- 0:11It's almost difficult to stop the worship because it's so
- 0:16powerful today to reflect on the Incarnation of the Son of God.
- 0:20So thankful for the worship, team for the children, for the
- 0:24choir, that will be singing after the message.
- 0:26We're so thankful for all the practice and the prayers that
- 0:28have gone into this to this meeting.
- 0:31And oftentimes the Christmas time service is focused and
- 0:35planned around being Evangelistic.
- 0:37You know, there are people that come to church Come to church
- 0:40only for this time of the year and maybe Easter if they feel
- 0:43like it. But I'm praying that this
- 0:46morning or this afternoon. Rather this service would be a
- 0:49Revival. Not just Evangelistic but it
- 0:52would be a Revival in our hearts and so I praise God that were
- 0:56able to sing around the truth and the the revelation of God
- 0:59becoming a man and what might even encourage you more.
- 1:03This afternoon is that this idea this tradition of the people of
- 1:07God coming together and Focusing on this one aspect of what our
- 1:12God has done and who he is, is not something that the church
- 1:15has developed over the years. No, it's actually something that
- 1:20was expressed and experienced at the actual event.
- 1:25Meaning there are people singing and rejoicing and blessing God
- 1:31right there and then when Christ was made known as a child.
- 1:37And so all we're doing today is what we see in the scriptures
- 1:40all were doing is We are continuing what was exemplified
- 1:44in the Bible that when there are those a certain group there are
- 1:47different individual who had the privilege of understanding that
- 1:51this child is no ordinary Jewish child.
- 1:54He is, in fact, God coming to this world.
- 1:58Oh, they adored him. They adored him.
- 2:02And the purpose of this meeting together is that we would look
- 2:04at one of the Spirit. Led Outburst of adoration
- 2:08concerning a man who was exposed who is given that wonderful
- 2:13opportunity to realize that this is, in fact, the Christ.
- 2:17And so I encourage you today with your Bibles to turn with me
- 2:20to the Gospel of Luke in chapter 2.
- 2:24And since this past Friday, we dedicated our meeting to unpack.
- 2:29The supernatural birth of Jesus Christ.
- 2:32This afternoon, we will look at And consider the Adoration of
- 2:37the Child, Jesus at his dedication. so, as you're there,
- 2:43in the Gospel of Luke, please meet me in verse 20, 22, And we
- 2:57read here in the Gospel of Luke and Luke's telling of the early
- 3:02days of Jesus in verse 22. And when the time came for the
- 3:07purification according to the law of Moses, they being Joseph
- 3:12and Mary brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the
- 3:15Lord as it is written in the law of the Lord.
- 3:18Every male, who first opens the womb Shall be Called, holy to
- 3:21the Lord and to offer a sacrifice according to what is
- 3:25said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young
- 3:29pigeons. Now, there was a man in
- 3:32Jerusalem whose name was Simeon and this man was righteous.
- 3:35And devout waiting for the consolation of Israel.
- 3:39And the Holy Spirit was upon him and had been revealed to him by
- 3:43the holy spirit that he would not see death before he had seen
- 3:46the Lord's Christ and he came in the spirit into the temple.
- 3:52And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus to do for him
- 3:55according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms
- 3:59and blessed. God and said, Lord now you are
- 4:03letting your servant depart in peace according Ting to your
- 4:06word. For my eyes have seen your
- 4:09salvation that you have prepared in the presence of All Peoples,
- 4:13a light for Revelation to the Gentiles and for Glory to your
- 4:17People Israel. The first couple of verses of
- 4:21our text today. I have a feeling that a lot of
- 4:24people would be tempted to ignore such details and move on
- 4:28in order to get to the meat of the matter.
- 4:31But when we read, what we see here in verse 22 to verse 24,
- 4:34about the, the legal parents of Jesus, coming into the temple
- 4:38with that child in their arms to perform a specific Duty.
- 4:44We have to be a people that believe that every inclusion in
- 4:48the scripture, Is meant for our instruction and for Revelation
- 4:52every part of the Bible, God waste no ink God wastes, no
- 4:57Pages, God waste, no sections. And as we come to this, we
- 5:02realize that Joseph and Mary want to come to the house of God
- 5:06and it wasn't a spontaneous decision.
- 5:09It wasn't something that they wanted to do like some Christian
- 5:12parents today do after they have a child.
- 5:14We want to dedicate our child to the Lord and they figure out a
- 5:18perfect. I mean they organized it and
- 5:20it's a beautiful celebration. No no no this isn't spontaneous.
- 5:25This is according to the law. This was demanded of them.
- 5:30This was an observance of an ordinance.
- 5:33And this ordinance is found in an unfairly treated book in the
- 5:37Bible, and that's the Book of Leviticus.
- 5:41And in that book, we read that God has given certain ceremonial
- 5:44instructions and certain laws for the Civil Life of the nation
- 5:48of Israel. Which is why many Believers when
- 5:51they attempt to read through the Bible, find very little
- 5:56motivation to pull through and Leviticus but I want to show you
- 6:01today why it's important that you and I cannot afford to miss
- 6:04out on even one part of the Bible because I want you to see
- 6:07just as an example, how we forfeit Revelation when we do
- 6:10that. We forfeit the harmony of the
- 6:12Bible, when we see things connect from one book to the
- 6:16other and then we believe that scripture interprets scripture.
- 6:19Do we not? And so we realize that there's a
- 6:23section in The Book of Leviticus that is targeted towards
- 6:26parents. And there's a protocol that they
- 6:28were called to observe once they gave birth to either a boy or a
- 6:32girl. And if it was a boy then those
- 6:36parents have to Faithfully circumcised that boy on the
- 6:39Eighth Day, many people speculate why the eighth day if
- 6:43you want to go the science Rebel scientists believe that the
- 6:46eighth day is the best day concerning bleeding and
- 6:50infection being the Just consequential thing that would
- 6:53occur but if you want to go in the biblical understanding, the
- 6:57number eight means new beginning and we realize that there's new
- 7:00life New Beginning here. But why circumcisions you know
- 7:04what I hope circumcision because number one that thing would be a
- 7:09symbol. It was a marked a national
- 7:11identity of Israel in order for them to be able to rehearse and
- 7:15remember that they have made a covenant with the true and
- 7:18living God that was established with their other Abraham.
- 7:23But secondly circumcision because it was also an
- 7:26illustration. It was a demonstration It was a
- 7:31foreshadowing of the circumcising of the heart.
- 7:36That God would perform at Salvation.
- 7:39And it was in a sense, a cutting away of the flesh, a removal of
- 7:44the flesh. A work, a surgery to be done on
- 7:47the human nature because we've inherited Adam sinned.
- 7:51And so as they would circumcise their sons, it was to foreshadow
- 7:55what God has said many times in the Old Testament, circumcise
- 7:59your hearts Circumciser. Let there be a surgery done on
- 8:04your soul. So, even that act had a
- 8:08spiritual meaning. And as Jesus was coming into the
- 8:15world. He was granted parents that
- 8:18obeyed God. God chose these parents knowing
- 8:22that they would obey God. but after the circumcision, That
- 8:28mother would have to weigh 33 days, aren't you?
- 8:30Glad you're in the New Covenant. 33 days where she could not
- 8:36touch anything. Holy and she cannot enter into
- 8:39the sanctuary of the Lord. And those days were known as the
- 8:42days of purification, she would have to be purified.
- 8:45Why? Because not only was the child
- 8:50in that act of circumcision being told to the parents, and
- 8:55to this nation, that it has a sin nature, but also the mother
- 9:00herself need to be reminded that she needs to be cleansed as
- 9:03well. And so she would be in that
- 9:06state of days of purification. And after those days were
- 9:09completed, turn your Bibles to Leviticus chapter 12.
- 9:15In verse 6. We read in, Leviticus 12, verse
- 9:226. And when the days of her
- 9:24purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she
- 9:30shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting
- 9:33a lamb, a year old, for a burnt offering, and a pigeon, or a
- 9:37turtle dove for a sin offering. So, at the end of those days,
- 9:42she would have to come and she would have to honor a ceremony
- 9:46that would symbolize her purification.
- 9:49It would Eliza a sin offering there is an atonement for her
- 9:53sin and she would bring this child to dedicate him to the
- 9:56Lord. But it's in verse 8 where we see
- 9:58how this connects with what we just read in Luke verse 8, and
- 10:04if she can't afford a lamb, Then she shall take two turtledoves
- 10:09or two, pigeons one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin
- 10:12offering and the priest shall make atonement for her.
- 10:16And she shall be clean. See what happens when you miss
- 10:20Leviticus What do we read earlier in?
- 10:23Luke Chapter 2, we read that Joseph and Mary came into the
- 10:26temple. And what did they bring?
- 10:29Did they bring a lamb? No.
- 10:31No they brought two. Pigeons.
- 10:36Revealing to us that they were not a wealthy couple, they can
- 10:41only afford the very bare minimum of their offering to the
- 10:43Lord. And you would think that if this
- 10:46child, that's coming to the ceremony to be dedicated to
- 10:50Lord, if this child is really God himself.
- 10:54That there would be something prepared, the greatest offering
- 10:58that you can offer on behalf of this child and the parents that
- 11:02would supervise them in his Humanity.
- 11:04But no God chose to Crown this young couple with the honor to
- 11:11be able to raise the Son of God in his Humanity because our king
- 11:17is not attracted to wealth. And he is not attracted to fame
- 11:23and he's not attracted to Ability what draws the heart of
- 11:27God is a heart of obedience. Is a heart that really Revere's
- 11:32him and loves him and fears him. And God saw this couple and, and
- 11:38he recruited this couple and part.
- 11:40Yes. Because of his Sovereign will
- 11:41but because he saw a couple that were willing to obey even in the
- 11:45smallest of things. This is what draws God's heart.
- 11:50This is more valuable and precious to him than mountains
- 11:53of gold or palaces of pearls or Prestige or pedigree.
- 11:59Just a simple heart that loves his word just a humble hard that
- 12:04honors his commands and God could entrust this couple with
- 12:08the great privilege because he saw in them a willful surrender
- 12:12to the word and that's all he required.
- 12:16Can you visualize it this afternoon?
- 12:19This precious beautiful young virgin.
- 12:22With the Child Jesus press on her chest.
- 12:26Protecting him with whatever strength she had, while her
- 12:29husband was walking on her side with two pigeons in his hands.
- 12:34And all people on that day who might have walked by or seen
- 12:38them would have known. According to the law will,
- 12:40here's a poor couple just trying to do their best to honor God.
- 12:45They couldn't afford a lamb, so they brought to birds.
- 12:50But they did have a lamb. They were the richest people
- 12:56there. He is God in his wisdom in his
- 13:01design, made sure that they would come in with two pigeons
- 13:04because they were holding the Lamb of God.
- 13:08The Lamb of God, who would come and put an end to all the
- 13:10ceremonial laws that could never cleanse the Lamb of God.
- 13:14Who would come in to make one sacrifice that body that was
- 13:19prepared? That would Usher in a New
- 13:22Covenant in which we don't have to rehearse these things, but
- 13:26look back and by faith, connect to that blood and it be applied
- 13:30to us though. They did have a lamb.
- 13:34But it was the Lamb of God. and as they came into that place on
- 13:40the surface of the site, most of those people in there could not
- 13:44understand what was occurring, but we see through the
- 13:48scriptures that we have commentary and what was
- 13:50happening. Let me emphasize this again.
- 13:53This afternoon, God in his perfect wisdom selected Mary and
- 13:58Joseph because they were surrendered vessels, that's all
- 14:01it was and you see from his infancy.
- 14:04Jesus Christ wanted to and needed to fulfill the law by
- 14:09willing to go through all of this.
- 14:12Jesus Christ, didn't need to be circumcised, an infant.
- 14:15Like the other Jewish kids had to there was no cleansing
- 14:19needed. There was no sin nature to
- 14:21cover, but Jesus Christ through the surveillance of these
- 14:25parents underwent even that, because even from his infancy he
- 14:29identified with Sinners just like why Jesus Christ got
- 14:33baptized people wonder, it was a baptism of repentance if Christ
- 14:36is perfect. Why did he allow John to baptize
- 14:39him? Well to identify with sinners.
- 14:42Fulfill the law. And the same way you get
- 14:46baptized in order to identify with Christ Christ, got baptized
- 14:49to identify with you. And here he is willing to go
- 14:56undergo circumcision. Willing to go through the
- 14:58ceremonial purification. Why not?
- 15:00Because he needed it. But because he identified with
- 15:02us, he was obeying God perfectly even from those years and God in
- 15:12his wisdom, selected to parents to make it happen.
- 15:16And what's a beautiful here is by this simple.
- 15:18Obedience, Mary. And Joseph are about to meet a
- 15:23man. Are about to face someone who is
- 15:28going to further. Glorify Christ.
- 15:32The simple thing of observance, the simple thing of circumcising
- 15:36and going through the ceremonial law, I'm sure they did not have
- 15:41it in mind that it would lead to this Christ being further,
- 15:45praise and adorned with Glory because that's what's about to
- 15:49happen. And I believe that is for
- 15:51instruction. It is for our instruction today,
- 15:55don't you? Dare minimize, and don't you
- 15:57dare be little small acts of sacrifice and small acts of
- 16:01obedience. You just may be walking into
- 16:04something that will further glorify Christ.
- 16:07As this couple would. And we read here, haven't we in
- 16:11verse 25? That there is a man in Jerusalem
- 16:15whose name was Simeon. And all were told about him, is
- 16:19that he was righteous and devout.
- 16:21What a description for a man. Righteous and devout.
- 16:26Why is God telling us this about this man?
- 16:29Because he would qualify as an appropriate witness about this
- 16:34baby. He would qualify someone who
- 16:36would be able to have authority to say this child is no ordinary
- 16:40child. He's a light to the Gentiles.
- 16:41He's the glory of Israel. And so, this men of good repute
- 16:45would be given the opportunity to testify of this baby and
- 16:50prophesy over this child, and his mother.
- 16:54But more importantly, we're told not just that he was righteous
- 16:56and devout, but he was waiting for the consolation of Israel.
- 17:01I pray that this point would revive you.
- 17:05I pray that this point would shake you out of your
- 17:07lukewarmness. I pray that this point would
- 17:10awaken you from the familiarity of the celebration.
- 17:15Waiting for the consolation of Israel that waiting speaks of
- 17:18expectation and desire. This man Simeon God sought to to
- 17:24write about him out of all the things that he too, could have
- 17:26wrote about him. That there is something in him
- 17:28that consumed them and it was the longing and the waiting for
- 17:32the Messiah to enter in. And to bring restoration to his
- 17:36people, the Solace, the piece, the rest, and I'm sure Simeon in
- 17:42light of the Roman oppression of his day, had a greater ache for
- 17:46the things that he's learned ever since he was a child and
- 17:49the things that he has studied in the Scrolls of the scriptures
- 17:52to come about in his own lifetime.
- 17:54I want to see the Messiah come. This was the beat of his heart.
- 18:00This was his dream in the night. This is a theme of his
- 18:03conversation. The Bible tells us by the
- 18:06spirit, Simeon was a man who are waiting for the consolation of
- 18:10Israel. Why do you think God wrote that
- 18:13for us to know? Why do you think God included
- 18:17this? I believe one reason is because
- 18:20God looks at our desires. He looks at what we desire and
- 18:25he honors US based on what he discovers about them.
- 18:31Because you got many Christians today that are old Covenant
- 18:34Believers that are so focused on the outward that they don't
- 18:37think God can see beyond your bone, and your skin, and your
- 18:41words and your hands and your money.
- 18:45Jesus came not to lighten up the law, he intensified it.
- 18:48You think that your holy because you didn't commit adultery with
- 18:51your body if you've done in your mind, you've already done it in
- 18:54your heart. Oh, you're not a murder, that's
- 18:56why you don't deserve hell. Yeah.
- 18:57You are a murderer. If you've hated your brother and
- 18:59you're angry at him for no reason, God saw this desire.
- 19:05He didn't just see the righteousness and his devotion.
- 19:07He saw his desire. He saw his affections.
- 19:12An impressed. God, it moved God, the Holy
- 19:16Spirit. Included it here about this man.
- 19:20And if you're not convinced today that God sees this and God
- 19:23honors us and God does Things based on this, then go to the
- 19:27gospel of Mark and I want you to see another man and the gospel
- 19:30of Mark chapter 15. Be convinced today of the
- 19:37consistent character of God. And Mark 1543, we read of
- 19:42another man and this man was not at the infant stages of Jesus
- 19:47Christ. This man was at the death of
- 19:49Jesus Christ. And we are told and Mark 1543
- 19:55Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council who was
- 20:01also himself looking for the kingdom of God.
- 20:07To courage and went to pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
- 20:11Oh, here's another man. A man who is perhaps different
- 20:14age different class. Different opportunities,
- 20:19different accomplishments. One thing in common with Simeon,
- 20:22they both long for the kingdom of God.
- 20:26They both longed for see this man.
- 20:28Are you a member of some important Council this
- 20:31afternoon? Are you someone special?
- 20:33Do you have you have letters after your name?
- 20:35Welcome. You have great.
- 20:38Great digits in your bank account.
- 20:39Welcome, we're told in Matthew that this man was rich welcome,
- 20:44but I want to ask you today. Does your position distract you.
- 20:47There's your wealth fog, your interpretation of life.
- 20:52This man had position this man had wealth this man had respect,
- 20:57but this man, the eyes of his heart were set on the kingdom.
- 21:00He longed for it, he yearned for it, he desired it and I see
- 21:06Simeon, when Jesus was six weeks old and we read that he was able
- 21:13to hold the Messiah. And I see Joseph.
- 21:20At the prime of this messiah's life slain holding his body.
- 21:27And even given the privilege of fulfilling that prophecy in
- 21:30Isaiah, where the grave of this Messiah would be shared with a
- 21:33rich man's tomb. I see it here.
- 21:38I see that God saw two men and he saw their affections, he saw
- 21:41their passions, and he honored them.
- 21:46To come so close to his son to hold such great reward and
- 21:50responsibility for this son. Maybe you're not convinced,
- 21:56maybe you're not convinced, maybe, maybe we got to do more
- 21:59to get out of the mechanical Christianity, that plagues
- 22:02America this afternoon. So let's do it in the book of
- 22:06Hebrews chapter 11, we read something quite amazing about
- 22:08how God views desires and in Hebrews 11 16 and not Hall of
- 22:15Faith. After speaking about the
- 22:18Patriarchs, we read in verse 16 of Hebrews 11 But as it is, they
- 22:25desire a better country. They desire a better country.
- 22:30That is a Heavenly one. Therefore not pause.
- 22:34Pause. Therefore whenever you see the
- 22:37word therefore, ask the question.
- 22:39What is there for there for What is therefore, therefore, and
- 22:45therefore, as there as what we just heard, as a result of what
- 22:48we just heard that because certain men had a desire for a
- 22:53Heavenly country. Desire does not say desire.
- 22:58Desire. The same word used and First
- 23:01Timothy 3:1 where it says, if any one aspires to be an
- 23:05overseer, he desires a noble task, it's a desire.
- 23:10So intense that you want to see it come to reality that you want
- 23:14to see it. Manifests the same word, the
- 23:16same way. A man who desires to be an
- 23:18elder, who desires to be a pastor.
- 23:20Who desires to fulfill that same word?
- 23:24These people had another Faith, you believe in heaven.
- 23:26Wonderful. You believe that you're going to
- 23:29heaven, great. It's not talking about faith,
- 23:31it's talking about longing. Yearning.
- 23:38Are you treading lightly in this world brothers and sisters?
- 23:44Are you treading lightly? They desire a better country.
- 23:49Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God for, he has
- 23:56prepared for them a city. Based on desire.
- 24:03Based on affection, based on passion God, who sees what our
- 24:09desires are set on when he sees his children, who desire, his
- 24:13kingdom to come his rule to be known his dwelling to be with,
- 24:19man. He says, I'm not ashamed to be
- 24:23called their God. Can you imagine a greater gift
- 24:27than that? That in the presence of Angel
- 24:29host and Heavenly Creatures that if you were to see them, you
- 24:32would probably melt out of fear. He can say, I'm not ashamed to
- 24:37be called his God. I'm not embarrassed to be called
- 24:44her God. So desire alone magnetizes God
- 24:51in a certain way, this shows that he's personal, this shows
- 24:55that he's real. This shows that he actually
- 24:57cares about what you feel and what you think and what you
- 25:00desire, and what you dream about oh that God would find in us a
- 25:04desire for a Heavenly country. Oh, that God would be able to
- 25:08save Maranatha Bible Church? I am not ashamed to be
- 25:11associated with this church, because they desire is not
- 25:15wonderful. It's nothing to do with
- 25:16performance. Nothing to do with how great of
- 25:20a minister you are, how powerful your preaching is.
- 25:22No one simple thing. That Woos his heart, your
- 25:25desire. This man.
- 25:30Simeon had a desire. He waited for the consolation of
- 25:34Israel. And then we are told That the
- 25:38Holy Spirit had revealed to him. I mean, this is a unique
- 25:43privilege, the Holy Spirit had revealed to him.
- 25:46That he was not going to die until he would see the Messiah.
- 25:53Now I can't imagine how this altered his life, we're not told
- 25:57when the Holy Spirit told him this but even if it was a week
- 26:01before I'm sure that week look different from every other week.
- 26:07Can you imagine what it would be like?
- 26:08This is what you longed for your whole life.
- 26:11This is what you desired. As early as you can even imagine
- 26:18and all for sudden, somehow some way the Holy Spirit reveals to
- 26:21Simeon audibly, we don't know how Simeon.
- 26:26You will not die. Until you see the Messiah.
- 26:34What do those mornings look like?
- 26:36As he woke up in his bed? Is it today?
- 26:38Lord is it today? Well, I see him today.
- 26:43Will he enter in today? Will you were to me be fulfilled
- 26:45today. When will it come?
- 26:47Is it now? God left them in that
- 26:51spontaneous state, but assured by one thing, this man was not
- 26:55going to die. Even if all of Hell came against
- 26:57him, even if Rome came against him, he was not going to die
- 27:03until he saw the Messiah and one day, something happens,
- 27:07something marvelous he wakes up. And there's a strange sense of
- 27:12the leading of God in an unusual way.
- 27:16And there is the sense in which he had to go to the temple and
- 27:20God's leading was so perfect. That every step, every
- 27:24Interruption on the way, whatever took place was
- 27:28perfectly orchestrated by the spirit of God for him to arrive
- 27:33at the moment, where he would see Mary and Joseph with the
- 27:36Messiah in their arms. I read that this morning and I
- 27:41thought to myself, Lord, won't you just lead me like that?
- 27:46All the experiences. I would know the time that I
- 27:48would save the energy, all these things that could be reserved
- 27:51that you can just speak to me. So clearly and tell me, get up
- 27:55and go stop, no, yes, maybe, no, I need it, I want it.
- 27:59Why just Simeon. I'm sure there's an innocent.
- 28:04See about that. That God honors.
- 28:07But I'm also refreshed to know here that there is another
- 28:10person in the same Temple. Who did not have the same
- 28:16experience as Simian leading up to this moment but she did have
- 28:21the same blessing of realizing the Messiah.
- 28:25Another woman, older woman, her name is Anna.
- 28:28We're often familiar with henna, but this is Anna.
- 28:31Another Prophet s. She's found in the same chapter
- 28:34here and all were told about Anna, is that she was a
- 28:38prophetess, she was a widow, she only had seven With her husband
- 28:44before her husband died. Tragedy.
- 28:48Heartbreaking. And we are told here in Luke 237
- 28:52about Anna. and then, as a widow, until she was 84, She did
- 28:59not depart from the temple worshiping with fasting and
- 29:02prayer night and day. I love that because I see a
- 29:06woman who experienced the tragedy early in her marriage.
- 29:10She lost the love of her life. And I'm sure that shattered, her
- 29:14dreams and her hopes of living long and old with her husband.
- 29:20And yet this woman. Did not have bitterness in her
- 29:24heart against God did not walk away from the house of God.
- 29:29Did not say this prayer thing doesn't work when I prayed for
- 29:32my husband while he was sick. God didn't hear me?
- 29:35No, she devoted herself more to God.
- 29:39She came to the house of God daily and she prayed and she
- 29:42fasted, and she was a worshipper and elderly woman.
- 29:47Not a princess, not a queen, not a beauty.
- 29:51Pageant winner and elderly woman who, lost her husband who just
- 29:56devoted herself to the house of God even more After a tragedy.
- 30:03And she comes here and she worships God.
- 30:07And there's an interesting phrase in verse 38 and coming up
- 30:12at that very hour. She began to give thanks to God
- 30:17and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the Redemption
- 30:20of Jerusalem. Did you see the phrase?
- 30:23And coming up at that very hour, the King James would say at that
- 30:28instance. What are you seeing there?
- 30:33Not wasted words. My brother and my sister what
- 30:36you are seeing there is the Providence of God.
- 30:42Simeon was led by the spirit to go to the temple, in a very
- 30:45Supernatural real and Rahway. Anna was led to the temple.
- 30:52By Providence, just another day, going to the temple.
- 30:58Just another day to go worship my God, just another day to
- 31:00pray. Just another day too fast.
- 31:03But on this day it would be an extraordinary day.
- 31:08She came up at that very moment where Simeon and that couple met
- 31:13and we're Simeon. Grab that child and praise God,
- 31:16and prophesied over him. And guess who was there to hear
- 31:19all about it, Anna? Maybe that doesn't move you but
- 31:26be encouraged to know that this is how God often leads his
- 31:28people. Do you want God's Providence to
- 31:32be in favor of your life in the New Year?
- 31:34Can I encourage you to do something be devout?
- 31:40Be serious, about the things of God.
- 31:43Be consistent in your walk with Christ.
- 31:46You want Providence in your favor, love him, no matter what
- 31:49he takes from you. Serve him.
- 31:52No matter who doesn't serve him? Don't let disappointment in
- 31:56life. Don't let heartache, don't let
- 31:58betrayal, don't let things in life make you waver, I believe,
- 32:03and we can debate it over lunch. I believe that.
- 32:06God honored, Anna, because Anna honored, God, call me
- 32:10legalistic. All you want.
- 32:14This woman was devout and God saw this woman and he Allowed by
- 32:18his, providential leading to have an exposure that the priest
- 32:22in the same Temple did not have. That the high priest did not
- 32:27have. if you desire to God's Providence, Give him your
- 32:34undivided devotion and watch him lead your life in spectacular
- 32:39ways. What's amazing about Simeon
- 32:44here? Is that by the Holy Spirit?
- 32:49He was led. And he comes here and let's read
- 32:52it. One more time and verse 27, he
- 32:55came in the spirit into the temple, and when the parents
- 32:58brought in the Child Jesus to do for him according to the custom
- 33:01of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed.
- 33:05God and said, can you imagine it?
- 33:07Simeon is blessing God while he's holding God, what a
- 33:09thought. Simeon is worshiping God while
- 33:14he's holding God. Behold the humility of God.
- 33:20Behold The Wonder of this moment.
- 33:23And we see here that he was able to bless God, that was his first
- 33:28response is first. Reaction was to worship.
- 33:30God was to worship. I pray that you came this
- 33:33afternoon to worship, God to worship God, and let of the
- 33:36Revelation, that he became a little baby.
- 33:40And guess what? If you're here today?
- 33:42Because it's Christmas and you have to be here, And because
- 33:47it's tradition and that's what traditionalist do.
- 33:51But you're not here. Because you're moved by the
- 33:54revelation of what Christ has done.
- 33:57Then I want to encourage you today that what you need is what
- 33:59Simeon had and that was the Holy Spirit controlling his mind and
- 34:02his heart. That's what you need and that's
- 34:05what I need. Every time this heart is able to
- 34:09grow cold and doll with any truth concerning Christ.
- 34:13Even as Incarnation, I need the Holy Spirit to fall upon me
- 34:17afresh. Because he was able to bless
- 34:21God. And this is one of the most
- 34:23incredible things because he declares one of the most
- 34:25complete Prophecies of Christ before he even became a man,
- 34:29think about this before Christ, uttered one Miracle before, he
- 34:33uttered one Parable before he done one miraculous Supernatural
- 34:37thing before before any sermon he heard.
- 34:43He understood the gospel and its completion.
- 34:47He understood the work in the extent of what Christ would do.
- 34:52He had a revelation and an insight to the work of Jesus
- 34:55Christ that no average Jew had that no priest?
- 34:59Had that no Rabbi had because what what Simeon had in this
- 35:04moment is what you and I need every single day and that's the
- 35:07leading work of the spirit. The Holy Spirit was his teacher.
- 35:12The Holy Spirit was the one who opened his mind and his eyes to
- 35:15Christ. It is.
- 35:16No wonder that the holy spirit is known as the gift of God.
- 35:22What talk about gifts today? You want to gift?
- 35:25Ask for a greater feeling of the Holy Spirit.
- 35:28Because I'm going to tell you today, doesn't matter what
- 35:30Seminary you go to doesn't matter what preachers, you sit
- 35:33under it doesn't matter how many books you buy and how many
- 35:36highlighters you go through those books unless you have the
- 35:39Holy Spirit, you will be nothing but a traditionalist void of
- 35:44True. Praise and void of true
- 35:45revelation. Because with Simeon hot in this
- 35:50moment and the temple. Is what many people fail to have
- 35:54in that. Very same Temple.
- 35:56He saw what other people could not see because he had what they
- 35:59did not have the enabling work of the spirit of God.
- 36:04So, the Holy Spirit reveals this to him.
- 36:07And now he begins to open his mouth after He blesses.
- 36:09God, he took him up in his arms and blessed, God and said, 29.
- 36:14Lord. Now you are letting your servant
- 36:16depart in peace. According to your word.
- 36:19This man holding this child. I don't know if he looked up.
- 36:23I don't know if you looked into the eyes of that little baby.
- 36:27But he began as the first thing out of his mouth To Boldly
- 36:32declare the faithfulness of God. That's what he said.
- 36:36The first thing he was able to say is God keeps his word. no
- 36:42matter if it's declared to the whole human race, Or even if it
- 36:47was promises concerning one, people group through the Psalms
- 36:50through the prophets, through the law or even if he promises
- 36:54one man about a thing concerning his own life.
- 36:58God keeps his word. You said it Lord and it came to
- 37:03past here is your promise for Israel, here is the light for
- 37:08the Gentiles and here is your goodness and your faithfulness
- 37:11to me, I can now die. I can now die.
- 37:17He is faithful. He's perfect.
- 37:21He never never disappoints. He's wonderful.
- 37:26His character is immovable. He is trustworthy.
- 37:30He is your stability in mine. And we see that Simeon declares
- 37:35that but notice also that Simeon even expresses his Readiness to
- 37:39depart in peace. I'm ready to go.
- 37:42I'm ready to go. I'm ready to go because I've
- 37:47seen the Messiah. I have seen your salvation.
- 37:50You can call me home. Now God I believe that this
- 37:55verse hints at the satisfaction that Jesus brings into a life.
- 38:03Simeon here receives a, a glimpse of the Messiah.
- 38:07He's not going to see the restoration of the nation of
- 38:10Israel. He's not going to see the
- 38:12Revival among the Gentiles. I would come in and bow before
- 38:15this Messiah. All he is seen, is a glimpse of
- 38:19the Salvation of God and it's so moved his heart.
- 38:23It's so filled his soul that he is essentially saying, life has
- 38:28nothing more to give to me. I'm ready to go.
- 38:34I wonder if that's what you feel about your relationship with
- 38:36Christ. Take Christ away, there's no
- 38:41life to live. Give me Christ.
- 38:45And I have all. This man is saying, I've seen
- 38:49Christ. I've seen the Salvation.
- 38:51I'm ready to go into Glory. I'm so blessed.
- 38:55I am so filled with hope and joy, and peace that I'm ready to
- 39:00depart now, Because I want you to be reminded Christmas.
- 39:07Is not just about Jesus. Life is about Jesus.
- 39:11The theme of Our Song is Jesus. The theme of our Salvation is
- 39:16Jesus. The theme of Heaven is Jesus.
- 39:19The theme of your satisfaction is Jesus.
- 39:23Nothing else. And if it is anything else, I
- 39:27pity you this afternoon because all I see is a desperate man.
- 39:31A desperate woman drinking at a filthy water because you're
- 39:34going to a broken cistern that's promising.
- 39:37You something that will never ever ever satisfy.
- 39:41This man was So Satisfied. I just decide of the infancy of
- 39:44the Messiah that he said, take my life because I have now lived
- 39:48I have now lived and the psalmist said, whom have I in
- 39:52heaven but you and there is nothing on Earth.
- 39:55I desire besides you he's the theme in heaven.
- 39:57He's anathema Earth. You Heaven is about you.
- 40:01Earth is about you. The person just the person of
- 40:06Jesus Christ. Let me say it again.
- 40:09He was not rejoicing here because he saw something
- 40:12happened. No, no.
- 40:13Just the person of Jesus alone, satisfied.
- 40:19Is that true for you Christian? Where are your desires this
- 40:23afternoon? Are you bored right now?
- 40:29Is this not moving you? What are your plans for the new
- 40:34year that is Christ? Included there?
- 40:36Or did you get your fire insurance and you're going to
- 40:38heaven? This man's Simeon, bless God.
- 40:43Bless God to the degree that he says.
- 40:45You can kill me now and I can welcome death with a smile.
- 40:49Because I'm So Satisfied With This Moment.
- 40:55And because Simian has this revelation.
- 41:01The parents, the legal parents of Jesus are going to react in a
- 41:04way but just for the sake of seeing in a verse 31 he goes on
- 41:08to say that you have prepared in the presence of All Peoples, a
- 41:11light for Revelation to the Gentiles and for Glory to your
- 41:14People, Israel, there's the gospel.
- 41:17Jesus, own disciples. How to go through.
- 41:21So much to understand. The fact that Gentiles can be
- 41:25saved, they had to have Council meetings about it.
- 41:29And yet Simeon In This Moment, understood it, he saw it, he
- 41:32knew it because the Holy Spirit does that he heals your
- 41:35thinking? He does such an incredible
- 41:37Supernatural thing in US. We celebrate the fact that the
- 41:42Holy Spirit can make nothing into something.
- 41:45He can bring God and do some weaving work into a random
- 41:50woman. Create flesh.
- 41:52They're not interfering with the Divine element of who God is.
- 41:56But the miracle doesn't stop there in the Incarnation.
- 41:58God, the Holy Spirit can do a work in you.
- 42:01He can do a work in me, he can create something in us, he can
- 42:05change us, he can heal us, he can renew us.
- 42:11And I want you to see the reaction of these parents and
- 42:14verse 33. And his father and his mother
- 42:19marveled at what was said about him.
- 42:25They marveled. They were an all.
- 42:28They were stunned. May be stunned by the fact that
- 42:32this random man. Is saying such things about
- 42:36their boy, because their reaction here, interjects and
- 42:40simeon's about to go on to prophesy, which we're not going
- 42:44to touch this afternoon. I just want to park right here
- 42:47as we close with this application.
- 42:51They see, they hear and they Marvel.
- 42:55Can I ask you something? Is this the first time that
- 42:58they've heard something about this son?
- 43:02Is this the first time that they receive Revelation?
- 43:05No. No, they've received Angelic
- 43:08visitation. No, no Joseph has received
- 43:12dreams. Shepherd's have come to announce
- 43:17something of this birth. This is not the first time that
- 43:22they heard about, who this baby is and what this baby will
- 43:25accomplish. But you know what, they still
- 43:28marveled. Are you marveling today or is
- 43:31this all familiar to you? You got used to, right?
- 43:39It's just common knowledge now, right?
- 43:42Another year, another Christmas service.
- 43:46Another sermon. Maybe this time.
- 43:47We'll cry. Maybe he'll move us.
- 43:49Emotionally. Maybe the worship will be
- 43:51better. I just have one question for you
- 43:54today. Do you still Marvel?
- 43:59Are you still in awe? This couple who had already seen
- 44:05so much up to this point, could still lose their breath.
- 44:09Could still lose. Their sleep could still worship
- 44:11and, and give God glory, even though this is not the first
- 44:16time they heard it. That's why I'm saying this today
- 44:21because of what I said earlier, in the announcements, my prayer
- 44:24for this morning service or this afternoon, rather is that we
- 44:27would be revived. Into the new year.
- 44:34I don't want to be able to hear a message about it and I'm sure
- 44:37there is a responsibility upon the preacher to be filled with
- 44:40the Holy Spirit and to expound on the text as a man who is
- 44:45connected to God. I'm sure of that because some
- 44:47people can talk about the gospel as though they're reading an
- 44:50obituary. But there's still yet something
- 44:55on our part. There's still an indicator of
- 44:57the sensitivity of our hearts when we can still hear about
- 45:02this and many things about who God is and be moved and still
- 45:06Marvel and leave here and not immediately think what am I
- 45:10going to eat? But at least be impressed.
- 45:15At least be touched at least be stirred.
- 45:22They marveled. Because Simian preached, a
- 45:26sermon that lasted 13 seconds. and I want to tell you today,
- 45:34that if you've lost, I'm not concerned, if you can't go to
- 45:38your favorite restaurant anymore, I'm not concerned if
- 45:42you lost the privilege of going on for vacations a year, instead
- 45:46of one, Did you lose your Marvel?
- 45:53Did you lose your Wonder? Did you lose your?
- 45:58Aw, that's more concerning to me as a brother in Christ than what
- 46:04we are being stripped from in America.
- 46:09And my prayer again. Is that God by the Holy Spirit?
- 46:13Can do a work like he did in this couple at work Beyond this
- 46:18or work that we read later on about Mary when she hurts her
- 46:20and things. It says she treasured these
- 46:22things in her heart. Do you think that happens after
- 46:25Sunday morning messages? Do we treasure what?
- 46:29We heard in our heart that we meditate on it, we discuss it or
- 46:31just She treasured them in her heart.
- 46:36She relished she digested. She contemplated The mother of
- 46:43the Lord Jesus Christ and his Humanity.
- 46:47And so, that's what I'm leaving you with today.
- 46:50Ask God to cause you to Marvel again.
- 46:53Because only he can do it, this poor preacher can only go so
- 46:56far. My stammering lips can only
- 47:00suggest so much, but there is one who can impress you and move
- 47:04you and reveal things to you and he's called the gift of God.
- 47:09The Holy Spirit, can we ask him to help us today?
- 47:12And can ask the choir to join us?
- 47:39Before we sing, let's pray and ask God to help us Lord.
- 47:43We thank you for this afternoon where you've gathered us
- 47:46together. And we ask Lord that, you would
- 47:49renew that sense of wonder. Lord.
- 47:53We admit that our hearts are capable of being hardened, even
- 47:58in a setting like this that we can be unmoved unchanged, but we
- 48:03ask that you would rescue us. That you would rescue us even
- 48:08though if it's something that we've heard over and over again,
- 48:10that it would never fail to revive us.
- 48:13Lord, we leave that to you. What we have we have done in
- 48:17this moment. We've done prayerfully but we
- 48:19trust in your sovereignty. Only, you can touch and save
- 48:23souls. In this place.
- 48:25Only, you can revive a heart that has been calloused.
- 48:30And so we now worship you asking that even in this moment, even
- 48:34in this brief moment as we close, you would make an
- 48:37impression on our hearts and Jesus name, we pray.
- 48:41Amen.
