Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Becoming Conscious of the Multiple Sheaths or Planes of Our Being
Transcript
- 0:02In the Titeria Upanishad, the seeker discovers through
- 0:07intensive tapasya that there are multiple layers or sheaths of
- 0:12consciousness that make up the human being.
- 0:17His seeking first discovers the material body or food sheath.
- 0:22As he continues, he recognizes the vital body or prana sheath.
- 0:28Next, he learns about the mind or mental sheath.
- 0:32He continues to discover the Causal sheath and eventually the
- 0:37bliss sheath. Each one was successively more
- 0:41subtle than the prior one, and each one was more directly
- 0:46capable of causing the actions of the being.
- 0:50These sheets correspond generally to the chakras and
- 0:54their receptivity to energies and forces.
- 0:57That are active in the manifestation generally.
- 1:01Thus we are greatly moved in our thoughts, feelings, actions and
- 1:08responses by these larger forces, which remain, however
- 1:13largely unnoticed by us as they enter through the subtle bodies
- 1:19corresponding to each of these sheets, and we only become aware
- 1:23of them when they are active within us.
- 1:27And we are attending to them in the life divine triobindo
- 1:32describes the sevenfold ignorance within which we exist.
- 1:36We are not aware of the environmental consciousness as
- 1:41well as superconscient, subconscient, and even what we
- 1:45may call the inconscient levels of our existence.
- 1:50We treat the things that we can perceive with our external
- 1:53senses as what is real. And fail to recognize the
- 1:58reality of all the other elements that make up our
- 2:02existence and our relation to the larger universal
- 2:06manifestation, Shriorobindo observes, Quote.
- 2:12Why then are we not normally aware of so much that is behind
- 2:15us and always pressing upon us? For the same reason that we are
- 2:20not aware of the inner life of our neighbor, although it exists
- 2:25as much as our own? And is constantly exercising an
- 2:29occult influence upon us. For a great part of our thoughts
- 2:34and feelings come into us from outside, from our fellow men,
- 2:39both from individuals and from the collective mind of humanity.
- 2:45And for the same reason that we are not aware of the greater
- 2:48part of our own being, which is subconscient or subliminal to
- 2:53our waking mind. And is always influencing and in
- 2:58an occult manner determining our surface existence.
- 3:02It is because we use normally only our corporeal senses and
- 3:08live almost wholly in the body and the physical vitality and
- 3:13the physical mind. And it is not directly through
- 3:16these that the life world enters into relations with us, that is
- 3:21done through other sheaths of our being.
- 3:25So they are termed in the Upanishads other bodies, as they
- 3:29are called in a later terminology, the mental sheath
- 3:33or subtle body, in which our true mental being lives, and the
- 3:37life sheath or vital body, which is more closely connected with
- 3:42the physical or food sheath, and forms with it the gross body of
- 3:47our complex existence. These possess powers, senses,
- 3:53capacities. Which are always secretly acting
- 3:57in us, are connected with and impinge upon our physical organs
- 4:03and the plexuses of our physical life and mentality.
- 4:08By self development we can become aware of them, possess
- 4:12our life in them, get through them into conscious relation
- 4:16with the life world and other worlds, and use them also for a
- 4:21more subtle experience. And more intimate knowledge of
- 4:25the truths, facts and happenings of even the material world
- 4:31itself. We can by this self development
- 4:35live more or less fully on the plains of our existence other
- 4:39than the material which is now All in all to us.
