- 0:33growth in either their personal or their professional life. And today
- 0:37I am happy for you to meet Jackie Wheeler.
- 0:41Jackie, thank you for taking time to be with us.
- 0:44Hi. Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to get to know know
- 0:48all of you and to get to know you well. So let's start
- 0:52with what do you do? And then we'll find out what it was that what
- 0:56happened that makes you do it so well.
- 0:59Okay. So I own Jackie Style image and
- 1:03branding agency and it is a personal style
- 1:07branding agency where I help my women
- 1:10in the spotlight show up in rooms on
- 1:14signature and on brand. And so why
- 1:18is that important? Well, it's important.
- 1:22Well, signature brand has a
- 1:26importance of like showing up with that opportunity
- 1:30to have that non verbal message that is
- 1:34consistent to and what you want to say. And we have so much
- 1:38opportunity that we don't get to have our messages heard.
- 1:42But this is that opportunity when you have your signature brand to
- 1:45own the message and to show up in that message that you want the world
- 1:49to see in here. And I think one of the things that people
- 1:53ignore is that people make a decision
- 1:57about you in a very short amount of time, seven
- 2:00seconds. And if you are
- 2:03bland, if you're one of the bland people,
- 2:07you're not going to stand out and they're just, there's just too much
- 2:11noise and clutter. And that doesn't mean that you have to go shouting from
- 2:15the rooftop all the time. But there's a certain
- 2:18consistency. I think when you're consistent it
- 2:22helps to build trust faster. Yes. Do you know? Yes, I
- 2:26agree. I, I, I just say with my clients if you, you know, if you
- 2:29decide you're going to only post once a month,
- 2:33which I don't think is enough, do it
- 2:37once a month so that the people that are looking for you are going to
- 2:41find it. Don't say I'm going to post three times a month and then not
- 2:44do anything. Post one time, build up so that you can say,
- 2:48okay, now I'm ready to do two and Be consistent with two.
- 2:51So there are lots of opportunities. Well, let's find out. First,
- 2:56how did you get into branding? Well,
- 3:00I got into personal style and image consulting.
- 3:04My poor mother birthed a fashionista. And
- 3:08a very early age I was telling her yes and no on what I was
- 3:11going to wear or not wear and telling her what to wear and
- 3:15styling my friends through junior high and high school.
- 3:19And right as I had graduated high school, I had met.
- 3:24I had an opportunity, I was very brave and called this
- 3:27lady in a. A magazine and like
- 3:31a. A city magazine. It's one that's just like, local. And
- 3:35it said image consultant. And I was like, what is that?
- 3:39And, and I bravely just picked up the phone and said,
- 3:42hey, I want to know more about what you do and what that is.
- 3:46And she told me about it. And it, like, created this
- 3:50moment of like, all the things that I
- 3:54knew and I do naturally and I was able, just
- 3:58doing, but didn't have any words or have the right words or
- 4:02right concepts to like, say, this is what it is. She gave
- 4:06me that, that, that clicked, like, oh,
- 4:09image consultant. That's what I want to do. I want to go to school for
- 4:12fashion, and I want to show up and be an image consultant. And that
- 4:16one moment of me being brave and calling
- 4:20her really changed, really changed the
- 4:23trajectory because I thought I was going to become a buyer and own
- 4:27a store that had a clothing store because I love clothes so much and love
- 4:30fashion so much. I. I have to tell you how happy.
- 4:34I'm always happy when people find
- 4:38what it is that they want to do, particularly if they find it when they're
- 4:41young. Do you know? I, you know, because there's so.
- 4:45There's so many expectations about us of what we're going to do. And, you
- 4:49know, one of the things I tell entrepreneurs all the time is don't expect your
- 4:52kids to want to take over your business. Right. I mean, that is
- 4:56like a disaster waiting to happen. You know, if they're not showing
- 4:59any interest, they probably don't have any skills for it either.
- 5:03So I, Right.
- 5:07I have, I'm a boy. I have a boy household. And none of. They are
- 5:11not into. They're like, we do not want anything to do with what you're
- 5:15doing, Mom. Yeah. Okay. So I think that
- 5:20I'm going to take myself as an example. I probably
- 5:23have the worst fashion in the world. Oh, no.
- 5:28So, so, you know, part of it is that
- 5:31at one point I weighed 440 pounds. I lost almost
- 5:35200. I kept off 150.
- 5:38But typically when people tell me that they love what I'm wearing,
- 5:42it's because somebody else bought it because it's got color and pattern
- 5:46and stuff. I'm. I'm very much a solid kind of
- 5:50person, you know, And I would think that
- 5:54there is some resistance to that. Do you know that.
- 5:57That getting out of your own way and seeing yourself differently. I mean, when
- 6:01I lost that weight, I kept buying the exact
- 6:05same outfit, but in a smaller size. I did not realize that
- 6:09I was actually smaller because I looked exactly the same.
- 6:13To me, right inside your mind's
- 6:16eye, you looked exactly the same. Yeah. So what are some of
- 6:20the things that, you know, some of the things that we can do to project
- 6:24our brand and, and our style and some of the things
- 6:27that people resist? Let's put it to
- 6:31you that way. Okay. Oftentimes when
- 6:35once someone's made a decision to come and work with me,
- 6:38they're. They've already had like someone
- 6:42mention something or if thing has happened or
- 6:46they were invited to do something and they weren't on point
- 6:50and then realized that they need a little bit of extra help or they're
- 6:54just exhausted and don't want to make those decisions anymore and need somebody to show
- 6:57them how to create that for them in their wardrobe.
- 7:01And so my process is to help really.
- 7:05I want every one of my clients to show up as authentically
- 7:08as possible. So if you're telling me that you feel your best and
- 7:12amazing and in solids, then I'm going to figure out how
- 7:16to put you in your best colors, making sure that it
- 7:20fits your body really great, that it fits your
- 7:23personality really, really well. But the other thing that I do,
- 7:27which is that brand piece, is what are those three words
- 7:30that you want someone to say,
- 7:34hear, or think when you walk into the room or after you've
- 7:38left? Like, how do you want to show what is that non verbal
- 7:41message that you want for your brand
- 7:45when you walk into that room? And then we look at what that
- 7:49looks like and how we can tweak it, how we
- 7:52can elevate it, how we can, like, what's
- 7:56inspiring behind that and how that works best for you,
- 8:00for your authentic self. We've never talked, but in my work
- 8:04monthly workshop, I do a thing where it's like, what are the
- 8:08three words you want to be remembered by? Yes.
- 8:11100Th birthday and. And. Oh,
- 8:15and. And that is what helped me to lose weight. It was like
- 8:19I knew that my life wasn't the way that I wanted it and I said,
- 8:22what was missing? And it was like I had no energy. I mean, just going
- 8:25up and down the stairs. I went down once a day and came up once
- 8:29a day. And I said, I want to be energetic. When, when I, when was
- 8:33I the most en. Energetic? And it was when my, like I was in college.
- 8:37And so I called up one of my college friends and I said, what if
- 8:40you had to use one word to describe me, what would it be? And she
- 8:43said, adventuresome. You were the most adventuresome person I'd
- 8:47ever known. You would pick up and go with the drop of a hat. And
- 8:50I was like, oh my God, I have no adventure in my life. I have
- 8:54no spontaneity. And then I asked my husband and
- 8:57I said, what would be the word that you would have used to describe me?
- 9:01And he said, you were the most intriguing woman I'd ever met.
- 9:05Oh, good words. So as I
- 9:09was losing weight, when I got ready to eat stuff that was not
- 9:12quite what I should be eating, I'd go, is this what an energetic,
- 9:16adventuresome, intriguing woman would eat? Is this gonna
- 9:20fuel me the way I wanted to? And so for business, I
- 9:24traded out the intriguing for curio. You know, being curious.
- 9:27Yes. And so I use that
- 9:31when I'm posting, I use that when I'm talking about things.
- 9:35And that's why I say to people, you can start right now
- 9:39to start making an impact on your brand and the way that you come across.
- 9:43And the thing that I love since I started doing that is when people
- 9:47call to have a call with me, they say, I love your
- 9:51energy. Which means that the people who don't love my energy
- 9:54have self selected out. So I could use the three
- 9:58words as well. I love that and
- 10:02intriguing man. I kind of feel like I need to put that one in my
- 10:05little how I want to be shown up. You need to have
- 10:09that body head connection, like yeah, yeah,
- 10:14make it, feel. It all over the place.
- 10:18So the other thing is, I think one
- 10:22of the mistakes that people make is
- 10:25that they lead with, you know, I, I, I have
- 10:29this degree, I'm certified in this. I do this, I do this, I do this.
- 10:33And honestly, they don't care
- 10:37because if they can't get the vibe from you, you know, the connection
- 10:41from you, they don't care how educated or how, how much
- 10:45expertise you have. And so where does that, in
- 10:48terms of the way you dress and you know, that kind of thing
- 10:52come in? Well, if you, let's say that you
- 10:56want to, we'll use the word educated
- 10:59or you know, if that's something that's important to you and you want to be
- 11:02like, you know, I am educated in this. What does that look like
- 11:07for me? You know, like, what I see inside my head for what
- 11:10educated might look like may not be the same thing as what educated looks
- 11:14like for you. So in that process, we talk about, like,
- 11:18how does that look when you think of somebody who is educated?
- 11:22How are they showing up? And so that you don't have to say the words,
- 11:25here I am, I'm educated. You're putting that
- 11:30information, that vibe out without having to say
- 11:34a word. And so we, like, just really thinking about,
- 11:38like, what does that mean to me? Is educated mean
- 11:41wearing glasses? Does that mean I need to get my fake pair because I want
- 11:45that? Or, you know, that's not necessarily what I would recommend, because that's
- 11:49not very authentic. But this is an example. Right.
- 11:52How does that feel? How do you. How do you
- 11:56come across authentically in that? And it doesn't mean you have to be in
- 12:00the oxford suit. It doesn't mean you have to wear, you know, but it might.
- 12:04It might mean that for you. So, you know, is a bow tie mean,
- 12:07educated? Maybe to somebody? It
- 12:11depends. But more importantly, is coming authentically and
- 12:15caring about the person that's in front of you than
- 12:18wanting to give out your titles? That's my personal
- 12:21opinion. And. And I think, you know, like, for instance, one. You know, one
- 12:25of. One of the best pieces of advice I got was
- 12:30wearing red. Really makes me stand out when I'm.
- 12:33I'm doing zoom calls. And so I always wear red when I do my workshops.
- 12:37And, you know, part of what I. I say is, you don't need to be
- 12:41fixed. You just need to be found. And I have a slide that has all
- 12:44white balls except one red one. Right. So I go,
- 12:48see, you found me. I love it
- 12:52because I'm goofy. Right. I love that. Me too.
- 12:57So I'm looking at you. You've got on a purple top. You've got on purple
- 13:00glasses. Yep. And I'm assuming that you probably have a lot of different
- 13:04colored glasses. Yes. But
- 13:08this is my favorite one. And I actually only have one pair
- 13:12of glasses with fun
- 13:15toppers. Yes. Because it's easier.
- 13:19Yes. Well, you know, and so, you know, so for me,
- 13:23you know, my kids are always, mom, you should get different. I'm like, no, this
- 13:26is, like, too much work. I mean, I'm just going through this thing where I
- 13:30had cataract surgery, so I actually don't need glasses for Long
- 13:33distance. And I'm like. But I've always had glasses.
- 13:37I just, you know, so I, you know, I wear them anyway. I mean,
- 13:40I need a computer, but. But. But I think that there are lots of
- 13:44fun things that you can do
- 13:48that are part of you. So. I'm a jewelry person,
- 13:51so I always like to wear jewelry. I have
- 13:55a bracelet that I. I kind of have stopped wearing it, but I. I used
- 13:59to wear it for everything. It's like this huge, chunky bracelet.
- 14:03And, you know, that was like, me. I mean, I didn't leave the house
- 14:07without it. It was. If you saw me, I had this bracelet on, and people
- 14:10always talked about it. And the thing that was weird about the bracelet is that
- 14:14it was made during World War II for my mom.
- 14:18And. And a guy who was, like, really in love with her made this bracelet
- 14:21for her out of welding, you know, wires. And so, of course, when she
- 14:25married my dad, she stopped wearing it. And I was like. When I was in
- 14:28college, I was like, oh, I want this, right? And so that was kind of
- 14:31my signature piece for, like, forever. So you
- 14:35don't have to do big things, you know? And the more
- 14:39it is that you like it so that you want to do it,
- 14:43the more it really, I think, reflects. And I think that's the part
- 14:46that,
- 14:50you know, we're talking about being authentic, and I'm talking too much. I should let
- 14:54you talk a lot more. But. But
- 14:58can you do. Can you define that? Because I think people
- 15:01think it means something really mystical,
- 15:06okay. And not practical.
- 15:12So to some of the. Some of the things that you were just saying,
- 15:16for me, purple is a signature
- 15:20that you will always see me in some kind of purple. And in fact,
- 15:24I have my tips purpled right here. So if I'm wearing something else,
- 15:28I still have my purple. My glasses are purple. That is authentic
- 15:32to me. If I. If I'm pretty sure if I walked into the
- 15:35room and I had no purple on and my. Not my purple glasses somewhere,
- 15:39I think my friends would be like, what is wrong? Are you okay?
- 15:43And that's. That's when that authenticity comes, right?
- 15:46Is when the people that you are closest to know and love you.
- 15:50And you're out of line of your authenticity
- 15:54that they're concerned, right? A
- 15:57authenticity is being who you truly
- 16:02who you. Who you know you are deep down. And,
- 16:05you know, that's, you know, are you kind
- 16:09will show up kind, you know, you don't have to be or to be
- 16:13a big, you know, bully, blah, blah, blah, like, be kind, like
- 16:16My, one of my sons, he's very much a tender heart and
- 16:20I love that about him. And I've had to tell people, stop
- 16:24telling them he needs to be stronger or whatever, because who he is
- 16:29is a tender heart. He's tender hearted, he loves deeply.
- 16:33And, and that is a good thing. So. Right.
- 16:36And if you are naturally just strong and have
- 16:40resilience and those kind of things, it's okay to
- 16:44be strong and resilient, but. And then
- 16:47figure out a way how that's going to show up and how it's going to
- 16:50message. So clothing and style is just a way
- 16:54to show up authentically. It is not the only way.
- 16:58It's in our nonverbal language. It's. It's in our
- 17:02posture, it's in our smile, it's in our handshakes. And it's
- 17:05also in that vibe that you put off that your energy
- 17:09and the, and how you treat people. That's a part of
- 17:13authenticity too. And, and your messaging.
- 17:17And, and I hate to do this because I am enjoying this conversation
- 17:20immensely. Yeah, I'm gonna run out of time and get kicked out. Okay,
- 17:24so tell me about your gift and, and three things that people can do,
- 17:29you know, to, to put it to work. Okay, so
- 17:32I have a style freestyle guide that is for
- 17:36you. It's at my website, thejackystyle.com
- 17:40backslash free gift. And it's.
- 17:43There's just some tips and tricks and things to think about as
- 17:47you're going through your personal style, trying to figure out where
- 17:50you're at. Any questions, just let me know. And
- 17:54three things that I want to take have you just take away from
- 17:58that is, you know, figure out what are your three words that
- 18:01you want to. How you want represent when you walk into a room. How, how
- 18:05you want to be remembered. That's a part of the brand, right? Brand is how
- 18:08you're remembered when you're not in a room. And then think
- 18:12of like, look at your closet. Is your closet
- 18:16representing that as you look at that? Look at the closet. And if it's
- 18:19not, the third thing is get rid of the stuff that doesn't
- 18:23speak to you authentically. Who. Speak to who you are authentically. Yeah.
- 18:27Yeah. And. And my quick tip
- 18:31is if you take, you know, this is one of those old classic things is
- 18:35like if you put on your turn all your hangers back. Yeah. And
- 18:39if after a while you haven't touched, you know, turn them back around, then get
- 18:42rid of them. And my sister helped me get over my hoarding
- 18:47and she Said when I give things away, it makes me feel
- 18:51rich. I like that.
- 18:54Which is a wonderful, wonderful sentiment. Okay, so
- 18:58when was the last time you did something new for the first time?
- 19:02I was trying to think about that because I'm constantly out and about and doing
- 19:06stuff. Oh, you know, we went to a new restaurant
- 19:10and it was one of those conveyor belt sushi places. And we just did that
- 19:14last week with my boys. And that was the first time that we'd ever done
- 19:17that. That I. I would like to do that. I
- 19:21would like to do that. All right, I got to put in the commercial and
- 19:24we need to wrap up. So make sure that you subscribe,
- 19:28share and engage on social media about the
- 19:31podcast. And the reason I'm doing it is this is my way
- 19:36of giving back to the community, to introduce you to people
- 19:39that know a lot of different things about a lot of different things
- 19:43so that you can fuel your quest for growth and impact. And I hope that
- 19:46you'll continue to join me with the one small change.
- 19:50You know, see how these tiniest shifts can really yield
- 19:54monumental trans transformations. And you should listen to
- 19:57the first episode to see why I did this and also to hear
- 20:01the quarterly Clarity chat that I do every quarter.
- 20:05So what are your last words of wisdom?
- 20:10You are uniquely and. And specially made. You are
- 20:13a special wonder. There is no one like you. So. So please do not
- 20:17try to be anyone else but who you are authentically.
- 20:22Didn't someone say you can only be the best you that you are?
- 20:25Nobody else can be you. Nobody. Yeah, nobody else can be
- 20:29you. You are the only you. You are the only you. So you
- 20:33are the only you. Yeah. So I. I
- 20:37would say remember that change is simple, but it's not always
- 20:40easy. It requires courage, resilience, and a
- 20:44willingness to step out of your comfort zone if you're not uncomfor,
- 20:48are probably not growing. And if you are not growing, the
- 20:52world is moving forward and you're going to be left behind.
- 20:56You're going to stagnate. So I'm telling you, you know,
- 20:59be uncomfortable and see it as a badge of courage. So I hope you will
- 21:03continue to join me for the one small change as we
- 21:07go on this journey together and come up with
- 21:11some innovative possibilities and a bold vision for ourselves and our
- 21:14business. And until then, stay very curious.
- 21:18Jackie, thank you so much for. For your insights and spending time
- 21:21with us. Thank you for having me.
