a shout out, send him congrats.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Uh Justin, you win some bath salts, man.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: If you're working hard, you got some bath salts coming from Hydra Bath here to help you relax and recover like our athletes.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Um, so kudos to Gabe and our and our Hydra Bath winner.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: Gabe's got a couple shout-outs there.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Coach, as we go into our recap of week one, uh, you know, Honesdale, your squad beat Wallon Popak 26 to 14.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I'm sure you want to give a shout-out to Turk Acker, who also had a big game.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you give us a little recap uh sidelines of what you, you know, how that game went, and you know, give a little shout-out to Juan Popak, who's who's a good opponent.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it was a great football game.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was uh it was 7-7 at half.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Um you know, Turk did a great job for us as well.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I think I told you earlier uh on one of the earlier shows, and we played a lot of freshman football players last year.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So Turk was one of those kids, started every game last year as a freshman.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, it's tough, I think, for a 14-year-old kid to get thrown in there with 18-year-olds, but uh did a great job.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: He's he's really uh all those games under his belt, you could tell already, uh the dividends it's paid.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: He was uh tough on defense and uh great as our uh our wing back, uh H back in the wing T.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So, you know, if you key on on uh Gabe too much, we're coming back uh with a little inside reverse with uh with Turk, who did a great job of scoring twice and making some guys miss.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, he fits some old into what we're trying to do.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Hard worker, busts his butt every day, doesn't come off the field, uh, you know, much in the same kind of makeup as as Duda is for us.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: So uh again, pop pack back and forth, just kind of a couple turnovers here and there for both teams.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, I thought there was a hard-hitting game, very physical.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, came down to probably the fourth quarter.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: We got a couple scores late and uh, you know, really turned the tide for us.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: One thing that stood out, you mentioned there, you know, a young player in Turk, where hey, all of our high school rosters, and you and I know this as coaches, you know, sometimes talent gives you that first look, but how important it is for younger guys to really just stay focused and be ready for that opportunity.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it's just showing that little extra maturity to gain that coach's trust.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: You know, you put in the work in the weight room, you stay focused that practice.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Nothing drives me crazier than being that practice and seeing some guys, you know, a little chitty-chatty on the sidelines when they should be focused.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: And I'm thinking, man, your opportunity comes, you're not gonna be ready.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: So I like that you speak to his maturity.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: That's really important as a coach.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: I just think uh I've said this to a lot of people with all my, you know, my last X amount of years of Valley View when we're making district championship games and playing at a pretty high level each year.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Uh somebody asked me, how do you keep it going?
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: And it the answer really to me was simple.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: You can't be afraid to play young guys.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you give them a little bit of it's it's uh uh TK Kramposki used to say we're gonna get baptized by fire.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, you throw them in there, they might not make some plays, some games they look really bad, but uh getting games under your belt and uh letting kids play early, and then having them year in and year out, switching in with seniors and things like that.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I just think if you want to sustain a program, that's kind of what you have to do.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: You can't have the big turnover, you can't have 14 seniors starting on both sides of the ball, have them all graduate, and have guys who've never gotten on the field.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's tough to win that way.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So you got to have that mix, and uh he's part of that mix for us, and I think uh hopefully they'll take us a long way this year.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: I think there's a lot of those examples out there.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think back to our Abate game this weekend, we had a fullback in Brady McCulligan and a quarterback in Gavin Shea.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: They had to get out there and help.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: And they're younger guys and they made some mistakes, but the game wasn't too big for them.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: You know, they were able to handle those mistakes and learn from it and really show growth as a player.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: So great points there.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: And and coach, there were some other statement teams this week.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: We saw Dunmore with a huge win, 42-0 over Wyoming area.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Other statement teams, North Pocono, the defending 4-8 champ.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: They led Berwick 30 to nothing after the half.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: You know, I believe they subbed some guys in, got them some experience.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: The final score was a little bit closer, but big first half there.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: And then Dallas with a big score over Tunkannock, 42 to n to zero.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: So some big performances there, and then some performances worth naming.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Caden Voglino of Carbondale, four touchdowns, including an electric 88-yard kickoff return.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Nothing excites me more than seeing special teams shift the momentum of a football game.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: So big one there for Kaden.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Weston Yannoni, Dunmore, three touchdowns, 173 yards from scrimmage.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Jake Jekyll, Cresswood, 250 rushing yards.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: That's a big game on the ground.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Brady McDermott from Holy Redeemer, five touchdown passes, 268 yards, and a near comeback.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Didn't quite get the win, but that's a great game to build on.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Redeemer also had a school record 99-yard touchdown drive.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: Man, nothing more we could be more proud of, Coach, right, than driving 99 yards.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: A lot of things have to go right there.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Tevin Williams of Williams Sport, he had uh, I believe close to 410 yards of offense against a District 2 team in Valley West.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: And then, Coach, I gotta break out the props.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: A shout out to my boy here from Lakeland, all right.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Chase Rosencratz, congratulations, buddy.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Became Lakeland's all-time career receptions leader with 137 catches, man.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Here it is.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is one of Chase's runs, I believe.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Come on, Brad.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: Where's where's that Chase uh record-breaking reception there?
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I know he's a little pass because he flipped it.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: He flipped it in front.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So it's a forward pass.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Coach Wanich, you're on your game there today, identifying the shovel pass.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: That's one way to make history, Chase.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: All right, all right, kudos.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: That's the first time I've ever seen a history maker with that, but hey, whatever works.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: With a shovel pass.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: That's a money completion there.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: And hey, he executed, and I am beyond jealous for 137 career catches.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Beautiful picture there with mom and dad, right?
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: I'm sure they're beyond proud.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: So congrats, Chase, on making school history.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: I think anytime a kid does that, that's just something that lasts forever and a lot to be proud of.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Um, a few cautionary openers to just touch on before we get into our rankings.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Old Forge let a lead slip away.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: They were up 21-0 at the 21-0, and then they they let it go.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: I know Coach Schubek's gonna get on him and fix whatever mistakes he, you know, we're happening there to let that lead slip away.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Wyoming area was shut out.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: They've got to work hard to get the offense going this week.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: My Abenton Heights Comets lost a tough one 10-3.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Quarterback Noah Kale was out of that game, so we had to bring a young guy in to hold down the fort.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: So, again, there's some things we really gotta keep a close eye on, coach, as we go into this weekend's games.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just think uh to me, the Dunmore game really was the biggest surprise for me.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: I thought Wyoming Area with all the guys they had coming back, I thought that would be a much closer game.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, North Pocono doesn't really surprise me just because they have played at home and uh, you know, they have some that senior quarterback coming back.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Uh West is back, and and the game started off.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: They kicked the ball over West's head, he picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown to start the game.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: So, you know, some of those uh senior athletes are just difference makers.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: He's a big one.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, it's the same thing with Dunmore uh and a lot of the players you're talking about here, even uh those kids from Lakeland.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: But um, I was also surprised, at least for me, I thought locally, um I thought our teams really held up against the the Allentown teams.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Uh the games were really close.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: A lot of them came down to the wire.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Um Delaware Valley was in a nail biter, even the Abington score at 10-3 is uh you know, was a nail biter for me.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: The uh Valley View score was close uh going into the fourth quarter.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: So I thought, you know, I thought we put up uh uh District 2 at least put up a great fight against, to be honest with you, teams in the past that have really kind of trounced a lot of the District 2 teams.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So uh I was happy to see that.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I think again, you learn a lot in week one and you hope you fix some things and uh get back at it for week two.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, great point there on the out that you know the way we competed in our district against those Allentown teams.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: I coached a semi-pro team up in Allentown, man, and I I've seen the level of athletes there.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: And you know, our game against Allentown Central Catholic for Abington, that much respect to them.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: They had a bunch of really good athletes, some good players.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: We hung in there.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: We, you know, as a coach, sometimes you have those self-inflicted mistakes, and like we had a punt that they muffed, went over their punter's head, and we just didn't get the pressure on him.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: I thought we were gonna get great field position.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: He ends up booming like a 70-yard punt and then pins us back.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Um, so it was a good game.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: We hung in there, but again, a lot of good football there versus those Allentown teams.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: So week one is in the books.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm getting some love here, coach, from Corey Joyce, man.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: It was a blast from the past there.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: He remembers playing against me.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Corey, man, heck of an athlete.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: I remember you.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: So I love when we get a little bit of history on the show here as we go back in time.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: So, coach, here we go.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: It's time to roll out the rankings.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, George, I'm gonna let you roll them out, buddy.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Defend them.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I've got my challenge flag ready.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I'm interested.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I know our listeners are interested.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: I think Sportswire put a little teaser out today, showed some of those rankings.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Kick us off tonight with the small school top 10, and uh let me know your thoughts.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: All right, so the uh small school top 10, and listen, when I go through some of these things, um, just because you lose, I think doesn't mean you should drop out of a ranking.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I think it's uh depends on who you played that week.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Uh were you home, were you away, you know, what do teams have?
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: So um number one, Dunmore.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I I just thought uh for the show they put on, um, that definitely should kind of put them at the top.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, you're playing another, what I think would be a state, state ranked team in the Wyoming area.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, and to win 42 to nothing, I thought was impressive.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Uh Lakeland starts the year off, I thought very good.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, a lot of question marks at quarterback, but uh, you know, he put on a show.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: He had 111 yards passing, 120 rushing, uh, you know, and they they did a great job in their game.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Scram Prep played a close game.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, team from New York, again, dropped them down a little bit just because uh, again, for me at least, I'm not sure how that team was, or uh I don't know a lot about them.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: So I think the uh, you know, that one, two, three ranking right there, you could probably mix and match those three teams.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: If they played each other, it'd probably be like a a round robin that would take place.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: One would beat one, one would beat another.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean area down at four.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Um, I still think they're a great football team with a lot of seniors.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: They're unbelievable.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Go ahead, throw them.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: I gotta throw the first challenge flag of the coach night.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: First flag.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: So I don't mean to interrupt you there, coach, but I want to kind of set it up for our listeners.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: So it sounds like you're looking at the talent on that roster, but a 42-0 loss, that's a tough one there getting shut out.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Does that road raking hold up, coach?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I just thought this was a good spot for a disagreement.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: You know, and and Wyoming area fans, don't get mad at me.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: I'm rooting for you.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: I know there's definitely, as coach is gonna allude to, some talent, but that's a tough one at number four.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: I don't have, again, I don't have all the uh stats or whatever who stayed in, but I know in some instances in that week one, if you're, you know, that score could have been 28 or 35 quickly, and then uh, you know, teams take their teams take their foot off the gas and things like that.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: So uh there's always some kind of little variables that take place.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I I just think with the guys they have, and I've seen this before, I mean, I've seen teams go out the first week and get Trunks and then never lose another game the rest of the year.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think Wamingary, with all the kids they have, they'll get that back together quick.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: And that roster is way too good, uh, you know, I think to give up to a lot of the teams we have that are down lower, at least for me.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: I like that coach.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: And I think we see Hoc Duran coming in.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: I believe he had to be, he's got the inside scoop there.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Again, we get as much intel and information as we can from our network and from what we read and research, uh, but some quarterback injury potentially there.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: And we know that could really change a game.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Again, I experienced that at Abington this week.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Kudos to our quarterback, but it's always, you know, you lose your starting quarterback.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: That wasn't the game plan going in.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: So, you know, if they lose their quarterback in that game, that supports your number four rankings.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, they get their quarterback backing back on track.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: And Dan, I can tell you this.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, we lost our center early in the game on Friday.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, it's tough when you put a younger kid in who hasn't really played there a lot.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: And, you know, obviously snapping the ball is a big thing.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we had a couple fumbled snaps and uh a couple things here and there that you know, we end up landing on a ball.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: If Walmall back lands on the ball, now that game could be totally different, you know.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: So uh there's so many variables, you know, this those five or six plays probably in a game.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: If you could take them out, the game might be flipped.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'm assuming based on what they're saying with the quarterback play, that would be a huge loss for them.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, playing against a great Dunmore team.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: And as a coach, what we hope for is a roster has resilience and they bounce back.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: You know, it's the first experience that these young guys are gonna get.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: You see what they do, get them ready, they're gonna learn from that experience, and you build.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: So, with that, coach, let's get back to those rankings.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Who do you got number five?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: So, five is Riverside.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, again, I think with Rolls of Quarterback, I just think they're gonna be in every game with his athleticism.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, big playmaker for them.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: And they really didn't need that many big plays from them uh last week, but uh, you know, he's a difference maker there.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be tough to defend.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Western Wayne with a huge win, uh, over trail.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, a statement kind of win.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: They threw the ball well, they ran the ball well.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, so we moved them up to the sixth spot.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Lake Lehman, big win over Mid Valley, uh, which bumps them up to the seventh spot.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Carbondale, a huge win.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, we talked about um Caden Vogelino for them.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Uh four touchdowns, kickoff return.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: So a lot of offense there for them.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: I know Coach Arthur's really happy with how they started the season.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Uh Lock on a trail at nine, dropping down a couple spots.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: I still think that by the end, they're so young.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: I think by the uh end of the year that wing T will come, you know, come back to where it needs to be.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: They'll get better play in certain spots and uh you know they'll stay in the rankings and then mid-valley at 10.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, tough game, 14-13.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I think it was a score against uh Lake Lehman.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: So still a good football team, some good players there, and uh, I think they'll be a tough team to reckon with as the season goes.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: That's a solid top 10.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: With the listeners' help, I think you backed up my challenge flag.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if I have another one tonight or not.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Dumware definitely backed up number one with that 42-0 win.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: And as we shift now to the big school top 10, I got a feeling you're gonna kick us off with another team that made a statement game and backed up their number one ranking.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, obviously uh North Polkano number one.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Uh they started number one and they obviously showed us what they can do uh at that spot.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Great offense, great defense.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Uh played a great team in Berwick and held their own.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Dallas at two, huge win for them.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Uh shutout win, I think, at Tunkanic.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Uh so again, a lot of good offense there.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Uh coach will have them going through the year.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Abington, uh, even though they lost, again, I look at opponents they played, same thing with Valley View, same thing with Delaware Valley.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: 3-4-5 to me.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, even though they lost, that that schedule they play uh in game one uh is gonna be better than probably most teams we're gonna see in our area for the rest of the season.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: So uh, and I was like I said, to uh really happy with how well those teams did.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Um bumped Honesdale up to six, obviously.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Big win uh rivalry game.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Playing a team you played three times in the last year, uh it's a huge win.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Pittston at seven, um, and again, probably.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: 6, 7, and 8 there could be, you know, put in any kind of order you wanted to put them in.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Pitston, though, gave up 50 points to East Stralsburg South.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: A lot of offense there.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Great play from their quarterback.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Santino Capitano.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: 148 yards rushing, 106 yards passing.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: So a lot of offense there.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Berwick, obviously, playing a tough opponent in week one in number one rank North Pocono.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And then West Grant with a huge win.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: We bumped them up to nine.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: And Whoopsbury area rounding out the top 10 again.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: I think it's a solid set of rankings there, Coach.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: And you know, I think you hit on it.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: But you know, schools like Abdon Heights, Valley View, and Pittston, you know, it's one, yeah, they do have a good reputation.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: It helps hold those rankings a little bit.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: But I think we know they played good competition and the expectations are they'll bounce back in in week two.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: And then, coach, the the question I gotta ask here is is that Honesdale team underrated?
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Could you know big win?
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Big win.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have uh, and you know, I can speak to this, and I've had other teams that have been the same.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: We have a lot of kids coming back.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, like I said, we played.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: If somebody said to me as a head coach, uh my first year at Holmesdale, I'd have to play six, seven, eight uh freshmen and sophomores by the end of the year, like starting.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're not gonna win a whole lot of games probably that way, but uh the outlook is though the next year and the year after, and the year after that, those kids now have two or three years under their belts.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: You're hoping, you know, that that gets you in a spot you want to get to.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: They're tougher or more physical, they understand the game more, they've been in big games.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, so I just think, again, uh, I think a lot of people, and even when we did the first set of rankings, they're like, how could you rank this team?
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: They only won two games last year, or they won three games, but every year it changes.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you could have, like I had, a lot of young guys, and now the next year they're not so young, and you're you know, you're bringing a lot of guys back, or you had an injury the year before, and it, you know, had helped you uh you lose some games.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So there's so much that happens year to year in high school.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Uh obviously, there's it's not like recruiting and go out and get the pieces you want and bring them in each year.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, in in normal public schools where you have what you have, uh, you could go from a team that's you know average one year to winning the district the next year.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: All good points.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: You know, the more those teams mature, and you know, they're gonna rise.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: And sometimes you lose some guys and you you you go back a little bit, but it's developing that young talent.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: And we're gonna keep watching this weekly.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: We'll see how these rankings continue to evolve.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: Coach, I I'm gonna shift gears and talk about the fit of the week now, fueled by Fit AF Nutrition.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Some of you listeners may remember the drip of the week from last season, our Sportswire followers there.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Well, it's back, but with a new name and partner.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Fit of the week, fueled by Fit AF Nutrition.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Our Sportswire team is watching every Friday night.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: So when you see those cameras on the sidelines Friday night, they're looking for the best game day fits.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: And our first winner is gonna drop tomorrow.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: Coach, you probably know something about Fit there.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: You're looking sharp tonight with the Nike golf shirt there.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: You're looking good.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: All right, mate.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know if coaches are involved in this on Sportswire, but players, you know, dress sharp there, follow those teams' dress codes.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: And when it comes down to your own fuel, check out Fit AF Nutrition Meal Prep and use the code SportsWire, S-P-O-R-T-Z wire, to save 20% off your first order of seven meals or more.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: So 20% off your first order of seven meals or more with the code SportsWire, the fit of the week fueled by FITAF Nutrition.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: And I gotta give a personal shit out, shout out to our sponsor here, FITAF owner, Jordan Galasso.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Jordan is a is a dude.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you ever met uh Jordan George, but he's a he's a personal trainer.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: He actually trained me for a little while there.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: I like good coaching, so he would coach me up and say, Dan, this is your workout, and then I would follow that program as I try to stay a little young.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but he was a bodybuilder, just amazing amount of knowledge with nutrition and working out and lifting.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: So I'm glad he's partnering up with the team at Sportswire uh to provide this offer.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: So I'll be interested to see who gets uh the drip of the week tomorrow on Sportswire.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And Dan, I'm just I mean, I've tried uh the Fit AF meals, like anybody who's watching or listening, or uh the food's unbelievable.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: It's all set, it comes pre.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: Uh you kind of throw it in the microwave, comes pre-packaged for you.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, put it in the fridge.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: Pull if you're someone who's on the go a lot or just you don't have a lot of time to cook.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Uh they have three different packages for you depending on what kind of uh amount of calories you want, kind of what you're trying to do.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: But the food is uh there's a lot to choose from.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: It's unbelievable.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: It's uh you know, it's it's not really highly priced.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: And even for athletes, like if you're coming home late at night after a practice and you're you know you're not able to get meals and things like that.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, it is uh it's a great thing to think about.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, especially with our busy schedule.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: The athletes and the coach's schedule is you know, on top of work and all and school and all the other responsibilities we have to have those meals prepped is is outstanding there.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: So, and then plus you get 20% off with the code SportsWire.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: So love, love that, love that.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: And speaking of fueling up, we got to fuel up for week two here, coach.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: We got another big slate of games, 22 games.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: We're recording here on Tuesday.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Um, so this is an upcoming preview for week two.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I know we have Thursday games with Abbotton Heights at Trinity Prep and Montrose at Susquehanna.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: The rest, I believe, are Friday.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna kick us off with some featured games here, and then we'll go rapid fire down the list.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Every week we'll try to really spend a little extra time highlighting what we believe are some of the better games of the week.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna make sure we touch on every school and it all come together as we go through the season.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: So, starting off here, we have Berwick 0-1 at Pitston area 0-1.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Is this the desperation game of the week, coach?
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: We had two Wyoming Valley Conference contenders, both 0-1.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: One of them's gonna leave 0-2.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: What's your thoughts?
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just think uh, you know, like I said, I think definitely I would say for Berwick, probably more than uh more than Pitston, but I mean, you know, coming off that game last week where you probably thought it'd be a lot closer.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, with all their seniors that Berwick has, especially like Brady Cleaver last week, went 144 rushing and a touchdown, 220 passing in a touchdown.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a legit game.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Now, obviously a lot of that's coming from behind.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, who knows how North Pocono defended and things like that when it was 30 to nothing, but um huge game for Berwick.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: They got a travel to Pitston.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Uh Pitston, like I said, he gave up 50 last week uh defensively, but uh scored 30 plus offensively.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: So I see this being maybe a high-scoring game.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I just I just like Berwick seniors.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna uh, you know, they have enough guys in positions where they make plays.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: So uh I see Berwick going into Pitston and uh starting one-on-one and Pitston starting all on two.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Man, I don't want to agree with you right out of the gate there.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: You know, I I think this is this is a really good game, but that tradition of Berwick, they're a team that could definitely travel on the road.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: They're coming off a you know a tough game.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Um, I know there's a little local hook here.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Pitston now coached by Paul Russick, who left Honesdale, coach where you took over.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh, and I think he's gonna have that Pittson area team ready at home.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: But I'm gonna give a slight edge to Berwick, even despite being on the road.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and Paul Paul really does a great job.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: He's a great coach.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Uh he coached in college, um, you know, at Susquehanna and all and some different places.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: So uh he's gonna have them ready.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: They're they're a great team.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: But like I said, I just think the the athletes and uh ages of Paul graduated a lot of seniors last year.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Um I just think that senior leadership from Berwick would be that little, give them that little slight edge.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: So we're on the same page there.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: I think we're expecting a high score, slight edge to Berwick.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: I'm now gonna shift it over to Lakeland at Lake Lehman.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Both teams 1-0.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Coach, what do you got for those Chiefs?
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, I'm gonna pick in this one.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: I think this uh Lakeland just has too many weapons.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Uh again, that question mark a quarterback got answered really quick last week, uh, with him going for 111 and passing and 120 rushing, two touchdowns.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: Um Lake Lehman uh got two touchdowns from Heinrich last week, so they'll have a little bit of offense, but I just think uh too many athletes, too many weapons.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna say Lakeland probably big in this game.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm not going against my Chiefs here.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: You know, they really stepped up.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Kudos for Rocco at quarterback.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: And like everybody I talked to in the kind of coaching circle, you know, I'm asking, hey, what do you think about my Lakeland Chiefs?
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: You know, quarterback injury change.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: And everybody felt they would, you know, they had an answer there and they moved some guys around having the the volume of athletes they did, and they came through.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: So, all right, we're two for two, coach, both picking Lakeland.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: We we got to disagree here soon.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: Maybe a game of the week candidate?
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: West Granton, Carbondale area, two explosive one and oh teams.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: I'm hearing a lot of good stuff, Coach.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: So um if you if you did a little deep dive into West Scranton, they had two brothers that really put on a show.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Uh John Ye and uh and Austin Sastre.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: They went for five touchdowns between the two of them.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Um so Wes Scranton has a lot of athletes.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: We had some passing scrimmages against them in the summer, a lot of speed.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Uh they can do a lot of things, spread you out.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Um, so you know, Carbonil offensively, I think, is gonna be good as well.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: You're going to Carbonil.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: You got to play on grass, which I think will uh slow West Granton down maybe a little bit.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: But um I I just speed to me kills in high school.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think West Granton has a little more speed than Carbonil.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: I don't think it'll be a um a blowout by any stretch.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be a close game, but um, I'm gonna go with West Granton in this game.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna ride the wave of momentum there.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: Continue again, coaching circuit a little bit.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: A lot of people, even before their game last week, was talking about good about West Granton and they backed it up.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, I really like their matchup here, and we'll go with West Granton as well on the road.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Dunmore at Lackin won a trail.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: Dunmore 1-0, trail 0-1, trails at home, two traditional scout small school powers.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Any chance here trail could pull off an upset?
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say no.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, you put 42 up on Wyoming area.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: This could be uh uh even worse.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: But um, I like I said, I just think Trail had so many starters last year that were seniors, and they're big play guys uh graduated.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, Dunmore again, same like uh same kind of idea that Lakeland, a lot of weapons, uh a lot of senior weapons as well, guys that have been in the big games.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, and they're like I said last week, they're not even just good at this sport, they're good at a lot of different sports.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Costanzo, great at track, uh, Unone, great at track.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: So you're getting these um Ferrari area really like world-class athletes playing at a very high level, and uh I just don't think Lacuana Trail has enough to be able to stop that.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have a feeling Dunmore is gonna convincingly keep their number one raking there.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: We'll give a shout-out to Lacquanna Trail's off-state lineman, Anthony Pellucci.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: He's gonna get a good test this week and a great opportunity for some game film.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Hey, Trail, any given day, you never know.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: So we'll see what happens there.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: Shifting over to the Valley View Cougars going to Crestwood.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Valley View 0-1 and very hungry for a win versus a 1-0 Crestwood team.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is gonna be a good game, I think.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Uh they always Crestwood and Valley View for years have always played each other tough.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's two very different offenses.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Crestwood's gonna get in like a single wing and try to pound the ball.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, like you said, um Jake Jekyll had 254 yards rushing.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: So obviously they're trying to run the ball.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think Valley View's pretty good though defensively to be able to uh hold up against that.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: And for all uh that I heard last week about the game, I thought you know Valley View played tough.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: They were in the game until the end.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Couple plays here and there.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Uh that game might have shifted.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: Um see the sports wire highlights here from Valley View.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be uh Dempsey to Cash Row.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: And and again, you're gonna have uh Colin Dempsey came in the game last week uh off the bench.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Their starter got hurt, uh Caleb Brown got hurt, so Colin came off the bench, uh, you know, did a great job, I think, running the offense.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: And Cash Rowe, who came out for the first time this year at receiver, was just dominant against uh, you know, again, an Allentown team that usually is very athletic and very skilled uh in the D-back position.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I think they'll get some guys back that might have been a little dinged last week that they didn't play in certain spots.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: And uh again, I think it's gonna be close, but um, I'll give Valley View the edge at Crestwood.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: Seems like our listeners are with you too.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: We see Dave with Dave Kurtzman over there with the Valley View over Crestwood.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: We have Justin Asinot, my boy Just, give it to the Cooks coach, you know, and and Coach Juanis, you have them, but man, we've agreed too much tonight.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: We've so I'm gonna pick an upset here, I think.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: With I'm gonna go with the home field advantage and that strong running game of Crestwood and a nail biter.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: I'll go with the upset just to disagree with you on one of these, Coach.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: We'll see what happens.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: But I agree with you.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: It should be a great game.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Dan, it'll be an interesting game, I'm telling you, because it could very well be uh, again, if you base it on last week, it could be a lot of rushing against a lot of passing.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: So uh it'll be an interesting game on Friday night.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Hey, coach, you know, I'm not the only one getting love tonight.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: Dave said I looked like Juan is to carry for the touchdown.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: Another old school memory there.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: That would have been the one time of game we threw the ball.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: I was just having that conversation with Coach Akiri over at Abenton tonight.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: We were going back and talking about our dream games, and I don't know what brought it up or triggered it, but yeah, we're talking about the very low volume of passing uh that happened back then.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: So, hey, another interesting game here.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Wyoming Valley West 0-1 going to Dallas, who's 1-0.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: You know, is this a little bit of uh contrasting styles of uh football play here?
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Is we have one team uh, you know, Valley West with a quarterback coming off a big game in Damian Easton against the Dallas defense fresh off a shutout.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Coach, what do you think?
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Dallas is uh, first of all, you're going to Dallas, which is already one strike against you.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: They're tough to beat at their home field.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Um, they're very balanced.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: If you look at the stats from their game, they had, you know, they didn't have a lot of guys with 200 yards rushing.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: They had seven guys with 80 yards rushing.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: So uh they're gonna be super balanced.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they don't make a lot of mistakes.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Uh and they have the pedigree.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think when you get into these games, they've been there, done that.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Valley West really uh has been a team who hasn't been really fantastic the last couple years.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: I'm happy they're doing better.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I think they're uh you know they're moving in the right direction, which is is great for District 2, but um I just think Dallas is gonna be too much.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: I think they're like they've been in that system now.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: They're well coached by uh Coach Manel for you know whatever how many years now, 10 plus years.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: And uh they're just a tough team to beat in the Wyoming Valley Conference.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Gonna have to agree again.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: You know, again, I think Wyoming Valley West will come out swinging.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: Damian Eastman will keep them competitive.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: They got some good athletes uh in the secondary, but special teams, home field advantage, everything you said, coach.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna give that game to Dallas as well.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Looks like our listeners are there as well, and also a little more love there from Kim.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: I know Kim over there.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: We love Coach Juanitz.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: So, listeners, man, we appreciate you all tonight.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: You guys are awesome.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Keep the comments coming.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: Feel free to pop in some questions we could try to get to at the end of the show.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: One more game I'm gonna spotlight just because it's kind of unique before we go the rest of the way around the district.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna let you focus on this one as I take myself out of where I'm coaching for as much as I could.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: But Abonton Heights 0-1 at Trinity Prep, Florida.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Uh great opportunity here, coach.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: I think Del Val made a Florida trip last year.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: Just a great opportunity for one of our local teams to get on a plane, go play some competition that they normally wouldn't.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: You know, football in Florida is pretty big.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Abonton Heights coming off a loss has a nice test against Trinity Prep.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just think uh, I mean, I I've looked into doing some of this with some of my teams.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: So they're usually, for the listeners, they usually try to match up uh teams by school size and things like that.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: They try to make it as even a matchup as possible, but you'd know more about that, but uh, and you could probably speak more to that.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: But that's pretty much how it's set up.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, obviously uh if you're playing some of the better teams in Florida, um, you know, you're getting teams that might have 20 Division I players on the team.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: So uh I don't think it's gonna be anything to that effect, but you're gonna get a lot of speed down there.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you're gonna get guys that are physical.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a much probably different offense, I would guess, probably more of a most of them run a lot of spread.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: So I would think it's probably gonna be a wide open offense.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Uh guys running around on defense.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: So um I I think you know, in the last couple years, I think our teams have done fairly well down there.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: DV's done well.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and I wouldn't think anything different of Abington.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: I could see Abington going down there and pulling off an upset and uh coming back on the plane with a win.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Definitely is it's a good opponent.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I think the company that organizes the trip does a pretty good job of finding you know schools of similar side similar size and matchup.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: So I think it's a good matchup.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Uh I've got a former player who coaches out in Florida, so he gives a little bit of insight of kind of where they are in the rankings and kind of what we're up against.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously watch film and you know they got good size, some good athletes.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: And I think the biggest thing coach is you know, our team being focused.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: I like to believe Abenton Heights, you know, had a good practice week.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: You have a different climate, an unfamiliar opponent, long travel.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: It's those things that you normally don't do that you want to see a football team prepared for, you know.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: So make sure they're hydrating all the way up and getting the proper rest and staying focused and not letting, you know, hey, a trip to universal after be a distraction, not letting the heat become a distraction.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: You gotta just tune all that stuff out, let your preparation come in place.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: And then, like you said, our local teams have had a lot of success uh in the past doing that.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: So we'll see what happens this week, coach.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: Hopefully a bounce back week for our local comets.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Uh should be a good one out there in Florida.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: I'll be on the on a plane early tomorrow morning ready for a fun trip.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm I'm always interested uh as a coach, I always found this interesting, but and you'd probably think the same way, but you know, we talk a lot about playing some of these teams with their players, but a lot of those teams don't know how to play against teams from up here either.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Like they're not used to the eye backfield, they're getting in an unbalanced or power kind of football.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: They're more finesse, spread out, uh quick screens, like things like that.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: And I always think uh it's interesting to see, you know, who can kind of adjust the quickest?
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Because I think that's the team that can win.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: So can Abington adjust to their speed and be able to, you know, do what they need to do?
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Uh and the second part of that is can the Florida team, uh Trinity Prep, adjust to what Abington does that maybe they don't see all year.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: So uh I always think that's and it's the same thing that happens like Southern Columbia.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: How many teams run the wing T?
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: So uh Southern Columbia comes at you, you're not sure how to practice against the wing T, you don't see it, and it catches you by surprise.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: So I think a lot of times when these teams play, we worry about the other team, but uh a lot of the teams up here can kind of throw them a little curveball too, because they're definitely not used to seeing that down in Florida.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Hey, we're gonna do our best to represent uh PA in District 2 here and uh show them some Northeast PA football.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to a good one.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Rob Shea, he says comments bounce back.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: I hope so, Rob.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a good one there.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: And uh I see Grace chiming in here as well.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: West Scranton is so back.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: I love the excitement that you know it's good to see a program getting back on track.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: A lot of pride there at West Granton.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Now, coach, around the district, a little bit more rapid fire fire style here.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: There's so many games to go through.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: North Poconot 1-0 1-0 at Scranton 0-1, defending 4-8 champ.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: Coach, how are they gonna fare this week?
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, I see North Pocono probably being 2-0.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Scranton has a lot of young players, uh, new coach, so struggled a little bit last week.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Um, it's gonna take a little while, I think, to for Coach Miles to turn that back around.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: And North Pocono just has too many kids who've uh played a lot of games, I think, to kind of keep in that game.
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: Good point there.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: Scranton's gonna keep chasing that first win, but a tough one this weekend.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: East Strasbourg North, 0-1 at Honesdale, coach.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'll speak a little bit more to this one.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Coach Johanens' Hornets is going for 2-0 after Avenging Wall and Popak, ESU North is coming off a 49 loss, nothing loss to Bangor.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: I think the one inside view I'd ask you for on that game, coach, is you you can't let your guard down.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: I've been in that situation before with teams that have very good records and had what looks like a really good matchup, and you let your guard down, you could be in for surprise.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: What's your take there?
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, we're coming off that big win.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: I just think East Troughtsburg North, new coach, uh, a lot of their players from last year graduated as well, but uh they're very uh unorthodox on defense, kind of send guys from everywhere, which makes me nervous uh from an offensive standpoint.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: So uh they're just one of those teams they got a lot of good athletes and they're not really doing things by the book.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: So uh I get nervous a lot when we play those teams, but hopefully our kids will come to play and we can start the season 2-0.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: Shifting gears, Montrose 1-0 at Susquehanna 0-1.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: I'm still having flashbacks in 1995, Susquehanna, but this one here, the battle for the Bluestone trophy, coach.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: What do we got?
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Who's taking that trophy home?
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, this is gonna be an interesting game, I think.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Montrose uh got a big win last week, Evan Stroll and Sawyer Akema.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, he had two touchdowns.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Um, big win for Montrose.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: New staff, uh Susquehanna struggled a little bit.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: So um I'm gonna take Montrose in this one.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: Hopefully uh they can start the year two and oh.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: I'm glad to see they're uh kind of got the program going back and uh hopefully they can keep it going.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be a fun game to watch on Thursday.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Shifting back to Friday, football Western Wayne 1 0 at Old Forge 0 1.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, you know, Western Wayne I thought did a great job last week.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: They're Very balanced.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: They ran the ball well.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: They passed the ball well.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Old Forge was in their game until the very end.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: So I'm still going to go.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: I'm going to go Western Wayne being 2-0.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: I think they have a lot of firepower, a lot of good guys back from last year's team.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: I just think they're going to be tough for Old Forge to kind of hold down.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Former Scranton Eagle teammate Coach Schubek.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: He he I think he has something different to say.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: He's got to avenge that lead they let slip over.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: I love Coach Schubeck.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: He'll definitely have them ready to play.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: I know that.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: That would be a good one.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: Holy Redeemer 0-1 at Nativity BVM Friday.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: I think there was a big five-touchdown performance last week, Coach.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: What do we got?
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I'm going to take Redeemer in this one.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: I think they're another team.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: They've been down a little bit and they're kind of back.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: They have some guys that have played a lot since they've been freshmen and sophomores.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: So I'm looking for Redeemer to bounce back over Nativity BVM.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Hazleton 0-1 at William Sport at 1-0.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: I like Williams Sport in this game.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: I think Hazleton's a decent team, but William Sport always comes in with, again, physical play, a lot of speed.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: So I'm looking at William Sport there at 2-0.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's going to be a tough job containing Tevin Williams after a 400-yard plus opener.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: That's going to be a big challenge.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Delaware Valley 0-1.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: You know, hey, they took on a really tough Maryland opponent.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: We give a lot of credit for them taking on a tough opponent week one.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Now go to Northampton, who's also a 1-0.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I see this is what I talk about when we do the rankings.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Like Delaware Valley is going to start the year playing two great football teams, right?
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: So uh probably two teams with uh, you know, an ability to beat pretty much anybody in District 2.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, it'll be a tough game against Northampton.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure uh what Northampton has coming back.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: I know they're uh, you know, pretty good team last year.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna take Delaware Valley, though, on this one to bounce back, uh, get back to one-on-one.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Wilkes Bear area 0-1 at Strasbourg 1-0.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is gonna be a tough game.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: I think uh again, it'll be a different battle of offenses.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: Wilkes Bear, a lot of spread.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Strasburg is uh usually more tight uh to the vest, a little bit more, some wing T stuff.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: So uh it'll be tough, I think, with the physicality, especially going to Strasburg.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna take Stralsburg there to be 2-0.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: Well, on Pop Pack 0-1 out of East Strasbourg South, hot after putting 50 points on Pitston.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, East Strasburg South is really good.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, great offense.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I see Strasburg South winning this game.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: I think while in Paw Pack last week, even had a couple guys get dinged up a little bit.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I thought uh sometimes after a physical game like that, you struggle the next week, and they're not playing a bad opponent here.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: So I see uh East Strasburg South winning this one.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: Challenging start for the Pop Pack Boys.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: They just got to keep on battling.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: Trinity Hit Camp Hill 0-1 at Scranton Prep also 0-1.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'll take Prep in this one to bounce back.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be a tough game.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, another close game probably for them, but I think they'll uh figure it out offensively uh and get this thing going and get them on uh, you know, get that first win for this year and be back to one-on-one.
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think prep bounces back there.
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: Just need to find that defensive answer, and hopefully at home, I think they could do that.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: Mid-valley 0-1 at Tunkannock.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is gonna be an interesting game, I think.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, again, different styles.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Tunkanic, uh, a lot of spread, things like that.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Uh Mid Valley can kind of pound it at you.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm interested to see kind of how this, and and you can't base it on last week.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Tunkanic played Dallas, Dallas is a great football team.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, Mid-Vally lost to uh Lake Lehman, but um, I'm gonna take Mid-Vally in this one uh in a close game, I think, because again, differing styles, but I think at the end, um, I just think the power game will be able to take care of Tumkanic.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we talked about teams having to have resiliency.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: Great opportunity for Mid-Valley on the road.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: They're only 0-1.
- 47:47SPEAKER_02: They missed a two-pointer at the end of their game last week.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: You know, hey coaches, offensive coordinators out there, make sure we're practicing those two-point plays and uh have them ready.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, but great opportunity for Mid-Valley to show some resiliency on the road.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: Hanover area, 0-1 at Wyoming area.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: I think this could be the best game of the week.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, Hanover's got a lot of offense, and if Wyoming area has some guys not playing again, uh, I think it'll be interesting.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: But um I just think, again, I'm going back to, like I said, with Dallas.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: I think the pedigree, uh, Wyoming area's been there, done that.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Hanover's kind of an upstart trying to get to that point.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, and you're going to Wyoming area.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: I think it's just a tough place to play at.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to take Wyoming area in this game.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: This should be, this could be the game of the week.
- 48:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, this easily could have been on the feature list.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: Two teams expected to be competitive, both needing to avoid 0-2.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: And Hanover running back Dwayne Downey ran for you know around 150 yards last week, so they they gotta have an answer for him.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Nanacoke 0-1 at Palmerton.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: 1-0.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just think Nanacoke is just struggling.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: I just think they struggle offensively and defensively.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: They've had different coaches for the last couple of years.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: I think that's tough on the kids.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: So uh I'll take Palmerton and this one to go to 2-0.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: Nanokoke just has to keep keep grinding there.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: They're trying to get that first win under a new head coach, as you alluded to, and Joe Shimko.
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: Holy Cross at Riverside.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I just think Riverside way too many athletes.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, Holy Cross had a forfeit last week.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: They only have about 17 to 20 players.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, and again, that doesn't mean you can't win games if you only have 20 players, but uh, I just think Riverside speed and athleticism is gonna be way too much for Holy Cross.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it becomes a numbers game there.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: And hey, with Holy Cross kids, you know, props to you.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: A lot of heart going out there, a little bit shorthanded.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: You gotta be smart and disciplined, and uh we'll we'll see what happens there.
