- 0:05Speaker 1: Now it's time to catch up with Country Weekly, where
- 0:08we check out news and gossip from the world of
- 0:11country music. I'm your host, Ken Dawkins, and I'll be
- 0:14reading from various sources found online. As a reminder, RADIOI
- 0:19is a reading service intended for people who are blind
- 0:22or have other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:25printed material. We'll become of the first article dated May fifth,
- 0:29from the boot dot Com Here Come the Jugs, or
- 0:33at least a teaser that unearths a never before heard
- 0:36song from a new documentary, a new sneak peek into
- 0:40Lifetime's upcoming. The Judge documentary focuses on Naomi Judd's passion
- 0:45for songwriting and reveals a never released song Naomi and
- 0:49Whine owner Judd recorded early on in their careers as
- 0:52a duo. The clip starts with Ashley looking through old
- 0:55cassette tapes with Larry Strickland, her stepfather and Naomi's widower.
- 1:00They pop one tape into a player and smile as
- 1:02the late singer's voice again fills the room. Hello Hello,
- 1:06Naomi comedically opens the tape. It's October the twenty fourth,
- 1:10nineteen eighty two. I'm Naomi judd I'm whine Owner adds
- 1:14a quiet voice in the background. The songs that you're
- 1:17about to hear were written exclusively and originally by me.
- 1:20Naomi continues with accompaniment from acoustic guitar. The mother daughter
- 1:24pair then launch into a song that Naomi wrote the
- 1:26same year, nineteen eighty two, which they never released. Even
- 1:31though it's just a demo, all the elements are there,
- 1:33Naomi and why on his signature close vocal harmonies or
- 1:36front and center on this tender, lilting country track, which
- 1:40centers around the lyric Daddy, are you coming home tonight?
- 1:44This was just then, when they were in their very
- 1:46early stages, before the record deal or anything. Wow, Strickland comments,
- 1:50it's all there, like butter and milk. Ashually adds the power,
- 1:53the harmony. Oh my god, why Owner Judge says in
- 1:57another clip, listening to this buried recording for the first
- 1:59time in what seems like a long time, she still
- 2:02remembers the song, though. As the tape plays, whyn Ona,
- 2:05who was still in her teens when she and her
- 2:07mom sang the recording, easily jumps in to sing along.
- 2:11It's about as pure as it ever got. She says
- 2:13at the conclusion of the tape, Seriously, that's about as
- 2:15pure as it will ever be. Naomi Judd wrote several
- 2:19songs for the Juds, including their hit Love Can Build
- 2:21a Bridge, which would wind up being their final performance
- 2:24together just weeks before in Naomi's death by suicide in
- 2:27twenty twenty two. She's better remembered as a vocalist than
- 2:30as a songwriter today, but this clip of the documentary
- 2:33emphasizes how central songwriting was to Naomi. I think, more
- 2:38than anything in this life, Mom wanted to be a
- 2:39songwriter and I'm still thinking about it daily and how
- 2:42in the world she came up with that stuff she
- 2:44came up with Whyona reflects in a new preview, it's
- 2:48literally what made me who I am today because I
- 2:50discovered my gift big time. So that's where it began.
- 2:53Whyoa continues the new documentary about the Judd families, called
- 2:57The Judd Family Truth Be Told, and it will air
- 3:00this Saturday, May tenth at eight pm on Lifetime. Those
- 3:03who don't have cable can stream the channel through services
- 3:06including Filo, Sling TV, and Hulu Plus Live TV. Meanwhile,
- 3:12The Judge's Best songs are here at the Boot. Top
- 3:15ten hits from Minona and Naomi. They have fourteen number
- 3:19one songs and dominated Duo and Group of the Year
- 3:22awards at both the CMA and ACM Awards. During the
- 3:25nineteen eighties. They also recorded several dozen great songs that
- 3:29never made radio. Here are the top songs ever, according
- 3:32to the Boot. While we're over at the Boot, might
- 3:34as well do this Number ten, Girls night Out from
- 3:37nineteen eighty five. The Judge had some fun with this song,
- 3:40and thirty years later, the number one hit became the
- 3:43name of their Las Vegas residency, which kicked off back
- 3:46on October seventh, twenty fifteen. Released in nineteen eighty five,
- 3:51is the second single from Why Not Me. Girls Night
- 3:53Out is the perfect weekend anthem for any group of
- 3:56girlfriends ready to get out and paint the town. Number nine,
- 3:59said the Boot, Let Me Tell You About Love from
- 4:01nineteen eighty nine. It was The Judge's fourteenth and final
- 4:05number one on the country charts, released in nineteen eighty
- 4:08nine as the second single from the album River of Time,
- 4:11and it made another appearance on The Judg's nineteen ninety
- 4:14one Greatest Hits volume two collection. Number eight, Love Is
- 4:17Alive from nineteen eighty five garnered the Judge a Grammy
- 4:21nomination for Best Country Song. Showcases love and its everyday
- 4:25appearance is at the breakfast Table and every day of
- 4:27the week. Have Mercy comes in at number seven, says
- 4:31The Boot, Also from eighty five. The sassy number, written
- 4:35by Paul Kennerley, was the Judg's lead single from Rock
- 4:37and with the Rhythm. It shot to number one, giving
- 4:40the Judge their fifth chart topping tune. Nineteen eighty eight's
- 4:44Give a Little Love was number six. The Judge released
- 4:47Give a Little Love as the first single from their
- 4:50Greatest Hits record in nineteen eighty eight. By this era,
- 4:53the Judges were known as one of country's greatest duos,
- 4:55and Give a Little Love was just one more reason
- 4:58to love them. With the rhythm of the rain, Number
- 5:01five from nineteen eighty six became the duo's seventh consecutive
- 5:06number one when it dropped in May of eighty six,
- 5:08spending twelve weeks on the country charts. It makes a
- 5:11rainy and dreary days seem utterly romantic, the Boot says.
- 5:15Number four is why Not Me? From the juds This
- 5:19was their second number one Hey. It dominated the charts
- 5:21for two weeks and spent a total of fifteen weeks
- 5:23on the country charts after its release in September of
- 5:26nineteen eighty four. As this first single and title track
- 5:30from Why Not Me Number three Mammy He's Crazy. The
- 5:34chart topping tune was the judge First ever number one,
- 5:37and it was in nineteen eighty four and only the
- 5:39second country number one sung by a female duo ever
- 5:44Number two Grandpa tell Me About the Good Old Days
- 5:47from eighty six. It's the story of a grandchild asking
- 5:50her grandfather about the good old days? Is it true
- 5:53that couples stayed married, praying was the norm, and fathers
- 5:56never left their families? And according to the booth, the
- 5:59number uber one song from the Judges, Love Can Build
- 6:02a Bridge from nineteen ninety, when at debuted in ninety,
- 6:06had struck a chord with country fans. Naomi Judd co
- 6:09wrote the song with Paul Overstreet and John Jarvis as
- 6:12a sort of goodbye to her family and fans after
- 6:14revealing that she'd been diagnosed with hepatitis C and had
- 6:18decided to retire to her condition. Next, Keith Urban to
- 6:23be fetted with the Triple Crown Award at the twenty
- 6:26twenty five ACMs. This week, Keith Urban will receive the
- 6:30prestigious Triple Crown Award of the twenty twenty five ACM Awards.
- 6:34Several of his fellow country superstars will salute him during
- 6:37the show by performing a selection of his greatest hits.
- 6:41Chris Stapleton, Megan Maroney, and the Brothers Osbourne are all
- 6:44on tap to tribute the star, performing a selection of
- 6:47covers from across Urban's twenty five years as one of
- 6:50country music's most popular hit makers. Only a few elite
- 6:54country superstars are eligible for the Triple Crown Award. In
- 6:58order to receive it, artists must have won the New
- 7:00Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Entertainer
- 7:03of the Year at the ACMs during their careers. With
- 7:06his new title, Irvin joins the ranks of artists like
- 7:08Miranda Lambert, George Strake, Dolly Parton, and Brooks and Dunn,
- 7:11all of whom have celebrated as Triple honorees at shows past.
- 7:16But the ACM doesn't award a Triple Crown recipient every year.
- 7:20In fact, the last time there was an honoree was
- 7:22at the twenty ten Awards show when Carrie Underwood was
- 7:25celebrated for her Triple Crown status. Urban's tribute was part
- 7:29of the show's Milestone's sixtieth anniversary celebration. Next, Luke Bryan
- 7:36throws a hilarious but uncalled for jab at Blake Shelton.
- 7:41Luke Brian just threw a jab at Blake Shelton out
- 7:44of nowhere, and it was funny. Brian was giving a
- 7:47behind the scenes look at the setup of his Country
- 7:50Song Came On tour, which begins May twenty ninth in Bethel,
- 7:53New York, when he randomly shot shade at Shelton. The two,
- 7:57of course are longtime Friendsyan is in an empty arena
- 8:01with no one but a few stage workers present when
- 8:03he hits record. Hey you also, we're at rehearsal for
- 8:06the Country Came On Song tour. We got this building
- 8:08just to kind of show everybody what Blake Shelton's ticket
- 8:11sales look like. Any jokes, The joke, of course, is
- 8:14that the arena is empty at the time. To add
- 8:16insult to injury, the one Marguerite included a sound effect
- 8:19Cricket's chirping to further drive home the point that Shelton's
- 8:22ticket sales are lacking. The few people that were in
- 8:25the background as Brian was filming can be heard getting
- 8:28a good chuckle out of the whole situation. Shelton's on
- 8:31his Friends and Heroes tour, which kicked off in February
- 8:33and runs through October, there's no tangible evidence that his
- 8:37tour sales are low. This is simply, of course, Brian
- 8:40getting a good ribbing on his buddy. The back and
- 8:42forth between Brian and Shelton has gone on for quite
- 8:45some time now. We jog on down the street to
- 8:49Saving Country Music, where the first articles dated May fifth,
- 8:54and a little story ten years ago, Chris Stapleton revolutionizes
- 8:57country with landmark album. There are just a few landmark
- 9:01records that you can point back to in the history
- 9:04of country music and legitimately claim they revolutionize the genre
- 9:07in fundamental ways. They might not be your favorite records,
- 9:11and they might not be the greatest selling records, or
- 9:13maybe they are, but there was country music before their release.
- 9:17In country music after Kentucky's own, Chris Stapleton's Traveler is
- 9:21one of those records. Released on May fifth back in
- 9:24two thousand fifteen. Traveler wasn't the beginning of the country
- 9:28music revolution were currently in the midst of. It was
- 9:30simply the culmination of work that had been put in
- 9:32by others for many years. But unlike its preditcessors, it
- 9:36didn't just burst through to tickle the mainstream. It would
- 9:40go on to positively dominate in a manner that is
- 9:42still very much reverberating to this day, says Saving Country
- 9:45Music here on the tenth anniversary of the album's release.
- 9:49Travelers still sits at number thirteen on Billboard's Country Albums Chart,
- 9:54meaning it remains one of the most popular titles in
- 9:57country music at the moment and has never really exited
- 10:00the public consciousness over time. Stapleton's cover of Tennessee Whiskey,
- 10:05originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, currently sits
- 10:09at number twenty one on the Country streaming charts. That
- 10:12Ladies and Gentlemen is long lasting impact. It was Stergel
- 10:16Simpson recording as magnum Opus Metamodern Sounds in Country Music
- 10:20with his road band and with producer Dave Cobb specifically
- 10:23that inspired Stapleton to approach the recording of Traveler, like
- 10:26he did also with his road band All Live in
- 10:29the room with Dave Cobb behind the console. Stapleton was
- 10:33inspired also to approach the album in a new way
- 10:36after some major life changes previously, he tried to launch
- 10:40a career in the mainstream in a more conventional manner.
- 10:43He sang back up on countless records and had written
- 10:45songs for numerous performers, including George Strait and Josh Turner,
- 10:49and even big pop country stars like Luke Bryan. Arguably
- 10:53Stapleton's biggest claim to fame was writing a song for
- 10:56A Dell At that point, but his career wasn't really
- 10:59going anywhere. He says, I lost my dad in October
- 11:02of two thousand thirteen and did a little bit of
- 11:04soul searching. My wife was kind enough to buy me
- 11:07an old jeep. We flew out to Phoenix and drove
- 11:09it all the way back to Nashville through the desert.
- 11:11I thought a lot about music and my dad and
- 11:13the things that he would have liked that I should
- 11:15be doing. Out of that, I actually wrote the song
- 11:18Traveler driving down Interstate forty through New Mexico. That became
- 11:21the corner stone for the record and wound up being
- 11:24the title track. If you regard Chris Stapleton in the
- 11:27release of travel Right Now, you might misremember it as
- 11:30being a big moment, rocketing Stapleton into superstardom off the
- 11:33strength of Tennessee whiskey. But that's not what happened at all,
- 11:37says Saving Country Music. Traveler enacted a slow, smoldering burn
- 11:41until it erupted. Stapleton was much more well known in
- 11:45independent circles at the time than he was in the
- 11:47main stream. He was even interviewed here at Saving Country Music.
- 11:51He fronted the hard charging bluegrass band The Steel Drivers.
- 11:54He toured with the southern rock band The Johnson Brothers.
- 11:58Nashville insiders knew of Stapleton through his songwriting credits, but
- 12:01that's about as far as it went. Traveler was being
- 12:04ignored by mainstream country radio, of course, and sales were
- 12:07perhaps spirited for a non radio release, but completely under
- 12:11the radar. But people up and down Music Row love Traveler,
- 12:14as did Stapleton's fellow performers, and when it came time
- 12:17to vote for the twenty fifteen CMA Awards, they all
- 12:21punched the tab for Stapleton, resulting in him receiving nominations
- 12:25for New Artists of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year,
- 12:28an Album of the Year for Traveler. Specifically. Heading into
- 12:30the CMA Awards in November, people saving country music thought
- 12:34if Stapleton could win the New Artist of the Year,
- 12:36it would be a big win for the good guys.
- 12:39When he won in all three categories, it was a
- 12:41shot heard round the country music world and beyond. Nobody
- 12:44expected him to win two of the evening's biggest awards.
- 12:47At that moment, most country music fans didn't even know
- 12:50who Chris Stapleton was, but they were about to find out.
- 12:54Along with the big, unexpected wins, Chris Stapleton also performed
- 12:58Tennessee Whiskey on the CMA Awards stage with Justin Timberlake
- 13:02and the rest is history, and that remains one of
- 13:04my favorite TV live performances. It arrested the entire American consciousness,
- 13:10and ten years later, Tennessee Whiskey remains one of the
- 13:12most popular songs in all of music. A forty plus
- 13:15year old country song originally recorded by George Jones and
- 13:18David allan Coe. What was the Magic sauce that put
- 13:22Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey and Traveler on top. Well, remember
- 13:25this was that the height of bro country and country
- 13:27music was at a crossroads. Would it be Florida Georgia
- 13:30line representing the future of country music, or would it
- 13:33be the emerging Kentucky and Appalachi resurgence spirited forward by
- 13:37the likes of Sturgill Simpson and others and brought to
- 13:40the mainstream by Stapleton. CMA voters made their choice, and
- 13:43time has proven they made the right one. Of course,
- 13:46there's plenty that is polarizing about the album, and Stapleton,
- 13:49for that matter, said saving country music. Is it really
- 13:52legitimately country or more soulful Americana? Why did he spell
- 13:56Traveler with two l's instead of one? As we see
- 13:59all the time time and independent underground country music. As
- 14:02soon as Traveler became popular, it also became extremely polarizing.
- 14:06It was the pop country world co opting the Kentucky resurgence.
- 14:11Some surmised Chris Stapleton might have lost his street cred,
- 14:14but he also created a strong counterbalance to bro country.
- 14:17He created a conduit for popular country fans to eventually
- 14:20discover artists like Sturgil Simpson and later Tyler Childers and
- 14:24other Kentucky insurgents. Stapleton would go on to book artists
- 14:27like Brent Cobb and Marty Stewart as openers on his
- 14:30massive arena shows, and Chris Stapleton and the success of
- 14:34Traveler was a catalyst for so many positive developments in
- 14:37country music. It's hard to enumerate them all. But unlike
- 14:41some other historical retrospectives, you really don't need to sell
- 14:44the public on the significance of Traveler. They're still feeling it.
- 14:47It's still at the forefront of the American consciousness, even
- 14:51here a decade after its release. Next, Cody Jinks announce
- 14:56his new album, in My Blood. The modern King of
- 15:00Outlaw Country isn't one for lounging around for a few
- 15:02years between albums. After releasing a new studio album and
- 15:06a Lefty Frizelle tribute in twenty twenty four, Cody Jinks
- 15:09will be releasing his latest album, called in My Blood
- 15:12on July twenty fifth. Once again, the album was recorded
- 15:15the Sonic Ranch in Torneilo, Texas. Just like most of
- 15:18all Cody's music since his Landmark twenty fifteen release The
- 15:22Adobe Sessions. You're on a Journey with Me. My life
- 15:26is My Records. Cody Jinks says nothing's changed. The album
- 15:29was me, my band, producers and engineers. That's as real
- 15:32as it gets. That's an authentic as I can make it.
- 15:35His band is the Tone Deaf Hippies, consisting of Joshua
- 15:38Thompson on bass, Drew Harrical Keys, Austin hot Rod Trip
- 15:42Pedal steel, Chris Clarity guitar, and Jake Lintner on guitar,
- 15:46with Matt Nolan and Lenny Castro also appearing on the
- 15:49new album. It was produced by Joshua Thompson and Charles Godfrey.
- 15:54Cody Jinks considers the new album the beginning of a
- 15:56part two to his career, especially in his writing, with
- 15:59his last album twenty four Is Changed the Game being
- 16:02the close of part one where Jinks addressed his recent
- 16:05sobriety and the way he helped revolutionize country music as
- 16:08an independent artist. Cody wrote many of the songs of
- 16:11the album, but like he normally does, he also collaborated
- 16:14with a host of co writers, including Ward Davis, Tennessee,
- 16:18Jet Ray, Willie Hubbard, Channing, Wilson, Kendall, Marvel, BlackBerry Smokes,
- 16:22Charlie Starr, who Jinks co wrote the title track with
- 16:26the debut single from the album called Found, will be
- 16:28released or has been released actually on May second, but
- 16:33members of Cody's fan club will be able to hear
- 16:35it early before that time. I guess they did. Okay.
- 16:39The track list will be better than the Bottle Lost Highway,
- 16:43the others in My Blood, Something Wicked this way comes,
- 16:47See the Man, when you Can't Remember, Lonely Man, Monster Found,
- 16:52and When Time Didn't Fly. Now we head out to
- 16:56countrynow dot com. With the first article dated May second,
- 17:01Jake Worthington explains how a traffic stops spark the inspiration
- 17:05for it Ain't the Whiskey. After much demand, Jake Worthington
- 17:10has officially dropped his brand new track it Ain't the Whiskey.
- 17:13Written alongside Will Banister, Jeff Hyde, and Roger Springer, this
- 17:17high energy and infectious tune finds the big loud Texas
- 17:20artist and country traditionalist sharing his sense of humor while
- 17:25recalling an after dark encounter with a cop. Confident that
- 17:28Worthington's character has been swerving on the road from heavy drinking.
- 17:33The police officer in the song orders the singer to
- 17:36exit his vehicle so he can further investigate the situation.
- 17:40During the ordeal, Worthington insists he's impaired driving isn't from
- 17:43being under the influence. Rather, it's due to being love
- 17:46struck over the woman in a passenger seat of his truck.
- 17:50It ain't the whiskey that gets me looking like I'm
- 17:52out of my mind. When she kissed me hit harder
- 17:54than some hillbilly shine. If you're thinking I've been drinking,
- 17:57there's a little bitty reason I've been speaking, just a
- 17:59little tongue tied. It ain't the whiskey, It's the woman
- 18:02by my side. Worthington sings lightheartedly, putting his timeless Southern
- 18:06drawl on full display between the tongue in cheek lyrics
- 18:10and melody that includes various instruments ranging from a sawing
- 18:14fiddle and retro electric guitars to pedal steel and barroom piano.
- 18:18It Ain't the Whiskey falls in the vein of neo
- 18:20traditionalist artists and nineties throwbacks. He channels tunes like John
- 18:25Anderson's keep your Hands to Yourself Alan Jackson's Summertime Blues,
- 18:29Randy Travis, If I Didn't Have You, and Hank Williams
- 18:32Junior's All My Rowdy Friends. Interestingly, Worthington pulled inspiration for
- 18:37ain Ain't the Whiskey from a real life experience. He
- 18:39and his wife, Sophie had the research department. As they say,
- 18:43sometimes it's be that way, says the Laporte, Texas native,
- 18:47sharing hilarious moment when he and his wife had a
- 18:49memorable run in with the law. A funny thing was
- 18:52around the time I wrote this, my wife came to
- 18:54me to go play a show in Texas and we
- 18:56got pulled over speeding somewhere. Anyhow, long story short, that
- 18:59was the first year of being married to Sophia. We
- 19:02found ourselves in the back of a cop car. Worthington
- 19:05told Country Now at Live and the Vard Ghost Country.
- 19:08It just created all kinds of fiasco for us. But
- 19:10months later Jeff Roger and Will had called me up
- 19:13and we talked about it. They had a pretty great
- 19:15idea and I lived it a little bit. So that's
- 19:17about it. It's just a fun, loving song. Before releasing it,
- 19:21Ain't the Whiskey, Worthington drew support for the song from
- 19:23his fan base, testing the response with teases across his
- 19:26social media platform. He garnered over twenty five million pre
- 19:30release listens through viral clips that he teased on social media.
- 19:34With the increasing fan demand for the track, Worthington knew
- 19:36it was time to finally drop it. Taking the excitement
- 19:40even further, Worthington has treated listeners to the official music
- 19:42video for the track, directed by Jay Curtis Miller. The
- 19:45cinematic clip guest stars Worthington's wife, who mostly stays calm
- 19:50for her role before flashing her vibrant smile at the
- 19:52police officer. Worthington's acting throughout the clip brings the story
- 19:56to life even further with his over the top facial expressions.
- 20:00He mouths out the words to this song. We had
- 20:03a lot of fun shooting the music video and I'm
- 20:04glad they are connecting with it. Worthington said, I feel
- 20:09like any minute now it's going to go all the
- 20:11way or something. But I just think it's a really
- 20:13cool song. Thank you for all listening to it. It
- 20:16Ain't the Whiskey is Worthington's latest track following recent collaborations
- 20:20with legendary Hall of Famer Marty Stewart on the I'm
- 20:23the One and superstar Miranda Lambert on Hello Shitty Day Music. Aside,
- 20:28Worthington has been keeping busy on the road and in
- 20:30his new role as father to daughter Whitney. That's Whitley
- 20:33Ann Worthington. He and his wife welcomed Whitley into the
- 20:36world on October twenty fourth of nineteen, No, that would
- 20:40be October twenty fourth of twenty twenty four. Of being
- 20:43a new father, he shared, it's the best. I mean,
- 20:45just like anybody who brings a child into the world,
- 20:47a lot of things become your reality and hit you
- 20:50in the face right there. The biggest thing I take
- 20:52away from it is I got to be who she
- 20:54finds in this life, and that's a big old responsibility.
- 20:57I'm proud to have it, and my wife's amazing with
- 21:00her and she just brought so much joy. Worthington is
- 21:03currently on the road as a special guest for Zach
- 21:05Top's Cold Beer and Country Music Tour. After that, he
- 21:08will join John Parties's Honky Tonk Hollywood Tour next. Fans
- 21:13call zak Top the man's saving country music after Tonight's
- 21:17show debut. Fresh off his win for ACM New Male
- 21:21Artist of the Year, Zak Top made his way to
- 21:23the Big Apple to make his debut on The Tonight
- 21:26Show starring Jimmy Fallon. The country star delivered a performance
- 21:29of his fast rising hit I Never Lie, captivating fans
- 21:33with his brand of traditional country alongside his touring band.
- 21:37His performance drew praise from fans who flocked to The
- 21:39Tonight Show's YouTube to leave comments in support of the
- 21:42country singer. One years of road, he's the new hope
- 21:46for true country music, while another teamed Top the top
- 21:49Man's saving country music. It's no surprise to see comments
- 21:53like this. Top has been praised for keeping real country
- 21:55music alive ever since he first stepped into the spotlight.
- 22:00I Never Lie is featured on the Washington Natives debut album,
- 22:03Cold Beer and Country Music. While the song quickly became
- 22:06a fan favorite during his live shows, Top admits he
- 22:09was a bit surprised by how strongly it resonated with audience.
- 22:12I Never Lie. It's kind of been the thing off
- 22:15the record that really's poked its head up. It's funny,
- 22:17he previously shared with Nick Major on the Spout podcast.
- 22:22That's either favorite or second favorite song on the record
- 22:24from me, But I wasn't expecting that to be the
- 22:26one that would kind of take off and be the hit,
- 22:28so to speak. Top Co wrote with the song with
- 22:32Carson Chamberlain and Tim Nichols. Their sharp, witty songwriting tells
- 22:35the story of a man who pretends to be unfazed
- 22:37by our recent breakup and his ex's new relationship. I
- 22:42sleep like a baby, I never show up late for work.
- 22:44I don't drink whiskey. I don't know how it feels
- 22:46to hurt. Oh, and I ain't been lonely since you
- 22:49said goodbye. I wish I could say I miss you,
- 22:51but you know I never lie, He sings from the chorus.
- 22:54It's as country as anything on the album. In a ballad,
- 22:57top pointed out so the fact that when we hit
- 22:59those first to little mimised guitar riffs, people just lose
- 23:03it and other stuff Brooks had done recently surprised Top
- 23:07of his first ever ACM award, delivering a special video
- 23:10message to the singer prior to his sold out show
- 23:12in Wilmington, North Carolina, last week of the honor top shared.
- 23:17I couldn't be more honored, and I can't say big
- 23:19enough thank you to my fans for loving music and
- 23:21loving what we do on the road and listening to
- 23:24the songs every day. It means the world to me.
- 23:26I've got what I've always wanted, just to play and
- 23:29sing for a living, and I get to do that now.
- 23:32And it's cool to be able to get a little
- 23:33trophy every now and then to let us know we're
- 23:35doing good. So thank you so much. This is beautiful.
- 23:39Now we're onto holler dot country dot com, where they
- 23:42don't date their articles, but this is a news story
- 23:45from the last couple of days. Let's call it May fourth.
- 23:48Parker McCollum teases new single Big Sky, sets release date
- 23:52for Wednesday, ahead of the release of his fifth studio album.
- 23:56Parker McCollum has been faithfully teasing what's to come from
- 23:59his first self titled collection. The latest taste arrives in
- 24:03the form of Big Sky, a stark new single seemingly
- 24:06about an existence spent with the head in clouds. For
- 24:10the last week, the artist was in sharing short snippets
- 24:12from the Tom pettyesque tune, one driven by a carefree
- 24:15beat and weightless lyrics. Can't remember all the places I've been.
- 24:19The star cruns against the jaunty groove. I just wander
- 24:23through the wild looking for a new friend. I just
- 24:25wander through the while looking for a new friend. I
- 24:27fly and I never land. It's a big Sky. I'm
- 24:29a lonely man. If you're looking for me, just know
- 24:32that I'm free and there ain't no telling where I
- 24:34might be. With the latest teaser, McCollum revealed that Big
- 24:39Sky will drop this Wednesday, or did drop this Wednesday,
- 24:42the seventh. The new single joins the previously released What
- 24:45Kind Of Man and Hope that I'm Enough, all set
- 24:48to appear on Parker McCollum's new album, called Parker mccollumn
- 24:52on June twenty seventh. The new album will apparently signal
- 24:55a return to the star's roots as he revisits the
- 24:58sound or sound and style of his twenty fifteen debut album,
- 25:02The Limestone Kid. I was twenty two years old and
- 25:05I wrote that record in my apartment in Austin, he
- 25:07recently shared with fans during a live performance. I've put
- 25:11out three studio albums since the record, and everybody always
- 25:14says man love the Limestone Kid. So this album that's
- 25:17coming out this summer, it's not the Limestone Kid, but
- 25:20it's probably as close as I'm ever going to get.
- 25:22You got to listen top to bottom. I really hope
- 25:24that you guys love it. Next, Morgan Wallen plans to
- 25:29release Superman this Friday. Big news from Morgan Wallen, fans
- 25:35will have one less new song to find time to
- 25:37listen to when the thirty seven track I'm the Problem
- 25:40comes out on May sixteenth. The Last Night singer shared
- 25:43on Instagram on Monday that the highly anticipated Superman will
- 25:48be released a week before the studio album this weekend.
- 25:51It's special to me for obvious reasons, he wrote on
- 25:54the post. I want to have its own moment and
- 25:56hopefully that's what this will accomplish. The Rainning CMA Entertainer
- 25:59of the Year previously shared a preview of the song
- 26:02he wrote as a tribute to his four year old
- 26:04son Indigo Wilder, to whom he shares with ex fiancee
- 26:07K T. Smith. I've been trying for a long time
- 26:10to write a song I love to my son, Walin
- 26:12shared in an Instagram post. None of them ever feel
- 26:15good enough because of how perfect I want something like
- 26:17this to be. And I'm not saying this is perfect,
- 26:21but I'm very proud of it. The lyrics to Superman
- 26:24directly reference Wallin's troubled past with lines about his rast
- 26:27drunken behavior and previous relationships as he expresses hope that
- 26:31when Indigo Wilder grows up, he won't think less of
- 26:34him as a father. One day, he's going to see
- 26:36my mugshot from a night when I got a little
- 26:38too drunk. Hear a song about a girl that I
- 26:41lost from the times when I just wouldn't grow up,
- 26:43he sings, And when you ain't a kid no more,
- 26:45I hope you don't think less of me. I try
- 26:48to hide my fallen soul, but you're going to see.
- 26:51In the chorus, Wallin introduces the Superman analogy, likening his
- 26:55shortcomings to the way the Man of Steel is also
- 26:57weakened by exposure to green kryptonite, a fictional mineral from
- 27:01the planet Krypton that's radioactives as Superman and other Kryptonians
- 27:05now and then that bottles my kryptonite brings a Man
- 27:08of Steel down to his knees. Don't always know my
- 27:10wrong from right. Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy. No,
- 27:13I don't always save the day, but you know, for you,
- 27:15I'll always try. I'll do the best I can. A
- 27:18superman is still just a man sometimes, oh sometimes. Morgan
- 27:22Wallace's previously spoken about his son when he joined THEO
- 27:25Vaughn on this past weekend's podcast. I think it just
- 27:29gets better and better the older he gets, while and shared.
- 27:32I mean, it's always been cool, but you know, he's
- 27:34just four years old. He'll be five this year. Just
- 27:36the personality that keeps coming out in the relationships that
- 27:39you build. You know, he's got a little sas on him.
- 27:42He's got a little attitude, which I like. I like
- 27:44that spunk. He told Vaughn. Like, yesterday, my dad was
- 27:47trying to get him to eat. It's kind of a
- 27:49task to get him to sit still long enough to eat.
- 27:51And my dad was like, hey, man, if you don't eat,
- 27:53I'm gonna put you in the bedroom and you're gonna
- 27:54go to sleep. I don't know exactly what my dad
- 27:57said to him, but Indigo looked at my dad and
- 27:59he said, I don't want you to stay here anymore.
- 28:02It's just hilarious. Just anything to keep him rocking. But
- 28:05he's a sweetheart. He's almost too sweet. He's too nice
- 28:07to everyone, like people he doesn't know. It's like, hey man,
- 28:10we don't like everybody. Man, we don't know these people.
- 28:13So I'm trying to teach him a little bit of that.
- 28:16Sounds like both of the little boys are doing some
- 28:18growing up at the same time. Wallin co wrote twenty
- 28:21two of the thirty seven tracks appearing on his fourth
- 28:24studio record, which includes collaborations with Tate McCrae, Eric Church, Hardy,
- 28:29and Earnest. This concludes the reading of Country Weekly for
- 28:33this week. Folks. If you have any comments or suggestions
- 28:36about our program, kindly call us at eight five nine
