- 0:47Yeah.
- 0:47I, with the, with the Lollipop.
- 0:48He's like, who loves you baby?
- 0:50Yeah.
- 0:50You talk about all these shows from like, your childhood.
- 0:53My C child, they were in re they were old when I was young.
- 0:57Kojack was like 19 Sesame sixties.
- 0:59Yeah, but you're an old soul.
- 1:01I mean, I, I never watched MacGyver.
- 1:04I never watched Magnum Pi never watched Nightrider.
- 1:09I never watched Fall Guy.
- 1:11What?
- 1:12Blast Femur.
- 1:13I bet you watched Mash too.
- 1:15Didn't you watch MASH A little bit?
- 1:16I watched TI bet I knew.
- 1:17I knew I didn't like Mash.
- 1:19I thought it was kind of boring.
- 1:20But you know what's funny, Pluto tv, they have a channel
- 1:22dedicated to all these shows.
- 1:24You can just watch 'em.
- 1:25Fantastic.
- 1:25I've got a lot more free time now, so I should go ahead and put that on.
- 1:29Uh, I digress.
- 1:30What do we got today, Eric?
- 1:31Well, I'm gonna start off with an apology to our listeners for your voice.
- 1:36Oh, thanks.
- 1:37Great.
- 1:39Normally when we do like a big thing, like you go to Lama or classic or
- 1:43whatever, we take that month off.
- 1:45But instead we did a recap with William and we took the next month off, but
- 1:49we had a very, very good excuse.
- 1:51Are you sorry for taking the time off or are you sorry for coming back?
- 1:55That depends on the audience.
- 1:56Arbitron is gonna send us new numbers and metrics.
- 1:59It's all gonna work out.
- 2:00Scantron,
- 2:03we had a good excuse.
- 2:04We went to a pro race together for the first time in many years.
- 2:07We went back to our old stomping grounds.
- 2:09We went to an IMSA race at VIR and it got in the way of recording
- 2:14episode 60 at its normal time.
- 2:17So.
- 2:18We're back, which is awesome.
- 2:19And not only are we back, we're back with Brad in the
- 2:22passenger seat, no guest co-host.
- 2:25This month we got the full Brad, full stories, full fun, full comedy,
- 2:29whatever you want to call it.
- 2:30So we're gonna go on a little digital road trip with you because this month's
- 2:34showcase was actually your idea.
- 2:36So you asked me what was in store this month.
- 2:39You tell the audience what's in store, what are we gonna be talking about?
- 2:42The title here says, where did all the good cars go?
- 2:45I don't know if these were necessarily good cars.
- 2:49They were cars that I was interested in or, I mean, I'm sure lots of
- 2:52people were interested in 'cause they, they were the cool cars, the
- 2:56hit cars to have back in the day.
- 2:58Good cars.
- 2:58I think that's debatable.
- 3:00But where did all the good cars go?
- 3:02Well, let's define a good car.
- 3:04Using the lens of our childhood.
- 3:06So what would you have put in that category?
- 3:08Give an example of what you're thinking of.
- 3:10When I was a teenager in high school, lusting after vehicles up through
- 3:15my twenties or whatever it was, the heyday of the nineties cars.
- 3:19So the, the Japanese halo cars, obviously you, your RX sevens, your
- 3:243000 gts, your 300 ZXs, the Supra, of course the Honda Dell Soul.
- 3:31The Honda Dell Soul.
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:32Stop.
- 3:32Stop.
- 3:32Did you just say that the Honda Del Soul?
- 3:35Mm-hmm.
- 3:36The Honda Quaalude had to add in those nineties cars, the mid-engine look
- 3:40with all the front wheel drive trash.
- 3:42That's what Del Soul translates to in English.
- 3:47That made no sense.
- 3:48Why was that car front wheel drive with mid engine unbelievable.
- 3:51And then it had that roll down glass.
- 3:53That partition.
- 3:54Oh, the car was bizarre.
- 3:56Just buy a regular civic.
- 3:58Save yourself the indecency.
- 4:00Just buy a Miata.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:01Oh, there's no point.
- 4:02Buy a Miata.
- 4:03And then the, the Subaru Impreza 2.5 Rs before the WRX came.
- 4:09Yeah, the Acura Integra.
- 4:10You know the Civic sis like all that stuff.
- 4:13You gotta get it right, man.
- 4:14Integra an integral part of my automotive child rearing.
- 4:18Did you notice though, Tanya, in that list, like 99% of those are all Gs.
- 4:23They're all jets.
- 4:23Why?
- 4:24But the problem with the German cars at that time is they were relics from
- 4:29the seventies that were made into poster cars that we all salivate over.
- 4:34You think about the Kunta basically developed in the seventies.
- 4:37If you look at the nine thirties started in the seventies, right.
- 4:40So yeah, you, you make a good point, but I think you're missing my point.
- 4:44My point is the cars that weren't necessarily unobtainium, right.
- 4:49A Kunta was unobtainium any Porsche, you know, it, it is just like
- 4:52something I wouldn't be able to have.
- 4:53That's the problem.
- 4:54They were too expensive German cars.
- 4:57We actually, fun had this conversation with mom the other day.
- 4:59We were talking about the Audi, the red one.
- 5:01That car new in 1990 was like 35,000.
- 5:05She said, not that they got it new 'cause they got it pre-owned or whatever.
- 5:08Well, we went to Connecticut and bought it from those people.
- 5:11$35,000 today.
- 5:12That was an $86,000 car.
- 5:14Mm-hmm.
- 5:15God damn.
- 5:16Yeah.
- 5:16Now granted that car was beyond its time for 1990 with all the features it had.
- 5:21So let me put that in perspective for you.
- 5:23That's the second generation Quatro Coop.
- 5:26The Ur Quatro in 1981 also retailed for $35,000.
- 5:31Would you like to know what?
- 5:32In 20, $25 even more?
- 5:34125 grand.
- 5:37That's base model nine 11 today.
- 5:39How much was Adele Soul in 1997?
- 5:42What it's worth today?
- 5:43Probably $5 in a bucket of chicken.
- 5:45Well, there you go.
- 5:46Right, because what did you have in the nineties?
- 5:47You had the Audi Quatros, some Z car BMWs.
- 5:51The Mercedes was the 500 back then.
- 5:55The one 90 E was like the one 90 thing.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:58You had e thirties as BMWs.
- 6:00The Germans were all still kind of niche products.
- 6:03Yeah.
- 6:03Like BMW had the three series, the five series, the seven series.
- 6:08As far as like cars that I saw on the road, I mean they, they obviously had
- 6:11the eight series and the six series, you know, back in the eighties or whatever.
- 6:15Never saw 'em.
- 6:16We haven't mentioned Volkswagen yet.
- 6:18What did they have in the nineties?
- 6:19They had the carrado.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21Which I knew nothing about, that nobody wanted, for God knows what reason.
- 6:25I knew absolutely nothing about Volkswagen until it was time for me
- 6:29to start buying a car back in 2001.
- 6:32And my friend just randomly said, oh, you should go check out Volkswagen.
- 6:37And the first Volkswagen I ever drove was a turbo beetle.
- 6:41Oh, really?
- 6:42It was before the turbos came out.
- 6:44I drove one, I was so ready to buy it.
- 6:46Wow.
- 6:46It was like called like vortex blue.
- 6:48It was almost like a purplish blue kind of.
- 6:50I was so ready to buy it.
- 6:51And then my buddy was like, man, you're gonna look like a, you know,
- 6:57if you drive that car, you can't get that.
- 6:58But he, he was like, yeah, you, you won't like that car.
- 7:02You should look at the GTI.
- 7:03It's the same car.
- 7:04And then I went and test drove with GTI and was like, oh, it's the same car.
- 7:06So I, I bought the gti I, but before then, I didn't know
- 7:09anything about Volkswagen at all.
- 7:11E even like hanging out with you in high school and stuff, like, I had no clue.
- 7:14Yeah.
- 7:14I knew nothing about cars, but I think going back to your original question,
- 7:17where have all those cars gone?
- 7:19Simple math says that most of them have rotted into the ground at this point
- 7:23because you had some shoddy build quality.
- 7:26All the German cars weren't yet galvanized and you know, they just rotted
- 7:29as you looked at 'em kind of thing.
- 7:30I mean, if you've ever looked at a late mark two golf that doesn't have a, you
- 7:34know, a hole the size of my head somewhere in it that it needs to be patched up.
- 7:38Obviously that car's got a hundred grand of restoration work in it,
- 7:40you know, that kind of thing.
- 7:41But my point is.
- 7:42I think a lot of our generation, we kept our first cars.
- 7:47I, I didn't, you and I have been through so many cars over the
- 7:49years between the two of us.
- 7:50We've passed many people's lifetimes at this point.
- 7:53But like Tanya still has her first car and then has continued
- 7:56to amass cars since then.
- 7:57And so I would've liked to have done the same thing if I had
- 8:00the space, but I don't, I need a warehouse at this point for that.
- 8:03So I think there's people holding onto the cars.
- 8:05I think there's others that saw untimely demise where maybe they
- 8:09got wrecked or destroyed, or a lot of them got turned into track cars.
- 8:12'cause you do see a lot of those nineties cars at SCCA and they're just getting the
- 8:16snot beat out of 'em and stuff like that.
- 8:18So that leaves a really small margin of cars that are left.
- 8:22If you're looking at it from a collector's perspective, now that
- 8:24you have a little bit more liquidity, maybe you know your peak earning
- 8:27potential and you're like, we all fall victim to this as car enthusiasts.
- 8:30I wanna buy the car I had in high school, or I wanna buy the car
- 8:33I lusted after in high school.
- 8:35And that presents a challenge, and I'm gonna bring a real
- 8:38world situation to the table.
- 8:39One of the cars on your list was the Integra.
- 8:42Integra, especially the type R. Like the mid nineties to late nineties type R'S.
- 8:4897, 98, I think they were in their $30,000 price range.
- 8:52MSRP was 12,000 bucks.
- 8:54I looked it up for Integra type R base Integra 12 grand.
- 8:57Right.
- 8:57So type R. Yeah.
- 8:58You're gonna tack on top of that.
- 8:59Right?
- 9:00Because I remember going to the dealership before I got the GTI and
- 9:03I was test driving 'em and I I test drove like a GR RS or, or like a, yeah,
- 9:07whatever the, there was a bunch of different models, GST and blah blah blah.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11The Integra GR dash s or whatever it was.
- 9:15I couldn't afford the the type R. Let's take a base Integra like
- 9:18the plain J and drive it to work.
- 9:19Let's say it's 12 grand in today's dollars.
- 9:22That's only 24,000 bucks, right?
- 9:23'cause you're basically doubling over what it costs 30 years ago.
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:27However, blew my mind when I saw this article come across from
- 9:31the drive A type R recently sold on bring a trailer for $204,000.
- 9:40Even adjusted for inflation.
- 9:41That's not even close to what that thing should be worth in mint condition.
- 9:45I, I'm gonna theorize here, that's somebody that lusted after that
- 9:49car all through their childhood or their parents had one or something.
- 9:54It is their dream car.
- 9:56They have fu money and I'm just gonna do it.
- 9:59I'm just gonna buy the car.
- 10:00I've always wanted.
- 10:01I agree with you.
- 10:02And I could see that scenario if you came and told me it's sold for 50, 65 at most.
- 10:10And I go, yeah, you bought your passion.
- 10:12Maybe it's got no miles.
- 10:13It's got like 5,000 miles on it.
- 10:14You bought a brand new.
- 10:161997 Ty R today, and you just went for it and you spent 50 grand, but 200 grand.
- 10:23That's more than just you money, dude, that's a gambling problem.
- 10:27That's more than some people's houses in the middle of America.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:30But you can buy so much more car.
- 10:32Oh yeah.
- 10:33And so, so that's also part of the problem, like with
- 10:35looking back at these cars.
- 10:36Mm-hmm.
- 10:37The ones that may still be left and it's like, I've got 40 grand and I
- 10:41want to buy a car and I'm reliving my childhood, you know, my youth
- 10:45and nostalgia and yada yada yada.
- 10:47And I want to go buy an RX seven or a 3000 GT or something.
- 10:52They're hard to find or whatever.
- 10:54Mm-hmm.
- 10:55Let's be more realistic.
- 10:56I wanna buy a manual V six Maxima.
- 11:00Oh.
- 11:00Because those cars used to be the shit back in the nineties too.
- 11:02That's true.
- 11:03I give you that.
- 11:04They were quick and I feel like that's more realistic than say like a type R
- 11:07or like a a mark four super or whatever.
- 11:09You go do that, you spend 40 grand on that, and then you're
- 11:12left with a 30-year-old car.
- 11:15Mm-hmm.
- 11:16Whereas someone that we know just went and bought a car that would
- 11:20totally outperform that car.
- 11:23Mm-hmm.
- 11:24Every single way for cheaper.
- 11:26A hundred percent.
- 11:26Or for example, you could go to the dealership right now and pick up a Camry
- 11:29that would outperform, my God, that car that you wasted after in the nineties.
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:34In every single way Camry today would demolish an EG rock.
- 11:38I know.
- 11:38I know.
- 11:39It's ridiculous.
- 11:39Like 300 horsepower out of the box would be embarrassing.
- 11:42I'm glad you went to the Maxima because that brings up another
- 11:45conversation that blossomed on discord over the last month, which is.
- 11:50Another brand that was hot when we were teenagers, which we don't talk about
- 11:54too much today, which is Infiniti, which is a derivative of Nissan, right?
- 11:58During that whole period, Acura was the luxury version of Honda.
- 12:02Lexus, the luxury version of Toyota Infiniti's, the luxury
- 12:04version of Nissan, right?
- 12:05It's a bunch of badge engineering and we lusted over those cars
- 12:07'cause they were different and they were unique and they were cool.
- 12:10And you know, it wasn't a Honda and it wasn't a Toyota.
- 12:12So Nissan, like we've said before, always pushing the boundaries in the JDM space.
- 12:17And I hate to say, with things changing as much as they are at Nissan, some
- 12:22of that might go away in the near future, but that's all to speculation.
- 12:25But when was the last time you saw an infinity?
- 12:29Because I read an article which spawned this whole conversation about how
- 12:32Nissan is going to come out with a new infinity that will revitalize the
- 12:37real wheel drive sports saloon market.
- 12:40Like they're gonna take on BMW and the M three and the M four and
- 12:44the M five with this new Infinity.
- 12:46And I'm like, they're already kind of doing that though because the Infinity
- 12:49Q sixties have the same motor as the 400 horsepower Z. We need to reverse for
- 12:54a second before we go down this road.
- 12:56Oh, do we?
- 12:57Yes.
- 12:57Because what?
- 12:581990s Infinity was cool.
- 13:01That's where I was.
- 13:01'cause the G 37 came out in the two thousands, 2013 there was the I 30.
- 13:07There was the Q like 80 or whatever they were.
- 13:10All those weird little cel looking infinities.
- 13:14Didn't they have the M 45?
- 13:15That big boat?
- 13:16That thing was gangster.
- 13:17That was like early two thousands.
- 13:19That car was awesome.
- 13:21I loved that car.
- 13:22The G 20 at the end tail end of the nineties.
- 13:25The G 30 came out the same time as the three 50 Z did.
- 13:28Well, hold on.
- 13:28Lemme, I'm gonna look this up.
- 13:29See, we don't know Jack about infinity, that's the problem.
- 13:32That's because nobody gives a crap.
- 13:35They did a terrible job of marketing those two.
- 13:37So there was the 2008, the Infinity G 35.
- 13:42Again, we still haven't hit anything.
- 13:44So the two quote, coolest infinities, still have yet to have been born.
- 13:49The two thousands is still in our window of opportunity.
- 13:532008. You're an adult.
- 13:56You sure about that?
- 13:57Full adult at a real job.
- 14:00There was the Q 45, which is like the big, like ls, yeah.
- 14:05Luxury sedan kind of thing.
- 14:06There's the M 30, still not in the nineties.
- 14:10Yeah, the Q 45.
- 14:11Yeah, it was, it was 2006 Infinity, Q 45, 19 90, 19 96.
- 14:16Right.
- 14:16I remember the I 20 was basically a Sentra that was hopped up the G 20.
- 14:21I thought there was an I 20 as well.
- 14:22G 20 basically looks like a G 37.
- 14:24The G 20 was the entry level luxury sedan.
- 14:27The J 30 was the one that kind of ripped off Jaguar's look.
- 14:31Yeah, that was that really amorphous one.
- 14:34That was like a marshmallow on wheels.
- 14:35I remember that one.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:36And then the, the QX four was the Pathfinder.
- 14:40Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:41You're right.
- 14:41So anyway, they had some stuff out there.
- 14:43Okay.
- 14:44All right.
- 14:45But the point is when you go down the road.
- 14:47When was the last time you saw an infinity?
- 14:49Every morning When I see that blue G 37.
- 14:52That's the only one I see.
- 14:54Ran when parked.
- 14:55What infinity, are you talking like an infinity from the
- 14:57nineties and early two thousands?
- 14:59Or like any infinity because I, I see infinities all the time.
- 15:02I couldn't tell you when.
- 15:03I've seen a nineties one.
- 15:04I saw a QX four at the shop when I was getting my vehicle inspection.
- 15:08You mostly see the SUVs now?
- 15:11Yeah.
- 15:11Yeah, because they have the same motor as the Nissan Z.
- 15:14They've got the VQ or whatever.
- 15:15Yes, the newer ones.
- 15:17Okay.
- 15:17The SUVs on the road.
- 15:18That's fine.
- 15:19All the dealerships that I knew of in the area have dried up.
- 15:22I don't know where there's an Infinity dealership anymore, so I'm
- 15:25not even gonna worry about that.
- 15:26There's one down the road.
- 15:27Oh my God, you guys are the worst.
- 15:28I don't even know.
- 15:29I couldn't have told you where an Infinity dealer was 20 years ago, let alone today.
- 15:33I think it's one of those things that when you're thinking about 'em, then you see
- 15:37them everywhere, but because you don't think about them, you don't see them.
- 15:40Selective vision.
- 15:41No.
- 15:41My point is.
- 15:42No one is thinking about Infiniti.
- 15:44Nobody's considering it as a brand.
- 15:47And if you told me, Hey, I'm gonna go spend 60, $70,000 on a competitive product
- 15:53between an Infiniti and A BMW, when you roll up, I don't know, wherever you work,
- 15:58the office or the golf course, or wherever you're taking your car, what's gonna carry
- 16:02the status if I can, dollar for dollar.
- 16:04I'm gonna buy the BMW, I'm not gonna buy an Infinity.
- 16:06Like it's a weird space to be in and it's a weird space for Nissan to target
- 16:11to try to build back their brand.
- 16:13It's like sell a cool Nissan Saloon.
- 16:17Not an Infinity.
- 16:18A brand that people don't recognize.
- 16:20Gotta sell a cooler Ultima baby.
- 16:22You gotta those Altimas, to your point, the problems with the
- 16:26Infinity, it's trying to compete, but it doesn't compete on any level.
- 16:30Correct.
- 16:31It can't compete with BMW.
- 16:33'cause like you're saying, it doesn't have the panache, it
- 16:35doesn't have the performance, it doesn't have the wow factor.
- 16:38Yep.
- 16:38Certainly doesn't compete with Lexus because it doesn't have the
- 16:41reliability, so it's sort of a dud.
- 16:43Yeah.
- 16:43Good for them.
- 16:44Nissan is coming out, hopefully cross the fingers.
- 16:47More cars with manual transmissions.
- 16:49We'll talk about that in a little bit.
- 16:50If they're gonna add another one to the fleet, I would love to
- 16:53see this as some of the four door Nissans that are sold in Japan.
- 16:58Just go with the Nissan brand, a brand that people recognize.
- 17:01We'll leave that where it is.
- 17:02Do we remember the time the Infinity commercials?
- 17:05The guy with the Apple, they have commercials.
- 17:08Ah, with the Apple.
- 17:09Wouldn't that an Infinity commercial?
- 17:10That like British actor Dude, British.
- 17:12He, he was the guy who was in Pirates of the Caribbean as the governor or whatever.
- 17:16I think it was that dude.
- 17:17No, it wasn't him.
- 17:18No, it wasn't that dude.
- 17:19No, I'm confusing him with someone else then.
- 17:21Because he did car commercials.
- 17:22The guy from Pirates of the Caribbean did car commercials.
- 17:24Hold on.
- 17:25Lemme see if I can find it.
- 17:26You're gonna make me look it up.
- 17:27Oh my God, I see him.
- 17:29He's in a tuxedo though.
- 17:30He's not eating an apple.
- 17:31What is his name?
- 17:32It's, isn't it Jonathan Price?
- 17:34That is the guy from Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 17:36But that's not the guy I am thinking of.
- 17:37That's not the guy I'm thinking of.
- 17:39I said, so maybe I'm thinking of a different commercial of the same time.
- 17:44This isn't the guy.
- 17:45Yes, Jonathan Price did car commercials for infinity.
- 17:48Boom.
- 17:49Then I'm thinking of something else.
- 17:50Then see my memory is still good.
- 17:54All right, so talking about cars from our youths, one of the cars that went
- 17:59up on the wall as an affordable supercar was the NSX by today's standards.
- 18:04You look at an original NSX 19 90 91, you're like, man, it looks like
- 18:09it should transform into an autobot.
- 18:11Just be fighting the decepticon or something like it is a little stodgy.
- 18:14Obviously they refined it as they went on.
- 18:16I was never a fan of the one with those frog eyed headlights.
- 18:19The little bubbles.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:21I didn't light didn't like those at all.
- 18:22But Tanya found this interesting article about how Honda has decided that they're
- 18:27going to start making parts for the NSXs, and I was like, there's a market for that.
- 18:32Really.
- 18:33Well see.
- 18:33This isn't a new concept though.
- 18:35Oh no, not at all.
- 18:36On a previous.
- 18:38Drive through.
- 18:39Mercedes was doing the same thing for some of their old pieces of junk.
- 18:43Three years to design a knob.
- 18:44That's for like a cigarette lighter, right?
- 18:47Knobs designed by knobs, but that's not the only manufacturer
- 18:51turning up the way back machine.
- 18:52Is it Tanya?
- 18:53No.
- 18:53'cause Toyota is doing the same thing for the AE 86.
- 18:56Apparently you can get new heads and new motors.
- 18:59Nice.
- 18:59You're telling me you can buy a brand new 2026, we'll call
- 19:03it four a GE Twin cam initial D goes to 11,000 RPM kind of thing.
- 19:08Apparently slightly upgraded.
- 19:10So like they have made them better so they're not pulled out of the 1980s vault
- 19:15or anything like that, but they bolt in.
- 19:17The cool part about these motors, I have come to understand that the
- 19:21original four a GE was basically a duplicate of a cos word like race motor.
- 19:26That's why they were so durable and so strong and made so much power and they
- 19:29could rev to like literally 11,000 RPM.
- 19:32So with all that engineering in it, that's like one of the most sought after normally
- 19:37aspirated motors, like of all time.
- 19:38So that's really cool to see this come back.
- 19:41Now the question is, how much is it gonna cost to buy a motor from Toyota?
- 19:45Probably cheaper than a coyote.
- 19:47Probably cheaper than that.
- 19:48Integra R, there you go.
- 19:50Would you rather spend $200,000 on a Integra R or
- 19:54probably $50,000 on this motor?
- 19:56The question becomes how much does the 80 86.
- 19:59Cost without a motor in it, because getting those cars was already
- 20:03difficult 20 years ago when they were half as old as they are now.
- 20:07You're importing them from Japan.
- 20:09You buy the motor and then you put it in a new GR 86.
- 20:13Okay, here you go.
- 20:14So on bat.
- 20:15You can get 1986 Toyota Corolla.
- 20:18GTS Liftback five speed.
- 20:20So that's not the full out ano one I guess.
- 20:22I don't know which one that would be, but $19,000, that's not horrendous.
- 20:27And a two JZ, GTE powered 86 SR five Sport Liftback, five speed track car ano
- 20:35basically sold recently for 22 or 21.
- 20:38That's a good deal.
- 20:39That's a good deal.
- 20:40Two Jay-Z in that.
- 20:41That's a rocket ship.
- 20:43It's a race car.
- 20:44It's gutted, caged, everything.
- 20:46I would run that.
- 20:47That's awesome.
- 20:48Spoken by someone who has two gutted cage race cars in his driveway right now.
- 20:53Hopefully three at some point in my life, but we'll get there.
- 20:56Switching gears from that.
- 20:57Somebody had a note here that said, in reference to the whole
- 21:01Infinity thing, Jaguar was another brand we hadn't seen in a while.
- 21:05And obviously there's been some change of ownership and all sorts
- 21:08of stuff going on over Jaguar now.
- 21:10It's funny, Jaguar came up in a conversation recently with Tanya as
- 21:13we were doing some car exploration, and there's some really good
- 21:17deals out there on Jags, depending on what you're looking for.
- 21:20Forgot about this.
- 21:21Did you guys see this most recent one that they literally unveiled
- 21:25at Monterey Car Week this year, and this is why nobody thinks of Jaguar.
- 21:30It looks like a crown.
- 21:31It looks fake.
- 21:32Yes, it looks like something out of Batman.
- 21:35The Animated series, cartoon Show.
- 21:36Again from the nineties.
- 21:38I was gonna say Dick Tracy, but it's too modern to be like a dick Tracy.
- 21:41But it's that cartoonish level of design.
- 21:44Nothing about this says Jaguar to me.
- 21:47No, I don't.
- 21:47This doesn't say anything.
- 21:49It's like a child did this.
- 21:52Actually, I don't.
- 21:53I, I am.
- 21:53The more I'm looking at it, I kind of like it.
- 21:55Don't say that kinda like it.
- 21:56I don't like that.
- 21:57It's gonna be $130,000.
- 21:59That's cheap compared to a nine 11.
- 22:01You gotta compare it to nine 11 now it's cheap.
- 22:02It's cheap.
- 22:03Compared to an Integra, a hundred percent.
- 22:05People already don't like the Jaguar Land Rover rebrand thing that's been
- 22:09going on, and the logo people are like, just put it back the way it was.
- 22:13Why did we get rid of the leaping Jaguar?
- 22:15You know?
- 22:16And all the stuff that goes with and the legacy that goes with it.
- 22:18They kind of checked it all at the door.
- 22:19The car is just awful.
- 22:21I'm like, I'm sorry.
- 22:22I think there's some other brands that have lost their way, but these
- 22:25guys don't even know where to start.
- 22:26Just go back into your catalog of cars.
- 22:29Would you prefer an auto manufacturer to think out of the box and take a swing?
- 22:34Granted it's a swing and a miss, or would you prefer an auto manufacturer
- 22:38to keep going back to the same Dried up?
- 22:41Well, of badge engineering and bringing back the Camaro, bringing back the
- 22:47Dart, bringing back the Challenger, the charger, the Hornet, all these old names.
- 22:52Slapping them on pieces of shit.
- 22:55I see where you're going with that.
- 22:56Bangled era.
- 22:57BMWs, ugh, they swung, they missed kind of That's another car.
- 23:02You don't see them anywhere?
- 23:03No, no.
- 23:04Never see 'em.
- 23:04I never see, they don't even make good track cars.
- 23:06People don't want 'em for that either.
- 23:07You know?
- 23:07I see more E 30 nines.
- 23:10Yeah, and more E 30 sixes and like that era than I do.
- 23:13Bangal era.
- 23:14Jag has this.
- 23:15Opportunity to go back into a very rich catalog of retro
- 23:22redesigns if they want to.
- 23:23'cause they've never really done it right?
- 23:25'cause if you think about it, there's been companies like we saw what was the
- 23:28Eagle that redid the E type JAG 20 years ago on top gear and stuff like that.
- 23:33And then you had Jags that run all the guys that were trying
- 23:36to make their X jss reliable.
- 23:38And then there's some other really nice jags that came out during, you know,
- 23:43the not so great periods of Jaguar, you know, the tail end before Ford
- 23:46bought em and all that kinda stuff.
- 23:48That's what they're trying to do with this.
- 23:49They're creating that long bonnet thing, but it looks nothing like an XJS.
- 23:53Just bring back that design.
- 23:54Modernize it, add the safety and put a reliable engine in it.
- 23:57That's all people really want.
- 23:58Those are things that make it not a jag.
- 24:02Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 24:03So instead we come up with this cartoon monstrosity.
- 24:06To me, I, I would prefer that companies did do a halo car every now and again
- 24:11and do an homage to their past so that people can identify through the
- 24:16generations, like, eh, man, I know what it means to be a Jag owner.
- 24:20Like, I really like that XJS, or, I really like that E type,
- 24:23or I really want that MK one 20.
- 24:25You know, that they remade for a couple years or whatever it is.
- 24:28And I think they could go back and re stylize some of those old
- 24:32cars because some of those were as aerodynamic back then as they are today.
- 24:37The link I just sent you, this is what you want.
- 24:39Oh Lord have mercy.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:40And then, and what happened is people would go into the dealership just
- 24:43to look at and be near those cars.
- 24:46And they would walk out with something else that they could afford.
- 24:49Did you see this jacket that she sent?
- 24:50Brad?
- 24:51This, I would drive this posting this in the show notes.
- 24:53I, I saw it.
- 24:54This is hot.
- 24:55Didn't Jeremy Clarkson drive something like that?
- 24:58Jeremy's had his butt in so many cars.
- 25:00Who knows?
- 25:01This is hot.
- 25:02Like you wanna be a Batman villain?
- 25:04This is the car right here.
- 25:06This is awesome.
- 25:08Painted it purple.
- 25:09That's what the Joker ride.
- 25:10And to me the last great Jaguar was the XJ two 20.
- 25:13Going back to our childhood.
- 25:15No, no, no, no.
- 25:16I think the F type is a great Jag.
- 25:17It's not a real Jag though.
- 25:19That's one of these later Jags.
- 25:20Okay, then like the XJR, the supercharged Ford V eight.
- 25:24Ah.
- 25:25But see, Ford had its hands in that, was it a great car?
- 25:28No, it was trash.
- 25:29The XJ two 20 was the last great Jag.
- 25:32Like everything about that was Jag.
- 25:34But the whole controversy around that car is, it was a complete disappointment.
- 25:38Like they could never prove that it would go two 20.
- 25:41First of all, have you ever seen anybody do a test of that car where they actually
- 25:44hit two 20 and that was the whole point.
- 25:46I dunno, how fast did that transit van go on top gear that they put the body.
- 25:50Weren't they racing a diesel jag?
- 25:52They did do that too.
- 25:53Yeah.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:54So anyway, Jaguar's, another one of those brands like Infiniti, where
- 25:57it's like if, if they're not doing their marketing right, they're
- 26:00not gonna get anybody's attention.
- 26:01And when you're looking dollar for dollar to Tanya's point $130,000, there's a
- 26:05lot of car you can buy for 130 grand.
- 26:07It's not gonna be that cartoon thing we saw at Car Week just off the cuff
- 26:11thinking of a brand that nobody that we haven't seen in a really long
- 26:14time, whatever happened to day, woo.
- 26:18Oh my god.
- 26:18What was that sound done?
- 26:24Dew.
- 26:25Suzuki.
- 26:25Isuzu.
- 26:26You know the thing that killed me about Dew is that their emblem was the
- 26:29seashell thing, and I always thought about the three seashells demolition.
- 26:34Man.
- 26:37He doesn't know how to use the seashells.
- 26:39The date was a piece of shit too.
- 26:40Anyway, but Tanya, you might have something for Brad to bring him
- 26:44back to our high school days.
- 26:45Another car that can make a comeback.
- 26:47Lord have mercy apparently.
- 26:50Electric Dodge Neon.
- 26:56I will say I like those wheels.
- 26:59You know, chat.
- 27:00GPT is amazing.
- 27:02It literally says that somebody designed this with chat, GPT.
- 27:09There is something timeless about the original neon.
- 27:12It is one of those shapes that, okay, you could claim that it's
- 27:15dated, especially from the backside.
- 27:17But if, to your point, Brad, if you go back to the well and you
- 27:20clean up some of those designs, you could reintroduce 'em today.
- 27:23You need to shut up.
- 27:25You just sit.
- 27:26The Dodge Neon is a timeless design.
- 27:30We're not talking about a work of art here.
- 27:32It's a goddamn, it's an acno Dodge from the nineties.
- 27:36Timeless.
- 27:37It's timeless 'cause it's a four-door sedan and that's it.
- 27:41There's nothing special about that car.
- 27:44Hi Neon.
- 27:45It is a Dacia Sandero.
- 27:47Oh man.
- 27:47There's another brand.
- 27:48No neons then The timeless Neon.
- 27:51But to, to the point of the article, an electric neon makes sense.
- 27:54I mean, neon in the name, I mean it, it just makes sense.
- 27:57Sure.
- 27:57Well, it's like the Beatle coming back as electric, which hopefully
- 28:00that happens, but it probably never will because Volkswagen can't see
- 28:04past it in their own schnitzel.
- 28:05Speaking of nineties cars and classic timeless designs and car
- 28:10manufacturers, we don't see anymore.
- 28:12The Saturn.
- 28:13Oh no, that's like cursing in church.
- 28:17So Saturn, if you look it up, it's like how do we take a vox
- 28:21hall and a opal bastardize them and then say, you know what?
- 28:25We can make it worse.
- 28:26We'll call it Saturn.
- 28:27That's what those cards are.
- 28:29And then there's that guy down the roads, got like nine of 'em so bad.
- 28:32They had those body panels that you could like kick and throw
- 28:35things at and Oh, that's right.
- 28:37That was part of their team.
- 28:37Right?
- 28:37They the cyber trucks before the cyber trucks were cyber trucks.
- 28:40Yeah, they were made of Tupperwares.
- 28:42It's like ridiculous.
- 28:44The body cladding, they go.
- 28:46When you open the door.
- 28:48Oh man.
- 28:48So, oh good.
- 28:49That that bring, that brings up a really good point.
- 28:51'cause doesn't the Tesla fart when you open the, when you
- 28:54ask it to open its butt hole.
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:56It's pretty.
- 28:56Baby Elon is like a closet.
- 28:58Saturn fan wouldn't surprise me.
- 29:01He's a closet something.
- 29:02We won't go there.
- 29:03As we wrap up this showcase we've been talking about where did the cars
- 29:07from our childhood go, you know, when we started driving the cars that we
- 29:10lusted after the things that we wanted.
- 29:12And you know, I mentioned Monterey Car Week because that also
- 29:15transpired during our month off.
- 29:17So there's been a lot of coverage and a lot of things.
- 29:19And so I got a newsletter from the Porsche Club and as I scrolled through
- 29:25it, I had to reread it like 10 times because I'm like, you guys actually
- 29:29posted what I'm about to read to you in public to tens of thousands of people.
- 29:34And I'm like, this is the problem.
- 29:36Partially with what you're talking about, Brad, what you're describing,
- 29:39and I'm just gonna read this to you 'cause I, I just don't know how to react
- 29:42to it and I want your guys' feedback.
- 29:43So here goes quote.
- 29:44Monterey Car Week continues to evolve.
- 29:47The one thing that Car Week 2025 proved beyond a shadow of a doubt is that
- 29:52millennials and Gen Zers love cars.
- 29:55And while big money might be heavily concentrated in the hands
- 29:59of relatively few of them, those that have it are willing to spend
- 30:03it on more than just avocado toast.
- 30:05End quote.
- 30:06That was in their newsletter.
- 30:08And I said, okay, boomer.
- 30:10So we're already being snubbed by the collector market because it's all the
- 30:15older guys, our parents' generation and our grandparents if they're still with us.
- 30:19And I'm like, you put that in your newsletter.
- 30:21You didn't think I was gonna read that?
- 30:23You don't think I'm in that demographic?
- 30:24What, what?
- 30:25Seriously?
- 30:26I I I'm gonna get off my soapbox.
- 30:28Go ahead.
- 30:28You do get down on some avocado toast though.
- 30:31I mean it's good for you.
- 30:31Good avocado toast, man.
- 30:33With a fried egg on.
- 30:34It got good protein and stuff.
- 30:35A little bit of oil and salt and pepper.
- 30:37This is unreal.
- 30:38I think boomer's gonna boomer that.
- 30:40Make it right.
- 30:41Yeah.
- 30:41Mean I know it doesn't make it right, but it, there's nothing we can do about it.
- 30:44We just gotta wait for 'em all to die.
- 30:46Then we can inherit all the cool cars we don't want.
- 30:49We just need to out weight them.
- 30:51Then we'll start our own boomer like car collection.
- 30:55Before we get off this topic, I was gonna bring up a question
- 30:57or pose a question to the panel.
- 30:59Hmm.
- 31:00Thinking about what we just talked about, you know, looking 30 years into the future
- 31:04from now, so 2055, what cars on the road today do you see surviving 25 years and
- 31:12what cars are you expecting not to see?
- 31:15And we have the same conversation about them 25 in 30 years.
- 31:18First on the list, like cockroaches that will survive nuclear winter.
- 31:22The Altima?
- 31:23Yeah, well the Altima 2025 Altima still going strong followed by any Na Miata.
- 31:30Those will still be running around 50 years from now.
- 31:33And then I think outside of that cars that you know, my kids might be lusting after,
- 31:38is gonna be Mazda threes Hyundai Veloster.
- 31:43Jeep Wranglers, like all the same stuff.
- 31:45We lusted after hot hatches, SUVs and CUVs.
- 31:48'cause there's a ton of those on the road.
- 31:49And because they were affordable.
- 31:51Exactly.
- 31:52There you go.
- 31:52They weren't seen as unobtainium.
- 31:53But before we completely close out this showcase, Brad, we gotta do a little
- 31:57dashboard confessional, because you did just recently acquire one of your
- 32:02high school sweethearts, didn't you?
- 32:03Yeah.
- 32:04Mm-hmm.
- 32:04Mm-hmm.
- 32:05This would be my, let's see, one.
- 32:07Gotta keep your pants on if you gotta count that high.
- 32:09This will be my fifth VW GTI.
- 32:11Yeah.
- 32:11One of 'em wasn't a GTI, but yeah.
- 32:13No, my sixth, my my fifth mark.
- 32:15Four.
- 32:15Can you tell the audience a little bit about the new acquisition?
- 32:18Right now it is dead on the mountain.
- 32:23It's covered in dirt and moss and mold and crap.
- 32:28But pop the hood.
- 32:30Hood we will overnight parts from Japan.
- 32:32It's a 2000 GTI 180.
- 32:35What color is it?
- 32:36It is dirt orange?
- 32:38No, it's, it's called Tropic orange, I think, but we're more affectionately
- 32:42calling it pumpkin spiced latte.
- 32:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:45You're PSL because it was purchased in the fall and, and it's only
- 32:49around for a limited time.
- 32:52I like, that's really good.
- 32:54But you know, this is gonna be a first.
- 32:56We've done tons of Mark IVs over the years and we have a lot of experience with
- 32:59those cars, but they started out running, this one ran parts, but we have never,
- 33:06ever resurrected a car from the mountain.
- 33:09I don't know if we know what we're getting ourselves into.
- 33:11Well, who wants to resurrect a Taurus or a Mercury Sable?
- 33:15I nowhere.
- 33:16There's a neon too, Tanya, to your point, I actually was looking at that car.
- 33:20Every time I go up to the mountain I'm like, you know, I could do this.
- 33:23I could do this car.
- 33:24But then I remember it's a neon.
- 33:26It's a neon with a Mitsubishi 16 valve, though.
- 33:28It's the good neon.
- 33:29But I could drive that timeless design in that timeless brown color.
- 33:35Brown.
- 33:35Yeah.
- 33:36Another timeless design that's better than a neon is Mark four Volkswagen.
- 33:40You know, that's the last golf.
- 33:42That still looks like a golf to me.
- 33:44They, they look like little bulldogs.
- 33:47Yeah, they do.
- 33:47They do look, especially when you fix 'em up.
- 33:49They're pretty aggressive.
- 33:50So I'm looking forward to turning wrenches with you and working on this project.
- 33:53I think it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 33:54But I also feel like Gene Wilder and Young Frankenstein and we're, when we
- 33:58do get it running alive, it's a lie.
- 34:03It's a alive,
- 34:06it's gonna be a process.
- 34:08Yeah, for sure.
- 34:09At least it's not going to the track.
- 34:10Well, you never know.
- 34:11We gotta shake it down.
- 34:12Right?
- 34:12It's not going to be built like a track car.
- 34:15Yes.
- 34:15I'll put it it that way.
- 34:16It's, that's, I, I took Eddie too far.
- 34:18Pumpkin spice is gonna be something nice.
- 34:21It's gonna be a good blend.
- 34:23Just a kid.
- 34:24That'll be a nice little spicy blend.
- 34:27Does it come with that cardboard sleeve just so you don't burn yourself?
- 34:30Yeah, it should.
- 34:30It should.
- 34:31Alright.
- 34:31Well we're gonna move on to our regularly scheduled ranting and raving.
- 34:35Continuing with Volkswagen and Audi News.
- 34:39All right.
- 34:39I feel like this next article from Haggerty Signals the
- 34:43swan song for the golf R.
- 34:46Okay.
- 34:46When they do something like this, Volkswagen is notorious for doing
- 34:49weird stuff like putting, oh, I don't know, the RS three five cylinder
- 34:53turbo in the next golf R before they discontinue it all together.
- 34:57That's the dot, dot dot.
- 34:59That's missing from this article, and that's where I'm reading between the
- 35:02lines, because if you build a golf R with that motor making 450 horsepower like
- 35:08the TTRS did, and all the other cars that came with that power plant and all wheel
- 35:11drive and the flappy paddles and all the wonderful things that accompanied that
- 35:16engine and drive, train configuration.
- 35:18How do you top that?
- 35:19You can't, again, to me signals, that's the end of the golf R. All I am
- 35:24thinking about right now is in a couple years, my boys will be out of daycare.
- 35:29I'll no longer be paying for daycare and I will be picking up eight Rs,
- 35:32three powered golf R, or I'll just pick up an RS three 'cause the motor's
- 35:37already in it and they'll be cheaper.
- 35:38I just want the motor.
- 35:40I don't care about the rest of it.
- 35:41You know?
- 35:41Let me put that in something else and let's go from there.
- 35:44Put that in a neon.
- 35:45The timeless design.
- 35:47Shut up
- 35:55that five cylinder sound though.
- 35:57That's what sells it, right?
- 35:59It's, I mean, 'cause you can make 400 horsepower out of something else.
- 36:02You can make 400 horsepower to one eight Turbo.
- 36:04I know for a fact, but it doesn't sound the same.
- 36:06Right.
- 36:06It's gonna sound more like a rally card.
- 36:08The five cylinders just got, oh, it's got that snarl to it.
- 36:11You know what I mean?
- 36:11Yep.
- 36:27Speaking of five cylinder sounds.
- 36:29Remember a couple drive-throughs back.
- 36:31Audi had made an announcement that they were changing their design language for
- 36:36the next generation Audis, starting with whatever chassis number they're on now.
- 36:39And so the Audi Club of America put out the pictures of what the concept car
- 36:44looks like for this new design language.
- 36:46But what I thought was hilarious was, and quote comes with virtual gearbox
- 36:50and synthetic five cylinder sounds.
- 36:53This was designed by the same person that designed the Jaguar.
- 36:56I was just about to say, they partnered, they must have partnered together.
- 36:59I love how they call this the vision for the future.
- 37:01You know, a new era of clarity was Ronnie Millsap behind this 'cause that
- 37:05guy can't see, you know what I'm saying?
- 37:08Penn and Farina was busy, so they got SpongeBob.
- 37:10No, Penn and Farina ISS not busy.
- 37:12'cause Ferrari put them on the curb.
- 37:15Why don't they go pick up those guys?
- 37:16No.
- 37:16What they did is they got rid of Juro and now we've got this.
- 37:20What is this?
- 37:21What is this?
- 37:22Is this the Rose Meyer from the early two thousands?
- 37:25Like what is this?
- 37:25It went from Jaro to Dijo.
- 37:34That's good.
- 37:34That's really good.
- 37:36Well, if that wasn't enough, this next one is what signals my final
- 37:41nail in the Volkswagen coffin.
- 37:43Like I've been exiting this stage for a while and it's been a very,
- 37:47very tough journey because we have had Volkswagens in the family nonstop
- 37:52since the 1950s and it's very hard to like break the brand loyalty.
- 37:56Right?
- 37:57But I'll just read this to you, even Volkswagen.
- 38:00Is doing horsepower subscriptions.
- 38:03Now for an extra $22 a month, you can get 27 more horsepower in an electric car.
- 38:09This just makes people never want to buy an electric car.
- 38:12This makes people never want to buy Volkswagens.
- 38:14Why would you do stupid stuff like that?
- 38:16Well, BMW did this before, not with a horsepower.
- 38:19And doesn't Tesla do this with their horsepower too?
- 38:21At some point?
- 38:22It's an electric car thing.
- 38:23I think it is not a good thing though.
- 38:25Oh, no, it's not a good thing.
- 38:27Just like everybody that's canceling their Disney and Hulu subscriptions
- 38:30right now, what happens when the AI chatbot that you cancel your horsepower
- 38:34subscription to goes, thank you.
- 38:35Your membership has been canceled.
- 38:37Now your car doesn't start.
- 38:38I'm sorry, I'm done.
- 38:40There is no infinite wisdom here.
- 38:42There's no foresight and there's also rumors.
- 38:44You hear all sorts of stuff about Porsches walking back, the electric cayenne or
- 38:48whatever it's called, and they're gonna go back to gas and all this and you
- 38:52know, it's all this hokey pokey stuff.
- 38:53And then we're getting the five cylinder turbo in the golf RO.
- 38:56Okay, whatever Volkswagen, they've just lost their way.
- 38:59I'm sorry, I've said it before.
- 39:00I'll say it again.
- 39:02So Brad.
- 39:03In the showcase, we talked about reaching back into the coffers and
- 39:06kind of pulling out old designs and bringing them back to life with a
- 39:10little bit of STIs persuasion here.
- 39:13Ferrari reveals the first new tester since the 1990s.
- 39:18Badge engineering just like everybody else.
- 39:21Yeah.
- 39:21This thing's ugly.
- 39:22I don't see it.
- 39:24There are certain Ferraris that are just timeless.
- 39:27Is that the word?
- 39:29This episode is timeless.
- 39:31This episode is, this episode is powered by or sponsored by Timex.
- 39:35They're iconic.
- 39:36There you go.
- 39:37That's, yes.
- 39:37Iconic.
- 39:38Like the tester.
- 39:39There's nothing else that looks like.
- 39:42It's like an F 40.
- 39:43There's nothing else that looks like it.
- 39:45It was the same with the original Kosh and then they redesigned that.
- 39:48Yeah, there's nothing else that looked like those.
- 39:50And it's like this doesn't even, I don't know.
- 39:52This doesn't even whisper tester.
- 39:54No.
- 39:55It whispers more SF 90.
- 39:57Yes, because it's gonna replace the SF 90.
- 39:59Where are the gills on the side?
- 40:01The strikes as they like to call 'em?
- 40:02Yeah, whatever they were called.
- 40:03Yeah.
- 40:04It looks more like what was the predecessor to the F 40?
- 40:08No, I think it looks like the 365 Daytona in the front.
- 40:12It looks like the picture of the red front Honda could have made
- 40:15this and called it another NSX.
- 40:17That's true too.
- 40:18From the back, it looks like every other new Ferrari, the SP two and all those
- 40:22prototype E LA Ferrari things, the front because of that black stripe and those
- 40:26little orange things that come down.
- 40:28That reminds me of the Daytona.
- 40:29But it doesn't scream Testa at all.
- 40:32No.
- 40:32So the real question is, which they don't show us a picture of the motor.
- 40:36Does it have red heads?
- 40:37'cause if it doesn't have red heads then it's stupid, but it's got blue seats.
- 40:41Well, it's got red head covers, uh, whatever.
- 40:45Yeah, it's got red heads.
- 40:46I found some other pictures when I saw the first pictures of this.
- 40:49'cause obviously I talked to William from the Ferrari marketplace all the time and
- 40:52he's in the know on this kind of stuff.
- 40:54I immediately asked him when I saw the pictures, like,
- 40:56would Don Johnson drive this?
- 40:58And he's like, hell no.
- 41:03So to me that's sort of the litmus test.
- 41:05Like if Don Johnson, Miami Vice, they had a tester, if he
- 41:09wouldn't drive this, it'll sell.
- 41:10But it's gonna sell to a totally different demographic of
- 41:13people that know what it means.
- 41:15But regardless, I, I think it's stupid.
- 41:18No, no, no.
- 41:18This might also be the same reaction that people that were alive to see, the 1957
- 41:26original tester, Rosas, you know, with the pontoon fenders and all that, when
- 41:30the one in the eighties came out, they go, this looks nothing like the tester
- 41:34DA, because it was a complete step away.
- 41:37Right?
- 41:37The design language was all wedge and then the classic straights
- 41:40that we know and all that kind.
- 41:42So we're seeing that again, and maybe, and this is what I'm
- 41:45saying, just a word of caution.
- 41:46We have to be a little bit more open-minded about the design, but as a
- 41:49purist, it doesn't do anything for me.
- 41:52I think it's old man yells at cloud.
- 41:55You know, to your point, we had the same argument when the Kunta
- 41:58came out, the new Kosh, the general consensus was, at least in my view,
- 42:03I thought it was a great looking car.
- 42:05I, I loved it, but it shouldn't be called Kunta.
- 42:07Yes.
- 42:08But at least when you looked at it, you could see Kunta, DNA.
- 42:12In it, even though you knew it was a Mercy Lago or whatever it was
- 42:16underneath a Ventor or whatever, underneath whatever, right?
- 42:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:19But this, yeah.
- 42:19You don't see nineties Testa Rosa at all?
- 42:22No.
- 42:23And you don't see fifties?
- 42:24No.
- 42:24No, definitely not.
- 42:26Other than the actual heads being red, you don't see anything.
- 42:29I mean, if you put a McLaren badge on it, I wouldn't know the difference, maybe.
- 42:33But any rate, Brad, guess what?
- 42:35We thought we could get away with it.
- 42:36We got some Mercedes news thanks to Tanya.
- 42:39Why are we wasting our time with this Once a year.
- 42:41We do this once a year, so, okay, so here's the punchline.
- 42:44Is a Benz still a Benz?
- 42:46If it's powered by A BMW?
- 42:48The zebra is powered by A BMW.
- 42:51One of the greatest cars ever made in the history of cars.
- 42:54The McLaren F1 is powered by A BMW.
- 42:58Yeah, I get that.
- 42:59Mm-hmm.
- 42:59Those are also bespoke supercar or whatever.
- 43:02Well, the Zora's, not Toyota claims, BMW provides them with the blocks
- 43:06and then they do all this other stuff to make it a Toyota engine.
- 43:09And it's not a BMW motor.
- 43:10I mean, I got into argument with people about that.
- 43:12You, you mean they take out all the cheap German stuff, accounting, engineering,
- 43:16crap, and put in like actual good stuff.
- 43:18So it lasts longer.
- 43:19But this is Mercedes powered by BMW Turbocharge, two liter, four cylinder.
- 43:25I mean, with the globalization of everything in the global economy and
- 43:29every, everybody's sharing parts.
- 43:31This is something that it's just gonna be happening in our lives
- 43:35and they're all gonna share.
- 43:36'cause it's, it's more cost effective.
- 43:38Yeah, but here's the thing though, if Mercedes.
- 43:40The people that invented the car, again, you want to tell me like
- 43:44we argue about Formula One, that they don't know how to build a car.
- 43:48They don't know how to build a four cylinder of their own
- 43:50that they can make reliable.
- 43:51So here's the deal.
- 43:52You put a BMW power plant in your Mercedes, and that's the
- 43:55Achilles heel of those Mercedes.
- 43:57And everybody, the public goes ah, and they get out their pitchforks and their
- 44:01torches and the cars are unreliable.
- 44:03Let's just say it could happen.
- 44:04Weirder things have happened.
- 44:06And now the reputation of Mercedes is besmirched by the fact that they
- 44:10sublet out the motors for these cars rather than building it themselves.
- 44:14To me it's a stupid strategy.
- 44:16It doesn't make sense to me.
- 44:17It's a cost saving strategy.
- 44:18Exactly.
- 44:19'cause they're putting all their eggs in the EV basket, so they don't wanna put
- 44:22r and D into ice and so it's cheaper for them to just go partner and buy a motor.
- 44:28Yeah.
- 44:28And it's going in their cheaper cars.
- 44:31Not saying it's right, but it's going in the cars that the A class, the
- 44:35Mercedes purists aren't gonna buy anyway.
- 44:38Why not just buy A BMW powered by A BMW four cylinder then?
- 44:41No, because what?
- 44:42BM BMW has a four cylinder So you mean go buy a mini?
- 44:45No, the little three series, 3, 4, 3 series comes with, you can
- 44:47get with a four cylinder turbo, you can get with the same motor.
- 44:50Wow.
- 44:50So to Eric's point, yeah.
- 44:51Why not just go to buy the BM bmw?
- 44:53Just buy BMW.
- 44:54To me that's silly.
- 44:55So Eric.
- 44:56We, this panel are car enthusiasts.
- 44:59Yes.
- 45:00We eat sleep and breathe car knowledge and stuff.
- 45:04We are a very, very, very, very, very small minority percentage
- 45:09of people that buy cars.
- 45:11When was the last time you bought a new car?
- 45:12The people that would, the people that would go to the Mercedes dealer.
- 45:16They don't care.
- 45:18Yeah, they wouldn't know BMW motors in it.
- 45:19It's gonna have a Mercedes badge on it.
- 45:21It's gonna have Mercedes plastic on top.
- 45:23It's not gonna say BMW anywhere unless you start taking parts off of it.
- 45:26Nobody's gonna care.
- 45:2790% of the people.
- 45:29Aren't gonna care.
- 45:30That's like the Porsche.
- 45:31People with their V eights that don't know that they're Audi V eights or
- 45:34the V sixes, were Volkswagen engines here, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 45:37I get it.
- 45:37Right?
- 45:38So it's the same thing, but that's at least within the family.
- 45:41So it makes sense that Audi will build the V eights for Porsche and Porsche's
- 45:45designing something else for somebody else, and they just swap it around.
- 45:48But BMW and Mercedes are competitors.
- 45:50That's sort of what I was getting at.
- 45:51This at least makes more sense than BMW giving motors to Toyota.
- 45:54Yeah.
- 45:55That, that, you know, how about Toyota in, in Subaru selling basically the exact same
- 46:00car makes and competing with each other.
- 46:02Makes sense.
- 46:02Makes no sense.
- 46:02Sense.
- 46:02Or how about even better?
- 46:04GM competing with gm with the Pontiac Firebird and the Chevy Camaro, or the
- 46:10GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado.
- 46:13They're the exact same vehicles.
- 46:15They are competing with each other.
- 46:17It is the stupidest thing in the world, but people don't even realize it.
- 46:20My GM C's better than your Chevy.
- 46:22Yeah.
- 46:23Yeah.
- 46:24It's got the same motor in the same chassis and his exact same
- 46:26truck with a different badge on the front, but mine's better.
- 46:29Mm-hmm.
- 46:30And on Tuesday, Jim Bob put the bow tie on the front, and on Thursday he
- 46:33put on GMC on the same assembly line.
- 46:36Right.
- 46:36But to the main point, normal car buyers, especially in this
- 46:41market, they're not gonna care.
- 46:42They don't care.
- 46:43But you know what they are gonna care about?
- 46:44Safety recalls.
- 46:46Oh, and Brad, this is one of your favorites because we haven't
- 46:49had one of these in a while.
- 46:51Would you like to inform our audience, our listeners, do people
- 46:56get locked in the trunk again?
- 46:57No.
- 46:57The brakes, I think they fixed those too.
- 46:59With the hood coming off, is it made with Home Depot?
- 47:02Wasn't that an early recall?
- 47:03I think the cars would like brick themselves or something.
- 47:05At some point.
- 47:06They had a problem.
- 47:06The hood wouldn't latch.
- 47:07Yes.
- 47:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:09They they did have the, yeah.
- 47:10Fuel spillage, fire risk.
- 47:13Awesome.
- 47:15That is awesome.
- 47:17It sounds like the drain, like the overfill.
- 47:21If you accidentally overfilled and then the little cup area uhhuh of the
- 47:25gas cap, well, their cup overfloweth.
- 47:28Well, it overfloweth and drain it onto exhausted Very hot earth.
- 47:33Yeah.
- 47:33Yeah.
- 47:33So what we're on about is yet another, I mean, this is for a very small portion of
- 47:38the driver enthusiast community as well.
- 47:40For all you see eight Corvette owners, there is yet another
- 47:43recall on the list for you.
- 47:45So there you go.
- 47:46I'm sorry.
- 47:46It leaks onto the radiator, not the exhaust.
- 47:49Well, that's, that's just air to, or that's, that's just a
- 47:53water to water inter cooler.
- 47:54It's hot though.
- 47:55It'll ignite the fumes.
- 47:56Boom.
- 47:57Done.
- 47:57Literally like Zoolander.
- 48:00Okay.
- 48:03It's like they saw Tesla with all the, like the car fires and
- 48:06stuff like Hold, hold my beer.
- 48:08This is a rare occurrence in malfunctioning filling station pumps
- 48:12appear to be a contributing factor.
- 48:14What is malfunctioning on the fuel pump?
- 48:18The automatic shutoff.
- 48:19I said Zoolander is not automatically shutting off, even though every fuel pump
- 48:23I've ever been to has a warning sign that says, do not leave the pump unattended.
- 48:27I bet you these idiots are going to Wawa and they're running inside to get their
- 48:30burritos while I'm waiting for them to get back in their car so I could fill up.
- 48:35Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 48:36But I feel like I've had pumps.
- 48:38You put the lock in and then it goes punk and then it releases.
- 48:41I feel like I've had pumps where that hasn't released and yet the
- 48:44fuel has still stopped flowing.
- 48:46I've also had pumps that did not stop flowing.
- 48:49Uhhuh.
- 48:49That's the malfunctioning one I guess.
- 48:51Yeah.
- 48:51Yeah, they've happened to me like twice.
- 48:53That one speedway in the middle of Illinois in, uh, 26, 27 years of driving.
- 48:58That's happened like twice.
- 49:00Well, we talked about infinity earlier, so we're gonna switch again
- 49:04and talk about JDM and Asian car news a little bit more Nissan here.
- 49:08I alluded to earlier, more manual transmission Nissans.
- 49:13That's right folks.
- 49:14The nimo edition of the 400 Z is gonna be a manual.
- 49:18Ooh.
- 49:19So this scares me.
- 49:21Why?
- 49:21Because of the conversation we had earlier about Nissan and their
- 49:25troubles and infinity and who buys 'em anymore and everything.
- 49:29The one Nissan that I would want to own mm-hmm.
- 49:32Scared to buy it because is Nissan even gonna be around Who's gonna
- 49:35service it when they collapse?
- 49:37You know, that's a very, very valid point.
- 49:39And that's what has kept me from going out and getting one as well,
- 49:43because I really do like these.
- 49:45I mean, I really truly do like these, I've said it before, they check a ton of boxes.
- 49:50They're very well appointed.
- 49:52They're very well priced.
- 49:53Yes.
- 49:53It's not as fast as a Supra, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 49:56But the point is, for every day this is fantastic and it looks
- 50:00fantastic and it goes like stink.
- 50:02Your point, what happens in two years if Nissan's not here?
- 50:05What happened to all those people with their pontiacs?
- 50:07I guess they can go to gm, like all the Pontiac G eights and
- 50:10the GTOs and all that stuff.
- 50:12Well, they can go to Advanced Auto, so you know, all good.
- 50:14Well, true.
- 50:15But that's not the only Nissan, right?
- 50:17Tanya?
- 50:17No, because they're also bringing the 300 ZX inspired heritage edition
- 50:22in midnight purple, which I guess was a color that GTR came in.
- 50:26The new Nissan Z, you can get it in this fancy purple color.
- 50:31One of my favorite three 50 Z colors as well.
- 50:34They had like an ultraviolet like this too, and it's gorgeous.
- 50:37Really, really awesome color.
- 50:38Hmm.
- 50:39Very tough.
- 50:40It almost looks like the mystic chrome.
- 50:42Does it have like a hint of green?
- 50:44It does in this photograph, although that could be, could just be lighting.
- 50:47That could be AI generated.
- 50:48Everything's AI generated these days.
- 50:50Yeah, it's hard to tell the, the one on the three 50 Z was just purple.
- 50:54Like those just came in that ultraviolet, like the E 36 BMWs did.
- 50:57Yeah, but I like this because I've always thought that was a really,
- 51:00really good color for these cars.
- 51:02They wore it really well, and I like the gold wheels too.
- 51:06It'll be really hard to choose between this and a RS three
- 51:10powered golf R. No, it wouldn't.
- 51:12I'd buy this all day long for the money.
- 51:14The golf's gonna be more expensive than the Z. True.
- 51:16The golf's gonna be like $75,000.
- 51:18We researched this recently.
- 51:19The regular front wheel drive, GTI, with the auto bond package is almost $42,000.
- 51:26MSRP.
- 51:27So what's the new golf R?
- 51:28With the RS three motor gonna cost 75 80,000 because that's what
- 51:31the RSS three and the TTRS cost.
- 51:34So they're not gonna give it away for free.
- 51:36If that's true.
- 51:37Who is gonna buy a $70,000 Volkswagen?
- 51:40The same people that bought Phons, which was nobody at, at that point I
- 51:44would just go and get an RS three for cheaper 'cause it's been out longer.
- 51:47All right, so moving on with JDM News.
- 51:49Tanya, you got some hot to report here?
- 51:52What's this thing called?
- 51:53The yin yang?
- 51:55I can't even say the name.
- 51:59The Wang Chung.
- 52:00What is this?
- 52:01Hey, now.
- 52:02It's my Yang Wang.
- 52:06So yes, I would think that's roughly the correct pronunciation.
- 52:10So the BDS Yang Wang U nine Extreme and it's an electric car, is now
- 52:17the fastest car in the world.
- 52:19Recorded at 308 miles per hour.
- 52:22I read the, uh, comments on this and people were just blowing it up.
- 52:26'cause they're like, well, and then they were like, well, there's land speed cars
- 52:30from the 1920s that are faster than this.
- 52:32And it's like, okay, apples and chainsaws, folks.
- 52:35Like this is stupid.
- 52:36It did.
- 52:36The speed that it did, it was recorded.
- 52:38It was, it was made official.
- 52:39Leave it where it is.
- 52:40Okay, great.
- 52:41So we have an electric card that ran its battery down and
- 52:44reached 308 miles an hour.
- 52:45I mean, okay, how many times can you do that in a row?
- 52:48At least with the Veron, you could refill it and do it again moments later.
- 52:53It's an interesting looking McLaren.
- 52:55It does look a lot like a McLaren.
- 52:57So here's the thing I remember about when the Veron set the production car record.
- 53:03The big thing wasn't necessarily the power.
- 53:06The, the power plant in the Veron was massive.
- 53:08A thousand horsepower quad turbos W 16 and all this crazy
- 53:13stuff that they came up with.
- 53:14And it was a slippery car, so it cheated the wind and, and
- 53:17everything that had going for it.
- 53:19But the tire manufacturer was the big deciding factor as to whether
- 53:23or not it could reach that speed.
- 53:25What didn't impress me was that they made an electric car with enough
- 53:29juice and enough motors and enough potency to get to 300 miles an hour
- 53:32is who made those low profile tires.
- 53:35They could do 300 miles an hour because that's more interesting than the car.
- 53:40Does it say who did?
- 53:41Who made 'em?
- 53:42No, that's, I haven't been able to find that.
- 53:44Hold on.
- 53:44Hold on.
- 53:45One person speculated that it.
- 53:47Oh, it was probably Michelin.
- 53:48Okay, great.
- 53:49That's not fact.
- 53:50GD tires.
- 53:51Oh, okay.
- 53:52Yeah.
- 53:53God damn tires.
- 53:56GITI.
- 53:58I got my gds and my Yang yang.
- 54:01My yang Wangs got some goddamn tires.
- 54:04BYD was able to set new EV land speed record equipped with the GD Sport.
- 54:09E GTR two pro tires Uhhuh, a tire pattern that was especially designed and developed
- 54:14in collaboration with a Yang Wang team.
- 54:16My Yang Wang's got a team.
- 54:18Can you imagine?
- 54:18Roll it up with a T-shirt that says Team Yang Wang.
- 54:26The jokes write themselves.
- 54:27I mean, there's nothing you could do.
- 54:30Yang Wang.
- 54:31Hold on.
- 54:31Who makes GD tires?
- 54:33So it's a street legal, semi slick designed for electric supercars.
- 54:39There you go.
- 54:40And it only comes on one the yang wing collusion.
- 54:43As we wrap up our Asian car news, we actually have some sad
- 54:47news this month, right Tanya?
- 54:48Yes.
- 54:49I saw this Su Matano, the father of the Miata passed away.
- 54:55It's 76 years old a couple days ago.
- 54:58So he not only is responsible for the Miata, he's also
- 55:02responsible for the FD Rx seven.
- 55:04I actually interviewed a couple of years ago Professor Norman Garrett,
- 55:08who was Mr. M's right hand man.
- 55:11In designing the Miata, he developed parts of the suspension and all the
- 55:14things that we love about the Miata and, and I urge people, if you've
- 55:17never dove into the creation story of the Miata, to go back into our
- 55:22catalog and listen to that episode.
- 55:23It was a couple of years ago, but he also talks about working on the
- 55:26third gen RX seven with Mr. M as well.
- 55:28So it's pretty cool.
- 55:30But you know, sad to see a legend in the design world, unfortunately taken from us.
- 55:34I dunno, the Miata lives on.
- 55:36I'm curious to see what comes next for Mazda in that department.
- 55:39They're doing good things elsewhere.
- 55:40Nowadays I'm seeing, I'm seeing them all over the road.
- 55:43It's crazy.
- 55:44What Mazda Miatas?
- 55:45No.
- 55:45Miata?
- 55:46No, I'm talking Mazdas in general.
- 55:47Mazdas in general, but I haven't seen any of the new Miatas on the road like hardly.
- 55:53Do they still make the ND Miata?
- 55:55I think so.
- 55:55Well this, because they're all Miata Cup cars and until, you know what I mean?
- 55:58They gotta make their way through the system.
- 56:00Maybe the Mid Atlantic's not a great.
- 56:02Weather place for them?
- 56:04No, no.
- 56:04I think you see probably more in the southwest than California and
- 56:07places Florida, places like that.
- 56:08You definitely see 'em at the track.
- 56:10That's for sure.
- 56:10I mean, Brad, when we were at VIR, there's a whole cup series of end Miatas.
- 56:14I mean they, there was what, probably 35 of them out there running the track.
- 56:17It was nuts.
- 56:18It's like, it sounded like a swarm of hornets.
- 56:20It was bonkers.
- 56:21Shout out to Sally Mott.
- 56:23Unfortunately, she had a bad run.
- 56:24Mazda's always made really interesting looking sharp cars to me.
- 56:29Something about them, for whatever reason, they're just, I, I used to love the 6 2 6.
- 56:33If we go back to our original topic, like you never see six two sixes anymore.
- 56:37The Mazda speed six.
- 56:39The Mazda millennia.
- 56:41Oh my God.
- 56:42Oh wow.
- 56:44What?
- 56:44That's like Windows me edition.
- 56:46Come on.
- 56:47Remember the Mazda Millennia?
- 56:49Yes.
- 56:49Those were nice cars too.
- 56:50Forgot about that.
- 56:51They're styling.
- 56:52It's just like if I was in the market for an SUV right now, I
- 56:55would totally go look at the CX 90.
- 56:57Yeah, those are really nice.
- 56:58And with that turbo inline six.
- 57:00They're really, really slick looking.
- 57:02Yeah, that's a BMW takeout right there.
- 57:05'cause you can get it for a lot less than an X five.
- 57:07And it's as nice inside and out as the BMWs are, or at least the BMWs used to be.
- 57:11Right.
- 57:11'cause the Germans are starting to make stuff a little cheaper.
- 57:14Yeah.
- 57:14The thing about the Germans making stuff cheaper is they're using cheaper parts.
- 57:17Mazda's been making things cheaper just because they like making things cheaper.
- 57:21Yeah, that's true.
- 57:22Well, we don't often have motorcycle news, but we do have motorcycle news and
- 57:27I think this one would shock you guys.
- 57:29We're probably not sad to see him leave Formula One, but all I'm gonna say is that
- 57:35it's gonna make Moto GP super interesting.
- 57:37Now, the Gunther Steiner is a team principle.
- 57:39Is he of what?
- 57:41Yes.
- 57:42And he owns a Moto GP team now or whatever.
- 57:45It's gonna make Ride to Survive season one.
- 57:48Really interesting.
- 57:53I didn't know Gene Haas bought a motorcycle team.
- 57:56God fucking gene ass.
- 57:58Can you imagine?
- 58:00I mean, maybe it's the right place for Gunther.
- 58:02I don't know.
- 58:03Good luck to him.
- 58:04Going into next year, he is gonna be at the head of Tech three Racing
- 58:07Moto GP team, full ownership.
- 58:10It'll be back marker team.
- 58:12So in order for him to get the job as team principal, he had to buy the team.
- 58:16I mean, if you aint first, your last.
- 58:18Right.
- 58:18Also in Motorcycle news, I thought it was cool to see the other series.
- 58:22You know, there's Moto GP and then there's Moto America and Moto America
- 58:25season finale is gonna be in our backyard and we'll be over by the
- 58:30time you listen to this episode.
- 58:31But here at the tail end of September, Moto America will be finishing out its
- 58:36season at New Jersey Motorsport Park.
- 58:39How cool is that?
- 58:40So I wanna keep that on our radar for next year because it has been on
- 58:45my bucket list to go to one of these like high end motorcycle races like
- 58:49Mo GP or MO America, and check it out.
- 58:51'cause I, on TV it's like, eh, like car racing on tv.
- 58:54I can do motorcycles for whatever reason I can't.
- 58:56But I'd really like to go see one in person.
- 58:58So Brad, that's gonna be one of our adventures for next year.
- 59:00And if Motor America is coming to NJ and P. Well, why the hell not?
- 59:03Right?
- 59:04Do they go to VIR?
- 59:05If they go to VIR?
- 59:06I am so there.
- 59:07I may be like, we gotta figure it out.
- 59:09I and I, I, I would love to watch the race with the baggers.
- 59:13Yeah.
- 59:14Yeah.
- 59:14Here.
- 59:15It's really entertaining.
- 59:16Those bikes look really cool.
- 59:17Switching gears to EVs and concept cars, what do you got for us, Eric?
- 59:20Well, you know, I wanna go back and unfortunately Brad, I don't know if
- 59:23you listened to the episode where William covered for you, and we
- 59:27talked about our adventures in Europe.
- 59:29One of the things that came up was William and I were talking about the rules and
- 59:34stuff in the EU were more electric cars.
- 59:35More electric cars, more electric cars.
- 59:37I wanted to circle back, I wanted to ask Tanya as much as
- 59:40they pushed for electric cars.
- 59:41I didn't see any charging stations anywhere, so I kept wondering like, where
- 59:46are people charging their EVs in Europe?
- 59:48And I stopped at a couple auto grills, and I can't say maybe
- 59:53there were a couple end spots.
- 59:55I don't know.
- 59:56I don't remember.
- 59:57And if they are, they're very well hidden, or maybe they're in people's
- 59:59personal garages or you know, they're charging at home or something like that.
- 1:00:02Because over there they already do two 20.
- 1:00:04So you could do a level two charger like right off the bat.
- 1:00:07But it was something that William and I had talked about after the
- 1:00:10episode and he goes, yeah man, I remember we were talking about it and.
- 1:00:13There were no chargers, even in France where we were, you didn't really see them.
- 1:00:17And I was like, it's really bizarre because there's such
- 1:00:19a big push for EVs in the eu.
- 1:00:21So if somebody's got more information on that, I would love to know like
- 1:00:25how they're doing their charging on, on such an old infrastructure.
- 1:00:29I mean, we talk about our infrastructure problems as well, which leads into
- 1:00:33something I found interesting that one of our members posted about
- 1:00:36how the US government is taking away the ability for EVs to run in
- 1:00:41the carpool lanes in California.
- 1:00:44Really kinda weird and especially weird for a state like.
- 1:00:47California Right.
- 1:00:49To be denying this one point that the author makes but really fails to
- 1:00:56elaborate on appropriately, I think, is that, well, to be fair, the Carpool
- 1:01:00lane is intended mostly for carpooling and Yes, by name, that's true.
- 1:01:05But the reason carpool lanes even originated was back in the seventies
- 1:01:10'cause of the oil crisis where they wanted you to carpool in order to reduce
- 1:01:15congestion and emissions and conserve fuel by having less cars on the road.
- 1:01:22Right?
- 1:01:22And so if it is about emissions and things like that.
- 1:01:26Well then an an ev no matter the number of people in it fits that criteria.
- 1:01:30Ooh.
- 1:01:30I know what they'll do in California.
- 1:01:32They'll create like their version of a bike lien for EVs.
- 1:01:35It's the EV lien.
- 1:01:36Ooh.
- 1:01:37It's the charger in it.
- 1:01:38So they charge themselves as they go.
- 1:01:39Yes.
- 1:01:39And then they bill you for it on a subscription.
- 1:01:42That's how it's gonna work in California.
- 1:01:43That's what's coming next.
- 1:01:44That's what my spidey sense is telling me.
- 1:01:47I don't know how I feel about this.
- 1:01:48It's, it's kind of weird.
- 1:01:49It is kind of weird because even the HOV lanes, you know, the carpool
- 1:01:53lanes that we have here on the East coast, I think people abuse them.
- 1:01:57Which on the one hand then like, fine put more EVs in there.
- 1:01:59'cause then that's less people in the main lanes clogging it up.
- 1:02:02Yeah.
- 1:02:03Oh, now we get to move on to Brad's favorite part of the
- 1:02:06drive-through Lost and found.
- 1:02:09Tanya, I found something for you and I'm wondering if it was a missed opportunity.
- 1:02:14I remember this one now.
- 1:02:15Yeah, remember this one?
- 1:02:16This is that sleeper beetle with the twin turbo VR six under the hood,
- 1:02:21making like a gajillion horsepower.
- 1:02:24And at the time we were watching the auction on bring a trailer and it
- 1:02:28was like, I dunno, like 20 grand.
- 1:02:29And I was like, yeah, that's not bad.
- 1:02:31This car's got a lot of mods in it.
- 1:02:33There's a lot of work done to this car.
- 1:02:35So were we right not to pull the trigger or did it sell for too much?
- 1:02:40What did it go for?
- 1:02:4156,000, almost 57.
- 1:02:44But it's a new beetle or sorry.
- 1:02:45Yeah, it's a new beetle version.
- 1:02:46But I mean, I meant it's a turbo s that they converted to this twin VR six.
- 1:02:52And so my hangup even at $20,000 is I know what it means to work
- 1:02:58on a four cylinder new beetle.
- 1:03:02That it barely fits.
- 1:03:03How did they fit?
- 1:03:04Like you ever have to do maintenance on this thing.
- 1:03:07It would be an absolute tragedy from the photo.
- 1:03:09I think you have to disconnect half this intake just to get the battery
- 1:03:12out now, and it's all-wheel drive.
- 1:03:14It's basically an RSI with twin turbos, which I hope they would've imported
- 1:03:18one then because if they converted a front wheel drive to drive, my
- 1:03:23God, that's a tube frame rear end.
- 1:03:25I mean, you just have to look at it at the pictures of it up on the lift.
- 1:03:27Oh, yeah.
- 1:03:28Yeah.
- 1:03:28That's sick though, dude.
- 1:03:29I mean that, Ugh.
- 1:03:31I mean for the amount of work they did on it.
- 1:03:3420,000 would've been an absolute steal.
- 1:03:37Yeah.
- 1:03:37For the labor and the time that went into it.
- 1:03:39One could argue maybe even at 50,000, that was still a good deal.
- 1:03:43All wheel drive conversion, vr, sixes, blah, blah blah.
- 1:03:47Everything else that's got going on with it, one of one beetle.
- 1:03:50But this was done professionally.
- 1:03:52This was an HPA beat a lot of Canada.
- 1:03:55This was back in the heyday when they were competing against
- 1:03:58EIP tuning, which became IAG.
- 1:04:00The big Subaru guys, they built their monster, R 32, which HPA had one.
- 1:04:05But then they built this, and it's like, the nice part is
- 1:04:07it was professionally built.
- 1:04:09It wasn't done in somebody's basement, out of parts overnight from Japan.
- 1:04:12You've got that going for it.
- 1:04:14But when you dig into a car like this that's so specialized, you
- 1:04:18begin to wonder, well, where did they source that part?
- 1:04:20Can I get that part?
- 1:04:21Was it something that they machined or did they fabricate it?
- 1:04:23So there's a lot of question marks.
- 1:04:24So I think it would've been really cool to your point, if it had sold
- 1:04:28for 25, I would've felt really bad.
- 1:04:30This is a 400 horsepower all wheel drive beetle.
- 1:04:33This would've been really cool to kick around in.
- 1:04:35I'd have been scared to drive it.
- 1:04:37'cause God forbid something breaks.
- 1:04:38Yeah, but it would've been super cool though.
- 1:04:40It'd have to be just like you drive around occasionally, the occasional
- 1:04:45time you drive around, it'd be awesome.
- 1:04:46It would be no doubt.
- 1:04:48I think the irony though here is that this is where great minds think alike, or it's.
- 1:04:53These are the only seats that fit that car.
- 1:04:55They have the exact same seats in this car that you have in yours.
- 1:04:58I know.
- 1:04:58I noticed exactly the same seat.
- 1:05:02I was like, wow, look at that.
- 1:05:03Somebody back in the day, and I thought it might have been HPA, but
- 1:05:08I can't remember who it was, made a mid engine S four powered Mark 4G TI.
- 1:05:15Oh yeah, you're right.
- 1:05:16That did exist.
- 1:05:17And then the factory did that crazy mark five W 12 thing
- 1:05:21that, yeah, proof of concept.
- 1:05:22I'm trying to remember who did that.
- 1:05:24Mid-engine golf.
- 1:05:25Was it Dahlback?
- 1:05:26Oh, it's the Dahlback car.
- 1:05:27Yeah, they did.
- 1:05:28They did that.
- 1:05:29They also did the inline five cylinder turbo golf.
- 1:05:32That was like ridiculous.
- 1:05:33They would shoot flames out the back and stuff.
- 1:05:35They had all sorts of crazy cars.
- 1:05:36I think they were in like Sweden or Germany or somewhere.
- 1:05:39I think I had that doll back.
- 1:05:41Golf as my screensaver for a while back in the day.
- 1:05:44Yeah.
- 1:05:44They called it the RSI or RST or something like that.
- 1:05:47It's been a while since I looked at those.
- 1:05:49But any rate, our friends, gray Chevrolet and Chuck LeDuc, you know
- 1:05:53they sell cars all the time, but did you know that Amazon sells cars now?
- 1:05:58I know Amazon sells houses.
- 1:06:00Yeah.
- 1:06:00'cause don't, don't they have that pickup truck?
- 1:06:02Bezos's pickup truck.
- 1:06:03This is Hertz is selling their fleet through Amazon.
- 1:06:08Oh, so you can, oh, you can one click buy now.
- 1:06:11That's what I'm saying.
- 1:06:12Your car shows up next day.
- 1:06:13Prime delivery on a Carvana tow truck.
- 1:06:16I've said it before.
- 1:06:17No one aspires to own a rental car.
- 1:06:19Let's just nip this in the bud.
- 1:06:21Would you buy an ex rental car from Hertz through Amazon?
- 1:06:26How desperate do you have to be?
- 1:06:28There are a lot of channels there.
- 1:06:30You gotta go through everything from A to Z. Alright, fine.
- 1:06:33I'm gonna do a Brad version of this question.
- 1:06:35All right.
- 1:06:36Here we go.
- 1:06:37Hertz through Amazon or used Nissan Ultima.
- 1:06:41Which do you buy?
- 1:06:42Used Hertz Nissan Ultima through Amazon.
- 1:06:48That's like the worst of the worst.
- 1:06:52Oh, and, and to quote the article to make you feel safe
- 1:06:55about buying these hertz cars.
- 1:06:57The vast majority of people renting something like a Nissan Altima, ah,
- 1:07:01my God, aren't launching it off a ramp or doing burnouts in a parking lot.
- 1:07:05I beg to challenge that statement.
- 1:07:08Yeah, right.
- 1:07:09Because Nissan Altimas, they live a rough life.
- 1:07:12They've seen some things, rental cars in general, live a rough
- 1:07:17life and have seen some things.
- 1:07:19The last time I had, I had a rental.
- 1:07:21When I totaled my Camaro, I had a trailblazer and I blew out the power
- 1:07:25steering doing donuts in the snow, and I just drove it back and said,
- 1:07:29Hey, the power steering stopped working, and they gave me a new one.
- 1:07:31Don't know what happened.
- 1:07:32Also, the tires are bald.
- 1:07:34Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:35I don't, I don't, I don't know what happened.
- 1:07:36It just stopped working on me.
- 1:07:37I, I just, I'm gonna go buy a car now, so leave me alone.
- 1:07:40Oh boy.
- 1:07:41We've only done this a couple times this year.
- 1:07:43And we only have a couple more full drive-throughs left.
- 1:07:46Are we actually gonna talk about Tesla?
- 1:07:48I mean, I thought we took the year off.
- 1:07:51We said we weren't.
- 1:07:52Well, why do we do this instead of talking about them?
- 1:07:54We'll just post the articles and not bother.
- 1:07:56They're there for you to look at if you really wanna know.
- 1:07:59But I do wanna touch on this one because it's not really Tesla
- 1:08:02specifically, but about Tesla.
- 1:08:03My wife found this and sent it over and it's from the Atlantic, not a source
- 1:08:07that we normally pull articles from.
- 1:08:09And it was just a one shot saying Tesla wants out of the car business.
- 1:08:14I'm wondering how true that is because the Atlantic's not your typical clickbait.
- 1:08:19We're gonna do this to get people's attention.
- 1:08:21You know, they're usually pretty serious news, and I'm just like, huh.
- 1:08:24This is something, I feel like you said from the beginning that they're not a car
- 1:08:28manufacturer, they're a software company.
- 1:08:30Thank you.
- 1:08:30This article has absolutely zero credibility to me.
- 1:08:34Okay.
- 1:08:34I also didn't read it, so I don't know what it says.
- 1:08:36The, the first sentence, Elon Musk still makes some of
- 1:08:40America's best electric cars.
- 1:08:43Bullshit.
- 1:08:45And then, and then here we go.
- 1:08:47Because cyber truck, further on in that first paragraph, when the Model
- 1:08:51Y became the world's bestselling car, it did for like a hot second.
- 1:08:55So that's not.
- 1:08:56A lie necessarily.
- 1:08:58We'll call it an equivocation, which is lying with the truth,
- 1:09:02but it's not necessarily a lie.
- 1:09:03It's bullshit.
- 1:09:05Okay.
- 1:09:05I don't give a fuck what the numbers say.
- 1:09:05Flag on the play.
- 1:09:06The F-150 is the world's is No, the, the Toyota Camry or the Toyota Corolla or
- 1:09:11whatever is the world's best selling car.
- 1:09:13Not in America.
- 1:09:14F-150 is the best one 50 in America.
- 1:09:16Yeah, sure.
- 1:09:16True.
- 1:09:17But just like America's best electric cars.
- 1:09:20Switching gears.
- 1:09:21To what has changed names more times on this show than I can think, which is now
- 1:09:26called seriously what could go wrong?
- 1:09:29Lowered Expectation,
- 1:09:35formerly Lowered Expectations.
- 1:09:37How many times do we change the name to these segments?
- 1:09:40It's whatever you come up with, Brad.
- 1:09:42Whatever suits your fancy that month.
- 1:09:43I wanna go back yet again to the French episode that we did that William was here.
- 1:09:48If you remember Tanya, we were talking about leaving manual transmission
- 1:09:52cars, not in gear when they're parked, just pull on the hand brake.
- 1:09:56And we couldn't figure out why.
- 1:09:57We've always, you know, I just put it in first gear, why
- 1:09:59bother with the hand brake?
- 1:10:00Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:10:01What kind of stresses is it putting on the transmission?
- 1:10:03And I saw a video from Europe.
- 1:10:06I finally figured out why they don't put the cars in gear.
- 1:10:10And unfortunately I don't have the link for it anymore.
- 1:10:12'cause I lost it.
- 1:10:13It was one of those Instagram reels or whatever.
- 1:10:15And I'll just explain it to you.
- 1:10:16The mystery is solved.
- 1:10:17Now, if you've ever watched anybody parallel park in Paris or Budapest
- 1:10:22or Rome, or pick a city in Europe and there's no space, if the car's
- 1:10:26not in gear, you can push it.
- 1:10:29Make space for you to fit because you can override the handbrake
- 1:10:33and then when you stop pushing the other car, it'll just sit there.
- 1:10:36'cause the handbrake will hold it.
- 1:10:37So that's why you don't put your car in gear, because if you have left your car
- 1:10:40in gear and somebody pushed you out of the way to make space because you parked like
- 1:10:44a butthead, they ruin your transmission.
- 1:10:46So it's courtesy amongst the citizens that you leave your car.
- 1:10:50In neutral or just don't park like a butthead.
- 1:10:52Well, I mean, yeah, but still I solved the mystery.
- 1:10:55That's the reason.
- 1:10:56Are these people all driving PEOs?
- 1:10:58Of course they are.
- 1:10:59I mean, come on.
- 1:11:00And do they all have those stupid little rubber mats on their bumpers?
- 1:11:03Like the people up in New York that leave them on the road when they're
- 1:11:06going down the Jersey turnpike?
- 1:11:07Oh my God.
- 1:11:07Every time I see somebody with that, I'm like, where the hell do you live?
- 1:11:12The one that comes outta the trunk?
- 1:11:14Yes.
- 1:11:14It's like flaps outta the trunk.
- 1:11:15But they just, they're, they're lazy, so they don't bother putting it up
- 1:11:18when they're like driving somewhere.
- 1:11:20They just leave it down.
- 1:11:21So there's this two inch thick rubber mat hanging out the back of their trunk.
- 1:11:25I kid you not, I literally watch the video of somebody like with a fiat
- 1:11:28move, two other cars so they could fit.
- 1:11:30And it wasn't like they were bashing them like you, I'm
- 1:11:33gonna crash into it and move it.
- 1:11:34No, they just gently nudged it and then they nudged the other one and then they
- 1:11:37made space and then they parked and they got outta the car and they walked away.
- 1:11:40It wasn't like, oh, stage it for the gram.
- 1:11:43It was like closed circuit tv, just watching the street.
- 1:11:46And I'm like, this is for real people.
- 1:11:48Wow.
- 1:11:48And at that moment, that's when I was like, boom.
- 1:11:50Light bulb went off.
- 1:11:51I got, I understand now.
- 1:11:52So it's proper etiquette to do that on the streets of Europe.
- 1:11:55But if I do it on an airplane, no, that's sexual harassment.
- 1:12:02What?
- 1:12:03That's okay.
- 1:12:04'cause Southwest has a sign seating now, so it's all good.
- 1:12:07It'll fix all the problems.
- 1:12:08Yeah.
- 1:12:09Oh my God.
- 1:12:09Never sit in the middle.
- 1:12:10I took a left turn, dude, I make sure I fly in a different row
- 1:12:14than you when we get on a plane.
- 1:12:16I can't even make it through security with you.
- 1:12:18Remember?
- 1:12:19That's a whole nother story.
- 1:12:20Well, yeah.
- 1:12:20'cause I'm, I'm Mr. America.
- 1:12:22Yeah, right.
- 1:12:23So during our little adventure to VIR, one of the evenings,
- 1:12:28we got an opportunity to watch.
- 1:12:30The Formula One movie.
- 1:12:32I didn't know that.
- 1:12:33Yeah, that's why we kept it, and we also kept it in lowered expectations.
- 1:12:36Brad, what's your 32nd synopsis of the Formula One movie?
- 1:12:40I thought it was like any race, car, movie or whatever that's
- 1:12:44come out in the last few years.
- 1:12:46It was just okay.
- 1:12:47It was entertaining.
- 1:12:48It's not factual regarding like stuff that the car nerds would pick up on.
- 1:12:52Yeah, I mean, obviously there's things that are wrong and then
- 1:12:54dramatizations and stuff like that.
- 1:12:56I thought it was entertaining.
- 1:12:57I thought it was good.
- 1:12:58Uh, it was no different than the Grando movie.
- 1:13:01I like the cameos in the movie, like, you know, Alonzo popping up and then
- 1:13:05the beginning Patrick Long's there when they're at Daytona and stuff like that.
- 1:13:08And yeah, it's, it's just a newer version of Driven in some ways.
- 1:13:13Yeah.
- 1:13:13I think you could have replaced Brad Pitt with just about anybody.
- 1:13:16You know, who it should have been.
- 1:13:18It should have been Dempsey.
- 1:13:19That would've been a lot cooler actually, either Dempsey or Fastbender.
- 1:13:23'cause they actually have legitimate like chops and they're both great actors.
- 1:13:27I mean, they're, I don't think Brad Pitt's a better actor than anyone.
- 1:13:30What happened is Brad Pitt paid for the movie.
- 1:13:32I think there was a weird undertone.
- 1:13:34Brad Pitt's teammate was sort of this poster, Lewis Hamilton
- 1:13:39trying to make a statement.
- 1:13:41Hamilton was also one of the producers or something like that.
- 1:13:44Yes.
- 1:13:44He was heavily involved in it.
- 1:13:45Yeah.
- 1:13:46And I feel like he wrote some of his own personality and maybe some of
- 1:13:50his own soapbox into that character.
- 1:13:53Yeah.
- 1:13:53I don't know.
- 1:13:54I didn't know how to come away from it, but it was like, it was really obvious.
- 1:13:56Right.
- 1:13:57Maybe not to other people.
- 1:13:58He came across as like a pre Madonna kind of.
- 1:14:01Yeah.
- 1:14:01Like I'm, I'm the best, you know, kind of thing.
- 1:14:03And then like they also tried to spin it like he did stupid things like Yeah.
- 1:14:08To make people feel that way.
- 1:14:09But they also tried to spin it like he was kind of misunderstood.
- 1:14:13His upbringing and like the relationship with his mom and stuff like that.
- 1:14:16I don't think his dad was in the picture in the film.
- 1:14:18Right.
- 1:14:18I can't remember if his dad was there or not, but they were trying
- 1:14:21to give a little bit of backstory, I guess, into his personality and
- 1:14:24how he might have been that way.
- 1:14:25But I feel like it was kind of shallow.
- 1:14:27I thought that Pavier Barham did a good job.
- 1:14:30I actually really liked him.
- 1:14:31I love him as a, he's, he's a great actor.
- 1:14:33He did a good job.
- 1:14:33I think he played the part of, I'm trying to remember the Italian guy's
- 1:14:37name that was always sort of behind the scenes, even in the old days
- 1:14:40with like Lancia and stuff like that.
- 1:14:42And his name escapes me at the moment.
- 1:14:43But I think he portrayed that type of behind the scenes, pulling the
- 1:14:48strings, playing the F1 politics and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:14:51He had some good one-liners.
- 1:14:53He was Lawrence Stroll.
- 1:14:54No, he was not Lawrence Stroll.
- 1:14:56No, not at all.
- 1:14:57I thought he did a really good job in that.
- 1:15:00I, although I think it was funny to see like Christian Horner in the,
- 1:15:03the background kind of dates the movie a little bit based on recent
- 1:15:07events, but uh, you know, I. I know you're heartbroken over that, Brad.
- 1:15:11I mean, Christian Horner's gone from Red Bull.
- 1:15:13Yeah, I, I don't care.
- 1:15:14Christian Horn Dog.
- 1:15:15What?
- 1:15:17Yeah.
- 1:15:17Well, we'll come back to Formula One in a minute.
- 1:15:19Well, well, Tanya, have you watched the F1 movie yet?
- 1:15:22No, have not.
- 1:15:23No spoilers, no.
- 1:15:24Now that's why we don't wanna tell you anything more, but
- 1:15:26when you do, you let us know.
- 1:15:28We'll do this again, then we will, we'll do it again.
- 1:15:30Yeah.
- 1:15:30It's sort of like the Sena thing that took six months for you to watch.
- 1:15:34You know what I'm saying?
- 1:15:34Well, where can I watch it?
- 1:15:36You can watch it through Prime.
- 1:15:37You don't have to have Apple, but you have to rent it.
- 1:15:40That's how we watched it, which means you have to pay for it for 12.
- 1:15:42Nine nine can watch it now for 49 cents on YouTube.
- 1:15:45Apparently for five hours.
- 1:15:50There's the advertise, there's the some guy with a handy cam in the, in the
- 1:15:53theater, back to the old bootleg days.
- 1:15:58Maybe they go to that movie theater that William goes to
- 1:16:00where it's like seven bucks and you gotta shuck your own popcorn.
- 1:16:03You know that kind of thing.
- 1:16:0420 bucks to rent it.
- 1:16:05Yeah.
- 1:16:05How much is it that just go buy 22?
- 1:16:08You can't, 'cause it's an Apple thing, you can't buy it.
- 1:16:10You can, you can buy it.
- 1:16:11That's what, um, Tom, I thought he rented it throughout.
- 1:16:14No, he bought it.
- 1:16:15Oh, whatever.
- 1:16:15It's still 20 bucks or 20.
- 1:16:17But he did get it through Prime.
- 1:16:18Oh, bullshit.
- 1:16:18You can buy it on Blu-ray.
- 1:16:19Target 33 49.
- 1:16:21Who's got a Blu-ray player that's even more expensive.
- 1:16:24No, wait a second.
- 1:16:25F1, the movie Blu-Ray plus digital copy.
- 1:16:2824.95 at Walmart plus digital copy, so you get it on Fandango.
- 1:16:32So just go Fandango and get it.
- 1:16:34Then the digital copy is standard definition.
- 1:16:36Well, it's $20 on Fandango too, but at least you get it and you're done.
- 1:16:40Right.
- 1:16:40Boom, whatever.
- 1:16:41I can get it for $24 at Walmart too.
- 1:16:43It's like when you buy TurboTax at Best Buy and they send you the product code,
- 1:16:48you're gonna get the product code.
- 1:16:51So terrible.
- 1:16:52So in lieu of rich people.
- 1:16:54Thanks.
- 1:16:54I just want to switch it up and go GTM Book Club and recommend two books that
- 1:16:59I read during this time off that we had skipping a month of the drive through.
- 1:17:03So I went back and I read a book called Faster by Neil Bascom.
- 1:17:07It's the story of Lucy O'Reilly Shell and Renee Drefus and the dhe.
- 1:17:11That's the car manufactured dhe, and it talks about challenging the silver
- 1:17:16arrows of Mercedes and Auto Union right up to the brink of World War ii.
- 1:17:20It's also the story that Lauren Goodman, who comes on the show to do
- 1:17:24our Women of the Autos Sphere series.
- 1:17:27She did a presentation on that as part of her work at Revs for the
- 1:17:31Ainger Symposium a couple years back.
- 1:17:33So I was able to kind of jump back into that story and learn a lot more about it.
- 1:17:36I'll say the book is very detailed if you're not.
- 1:17:39A historical fiction type.
- 1:17:41Maybe it's not your thing.
- 1:17:43If you like World War II and you wanna get a different outlook on, you know,
- 1:17:46the buildup to World War ii, it's a good book from that perspective.
- 1:17:49There is a lot of car technical jargon in it and you're, you're trying to kind of
- 1:17:52keep up with everything that's going on.
- 1:17:54But it's available on Amazon at Barnes and Noble, and it's also
- 1:17:58available as an audio book on Spotify.
- 1:18:00In addition to that, I didn't get the print version.
- 1:18:03I kind of cheated and did the audio book.
- 1:18:05I listened to the Man in the White Suit as an audio book available through Spotify.
- 1:18:10For those that don't know, that's the story of Ben
- 1:18:13Collins, the Stig from Top Gear.
- 1:18:16He was the second Stig from 2003 to 2011.
- 1:18:19It's actually read by Ben Collins and it gives some really interesting behind
- 1:18:25the scenes views in, not only into his racing career, his personal life, things
- 1:18:29like, I didn't know he was in the Army Reserves, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:18:32But it also talks about the golden era of top gear.
- 1:18:36And I thought it was really cool to hear his perspective on, you know,
- 1:18:39James May and working with Hammonds and what Jeremy Clarkson was like,
- 1:18:43you know, when the cameras are turned off and things like that.
- 1:18:45So that was a really good, listen, I don't wanna call it a read, you know,
- 1:18:49again, it's available as an audiobook free if you have Spotify premium.
- 1:18:52So check out the man in the white suit, and I'm still hoping to have
- 1:18:56Ben on an episode of Evening with a Legend, 'cause one of the chapters
- 1:19:00in the book is devoted to his three attempts at the 24 hours of Lama.
- 1:19:04So yeah, there's hope.
- 1:19:05Cross our fingers on that one.
- 1:19:07All right, Tanya's favorite section of the drive through,
- 1:19:10formerly known as Florida Man.
- 1:19:26Are you faster than an interceptor?
- 1:19:28Well, and this first one definitely is a, are you faster than interceptor
- 1:19:33in your gravelly zero turn lawnmower going down the, oh no Florida highway.
- 1:19:40Are you faster than an interceptor?
- 1:19:42And the answer to that is no.
- 1:19:44I think the answer always no.
- 1:19:47This is a nice zero turn.
- 1:19:50They can do 25, 30 mile an hour.
- 1:19:52Right?
- 1:19:52I mean, that's pretty decent.
- 1:19:54I used to go to the drag strip up there in Frederick all the time and they had
- 1:19:59the snowmobiles and the, the lawnmowers, the tractors right, going down the drag.
- 1:20:04So it's not out of the realm of possibility.
- 1:20:07I never saw a zero turn do it though.
- 1:20:09What was he drinking?
- 1:20:10That's my question.
- 1:20:11So this next one I had subtitled, it's time to make the donuts.
- 1:20:15So I'm impressed with this.
- 1:20:16'cause it's not every day, it's a woman.
- 1:20:19It's.
- 1:20:19Doing donuts in a Mustang Fresno, California.
- 1:20:22This 21-year-old, she's doing donuts, then she's trying to hit
- 1:20:25the officers on the motorcycle.
- 1:20:28She gets pit maneuvered.
- 1:20:29Then she gets tasered and then she gets arrested,
- 1:20:34and this didn't happen at 2:00 AM this happened in broad daylight, 9:00
- 1:20:38AM after the school drop off, she was like, I'm gonna do some donuts.
- 1:20:44Phenomenal.
- 1:20:44Holy crap.
- 1:20:45She was probably.
- 1:20:47On something.
- 1:20:48At least she had the decency not to do it at a cars and coffee.
- 1:20:51No, she just did it in a neighborhood.
- 1:20:53It looks like there weren't any pedestrians around
- 1:20:55that know at the moment.
- 1:20:56It looked like there was a sidewalk, you know, whatever.
- 1:20:58This could have been little kids.
- 1:20:59Oh boy.
- 1:21:00What's next?
- 1:21:01Oh yes.
- 1:21:01So also, are you faster than interceptor?
- 1:21:06We go to Indiana, we haven't been to Indiana.
- 1:21:08I don't know.
- 1:21:09We need to create that heat map of all the places we've had.
- 1:21:12Florida man stories.
- 1:21:13I'm telling you in another edition of Are You Faster Than Interceptor?
- 1:21:16Are you Faster than a Battery Powered Power Wheels Jeep?
- 1:21:22What?
- 1:21:22You're kidding me.
- 1:21:24So he was drunk, and so I guess he figured I won't get in my real car.
- 1:21:27I'll get in a Power Wheels Jeep and that won't count.
- 1:21:30Come on.
- 1:21:31But he got a DUI in a Power Wheels Jeep.
- 1:21:34This reminds me of that girl.
- 1:21:36She was in college and she lost her license for driving under the influence.
- 1:21:40So she drove around town in like a pink Barbie Jeep or something, going
- 1:21:45to the grocery store and all that shit.
- 1:21:46At least he didn't try to evade the cops, although it would've been
- 1:21:50really funny to see him bang a hard right and just go off into the grass
- 1:21:54and see if they would chase him.
- 1:21:55But I, I do appreciate the fact that he pulled over onto that shoulder
- 1:21:59apron, driveway, whatever it is, and he just immediately put his hands up.
- 1:22:03I know I've done wrong.
- 1:22:04Is this really a crime?
- 1:22:05It's a crime shame because you know how these Florida man stories
- 1:22:08usually end up, you get out, you get naked and you run into a swamp.
- 1:22:12So none of those things happen.
- 1:22:14So it's a completely, he would've already started that.
- 1:22:16He was naked.
- 1:22:18This is awesome.
- 1:22:19So this was a weird one.
- 1:22:21Apparently some sort of scam in Cleveland, and I'm not sure I fully
- 1:22:25understood it the first time, nor fully understand it this time.
- 1:22:28Some lady was driving down the road and then she heard what, apparently it sounded
- 1:22:33like a rock hitting the windshield.
- 1:22:35Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:35Kept on going.
- 1:22:36Hours later when she's home, these people roll up to her house.
- 1:22:40Demanding that she has her cell phone, she ignored them and all this stuff.
- 1:22:46And she goes to go look at her car and there was a cell phone
- 1:22:49attached to it, like magnetic.
- 1:22:52Oh.
- 1:22:52So they tracked her.
- 1:22:53But what I'm confused about is were they trying to do a home invasion?
- 1:22:57'cause then why leave the cell phone on the car?
- 1:22:59I don't know.
- 1:22:59That's, they don't say where she found it.
- 1:23:01So maybe she looked really hard and, and kind of found it in a
- 1:23:05hidden place and they were gonna keep tracking her or something.
- 1:23:08I'm guessing it must have been some sort of home invasion or attempt to
- 1:23:11do a carjacking that's kind of scar.
- 1:23:14Clever.
- 1:23:14Yeah.
- 1:23:15Or maybe once they realized the car was at a residence, maybe they
- 1:23:18were trying to steal the car, so then they figured we're not gonna
- 1:23:21steal it outta somebody's driveway.
- 1:23:23But if it was at the target parking lot, they would try to get it,
- 1:23:25you know, or something like that.
- 1:23:26That's a little James Bondi throwing your entire phone.
- 1:23:30That's a bit much too.
- 1:23:31I mean, you're with a magnet.
- 1:23:32Yeah.
- 1:23:33I don't, I guess, I guess that's the noise she heard was they like launch the phone
- 1:23:36and it actually stuck a higher probability of getting hit by lightning, I think.
- 1:23:42I don't know.
- 1:23:43Bizarre.
- 1:23:43But it's a, I guess helpful PSA reminder to people to, you know, always be careful
- 1:23:47when there's something suspicious.
- 1:23:48Like when you go out to your car late at night and there's, you don't
- 1:23:51realize, oh, there's this piece of paper on the rear glass, I gotta get
- 1:23:54back outta the car to get it out.
- 1:23:55Don't do that.
- 1:23:57Don't ever do that.
- 1:23:57Just drive off.
- 1:23:58Just drive away.
- 1:23:59Especially women.
- 1:23:59Just keep going.
- 1:24:00Let the piece of paper be stuck under your windshield wiper.
- 1:24:03Keep going.
- 1:24:03Yeah.
- 1:24:04Yeah.
- 1:24:04That's a setup right there.
- 1:24:05Well, since this is Cleveland, I'm gonna follow up with William and
- 1:24:08ask him if he knows about this scam.
- 1:24:10Now we're gonna go to Pennsylvania, Penn Tuckie.
- 1:24:13So how would you feel like, so talking about buying those Hertz used rental cars
- 1:24:17on Amazon that have been seen some things.
- 1:24:20How would you like to get a dealership offer a thousand dollars off plus
- 1:24:25$1,250 in rebate for some Kias that fell into a sinkhole in the dealership's
- 1:24:30parking lot, the groundbreaking deal, 2250 off of a car that was in a hole.
- 1:24:36Are you serious?
- 1:24:37It didn't fall below the earth, but the earth broke underneath
- 1:24:41them and they're like in the air.
- 1:24:44Cattywampus fees and destination charges apply.
- 1:24:47No, I I would hard pass.
- 1:24:49These are gonna end up at auction.
- 1:24:50Why wouldn't you buy one?
- 1:24:51What does the Carfax say on this?
- 1:24:53Oh, car fell in hole Repaired by dealership.
- 1:24:57Really?
- 1:24:57I don't know.
- 1:24:58Well, it says four vehicles into a chasm with minimal damage and no injuries.
- 1:25:03Minimal damage.
- 1:25:04Two of them don't have rear bumpers.
- 1:25:06Yeah, 'cause they came off into the sinkhole.
- 1:25:08Alright, I'm gonna close out this Florida man by looking back,
- 1:25:13reaching into the past, reaching four years ago of drive-throughs.
- 1:25:25Remember when we reported on a guy in the Czech Republic who would go out
- 1:25:30in his Formula two and go bomb the highways and he's modified this car.
- 1:25:35It now looks like a Marlboro Ferrari from like the 1990s.
- 1:25:38It's amazing.
- 1:25:39After four years, the mystery F1 driver has been called on the
- 1:25:43internet, has finally been caught.
- 1:25:45Took him four years to catch this guy.
- 1:25:47So begging the question, are you faster than an interceptor?
- 1:25:52Yes, until now.
- 1:25:55Damn.
- 1:25:55How did they catch him?
- 1:25:57They found him at home and they arrested him there.
- 1:25:59Oh, that's lame.
- 1:26:00You gotta catch him on the highway though.
- 1:26:03They think they saw him at a petrol station and then they got 'em at home.
- 1:26:06There was your mistake.
- 1:26:07Don't fill up at the petrol station.
- 1:26:09Have those gas cans at home.
- 1:26:10Yeah, that was just stupid.
- 1:26:12Yeah, you never do a fuel stop in a formula car, but he got
- 1:26:16away with it for four years.
- 1:26:19That's pretty damn good.
- 1:26:20Yeah.
- 1:26:21Good for you.
- 1:26:21I mean, now he's gonna spend 10 years in jail, so whatever.
- 1:26:24It's all good.
- 1:26:25Worth it for the gram.
- 1:26:27Any, yeah.
- 1:26:28Anybody on Instagram?
- 1:26:30Who's seen that?
- 1:26:30That all blacked out?
- 1:26:31Corvette?
- 1:26:32Well, I think the license plate said will run.
- 1:26:36Oh yeah.
- 1:26:36Kind of like Mbit or something like that.
- 1:26:38I just, yeah, it's all for the Gram.
- 1:26:40Sort of like cart Vader.
- 1:26:41Remember him back in the days he'd go down in his shifter cart through Paris and all
- 1:26:44that stuff on the highways and whatnot.
- 1:26:46He got caught too eventually.
- 1:26:49Some of these comments are funny though, in Italy.
- 1:26:51I bet he would've been rewarded.
- 1:26:54I saw a video of that recently where a guy in a Ferrari got pulled over and the
- 1:26:58cop came up and shook his hand and said.
- 1:27:00This is one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever as the best engine ever, man.
- 1:27:03And the kind of es just there.
- 1:27:04Like he just keeps shaking his hand and keeps talking to him.
- 1:27:07And he's like, are you gonna give me a ticket?
- 1:27:09He's like, he's starting to getting tired of all the uh, the compliments, right?
- 1:27:12And then finally he just lets him go.
- 1:27:14And I'm like, alright, I like this one too.
- 1:27:16God forbid a man have hobbies.
- 1:27:20Well, on that note, it's time we go behind the pit wall and quickly talk about news.
- 1:27:26This is just gonna lead us into other things, Brad, but I just
- 1:27:30wanted to start with this 'cause I know this is big news for you.
- 1:27:32I wanted the biggest things for you on your comeback for drive through number 60.
- 1:27:37And I thought this is just so important that I didn't even wanna
- 1:27:40wait to the Formula one segment.
- 1:27:42Here it is.
- 1:27:43Get ready.
- 1:27:43Get your Kleenex out.
- 1:27:45Daniel Ricardo confirms retirement for motor racing.
- 1:27:49This is why I put this first and foremost, retirement for motor racing, period.
- 1:27:54Full stop.
- 1:27:55There are no disciplines.
- 1:27:56Just no more.
- 1:27:58Are you sad?
- 1:27:59Be heartbroken.
- 1:28:00I don't care what you've always cared about, Ricardo.
- 1:28:03I mean, it's not like he died or anything.
- 1:28:05He's just not gonna be racing anymore.
- 1:28:06He's still got his brand on Chante.
- 1:28:08What's that translate to?
- 1:28:09I'll pass.
- 1:28:12Yeah, I signed up for the newsletter and I kept getting like product information
- 1:28:15and stuff and it's all not my style.
- 1:28:17What do you think that says about him?
- 1:28:19What do you think it says about Alonzo?
- 1:28:21It should be making the same statement, and according to you, Hamilton too,
- 1:28:26there's truth in that statement as well.
- 1:28:28I mean, Daniel's getting up there in age.
- 1:28:31I don't think age has anything to do with it though.
- 1:28:33I think he just lost his passion for it.
- 1:28:35So he lost his passion for all racing then?
- 1:28:38Yeah.
- 1:28:38Yes.
- 1:28:38I can relate.
- 1:28:40I feel like I've kinda lost my passion for track driving.
- 1:28:45The last couple times I went and did it.
- 1:28:46I didn't really have any fun.
- 1:28:48I broke the car, you know, I didn't really get to go out on track much.
- 1:28:51I mean, when I say that the pumpkin spice latte is probably not gonna see the
- 1:28:54track, it's probably a fair statement.
- 1:28:56No, it's gonna see it when you pull up and you park.
- 1:28:59It's gonna see it when I go to an IMSA race or professional race or something,
- 1:29:02but it probably won't touch a track.
- 1:29:04Maybe parade.
- 1:29:05Talking about IMSA and sports car and endurance racing, we did go to VIR.
- 1:29:09It was interesting because as we know, VIR is one of the circuits, though
- 1:29:12it's big, and though it has all the safety and runoff and everything like
- 1:29:16that, the big cars, the LMPs and the LM DHS and the gtps do not run at VIR.
- 1:29:21So you had all the support classes.
- 1:29:23What a handful of LMP twos at best.
- 1:29:26But everything else was GT production based.
- 1:29:28So it was a good weekend.
- 1:29:29I mean, it's always good to be around the racetrack, right?
- 1:29:30It's always good to bump into people and conversations and,
- 1:29:33and everything like that.
- 1:29:34But as an aside, while all that was happening, there was news
- 1:29:38that Lamborghini is pulling out.
- 1:29:41They're the first to quit this new generation of hypercar, the
- 1:29:46gtps that are out there now.
- 1:29:47So I'm just sort of sad to see that.
- 1:29:49So I'm wondering if that's also Volkswagen moving some money around, because we
- 1:29:54are officially going to Formula One next year with Audi Formula One's not cheap.
- 1:29:58And if something's gotta get cut, well we'll cut this new
- 1:30:00program with Lamborghini.
- 1:30:01They haven't proved anything.
- 1:30:02They're not gotten anywhere yet.
- 1:30:04You know, because when you introduce a new sports car, it takes four or five years.
- 1:30:07To get to a point where it's viable.
- 1:30:09So that's what I think is the reason behind Lamborghini pulling
- 1:30:12out more than anything else.
- 1:30:14But it's a shame because it's been exciting to see all these other
- 1:30:17cars come to the surface in the upper echelon of sports car racing.
- 1:30:21I agree.
- 1:30:22It's been exciting to see all these other cars in hypercar.
- 1:30:24I had no idea Lamborghini had one.
- 1:30:27Oh yeah.
- 1:30:27It came out like in 24.
- 1:30:29But to my point, like I'm not shocked that they're pulling out because I'm
- 1:30:32probably not the only one who just didn't realize that they even had one in there.
- 1:30:35It's not like all the fanfare and pomp and circumstance that came with
- 1:30:39Ferrari coming back and like the PEOs are cool 'cause they're like
- 1:30:42different looking and, and everything.
- 1:30:44It's just Lamborghini was just kind, they just kinda got lost on the sauce.
- 1:30:47On top of that, we were finally able to check something off our bucket list.
- 1:30:51After many, many years of trying on this show, you can go back
- 1:30:54and check this out via Patreon.
- 1:30:56We finally got a chance to sit down and talk with Bobby Rahal.
- 1:31:00We specifically talked about his early days and his row to Lamas.
- 1:31:04That was a lot of fun.
- 1:31:05That was a great interview, and Bobby has promised to come back and talk
- 1:31:08to us about indie car racing, so that's gonna be really, really cool.
- 1:31:11And if you're a fan of Evening with a Legend where we recount the
- 1:31:16stories and the legends of lamont and stuff like that, we've got a couple
- 1:31:18really cool episodes coming up.
- 1:31:20We've got a special one on Veteran's Day, so pay attention to that very
- 1:31:23unique episode that's coming out.
- 1:31:25And then we've got David Hobbs coming in October, followed by
- 1:31:29Bob Varsha in November, and then I can't say who's coming after that.
- 1:31:33Those are the publicly announced ones that we got.
- 1:31:35You can still sign up for those.
- 1:31:36Just go to Motor inc podcast.net and go to Evening with the legend and you can
- 1:31:39sign up and be part of the live audience and get your questions answered on air or
- 1:31:44whatever it is when we have the legends.
- 1:31:46There to talk about lama.
- 1:31:47So that's really cool.
- 1:31:47And speaking of lama, I'm going to petite in a couple of weeks, gonna be at Road
- 1:31:52Atlanta for the IMSA season finale.
- 1:31:55I'll also be working the a CO booth.
- 1:31:57There's gonna be a autograph session with some legends that have been on the
- 1:32:01show and some that are coming later.
- 1:32:02And so I'll be part of that and it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 1:32:05So if you're at Road Atlanta, stop by and see us at the A CO booth.
- 1:32:09That's gonna be up in the fan zone.
- 1:32:10So looking forward to the season closer.
- 1:32:12Before we move on, we need to discuss endurance racing a little bit more.
- 1:32:16Oh, okay.
- 1:32:17Because Franz Herman, AKA Max Tappin, he participated recently in a Berg
- 1:32:25Ring four hour endurance race in order to qualify for his GT three.
- 1:32:29License so that he can this weekend participate in a norlife endurance race.
- 1:32:35And let's just talk about how he did in that permit race.
- 1:32:39He was in a Cayman seven 18 GT four car is what he drove.
- 1:32:43However, they de-tuned him because of his quote, rookie standing.
- 1:32:48They de-tuned him 130 horsepower, holy cow.
- 1:32:52And added weight.
- 1:32:53He finished in his class seventh, he finished overall of I think 114 cars.
- 1:32:5927th.
- 1:33:00Wow.
- 1:33:01That's seemingly impressive.
- 1:33:03So if they, they hadn't basically neutered the car, he would've came in
- 1:33:08first and probably higher up the gym.
- 1:33:10I'm wondering.
- 1:33:10So it'll be very interesting to see how he does this weekend.
- 1:33:15In a non detuned car, which he'll be driving a Ferrari this weekend.
- 1:33:19All the cars that are available in I I racing, I get it.
- 1:33:22That's a, that's a premonition.
- 1:33:23Which funnily enough, his co-driver is someone who's
- 1:33:27coming up through sim racing.
- 1:33:29He's got like a his own league academy thing that he is doing.
- 1:33:33So his co-driver is gonna be some sim racer dude.
- 1:33:36So that'll be interesting to see how that goes.
- 1:33:38We'll put a pin in that for a minute 'cause we're gonna
- 1:33:40come back and talk about Max.
- 1:33:41We don't talk about virtual stuff that often, but I had to bring this up
- 1:33:45because Brad, if we go back far enough into our Utes, you know the old fours
- 1:33:50of leagues we used to run as part of GTM and stuff, it was pretty sad when
- 1:33:54I read and I confirmed through IGN that according to former turn, 10 employees,
- 1:34:00fours a motorsport has been canceled.
- 1:34:02That's it.
- 1:34:03The last one we got is the last one we're gonna get still.
- 1:34:05It is, I mean, I'm not surprised if you played the last one, fours
- 1:34:08a eight or whatever they call it.
- 1:34:10Fours a motor sport.
- 1:34:10The best one was seven, I thought six or no, six.
- 1:34:13Six was the best one.
- 1:34:15Yeah, fours a seven was good because just it, it added VIR
- 1:34:19fours A seven added VIR, right.
- 1:34:20Or was it six?
- 1:34:20There was a four pack, six added with the package.
- 1:34:22Yeah.
- 1:34:23And then it was, it was default and seven.
- 1:34:25Yeah, six was the best one.
- 1:34:26Six and seven weren't too different.
- 1:34:27It was like six service pack two.
- 1:34:29You know the typical Microsoft one?
- 1:34:31Yeah.
- 1:34:31Six.
- 1:34:316.1. I mean, that's a shame.
- 1:34:33They diverted a lot of their attention to the Forza Horizon series, which is, you
- 1:34:37know, if you like that, that's, it's good.
- 1:34:39Which the new rumor for horizon six is that it'll be take place in Japan.
- 1:34:43Ooh.
- 1:34:43That will be cool.
- 1:34:44I would look for, but then that.
- 1:34:46Is gonna compete against games like Solar Crown and it's gonna go up against
- 1:34:51JDM Drift Master and all that kind of stuff, which I have copies of all that.
- 1:34:55I will say unfortunately, JDM Drift Master I've been disappointed
- 1:34:58with because much like the new Aceto Evo, it's not fully baked.
- 1:35:04You know, you rush to get it and you get it at a discount, which
- 1:35:06is great 'cause you pre-order it.
- 1:35:07But then they're like, so we have this year long release schedule
- 1:35:10and we're still developing the game and we're gonna give it to you in
- 1:35:12like little bunches every month.
- 1:35:14And I'm like, Ugh, I don't have time for this.
- 1:35:16Unfortunately.
- 1:35:17As a result of that, I know a set of Evo is suffering quite a bit.
- 1:35:20Every time they update Evo, I go back in and I'm like, they fix one
- 1:35:23thing and they break 12 others.
- 1:35:25It's sometimes it's absolutely unplayable and I'm like guys.
- 1:35:28Why didn't you just do what everybody else wanted you to do?
- 1:35:30Start with a set of Corsa or a CC and just mod it.
- 1:35:34There's been so many mods over the years.
- 1:35:36Just build it that way and then, you know, continue to, but
- 1:35:38they're trying to do a ground up.
- 1:35:39Recreate the world, I guess with it.
- 1:35:41So my recommendation is if you're looking for a racing game, maybe a little bit open
- 1:35:45world, a little bit of mixture, a little bit of everything, checks all the boxes.
- 1:35:48You can hark back to the days of Project Gotham Racing by picking
- 1:35:52up a copy of Car X Street.
- 1:35:54I have been enjoying that thoroughly.
- 1:35:56Is that on Xbox?
- 1:35:57Yeah.
- 1:35:58Yeah.
- 1:35:58Cross Compat with PC Mac to include, you can cross play with PlayStation and Xbox.
- 1:36:05Oh, it does have a, it does have a PlayStation version.
- 1:36:07Yeah.
- 1:36:08So now everybody can play together, which is pretty cool.
- 1:36:10Originally it wasn't built that way.
- 1:36:12It's been a lot of fun to play.
- 1:36:13The physics is good.
- 1:36:14There's a lot of really cool cars to pick from.
- 1:36:16And the graphics are good.
- 1:36:17Is it, is it a track driving or, I mean, it's got street in the name, so I'm
- 1:36:20assuming like midnight club kind of thing?
- 1:36:22Yeah.
- 1:36:23Okay.
- 1:36:23Like Project Gotham was too.
- 1:36:25Right.
- 1:36:25So it, it's got a blend of a bunch of different things and
- 1:36:27there's different versions.
- 1:36:28There's like CarX Drift and whatever else they have that they offer.
- 1:36:31And behind the scenes Microsoft is actually involved in that process.
- 1:36:35And that's why I keep saying if you want that project Gotham like experience, this
- 1:36:39is sort of the reimagined version of that.
- 1:36:42Yeah, I, I loved Project Gotham.
- 1:36:44That was one of my favorite racing games ever.
- 1:36:46Maybe pick up a copy of CarX Street.
- 1:36:48I think I will.
- 1:36:49So as we round out.
- 1:36:50To the regular racing news.
- 1:36:52I want a quick shout out from one of our listeners that sent us a, a note
- 1:36:56that they wanted us to read on air.
- 1:36:58And so Ash writes, she said that Alex Taylor, a Booneville Arkansas
- 1:37:03girl, recently broke a speed record hitting 235 miles an hour.
- 1:37:08Alex's already synonymous with speed and a passion in the drag racing world, and
- 1:37:12she has etched her name in the record books At the prestigious Bonneville
- 1:37:15Speed Week, the Arkansas Native shattered the existing C slash CCB GALT
- 1:37:21record, clocking in at an astounding average speed of 2 35 0.638 miles an
- 1:37:27hour, officially entering the coveted.
- 1:37:29200 mile an hour club.
- 1:37:30So very cool.
- 1:37:31Congrats.
- 1:37:32Ash is also from Arkansas, so she wanted to share that bit of news that was in
- 1:37:36the LOPA paper with us to read on air.
- 1:37:38So I thought that was really, really neat.
- 1:37:39Congratulations to her.
- 1:37:40But she would've went faster if she was driving a yang wing.
- 1:37:44Oh, you know, just wait till GD makes some salt flat tires.
- 1:37:48Those G GDI tires.
- 1:37:50GITI gt.
- 1:37:52I know GTI like, it's like Zt, but gt no G lee.
- 1:37:55They're all made by g lee.
- 1:37:56It's all G. Maybe the, maybe it actually is Zdi.
- 1:37:59Alright, formula one.
- 1:38:11We reserve the right to talk about formula One last, I don't wanna talk about
- 1:38:15every race that's happened over the last two months 'cause it's just too much.
- 1:38:18I don't even remember.
- 1:38:19Right.
- 1:38:19So I just wanna say Belgium was a nightmare.
- 1:38:22The race was delayed for over an hour.
- 1:38:25It was just WW.
- 1:38:26The whole thing was WW and that was just an annoying race to sit through.
- 1:38:30Budapest, what an amazing race between two people.
- 1:38:33The McLaren's watching their team strategy is mind-boggling.
- 1:38:38I don't understand what's going on over there.
- 1:38:40Can we just let Oscar score points so that Max doesn't, what is
- 1:38:43this BS between Lando and Oscar?
- 1:38:46Like it just needs to stop.
- 1:38:47They're already gonna win the manufacturer's championship for
- 1:38:49crying out loud, like Red Bull doesn't stand a chance there.
- 1:38:52At least bunch of other blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:38:55Races in between.
- 1:38:56So let's fast forward to Azure Bajan Max Power, right?
- 1:39:00We are going full bore, and I'm reading stuff about how people are saying that
- 1:39:04Max is now stacking the end part of the season to try to win the remaining
- 1:39:10races and take the championship away from the McLaren drivers.
- 1:39:14Full stop.
- 1:39:14It's been done before, and apparently if he wins every race from here on.
- 1:39:20The math works out.
- 1:39:21Do we think it's gonna happen?
- 1:39:22What's the over under on this?
- 1:39:25They've sorted that car out, then yes, it's probably possible.
- 1:39:30I don't have any love for any of the F1 teams really.
- 1:39:33Go Cadillac.
- 1:39:34We're gonna get to that go Audi.
- 1:39:36We'll get to that too.
- 1:39:37You know, I'm not a ti fso.
- 1:39:39My heart breaks for Ferrari and kind of secretly I want McLaren to
- 1:39:44win, but then I don't want McLaren to win 'cause I don't like the BS
- 1:39:48that they do amongst their own team.
- 1:39:50I'm kind of like rooting for Mercedes to kind of like come through as the
- 1:39:53underdog and just take all of it home.
- 1:39:55But that's not gonna happen either.
- 1:39:56So I can't put.
- 1:39:57My focus on any one team.
- 1:39:59'cause they kind of all suck.
- 1:40:01You know what I mean?
- 1:40:01Stake.
- 1:40:02Yeah, stake.
- 1:40:03Yeah.
- 1:40:03Yeah.
- 1:40:03Holgenburg is gonna take it all home.
- 1:40:05Uh, any rate Max for stopping Champion this year?
- 1:40:08Do you think it's gonna happen?
- 1:40:09He won every single race but won last year.
- 1:40:12He had a 14 second lead, I think 14, 15 seconds He ended at Azure Bajan.
- 1:40:18Yeah.
- 1:40:18And he started slowing down because that gap was bigger and I think
- 1:40:21he just wasn't pushing anymore.
- 1:40:23'cause there's no reason George Russell wasn't catching up
- 1:40:28the pit stop.
- 1:40:29Let's be real.
- 1:40:30Yeah, let's be real for a second.
- 1:40:31And he just, they told him, you know what, save the motor, save the car.
- 1:40:35Cruise the last couple laps.
- 1:40:37I mean, you could tell from the videos when they showed you, he
- 1:40:39is like short shifting and just cruising around and you're like, wow.
- 1:40:42And you still can't catch him.
- 1:40:43So if they've sorted out that car and it's back to levels that it was at
- 1:40:48last year, it's over for McLarney.
- 1:40:50It's over.
- 1:40:51Yeah, it's over.
- 1:40:52So this is what's gonna make the rest of this formula one season exciting
- 1:40:55because so far it's been a bit of a dud, but now it's getting interesting
- 1:40:58to see how this is gonna play out.
- 1:41:00And maybe it, it just comes down.
- 1:41:01I will argue there's what seven races left.
- 1:41:04I think we said Tanya, it's, it's too many 24 races in the year.
- 1:41:07It's insane.
- 1:41:08It's like every two weeks basically, right?
- 1:41:10I mean it's just, it's bonkers, but we'll see.
- 1:41:12I think it's gonna, it's gonna be interesting.
- 1:41:14But on a side note, speaking of listeners checking in with us, I got
- 1:41:18a call from Alabama, Jeff, one of our listeners, and he says to me, he goes,
- 1:41:23obviously you guys know more about this stuff than I do in his southern draw.
- 1:41:27He goes, I just got into F1 recently like everyone else.
- 1:41:31But he goes, wouldn't you say stopping is just one of the best drivers, hands down?
- 1:41:36And so I wanted to open that up to go back to what we were talking about with
- 1:41:40endurance, with this whole math game, him coming out and potentially winning
- 1:41:44the championship if everything goes in his favor, do we think for is in a class?
- 1:41:49Like a Schumacher or a Sena or somebody like that.
- 1:41:52Is he that level of driver?
- 1:41:54I think it's hard to answer that question.
- 1:41:57Is he a great driver?
- 1:41:58Is he an amazing driver?
- 1:41:59Yes.
- 1:42:00The reality is, I think some of it's the car, but you gotta be
- 1:42:02able to pilot that car and it, you gotta be able to pilot the car.
- 1:42:05Yes.
- 1:42:05But because they're not all driving, it's hard to make these
- 1:42:08comparisons 'cause they're not all driving the exact same car.
- 1:42:11Well, in Red Bull's case, the rumor on the street is Eno's car is basically
- 1:42:17specked identical to ver stop's car as almost like a backup to Ver stop's car.
- 1:42:21And it's reportedly undrivable.
- 1:42:23People used to say the same thing about Sena, where Senna's car was like, I don't
- 1:42:26know how the hell he drives this thing.
- 1:42:28You know what I mean?
- 1:42:28Is he at that level or is it just he's got a particular driving style?
- 1:42:32What is it?
- 1:42:33I mean, it could be, I am changing my opinion of him and I think it'll be
- 1:42:38very telling what he does in GT three.
- 1:42:42Because if he's dominating there, then he is definitely one of the best probably.
- 1:42:48I think he's matured a lot from the arrogant asshole he was when he
- 1:42:52first started out in Formula One.
- 1:42:54And he's a father now, right?
- 1:42:55Technically now he's a father, yes.
- 1:42:56But he started maturing even before then.
- 1:42:58But maybe that's 'cause he kind of had a step kid in Kelly's
- 1:43:02first daughter, Kelly pk.
- 1:43:04So maybe he was already changing there.
- 1:43:06He's very consistent.
- 1:43:08He's a very consistent driver hitting the mark.
- 1:43:11Laugh after lap, after lap, after lap.
- 1:43:14So that I racing and maybe it is, I mean, someone else who tends to
- 1:43:17be that consistent also is Ptri.
- 1:43:20So I'd really like to see him if it comes down between him and
- 1:43:23Norris, I'd like to see him win the World Championship for sure.
- 1:43:27'cause I think he is probably the stronger driver.
- 1:43:30But I mean, Sapin, he's definitely something so.
- 1:43:34It'll be interesting to see if he wins this year.
- 1:43:36And to your point, if he does something in sports, car and endurance
- 1:43:39racing, you know, let's say he gets a couple other championships of
- 1:43:42different disciplines under his belt.
- 1:43:44I think when we jump forward 10 years and look back, we're gonna go over stop.
- 1:43:48And he might not have eight world titles in Formula One like Lewis was
- 1:43:51trying to get to, or like Schumacher had seven and you know, all that.
- 1:43:55But I think we're gonna regard him at a similar level as like a Jimmy Clark
- 1:43:58or a Sena or some of those, some of the greats where we didn't recognize
- 1:44:03it at the time, but now when we look back, we're gonna be like, holy heck,
- 1:44:06his contract I think goes till 2028.
- 1:44:08So if he wins this and he wins the next.
- 1:44:11Three seasons, he would have eight world championships.
- 1:44:14He would, but he also, to me, he needs to win Lama because a lot of
- 1:44:18those old time Formula One champions, not Sena, but a lot of, you know,
- 1:44:22the Andrettis, the whatevers, they went off and did other big races.
- 1:44:27He's gonna go do other things he wants to do.
- 1:44:28He's all this GT three stuff he's doing is 'cause he wants to do the
- 1:44:3124 hours of the nerve burger ring.
- 1:44:33Yeah.
- 1:44:33Once you do that, I'm sure Lamont's probably isn't that far behind.
- 1:44:37Why wouldn't he?
- 1:44:3824 hours of Lamont carries more weight, you know, on your resume
- 1:44:41than 24 hours of the ring does.
- 1:44:42No offense to the ring.
- 1:44:43'cause it's an awesome thing.
- 1:44:44Mm. But in the stratosphere, it's like the Indie 500 Monaco
- 1:44:47and Lama or the big three.
- 1:44:49Right.
- 1:44:49They're the triple crown.
- 1:44:50Which is funny because Lamont gets all the attention, but the Nors life is.
- 1:44:5510,000 times more difficult.
- 1:44:56It is, and it's also 10,000 more times difficult to televise.
- 1:45:00Well, and that's why it doesn't get the hype it gets, but it's more impressive.
- 1:45:03Like if he won first time going to the basically nerve berg ring Yeah.
- 1:45:07Kind of deal.
- 1:45:08And then he like, were to win the 24 hours.
- 1:45:11Oh my God.
- 1:45:11He wants to go there because the ring is available in iRacing and Lama is not.
- 1:45:16So that's, that's why, that's what it's all about.
- 1:45:18The other thing about him that I'm liking more is kind of like
- 1:45:21paying a little bit more attention and learning more about him.
- 1:45:24Like he really does seem to enjoy all the racing in all the different kinds.
- 1:45:29Like I watched that one video where he made the negative comment about front
- 1:45:32wheel drive cars, but like he was going out test driving the Mustang or all this
- 1:45:36stuff and he, he got on track in his Mustang for like the first time and,
- 1:45:40and it starts like raining and I mean he is got complete control of this.
- 1:45:44Monster, whatever, r blah, blah, blah.
- 1:45:47Huge beast Mustang thing that he was driving and it's like, he
- 1:45:51seems like he can maybe get into any car and learn it quickly.
- 1:45:55Yeah.
- 1:45:55Like Sena would do.
- 1:45:56Yeah.
- 1:45:56The same kind of thing.
- 1:45:57I don't know.
- 1:45:58I'm, I'm hopeful.
- 1:45:59I, I too am changing my opinion, although secretly like you, I'm sort of rooting
- 1:46:03for Oscar and then sadly I'm crying into my Cheerios because of Ferrari.
- 1:46:08I mean, what a pathetic.
- 1:46:09Ours are terrible.
- 1:46:11They're so bad.
- 1:46:13Everybody else is doing two 15 with the DRS Open and Ferrari's like 2 0 4.
- 1:46:182 0 4 maybe.
- 1:46:20Eh.
- 1:46:21And then it's like the DRS opens and then they go backwards, 180 balls an
- 1:46:25hour and it's, it's like, it's awful.
- 1:46:28What a mess.
- 1:46:29God.
- 1:46:29Ferrari, I think they can know how to build a formula car.
- 1:46:32So as we wrap up Formula One, it will be mentioned.
- 1:46:35Audi, we still don't know.
- 1:46:36Well, we do know, but I'm like, I'm really disappointed with the driver choices.
- 1:46:39Like with Audi, that's gonna be a wash next year.
- 1:46:42Did they say who?
- 1:46:44I don't remember.
- 1:46:44Who's the second driver?
- 1:46:45Holgenburg and I don't know.
- 1:46:47Weren't they gonna bring back Schumacher?
- 1:46:49I don't think they announced the second driver yet.
- 1:46:51All we know is it's Hulk converter.
- 1:46:52I thought they did and it was some other German or something
- 1:46:54like that, or whatever.
- 1:46:55Anyway, it doesn't matter.
- 1:46:56My point is we're gonna go full mullet with Cadillac.
- 1:46:59We're bringing back BOTAs.
- 1:47:01That's gonna be awesome.
- 1:47:03BOTAs with the bow tie.
- 1:47:04Come on.
- 1:47:05And then Perez, we're gonna bring back Perez to run with ca. What
- 1:47:08do we think about this team up?
- 1:47:10Some people would say like, oh, they should be putting the rookies
- 1:47:13in, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:47:15But like, honestly, you have a brand new team.
- 1:47:17The quickest way to get up to speed is two veteran drivers.
- 1:47:21And who, other than, I guess Alonzo didn't wanna move, so
- 1:47:27Strolls paying him too much.
- 1:47:29So he's, he's holding on for that newie, he's waiting
- 1:47:32Uhhuh for that car from Newie.
- 1:47:34Yeah.
- 1:47:34So he is sticking there.
- 1:47:36People poo poo him BOTAs.
- 1:47:38But like he did well in Mercedes and maybe you could argue maybe it was the car.
- 1:47:42I don't know.
- 1:47:43He has a decent record and I mean Perez was fine when he was in
- 1:47:47the Red Bull for the most part.
- 1:47:49So there are two veteran seasoned drivers that know what's going on
- 1:47:53and they can help bring the Cadillac team who are all gonna be rookies.
- 1:47:56They can help build that team out and then eventually they'll get replaced.
- 1:48:00But we'll see how it goes.
- 1:48:01To Tanya's point, like both of those drivers, even though they didn't
- 1:48:05win the championships, they came from championship winning teams.
- 1:48:09Yeah, yeah, right.
- 1:48:09BOTAs was no slouch when he was at Alpha Romeo either.
- 1:48:12I mean, salur, whatever was right.
- 1:48:13So just to make sure I got my facts straight, Cadillac powered by Ferrari.
- 1:48:19I think so.
- 1:48:20At least until they switch motors right Beginning.
- 1:48:22Yeah.
- 1:48:23Man.
- 1:48:23How weird is that gonna be?
- 1:48:24They might wanna rethink that.
- 1:48:26Can they bolt a carburetor on it so it's it's gonna be a tester.
- 1:48:33Well, so here's the thing.
- 1:48:34A lot of the problems with the Ferrari, I don't know if they're
- 1:48:37the motor, because a lot of things that you can read, they blame.
- 1:48:41Maybe this sounds silly.
- 1:48:42Also, it's not because if they really have a bunch of problems with the
- 1:48:46braking system, if you're wasting time, early braking and not going in
- 1:48:51with good entry and then exit speed, you're never gonna hit the same top.
- 1:48:55You just neutered yourself every time you come out of a corner.
- 1:48:57And then if you're fighting the car, which allegedly is happening with Hamilton,
- 1:49:01because these, I don't know, his style of braking is not compatible with whatever
- 1:49:05the hell is going on with the Ferrari.
- 1:49:06If this is all true.
- 1:49:09Okay.
- 1:49:10Allegedly then he's wasting so much time.
- 1:49:12He's constantly trying to counters steer the car because it's
- 1:49:15twitchy af through every corner.
- 1:49:17And it's like, well how can you be competitive then?
- 1:49:19You're inherently always slow.
- 1:49:21So maybe Cadillac stands a chance if Cadillac's doing Arrow Cadillac's doing
- 1:49:25suspension, brake, all this stuff, and then they just have the power plant.
- 1:49:28Maybe the power plant's decent and the rest of the car is trash.
- 1:49:31I feel as though Cadillac stands the same chance in its first year that host does.
- 1:49:36If they're on the podium, go.
- 1:49:38Yeah, right.
- 1:49:38Okay.
- 1:49:38That's gonna be impressive.
- 1:49:40Then it's really gonna be like Ferrari, what the, are you people doing?
- 1:49:43Right.
- 1:49:43'cause clearly the motor's fine.
- 1:49:46Well, we'll just have to wait and see.
- 1:49:48But I'm excited for the rest of the season.
- 1:49:50I'm also excited for it to be over.
- 1:50:03Our Motorsport News is brought to us in partnership with the International
- 1:50:06Motor Racing Research Center.
- 1:50:08So I will say I did recently attend the Argo Singer Awards
- 1:50:13Dinner honoring Brian Redmond.
- 1:50:14That was pretty cool.
- 1:50:15There's a lot of articles and photographs that you can check out on
- 1:50:17the I-M-R-R-C website about that event.
- 1:50:19It was wonderful to be able to participate in that.
- 1:50:21I got to meet Brian Redmond.
- 1:50:23I got to meet David Hobbs in person, Bob Varsa, a bunch of other celebrities and
- 1:50:26folks that I had interviewed on the show before that I had only met virtually.
- 1:50:30So it was a great networking opportunity and actually I'm kinda
- 1:50:32looking forward to going next year.
- 1:50:33So don't know who's gonna be getting that lifetime Achievement award next
- 1:50:37year, but I'm definitely putting it on my calendar for next time.
- 1:50:39I also wanna mention, as we've mentioned in the past, there is a
- 1:50:43sweepstakes that is continuing on.
- 1:50:45Until tonight.
- 1:50:47So if you're listening to this episode on the day that it airs
- 1:50:50September 30th, this is your last chance to win that beautiful 2026.
- 1:50:56It's the 2026 model because it was delivered Porsche nine 11 T with

- 1:51:08sniping there racing archives.org.
- 1:51:11Click on sweepstakes.
- 1:51:12Remember, hurry before time runs out.
- 1:51:15The sweepstakes closes tonight at midnight, September the 30th.
- 1:51:18And before we wrap this episode up, let's do a quick GTM Trackside
- 1:51:24report sponsored by the northeast region of the Audi Club of America.
- 1:51:27Are you ready to discover the exhilarating world of track driving?
- 1:51:31The season is starting to wind down on the east coast, but there's still time to step
- 1:51:35into your driver's seat and experience the thrill of pushing your car to its
- 1:51:38limits in a safe, controlled environment.
- 1:51:40Rounding out the roster this year is an HPTE Solo Day at Limerock Park
- 1:51:44on Friday, October 10th, along with FCP Euro's, October Fest event, also
- 1:51:49at Limerock on Sunday, October 26th.
- 1:51:51That's right, Tanya.
- 1:51:52And even though the Audi Club track season is coming to a close, there's still
- 1:51:56plenty of laps out there for you and joy.
- 1:51:58We just recently added some brand new fall events to our racing
- 1:52:03calendar@club.gt motorsports.org.
